We discuss the nuclear magnetic relaxation rate and the superfluid density with the use of the effective five-band model by Kuroki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 087004 (2008)] in Fe-based superconductors. We show that a fully-gapped anisotropic \pm s-wave superconductivity consistently explains experimental observations. In our phenomenological model, the gaps are assumed to be anisotropic on the electron-like βFermi surfaces around the M point, where the maximum of the anisotropic gap is about four times larger than the minimum.
Transverse-field muon-spin rotation measurements performed on two samples of LiFeAs demonstrate that the superfluid stiffness of the superconducting condensate in relation to its superconducting transition temperature is enhanced compared to other pnictide superconductors. Evidence is seen for a field-induced magnetic state in a sample with a significantly suppressed superconducting transition temperature. The results in this system highlight the role of direct Fe-Fe interactions in frustrating pairing mediated by antiferromagnetic fluctuations and suggest that, in common with other pnictide s…
We consider the superfluid density $ρ_s (T)$ in a two-band superconductor with extended s-wave symmetry ($s^+$) in the presence of non-magnetic impurities and apply the results to Fe-pnictides. We show that the behavior of the superfluid density is essentially the same as in an ordinary s-wave superconductor with magnetic impurities. We show that, for moderate to strong inter-band impurity scattering, $ρ_s (T)$ behaves as a power-law $T^n$ with $n\approx 1.6\div2$ over a wide range of $T$. We argue that the power-law behavior is consistent with recent experiments on the penetration depth $λ(T)…
In- and out-of-plane magnetic penetration depths were measured in three iron-based pnictide superconducting systems. All studied samples of both 122 systems show a robust power-law behavior, $λ(T) T^n$, with the sample-dependent exponent n=2-2.5, which is indicative of unconventional pairing. This scenario could be possible either through scattering in a $s_{\pm }$ state or due to nodes in the superconducting gap. In the Nd-1111 system, the interpretation of data may be obscured by the magnetism of rare-earth ions. The overall anisotropy of the pnictide superconductors is small. The 1111 syste…
We measure the penetration depth $λ_{ab}(T)$ in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ using local techniques that do not average over the sample. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)\equiv1/λ_{ab}(T)^2$ has three main features. First, $ρ_s(T=0)$ falls sharply on the underdoped side of the dome. Second, $λ_{ab}(T)$ is flat at low $T$ at optimal doping, indicating fully gapped superconductivity, but varies more strongly in underdoped and overdoped samples, consistent with either a power law or a small second gap. Third, $ρ_s(T)$ varies steeply near $T_c$ for optimal and underdoping. These observations are …
We investigate the role of gap characteristics such as anisotropy and inequality of the gaps in the quasiparticle interferences of iron pnictides using a five-orbital tight-binding model. We examine how the difference in the sensitivities exhibited by the sign-changing and -preserving $s$-wave superconductivity in an annular region around ($π, 0$), which can be used to determine the sign change of the superconducting gap, gets affected when the gaps are unequal on the electron and hole pocket. In addition, we also discuss how robust these differentiating features are on changing the quasiparti…
High resolution magnetization measurements performed in a high quality Ba_(1-x)K_xFe2As2 single crystal allowed to determine the diamagnetism induced above the superconducting transition by thermally activated Cooper pairs. These data, obtained with magnetic fields applied along and transverse to the crystal ab layers, demonstrate experimentally that the superconducting transition of iron pnictides may be explained at a phenomenological level in terms of the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau approach for three-dimensional anisotropic superconductors.
This article reviews the NMR and NQR studies on iron-based high-temperature superconductors by the IOP/Okayama group. It was found that the electron pairs in the superconducting state are in the spin-singlet state with multiple fully-opened energy gaps. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the normal state are found to be closely correlated with the superconductivity. Also the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic in the spin space, which is different from the case in copper oxide superconductors. This anisotropy originates from the spin-orbit coupling and is an important r…
The coexisting regime of spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity in the iron pnictides represents a novel ground state. We have performed high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on NaFe1-xCoxAs (x = 0.0175) in this regime and revealed its distinctive electronic structure, which provides some microscopic understandings of its behavior. The SDW signature and the superconducting gap are observed on the same bands, illustrating the intrinsic nature of the coexistence. However, because the SDW and superconductivity are manifested in different parts of the band structure, the…
We determine the anisotropy of the spin fluctuation induced pairing gap on the Fermi surface of the FeAs based superconductors as function of the exchange and Hund's coupling $J_{H}$. We find that for sufficiently large $J_{H}$, nearly commensurate magnetic fluctuations yield a fully gapped $s^{\pm}$-pairing state with small anisotropy of the gap amplitude on each Fermi surface sheet, but significant variations of the gap amplitude for different sheets of the Fermi surface. In particular, we obtain the large variation of the gap amplitude on different Fermi surface sheets, as seen in ARPES exp…
We show that the interference between scattering by impurities and by critical spin fluctuations gives rise to anisotropic transport in the Ising-nematic state of the iron pnictides. The effect is closely related to the non-Fermi liquid behavior of the resistivity near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. Our theory not only explains the observed sign of the resistivity anisotropy $Δρ$ in electron doped systems, but also predicts a sign change of $Δρ$ upon sufficient hole doping. Furthermore, our model naturally addresses the changes in $Δρ$ upon sample annealing and alkaline-earth sub…
We develop the formalism for computing the oscillations of the specific heat and thermal transport under rotated magnetic field in multiband superconductors with anisotropic gap and apply it to iron-pnictides. We show that these oscillations change sign at low temperatures and fields, which strongly influences the conclusions about the gap structure based on experiment. We find that recent measurements of the specific heat oscillations indicate that the iron-based superconductors possess an anisotropic gap with deep minima or nodes close to the line connecting electron and hole pockets. We mak…
We discuss the type of pairing in the hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs, taking into account its multiband structure. The topological chiral $d$-wave state with time-reversal-symmetry breaking has been anticipated from the spontaneous magnetization observed by the muon-spin-relaxation experiment. We point out in this paper that the recent experimental reports on the nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ and superfluid density $n_s(T)$, which seemingly support the conventional $s$-wave pairing, are also consistent with the chiral $d$-wave state. The compatibility of the gap and…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs (Tc = 18 K). We reveal multiple nodeless superconducting (SC) gaps with 2D/kBTc ratios varying from 2.8 to 6.4, depending on the Fermi surface (FS). We also succeeded in directly observing a gap anisotropy along the FS with magnitude up to ~30 %. The anisotropy is four-fold symmetric with an antiphase between the hole and electron FSs, suggesting complex anisotropic interactions for the SC pairing. The observed momentum dependence of the SC gap offers an excellent opportunity to invest…
The presence of macroscopic phase separation between the superconducting and magnetic phases in \cfcaf is demonstrated by muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements conducted across their phase boundaries (x=0.05-0.15). The magnetic phase tends to retain the high transition temperature (T_m > T_c), while Co-doping induces strong randomness. The volumetric fraction of superconducting phase is nearly proportional to the Co content $x$ with constant superfluid density. These observations suggest the formation of superconducting "islands" (or domains) associated with Co ions in the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers…
We calculated the critical temperature in the framework of s+-+d-wave multiband Eliashberg theory. We have solved these equations numerically to see at what values of the input parameters there is a solution with a non-zero critical temperature and what is the symmetry of the order parameter of this solution. For our model we consider the pnictide case with simplifications that allow us to obtain the most general possible information. For selected and representative cases in which the order parameter has s+-+d symmetry, we calculated the superconducting density of states, the temperature depen…
In several members of the ferro-pnictides, spin density wave (SDW) order coexists with superconductivity over a range of dopings. In this letter we study the anomalous magnetic Zeeman response of this coexistence state and show that it can be used to confirm the extended s-wave gap structure as well as structure of superconducting (SC) gap in coexisting phase. On increasing the field, a strongly anisotropic reduction of SC gap is found. The anisotropy is directly connected to the gap structure of superconducting phase. The signature of this effect in quasiparticle interference measured by STM,…
We report theoretical and experimental results on the transition metal pnictide WP. The theoretical outcomes based on tight-binding calculations and density functional theory indicate that WP is a three-dimensional superconductor with an anisotropic electronic structure and nonsymmorphic symmetries. On the other hand, magnetoresistance experimental data and the analysis of superconducting fluctuations of the conductivity in external magnetic field indicate a weakly anisotropic three-dimensional superconducting phase.
Elucidating the nature of spin excitations is important to understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the iron pnictides. Motivated by recent inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the nearly 100% detwinned BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, we study the spin dynamics of an $S=1$ frustrated bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model in the antiferromagnetic phase with wavevector $(π,0)$. The biquadratic interactions are treated in a dynamical way using a flavor-wave theory in an $SU(3)$ representation. Besides the magnon (dipolar) excitations, the biquadratic interactions give rise to quadrupolar e…
The pairing symmetry of the hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs is discussed with taking into account its multiband structure. The compatibility of the …
The puzzling nature of magnetic and lattice phase transitions of iron pnictides is investigated via a first-principles Wannier function analysis of representative parent compound LaOFeAs. A rare ferro-orbital ordering is found to give rise to the recently observed highly anisotropic magnetic coupling, and drive the phase transitions--without resorting to widely employed frustration or nesting picture. The revealed necessity of the additional orbital physics leads to a correlated electronic structure fundamentally distinct from that of the cuprates. In particular, the strong coupling to the mag…
The temperature and frequency dependences of the conductivity are derived from optical reflection and transmission measurements of electron doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals and films. The data is consistent with gap nodes or possibly a very small gap in the crossover region between these two possibilities. This can arise when one of the several pockets known to exist in these systems has extended s-wave gap symmetry with an anisotropic piece canceling or nearly so the isotropic part in some momentum direction. Alternatively, a node can be lifted by impurity scattering which reduces anisotropy. We…
We report the observation of a new superfluid phase of 3He -- polar phase. This phase appears in 3He confined in a new type of aerogel with nearly parallel arrangement of strands which play a role of ordered impurities. Our observations qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions and suggest that in other systems with unconventional Cooper pairing (e.g. in unconventional superconductors) similar phenomena may be found in presence of anisotropic impurities.
It has been shown that the relative stabilities of various superfluid states of 3He can be influenced by anisotropy in a silica aerogel framework. We prepared a suite of aerogel samples compressed up to 30% for which we performed pulsed NMR on 3He imbibed within the aerogel. We identified A and B-phases and determined their magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams as a function of strain. From these results we infer that the B-phase is distorted by negative strain forming an anisotropic superfluid state more stable than the A-phase.
Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in optimally - doped, $x=$0.35, as-grown ($T_c \approx$25 K, RRR=$ρ(300K)/ρ(T_c)$=4.5) and annealed ($T_c \approx$35 K, RRR=6.4) single crystals of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ iron - based superconductor. Annealing increases the RRR and decreases the absolute value of the London penetration depth from $λ(0) = 300 \pm 10$ nm in as-grown sample to $λ(0) = 275 \pm 10$ nm. At low temperatures, $λ(T) \sim T$ indicating superconducting gap with line nodes. Analysis of the full - temperature range superfluid density is consisten…
We use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and scanning SQUID susceptometry to measure the local superfluid density $ρ_{s}$ in Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals from 0.4 K to the critical temperature $T_c=18.5$ K. We observe that the penetration depth $λ$ varies about ten times more slowly with temperature than previously published, with a dependence that can be well described by a clean two-band fully gapped model. We demonstrate that MFM can measure the important and hard-to-determine absolute value of $λ$, as well as obtain its temperature dependence and spatial homogeneity. …
A rich variety of Fermi systems condense by forming bound pairs, including high temperature [1] and heavy fermion [2] superconductors, Sr2RuO4 [3], cold atomic gases [4], and superfluid 3He [5]. Some of these form exotic quantum states having non-zero orbital angular momentum. We have discovered, in the case of 3He, that anisotropic disorder, engineered from highly porous silica aerogel, stabilizes a chiral superfluid state that otherwise would not exist. Additionally, we find that the chiral axis of this state can be uniquely oriented with the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to …
In the novel superfluid polar phase realized in liquid 3He in highly anisotropic aerogels, a quantum transition to the polar-distorted A (PdA) phase may occur at a low but finite pressure Pc(0). It is shown that a nontrivial quantum dynamics of the critical fluctuation of the PdA order is induced by the presence of both the columnar-like impurity scattering leading to the Anderson's Theorem for the polar phase and the line node of the quasiparticle gap in the state, and that, in contrast to the situation of the normal to the B phase transition in isotropic aerogels, a weakly divergent behavior…
The critical field for superfluid $^3$He in axially compressed, anisotropic silica aerogel is shown to be the result of an anisotropic distribution of magnetic impurities affecting the superfluid $A$ phase. The critical field results from the fact that the $A$ phase is suppressed relative to the $B$ phase which is immune to the effects of magnetic impurities. In the absence of magnetic quasiparticle scattering in anisotropic aerogel, we find that the relative symmetry of $A$ and $B$ phase order parameters is the same as in isotropic aerogel, just as it is in pure superfluid $^3$He. These resul…
Using realistic multi-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonians and the T-matrix formalism, we explore the effects of a non-magnetic impurity on the local density of states in Fe-based compounds. We show that scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) has very specific anisotropic signatures that track the evolution of orbital splitting (OS) and antiferromagnetic gaps. Both anisotropies exhibit two patterns that split in energy with decreasing temperature, but for OS these two patterns map onto each other under 90 degree rotation. STS experiments that observe these signatures should expose the underlying …
We investigate the interplay of onsite Coulomb repulsion and various mechanisms breaking the fourfold lattice symmetry in a three-band model for the iron planes of iron-based superconductors. Using cluster-perturbation theory allows us to locally break the symmetry between the x- and y-directions without imposing long-range magnetic order. Previously investigated anisotropic magnetic couplings are compared to an orbital-ordering field and anisotropic hoppings. We find that all three mechanisms for a broken rotational symmetry lead to similar signatures once onsite interactions are strong enoug…
Motivated by recent experiments on liquid $^3$He reporting emergence of novel superfluid phases in globally anisotropic aerogels, our previous theory on superfluid $^3$He in globally anisotropic aerogels is extended to incorporate effects of an anisotropy of the quasiparticle scattering cross section on the strong coupling (SC) contributions to the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy on the basis of the spin-fluctuation (paramagnon) approach to the SC contributions developed by Brinkman et al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 10}, 2386 (1974)]. In the globally isotropic case, impurity effects on the SC correct…
The upper critical fields ($H_{c2}$) of the single crystals $\rm(Sr,Na)Fe_2As_2$ and $\rm Ba_{0.55}K_{0.45}Fe_2As_2$ were determined by means of measuring the electrical resistivity, $ ρ_{xx}(μ_0H)$, using the facilities of pulsed magnetic field at Los Alamos. In general, these compounds possess a very large upper critical field ($H_{c2}(0)$) with a weak anisotropic effect. The detailed curvature of $H_{c2}(T_c)$ may depend on the magnetic field orientation and the sample compositions. We argue that such a difference mainly results from the multi-band effect, which might be modified via doping…
Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_…
We consider the role of potential scatterers in the nematic phase of Fe-based superconductors above the transition temperature to the (pi,0) magnetic state but below the orthorhombic structural transition. The anisotropic spin fluctuations in this region can be frozen by disorder, to create elongated magnetic droplets whose anisotropy grows as the magnetic transition is approached. Such states act as strong anisotropic defect potentials which scatter with much higher probability perpendicular to their length than parallel, although the actual crystal symmetry breaking is tiny. We calculate the…
We present a novel mechanism of s-wave pairing in Fe-based superconductors. The mechanism involves holes near dxz/dyz pockets only and is applicable primarily to strongly hole doped materials. We argue that as long as the renormalized Hund's coupling J exceeds the renormalized inter-orbital Hubbard repulsion U', any finite spin-orbit coupling gives rise to s-wave superconductivity. This holds even at weak coupling and regardless of the strength of the intra-orbital Hubbard repulsion U. The transition temperature grows as the hole density decreases. The pairing gaps are four-fold symmetric, but…
We present a microscopic study of superconductivity in OsB2 , and discuss the origin and characteristic length scales of the superconducting state. From first-principles we show that OsB2 is characterized by three different Fermi sheets, and we prove that this fermiology complies with recent quantum-oscillation experiments. Using the found microscopic properties, and experimental data from the literature, we employ Ginzburg-Landau relations to reveal that OsB2 is a distinctly type-I superconductor with very low Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa - a rare property among compound materials. We show…
Motivated by the observation of spatially anisotropic exchange constants in the iron pnictide materials, we study the spin-wave spectra of the $J_{1a}-J_{1b}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg models on a square-lattice with nearest neighbor exchange $J_{1a}$ along x and $J_{1b}$ along y axis and a second neighbor exchange $J_2$. We focus on the regime, where the spins order at ($π,0$), and compute the spectra by systematic expansions around the Ising limit. We study both spin-half and spin-one Heisenberg models as well as a range of parameters to cover various cases proposed for the iron pnictide materials. T…
In this paper we explore the magnetic and orbital properties closely related to a tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition in iron pnictides based on both two- and five-orbital Hubbard models. The electron-lattice coupling, which interplays with electronic interaction, is self-consistently treated. Our results reveal that the orbital polarization stabilizes the spin density wave (SDW) order in both tetragonal and orthorhombic phases. However, the ferro-orbital density wave (F-ODW) only occurs in the orthorhombic phase rather than in the tetragonal one. Magnetic moments of Fe are sma…
Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although any uniaxial deformation leads to a wider A-like phase with the axial pairing in the pressure-temperature phase diagram, the vortex core states in the two phases in aerogel depend highly on the type of deformation. In a compressed aerogel, the first-order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in the B-like…
We examine the nature of the collective excitations in a strongly anisotropic system of bosons interacting via Coulomb interaction. Such a system has often been used in the past to model the effects of quantum and classical phase fluctuations on the superfluid density of underdoped cuprates. Depending on the anisotropy and the effective strength of the interaction we find four different regimes for the temperature dependence of the superfluid density. Coulomb interaction in underdoped cuprates is argued to be effectively short-ranged, and of order of unity in appropriately defined units.
The in-plane anisotropy of the electrical resistivity across the coupled orthorhombic and magnetic transitions of the iron pnictides has been extensively studied in the parent and electron-doped compounds. All these studies universally show that the resistivity $ρ_{a}$ across the long orthorhombic axis $a_{O}$ - along which the spins couple antiferromagnetically below the magnetic transition temperature - is smaller than the resistivity $ρ_{b}$ of the short orthorhombic axis $b_{O}$, i. e. $ρ_{a}<ρ_{b}$. Here we report that in the hole-doped compounds Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, as the …
It has been suggested that anisotropic quasiparticle scattering will stabilize anisotropic phases of superfluid $^3$He contained within highly porous silica aerogel. For example, global anisotropy introduced via uniaxial compression of aerogel might stabilize the axial state, which is called the A-phase in bulk superfluid 3He. Here we present measurements of the phase diagram of superfluid 3He in a 98% porous silica aerogel using transverse acoustic impedance methods. We show that uniaxial compression of the aerogel by 17% does not stabilize an axial phase.
We report the first direct measurements of superfluid density, ns(T) \propto λ-2(T), in films of Fe-pnictide superconductors. The magnetic penetration depth, λ(0), in our epitaxial, single-crystal Ba(CoxFe1-x)2As2 films near optimal doping (x=0.08) is 350 nm to 430 nm, comparable to bulk single crystals. The T-dependence of λ-2 indicates a small s-wave gap, 2Δ(0)/kBTc = 2.2 \pm 0.1. In detail, λ has power-law behavior at low T: λ(T)/λ(0) - 1 \approx 0.60*(T/Tc)2.5\pm0.1. The small gap, together with power-law behavior at low T, suggests strong intraband scattering on the larger-gap Fermi surfa…
We consider the impact of the competition among superconductivity, spin density wave, and nematic order in iron pnictides, and show that the ordering competition substantially reshapes the global phase diagram. We perform a detailed renormalization group analysis of an effective field theory of iron pnictides and derive the flow equations of all the physical parameters. Using these results, we find that superconductivity can be strongly suppressed by the ordering competition, and also extract the $T$-dependence of superfluid density. Moreover, the phase transitions may become first order. Inte…
We use scanning SQUID microscopy to investigate the behavior of vortices in the presence of twin boundaries in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. We show that the vortices avoid pinning on twin boundaries. Individual vortices move in a preferential way when manipulated with the SQUID: they tend to not cross a twin boundary, but rather to move parallel to it. This behavior can be explained by the observation of enhanced superfluid density on twin boundaries in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The observed repulsion from twin boundaries may be a mechanism for enhanced critical currents observed in t…
We investigate superfluid properties and strong-coupling effects in a one-component Fermi gas with an anisotropic p-wave interaction. Within the framework of the Gaussian fluctuation theory, we determine the superfluid transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, as well as the temperature $T_0$ at which the phase transition from the $p_x$-wave pairing state to the $p_x+ip_y$-wave state occurs below $T_{\rm c}$. We also show that while the anisotropy of the p-wave interaction enhances $T_{\rm c}$ in the strong-coupling regime, it suppresses $T_0$.
We study the superfluid pairing in a two-species gas of heteronuclear fermionic molecules with equal density. The interplay of the isotropic s-wave interaction and anisotropic long-range dipolar interaction reveals rich physics. We find that the single-particle momentum distribution has a characteristic ellipsoidal shape that can be reasonably represented by a deformation parameter $α$ defined similarly to the normal phase. Interesting momentum-dependent features of the order parameter are identified. We calculate the critical temperatures of both the singlet and triplet superfluid, suggesting…
A 2-orbital t-J model over the square lattice that describes low-energy electronic excitations in iron-pnictide high-Tc superconductors is analyzed with Schwinger-boson-slave-fermion meanfield theory and by exact numerical diagonalization on a finite system. A quantum critical point (QCP) is identified that separates a commensurate spin-density wave (cSDW) state at strong Hund's rule coupling from a hidden half-metal state at weak Hund's rule coupling when inter-orbital hole hopping is suppressed. Low-energy spinwaves that disperse anisotropically from cSDW momenta are predicted at the QCP. Ne…
We investigate superfluid properties of a one-component Fermi gas with a uniaxially anisotropic $p$-wave pairing interaction, $U_x>U_y=U_z$ (where $U_i$ ($i=x,y,z)$ is a $p_i$-wave pairing interaction). This type of interaction is considered to be realized in a $^{40}$K Fermi gas. Including pairing fluctuations within a strong-coupling $T$-matrix theory, we determine the $p_x$-wave superfluid phase transition temperature $T^{p_x}_{\rm c}$, as well as the other phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{p_x+ip_y}$ ($<T_{\rm c}^{p_x}$), below which the superfluid order parameter has the $p_x+ip_y$…
Stable pairing states of superfluid 3He in aerogel are examined in the case with a global uniaxial anisotropy which may be created by applying an uniaxial stress to the aerogel. Due to such a global anisotropy, the stability region of an ABM pairing state becomes wider. In an uniaxially stretched aerogel, the pure polar pairing state with a horizontal line node is predicted to occur, as a 3d superfluid phase, over a measurable width just below the superfluid transition at T_c(P). A possible relevance of the present results to the case with no global anisotropy is also discussed.
In this work we investigate the scaling properties of quasiparticles of Pnictide with "half-Dirac" node under magnetic field in vortex state. By computing the density of states, we aim to find in vortex state the form of non-Simon-Lee scaling predicted for such system by several recent works in non-vortex state. We find by exact diagonalization of the Bogoliubov-de Genne Hamiltonian and finite size scaling a $N(E)\sim \sqrt{E}$ power law in the case without magnetic field which agrees with analytical prediction. We consider the vortex state by first studying the hypothetical situation of unifo…
It may be possible to stabilize new superfluid phases of $^{3}$He with anisotropic silica aerogels. We discuss two methods that introduce anisotropy in the aerogel on length scales relevant to superfluid $^{3}$He. First, anisotropy can be induced with uniaxial strain. A second method generates anisotropy during the growth and drying stages. We have grown cylindrical $\sim$98% aerogels with anisotropy indicated by preferential radial shrinkage after supercritical drying and find that this shrinkage correlates with small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The growth-induced anisotropy was found to b…
In recent work it was shown that new anisotropic p-wave states of superfluid 3He can be stabilized within high porosity silica aerogel under uniform positive strain [1]. In contrast, the equilibrium phase in an unstrained aerogel, is the isotropic superfluid B-phase [2]. Here we report that this phase stability depends on the sign of the strain. For negative strain of ~20% achieved by compression, the B-phase can be made more stable than the anisotropic A-phase resulting in a tricritical point for A, B, and normal phases with a critical field of ~100 mT. From pulsed NMR measurements we identif…
We investigate the impact of spin anisotropic interactions, promoted by spin-orbit coupling, on the magnetic phase diagram of the iron-based superconductors. Three distinct magnetic phases with Bragg peaks at $(π,0)$ and $(0,π)$ are possible in these systems: one $C_2$ (i.e. orthorhombic) symmetric stripe magnetic phase and two $C_4$ (i.e. tetragonal) symmetric magnetic phases. While the spin anisotropic interactions allow the magnetic moments to point in any direction in the $C_2$ phase, they restrict the possible moment orientations in the $C_4$ phases. As a result, an interesting scenario a…
Recently the superconducting gap functions of the skutterudite PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ have been proposed [K. Maki et al, Europhys. Lett. {\bf 68}, 720 (2004)]. The superconductivity is spin-triplet and consists of at least 2 distinct phases in a magnetic field, which bears some resemblance to superfluid $ ^{3}$He. Here we present our analysis of the thermodynamic properties of these two superconducting states within the weak-coupling BCS theory. The superfluid density of the B phase is compared with recent experimental data.
The characteristic features of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$]$_5$ ("10-3-8") superconductor are relatively high anisotropy and a clear separation of superconductivity and structural/magnetic transitions, which allows studying the superconducting gap without complications due to the coexisting order parameters. The London penetration depth, measured in underdoped single crystals of 10-3-8 ($x =$ 0.028, 0.041, 0.042, and 0.097), shows behavior remarkably similar to other Fe-based superconductors, exhibiting robust power-law, $Δλ(T) = A T^n$. The exponent $n$ decreases from…
We study the superfluid density of the $\pm$s-wave state of the minimal two band model for the Fe-based superconductors and its evolution with impurity concentration. We show that the impurity scattering of the strong coupling limit induces the selfenergy of a generic form $Im Σ_{imp} (ω) \approx i γ+ i βω$ beyond a critical impurity concentration $Γ_{imp} > Γ_{crit}$. This form of $Im Σ_{imp} (ω)$ causes the temperature dependence of the superfluid density $[ρ_{s}(T) - ρ_{s}(0)] \approx - γT^2 -βT^3$. Combining with the full gap behavior of $ρ_{s}(T)$ for lower impurity concentration $Γ_{imp}…
We report the studies of detailed magnetic relaxation and isothermal magnetization measurements in the vortex state of the 112-type iron-pnictide Ca$_{0.82}$La$_{0.18}$Fe$_{0.96}$Ni$_{0.04}$As$_2$ superconductor with $T_c$ $\sim$ 22 K. In the isothermal $M(H)$, a well defined second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed in the entire temperature range below $T_c$ for measurements with $H$ $\parallel$ $c$-axis. However, for $H$ $\parallel$ $ab$-planes, the SMP feature is suppressed at low temperatures, which might be due to 2D Josephson vortices forming at low temperatures and high magne…
