The critical field for superfluid $^3$He in axially compressed, anisotropic silica aerogel is shown to be the result of an anisotropic distribution of magnetic impurities affecting the superfluid $A$ phase. The critical field results from the fact that the $A$ phase is suppressed relative to the $B$ phase which is immune to the effects of magnetic impurities. In the absence of magnetic quasiparticle scattering in anisotropic aerogel, we find that the relative symmetry of $A$ and $B$ phase order parameters is the same as in isotropic aerogel, just as it is in pure superfluid $^3$He. These results are of potential importance for understanding unconventional superconductivity.
Deformed aerogels induce a global anisotropy in the superfluid 3He and orient the orbital part of its order parameter. Here a phenomenological theory of the orientational effect of elastic deformations of aerogels on the superfluid phases of 3He in the spirit of conventional theory of elasticity is formulated. Phenomenological coefficients, entering basic relations, depend on properties of given aerogel in the non-deformed state. Examples of originally isotropic silica aerogel and axially symmetric "nematically ordered" aerogel are considered. Values of phenomenological coefficients are estima…
Role of inhomogeneous perturbations of nematic aerogel on the form of the order parameter emerging at the transition of liquid $^3$He in the superfluid state is considered. It is shown that a region of stability of the polar distorted ABM phase can begin right from the transition temperature. The symmetry argument is given, which selects the most favorable aerogel for stabilization of pure polar phase.
Superfluid 3He is an unconventional neutral superfluid in a p-wave state with three different superfluid phases each identified by a unique set of characteristic broken symmetries and non- trivial topology. Despite natural immunity of 3He from defects and impurity of any kind, it has been found that they can be artificially introduced with high porosity silica aerogel. Furthermore, it has been shown that this modified quantum liquid becomes a superfluid with remarkably sharp thermodynamic transitions from the normal state and between its various phases. They include new superfluid phases that …
It has been shown that the relative stabilities of various superfluid states of 3He can be influenced by anisotropy in a silica aerogel framework. We prepared a suite of aerogel samples compressed up to 30% for which we performed pulsed NMR on 3He imbibed within the aerogel. We identified A and B-phases and determined their magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams as a function of strain. From these results we infer that the B-phase is distorted by negative strain forming an anisotropic superfluid state more stable than the A-phase.
We present a free energy functional for superfluid 3He in the presence of homogeneously distributed impurity disorder which extends the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional to all temperatures. We use the new free energy functional to calculate the thermodynamic potential, entropy, heat capacity and density of states for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in homogeneous, isotropic aerogel.
Liquid $^3$He confined in low-density, highly porous random solids such as silica aerogel provides tuneable systems to study the effects of disorder and confinement on the properties of a quantum liquid. New superfluid phases result from the interplay between disorder, confinement and complex symmetry-breaking. An extended bibliography is appended. An edited and abbreviated version of this article appeared in Physics Today 71, 11, 30 (2018).
We report the observation of a new superfluid phase of 3He -- polar phase. This phase appears in 3He confined in a new type of aerogel with nearly parallel arrangement of strands which play a role of ordered impurities. Our observations qualitatively agree with theoretical predictions and suggest that in other systems with unconventional Cooper pairing (e.g. in unconventional superconductors) similar phenomena may be found in presence of anisotropic impurities.
The equal-spin pairing (ESP) state, the so-called A-like phase, of superfluid $^3$He in aerogels is studied theoretically in the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) region by examining thermodynamics, and the resulting equilibrium phase diagram is mapped out. We find that, among the ABM, planar, and robust pairing states, the ABM state with presumably quasi long-ranged superfluid order is the best candidate of the A-like phase with a strange lowering of the polycritical point (PCP) observed experimentally.
Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although any uniaxial deformation leads to a wider A-like phase with the axial pairing in the pressure-temperature phase diagram, the vortex core states in the two phases in aerogel depend highly on the type of deformation. In a compressed aerogel, the first-order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in the B-like…
We report results of experiments with superfluid 3He confined in aerogels with parallel strands which lead to anisotropic scattering of 3He quasiparticles. We vary boundary conditions for the scattering by covering the strands by different numbers of atomic 4He layers and observe that the superfluid phase diagram and the nature of superfluid phases strongly depend on the coverage. We assume that the main reason of these phenomena is a magnetic channel of the scattering which becomes important at low coverages. Our results show that the magnetic channel also may be important in other Fermi syst…
The discovery of superfluid $^{3}$He in high porosity silica aerogels, and subsequent experimental and theoretical work, have led to a better general understanding of quasiparticle scattering from impurities in unconventional pairing systems. It is immensely helpful for understanding impurity effects in the case of superfluid $^{3}$He that the structure of its order parameter is well-established. An overview of impurity effects is presented with emphasis on those experiments which have a quantitative interpretation in terms of theoretical models for homogeneous and inhomogeneous scattering. Th…
In recent work it was shown that new anisotropic p-wave states of superfluid 3He can be stabilized within high porosity silica aerogel under uniform positive strain [1]. In contrast, the equilibrium phase in an unstrained aerogel, is the isotropic superfluid B-phase [2]. Here we report that this phase stability depends on the sign of the strain. For negative strain of ~20% achieved by compression, the B-phase can be made more stable than the anisotropic A-phase resulting in a tricritical point for A, B, and normal phases with a critical field of ~100 mT. From pulsed NMR measurements we identif…
We have performed longitudinal ultrasound (9.5 MHz) attenuation measurements in the B-phase of superfluid $^3$He in 98% porosity aerogel down to the zero temperature limit for a wide range of pressures at zero magnetic field. The absolute attenuation was determined by direct transmission of sound pulses. Compared to the bulk fluid, our results revealed a drastically different behavior in attenuation, which is consistent with theoretical accounts with gapless excitations and a collision drag effect.
A rich variety of Fermi systems condense by forming bound pairs, including high temperature [1] and heavy fermion [2] superconductors, Sr2RuO4 [3], cold atomic gases [4], and superfluid 3He [5]. Some of these form exotic quantum states having non-zero orbital angular momentum. We have discovered, in the case of 3He, that anisotropic disorder, engineered from highly porous silica aerogel, stabilizes a chiral superfluid state that otherwise would not exist. Additionally, we find that the chiral axis of this state can be uniquely oriented with the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to …
Superfluid 3He-A in a fully characterized stretched aerogel, used in previous work [1], has been studied for parallel and perpendicular orientations of the magnetic field relative to the anisotropy axis of the aerogel. Consistently, we find that an equal spin pairing state (ESP) is stabilized down to the lowest temperature. From our pulsed NMR frequency shifts as a function of temperature and tip angle, the orientation of the orbital angular momentum l has been determined. The aerogel anisotropy introduced by uniaxial stretching tends to align l in the axial state parallel to the strain axis, …
In a p-wave Fermi superfluid suffering from the nonmagnetic impurity scatterings, a coefficient of a gradient term becomes divergent upon cooling. Consequences of this divergent rigidity in the stable vortices in the B phase in globally isotropic aerogel are considered where the "impurity scattering" events are brought by the aerogel structure. For a moderately strong "impurity scatterings", the superfluid transition line T_c(P) has a quantum critical point at a low but finite pressure. We find that, with decreasing T_c via the lowering of the pressure, the distance between the half cores comp…
In the novel superfluid polar phase realized in liquid 3He in highly anisotropic aerogels, a quantum transition to the polar-distorted A (PdA) phase may occur at a low but finite pressure Pc(0). It is shown that a nontrivial quantum dynamics of the critical fluctuation of the PdA order is induced by the presence of both the columnar-like impurity scattering leading to the Anderson's Theorem for the polar phase and the line node of the quasiparticle gap in the state, and that, in contrast to the situation of the normal to the B phase transition in isotropic aerogels, a weakly divergent behavior…
Motivated by recent experiments on liquid $^3$He reporting emergence of novel superfluid phases in globally anisotropic aerogels, our previous theory on superfluid $^3$He in globally anisotropic aerogels is extended to incorporate effects of an anisotropy of the quasiparticle scattering cross section on the strong coupling (SC) contributions to the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy on the basis of the spin-fluctuation (paramagnon) approach to the SC contributions developed by Brinkman et al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 10}, 2386 (1974)]. In the globally isotropic case, impurity effects on the SC correct…
We have designed an experiment to study the role of global anisotropic quasiparticle scattering on the dirty aerogel superfluid 3He system. We observe significant regions of two stable phases at temperatures below the superfluid transition at a pressure of 25 bar for a 98% aerogel.
Superfluid $^3$He confined in aerogel offers a unique chance to study the effects of a short mean free path on the properties of a well defined superfluid Fermi liquid with anisotropic pairing. Transport coefficients and collective excitations, e.g. longitudinal sound, are expected to react sensitively to a short mean free path and to offer the possibility for testing recently developed models for quasiparticle scattering at aerogel strands. Sound experiments, together with a theoretical analysis based on Fermi liquid theory for systems with short mean free paths, should give valuable insights…
It has been suggested that anisotropic quasiparticle scattering will stabilize anisotropic phases of superfluid $^3$He contained within highly porous silica aerogel. For example, global anisotropy introduced via uniaxial compression of aerogel might stabilize the axial state, which is called the A-phase in bulk superfluid 3He. Here we present measurements of the phase diagram of superfluid 3He in a 98% porous silica aerogel using transverse acoustic impedance methods. We show that uniaxial compression of the aerogel by 17% does not stabilize an axial phase.
Stable pairing states of superfluid 3He in aerogel are examined in the case with a global uniaxial anisotropy which may be created by applying an uniaxial stress to the aerogel. Due to such a global anisotropy, the stability region of an ABM pairing state becomes wider. In an uniaxially stretched aerogel, the pure polar pairing state with a horizontal line node is predicted to occur, as a 3d superfluid phase, over a measurable width just below the superfluid transition at T_c(P). A possible relevance of the present results to the case with no global anisotropy is also discussed.
We present data for energy dissipation factor (Q^{-1}) over a broad temperature range at various pressures of a torsion pendulum setup used to study 3He confined in a 98% open silica aerogel. Values for Q^{-1} above T_c are temperature independent and have a weak pressure dependence. Below T_c, a deliberate axial compression of the aerogel by 10% widens the range of metastability for a superfluid Equal Spin Pairing (ESP) state; we observe this ESP phase on cooling and the B phase on warming over an extended temperature region. While the dissipation for the B phase tends to zero as T goes to 0,…
Superfluid 3He confined to high porosity silica aerogel is the paradigm system for understanding impurity effects in unconventional superconductors. However, a crucial first step has been elusive; exact identification of the microscopic states of the superfluid in the presence of quenched disorder. Using a new class of highly uniform aerogel materials, we report pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance experiments that demonstrate definitively that the two observed superfluid states in aerogel are impure versions of the isotropic and axial p-wave states. The theoretically predicted destruction of lon…
The heat capacity of pure ^3He in low density aerogel is measured at 22.5 bar. The superfluid response is simultaneously monitored with a torsional oscillator. A slightly rounded heat capacity peak, 65 mu K in width, is observed at the ^3He-aerogel superfluid transition, T_{ca}. Subtracting the bulk ^3He contribution, the heat capacity shows a Fermi-liquid form above T_{ca}. The heat capacity attributed to superfluid within the aerogel can be fit with a rounded BCS form, and accounts for 0.30 of the non-bulk fluid in the aerogel, indicating a substantial reduction in the superfluid order param…
We have performed Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) on uniaxially strained aerogels and measured the strain-induced structural anisotropy. We use a model to connect our SAXS results to anisotropy of the 3He quasiparticle mean free path in aerogel.
We report theoretical results for heat transport by quasiparticle excitations in superfluid $^3$He infused into silica aerogel engineered with uniaxial anisotropy. For this system two distinct equal spin pairing (ESP) superfluid phases have been reported based on NMR spectroscopy. Theoretical analysis predicts the first ESP state to be the chiral A phase with chiral axis aligned along the strain axis, and the lower temperature phase to be a polar-distorted chiral phase with random transverse fluctuations in the orientation of the chiral axis. We report calculations of heat transport for the hi…
NMR experiments on superfluid 3He in a nematic aerogel have shown that the stability of the half-quantum vortex (HQV) realized in the polar phase depends on the relative direction between the magnetic field and the anisotropy axis brought by the aerogel. The vortex energy in the polar phase is examined in terms of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy incorporating the dipole energy, and the reason why the HQV in the polar phase in nematic aerogels became unstable in a transverse magnetic field upon a field-cooling is explained.
Within a phenomenological approach possible forms of the order parameter of the superfluid phases of 3He in a vicinity of the transition temperature are discussed. Effect of aerogel is described by a random tensor field interacting with the orbital part of the order parameter. With respect to their interaction with the random tensor field a group of "robust" order parameters which can maintain long-range order in a presence of the random field is specified. Robust order parameters, corresponding to Equal Spin Pairing (ESP) states are found and proposed as candidates for the observed A-like sup…
It may be possible to stabilize new superfluid phases of $^{3}$He with anisotropic silica aerogels. We discuss two methods that introduce anisotropy in the aerogel on length scales relevant to superfluid $^{3}$He. First, anisotropy can be induced with uniaxial strain. A second method generates anisotropy during the growth and drying stages. We have grown cylindrical $\sim$98% aerogels with anisotropy indicated by preferential radial shrinkage after supercritical drying and find that this shrinkage correlates with small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The growth-induced anisotropy was found to b…
The proximity effect in superfluid $^3$He partly filled with high porosity aerogel is discussed. This system can be regarded as a dirty Fermi liquid/spin-triplet p-wave superfluid junction. Our attention is mainly paid to the case when the dirty layer is in the normal state owing to the impurity pair-breaking effect by the aerogel. We use the quasiclassical Green's function to determine self-consistently the spatial variations of the p-wave order parameter and the impurity self-energy. On the basis of the fully self-consistent calculation, we analyze the spatial dependence of the pair function…
Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although the A-like phase with axial pairing is extended by any uniaxial deformation, the vortex core states in the two phases depend highly on the type of deformation in aerogel: In a compressed aerogel, the first order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in B-like phase, while no strange vortex core is expected…
Interpretation of the recent experiments of V.V. Dmitriev et. al. on longitudinal resonance in the A-like phase, based on specific properties of "robust" order parameter is proposed.
Liquid 3He confined in silica aerogel provides us with a unique system to study the effects of quenched disorder on the properties of a strongly correlated quantum liquid. The superfluid phases display interplay between disorder and complex symmetry-breaking.
Measurements of superfluid $^3$He in 98% aerogel demonstrate the existence of a metastable \emph{A}-like phase and a stable \emph{B}-like phase. It has been suggested that the relative stability of these two phases is controlled by anisotropic quasiparticle scattering in the aerogel. Anisotropic scattering produced by axial compression of the aerogel has been predicted to stabilize the axial state of superfluid $^3$He. To explore this possiblity, we used transverse acoustic impedance to map out the phase diagram of superfluid $^3$He in a $\sim 98$% porous silica aerogel subjected to 17% axial …
Recently, one analog of the Anderson's Theorem for the $s$-wave superconductor has attracted much interest in the context of the $p$-wave polar pairing state of superfluid $^3$He in a model aerogel in the limit of strong uniaxial anisotropy. We discuss to what extent the theorem is satisfied in the polar phase in real aerogels by examining the normal to polar transition temperature $T_c$ and the low temperature behavior of the superfluid energy gap under an anisotropy of a moderate strength and comparing the obtained results with experimental data. The situation in which the Anderson's theorem…
Within a phenomenological approach a criterion for a choice of forms of the order parameter of the superfluid phases of 3He in aerogel in a vicinity of the transition temperature is derived. The order parameter of bulk B-phase of 3He meets this criterion and that of the bulk A-phase doesn`t. A class of order parameters of Equal Spin Pairing (ESP) type meeting the derived criterion is discussed. Order parameters belonging to this class are proposed as candidates for the observed A-like superfluid phase of liquid 3He in aerogel. Effect of magnetic field on the order parameters of this class is c…
We present results of high magnetic field experiments in pure $^3$He (in the absence of $^4$He coverage) in nematic aerogel. In this case the aerogel strands are covered with few atomic layers of solid paramagnetic $^3$He, which enables the spin-exchange mechanism for $^3$He quasiparticles scattering. Our earlier NMR experiments showed that in low fields, instead of the polar phase, the A phase is expected to emerge in nematic aerogel. We use a vibrating wire resonator with the sample of aerogel attached to it and measure temperature dependencies of resonance properties of the resonator at dif…
Stimulated by the results of NMR experiments with superfluid $^3$He in "nematically ordered" aerogel [1] we report on the results of phenomenological analysis of stability of different phases of superfluid $^3$He subjected to a strong homogeneous uniaxial anisotropy. On a basis of this analysis we suggest a form of the order parameter for the new ESP2 phase observed in the quoted experiments. In the weak coupling limit the suggested order parameter approaches that of the axi-planar phase. We discuss a possible experimental check of the proposed identification of the new phase.
The conventional theory of superconducting alloys does not take into account a discreet character of impurities. Experimental data for superfluid $^3$He in aerogel and for some of high-$T_c$ superconductors reveal a significant discrepancy between the observed temperatures $T_c$ of their transitions in the superfluid or superconducting state and that predicted by the theory. Here a theoretical scheme is presented for finding corrections to the $T_c$ originating from spatial correlations between impurities. Analysis is limited to the Ginzburg and Landau temperature region. The shift of $T_c$ wi…
The polar phase of superfluid $^3$He is stable in "nematically ordered" densed aerogel. A rotating vessel with the polar superfluid can be filled either by an array of the single quantum vortices or by an array of the half-quantum vortices. It is shown that the inhomogeneous distribution of the spin part of the order parameter arising in an array of half-quantum vortices in strong enough magnetic field tilted to the average direction of aerogel strands leads to the appearance of a satellite in the NMR signal shifted in the negative direction with respect to the Larmor frequency. The satellite …
Effects of impurity scatterings on the strong coupling (SC) contribution, stabilizing the ABM (axial) pairing state, to the quartic term of the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy of superfluid $^3$He are theoretically studied to examine recent observations suggestive of an anomalously small SC effect in superfluid $^3$He in aerogels. To study the SC corrections, two approaches are used. One is based on a perturbation in the short-range repulsive interaction, and the other is a phenomenological approach used previously for the bulk liquid by Sauls and Serene [Phys.Rev.B 24, 183 (1981)]. It is fou…
Using liquid 3He in aerogel as an example, it is shown that correlations in positions of impurities affect the temperature $T_c$ of transition of Fermi liquid in an unconventional superfluid or superconductive state. The effect is significant if the correlation length for impurities is greater than the coherence length in the superfluid or superconductive state $ξ_0$. For 3He in aerogel the suppression of $T_c$ is expressed in terms of the structure factor of aerogel. With the account of the fractal structure of aerogel a simple expression is obtained for the decrease of $T_c$ from its clean v…
We report results of experiments with liquid $^3$He confined in a high porosity anisotropic nanostructure which we call planar aerogel. This aerogel consists of nanofibers (with diameters $\sim10$ nm) which are randomly oriented in the plane normal to the specific axis. We used two samples of planar aerogel prepared using different techniques. We have found that on cooling from the normal phase of $^3$He the superfluid transition in both samples occurs into an equal spin pairing superfluid phase. NMR properties of this phase qualitatively agree with the properties of the superfluid A phase in …
Motivated by the recent observation and argument on a large half-quantum vortex (HQV) pair connencted by a Kibble wall in superfluid 3He in nematic aerogels, we numerically study to what extent a huge HQV pair can intrinsically occur with no pinning effect due to the aerogel structure in the polar-distorted B (PdB) phase of superfluid 3He. By fully examining the impurity-scattering induced pairing vertex, the emergence of Anderson's Theorem in the p-wave superfluid is verified in the two opposite limits, the isotropic and strongly anisotropic limits. Solving numerically the resulting Ginzburg-…
The phase diagram of the superfluid phases of $^{3}$He in 98% aerogel was determined in the range of pressure from 15 to 33 bars and for fields up to 3 kG using high-frequency sound. The superfluid transition in aerogel at 33.4 bars is field independent from 0 to 5 kG and shows no evidence of an $A_{1}-A_{2}$ splitting. The first-order transition between the A and B-phases is suppressed by a magnetic field, and exhibits strong supercooling at high pressures. We show that the equilibrium phase in zero applied field is the B-phase with at most a region of A-phase {\small $\alt$} 20 $μ$K just bel…
We present results of experiments in superfluid phases of 3He confined in aerogel which strands are nearly parallel to one another. High temperature superfluid phases of 3He in this aerogel (ESP1 and ESP2) are chiral phases and have polar distorted ABM order parameter which orbital part forms 2D Larkin-Imry-Ma state. We demonstrate that this state can be anisotropic if the aerogel is squeezed in direction transverse to the strands. Values of this anisotropy in ESP1 and ESP2 phases are different, what leads to different NMR properties.
I report theoretical analysis and predictions for the equilibrium phases of superfluid 3He infused into a low-density, homogeneous uniaxial aerogel. Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory for a class of equal-spin-pairing (ESP) states in a medium with uniaxial anisotropy is developed and used to analyze recent experiments on uniaxially strained aerogels. For 3He in an axially "stretched" aerogel GL theory predicts a transition from normal liquid into a chiral ABM phase at T_c1 in which the chirality axis, l, is aligned along the strain axis. This orbitally aligned state, is protected from random fluctuat…
We have studied 4He films adsorbed in two porous glasses, aerogel and Vycor, using high precision torsional oscillator and DC calorimetry techniques. Our investigation focused on the onset of superfluidity at low temperatures as the 4He coverage is increased. Torsional oscillator measurements of the 4He-aerogel system were used to determine the superfluid density of films with transition temperatures as low as 20 mK. Heat capacity measurements of the 4He-Vycor system probed the excitation spectrum of both non-superfluid and superfluid films for temperatures down to 10 mK. Both sets of measurem…
It is shown that if impurities in superfluid 3He have form of infinitely long non-magnetic strands, which are straight, parallel to each other and reflect quasi-particles specularly, the temperature of transition of liquid 3He from the normal into the polar phase coincides with that for the bulk liquid without impurities. Magnetic scattering lowers transition temperature for the polar phase in analogy with the conventional superconductors. These results are discussed in connection with the recent experimental findings.
The argument of V.P.Mineev and M.E.Zhitomirsky is based on unjustified omission of contribution of fluctuations to the free energy of superfluid 3He in aerogel.
Recent theoretical and experimental studies of superfluid $^3$He in aerogels with a global anisotropy, e.g., due to an external stress, have definitely shown that the A-like phase with an equal spin pairing (ESP) in such aerogel samples is in the ABM (or, axial) pairing state. In this paper, the A-like phase of superfluid $^3$He in globally {\it isotropic} aerogel is studied in details by assuming a weakly disordered system in which singular topological defects are absent. Through calculation of the free energy, a disordered ABM state is found to be the best candidate of the pairing state of t…
Phenomenological criterion of a choice of the order parameter for superfluid phases of $^3$He in aerogel in a near vicinity of the transition temperature is formulated. Except for the B-phase this criterion is met by the order parameter of axiplanar phase for a special choice of its parameters. It is proposed as a limiting at $T\to T_c$ form of the order parameter for the observed A-like phase.
Porous aerogel is a source of elastic scattering in superfluid 3He and modifies the properties of the superfluid, suppressing the transition temperature and order parameter. The specific heat jumps for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in aerogel have been measured as a function of pressure and interpreted using the homogeneous and inhomogeneous isotropic scattering models. The specific heat jumps for other p-wave states are estimated for comparison.
