Recent theoretical and experimental studies of superfluid $^3$He in aerogels with a global anisotropy, e.g., due to an external stress, have definitely shown that the A-like phase with an equal spin pairing (ESP) in such aerogel samples is in the ABM (or, axial) pairing state. In this paper, the A-like phase of superfluid $^3$He in globally {\it isotropic} aerogel is studied in details by assuming a weakly disordered system in which singular topological defects are absent. Through calculation of the free energy, a disordered ABM state is found to be the best candidate of the pairing state of the globally isotropic A-like phase. Further, it is found through a one-loop renormalization group calculation that the coreless continuous vortices (or, vortex-skyrmions) are irrelevant to the long-distance behavior of the disorder-induced textures, and that the superfluidity is maintained in spite of lack of the conventional off-diagonal long range order. Therefore, the globally isotropic A-like phase at weak disorder is, like in the case with a global stretched anisotropy, a superfluid glass with the ABM pairing.
The order parameter of the quasi-isotropic superfluid A-like phase of 3He is rewritten in a simple form. Effect of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility of this phase on the frequencies of the spatially uniform oscillations of spin and the spin part of its order parameter are found. Anisotropy of susceptibility has pronounced effect on the low-frequency mode, which is analogous to nutations of the asymmetric top. Possibility of observation of the nutation-like mode is discussed.
In a p-wave Fermi superfluid suffering from the nonmagnetic impurity scatterings, a coefficient of a gradient term becomes divergent upon cooling. Consequences of this divergent rigidity in the stable vortices in the B phase in globally isotropic aerogel are considered where the "impurity scattering" events are brought by the aerogel structure. For a moderately strong "impurity scatterings", the superfluid transition line T_c(P) has a quantum critical point at a low but finite pressure. We find that, with decreasing T_c via the lowering of the pressure, the distance between the half cores comp…
It has been suggested that anisotropic quasiparticle scattering will stabilize anisotropic phases of superfluid $^3$He contained within highly porous silica aerogel. For example, global anisotropy introduced via uniaxial compression of aerogel might stabilize the axial state, which is called the A-phase in bulk superfluid 3He. Here we present measurements of the phase diagram of superfluid 3He in a 98% porous silica aerogel using transverse acoustic impedance methods. We show that uniaxial compression of the aerogel by 17% does not stabilize an axial phase.
Superfluid 3He confined to high porosity silica aerogel is the paradigm system for understanding impurity effects in unconventional superconductors. However, a crucial first step has been elusive; exact identification of the microscopic states of the superfluid in the presence of quenched disorder. Using a new class of highly uniform aerogel materials, we report pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance experiments that demonstrate definitively that the two observed superfluid states in aerogel are impure versions of the isotropic and axial p-wave states. The theoretically predicted destruction of lon…
Core structures of a single vortex in A-like and B-like phases of superfluid 3He in uniaxially compressed and stretched aerogels are studied by numerically solving Ginzburg-Landau equations derived microscopically. It is found that, although any uniaxial deformation leads to a wider A-like phase with the axial pairing in the pressure-temperature phase diagram, the vortex core states in the two phases in aerogel depend highly on the type of deformation. In a compressed aerogel, the first-order vortex core transition (VCT) previously seen in the bulk B phase appears at any pressure in the B-like…
Motivated by recent experiments on liquid $^3$He reporting emergence of novel superfluid phases in globally anisotropic aerogels, our previous theory on superfluid $^3$He in globally anisotropic aerogels is extended to incorporate effects of an anisotropy of the quasiparticle scattering cross section on the strong coupling (SC) contributions to the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy on the basis of the spin-fluctuation (paramagnon) approach to the SC contributions developed by Brinkman et al. [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 10}, 2386 (1974)]. In the globally isotropic case, impurity effects on the SC correct…
As a consequence of a continuous degeneracy of the order parameter of the superfluid 3He the quenched disorder in a form of aerogel gives rise both to a disruption of the orientational long-range order of the condensate and to a significant change of the order parameter itself. There exist a class of quasi-isotropic order parameters which are not sensitive to the disorienting effect of aerogel. While the BW order parameter belongs to this class the ABM does not. Possible candidate for the order parameter of the observed A-like phase is discussed.
We present a free energy functional for superfluid 3He in the presence of homogeneously distributed impurity disorder which extends the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional to all temperatures. We use the new free energy functional to calculate the thermodynamic potential, entropy, heat capacity and density of states for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in homogeneous, isotropic aerogel.
The pressure dependence of the order parameter in superfluid $^3$He is amazingly simple. In the Ginzburg-Landau regime, i.e. close to $T_c$, the square of the order parameter can be accurately measured by its proportionality to NMR frequency shifts and is strictly linear in pressure. This behavior is replicated for superfluid $^3$He imbibed in isotropic and anisotropic silica aerogels. The proportionality factor is constrained by the symmetry of the superfluid state and is an important signature of the corresponding superfluid phase. For the purpose of identifying various new superfluid states…
Deformed aerogels induce a global anisotropy in the superfluid 3He and orient the orbital part of its order parameter. Here a phenomenological theory of the orientational effect of elastic deformations of aerogels on the superfluid phases of 3He in the spirit of conventional theory of elasticity is formulated. Phenomenological coefficients, entering basic relations, depend on properties of given aerogel in the non-deformed state. Examples of originally isotropic silica aerogel and axially symmetric "nematically ordered" aerogel are considered. Values of phenomenological coefficients are estima…
The critical field for superfluid $^3$He in axially compressed, anisotropic silica aerogel is shown to be the result of an anisotropic distribution of magnetic impurities affecting the superfluid $A$ phase. The critical field results from the fact that the $A$ phase is suppressed relative to the $B$ phase which is immune to the effects of magnetic impurities. In the absence of magnetic quasiparticle scattering in anisotropic aerogel, we find that the relative symmetry of $A$ and $B$ phase order parameters is the same as in isotropic aerogel, just as it is in pure superfluid $^3$He. These resul…
We study the superfluid pairing in a two-species gas of heteronuclear fermionic molecules with equal density. The interplay of the isotropic s-wave interaction and anisotropic long-range dipolar interaction reveals rich physics. We find that the single-particle momentum distribution has a characteristic ellipsoidal shape that can be reasonably represented by a deformation parameter $α$ defined similarly to the normal phase. Interesting momentum-dependent features of the order parameter are identified. We calculate the critical temperatures of both the singlet and triplet superfluid, suggesting…
In recent work it was shown that new anisotropic p-wave states of superfluid 3He can be stabilized within high porosity silica aerogel under uniform positive strain [1]. In contrast, the equilibrium phase in an unstrained aerogel, is the isotropic superfluid B-phase [2]. Here we report that this phase stability depends on the sign of the strain. For negative strain of ~20% achieved by compression, the B-phase can be made more stable than the anisotropic A-phase resulting in a tricritical point for A, B, and normal phases with a critical field of ~100 mT. From pulsed NMR measurements we identif…
We develop a low-energy model of a unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state. Because the underlying rotational and translational symmetries are broken spontaneously, this gapless superfluid is a smectic liquid crystal, that exhibits fluctuations that are qualitatively stronger than in a conventional superfluid, thus requiring a fully nonlinear description of its Goldstone modes. Consequently, at nonzero temperature the LO superfluid is an algebraic phase even in 3d. It exhibits half-integer vortex-dislocation defects, whose unbinding leads to transitions to a superfluid nematic and other p…
In the novel superfluid polar phase realized in liquid 3He in highly anisotropic aerogels, a quantum transition to the polar-distorted A (PdA) phase may occur at a low but finite pressure Pc(0). It is shown that a nontrivial quantum dynamics of the critical fluctuation of the PdA order is induced by the presence of both the columnar-like impurity scattering leading to the Anderson's Theorem for the polar phase and the line node of the quasiparticle gap in the state, and that, in contrast to the situation of the normal to the B phase transition in isotropic aerogels, a weakly divergent behavior…
Porous aerogel is a source of elastic scattering in superfluid 3He and modifies the properties of the superfluid, suppressing the transition temperature and order parameter. The specific heat jumps for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in aerogel have been measured as a function of pressure and interpreted using the homogeneous and inhomogeneous isotropic scattering models. The specific heat jumps for other p-wave states are estimated for comparison.
Assisted by general symmetry arguments and a many-body invariant, we introduce a phase of matter that constitutes a topological SO(5) superfluid. Key to this finding is the realization of an exactly solvable model that displays some similarities with a minimal model of superfluid $^3$He. We study its quantum phase diagram and correlations, and find exotic superfluid as well as metallic phases in the repulsive sector. At the critical point separating trivial and nontrivial superfluid phases, our Hamiltonian reduces to the globally SO(5)-symmetric Gaudin model with a degenerate ground manifold t…
Exact results of pair transfer probabilities for the Richardson model with equidistant or random level spacing are presented. The results are then compared either to particle-particle random phase approximation (ppRPA) in the normal phase or quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) in the superfluid phase. We show that both ppRPA and QRPA are globally well reproducing the exact case although some differences are seen in the superfluid case. In particular the QRPA overestimates the pair transfer probabilities to excited states in the vicinity of the normal-superfluid phase transition, w…
We derive sum rules for a uniform, isotropic superfluid quark-gluon plasma with massless quarks, first laying out the phenomenological equations obeyed by a color superconductor in terms of macroscopic observables such as the superfluid mass and baryon densities, and the electric and magnetic gluon masses, and then expressing these quantities in terms of equilibrium correlation functions. From the transverse part of the long wavelength baryon current-momentum correlation function we derive an exact expression for the superfluid baryon density, and from the longitudinal part, an f-sum rule. Fro…

Measurements of superfluid $^3$He in 98% aerogel demonstrate the existence of a metastable \emph{A}-like phase and a stable \emph{B}-like phase. It has been suggested that the relative stability of these two phases is controlled by anisotropic quasiparticle scattering in the aerogel. Anisotropic scattering produced by axial compression of the aerogel has been predicted to stabilize the axial state of superfluid $^3$He. To explore this possiblity, we used transverse acoustic impedance to map out the phase diagram of superfluid $^3$He in a $\sim 98$% porous silica aerogel subjected to 17% axial …
We investigate superfluid properties of a one-component Fermi gas with a uniaxially anisotropic $p$-wave pairing interaction, $U_x>U_y=U_z$ (where $U_i$ ($i=x,y,z)$ is a $p_i$-wave pairing interaction). This type of interaction is considered to be realized in a $^{40}$K Fermi gas. Including pairing fluctuations within a strong-coupling $T$-matrix theory, we determine the $p_x$-wave superfluid phase transition temperature $T^{p_x}_{\rm c}$, as well as the other phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{p_x+ip_y}$ ($<T_{\rm c}^{p_x}$), below which the superfluid order parameter has the $p_x+ip_y$…
The B-phase of superfluid $^3$He is a 3D time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superfluid with an isotropic energy gap separating the ground-state and bulk continuum states. We report calculations of surface spectrum, spin- and mass current densities originating from the Andreev surface states for confined $^3$He-B. The surface states are Majorana Fermions with their spins polarized transverse to their direction of propagation along the surface. The negative energy states give rise to a ground-state helical spin current confined on the surface. The spectral functions reveal the subtle role…
We present results of high magnetic field experiments in pure $^3$He (in the absence of $^4$He coverage) in nematic aerogel. In this case the aerogel strands are covered with few atomic layers of solid paramagnetic $^3$He, which enables the spin-exchange mechanism for $^3$He quasiparticles scattering. Our earlier NMR experiments showed that in low fields, instead of the polar phase, the A phase is expected to emerge in nematic aerogel. We use a vibrating wire resonator with the sample of aerogel attached to it and measure temperature dependencies of resonance properties of the resonator at dif…
Motivated by the recent observation and argument on a large half-quantum vortex (HQV) pair connencted by a Kibble wall in superfluid 3He in nematic aerogels, we numerically study to what extent a huge HQV pair can intrinsically occur with no pinning effect due to the aerogel structure in the polar-distorted B (PdB) phase of superfluid 3He. By fully examining the impurity-scattering induced pairing vertex, the emergence of Anderson's Theorem in the p-wave superfluid is verified in the two opposite limits, the isotropic and strongly anisotropic limits. Solving numerically the resulting Ginzburg-…
We present the first theoretical calculation of the pressure-temperature-field phase diagram for the vortex phases of rotating superfluid $^3$He-B. Based on a strong-coupling extension of the Ginzburg-Landau theory that accounts for the relative stability of the bulk A and B phases of $^3$He at all pressures, we report calculations for the internal structure and free energies of distinct broken-symmetry vortices in rotating superfluid $^3$He-B. Theoretical results for the equilibrium vortex phase diagram in zero field and an external field of $H=284\,\mbox{G}$ parallel to the rotation axis, $\…
Recent experiments on superfluid $^3$He in globally anisotropic aerogels have shown realization of the polar superfluid phase and of the half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in this phase upon rotation. To clarify why the HQVs, which had not been detected clearly in the A phase of the bulk liquid, have been realized in the polar phase, we theoretically examine the relative stability of a HQV-pair against a single phase vortex in both the bulk A-phase and the polar phase in an aerogel. By taking care of important roles of a higher order gradient term, which assists the stability of HQVs but has never b…
In this paper we study the quantum phase transition between the insulating and the globally coherent superfluid phases in the Bose-Hubbard model with T_3 structure, the "dice lattice". Even in the absence of any frustration the superfluid phase is characterized by modulation of the order parameter on the different sublattices of the T_3 structure. The zero-temperature critical point as a function of a magnetic field shows the characteristic "butterfly" form. At fully frustration the superfluid region is strongly suppressed. In addition, due to the existence of the Aharonov-Bohm cages at f=1/2,…
Motivated by the recent prediction that uniaxially compressed aerogel can stabilize the anisotropic A phase over the isotropic B phase, we measure the pressure dependent superfluid fraction of 3He entrained in 10% axially compressed, 98% porous aerogel. We observe that a broad region of the temperature-pressure phase diagram is occupied by the metastable A phase. The reappearance of the A phase on warming from the B phase, before superfluidity is extinguished at Tc, is in contrast to its absence in uncompressed aerogel. The phase diagram is modified from that of pure 3He, with the disappearanc…
