We develop a low-energy model of a unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state. Because the underlying rotational and translational symmetries are broken spontaneously, this gapless superfluid is a smectic liquid crystal, that exhibits fluctuations that are qualitatively stronger than in a conventional superfluid, thus requiring a fully nonlinear description of its Goldstone modes. Consequently, at nonzero temperature the LO superfluid is an algebraic phase even in 3d. It exhibits half-integer vortex-dislocation defects, whose unbinding leads to transitions to a superfluid nematic and other phases. In 2d at nonzero temperature, the LO state is always unstable to a charge-4 nematic superfluid. We expect this superfluid liquid-crystal phenomenology to be realizable in imbalanced resonant Fermi gases trapped isotropically.
We show that the behaviour of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superconductors near a surface is considerably different from the usual case. The order parameter of the FF state is strongly deformed near the surface, which leads to a number of unusual features in the linear magnetic response, such as "anti-screening" or "over-screening" of the applied field. In a fully isotropic FF case, the Meissner effect is still present, despite the vanishing of the transverse superfluid density in the bulk. We also calculate the surface critical field Hc3, which exhibits a peculiar temperature d…
We theoretically study the orbital destructive effect against superconductivity in a parallel magnetic field in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO or LOFF) phase at zero temperature in a quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) conductor. We demonstrate that at zero temperature a special parameter, $λ= l_{\perp}(H)/d$, is responsible for strength of the orbital effect, where $l_{\perp}(H)$ is a typical "size" of the quasi-classical electron orbit in a magnetic field and $d$ is the inter-plane distance. We discuss applications of our results to the existing experiments on the FFLO phase in the organ…
We study exotic superconducting states in SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures on the basis of the three-orbital model, which reproduces the band structure of two-dimensional electron gases. We show various Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states induced by the broken inversion symmetry and orbital degree of freedom. In particular, a novel orbital-dependent FFLO state is stabilized in a magnetic field along the [110]-axis. The field angle dependence of the FFLO state is clarified on the basis of the spin and orbital texture in the momentum space. It is shown that the orbital degree of freedom in …
We study the effect of a parallel magnetic field in a thin and small superconductor. The field suppresses superconductivity through Zeeman coupling while stabilizes the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state at high fields before superconductivity is destroyed. When the spatial period of FFLO state is comparable to the size of the superconductor, there is a strong commensuration effect, which modifies the superconducting phase diagram. We investigate the FFLO state and the phase diagram in the presence of strong commensuration effect both for the $s$-wave and $d$-wave superconductors us…
We have investigated the magnetic phase diagram near the upper critical field of KFe2As2 by magnetic torque and specific heat experiments, using a high-resolution piezo-rotary positioner to precisely control the parallel orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the FeAs layers. We observe a clear double transition when the field is oriented strictly in-plane, and a characteristic upturn of the upper critical field line well beyond the Pauli limit at 4.7 T. This provides firm evidence that an FFLO state is realized in this iron-based KFe2As2 superconductor.
Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Inhomogeneous Superconducting State and Phase Transitions Induced by Spin Accumulation in a Ferromagnet-$ d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-Wave Superconductor-Ferromagnet Tunnel Junction
We present magnetic torque, specific heat and thermal expansion measurements combined with a piezo rotary positioner of the bulk transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor NbS2 in high magnetic fields applied strictly parallel to its layer structure. The upper critical field of superconducting TMDs in the 2D form is known to be dramatically enhanced by a special form of Ising spin orbit coupling. This Ising superconductivity is very robust against the Pauli limit for superconductivity. We find that superconductivity beyond the Pauli limit still exists in bulk single crystals of NbS2.…
Resolving the high-field superconducting phase (HFSP), often called as the Q-phase, and the antiferromagnetic or spin-density-wave (SDW) order appearing in the phase remains a crucial issue on the superconductor CeCoIn$_5$. It is shown that a switching of the SDW domain due to a tiny change of the magnetic field direction in HFSP, reported and interpreted as an evidence of the presence of a $π$-triplet pairing inducing the SDW order [S. Gerber et al., Nature Physics 10, 126 (2014)], can be explained with no triplet pairing component if the $d$-wave superconducting order in HFSP includes the Fu…
We compare the upper critical field of bulk single-crystalline samples of the two intrinsic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductors, 2H-NbSe2 and 2H-NbS2, in high magnetic fields where their layer structure is aligned strictly parallel and perpendicular to the field, using magnetic torque experiments and a high-precision piezo-rotary positioner. While both superconductors show that orbital effects still have a significant impact when the layer structure is aligned parallel to the field, the upper critical field of NbS2 rises above the Pauli limiting field and forms a Fulde-Ferrel…
Magnetic-Torque Evidence for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State for In-Plane Magnetic Fields in the Organic Superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2
The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in quasi-one-dimensional systems with warped Fermi surfaces is examined in strong parallel magnetic fields. It is shown that the state is extremely stable for field directions around nontrivial optimum directions, at which the upper critical field exhibits cusps, and that the stabilization is due to a Fermi-surface effect analogous to the nesting effect for the spin density wave and charge density wave. Interestingly, the behavior with cusps is analogous to that in a square lattice system in which the hole density is controlled. For the organic…
We theoretically study bilayer superconducting topological insulator film, in which superconductivity exists for both top and bottom surface states. We show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive the system into Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase, where electrons are paired with finite momenta. The LO phase is topologically non-trivial and characterized by a Z 2 topological invariant, leading to a Majorana zero mode chain along the edge perpendicular to in-plane magnetic fields.
We theoretically investigate the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state by using the microscopic quasi-classical Eilenberger equation. The Pauli paramagnetic effects and the orbital depairing effects due to vortices are treated in an equal footing for three dimensional spherical Fermi surface model and $s$-wave pairing. The field evolution of the LO state is studied in detail, such as the $H$-$T$ phase diagram, spatial structures of the order parameter, the paramagnetic moment, and the internal filed. Field-dependences of various thermodynamic quantities: the paramagnetic moment, entrop…
