The pairing symmetry of the hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs is discussed with taking into account its multiband structure. The topological chiral $d$-wave state with time-reversal-symmetry breaking has been anticipated from the spontaneous magnetization observed by the muon-spin-relaxation experiment. We point out in this paper that the recent experimental reports on the nuclear-spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ and superfluid density $n_s(T)$, which seemingly support the conventional $s$-wave pairing, are also consistent with the chiral $d$-wave state. The compatibility of the gap and multiband structures is crucial in this argument. We propose that the measurement of the bulk quasiparticle density of states would be useful for the distinction between two pairing states.

We report superconductivity in the honeycomb-lattice pnictide SrPtAs with Tc = 2.4 K. To our knowledge, SrPtAs is the first superconducting pnictide with a honeycomb lattice structure. Our finding opens up new playground to develop pnictide superconductors with honeycomb lattices, in addition to square lattices known in iron-based superconductors.
Unlike other pnictides, SrPtAs has a hexagonal structure, containing layers with As-Pt atoms that form a honeycomb lattice. These layers lack inversion symmetry which allows for a spin-orbit coupling that we show has a dramatic effect on superconductivity in this material. In particular, for conventional s-wave superconductivity in SrPtAs, both the spin susceptibility and the paramagnetic limiting field are enhanced significantly with respect to that usually expected for s-wave superconductors. SrPtAs provides a prime example of a superconductor with locally broken inversion symmetry.
We report full-potential density functional theory (DFT)-based {\it ab initio} band structure calculations to investigate electronic structure properties of the first pnictide superconductor with a honeycomb-lattice structure: SrPtAs. As a result, electronic bands, density of states, Fermi velocities and the topology of the Fermi surface for SrPtAs are obtained. These quantities are discussed in comparison to the first available experimental data. Predictions for future measurements are provided.
The pnictide superconductor SrPtAs has a hexagonal layered structure containing inversion symmetry. It is formed by stacking two inequivalent PtAs layers separated by Sr layers. The former have no local (in-plane) inversion symmetry and therefore a (layer-) staggered Rashba spin orbit coupling appears which splits the three Kramers degenerate bands into six quasi-2D bands. The symmetry of the superconducting state of SrPtAs is unknown. Three candidates, spin-singlet $A_{1g}$ and $E_g$ as well as triplet $A_{2u}$ states have been proposed. We predict the quasiparticle interference (QPI) spectru…
The hexagonal superconductor SrPtAs exhibits time-reversal-symmetry breaking below $T_c$, hinting at an unconventional pairing state. Therefore, the symmetry of the underlying crystal is important for the classification of possible gap structures and their mixing. Here, we use the generating point group D$_{6h}$ of SrPtAs for a comprehensive classification of the gap functions and to construct a tight-binding model. Our work clarifies questions of symmetry and topology in this non-symmorphic material and allows for better comparison with other hexagonal systems.
We present a magnetic-penetration-depth study on polycrystalline and granular samples of SrPtAs, a pnictide superconductor with a hexagonal structure containing PtAs layers that individually break inversion symmetry (local noncentrosymmetry). Compact samples show a clear-cut s-wave-type BCS behavior, which we consider to be the intrinsic penetration depth of SrPtAs. Granular samples display a sample-dependent second diamagnetic drop, attributed to the intergrain coupling. Our experimental results point to a nodeless isotropic superconducting energy gap in SrPtAs, which puts strong constraints …
We discuss possible pairing symmetries in the hexagonal pnictide superconductor SrPtAs. The local lack of inversion symmetry of the two distinct conducting layers in the unit cell results in a special spin-orbit coupling with a staggered structure. We classify the pairing symmetry by the global crystal point group D_3d, and suggest some candidates for the stable state using a tight-binding model with an in-plane, density-density type pairing interaction. We may have some unconventional states like s+f-wave and a mixture of chiral d-wave and chiral p-wave. The spin orbit coupling is larger than…
$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$The locally non-centrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral $d$-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group $P6_{3}$/$mmc$ with lattice parameters $a$ = 4.2445(4) $Å$ and $c$ = 8.9513(18) $Å$. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T$_c$ $\sim$2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline sam…
The effect of spin-orbit coupling on the electronic structure of the layered iron-free pnictide superconductor, SrPtAs, has been studied using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The anisotropy in Fermi velocity, conductivity and plasma frequency stemming from the layered structure are found to be enhanced by spin-orbit coupling. The relationship between spin-orbit interaction and the lack of two-dimensional inversion in the PtAs layers is analyzed within a tight-binding Hamiltonian based on the first-principles calculations. Finally, the band structure suggests that ele…
Recent $μ$SR measurements on SrPtAs revealed time-reversal-symmetry breaking with the onset of superconductivity [Biswas et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 180503(R) (2013)], suggesting an unconventional superconducting state. We investigate this possibility via functional renormalization group and find a chiral $(d+\mathrm{i}d)$-wave order parameter favored by the multiband fermiology and hexagonal symmetry of SrPtAs. This $(d+\mathrm{i}d)$-wave state exhibits significant gap anisotropies as well as gap differences on the different bands, but only has point nodes on one of the bands at the Brillouin zo…
The hexagonal phase SrPtAs (s.g. P6/mmm; #194) with a honeycomb lattice structure very recently was declared as a new low-temperature (TC ~ 4.2K) superconductor. Here by means of first-principles calculations the optimized structural parameters, electronic bands, Fermi surface, total and partial densities of states, inter-atomic bonding picture, independent elastic constants, bulk and shear moduli for SrPtAs were obtained for the first time and analyzed in comparison with the related layered superconductor SrPt2As2.
We investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of the 122 (AM$_2$B$_2$) hexagonal transition-metal pnictides with A=(Sr, Ca), M=(Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and B=(As, P, Sb). It is found that the family of materials share critical similarities with those of tetragonal structures that include the famous iron-based high temperature superconductors. In both families, the next nearest neighbor(NNN) effective antiferromagnetic(AFM) exchange couplings reach the maximum value in the iron-based materials. While the NNN couplings in the latter are known to be responsible for the C-type AFM state and to…
Surface properties are examined in a chiral d-wave superconductor with hexagonal symmetry, whose one-body Hamiltonian possesses the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling identical to the one characterizing the topological nature of the Kane-Mele honeycomb insulator. In the normal state spin-orbit coupling gives rise to spontaneous surface spin currents, whereas in the superconducting state there exist besides the spin currents also charge surface currents, due to the chiral pairing symmetry. Interestingly, the combination of these two currents results in a surface spin polarization, whose spatial depe…
Here we report the discovery of the first ternary molybdenum pnictide based superconductor K2Mo3As3. Polycrystalline samples were synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction method. Electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements exhibit bulk superconductivity with th…
By replacing the alkali element in the newly discovered K2Mo3As3 superconductor, we successfully synthesized ternary molybdenum pnictides Rb2Mo3As3 and Cs2Mo3As3 through solid state reaction method. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis reveals the same quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) hexagonal crystal structure and space group of P-6m2 (No. 187) as K2Mo3As3. The refined lattice parameters are a = 10.432 (1) Å, c = 4.4615 (6) Å for Rb2Mo3As3 and a = 10.7405 (6) Å, c = 4.4654 (5) Å for Cs2Mo3As3. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility characterizations exhibit the occurrence of superconduct…
Understanding the mechanism and symmetry of electron pairing in iron-based superconductors represents an important challenge in condensed matter physics [1-3]. The observation of magnetic flux lines - "vortices" - in a superconductor can contribute to this issue, because the spatial variation of magnetic field reflects the pairing. Unlike many other iron pnictides, our KFe2As2 crystals have very weak vortex pinning, allowing small-angle-neutron-scattering (SANS) observations of the intrinsic vortex lattice (VL). We observe nearly isotropic hexagonal packing of vortices, without VL-symmetry tra…
