The characteristic features of Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)[(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$)$_2$As$_2$]$_5$ ("10-3-8") superconductor are relatively high anisotropy and a clear separation of superconductivity and structural/magnetic transitions, which allows studying the superconducting gap without complications due to the coexisting order parameters. The London penetration depth, measured in underdoped single crystals of 10-3-8 ($x =$ 0.028, 0.041, 0.042, and 0.097), shows behavior remarkably similar to other Fe-based superconductors, exhibiting robust power-law, $Δλ(T) = A T^n$. The exponent $n$ decreases from 2.36 ($x =$ 0.097, close to optimal doping) to 1.7 ($x =$ 0.028, a heavily underdoped composition), suggesting that the superconducting gap becomes more anisotropic at the dome edge. A similar trend is found in low-anisotropy superconductors based on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ ("122"), implying that it is an intrinsic property of superconductivity in iron pnictides, unrelated to the coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity or the anisotropy of the normal state. Overall this doping dependence is consistent with $s_{\pm}$ pairing competing with intra-band repulsion.
Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
The 3D phase diagram of iron pnictides where the critical temperature depends on charge density and microstrain in the active FeAs layers is proposed. The iron pnictides superconductors are shown to be a practical realization of a heterostructure at the atomic limit made of a superlattice of FeAs layers intercalated by spacer layers. We have focussed our interest on the A 1-x BxFe2As2 (122) families and we show that FeAs layers have a tensile microstrain due to the misfit strain between the active layers and the spacers. We have identified the critical range of doping and microstrain where the…
The mechanism of formation of dome-like phase diagrams and the features of magnetic field penetration in iron pnictides with hetero- and isovalent doping are considered within the framework of the previously proposed model, which assumes the local character of doping and the cluster structure of resulted superconducting phase. It is shown that the proposed model, despite its simplicity and neglect of the features of the electronic structure, makes it possible not only to accurately calculate the positions of superconducting domes on the phase diagrams of specific HTSC compounds, but also to ex…
The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structu…
A highly intriguing aspect in iron-pnictide superconductors is the composition-dependent electronic structure, in particular the question if and how charge carriers are introduced to the system upon substitution of Ba by alkali metals or of Fe by other transition metals, TM. We report on a systematic study of spatial structure and electronic states by x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption on a large number of compositions in the (Ba,K)(Fe,TM)2As2 family. The coherent combination of detailed structural information with an in-depth analysis of the electronic structure allows us to sensitively d…
To reveal the relative importance of charge doping and defect scattering in substitutionally modified 122 iron pnictides, we perform a systematic first principles study on selected bands at the Fermi level. Disorder effects are induced by various substitutions using an orbital based coherent potential approximation (CPA). Pronounced level shifts of individual bands suggest that transition metal substitutions introduce mobile charge carriers into the system. However, important deviations from such a rigid band scenario as well as spectral broadenings due to impurity scattering correlate with th…
We study the doping dependence of the spin-density-wave (SDW) state in four models of the 1111 pnictides. The random-phase approximation is used to determine the ordering temperature and the ordering vector as functions of doping, and to evaluate the contribution of the various orbitals to the SDW instability. In addition to the usual assumption of orbitally rotation-invariant interactions, we consider the effect of reduced interactions involving the xy orbital, which are anticipated by crystal-structure considerations. We find that changing the relative strength of the interaction in the xy o…
We have systematically investigated the doping and the directional dependence of the gap structure in the 122-type iron pnictide superconductors by point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The studies were performed on single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.29, 0.49, and 0.77) and SrFe1.74Co0.26As2 with a sharp tip of Pb or Au pressed along the c-axis or the ab-plane direction. The conductance spectra obtained on highly transparent contacts clearly show evidence of a robust superconducting gap. The normalized curves can be well described by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a life…
We investigated the optical spectrum of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystals with various doping levels. It is found that the low-energy optical conductivity spectrum of this system can be decomposed into two components: a sharp Drude term and a broad "incoherent" term. For the compounds showing magnetic order, a gap appears predominantly in the "incoherent" component, while an s-wave like superconducting gap opens in both components for highly doped compounds. The Drude weight steadily increases as doping proceeds, consistent with electron doping in this system. On the other hand, the "incoherent…
The phase diagram of electron-doped pnictides is studied varying the temperature, electronic density, and isotropic quenched disorder strength by means of computational techniques applied to a three-orbital ($xz$, $yz$, $xy$) spin-fermion model with lattice degrees of freedom. In experiments, chemical doping introduces disorder but in theoretical studies the relationship between electronic doping and the randomly located dopants, with their associated quenched disorder, is difficult to address. In this publication, the use of computational techniques allows us to study independently the effect…
Recent experiments on iron pnictides have uncovered a large in-plane resistivity anisotropy with a surprising result: the system conducts better in the antiferromagnetic x direction than in the ferromagnetic y direction. We address this problem by calculating the ratio of the Drude weight along the x and y directions, Dx/Dy, for the mean-field Q=(π,0) magnetic phase diagram of a five-band model for the undoped pnictides. We find that Dx/Dy ranges between 0.3 < D_x/D_y < 1.4 for different interaction parameters. Large values of orbital ordering favor an anisotropy opposite to the one found expe…
We investigate the doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in two-superconducting-dome-system LaFeAsO1-xDx. Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic doping dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron doping. The present results imply that the multi…
The puzzling nature of magnetic and lattice phase transitions of iron pnictides is investigated via a first-principles Wannier function analysis of representative parent compound LaOFeAs. A rare ferro-orbital ordering is found to give rise to the recently observed highly anisotropic magnetic coupling, and drive the phase transitions--without resorting to widely employed frustration or nesting picture. The revealed necessity of the additional orbital physics leads to a correlated electronic structure fundamentally distinct from that of the cuprates. In particular, the strong coupling to the mag…
The concept of an electronically-driven breaking of the rotational symmetry of a crystal, without involving magnetic order, has found experimental support in several systems, from semiconductor heterostructures and ruthenates, to cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors. In the pnictide BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, such an "electronic nematic state" appears above the magnetic transition dome, over a temperature range that can be controlled by external strain. Here, by measuring the in-plane resistivity anisotropy, we probe the electronic anisotropy of this material over the entire nematic/magnetic dom…
We examine the optical conductivity in antiferromagnetic (AFM) iron pnictides by mean-field calculation in a five-band Hubbard model. The calculated spectra are well consistent with the in-plane anisotropy observed in the measurements, where the optical conductivity along the direction with the AFM alignment of neighboring spins is larger than that along the ferromagnetic (FM) direction in the low-energy region; however, that along the FM direction becomes larger in the higher-energy region. The difference between the two directions is explained by taking account of orbital characters in both …
The resistivity anisotropy unveiled in the study of detwinned single crystals of the undoped 122 pnictides is here studied using the two-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model in the mean-field approximation. Calculating the Drude weight in the x and y directions at zero temperature for a Q=(π,0) magnetically ordered state, the conductance along the antiferromagnetic direction is shown to be larger than along the ferromagnetic direction. This effect is caused by the suppression of the d_{yz} orbital at the Fermi surface, but additional insight based on the momentum dependence of the transitio…
The wave-vector (q) and doping dependences of the magnetic energy, iron moment, and effective exchange interactions in LaFeAsO, BaFe2As2, and SrFe2As2\ are studied by self-consistent LSDA calculations for co-planar spin spirals. For the undoped compounds, the calculated total energy, E(q), reaches its minimum at q corresponding to stripe anti-ferromagnetic order. In LaFeAsO, this minimum becomes flat already at low levels of electron-doping and shifts to an incommensurate q at delta=0.2, where delta is the number of additional electrons (delta>0) or holes (delta<0) per Fe. In BaFe2As2 and SrFe…
The electronic structure of the intercalated iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O (Tc - 21.5 K) has been investigated by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and combined local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory calculations. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by both the Fe 3d and Ti 3d orbitals, indicating that the spacing layers separating different FeAs layers are also metallic. By counting the enclosed volumes of the Fermi surface sheets, we observe a large self-doping effect, i.e. 0.25 electrons per unit cell are transferred from the…
The Ca10(PtnAs8)(Fe2As2)5 (n=3,4) compounds are a new type of iron pnictide superconductors whose structures consist of stacking Ca-PtnAs8-Ca-Fe2As2 layers in a unit cell. When n=3 (the 10-3-8 phase), the undoped compound is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor, while, when n=4 (the 10-4-8 phase), the undoped compound is a superconductor with the transition temperature of 26K. Here we report the results of high-pressure studies on the 10-3-8 compound obtained through a combination of in-situ resistance, magnetic susceptibility, and Hall coefficient measurements. We find that its AFM order …
Motivated by recent experimental findings, we investigate the evolution of the superconducting gap anisotropy in 122 iron pnictides as a function of hole doping. Employing both a functional and a weak coupling renormalization group approach (FRG and WRG), we analyse the Fermi surface instabilities of an effective 122 model band structure at different hole dopings x, and derive the gap anisotropy from the leading superconducting instability. In the transition regime from collinear magnetism to s_{\pm}-wave, where strong correlations are present, we employ FRG to identify a non- monotonous chang…
We develop the formalism for computing the oscillations of the specific heat and thermal transport under rotated magnetic field in multiband superconductors with anisotropic gap and apply it to iron-pnictides. We show that these oscillations change sign at low temperatures and fields, which strongly influences the conclusions about the gap structure based on experiment. We find that recent measurements of the specific heat oscillations indicate that the iron-based superconductors possess an anisotropic gap with deep minima or nodes close to the line connecting electron and hole pockets. We mak…
We obtain and analyze the phase diagram of doped iron-pnictides under the assumption that doping adds non-magnetic impurities to the system but does not change the densities of carriers. We show that the phase diagram is quite similar to the one obtained under the opposite rigid band assumption. In both cases, there is a phase where extended s+- superconductivity and antiferromagnetism co-exist. We evaluate the jump of the specific heat at the superconducting transition across the phase diagram and show that the jump is non-monotonic, with the maximum at the onset of the co-existence phase. Ou…
Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in optimally - doped, $x=$0.35, as-grown ($T_c \approx$25 K, RRR=$ρ(300K)/ρ(T_c)$=4.5) and annealed ($T_c \approx$35 K, RRR=6.4) single crystals of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$ iron - based superconductor. Annealing increases the RRR and decreases the absolute value of the London penetration depth from $λ(0) = 300 \pm 10$ nm in as-grown sample to $λ(0) = 275 \pm 10$ nm. At low temperatures, $λ(T) \sim T$ indicating superconducting gap with line nodes. Analysis of the full - temperature range superfluid density is consisten…
We use the functional renormalization group method to analyze the phase diagram of a 4-band model for the iron-pnictides subject to band interactions with certain A_{1g} momentum dependence. We determine the parameter regimes where an extended s-wave pairing instability with and without nodes emerges. On the electron-doped side, the parameter regime in which a nodal gap appears is found to be much narrower than recently predicted in arXiv:0903.5547. On the hole-doped side, the extended s-wave pairing never becomes nodal: above a critical strength of the intra-band repulsion, the system favors …
Doping dependence of the spin fluctuations and the electron correlations in the effective five-band Hubbard model for iron pnictides is investigated using the fluctuation-exchange approximation. For a moderate hole doping, we find a dominant low-energy spin excitation at Q=(π,0), which becomes critical at low temperature. The low-energy spin excitations in the heavily hole-doped region are characterized by weak Q dependence. The electron doping leads to an appearance of a pseudogap in spin excitation spectrum. Correspondingly, the NMR-1/T1 relaxation rate is strongly enhanced on the hole-doped…
The electronic and magnetic structures in the normal and superconducting states of iron pnictides are investigated by solving self-consistently the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. It is shown that strong electron correlations can induce domain walls, which separate regions with different spin density wave orders. At zero or low electron doping, $90^\circ$ domain walls are formed while anti-phase domain walls are produced at higher electron doping. On the domain walls, larger electron densities are always present. The results agree qualitatively with recent observations of scanning tunneling mic…
The two-orbital Hubbard model for the pnictides is studied numerically using the real-space Hartree-Fock approximation on finite clusters. Upon electron doping, states with a nonuniform distribution of charge are stabilized. The observed patterns correspond to charge stripes oriented perpendicular to the direction of the spin stripes of the undoped magnetic ground state. While these charge striped states are robust when the undoped state has a Hubbard gap, their existence when the intermediate-coupling magnetic metallic state of pnictides is doped was also observed for particular model paramet…
We studied double superconducting (SC) domes in LaFeAsO1-xHx by using 75As- and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, and unexpectedly discovered that a new antiferromagnetic (AF) phase follows the double SC domes on further H doping, forming a symmetric alignment of AF and SC phases in the electronic phase diagram. We demonstrated that the new AF ordering originates from the nesting between electron pockets, unlike the nesting between electron and hole pockets as seen in the majority of undoped pnictides. The new AF ordering is derived from the features common to high-Tc pnictides: howeve…
Recent experiments demonstrated that isovalent doping system gives the similar phase diagram as the heterovalent doped cases. For example, with the phosphorous (P)-doping, the magnetic order in BaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ compound is first suppressed, then the superconductivity dome emerges to an extended doping region but eventually it disappears at large $x$. With the help of a minimal two-orbital model for both BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$P$_{2}$, together with the self-consistent lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation, we calculate the phase diagram against the P content …
We present an ab-initio study of Ru substitution in two different compounds, BaFe2As2 and LaFeAsO, pure and F-doped. Despite the many similarities among them, Ru substitution has very different effects on these compounds. By means of an unfolding technique, which allows us to trace back the electronic states into the primitive cell of the pure compounds, we are able to disentangle the effects brought by the local structural deformations and by the impurity potential to the states at the Fermi level. Our results are compared with available experiments and show: i) satisfying agreement of the ca…
The in-plane anisotropy of the electrical resistivity across the coupled orthorhombic and magnetic transitions of the iron pnictides has been extensively studied in the parent and electron-doped compounds. All these studies universally show that the resistivity $ρ_{a}$ across the long orthorhombic axis $a_{O}$ - along which the spins couple antiferromagnetically below the magnetic transition temperature - is smaller than the resistivity $ρ_{b}$ of the short orthorhombic axis $b_{O}$, i. e. $ρ_{a}<ρ_{b}$. Here we report that in the hole-doped compounds Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, as the …
The wave-vector q and doping (x,y) dependences of the magnetic energy, iron moment, and effective exchange interactions in LaFeAsO{1-x}F{x} and Ba{1-2y}K{2y}Fe2As2 are studied by self-consistent LSDA calculations for co-planar spin spirals. For the undoped compounds (x=0, y=0), the minimum of the calculated total energy, E(q), is for q corresponding to stripe antiferromagnetic order. Already at low levels of electron doping (x), this minimum becomes flat in LaFeAsO{1-x}F{x} and for x>=5, it shifts to an incommensurate q. In Ba{1-2y}K{2y}Fe2As2, stripe order remains stable for hole doping up to…
We apply a Hartree-Fock approximation to a two-orbital model proposed for Fe pnictide superconductors. It is found that the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with the ordering vector Q=(pi,0) is realized. The AFM order appears simultaneously with ferro-orbital order, the latter leads to a secondary lattice distortion. We also investigate the influence of doping on the AFM order. The size of the AFM moment changes continuously for lightly doped cases, but when the amount of doped carriers exceeds a certain value the AFM state is suddenly destroyed. We also show that Fermi surfaces remain and change…
Using realistic multi-orbital tight-binding Hamiltonians and the T-matrix formalism, we explore the effects of a non-magnetic impurity on the local density of states in Fe-based compounds. We show that scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) has very specific anisotropic signatures that track the evolution of orbital splitting (OS) and antiferromagnetic gaps. Both anisotropies exhibit two patterns that split in energy with decreasing temperature, but for OS these two patterns map onto each other under 90 degree rotation. STS experiments that observe these signatures should expose the underlying …
We report systematic Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) experiments using different photon polarizations and experimental geometries and find that the doping evolution of the normal state of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 deviates significantly from the predictions of a rigid band model. The data reveal a non-monotonic dependence upon doping of key quantities such as band filling, bandwidth of the electron pocket, and quasiparticle coherence. Our analysis suggests that the observed phenomenology and the inapplicability of the rigid band model in Co-doped Ba122 are due to electronic correlations, and not t…
We examine the magnetic phase diagram of iron pnictides using a five band model. For the intermediate values of the interaction expected to hold in the iron pnictides, we find a metallic low moment state characterized by antiparallel orbital magnetic moments. The anisotropy of the interorbital hopping amplitudes is the key to understanding this low moment state. This state accounts for the small magnetization measured in undoped iron pnictides and leads to the strong exchange anisotropy found in neutron experiments. Orbital ordering is concomitant with magnetism and produces the large zx orbit…
A series of high quality BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ pnictide superconductors were studied using magnetic relaxation and isothermal magnetic measurements in order to study the second magnetization peak (SMP) and critical current behaviour in Ni-doped 122 family. The temperature dependence of the magnetic relaxation rate suggests a pinning crossover, whereas, it's magnetic field dependence hints a vortex-lattice structural phase-transition. The activation energy ($U$) estimated using the magnetic relaxation data was analyzed in detail for slightly-underdoped, slightly-overdoped and an overdoped sa…
Measurements of the specific heat jump at the onset of superconducting transition in the iron-pnictide compounds revealed strong variation of its magnitude as a function of doping that is peaked near the optimal doping. We show that this behavior is direct manifestation of the coexistence between spin-density-wave and superconducting orders and the peak originates from thermal fluctuations of the spin-density-waves near the end point of the coexistence phase -- a tetracritical point. Thermal fluctuations result in a power-law dependence of the specific heat jump that is stronger than the contr…
We systematically investigated the in-plane resistivity anisotropy of electron-underdoped $EuFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2$ and $BaFe_{2-x}Co_xAs_2$, and hole-underdoped $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$. Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy was found in the former samples, while {\it tiny} in-plane resistivity anisotropy was detected in the latter ones. When it is detected, the anisotropy starts above the structural transition temperature and increases smoothly through it. As the temperature is lowered further, the anisotropy takes a dramatic enhancement through the magnetic transition temperature. We found that the…
Dome-shape superconductivity phase diagram can commonly be observed in cuprate and iron-based systems via tuning parameters such as charge carrier doping, pressure, bond angle, and etc. We report doping electrons from transition-metal elements (TM = Co, Ni) substitution can induce high-Tc superconductivity around 35 K in Ca0.94La0.06Fe2As2, which emerges abruptly before the total suppression of the innate spin-density-wave/anti-ferromagnetism (SDW/AFM) state. Unexpectedly, the onset critical temperature for the high-Tc superconductivity stays constant for a wide range of TM doping. Possible ex…
The recently discovered Fe-based superconductor (FeBS) LaFe2As2 seems to break away from an established pattern that doping FeBS beyond 0.2e/Fe destroys superconductivity. LaFe2As2 has an apparent doping of 0.5e, yet superconducts at 12.1 K. Its Fermi surface bears no visual resemblance with the canonical FeBS Fermiology. It also exhibits two phases, none magnetic and only one superconducting. We show that the difference between them has nonetheless magnetic origin, the one featuring disordered moments, and the other locally nonmagnetic. We find that La there assumes an unusual valence of +2.6…
We report LDA calculated band structure, densities of states and Fermi surfaces for recently discovered Pt-pnictide superconductors APt3P (A=Ca,Sr,La), confirming their multiple band nature. Electronic structure is essentially three dimensional, in contrast to Fe pnictides and chalcogenides. LDA calculated Sommerfeld coefficient agrees rather well with experimental data, leaving little space for very strong coupling superconductivity, suggested by experimental data on specific heat of SrPt3P. Elementary estimates show, that the values of critical temperature can be explained by rather weak or …
We study the global phase diagram of magnetic orders and lattice structure in the Fe-pnictide materials at zero temperature within one unified theory, tuned by both doping and pressure. On the low doping and high pressure side of the phase diagram, there is one single transition, which is described by a $z=2$ mean field theory with very weak run-away flows; on the high doping and low pressure side the transition is expected to split to two transitions, with one O(3) spin density wave transition followed by a z = 3 quantum Ising transition at larger doping. The fluctuation of the strain field f…
Recent measurements of the doping dependence of the London penetration depth λ(x) at low temperatures in clean samples of isovalent BaFe_2[As_(1-x)P_x]_2 at T<<Tc [Hashimoto et al., Science 336, 1554 (2012)] revealed a peak in λ(x) near optimal doping x=0.3. The observation of the peak at T<<Tc, points to the existence of the quantum critical point (QCP) beneath the superconducting dome. We associate such a QCP with the onset of a spin- density-wave order and show that the renormalization of λ(x) by critical magnetic fluctuations, gives rise to the observed feature. We argue that the case of p…
We study the orbital-dependent superconducting pairing in a five-orbital t-J1-J2 model for iron pnictides. Depending on the orbital selectivity of electron correlations and the orbital characters along the Fermi surface, the superconducting gap in an A_{1g} pairing state may exhibit anisotropy. This anisotropy varies with the degree of J1-J2 magnetic frustration. We have also calculated the dynamical spin susceptibility in the superconducting state. The frequency dependence of the susceptibility at the antiferromagnetic wavevector (π,0) shows a resonance, whose width is enhanced by the orbital…
The heterogeneous coexistence of antiferromagnetism (SDW) and superconductivity on a mesoscopic scale was observed in iron-pnictides in many recent experiments. We suggest and discuss the scenario in which the heterogeneity is caused by formation of domain walls inherent to the SDW state of pnictides at a proper doping or under applied pressure. Superconductivity would emerge from the modulated SDW structure. The phenomenon is akin to the FFLO-phase in superconductors.
The doping dependence of spin excitations in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is studied based on a two-orbital model under RPA approximation. The interplay between the spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC) is considered in our calculation. Our results for the spin susceptibility are in good agreement with neutron scattering (NS) experiments in various doping ranges at temperatures (T) above and below the superconducting transition temperature T$_{c}$. For the overdoped sample where one of the two hole pockets around $Γ$ point disappears according to ARPES, we show that the im…
We report the discovery and characterization of a novel 112-type iron pnictide EuFeAs2, with La-doping induced superconductivity in a series of Eu1-xLaxFeAs2. The polycrystalline samples were synthesized through solid state reaction method only within a very narrow temperature window around 1073 K. Small single crystals were also grown from a flux method with the size about 100 um. The crystal structure was identified by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis as a monoclinic structure with space group of P21/m. From resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, we found that the par…
We demonstrate the preparation of large, free standing iron pnictide single crystals with a size up to 20 x 10 x 1 mm3 using solvents in zirconia crucibles under argon atmosphere. Transport and magnetic properties are investigated to study the effect of potassium doping on the structural and superconducting property of the compounds. The spin density wave (SDW) anomaly at Ts ~138 K in BaFe2As2 single crystals from self-flux shifts to Ts ~85 K due to Sn solvent growth. We show direct evidence for an incorporation of Sn on the Fe site. The electrical resistivity data show a sharp superconducting…
We discuss the large gap anisotropy found for the A1g (s-wave) state in RPA spin-fluctuation and functional renormalization group calculations and show how the simple arguments leading to isotropic sign-switched s-wave states in these systems need to be supplemented by a consideration of pair scattering within Fermi surface sheets and between the individual electron sheets as well. In addition, accounting for the orbital makeup of the states on the Fermi surface is found to be crucial.
We investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of the 122 (AM$_2$B$_2$) hexagonal transition-metal pnictides with A=(Sr, Ca), M=(Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and B=(As, P, Sb). It is found that the family of materials share critical similarities with those of tetragonal structures that include the famous iron-based high temperature superconductors. In both families, the next nearest neighbor(NNN) effective antiferromagnetic(AFM) exchange couplings reach the maximum value in the iron-based materials. While the NNN couplings in the latter are known to be responsible for the C-type AFM state and to…
The effect of K, Co and P dopings on the lattice dynamics in the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ system is studied by infrared spectroscopy. We focus on the phonon at $\sim$ 253 cm$^{-1}$, the highest energy in-plane infrared-active Fe-As mode in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our studies show that the Co and P dopings lead to a blue shift of this phonon in frequency, which can be simply interpreted by the change of lattice parameters induced by doping. In sharp contrast, an unusual red shift of the same mode was observed in the K-doped compound, at odds with the above explanation. This anomalous behavior in K-doped BaFe$_2$…
Electrical resistivity under high pressure have been measured on nominally pure SrFe2As2 up to 14 GPa. The resistivity drop appeared with increasing pressure, and we clearly observed zero resistivity. The maximum of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is 38 K. The value is corresponding to the one of optimally doping AFe2As2 (A=Sr, Ba) system with K+ ions at the A2+ site.
We determine the anisotropy of the spin fluctuation induced pairing gap on the Fermi surface of the FeAs based superconductors as function of the exchange and Hund's coupling $J_{H}$. We find that for sufficiently large $J_{H}$, nearly commensurate magnetic fluctuations yield a fully gapped $s^{\pm}$-pairing state with small anisotropy of the gap amplitude on each Fermi surface sheet, but significant variations of the gap amplitude for different sheets of the Fermi surface. In particular, we obtain the large variation of the gap amplitude on different Fermi surface sheets, as seen in ARPES exp…
We study the in-plane anisotropy of the thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity on detwinned single crystals of isovalent substituted EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_2$. Compared to the resistivity anisotropy the thermopower anisotropy is more pronounced and clearly visible already at temperatures much above the structural and magnetic phase transitions. Most remarkably, the thermopower anisotropy changes sign below the structural transition. This is associated with the interplay of two contributions due to anisotropic scattering and orbital polarization, which dominate at high- and low…
X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies are jointly used as fast probes to determine the evolution as a function of doping of the fluctuating local magnetic moments in K- and Cr- hole-doped BaFe2As2. An increase in the local moment with hole-doping is found, supporting the theoretical scenario in which a Mott insulating state that would be realized for half-filled conduction bands has an influence throughout the phase diagram of these iron-pnictides.
An extensive calorimetric study of the normal- and superconducting-state properties of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 is presented for 0 < x < 0.2. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases (decreases) with Co doping for x < 0.06 (x > 0.06), which illustrates the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity to monopolize the Fermi surface in the underdoped region and the filling of the hole bands for overdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. All superconducting samples exhibit a residual electronic density of states of unknown origin in the zero-temperature limit, which is minimal at optimal doping …
We use point contact spectroscopy to probe $\rm{AEFe_2As_2}$ ($\rm{AE=Ca, Sr, Ba}$) and $\rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$. For $\rm{AE=Sr, Ba}$ we detect orbital fluctuations above $T_S$ while for AE=Ca these fluctuations start below $T_S$. Co doping preserves the orbital fluctuations while K doping suppresses it. The fluctuations are only seen at those dopings and temperatures where an in-plane resistive anisotropy is known to exist. We predict an in-plane resistive anisotropy of $\rm{Fe_{1+y}Te}$ above $T_S$. Our data are examined in light of the recent work by W.-C. Lee and P. Phillips (arXiv:1110.5917v2).…
We consider the role of potential scatterers in the nematic phase of Fe-based superconductors above the transition temperature to the (pi,0) magnetic state but below the orthorhombic structural transition. The anisotropic spin fluctuations in this region can be frozen by disorder, to create elongated magnetic droplets whose anisotropy grows as the magnetic transition is approached. Such states act as strong anisotropic defect potentials which scatter with much higher probability perpendicular to their length than parallel, although the actual crystal symmetry breaking is tiny. We calculate the…
