The dynamics of charge particles described by Gaussian wave packet in monolayer graphene is studied analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the shape of wave packet at arbitrary time depends on correlation between the initial electron amplitudes $ψ_1(\vec r,0)$ and $ψ_2(\vec r,0)$ on the sublattices $A$ and $B$ correspondingly (i.e. pseudospin polarization). For the transverse pseudospin polarization the motion of the center of wave packet occurs in the direction perpendicular to the average momentum $ {\vec p_0}=\hbar \vec{k_0}$. Moreover, in this case the initial wave packet splits into two parts moving with opposite velocities along $ {\vec p_0}$. If the initial direction of pseudospin coincides with average momentum the splitting is absent and the center of wave packet is displaced at $t>0$ along the same direction. The results of our calculations show that all types of motion experience {\it zitterbewegung}. Besides, depending on initial polarization the velocity of the packet center may have the constant component $v_c=uf(a)$, where $u\approx 10^8 cm/s$ is the Fermi velocity and $f(a)$ is a function of the parameter $a=k_0d$ ($d$ is the initial width of wave packet). As a result, the direction of the packet motion is determined not only by the orientation of the average momentum, but mainly by the phase difference between the up- and low- components of the wave functions. Similar peculiarities of the dynamics of 2D electron wave packet connected with initial spin polarization should take place in the semiconductor quantum well under the influence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
We consider the Zitterbewegung of Dirac electrons in the monolayer graphene as the nonrelativistic analog of the phenomenon predicted by E. Schrödinger for the relativistic electrons in the free space. So we show that the Dirac electrons of monolayer graphene oscillate, i.e. produce fast fluctuation of an electron position around the mean value with rather high frequency but much less than the relativistic electrons in the free space. We also study relation between the Zitterbewegung of the conductivity electrons wave packet formed by the Fermi-Dirac distribution and the high-frequency complex…
The precise value of the $g$-factor in graphene is of fundamental interest for all spin-related properties and their application. We investigate monolayer graphene on a Si/SiO2 substrate by resistively detected electron spin resonance (ESR). Surprisingly, the magnetic moment and corresponding g-factor of 1.952+/-0.002 is insensitive to charge carrier type, concentration, and mobility.
Creation of high quality p-n junctions in graphene monolayer is vital in studying many exotic phenomena of massless Dirac fermions. However, even with the fast progress of graphene technology for more than ten years, it remains conspicuously difficult to generate nanoscale and atomically-sharp p-n junctions in graphene. Here, we employ monolayer-vacancy-island engineering of Cu surface to realize nanoscale p-n junctions with atomically-sharp boundaries in graphene monolayer. The variation of graphene-Cu separations around the edges of the Cu monolayer-vacancy-island affects the positions of th…
We present a study of quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene obtained by intercalation of Au atoms at the interface between the carbon buffer layer (Bu-L) and the silicon-terminated face (0001) of 4H-silicon carbide. Au intercalation is achieved by deposition of atomically thin Au on the Bu-L followed by annealing at 850 °C in an Argon atmosphere. We explore the intercalation of Au and decoupling of the Bu-L into quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene by surface science characterizations and electron transport in top-gated electronic devices. By gate-dependent magnetotransport we find that the…
The novel carbon allotrope with particular and unique 2D arrangement of carbon atoms similar to a Cairo pentagonal tiling, with interplay of $sp^{3}$ and $sp^{2}$ hybridized carbon atoms is called of Penta-graphene (PG). Previous theoretical investigations have shown that PG monolayer is mechanically and thermodynamically stable, possessing also a large band gap of $3.25eV$. This new carbon allotrope with unique carbon atom arrangement in a network (non-coplanar pentagons) is the focus of the theoretical investigations in this work. Using the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations with…
Light emission in atomically thin heterostructures is known to depend on the type of materials, number and stacking sequence of the constituent layers. Here we show that the thickness of a two-dimensional substrate can be crucial in modulating the light emission. We study the layer-dependent charge transfer in vertical heterostructures built from monolayer tungsten disulphide (WS2) on one- and two-layer epitaxial graphene, unravelling the effect that the interlayer electronic coupling has on the excitonic properties of such heterostructures. We bring evidence that the excitonic properties of W…
In a pristine monolayer graphene subjected to a constant electric field along the layer, the Bloch oscillation of an electron is studied in a simple and efficient way. By using the electronic dispersion relation, the formula of a semi-classical velocity is derived analytically, and then many aspects of Bloch oscillation, such as its frequency, amplitude, as well as the direction of the oscillation, are investigated. It is interesting to find that the electric field affects the component of motion, which is non-collinear with electric field, and leads the particle to be accelerated or oscillate…
With considering the great success of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies of graphene in the past few years, it is quite surprising to notice that there is still a fundamental contradiction about the reported tunnelling spectra of quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Many groups observed V-shape spectra with linearly vanishing density-of-state (DOS) at the Dirac point, whereas, the others reported spectra with a gap of 60 meV pinned to the Fermi level in the quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Here we systematically studied the two contradicted tunnelling spectra of the quasi-f…
High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids is an emerging method to probe ultrafast electron dynamics in solids at attosecond timescale. In this work, we study HHG from monolayer and bilayer graphene. Bilayer graphenes with AA and AB stacking are considered in this work. It is found that the monolayer and bilayer graphenes exhibit significantly different harmonic spectra. The difference in the spectra is attributed to the interlayer coupling between the two layers. Also, the intraband and interband contributions to the total harmonic spectrum play a significant role. Moreover, interesting polari…
This work investigates the electronic properties of the energy spectrum of a hybrid system composed of (i) a circular quantum dot of monolayer graphene surrounded by an infinite sheet of AA-stacked bilayer graphene and (ii) a circular quantum dot of AA-stacked graphene bilayer surrounded by infinite monolayer graphene. We establish analytical findings for the related energy levels and wave functions using the continuum model and the zigzag boundary conditions at the graphene monolayer-bilayer interface. We investigate the effects of perpendicular magnetic, dot radius, and electrical fields on …
We demonstrate strong anisotropic spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in graphene induced by monolayer WS$_2$. Direct comparison between graphene/monolayer WS$_2$ and graphene/bulk WS$_2$ system in magnetotransport measurements reveals that monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) can induce much stronger SOI than bulk. Detailed theoretical analysis of the weak-antilocalization curves gives an estimated spin-orbit energy ($E_{\rm so}$) higher than 10 meV. The symmetry of the induced SOI is also discussed, and the dominant $z$ $\rightarrow$ $-z$ symmetric SOI can only explain the experimental r…
Electrons behave like a classical fluid with a momentum distribution function that varies slowly in space and time when the quantum mechanical carrier-carrier scattering dominates over all other scattering processes. Recent experiments in monolayer and bilayer graphene have reported signatures of such hydrodynamic electron behavior in ultra-clean devices. In this theoretical work, starting from a microscopic treatment of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electron-impurity interactions within the Random Phase Approximation, we demonstrate that monolayer and bilayer graphene both host two d…
We show that monolayer graphene intrinsically hosts higher-order topological corner states, in which electrons are localized topologically at atomic sizes. The emergence of the topological corner states in graphene is due to a nontrivial product of the Zak phases for two independent directions, which can be handily calculated graphically by using the bulk wavefunctions. We give an explicit expression that indicates the existence of topological corner states for various geometric edges and corner angles. We also demonstrate the nontrivial localization nature of the topological corner states in …
