Graphene is one of the stiffest known materials, with a Young's modulus of 1 TPa, making it an ideal candidate for use as a reinforcement in high-performance composites. However, being a one-atom thick crystalline material, graphene poses several fundamental questions: (1) can decades of research on carbon-based composites be applied to such an ultimately-thin crystalline material? (2) is continuum mechanics used traditionally with composites still valid at the atomic level? (3) how does the matrix interact with the graphene crystals and what kind of theoretical description is appropriate? We have demonstrated unambiguously that stress transfer takes place from the polymer matrix to monolayer graphene, showing that the graphene acts as a reinforcing phase. We have also modeled the behavior using shear-lag theory, showing that graphene monolayer nanocomposites can be analyzed using continuum mechanics. Additionally, we have been able to monitor stress transfer efficiency and breakdown of the graphene/polymer interface.
Polymer-based nanocomposite dielectrics are expected to become essential in future generations of high voltage electrical insulation. However, the physics behind their performance is not yet understood. Here we investigate electronic properties of the interfacial area in magnesium oxide-polyethylene nanocomposite. We use density functional theory to calculate densities of states for MgO (100) and hydroxylated MgO (111) interfaces with polyethylene. We evaluate the role of silicon-based nanoparticle surface modification at the electronic level and propose a new theory for charge trapping in nan…
Understanding the stress transfer mechanisms from a polymer matrix to two-dimensional reinforcements is essential for the preparation of high performance nanocomposites. In this study, the interfacial stress transfer from a flexible polymer substrate to monolayer and few-layer molybdenum disulfide MoS2 under tension has been investigated. Layer-dependent and strain-dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy were used to examine the stress transfer efficiency.
The microstructure of a Cu/V nanocomposite wire processed by cold drawing was investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. The experimental data clearly reveal some deformation induced interfacial mixing where the vanadium filaments are nanoscaled. The mixed layer is a 2nm wide vanadium gradient in the fcc Cu phase. This mechanical mixing leads to the local fragmentation and dissolution of the filaments and to the formation of vanadium super saturated solid solutions in fcc Cu.
Zero field cooled spontaneous exchange bias (SEB) is observed in epitaxial La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO):NiO self-assembled nanocomposite thin films grown on (001) SrTiO3 single crystal substrate by pulsed laser deposition. SEB is displayed by the novel asymmetry in the hysteresis loop of the composite film along with the field cooled conventional exchange bias (CEB) effect. The training effect shows that exchange bias relaxation is disorder mediated. It is revealed from DC magnetization results that such nanocomposite film divulges spin glass like behaviour, which is arising due to competing ferromag…
Combining the electronic structures of two-dimensional monolayers in ultrathin hybrid nanocomposites is expected to display new properties beyond their simplex components. Here, first-principles calculations are performed to study the structural, electronic and optical properties of hybrid graphene and phosphorene nanocomposite. It turns out that weak van der Waals interactions dominate between graphene and phosphorene with their intrinsic electronic properties preserved. Hybrid graphene and phosphorene nanocomposite shows tunable band gaps at graphene's Dirac point and a transition from hole …
We report exchange bias (EB) effect in the Au-Fe3O4 composite nanoparticle system, where one or more Fe3O4 nanoparticles are attached to an Au seed particle forming dimer and cluster morphologies, with the clusters showing much stronger EB in comparison with the dimers. The EB effect develops due to the presence of stress in the Au-Fe3O4 interface which leads to the generation of highly disordered, anisotropic surface spins in the Fe3O4 particle. The EB effect is lost with the removal of the interfacial stress. Our atomistic Monte-Carlo studies are in excellent agreement with the experimental …
We present the effect of oxidative etching in FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids on FLG edges chemistry/morphology addressing also the catalytic activity of TiO$_2$ NPs. According to the XPS and TGA analysis the oxidation degree strongly depends on TiO$_2$:FLG ratio. The preparation of two series of FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids via sol-gel method and in-situ oxidation permitted to correctly describe and distinguish the chemical composition, core shift and charge distribution in C1s XPS with Tip peak as reference. Such analysis is challenging in carbon materials due the overlapping of C1s peaks from the sample and adv…
Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive ro…
There has been a massive growth in the study of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) over the past decade, based upon their interesting and unusual electronic, optical and mechanical properties, such as tuneable and strain-dependent bandgaps. Tungsten disulfide (WS2), as a typical example of TMDs, has considerable potential in applications such as strain engineered devices and the next generation multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. However, controlling the strain, or more practically, monitoring the strain in WS2 and the associated micromechanics have not been so well studied. Both phot…
This work explores the application of a new one-dimensional carbon nanomaterial, the diamond nanothread (DNT), as a reinforcement for nanocomposites. Owing to the existence of Stone-Wales transformation defects, the DNT intrinsically possesses irregular surfaces, which is expected to enhance the non-covalent interfacial load transfer. Through a series of in silico pull-out studies of the DNT in polyethylene (PE) matrix, we found that the load transfer between DNT and PE matrix is dominated by the non-covalent interactions, in particular the van der Waals interactions. Although the hydrogenated…
The ring opening polymerization of cyclic butylene terephthalate into poly (butylene terephthalate) (pCBT) in the presence of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is an effective method for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites. The inclusion of RGO nanoflakes dramatically affects the crystallization of pCBT, shifting crystallization peak temperature to higher temperatures and, overall, increasing the crystallization rate. This was due to a super nucleating effect caused by RGO, which is maximized by highly reduced graphene oxide. Furthermore, combined analyses by differential scanning calorimetry…
Understanding process-structure-property relation for elastoplastic behavior of polymer nanocomposites with agglomeration anomalies and gradient interphase percolation
We demonstrate a novel in situ polymerization technique to develop localized polymer coatings on the surface of dispersed pristine graphene sheets. Graphene sheets show great promise as strong, conductive fillers in polymer nanocomposites; however, difficulties in dispersion quality and interfacial strength between filler and matrix have been a persistent problem for graphene-based nanocomposites, particularly for pristine graphene. To address this problem, a physisorbed polymer layer is used to stabilize graphene sheets in solution. To form this protective layer, an organic microenvironment i…
This paper focuses on molecular dynamics (MD) modeling of graphene reinforced cross-linked epoxy (Gr-Ep) nanocomposite. The goal is to study the influence of geometry, and concentration of reinforcing nanographene sheet (NGS) on interfacial properties and elastic constants such as bulk Young's modulus, and shear modulus of Gr-Ep nanocomposites. The most typical cross-linked configuration was obtained in order to use in further simulations. The mechanical properties of this cross-linked structure were determined using MD simulations and the results were verified with those available in literatu…
Although many prototype devices based on two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 have been fabricated and wafer scale growth of 2D MoS2 has been realized, the fundamental nature of 2D MoS2-metal contacts has not been well understood yet. We provide a comprehensive ab initio study of the interfacial properties of a series of monolayer (ML) and bilayer (BL) MoS2-metal contacts (metal = Sc, Ti, Ag, Pt, Ni, and Au). A comparison between the calculated and observed Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) suggests that many-electron effects are strongly suppressed in channel 2D MoS2 due to a charge transfer. The extensiv…
The sensitive dependence of monolayer materials on their environment often gives rise to unexpected properties. It was recently demonstrated that monolayer FeSe on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate exhibits a much higher superconducting critical temperature T$_C$ than the bulk material. Here, we examine the interfacial structure of FeSe / SrTiO$_3$ and the effect of an interfacial Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ layer on the increased T$_C$ using a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory. We find Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ forms its own quasi-two-dimensional layer, bonding to both the …
Interfacial charge separation and recombination at heterojunctions of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are of interest to two dimensional optoelectronic technologies. These processes can involve large changes in parallel momentum vector due to the confinement of electrons and holes to the K-valleys in each layer. Since these high-momentum valleys are usually not aligned across the interface of two TMDC monolayers, how parallel momentum is conserved in the charge separation or recombination process becomes a key question. Here we probe this question using the model system of a…
In this work, we developed an improved shear lag model to investigate the load transfer characteristics of three-phase nanocomposite which is reinforced with microscale fibers augmented with carbon nanotubes on their circumferential surfaces. The shear lag model accounts for (i) radial and axial deformations of different transversely isotropic constituents, (ii) thermomechanical loads on the representative volume element (RVE), and (iii) staggering effect of adjacent RVEs. The results from the current newly developed shear lag model are validated with the finite element simulations and found t…

The interfacial charge transfer from the substrate may influence the electronic structure of the epitaxial van der Waals (vdW) monolayers and thus their further technological applications. For instance, the freestanding Sb monolayer in puckered honeycomb phase (α-antimonene), the structural analog of black phosphorene, was predicted to be a semiconductor, but the epitaxial one behaves as a gapless semimetal when grown on the Td-WTe2 substrate. Here, we demonstrate that interface engineering can be applied to tune the interfacial charge transfer and thus the electron band of epitaxial monolayer…
Since solid-state heat transport in a highly porous nanocomposite strongly depends on the thermal boundary conductance (TBC) between constituent nanomaterials, further suppression of the TBC is important for improving performance of thermal insulators. Here, targeting a nanocomposite fabricated by stamping fumed silica nanoparticles, we perform a wide variety of surface functionalization on fumed silica nanoparticles by silane coupling method and investigate the impact on the thermal conductivity (Km). The Km of the silica nanocomposite is approximately 20 and 9 mW/m/K under atmospheric and va…
Low thermal conductivity of polymers, which is one of the considerable drawbacks of commonly used composite structures, has been the focus of many researchers aiming to achieve high-performance polymer-based nanocomposites through the inclusion of highly thermally conductive fillers inside the polymer matrices. Thus, in the present study, a multiscale scheme using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) and finite element (FE) method is developed to explore the impact of different nano-sized fillers (carbon-nitride and graphene) on the effective thermal conductivity of polyethylene-based nan…
The observation of replica bands by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has ignited interest in the study of electron-phonon coupling at low carrier densities, particularly in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$, where the appearance of replica bands has motivated theoretical work suggesting that the interfacial coupling of electrons in the FeSe layer to optical phonons in the SrTiO$_3$ substrate might contribute to the enhanced superconducting pairing temperature. Alternatively, it has also been recently proposed that such replica bands might instead originate from extrinsic final state losses ass…
The deposition of dielectric materials on graphene is one of the bottlenecks for unlocking the potential of graphene in electronic applications. In this paper we demonstrate the plasma enhanced atomic layer deposition of 10 nm thin high quality Al$_2$O$_3$ on graphene using a monolayer of hBN as protection layer. Raman spectroscopy was performed to analyze possible structural changes of the graphene lattice caused by the plasma deposition. The results show that a monolayer of hBN in combination with an optimized deposition process can effectively protect graphene from damage, while significant…
Interface constitutes a significant volume fraction in nanocomposites, and it requires the ability to tune and tailor interfaces to tap the full potential of nanocomposites. However, the development and optimization of nanocomposites is currently restricted by the limited exploration and utilization of interfaces at different length scales. In this research, we have designed and introduced a relatively large-scale vertical interphase into carbon nanocomposites, in which the dielectric response and dispersion features in microwave frequency range are successfully adjusted. A remarkable relaxati…
The resistance to failure through tearing is a crucial mechanical property for the application of different elastomers. In this work, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were introduced into a fluoroelastomer (FKM) matrix with the aim of improving its tear resistance. The fracture energy through tearing was evaluated using the pure shear test. It was found that the tearing energy increased linearly with the volume fraction of the GNPs. At the maximum GNP content, the tearing resistance was 3 times higher, suggesting efficient toughening from the GNPs. Theoretical analysis of the micromechanics was c…
Graphene monolayers supported on oxide substrates have been demonstrated with superior charge mobility and thermal transport for potential device applications. Morphological corrugation can strongly influence the transport properties of the supported graphene. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the morphological stability of a graphene monolayer on an oxide substrate, subject to van der Waals interactions and in-plane mismatch strains. First, we define the equilibrium separation and the interfacial adhesion energy as the two key parameters that characterize the van der Waals interaction b…

The evolution of the atomic structure of LaAlO3 grown on SrTiO3 was investigated using surface x-ray diffraction in conjunction with model-independent, phase-retrieval algorithms between two and five monolayers film thickness. A depolarizing buckling is observed between cation and oxygen positions in response to the electric field of polar LaAlO3, which decreases with increasing film thickness. We explain this in terms of competition between elastic strain energy, electrostatic energy, and electronic reconstructions. The findings are qualitatively reproduced by density-functional theory calcul…
Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) semimetal with high mobility in charge carriers due to the existence of Dirac points. Silicene is another promising material, with properties analog to graphene. Many silicon (Si) based electronic devices can be integrated via graphene-silicene (Gra/si) hybrid structures. These electronic applications are mostly based on the ability to tune the bandgap via electronic structure deformation that is expected to be achieved by multilayer stacking, applying a transverse external electric field (EF), and altering interfacial distance. In this work, we investigate t…
Integration of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdWs) materials with non-2D materials to realize mixed-dimensional heterostructures has potential for creating functional devices beyond the reach of existing materials and has long been a pursuit of the material science community. Here we report the patterning of monolayer/bilayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanostructures with nanometer-precision, tunable sizes and sites at interfaces of graphene/TMD heterostructures. Our experiments demonstrate that the TMD nanostructures can be created at selected positions of the interface using…
We have investigated the coupling of lattice with spin via strain interactions in the CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite system. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies illustrate a remarkable modification in CoFe2O4lattice across Curie temperature (450 K) of PMN-PT. Subsequently, CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite reveals a sudden drop in magnetic moment across Tc of PMN-PT (450 K). However, theindependent CoFe2O4phasedisplaystypical ferromagnetic behaviour across this temperature. These findings establish spin-lattice coupling owing to th interfacial strain transfer between CoFe2O4 and PMN-PT in compos…
Intercalation is an established technique for tailoring the electronic structure of epitaxial graphene. Moreover, it enables the synthesis of otherwise unstable two-dimensional (2D) layers of elements with unique physical properties compared to their bulk versions due to interfacial quantum confinement. In this work, we present uniformly Pb-intercalated quasi-freestanding monolayer graphene on SiC, which turns out to be essentially charge neutral with an unprecedented $p$-type carrier density of only $(5.5\pm2.5)\times10^9$ cm$^{-2}$. Probing the low-energy electronic structure throughout the …
In this work, we demonstrate that edge-oxidation of graphene can enable larger enhancement in thermal conductivity (k) of graphene-nanoplatelet (GnP)/polyetherimide (PEI) composites relative to oxidation of the basal plane of graphene. Edge oxidation (EGO) offers the advantage of leaving the basal plane of graphene intact, preserving its high in-plane thermal conductivity (kin > 2000 Wm-1K-1), while, simultaneously, the oxygen groups introduced on graphene edge enhance interfacial thermal conductance through hydrogen bonding with oxygen groups of polyetherimide (PEI), enhancing overall polymer…
Large scale, homogeneous quasi-free standing monolayer graphene is obtained on cubic silicon carbide, i.e. the 3C-SiC(111) surface, which represents an appealing and cost effective platform for graphene growth. The quasi-free monolayer is produced by intercalation of hydrogen under the interfacial, (6root3x6root3)R30-reconstructed carbon layer. After intercalation, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveals sharp linear pi-bands. The decoupling of graphene from the substrate is identified by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Atomi…
Monolayer epitaxial graphene is an appropriate candidate for a wide variety of electronic and optical applications. One advantage of growing graphene on the Si face of SiC is that it develops as a single crystal, as does the layer underneath, commonly referred to as the interfacial buffer layer. The properties of this supporting layer include a band gap, making it of interest to groups seeking to build devices with on-off capabilities. In this work, using density functional theory, we have calculated the bonding characteristics of the buffer layer to the SiC substrate beneath. These calculatio…
Interfacial adhesion between graphene and a SiO2 substrate is studied by density functional theory (DFT) with dispersion corrections. The results demonstrate the van der Waals (vdW) interaction as the predominate mechanism for the graphene/SiO2 interface. It is found that the interaction strength is strongly influenced by changes of the SiO2 surface structures due to surface reactions with water. The adhesion energy is reduced when the reconstructed SiO2 surface is hydroxylated, and further reduced when covered by a monolayer of adsorbed water molecules. Thus, the effect of humidity may help e…
Recently, monolayer CoSb/SrTiO$_3$ has been proposed as a candidate harboring interfacial superconductivity in analogy with monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$. Experimentally, while the CoSb-based compounds manifesting as nanowires and thin films have been realized on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, serving as a rich playground, their electronic structures are still unknown and yet to be resolved. Here, we have fabricated CoSb$_{1-x}$ nanoribbons with quasi-one-dimensional stripes on SrTiO$_3$(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy, and investigated the electronic structure by in situ angle-resolved photoem…

The energetics and kinetics of monovacancies and divacancies in monolayer GPBN heterostructures were examined using first-principle calculations. The interfaces were shown to be preferential locations for vacancy segregation. Meanwhile the kinetics of vacancies was found to b…

Here we have achieved facile fabrication of MoS2 thin films on CdS nanowires by cation exchange in solution at room temperature and importantly observed their extraordinary magnetic properties. We establish the atomic structure of the MoS2/CdS heterostructure by taking atomic images of the MoS2/CdS interface as well as performing first-principles density functional geomet…
