The evolution of the atomic structure of LaAlO3 grown on SrTiO3 was investigated using surface x-ray diffraction in conjunction with model-independent, phase-retrieval algorithms between two and five monolayers film thickness. A depolarizing buckling is observed between cation and oxygen positions in response to the electric field of polar LaAlO3, which decreases with increasing film thickness. We explain this in terms of competition between elastic strain energy, electrostatic energy, and electronic reconstructions. The findings are qualitatively reproduced by density-functional theory calculations. Significant cationic intermixing across the interface extends approximately three monolayers for all film thicknesses. The interfaces of films thinner than four monolayers therefore extend to the surface, which might affect conductivity.
By adjusting the interface energy, curvature, and velocity, the anisotropy plays an important role in the interaction between interfacial processes and transport processes, determining the solidification structures. In this paper, through the quantitative phase-field model, the influence of anisotropy on the evolution of interfacial morphologies in directional solidification is investigated. To represent different interfacial anisotropies, the solidification processes with different preferred crystallographic orientations are performed. Then the effect of anisotropy on morphological evolution …
Artificially fabricated 3$d$/5$d$ superlattices (SLs) involve both strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in one material by means of interfacial 3$d$-5$d$ coupling, whose mechanism remains mostly unexplored. In this work we investigated the mechanism of interfacial coupling in LaMnO$_3$/SrIrO$_3$ SLs by several spectroscopic approaches. Hard x-ray absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and photoemission spectra evidence the systematic change of the Ir ferromagnetism and the electronic structure with the change of the SL repetition period. First-principles calculations further re…
To investigate the structural changes upon thermal treatment of resorcinol formaldehyde latex (RFL) interfacial layer in rubber-cord flexible composite, a multiscale approach has been employed. High-resolution AFM mapping showed a significant increase of the modulus of the RF phase from 1.2 GPa to 2.3 GPa and latex phase (L) from 0.3 GPa to 0.8 GPa after a thermal exposure at 100°C for 10 days. The increase of the RF and L phases elastic modulus was correlated with the increase of the oxygen content in RFL layer based on the measurements by SEM-EDX. Besides by combining finite element simulati…
We use three-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics simulations (DDD) to study the evolution of interfacial dislocation network (IDN) in particle-strengthened alloy systems subjected to constant stress at high temperatures. We have modified the dislocation mobility laws to incorporate the recovery of the dislocation network by the climb. The microstructure consists of uniformly distributed cuboidal inclusions embedded in the simulation box. Based on the systematic simulations of IDN formation as a function of applied stress for prescribed inter-particle spacing and glide-to-climb mobility r…
We present the effect of oxidative etching in FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids on FLG edges chemistry/morphology addressing also the catalytic activity of TiO$_2$ NPs. According to the XPS and TGA analysis the oxidation degree strongly depends on TiO$_2$:FLG ratio. The preparation of two series of FLG/TiO$_2$ hybrids via sol-gel method and in-situ oxidation permitted to correctly describe and distinguish the chemical composition, core shift and charge distribution in C1s XPS with Tip peak as reference. Such analysis is challenging in carbon materials due the overlapping of C1s peaks from the sample and adv…
The interfacial structure plays a critical role in modern optoelectronics. Currently multilayer electrodes are used to optimize the injection and lifetime properties. The choice of interlayer is not universal, with different effects for the same material with different capping metals. Using a novel in-situ characterization method with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the organic/inorganic interface in OLEDs was examined for two common cathode metals with a LiF interlayer. The impact of the interfacial layer on the performance of devices can be attributed to the bulk lattice matching of the in…
A diffuse-interface model for predicting the evolution of metallic negative electrodes and interfacial voids in solid-state batteries with homogeneous and polycrystalline solid electrolyte separators
In this work, we integrate different computational tools based on multi-phase-field simulations to account for the evolution of morphologies and crystallographic defects of Cu/Sn/Cu sandwich interconnect structures that are widely used in three dimensional integrated circuits (3DICs). Specifically, this work accounts for diffusion-driven formation and disappearance of multiple intermetallic phases during accelerated electromigration and takes into account the non-equilibrium formation of vacancies due to electromigration. The work compares nucleation, growth, and coalescence of intermetallic l…
Anisotropy of interfacial energy is the principal driving force for material microstructure evolution yet its origins remain uncertain and a quantitative description lacking. We present and justify a concise hypothesis on the topography and topology of the functional space of grain boundary energies and, based on this hypothesis, construct a closed-form function that quantitatively describes energy variations in the entire 5-space of macroscopic parameters defining grain boundary geometry. The new function is found to be universal for the crystallography class of face-centered cubic metals.
Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to obtain the three-dimensional distribution of interfacial mixing and cascade defects in Ti/Pt multilayer system due to single 1 keV $Ar^+$ impacts at grazing angle of incidence. The Ti/Pt system was chosen because of its relatively high heat of mixing in the binary alloy and therefore a suitable candidate for testing the effect of heat of mixing on ion-beam mixing. However, the calculated mixing profile is not sensitive to the heat of mixing. Therefore the thermal spike model of mixing is not fully supported under these irradiation conditions. In…
Transition metal oxide hetero-structure has great potential for multifunctional devices. However, the degraded physical properties at interface, known as dead-layer behavior, present a main obstacle for device applications. Here we present the systematic study of the dead-layer behavior in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 thin film grown on SrTiO3 substrate with ozone assisted molecular beam epitaxy. We found that the evolution of electric and magnetic properties as a function of thickness shows a remarkable resemblance to the phase diagram as a function of doping for bulk materials, providing compelling evid…
In recent years, interfacial fracture becomes one of the most important problems in the assessment of reliability of electronics packaging. Especially, underfill resin is used with solder joints in flip chip packaging for preventing the thermal fatigue fracture in solder joints. In general, the interfacial strength has been evaluated on the basis of interfacial fracture mechanics concept. However, as the size of devices decrease, it is difficult to evaluate the interfacial strength quantitatively. Most of researches in the interfacial fracture were conducted on the basis of the assumption of t…
Charge transport processes at interfaces which are governed by complex interfacial electronic structure play a crucial role in catalytic reactions, energy storage, photovoltaics, and many biological processes. Here, the first soft X-ray second harmonic generation (SXR-SHG) interfacial spectrum of a buried interface (boron/Parylene-N) is reported. SXR-SHG shows distinct spectral features that are not observed in X-ray absorption spectra, demonstrating its extraordinary interfacial sensitivity. Comparison to electronic structure calculations indicates a boron-organic separation distance of 1.9 Å…
We investigate thickness series of films of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl in order to study the effect of annealing on the interface with a MgO layer and on the bulk magnetic properties. Our results reveal that while the perpendicular interface anisotropy constant $K^{\perp}_{\rm S}$ is zero for the as-deposited samples, its value increases with annealing up to a value of $1.14\, \pm \,0.07$~mJ/m$^2$ for the series annealed at 320$^{\rm o}$C and of $2.07\, \pm \,0.7$~mJ/m$^2$ for the 450$^{\rm o}$C annealed series owing to a strong modification of the interface during the thermal treatment. Thi…
Previous researches only reported very small interfacial thermal resistances at room temperature due to limitations in sample combinations and methods. Taking cognizance of the importance of mismatched phonon structures, we report values up to $2*10^{-4}W^{-1}m^{2}K$, thousand times larger than highest values reported to date. This enables substantial tuning of the thermal conductivity in composites, and does not constrain other characteristics. Our findings inspire new design strategies, for heat control in integrated circuits and thermoelectric composites, that harness thermal transport at i…
We study the electronic structures of TiO2/Ti4O7 and Ta2O5/TaO2 interfaces using the screened exchange (sX-LDA) functional. Both of these bilayer structures are useful infrastructures for high performance RRAMs. We find that the system Fermi energies of both interfaces are just above the conduction band edge of the corresponding stoichiometric oxides. According to the charge transition levels of the oxygen vacancies in Ta2O5 and TiO2, the oxygen vacancies are stabilized at the -2 charged state. We propose to introduce interfacial dopants to shift the system Fermi energies downward so that the …
Graphene, as a passivation layer, can be used to protect the black phosphorus from the chemical reaction with surrounding oxygen and water. However, black phosphorus and graphene heterostructures have low efficiency of heat dissipation due to its intrinsic high thermal resistance at the interfaces. The accumulated energy from Joule heat has to be removed efficiently to avoid the malfunction of the devices. Therefore, it is of significance to investigate the interfacial thermal dissipation properties and manipulate the properties by interfacial engineering on demand. In this work, the interfaci…
Layered chalcogenides including Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3, Bi-Sb-Te ternary alloys and heterostructures are known as great thermoelectric, topological insulators and recently highlighted as plasmonic building blocks beyond noble metals. Here, we conduct a joint in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the temperature dependent nanoscale dynamics, interfacial properties and further identifying the role of native defects and edge configurations in anisotropic sublimations of Bi2Te3-Sb2Te3 in-plane heterostructure and Sb2-xBixTe3 …
The interfacial structure of SrZr$_{x}$Ti$_{1-x}$O$_3$ films grown on semiconducting Ge substrates are investigated by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and first-principles density functional theory. By systematically tuning Zr content x, the effects of bonding at the interface and epitaxial strain on the physical structure of the film can be distinguished. The interfacial perovskite layers are found to be polarized as a result of cation-anion ionic displacements perpendicular to the perovskite/semiconductor interface. We find a correlation between the observed buckling and valence band offsets a…

We have developed a dynamic self-consistent field theory, without any adjustable parameters, for unentangled polymer blends under shear. Our model accounts for the interaction between polymers, and enables one to compute the evolution of the local rheology, microstructure and the conformations of the polymer chains under shear self-consistently. We use this model to study the interfacial dynamics in sheared polymer blends and make a quantitative comparison between this model and Molecular Dynamics simulations. We find good agreement between the two methods.
The possibility of controlling the interfacial properties of artificial oxide heterostructures is still attracting researchers in the field of materials engineering. Here, we used surface sensitive techniques and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to investigate the evolution of the surface spin-polarization and lattice strains across the interfaces between La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 thin films and low-doped manganites as capping layers. We have been able to finely tune the interfacial spin-polarization by changing the capping layer thickness and composition. The spin-polarization was foun…
We investigate picosecond spin-currents across Au/iron-garnet interfaces in response to ultrafast laser heating of the electrons in the Au film. In the picoseconds after optical heating, interfacial spin currents occur due to an interfacial temperature difference between electrons in the metal and magnons in the insulator. We report measurements of this interfacial longitudinal spin Seebeck effect between Au and rare-earth iron-garnet insulators, i.e. RE$_3$ Fe$_5$O$_{12}$, where RE is Y, Eu, Tb, Tm. We use time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) measurements to characterize the thermal response …
Microscopic models of the interaction between grain boundaries (GBs) and both dislocations and cracks are of importance in understanding the role of microstructure in altering the mechanical properties of a material. A recently developed mixed atomistic and continuum method is extended to examine the interaction between GBs, dislocations and cracks. These calculations elucidate plausible microscopic mechanisms for these defect interactions and allow for the quantitative evaluation of critical parameters such as the stress to nucleate a dislocation at a step on a GB and the force needed to indu…
Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) semimetal with high mobility in charge carriers due to the existence of Dirac points. Silicene is another promising material, with properties analog to graphene. Many silicon (Si) based electronic devices can be integrated via graphene-silicene (Gra/si) hybrid structures. These electronic applications are mostly based on the ability to tune the bandgap via electronic structure deformation that is expected to be achieved by multilayer stacking, applying a transverse external electric field (EF), and altering interfacial distance. In this work, we investigate t…
We investigate the effect of capping layer (CAP) on the interfacial magnetic anisotropy energy density (K_S), magnetic damping (α), and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy-metal (Pt) / ferromagnet (Co or Py) / CAP (MgO/Ta, HfOx, or TaN). At room temperature (RT) the CAP materials influence the effective magnitude of K_S, which is associated with a formation of interfacial magnetic oxides. The dynamical dissipation parameters of Co are considerably influenced by the CAP (especially MgO) while those of Py are not. This is possibly due to an extra magnetic damping via spin-pumping process across t…
A method is proposed to compute the interfacial free energy of a Lennard-Jones system in contact with a structured wall by molecular dynamics simulation. Both the bulk liquid and bulk face-centered-cubic crystal phase along the (111) orientation are considered. Our approach is based on a thermodynamic integration scheme where first the bulk Lennard-Jones system is reversibly transformed to a state where it interacts with a structureless flat wall. In a second step, the flat structureless wall is reversibly transformed into an atomistic wall with crystalline structure. The dependence of the int…
Molecular dynamics simulations of the temperature dependent crystal growth rates of the salts, NaCl and ZnS, from their melts are reported, along with those of a number of pure metals. The growth rate of NaCl and the FCC-forming metals show little evidence of activated control, while that of ZnS and Fe, a BCC forming metal, exhibit activation barriers similar to those observed for diffusion in the melt. Unlike ZnS and Fe, the interfacial inherent structures of NaCl and Cu and Ag are found to be crystalline. We calculate the median displacement between the interfacial liquid and crystalline sta…
We studied electric field modification of magnetic properties in a Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ trilayer via magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. We observed the spontaneous formation of labyrinthine magnetic domain structure due to thermally activated domain nucleation and propagation under zero applied magnetic field. A variation of the period of the labyrinthine structure under electric field is observed as well as saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy variations. Using an analytical formula of the stripe equilibrium width we estimate the variation of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interacti…
Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the structures and energetics of coherent and semicoherent TiC/Fe interfaces. A systematic method for determining the interfacial energy for the semicoherent interface with misfit dislocation network has been developed. The obtained interfacial energies are used to calculate the aspect ratios for the disc-like precipitates and a quantitative agreement with the experimental results is reached. Based on the obtained interfacial energies and atomic structure details, we propose models for describing the evolution of the interfaci…
Theoretical analysis based on the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) theory is used to show that the product effect of flexoelectricity and rotostriction can lead to a spontaneous polarization in the vicinity of antiphase boundaries, ferroelastic twin walls, surfaces and interfaces in the octahedrally tilted phase of otherwise non-ferroelectric perovskites such as CaTiO3, SrTiO3, and EuTiO3. As an example, we numerically demonstrate a large spontaneous polarization on the order of 1-5muC/cm2 at the SrTiO3 antidistortive phase boundaries at temperatures lower than the antiferrodistortive structur…
Electric field modulation analysis of thermopower (S) - carrier concentration (n) relation of a bilayer laminate structure composed of a 1.5-nm thick conducting layer, probably TinO2n-1 (n=2, 3,...) Magnéli phase, and rutile TiO2 was performed. The results clearly showed that both the rutile TiO2 and the thin interfacial layer contribute to carrier transport: the rutile TiO2 bulk region (mobility mu~0.03 cm2V-1s-1) and the 1.5-nm thick interfacial layer (mu~0.3 cm2V-1s-1). The effective thickness of the interfacial layer, which was obtained from the S-n relation, was below ~ 3 nm, which agrees…
We demonstrate optimization of thermal conductance across nanostructures by developing a method combining atomistic Green's function and Bayesian optimization. With an aim to minimize and maximize the interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) across Si-Si and Si-Ge interfaces by means of Si/Ge composite interfacial structure, the method identifies the optimal structures from calculations of only a few percent of the entire candidates (over 60,000 structures). The obtained optimal interfacial structures are non-intuitive and impacting: the minimum-ITC structure is an aperiodic superlattice that rea…
This work provides the community with an easily executable open-source Python package designed to automize the evaluation of Interfacial Phonons (InterPhon). Its strategy of arbitrarily defining the interfacial region and periodicity alleviates the excessive computational cost in applying ab initio phonon calculations to interfaces and enables efficient extraction of interfacial phonons. InterPhon makes it possible to apply all of the phonon-based predictions that have been available for bulk systems, to interfacial systems. The first example, in which this package was applied to InAs surfaces…
The control of the in-plane domain evolution in ferroelectric thin films is not only critical to understanding ferroelectric phenomena but also to enabling functional device fabrication. However, in-plane polarized ferroelectric thin films typically exhibit complicated multi-domain states, not desirable for optoelectronic device performance. Here we report a strategy combining interfacial symmetry engineering and anisotropic strain to design single-domain, in-plane polarized ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$ thin films. Theoretical calculations predict the key role of the BaTiO$_3$ / PrScO$_3$ (110)$_O$…
Refractory multi-principal element alloys exhibiting promising mechanical properties such as excellent strength retention at elevated temperatures have been attracting increasing attention. Although their inherent chemical complexity is considered a defining feature, a challenge arises in predicting local chemical ordering, particularly in grain boundary regions with enhanced structural disorder. In this study, we use atomistic simulations of a large group of bicrystal models to sample a wide variety of interfacial sites (grain boundary) in NbMoTaW and explore emergent trends in interfacial se…
Magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) based on CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB structures is of great interest due to its application in the spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM). Large interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is required to achieve high thermal stability. Here we use first-principles calculations to investigate the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of MgO/CoFe/capping layer structures, where the capping materials include 5d metals Hf, Ta, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, Au and 6p metals Tl, Pb, Bi. We demonstrate that it is feasible to enhance PMA by using proper capping materials…
Understanding the interfacial electrical properties between metallic electrodes and low dimensional semiconductors is essential for both fundamental science and practical applications. Here we report the observation of thickness reduction induced crossover of electrical contact at Au/MoS2 interfaces. For MoS2 thicker than 5 layers, the contact resistivity slightly decreases with reducing MoS2 thickness. By contrast, the contact resistivity sharply increases with reducing MoS2 thickness below 5 layers, mainly governed by the quantum confinement effect. It is found that the interfacial potential…
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) manifesting in asymmetric layered ferromagnetic films gives rise to non-colinear spin structures stabilizing magnetization configurations with nontrivial topology. In this work magnetization reversal, domain structure, and strength of DMI are related with the structure of W/Co/Pt multilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Applied growth method enables fabrication of layered systems with higher crystalline quality than commonly applied sputtering techniques. As a result, a high value of D coefficient was determined from the aligned magnetic domain strip…
Multilayers of heavy metals and ferromagnets are the basis for the formation of various structures with inhomogeneous chiral magnetic distributions. The most informative method for studying magnetic states in such structures with a high spatial resolution is Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (L-TEM). Here, we report on the observation of chiral Néel domain walls by means of L-TEM in Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We explain the existence of chiral Néel internal structure due to the overcritical, giant interfacial induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Our …
First-principles calculations demonstrate the evolution of the band alignment at La0.7A0.3MnO3|La1-xAx|TiO2|SrTiO3(001) heterointerfaces, where A = Ca, Sr, or Ba, as the interfacial A-site composition, La1-Ax, is varied from x = 0.5 to x = 1.0. This variation leads to a linear change of the SrTiO3 valence band offset with respect to the Fermi level of the La0.7A0.3MnO3 metal electrode and hence to a linear change of the Schottky barrier height at this interface. The effect arises due to electrostatic screening of the polar interface which alters the interfacial dipole and hence the electrostat…
We report direct observation of charge accumulation effect on magnetization reversal in a Pt/Co(0.5 nm)/Pt(0.5 nm)/Al2O3 structure with perpendicular anisotropy. By imaging magnetic domain with polar Kerr microscopy, we evidence that positive charges accumulating at the Pt/Al2O3 interface result in favoring magnetic domain wall propagation, while negative charges hinder domain wall nucleation and propagation. Our results suggest that magnetic properties in Co layer can be strongly influenced by 5d electron accumulation/depletion in an ultrathin Pt layer.
The structure and chemical composition are the key parameters influencing the properties of organic thin films deposited on inorganic substrates. Such films often display structures that substantially differ from the bulk, and the substrate has a relevant influence on their polymorphism. In this work, we illuminate the role of the substrate by studying its influence for para-benzoquinone on two different substrates, Ag(111) and graphene. We employ a combination of first principles calculations and machine learning to identify the energetically most favorable structures on both substrates and s…
We study theoretically the temporal evolution and the spatial structure of the interface between two polymer melts involving three different species (A, A* and B). The first melt is composed of two different polymer species A and A* which are fairly indifferent to one another (Flory parameter chi_AA* ~ 0). The second melt is made of a pure polymer B which is strongly attracted to species A (chi_AB < 0) but strongly repelled by species A* (chi_A*B > 0). We then show that, due to these contradictory tendencies, interesting properties arise during the evolution of the interface after the melts ar…
In this paper, we show how to incorporate cubic and hexagonal anisotropies in interfacial energies in phase field models; this incorporation is achieved by including upto sixth rank tensor terms in the free energy expansion, assuming that the free energy is only a function of coarse grained composition, its gradient, curvature and aberration. We derive the number of non-zero and independent components of these tensors. Further, by demanding that the resultant interfacial energy is positive definite for inclusion of each of the tensor terms individually, we identify the constraints imposed on t…
The interfacial stiffness of structure II cyclopentane hydrate in cyclopentane liquid has been measured by the Capillary Wave Fluctuation (CWF) method for an equilibrated system with temperature of T=280K and pressure of P~20bar, close to the upper (L$_w$-Hyd-Vap-L$_{HC}$) Quadruple-point, on the boundary of the hydrate stable region. The hydrate-II/cyclopentane interfacial stiffness results fall broadly in the range $Γ_{ho}$=(35-55)$\times 10^{-3}$J/m$^2$, with an average over all simulations giving $Γ_{ho}$=45(5)$\times 10^{-3}$J/m$^2$. Earlier work of the author has determined the cubic har…
In building up composite structures using carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, the fiber-to-matrix interfacial shear strength (IFSS) is one of the most important issues. Originating from the assembly characteristics of CNT fiber, the IFSS strongly depends on the fiber's twisting level and densification level. Furthermore, there are rich ways to modify the fiber surface and thus enhance the IFSS, including the physical and chemical modification on fiber surface, the infiltration of matrix resin into CNT fiber, and the introduction of silane coupling agent. A new feature differing from carbon fibers is…
Precipitate strengthening of light metals underpins a large segment of industry.Yet, quantitative understanding of physics involved in precipitate formation is often lacking, especially, about interfacial contribution to the energetics of precipitate formation. Here, we report an intricate strain accommodation and free energy minimization mechanism in the formation of Omega precipitates (Al2Cu)in the Al_Cu_Mg_Ag alloy. We show that the affinity between Ag and Mg at the interface provides the driving force for lowering the heat of formation, while substitution between Mg, Al and Cu of different …
Using ab-initio calculations within the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT), atomic structures and electronic properties of MoS2/HfO2 interface are investigated. The impact of interfacial oxygen concentration on the MoS2/HfO2 interface electronic structure is examined in order to mimic the atomic layer deposition growth at ambient conditions. Then, the effect on band offsets and the thermodynamic stability of those interfaces is investigated and compared with available relevant experimental data. These results seem to indicate that, for a well-prepared interface, the electronic device…
Zero-Group Velocity (ZGV) Lamb waves are studied in a structure composed of two plates bonded by an adhesive layer. The dispersion curves are calculated for a Duralumin/epoxy/Duralumin sample, where the adhesion is modeled by a normal and a tangential spring at both interfaces. Several ZGV modes are identified and their frequency dependence on interfacial stiffnesses and on the bonding layer thickness are numerically studied. Then, experiments achieved with laser ultrasonic techniques are presented. Local resonances are measured using superimposed source and probe. Knowing the thicknesses and …
The sensitive dependence of monolayer materials on their environment often gives rise to unexpected properties. It was recently demonstrated that monolayer FeSe on a SrTiO$_3$ substrate exhibits a much higher superconducting critical temperature T$_C$ than the bulk material. Here, we examine the interfacial structure of FeSe / SrTiO$_3$ and the effect of an interfacial Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ layer on the increased T$_C$ using a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory. We find Ti$_{1+x}$O$_2$ forms its own quasi-two-dimensional layer, bonding to both the …
Intercalation is an established technique for tailoring the electronic structure of epitaxial graphene. Moreover, it enables the synthesis of otherwise unstable two-dimensional (2D) layers of elements with unique physical properties compared to their bulk versions due to interfacial quantum confinement. In this work, we present uniformly Pb-intercalated quasi-freestanding monolayer graphene on SiC, which turns out to be essentially charge neutral with an unprecedented $p$-type carrier density of only $(5.5\pm2.5)\times10^9$ cm$^{-2}$. Probing the low-energy electronic structure throughout the …
Spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) attracts extensive attentions due to its non-volatility, high density and low power consumption. The core device in STT-MRAM is CoFeB/MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), which possesses a high tunnel magnetoresistance ratio as well as a large value of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). It has been experimentally proven that a capping layer coating on CoFeB layer is essential to obtain a strong PMA. However, the physical mechanism of such effect remains unclear. In this paper, we investigate the origin of the PMA in MgO/C…
We report measurements of the normal surface forces and friction forces between two mica surfaces separated by a nano-film of dicationic ionic liquid using a Surface Force Balance. Friction measurements performed at different film thicknesses display quantized friction, i.e. discontinuities in friction as layers are squeezed out and friction coefficients dependent on the number of liquid layers confined…
