Dynamics of quenching temperature is studied in pure and random Ising chains. Using the Kibble-Zurek argument, we obtain for the pure Ising model that the density of kinks after quenching decays as 1/\sqrtτ with the quench rate of temperature 1/τfor large τ. For the random Ising model, we show that decay rates of the density of kinks and the residual energy are 1/\lnτand 1/(\lnτ)^2 for large τrespectively. Analytic results for the random Ising model are confirmed by the Monte-Carlo simulation. Our results reveal a clear difference between classical and quantum quenches in the random Ising chain.
A ferromagnetic Ising chain which is endowed with a single-spin-flip Glauber dynamics is investigated. For an arbitrary annealing protocol, we derive an exact integral equation for the domain wall density. This integral equation admits an asymptotic solution in the limit of extremely slow cooling. For instance, we extract an asymptotic of the density of domain walls at the end of the cooling procedure when the temperature vanishes. Slow annealing is usually studied using a Kibble-Zurek argument; in our setting, this argument leads to approximate predictions which are in good agreement with exa…
We show that current estimates of the critical exponents of the three-dimensional random-field Ising model are in agreement with the exponents of the pure Ising system in dimension 3 - theta where theta is the exponent that governs the hyperscaling violation in the random case.
The Shannon and the Renyi entropies of the ground state wavefunction in the pure and in the random quantum Ising chain are studied via the self-dual Fernandez-Pacheco real-space renormalization procedure. In particular, we analyze the critical behavior of the leading extensive term at the quantum phase transition : the derivative with respect to the control parameter is found to be logarithmically divergent in the pure case, and to display a cusp singularity in the random case. This cusp singularity for the random case is also derived via the Strong Disorder Renormalization approach.
A bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model is used to simulate Kauzmann's mechanism of vitrification in liquids, by a Glauber Monte Carlo simulation. The rearrangement of configurations is achieved by allowing impurity bonds to hop to nearest neighbors at the same rate as the spins flip. For slow cooling, the theoretical minimum energy configuration is approached, characterized by an amorphous distribution of locally optimally arranged impurity bonds. Rapid cooling to low temperatures regularly finds bond configurations of higher energy, which are both a priori rare and severely restrictive…
We investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on the critical properties of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model embedded in a triangular lattice. The system is studied in both the pure and disordered versions by the same efficient two-stage Wang-Landau method. In the first part of our study we present the finite-size scaling behavior of the pure model, for which we calculate the critical amplitude of the specific heat's logarithmic expansion. For the disordered system, the numerical data and the relevant detailed finite-size scaling analysis along the lines of the two well-k…
The temperature dependence of the uniform susceptibility, chi, of diluted two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets Rb2Co1-xMgxF4,0<=x<=0.4, is investigated in the limit of vanishing external field. Novel data for x = 0.15 are compared with those obtained for x = 0 and 0.4 by Breed et al. (1969) and Ikeda (1983), respectively. Whereas in the pure case, x = 0, Fishers (1962) "energetic contribution" dominates, Aharony et al.s (1979,1986) "random contribution" becomes increasingly important with increasing x. Taking into account both terms not only with respect to the global ordering temperature, T…
The Dyson hierarchical version of the quantum Ising chain with Long-Ranged power-law ferromagnetic couplings $J(r) \propto r^{-1-σ}$ and pure or random transverse fields is studied via real-space renormalization. For the pure case, the critical exponents are explicitly obtained as a function of the parameter $σ$, and are compared with previous results of other approaches. For the random case, the RG rules are numerically applied and the critical behaviors are compared with previous Strong Disorder Renormalization results.

The critical exponent beta =0.17(1) for the three-dimensional random-field Ising model (RFIM) order parameter upon zero-field cooling (ZFC) has been determined using extinction-free magnetic x-ray scattering techniques for Fe(0.85)Zn(0.15)F2. This result is consistent with other exponents determined for the RFIM in that Rushbrooke scaling is satisfied. Nevertheless, there is poor agreement with equilibrium computer simulations, and the ZFC results do not agree with field-cooling (FC) results. We present details of hysteresis in Bragg scattering amplitudes and line shapes that help elucidate th…
The Glauber dynamics of the pure and weakly disordered random-bond 2d Ising model is studied at zero-temperature. A single characteristic length scale, $L(t)$, is extracted from the equal time correlation function. In the pure case, the persistence probability decreases algebraically with the coarsening length scale. In the disordered case, three distinct regimes are identified: a short time regime where the behaviour is pure-like; an intermediate regime where the persistence probability decays non-algebraically with time; and a long time regime where the domains freeze and there is a cessatio…
In order to study the influence of quenched disorder on second-order phase transitions, high-temperature series expansions of the \sus and the free energy are obtained for the quenched bond-diluted Ising model in $d = 3$--5 dimensions. They are analysed using different extrapolation methods tailored to the expected singularity behaviours. In $d = 4$ and 5 dimensions we confirm that the critical behaviour is governed by the pure fixed point up to dilutions near the geometric bond percolation threshold. The existence and form of logarithmic corrections for the pure Ising model in $d = 4$ is conf…
Using the mapping of the partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model onto a pfaffian we evaluate the domain wall free energy difference for the pure and disordered Ising model close to the pure fixed point. Using this method very large lattices can be studied exactly and we confirm that disorder even including frustrating interactions indeed are irrelevant close to the pure fixed point. The finite-size renormalization group flow shows a power-law behavior modified by a logarithmic term that dominates for small lattice sizes.
The leading term for the average height of the barriers which could separate pure states in Ising spin glasses is calculated using instanton methods. It is finite in dimensions $d < 6$. Replica symmetry breaking requires that the barriers between pure states are infinite in the thermodynamic limit, as finite barriers allow thermal mixing of pure states. As a consequence, a replica symmetry broken phase cannot survive when $d < 6$. However, for $d > 6$ no similar instanton solution exists.
The time and temperature dependence of the field-cooled magnetization of a three dimensional Ising spin glass, Fe_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}TiO_{3}, has been investigated. The temperature and cooling rate dependence is found to exhibit memory phenomena that can be related to the memory behavior of the low frequency ac-susceptibility. The results add some further understanding on how to model the three dimensional Ising spin glass in real space.
The influence of random site dilution on the critical properties of the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice was explored by Monte Carlo simulations with the Wang-Landau sampling. The lattice linear size was $L = 20-120$ and the concentration of diluted sites $q=0.1, 0.2, 0.3$. Its pure version displays a second-order phase transition with a vanishing specific heat critical exponent $α$, thus, the Harris criterion is inconclusive, in that disorder is a relevant or irrelevant perturbation for the critical behavior of the pure system. The main effort was focused on the specific heat a…
Random bond Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice are considered. Interesting inequalities between eigenvalues of the Jacobian renormalization matrix at the pure fixed point are obtained. These lead to upper bounds on the crossover exponents $\{ϕ_i\}$.
For the quantum Ising chain, the self-dual block renormalization procedure of Fernandez-Pacheco [Phys. Rev. D 19, 3173 (1979)] is known to reproduce exactly the location of the zero-temperature critical point and the correlation length exponent $ν=1$. Recently, Miyazaki and Nishimori [Phys. Rev. E 87, 032154 (2013)] have proposed to study the disordered quantum Ising model in dimensions $d>1$ by applying the Fernandez-Pacheco procedure successively in each direction. To avoid the inequivalence of directions of their approach, we propose here an alternative procedure where the $d$ directions ar…
Random Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice with both, random fields and random bonds, are considered. Rigorous inequalities between eigenvalues of the Jacobian renormalization matrix at the pure fixed point are obtained. These inequalities lead to upper bounds on the crossover exponents $\{ϕ_i\}$.
We consider the three-dimensional randomly diluted Ising model and study the critical behavior of the static and dynamic spin-spin correlation functions (static and dynamic structure factors) at the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition in the high-temperature phase. We consider a purely relaxational dynamics without conservation laws, the so-called model A. We present Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative field-theoretical calculations. While the critical behavior of the static structure factor is quite similar to that occurring in pure Ising systems, the dynamic structure factor shows a s…
Monte Carlo simulations of the short-time dynamic behavior are reported for three-dimensional weakly site-diluted Ising model with spin concentrations $p=0.95$ and 0.8 at criticality. In contrast to studies of the critical behavior of the pure systems by the short-time dynamics method, our investigations of site-diluted Ising model have revealed three stages of the dynamic evolution characterizing a crossover phenomenon from the critical behavior typical for the pure systems to behavior determined by the influence of disorder. The static and dynamic critical exponents are determined with the u…
We consider the stochastic dynamics of the pure and random ferromagnetic Ising model on the hierarchical diamond lattice of branching ratio $K$ with fractal dimension $d_f=(\ln (2K))/\ln 2$. We adapt the Real Space Renormalization procedure introduced in our previous work [C. Monthus and T. Garel, J. Stat. Mech. P02037 (2013)] to study the equilibrium time $t_{eq}(L)$ as a function of the system size $L$ near zero-temperature. For the pure Ising model, we obtain the behavior $t_{eq}(L) \sim L^α e^{β2J L^{d_s}} $ where $d_s=d_f-1$ is the interface dimension, and we compute the prefactor exponen…
Ground states of 3d EA Ising spin glasses are calculated for sizes up to $14^3$ using a combination of genetic algorithms and cluster-exact approximation . The distribution $P(|q|)$ of overlaps is calculated. For increasing size the width of $P(|q|)$ converges to a nonzero value, indicating that many pure ground states exist for short range Ising spin glasses.
We present a large-scale simulation of the three-dimensional Ising spin glass with Gaussian disorder to low temperatures and large sizes using optimized population annealing Monte Carlo. Our primary focus is investigating the number of pure states regarding a controversial statistic, characterizing the fraction of centrally peaked disorder instances, of the overlap function order parameter. We observe that this statistic is subtly and sensitively influenced by the slight fluctuations of the integrated central weight of the disorder-averaged overlap function, making the asymptotic growth behavi…
We consider the stochastic dynamics of Ising ferromagnets (either pure or random) near zero temperature. The master equation satisfying detailed balance can be mapped onto a quantum Hamiltonian which has an exact zero-energy ground state representing the thermal equilibrium. The largest relaxation time $t_{eq}$ governing the convergence towards this Boltzmann equilibrium in finite-size systems is determined by the lowest non-vanishing eigenvalue $E_1=1/t_{eq}$ of the quantum Hamiltonian $H$. We introduce and study a real-space renormalization procedure for the quantum Hamiltonian associated to…
We consider $M \geq 2$ pure or random quantum Ising chains of $N$ spins when they are coupled via a single star junction at their origins or when they are coupled via two star junctions at the their two ends leading to the watermelon geometry. The energy gap is studied via a sequential self-dual real-space renormalization procedure that can be explicitly solved in terms of Kesten variables containing the initial couplings and and the initial transverse fields. In the pure case at criticality, the gap is found to decay as a power-law $Δ_M \propto N^{-z(M)} $ with the dynamical exponent $z(M)=\f…
Using high-precision Monte-Carlo simulations based on a parallel version of the Wang-Landau algorithm and finite-size scaling techniques we study the effect of quenched disorder in the crystal-field coupling of the Blume-Capel model on the square lattice. We mainly focus on the part of the phase diagram where the pure model undergoes a continuous transition, known to fall into the universality class of the pure Ising ferromagnet. A dedicated scaling analysis reveals concrete evidence in favor of the strong universality hypothesis with the presence of additional logarithmic corrections in the s…
We study the nature of the broken ergodicity in the low temperature phase of Ising spin glass systems, using as a diagnostic tool the spectrum of eigenvalues of the spin-spin correlation function. We show that multiple extensive eigenvalues of the correlation matrix $C_{ij}\equiv< S_i S_j>$ occur if and only if there is replica symmetry breaking. We support our arguments with Exchange Monte-Carlo results for the infinite-range problem. Here we find multiple extensive eigenvalues in the RSB phase for $N \agt 200$, but only a single extensive eigenvalue for phases with long-range order but no RS…
We reexamine the disorder-dominated multicritical point of the two-dimensional +/-J Ising model, known as the Nishimori point (NP). At the NP we investigate numerically and analytically the behavior of the disorder correlator, familiar from the self-dual description of the pure critical point of the two-dimensional Ising model. We consider the logarithmic average and the q-th moments of this correlator in the ensemble average over randomness, for continuous q in the range 0<q<2.5, and demonstrate their conformal invariance. At the NP we find, in contrast to the self-dual pure critical point, t…
The random-field Ising model is one of the few disordered systems where the perturbative renormalization group can be carried out to all orders of perturbation theory. This analysis predicts dimensional reduction, i.e., that the critical properties of the random-field Ising model in $D$ dimensions are identical to those of the pure Ising ferromagnet in $D-2$ dimensions. It is well known that dimensional reduction is not true in three dimensions, thus invalidating the perturbative renormalization group prediction. Here, we report high-precision numerical simulations of the 5D random-field Ising…
In the two-dimensional Ising model weak random surface field is predicted to be a marginally irrelevant perturbation at the critical point. We study this question by extensive Monte Carlo simulations for various strength of disorder. The calculated effective (temperature or size dependent) critical exponents fit with the field-theoretical results and can be interpreted in terms of the predicted logarithmic corrections to the pure system's critical behaviour.
The statistics of critical spin-spin correlation functions in Ising systems with non-frustrated disorder are investigated on a strip geometry, via numerical transfer-matrix techniques. Conformal invariance concepts are used, in order to test for logarithmic corrections to pure power-law decay against distance. Fits of our data to conformal-invariance expressions, specific to logarithmic corrections to correlations on strips, give results with the correct sign, for the moments of order $n=0-4$ of the correlation-function distribution. We find an interval of disorder strength along which correct…
The single-cluster Monte Carlo algorithm and the reweighting technique are used to simulate the 3D-ferromagnetic Ising model on three dimensional Voronoi-Delaunay lattices. It is assumed that the coupling factor $J$ varies with the distance $r$ between the first neighbors as $J(r) \propto e^{-ar}$, with $a \ge 0$. The critical exponents $γ/ν$, $β/ν$, and $ν$ are calculated, and according to the present estimates for the critical exponents, we argue that this random system belongs to the same universality class of the pure three-dimensional ferromegnetic Ising model.
We report results of a Wang-Landau study of the random bond square Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nn}/J_{nnn}=1$ for which the competitive nature of interactions produces a sublattice ordering known as superantiferromagnetism and the pure system undergoes a second-order transition with a positive specific heat exponent $α$. For a particular disorder strength we study the effects of bond randomness and we find that, while the critical exponents of the correlation length $ν$, magnetization $β$,…
Random bond Ising systems on a general hierarchical lattice are considered. The inequality between the specific heat exponent of the pure system, $α_p$, and the crossover exponent $ϕ$, $α_p<=ϕ$, gives rise to a possibility of a negative $α_p$ along with a positive $ϕ$, leading to random criticality in disagreement with the Harris criterion. An explicit example where this really happens for an Ising system is presented and discussed. In addition to that, it is shown that in presence of full long-range correlations, the crossover exponent is larger than in the uncorrelated case.
We consider long, finite-width strips of Ising spins with randomly distributed couplings. Frustration is introduced by allowing both ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions. Free energy and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated by transfer-matrix methods. Numerical derivatives and finite-size scaling concepts allow estimates of the usual critical exponents $γ/ν$, $α/ν$ and $ν$ to be obtained, whenever a second-order transition is present. Low-temperature ordering persists for suitably small concentrations of frustrated bonds, with a transition governed by pure--Ising exponents. Cont…
A cluster algorithm formulated in continuous (imaginary) time is presented for Ising models in a transverse field. It works directly with an infinite number of time-slices in the imaginary time direction, avoiding the necessity to take this limit explicitly. The algorithm is tested at the zero-temperature critical point of the pure two-dimensional (2d) transverse Ising model. Then it is applied to the 2d Ising ferromagnet with random bonds and transverse fields, for which the phase diagram is determined. Finite size scaling at the quantum critical point as well as the study of the quantum Grif…
A quantum phase transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase is driven by a time-dependent external magnetic field. For any rate of the transition the evolution is non-adiabatic and finite density of defects is excited in the ferromagnetic state. The density of excitations has only logarithmic dependence on the transition rate. This is much weaker than any usual power law scaling predicted for pure systems by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.
A lot of progress has been made recently in our understanding of the random-field Ising model thanks to large-scale numerical simulations. In particular, it has been shown that, contrary to previous statements: the critical exponents for different probability distributions of the random fields and for diluted antiferromagnets in a field are the same. Therefore, critical universality, which is a perturbative renormalization-group prediction, holds beyond the validity regime of perturbation theory. Most notably, dimensional reduction is restored at five dimensions, i.e., the exponents of the ran…
The systematic approach for the calculations of the non-perturbative contributions to the free energy in the ferromagnetic phase of the random field Ising model is developed. It is demonstrated that such contributions appear due to localized in space instanton-like excitations. It is shown that away from the critical region such instanton solutions are described by the set of the mean-field saddle-point equations for the replica vector order parameter, and these equations can be formally reduced to the only saddle-point equation of the pure system in dimensions (D-2). In the marginal case, D=3…
We study by Monte Carlo simulations the influence of bond dilution on the three-dimensional Ising model. This paradigmatic model in its pure version displays a second-order phase transition with a positive specific heat critical exponent $α$. According to the Harris criterion disorder should hence lead to a new fixed point characterized by new critical exponents. We have determined the phase diagram of the diluted model, between the pure model limit and the percolation threshold. For the estimation of critical exponents, we have first performed a finite-size scaling study, where we concentrate…
