The Glauber dynamics of the pure and weakly disordered random-bond 2d Ising model is studied at zero-temperature. A single characteristic length scale, $L(t)$, is extracted from the equal time correlation function. In the pure case, the persistence probability decreases algebraically with the coarsening length scale. In the disordered case, three distinct regimes are identified: a short time regime where the behaviour is pure-like; an intermediate regime where the persistence probability decays non-algebraically with time; and a long time regime where the domains freeze and there is a cessation of growth. In the intermediate regime, we find that $P(t)\sim L(t)^{-θ'}$, where $θ' = 0.420\pm 0.009$. The value of $θ'$ is consistent with that found for the pure 2d Ising model at zero-temperature. Our results in the intermediate regime are consistent with a logarithmic decay of the persistence probability with time, $P(t)\sim (\ln t)^{-θ_d}$, where $θ_d = 0.63\pm 0.01$.
We study the dynamic and metastable properties of the fully connected Ising $p$-spin model with finite number of variables. We define trapping energies, trapping times and self correlation functions and we analyse their statistical properties in comparison to the predictions of trap models.
The current status of experiments on the d=2 and d=3 random-exchange and random-field Ising models, as realized in dilute anisotropic antiferromagnets, is discussed. Two areas of current investigation are emphasized. For d=3, the large random field limit is being investigated and equilibrium critical behavior is being characterized at high magnetic concentrations.
Using a formalism based on the spectral decomposition of the replicated transfer matrix for disordered Ising models, we obtain several results that apply both to isolated one-dimensional systems and to locally tree-like graph and factor graph (p-spin) ensembles. We present exact analytical expressions, which can be efficiently approximated numerically, for many types of correlation functions and for the average free energies of open and closed finite chains. All the results achieved, with the exception of those involving closed chains, are then rigorously derived without replicas, using a prob…
We consider the $\pm J$ Ising model on a cubic lattice with a gauge-invariant disorder distribution. Disorder depends on a parameter $β_G$ that plays the role of a chemical potential for the amount of frustration. We study the model at a specific value of the disorder parameter $β_G$, where frustration shows long-range correlations. We characterize the universality class, obtaining accurate estimates of the critical exponents: $ν= 0.655(15)$ and $η_q = 1.05(5)$, where $η_q$ is the overlap susceptibility exponent.
The critical behavior of the disordered ferromagnetic Ising model is studied numerically by the Monte Carlo method in a wide range of variation of concentration of nonmagnetic impurity atoms. The temperature dependences of correlation length and magnetic susceptibility are determined for samples with various spin concentrations and various linear sizes. The finite-size scaling technique is used for obtaining scaling functions for these quantities, which exhibit a universal behavior in the critical region; the critical temperatures and static critical exponents are also determined using scaling…
The mechanism of appearance of exponentially large number of metastable states in magnetic phases of disordered Ising magnets with short-range random exchange is suggested. It is based on the assumption that transitions into inhomogeneous magnetic phases results from the condensation of macroscopically large number of sparse delocalized modes near the localization threshold. The properties of metastable states in random magnets with zero ground state magnetization (dilute antiferromagnet, binary spin glass, dilute ferromagnet with dipole interaction) has been obtained in framework of this mech…
We study the dynamics of macroscopic observables such as the magnetization and the energy per degree of freedom in Ising spin models on random graphs of finite connectivity, with random bonds and/or heterogeneous degree distributions. To do so we generalize existing implementations of dynamical replica theory and cavity field techniques to systems with strongly disordered and locally tree-like interactions. We illustrate our results via application to the dynamics of e.g. $\pm J$ spin-glasses on random graphs and of the overlap in finite connectivity Sourlas codes. All results are tested again…
We study the low temperature out of equilibrium Monte Carlo dynamics of the disordered Ising $p$-spin Model with $p=3$ and a small number of spin variables. We focus on sequences of configurations that are stable against single spin flips obtained by instantaneous gradient descent from persistent ones. We analyze the statistics of energy gaps, energy barriers and trapping times on sub-sequences such that the overlap between consecutive configurations does not overcome a threshold. We compare our results to the predictions of various trap models finding the best agreement with the step model wh…
The Ising and BEG models critical behavior is analyzed in 2D and 3D by means of a renormalization group scheme on small clusters made of a few lattice cells. Different kinds of cells are proposed for both ordered and disordered model cases. In particular, cells preserving a possible antiferromagnetic ordering under decimation allow for the determination of the Néel critical point and its scaling indices. These also provide more reliable estimates of the Curie fixed point than those obtained using cells preserving only the ferromagnetic ordering. In all studied dimensions, the present procedure…
Ground-state and finite-temperature properties of a special class of exactly solvable Ising-Heisenberg planar models are examined using the generalized decoration-iteration and star-triangle mapping transformations. The investigated spin systems exhibit an interesting quantum behaviour manifested in a remarkable geometric spin frustration, which appears notwithstanding the purely ferromagnetic interactions of the considered model systems. This kind of spin frustration originates from an easy-plane anisotropy in the XXZ Heisenberg interaction between nearest-neighbouring spins that favours ferr…
Here is the first part of the summary of my work on random Ising model using real-space renormalization group (RSRG), also known as a Migdal-Kadanoff one. This approximate renormalization scheme was applied to the analysis thermodynamic properties of the model, and of probabilistic properties of a pair correlator, which is a fluctuating object in disordered systems. The physics of the spin glass (SG) state, with magnetic moments (spins) frozen in random orientations, is one of the most intriguing problems in condensed matter physics. While most theoretical studies have focused on the Edwards-Anderson model of Ising spins with only discrete `up/down' directions, such Ising systems are experimentally rare. LiHo$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$F$_{4}$, where the Ho$^{3+}$ moments are well described by Ising spins, is an almost ideal Ising SG material. In LiHo$_{x}$Y$_{1-x}$F$_{4}$, the Ho$^{3+}$ moments interact predominantly via the inherently frustrated magnetostatic dipole…
Motivated by the compound ${\rm LiHo}_x{\rm Y}_{1-x}{\rm F}_4$, we consider the Ising chain with random couplings and in the presence of simultaneous random transverse and longitudinal fields, and study its low-energy properties at zero temperature by the strong disorder renormalization group approach. In the absence of longitudinal fields, the system exhibits a quantum-ordered and a quantum-disordered phase separated by a critical point of infinite disorder. When the longitudinal random field is switched on, the ordered phase vanishes and the trajectories of the renormalization group are attr…
When the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model is represented as a noninteracting fermion problem, it has the same symmetries as an ensemble of random matrices known as class D. A nonlinear sigma model analysis of the latter in two dimensions has previously led to the prediction of a metallic phase, in which the fermion eigenstates at zero energy are extended. In this paper we argue that such behavior cannot occur in the random-bond Ising model, by showing that the Ising spin correlations in the metallic phase violate the bound on such correlations that results from the reality of the Ising …
Renormalization group on hierarchical lattices is often considered a valuable tool to understand the critical behavior of more complicated statistical mechanical models. In presence of quenched disorder, however, in many model cases predictions obtained with the Migdal-Kadanoff bond removal approach fail to quantitatively and qualitatively reproduce critical properties obtained in the mean-field approximation or by numerical simulations in finite dimensions. In order to critically review this limitation we analyze the behavior of Ising and Blume-Emery-Griffiths models on more complicated hiera…
We derive the analytical expression for the first finite size correction to the average free energy of disordered Ising models on random regular graphs. The formula can be physically interpreted as a weighted sum over all non self-intersecting loops in the graph, the weight being the free-energy shift due to the addition of the loop to an infinite tree.
Using the mapping of the partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model onto a pfaffian we evaluate the domain wall free energy difference for the pure and disordered Ising model close to the pure fixed point. Using this method very large lattices can be studied exactly and we confirm that disorder even including frustrating interactions indeed are irrelevant close to the pure fixed point. The finite-size renormalization group flow shows a power-law behavior modified by a logarithmic term that dominates for small lattice sizes.
Renyi Mutual information (RMI), computed from second Renyi entropies, can identify classical phase transitions from their finite-size scaling at the critical points. We apply this technique to examine the presence or absence of finite temperature phase transitions in various two-dimensional models on a square lattice, which are extensions of the conventional Ising model by adding a quenched disorder. When the quenched disorder causes the nearest neighbor bonds to be both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, (a) a spin glass phase exists only at zero temperature, and (b) a ferromagnetic phase e…
We consider an Ising competitive model defined over a triangular Husimi tree where loops, responsible for an explicit frustration, are even allowed. After a critical analysis of the phase diagram, in which a ``gas of non interacting dimers (or spin liquid) - ferro or antiferromagnetic ordered state'' transition is recognized in the frustrated regions, we introduce the disorder for studying the spin glass version of the model: the triangular +/- J model. We find out that, for any finite value of the averaged couplings, the model exhibits always a phase transition, even in the frustrated regions…
The real-space renormalization group (RG) treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains by Fisher ({\it Phys. Rev. B{\bf 51}, 6411 (1995)}) has been extended into the strongly ordered and strongly disordered Griffiths phases and asymptotically exact results are obtained. In the non-critical region the asymmetry of the renormalization of the couplings and the transverse fields is related to a non-linear quantum control parameter, $Δ$, which is a natural measure of the distance from the quantum critical point. $Δ$, which is found to stay invariant along the RG trajectories and has been …
We prove that the variance of spin overlap vanishes in disordered Ising models satisfying the Fortuin-Kasteleyn-Ginibre (FKG) inequality under a uniform field, such as generally distributed random field Ising model, site- and bond-diluted Ising models with the Bernoulli distribution. Chatterjee's proof for the Gaussian random field Ising model is generalized to other independent identically distributed quenched disorder under a uniform field.
Exact ground states are calculated with an integer optimization algorithm for two and three dimensional site-diluted Ising antiferromagnets in a field (DAFF) and random field Ising ferromagnets (RFIM). We investigate the structure and the size-distribution of the domains of the ground state and compare it to earlier results from Monte Carlo simulations for finite temperature. Although DAFF and RFIM are thought to be in the same universality class we found essential differences between these systems as far as the domain properties are concerned. For the DAFF the ground states consist of fractal…
Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we study aging properties of two disordered systems quenched below their critical point, namely the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model and the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass with a bimodal distribution of the coupling constants. We study the two-times autocorrelation and space-time correlation functions and show that in both systems a simple aging scenario prevails in terms of the scaling variable $L(t)/L(s)$, where $L$ is the time-dependent correlation length, whereas $s$ is the waiting time and $t$ is the observation time. The…
We study the stochastic parallel dynamics of Ising spin systems defined on finitely connected directed random graphs with arbitrary degree distributions, using generating functional analysis. For fully asymmetric graphs the dynamics of the system can be completely solved, due to the asymptotic absence of loops. For arbitrary graph symmetry, we solve the dynamics exactly for the first few time steps, and we construct approximate stationary solutions.
A ``persistence'' exponent theta has been extensively used to describe the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin systems following a deep quench: for zero-temperature homogeneous Ising models on the d-dimensional cubic lattice, the fraction p(t) of spins not flipped by time t decays to zero like t^[-theta(d)] for low d; for high d, p(t) may decay to p(infinity)>0, because of ``blocking'' (but perhaps still like a power). What are the effects of disorder or changes of lattice? We show that these can quite generally lead to blocking (and convergence to a metastable configuration) even for low d, and t…
In a previous paper we found that in the random field Ising model at zero temperature in three dimensions the correlation length is not self-averaging near the critical point and that the violation of self-averaging is maximal. This is due to the formation of bound states in the underlying field theory. We present a similar study for the case of disordered Potts and Ising ferromagnets in two dimensions near the critical temperature. In the random Potts model the correlation length is not self-averaging near the critical temperature but the violation of self-averaging is weaker than in the rand…
The critical behavior of the contact process (CP) in heterogeneous periodic and weakly-disordered environments is investigated using the supercritical series expansion and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. Phase-separation lines and critical exponents $β$ (from series expansion) and $η$ (from MC simulations) are calculated. A general analytical expression for the locus of critical points is suggested for the weak-disorder limit and confirmed by the series expansion analysis and the MC simulations. Our results for the critical exponents show that the CP in heterogeneous environments remains in the …
We show analytically that the perturbative expansion for the free energy of the zero dimensional (quenched) disordered Ising model is Borel-summable in a certain range of parameters, provided that the summation is carried out in two steps: first, in the strength of the original coupling of the Ising model and subsequently in the variance of the quenched disorder. This result is illustrated by some high-precision calculations of the free energy obtained by a straightforward numerical implementation of our sequential summation method.
It is shown that the Wegner model of disorder contains a system of constraints which is important whenever the disorder is not weak and which is responsible for localization in D > 2 dimensions. When the disorder is strong the constraints divide the phase space into an exponentially large number of domains; the localized phase is a glass. This work is based on recently developed field theories which are exactly equivalent to the Wegner model and to an easier variant.
We study transport of interacting particles in weakly disordered media. Our one-dimensional system includes (i) disorder: the hopping rate governing the movement of a particle between two neighboring lattice sites is inhomogeneous, and (ii) hard core interaction: the maximum occupancy at each site is one particle. We find that over a substantial regime, the root-mean-square displacement of a particle, sigma, grows super-diffusively with time t, sigma ~ (epsilon t)^{2/3}, where epsilon is the disorder strength. Without disorder the particle displacement is sub-diffusive, sigma ~ t^{1/4}, and th…
The effects of quenched disorder on nonequilibrium phase transitions in the directed percolation universality class are revisited. Using a strong-disorder energy-space renormalization group, it is shown that for any amount of disorder the critical behavior is controlled by an infinite-randomness fixed point in the universality class of the random transverse-field Ising models. The experimental relevance of our results are discussed.
We study the synchronous stochastic dynamics of the random field and random bond Ising chain. For this model the generating functional analysis methods of De Dominicis leads to a formalism with transfer operators, similar to transfer matrices in equilibrium studies, but with dynamical paths of spins and (conjugate) fields as arguments, as opposed to replicated spins. In the thermodynamic limit the macroscopic dynamics is captured by the dominant eigenspace of the transfer operator, leading to a relative simple and transparent set of equations that are easy to solve numerically. Our results are…
We present an alternative procedure for solving the eigenvalue problem of replicated transfer matrices describing disordered spin systems with (random) 1D nearest neighbor bonds and/or random fields, possibly in combination with (random) long range bonds. Our method is based on transforming the original eigenvalue problem for a $2^n\times 2^n$ matrix (where $n\to 0$) into an eigenvalue problem for integral operators. We first develop our formalism for the Ising chain with random bonds and fields, where we recover known results. We then apply our methods to models of spins which interact simult…
We study the dynamics of bond-disordered Ising spin systems on random graphs with finite connectivity, using generating functional analysis. Rather than disorder-averaged correlation and response functions (as for fully connected systems), the dynamic order parameter is here a measure which represents the disorder averaged single-spin path probabilities, given external perturbation field paths. In the limit of completely asymmetric graphs our macroscopic laws close already in terms of the single-spin path probabilities at zero external field. For the general case of arbitrary graph symmetry we…
The out-of-equilibrium excess conductance of electron-glasses typically relaxes with a logarithmic time-dependence. Here it is shown that the log(t) relaxation of a weakly-disordered amorphous indium-oxide films crosses-over asymptotically to an exponential dependence. This allows assigning a well-defined relaxation-time t' for a given system-disorder (characterized by the Ioffe-Regel parameter). Near the metal-insulator transition, t' obeys the scaling relation with the same critical disorder where the zero-temperature conductivity of this system vanishes. The latter defines the position of t…
By performing a high-statistics simulation of the $D=4$ random-field Ising model at zero temperature for different shapes of the random-field distribution, we show that the model is ruled by a single universality class. We compute to a high accuracy the complete set of critical exponents for this class, including the correction-to-scaling exponent. Our results indicate that in four dimensions: (i) dimensional reduction as predicted by the perturbative renormalization group does not hold and (ii) three independent critical exponents are needed to described the transition.
The phase-ordering kinetics of the ferromagnetic two-dimensional Ising model with uniform disorder is investigated by intensive Monte Carlo simulations. Taking into account finite-time corrections to scaling, simple ageing behaviour is observed in the two-time responses and correlators. The dynamical exponent z and the form of the scaling functions only depend on the ratio eps/T, where eps describes the width of the distribution of the disorder. The agreement of the predictions of local scale-invariance generalised to z<> 2 for the two-time scaling functions of response and correlations with t…
We review some of the techniques used to study the dynamics of disordered systems subject to both quenched and fast (thermal) noise. Starting from the Martin-Siggia-Rose path integral formalism for a single variable stochastic dynamics, we provide a pedagogical survey of the perturbative, i.e. diagrammatic, approach to dynamics and how this formalism can be used for studying soft spin models. We review the supersymmetric formulation of the Langevin dynamics of these models and discuss the physical implications of the supersymmetry. We also describe the key steps involved in studying the disord…
A disordered alloy Ap B1-p where both A and B represent the magnetic atoms with respective spin SA =1/2 and SB =1 and whose magnetic interaction can be described through Ising Hamiltonian is treated using the cluster-variational method. In this method it is assumed that the system is built out of building block which is embedded in an effective field. Taking building block as 4-atom cluster the approximate free energy of the alloy is then obtained by treating the interactions between spins within the cluster of all possible configurations in exact manner and the rest of the interaction by an e…
We start from the Theory of Random Point Processes to derive n-point coupled master equations describing the continuous dynamics of discrete variables in random graphs. These equations constitute a hierarchical set of approximations that generalize and improve the Cavity Master Equation (CME) recently obtained in other publications. Our derivation clarifies some of the hypotheses and approximations that originally lead to the CME, considered now as the first order of a more general technique. We tested the new scheme in the dynamics of three models defined over diluted graphs: the Ising ferrom…
We consider a two-dimensional Ising model with random i.i.d. nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic couplings and no external magnetic field. We show that, if the probability of supercritical couplings is small enough, the system admits a convergent cluster expansion with probability one. The associated polymers are defined on a sequence of increasing scales; in particular the convergence of the above expansion implies the infinite differentiability of the free energy but not its analyticity. The basic tools in the proof are a general theory of graded cluster expansions and a stochastic domination of …
The calculation of the Kondo cloud is extended to disordered hosts. For a weakly disordered large three-dimensional host the structure of the ground state is very close to the pure host. However, the range of the disordered electron basis is much shorter. The extention of the Kondo cloud is essentially given by the square root of the Kondo length in the pure host times the mean free path.
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics in the quantum Ising model with power-law interactions and positional disorder. For arbitrary dimension $d$ and interaction range $α\geq d$ we analytically find a stretched exponential decay of the global magnetization and ensemble-averaged single-spin purity with a stretch-power $β= d/α$ in the thermodynamic limit. Numerically, we confirm that glassy behavior persists for finite system sizes and sufficiently strong disorder. We identify dephasing between disordered coherent pairs as the main mechanism leading to a relaxation of global magnetization, wh…
A field-theoretic description of the critical behaviour of the weakly disordered systems is given. Directly, for three- and two-dimensional systems a renormalization analysis of the effective Hamiltonian of model with replica symmetry breaking (RSB) potentials is carried out in the two-loop approximation. For case with 1-step RSB the fixed points (FP's) corresponding to stability of the various types of critical behaviour are identified with the use of the Pade-Borel summation technique. Analysis of FP's has shown a stability of the critical behaviour of the weakly disordered systems with resp…
We apply support vector machine (SVM) to study the phase transition between many-body localized and thermal phases in a disordered quantum Ising chain in a transverse external field. The many-body eigenstate energy $E$ is bounded by a bandwidth $W=E_{max}-E_{min}$. The transition takes place on a phase diagram spanned by the energy density $ε=2(E-E_{min})/W$ and the disorder strength $δJ$ of the spin interaction uniformly distributed within $[-δJ, δJ]$, formally parallel to the mobility edge in Anderson localization. In our study we use the labeled probability density of eigenstate wavefunctio…
In two dimensions chaotic level-statistics is expected for massless Dirac fermions in the presence of disorder. For weakly disordered graphene flakes with zigzag edges the obtained level-spacing distribution in the Dirac region is neither chaotic (Wigner) nor localized (Poisson) but similar to that at the critical point of the Anderson metal-insulator transition. The quantum transport in finite graphene can occur via critical edge states as in topological insulators, for strong disorder the Dirac region vanishes and graphene behaves as ordinary Anderson insulator.
we investigate the thermodynamic properties of weakly anisotropic disordered magnetic chains where the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg exchange coupling is the dominant spin-spin interaction. In addition to the exchange interaction, there is single-ion anisotropy with the direction of the easy axis being the same for all spins. The analysis is carried out in the limit S >> 1, where S denotes the ionic spin, and in the temperature range T << JaveS, where Jave is the average magnitude of the exchange interaction. It is assumed that the independent boson picture is appropriate so that the thermodynam…
Disorder plays a crucial role in many systems particularly in solid state physics. However, the disorder in a particular system can usually not be chosen or controlled. We show that the unique control available for ultracold atomic gases may be used for the production and observation of disordered quantum degenerate gases. A detailed analysis of localization effects for two possible realizations of a disordered potential is presented. In a theoretical analysis clear localization effects are observed when a superlattice is used to provide a quasiperiodic disorder. The effects of localization ar…
We investigate the field-induced insulator-to-superfluid transition of bosonic quasiparticles in $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled dimer antiferromagnets. In presence of realistic disorder due to site dilution of the magnetic lattice, we show that the system displays an extended Bose-glass phase characterized by the localization of the hard-core quasiparticles.
For the three-dimensional random Ising model, the effective sextic coupling constant v_6 and the nonlinear susceptibilities of the fourth (chi_4) and sixth (chi_6) orders are calculated at criticality. These quantities are shown to differ markedly from their counterparts for pure uniaxial magnets. In particular, the ratio v_6/v_{4}^2 entering the equation of state of the random Ising model turns out to be equal to 0.87, while in pure magnets v_6/v_{4}^2 = 1.65. The universal susceptibility ratios m^3 chi_4/chi^2 and m^6 chi_6/chi^3 (m - the inverse correlation length) are found to differ by fa…
We present a stochastic algorithm for constructing a topologically disordered (i.e., non-regular) spatial lattice with nodes of constant coordination number, the CC lattice. The construction procedure dramatically improves on an earlier proposal [Phys. Rev. E. 97, 022144 (2018)] with respect to both computational complexity and finite-size scaling properties - making the CC lattice an alternative to proximity graphs which, especially in higher dimensions, is significantly faster to build. Among other applications, physical systems such as certain amorphous materials with low concentration of c…
We discuss universal and non-universal critical exponents of a three dimensional Ising system in the presence of weak quenched disorder. Both experimental, computational, and theoretical results are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the results obtained by the field theoretical renormalization group approach. Different renormalization schemes are considered putting emphasis on analysis of divergent series obtained.
The dynamics of a disordered nonlinear chain can be either regular or chaotic with a certain probability. The chaotic behavior is often associated with the destruction of Anderson localization by the nonlinearity. In the presentwork it is argued that at weak nonlinearity chaos is nucleated locally on rare resonant segments of the chain. Based on this picture, the probability of chaos is evaluated analytically. The same probability is also evaluated by direct numerical sampling of disorder realizations and quantitative agreement between the two results is found.
We study localization properties of disordered bosons and spins in random fields at zero temperature. We focus on two representatives of different symmetry classes, hard-core bosons (XY magnets) and Ising magnets in random transverse fields, and contrast their physical properties. We describe localization properties using a locator expansion on general lattices. For 1d Ising chains, we find non-analytic behavior of the localization length as a function of energy at ω= 0, $ξ^{-1}(ω) = ξ^{-1}(0) + A |ω|^α$, with $α$ vanishing at criticality. This contrasts with the much smoother behavior predict…
In the present paper we discuss the rich phase diagram of S=1/2 weakly coupled dimer systems with site dilution as a function of an applied uniform magnetic field. Performing quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a site-diluted bilayer system, we find a sequence of three distinct quantum-disordered phases induced by the field. Such phases divide a doping-induced order-by-disorder phase at low fields from a field-induced ordered phase at intermediate fields. The three quantum disordered phases are: a gapless disordered-free-moment phase, a gapped plateau phase, and two gapless Bose-glass phases. E…
The Brillouin zone of the clean Weyl semimetal contains points at which the density of states (DoS) vanishes. Previous work suggested that below a certain critical concentration of impurities this features is preserved including in the presence of disorder. This result got criticized for its neglect of rare disorder fluctuations which might bind quantum states and hence generate a finite DoS. We here show that in spite of their existence these states are so fragile that their contribution effectively vanishes when averaged over continuous disorder distributions. This means that the integrity o…
It was realized two decades ago that the two-dimensional diffusive Fermi liquid phase is unstable against arbitrarily weak electron-electron interactions. Recently, using the nonlinear sigma model developed by Finkelstein, several authors have shown that the instability leads to a ferromagnetic state. In this paper, we consider diffusing electrons interacting through a ferromagnetic exchange interaction. Using the Hartree-Fock approximation to directly calculate the electron self energy, we find that the total energy is minimized by a finite ferromagnetic moment for arbitrarily weak interactio…
