We study the low temperature out of equilibrium Monte Carlo dynamics of the disordered Ising $p$-spin Model with $p=3$ and a small number of spin variables. We focus on sequences of configurations that are stable against single spin flips obtained by instantaneous gradient descent from persistent ones. We analyze the statistics of energy gaps, energy barriers and trapping times on sub-sequences such that the overlap between consecutive configurations does not overcome a threshold. We compare our results to the predictions of various trap models finding the best agreement with the step model when the $p$-spin configurations are constrained to be uncorrelated.
We study the dynamic and metastable properties of the fully connected Ising $p$-spin model with finite number of variables. We define trapping energies, trapping times and self correlation functions and we analyse their statistical properties in comparison to the predictions of trap models.
The conventional single-particle Monte Carlo simulation of charge transport in disordered media is based on the truncated density of localized states (DOLS) which benefits from very short time execution. Although this model successfully clarifies the properties of electron transport in moderately disordered media, it overestimates the electron diffusion coefficient for strongly disordered media. The origin of this deviation is discussed in terms of zero-temperature approximation in the truncated DOLS and the ignorance of spatial occupation of localized states. Here, based on the multiple-trapp…
We investigate numerically and experimentally the influence of coupling disorder on the self-trapping dynamics in nonlinear one-dimensional optical waveguide arrays. The existence of a lower and upper bound of the effective average propagation constant allows for a generalized definition of the threshold power for the onset of soliton localization. When compared to perfectly ordered systems, this threshold is found to decrease in the presence of coupling disorder.
Dynamics of solitons of the Ablowitz-Ladik model in the presence of a random potential is studied. In absence of the random potential it is an integrable model and the solitons are stable. As a result of the random potential this stability is destroyed. In some regime, for short times particle-like dynamics with constant mass is found. There is another regime, where particle-like dynamics with varying mass takes place. In particular an effective potential is found. It predicts correctly changes in the direction of motion of the soliton. This potential is a scaling function of time and strength…
Diverse processes--e.g. bioremediation, biofertilization, and microbial drug delivery--rely on bacterial migration in disordered, three-dimensional (3D) porous media. However, how pore-scale confinement alters bacterial motility is unknown due to the opacity of typical 3D media. As a result, models of migration are limited and often employ ad hoc assumptions. Here we reveal that the paradigm of run-and-tumble motility is dramatically altered in a porous medium. By directly visualizing individual Escherichia coli, we find that the cells are intermittently and transiently trapped as they navigat…
We present a unified understanding of the experimentally observed minimal dc conductivity in weakly disordered graphene. Firstly, based on linear response theory, we reveal that randomness or disorder inevitably induces momentum dependent corrections to the electron self-energy function, which naturally yields a sample-dependent minimal conductivity. Taking the long-ranged Gaussian and Coulomb potentials as examples, we derive the momentum dependent self-energy function within the Born approximation, and further validate it via numerical simulations using the large-scale Lanczos algorithm. The…
We introduce a non-disordered lattice spin model, based on the principle of minimizing spin-spin correlations up to a (tunable) distance R. The model can be defined in any spatial dimension D, but already for D=1 and small values of R (e.g. R=5) the model shows the properties of a glassy system: deep and well separated energy minima, very slow relaxation dynamics, aging and non-trivial fluctuation-dissipation ratio.
Observations of center of mass dynamics offer a straightforward method to identify strongly interacting quantum phases of atoms placed in optical lattices. We theoretically study the dynamics of states derived from the disordered Bose-Hubbard model in a trapping potential. We find that the edge states in the trap allow center of mass motion even with insulating states in the center. We identify short and long-time scale mechanisms for edge state transport in insulating phases. We also argue that the center of mass velocity can aid in identifying a Bose-glass phase. Our zero temperature results…
The low-temperature thermal and transport properties of an unusual kind of crystal exhibiting minimal molecular positional and tilting disorder have been measured. The material, namely, low-dimensional, highly anisotropic pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB) has a layered structure of rhombohedral parallel planes in which the molecules execute large-amplitude in-plane as well as concurrent out-of-plane librational motions. Our study reveals that low-temperature glassy anomalies can be found in a system with minimal disorder due to the freezing of (mostly in-plane) reorientational jumps of molecules …
We discuss the stochastic mean-field theory (SMFT) method which is a new approach for describing disordered Bose systems in the thermodynamic limit including localization and dimensional effects. We explicate the method in detail and apply it to the disordered Bose-Hubbard model at finite temperature, with on-site box disorder, as well as experimentally relevant unbounded speckle disorder. We find that disorder-induced condensation and reentrant behavior at constant filling are only possible at low temperatures, beyond the reach of current experiments [Pasienski et al., arXiv:0908.1182]. Transmission distribution, P(\ln T), of 1D disordered chain: low-T tail
We consider the complexity of random ferromagnetic landscapes on the hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^N$ given by Ising models on the complete graph with i.i.d. non-negative edge-weights. This includes, in particular, the case of Bernoulli disorder corresponding to the Ising model on a dense random graph $\mathcal G(N,p)$. Previous results had shown that, with high probability as $N\to\infty$, the gradient search (energy-lowering) algorithm, initialized uniformly at random, converges to one of the homogeneous global minima (all-plus or all-minus). Here, we devise two modified algorithms tailored to explor…
Aging is a ubiquitous relaxation dynamic in disordered materials. It ensues after a rapid quench from an equilibrium "fluid" state into a non-equilibrium, history-dependent jammed state. We propose a physically motivated description that contrasts sharply with a continuous-time random walk (CTRW) with broadly distributed trapping times commonly used to fit aging data. A renewal process like CTRW proves irreconcilable with the log-Poisson statistic exhibited, for example, by jammed colloids as well as by disordered magnets. A log-Poisson process is characteristic of the intermittent and deceler…
The dependence of two-level systems in disordered atomic chain on pressure, both positive and negative was studied numerically. The disorder was produced through the use of interatomic pair potentials having more than one energy minimum. It was found that there exists a correlation between the energy separation of the minima of two-level systems Delta and the variation of this separation with pressure. The correlation may have either positive or negative sign, implying that the asymmetry of two-level systems may in average increase or decrease with pressure depending on the interplay of differ…
We show that the numerical strong disorder renormalization group algorithm (SDRG) of Hikihara et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 60, 12116 (1999)] for the one-dimensional disordered Heisenberg model naturally describes a tree tensor network (TTN) with an irregular structure defined by the strength of the couplings. Employing the holographic interpretation of the TTN in Hilbert space, we compute expectation values, correlation functions and the entanglement entropy using the geometrical properties of the TTN. We find that the disorder averaged spin-spin correlation scales with the average path length throug…
