We report results of a Wang-Landau study of the random bond square Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nn}/J_{nnn}=1$ for which the competitive nature of interactions produces a sublattice ordering known as superantiferromagnetism and the pure system undergoes a second-order transition with a positive specific heat exponent $α$. For a particular disorder strength we study the effects of bond randomness and we find that, while the critical exponents of the correlation length $ν$, magnetization $β$, and magnetic susceptibility $γ$ increase when compared to the pure model, the ratios $β/ν$ and $γ/ν$ remain unchanged. Thus, the disordered system obeys weak universality and hyperscaling similarly to other two-dimensional disordered systems. However, the specific heat exhibits an unusually strong saturating behavior which distinguishes the present case of competing interactions from other two-dimensional random bond systems studied previously.
The effects of bond randomness on the phase diagram and critical behavior of the square lattice ferromagnetic Blume-Capel model are discussed. The system is studied in both the pure and disordered versions by the same efficient two-stage Wang-Landau method for many values of the crystal field, restricted here in the second-order phase transition regime of the pure model. For the random-bond version several disorder strengths are considered. We present phase diagram points of both pure and random versions and for a particular disorder strength we locate the emergence of the enhancement of ferro…
We study the pure and random-bond versions of the square lattice ferromagnetic Blume-Capel model, in both the first-order and second-order phase transition regimes of the pure model. Phase transition temperatures, thermal and magnetic critical exponents are determined for lattice sizes in the range L=20-100 via a sophisticated two-stage numerical strategy of entropic sampling in dominant energy subspaces, using mainly the Wang-Landau algorithm. The second-order phase transition, emerging under random bonds from the second-order regime of the pure model, has the same values of critical exponent…
We implement a two-stage approach of the Wang-Landau algorithm to investigate the critical properties of the 3D Ising model with quenched bond randomness. In particular, we consider the case where disorder couples to the nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interaction, in terms of a bimodal distribution of strong versus weak bonds. Our simulations are carried out for large ensembles of disorder realizations and lattices with linear sizes $L$ in the range $L=8-64$. We apply well-established finite-size scaling techniques and concepts from the scaling theory of disordered systems to describe the natu…
We propose a method for Monte Carlo simulation of statistical physical models with discretized energy. The method is based on several ideas including the cluster algorithm, the multicanonical Monte Carlo method and its acceleration proposed recently by Wang and Landau. As in the multibondic ensemble method proposed by Janke and Kappler, the present algorithm performs a random walk in the space of the bond population to yield the state density as a function of the bond number. A test on the Ising model shows that the number of Monte Carlo sweeps required of the present method for obtaining the …
We apply numerical simulations to study the criticality of the 3D Ising model with random site quenched dilution. The emphasis is given to the issues not being discussed in detail before. In particular, we attempt a comparison of different Monte Carlo techniques, discussing regions of their applicability and advantages/disadvantages depending on the aim of a particular simulation set. Moreover, besides evaluation of the critical indices we estimate the universal ratio $Γ^+/Γ^-$ for the magnetic susceptibility critical amplitudes. Our estimate $Γ^+/Γ^- = 1.67 \pm 0.15$ is in a good agreement wi…
We show that linear congruential pseudo-random-number generators can cause systematic errors in Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang algorithm, if the lattice size is a multiple of a very large power of 2 and one random number is used per bond. These systematic errors arise from correlations within a single bond-update half-sweep. The errors can be eliminated (or at least radically reduced) by updating the bonds in a random order or in an aperiodic manner. It also helps to use a generator of large modulus (e.g. 60 or more bits).
Using a Wang-Landau entropic sampling scheme, we investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on a particular case of a triangular Ising model with nearest- ($J_{nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{nnn}$) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case $R=J_{nnn}/J_{nn}=1$, for which the pure model is known to have a columnar ground state where rows of nearest-neighbor spins up and down alternate and undergoes a weak first-order phase transition from the ordered to the paramagnetic state. With the introduction of quenched bond randomness we observe the effects signaling the expect…
Critical properties of lattice gases with nearest-neighbor exclusion are investigated via the adaptive-window Wang-Landau algorithm on the square and simple cubic lattices, for which the model is known to exhibit an Ising-like phase transition. We study the particle density, order parameter, compressibility, Binder cumulant and susceptibility. Our results show that it is possible to estimate critical exponents using Wang-Landau sampling with adaptive windows. Finite-size-scaling analysis leads to results in fair agreement with exact values (in two dimensions) and numerical estimates (in three …
We report on large-scale Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulations of the critical behavior of two spin models in two- (2d) and three-dimensions (3d), namely the 2d random-bond Ising model and the pure 3d Blume-Capel model at zero crystal-field coupling. The numerical data we obtain and the relevant finite-size scaling analysis provide clear answers regarding the universality aspects of both models. In particular, for the random-bond case of the 2d Ising model the theoretically predicted strong universality's hypothesis is verified, whereas for the second-order regime of the Blume-Capel model, the e…
We study bond percolation on the simple cubic (SC) lattice with various combinations of first, second, third, and fourth nearest-neighbors by Monte Carlo simulation. Using a single-cluster growth algorithm, we find precise values of the bond thresholds. Correlations between percolation thresholds and lattice properties are discussed, and our results show that the percolation thresholds of these and other three-dimensional lattices decrease monotonically with the coordination number $z$ quite accurately according to a power law $p_{c} \sim z^{-a}$, with exponent $a = 1.111$. However, for large …
We investigate and contrast, via the Wang-Landau (WL) algorithm, the effects of quenched bond randomness on the self-averaging properties of two Ising spin models in 2d. The random bond version of the superantiferromagnetic (SAF) square model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor competing interactions and the corresponding version of the simple ferromagnetic Ising model are studied. We find that, the random bond SAF model shows a strong violation of self-averaging, much stronger than that observed in the case of the random bond Ising model. Our analysis of the asymptotic scaling behavior of…
We investigate and contrast, via entropic sampling based on the Wang-Landau algorithm, the effects of quenched bond randomness on the critical behavior of two Ising spin models in 2D. The random bond version of the superantiferromagnetic (SAF) square model with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor competing interactions and the corresponding version of the simple Ising model are studied and their general universality aspects are inspected by a detailed finite-size scaling (FSS) analysis. We find that, the random bond SAF model obeys weak universality, hyperscaling, and exhibits a strong saturati…
We study bond percolation on several four-dimensional (4D) lattices, including the simple (hyper) cubic (SC), the SC with combinations of nearest neighbors and second nearest neighbors (SC-NN+2NN), the body-centered cubic (BCC), and the face-centered cubic (FCC) lattices, using an efficient single-cluster growth algorithm. For the SC lattice, we find $p_c = 0.1601312(2)$, which confirms previous results (based on other methods), and find a new value $p_c=0.035827(1)$ for the SC-NN+2NN lattice, which was not studied previously for bond percolation. For the 4D BCC and FCC lattices, we obtain $p_…
We investigate bond- and site-percolation models on several two-dimensional lattices numerically, by means of transfer-matrix calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The lattices include the square, triangular, honeycomb kagome and diced lattices with nearest-neighbor bonds, and the square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor bonds. Results are presented for the bond-percolation thresholds of the kagome and diced lattices, and the site-percolation thresholds of the square, honeycomb and diced lattices. We also include the bond- and site-percolation thresholds for the square lattic…
The random-bond XY spin glass with ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interactions is studied on a square lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. We find strong evidence for a finite-temperature spin glass transition at $T_c\approx 1.1$. We also give estimates for the spin glass critical exponents for different values of the strength of the nearest-neighbour interaction. Our results are consistent with universal behaviour.
The dynamical structure factor of the S=1/2 bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction in magnetic field is investigated using the continued fraction method based on the Lanczos algorithm. When the plateau exists on the magnetization curve, the longitudinal dynamical structure factor shows a large intensity with a periodic dispersion relation, while the transverse one shows a large intensity with an almost dispersionless mode. The periodicity and the amplitude of the dispersion relation in the longitudinal dynamical structure factor are sensitive to the coupling const…
The self-dual random-bond eight-state Potts model is studied numerically through large-scale Monte Carlo simulations using the Swendsen-Wang cluster flipping algorithm. We compute bulk and surface order parameters and susceptibilities and deduce the corresponding critical exponents at the random fixed point using standard finite-size scaling techniques. The scaling laws are suitably satisfied. We find that a belonging of the model to the 2D Ising model universality class can be conclusively ruled out, and the dimensions of the relevant bulk and surface scaling fields are found to take the valu…
The effects of bond randomness on the ground-state structure, phase diagram and critical behavior of the square lattice ferromagnetic Blume-Capel (BC) model are discussed. The calculation of ground states at strong disorder and large values of the crystal field is carried out by mapping the system onto a network and we search for a minimum cut by a maximum flow method. In finite temperatures the system is studied by an efficient two-stage Wang-Landau (WL) method for several values of the crystal field, including both the first- and second-order phase transition regimes of the pure model. We at…
We determine the optimal scaling of local-update flat-histogram methods with system size by using a perfect flat-histogram scheme based on the exact density of states of 2D Ising models. The typical tunneling time needed to sample the entire bandwidth does not scale with the number of spins N as the minimal N^2 of an unbiased random walk in energy space. While the scaling is power law for the ferromagnetic and fully frustrated Ising model, for the +/- J nearest-neighbor spin glass the distribution of tunneling times is governed by a fat-tailed Frechet extremal value distribution that obeys expo…
Monte Carlo cluster algorithms are popular for their efficiency in studying the Ising model near its critical temperature. We might expect that this efficiency extends to the bond-diluted Ising model. We show, however, that this is not always the case by comparing how the correlation times $τ_w$ and $τ_{\rm sw}$ of the Wolff and Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithms scale as a function of the system size $L$ when applied to the two-dimensional bond-diluted Ising model. We demonstrate that the Wolff algorithm suffers from a much longer correlation time than in the pure Ising model, caused by isolate…
A macroscopically constrained Wang-Landau Monte Carlo method was recently proposed to calculate the joint density of states (DOS) for systems with multiple order parameters. Here we demonstrate results for a nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic long-range interactions (a model spin-crossover material). Its two relevant order parameters are the magnetization $M$ and the staggered magnetization $M_{\rm s}$. The joint DOS, $g(E,M,M_{\rm s})$ where $E$ is the total system energy, is calculated for zero external field and long-range interaction strength, and then obtained for a…
We present a study of site and bond percolation on periodic lattices with 3 nearest neighbors per site. We have considered 3 lattices, with different symmetries, different underlying Bravais lattices, and different degrees of longer-range connections. As expected, we find that the site and bond percolation thresholds in all of the 3-connected lattices studied here are significantly higher than in diamond. Interestingly, thresholds for different lattices are similar to within a few percent, despite the differences between the lattices at scales beyond nearest and next-nearest neighbors.
We investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on the critical properties of the two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model embedded in a triangular lattice. The system is studied in both the pure and disordered versions by the same efficient two-stage Wang-Landau method. In the first part of our study we present the finite-size scaling behavior of the pure model, for which we calculate the critical amplitude of the specific heat's logarithmic expansion. For the disordered system, the numerical data and the relevant detailed finite-size scaling analysis along the lines of the two well-k…
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain consisting of spins with magnitude $\frac12$. The nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively, and induce strong frustration. Both these interactions involve the bond alternation. We find exact solutions for all the degenerate ground states on the phase boundary of the ferromagnetic phase. The degeneracy remains irrespective of two parameters representing the bond alternation. The exact solutions are of closed forms for no bond alternation and of recursion formulae in genera…
We use numerical linked cluster expansions to study thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising, XY, and Heisenberg models with bimodal random-bond disorder on the square and honeycomb lattices. In all cases, the nearest-neighbor coupling between the spins takes values $\pm J$ with equal probability. We obtain the disorder averaged (over all disorder configurations) energy, entropy, specific heat, and uniform magnetic susceptibility in each case. These results are compared with the corresponding ones in the clean models. Analytic expressions are obtained for low orders in th…
We estimated the residual entropy of ice Ih by the recently developed simulation protocol, namely, the combination of Replica-Exchange Wang-Landau algorithm and Multicanonical Replica-Exchange Method. We employed a model with the nearest neighbor interactions on the three-dimensional hexagonal lattice, which satisfied the ice rules in the ground state. The results showed that our estimate of the residual entropy is found to be within 0.038 % of series expansion estimate by Nagle and within 0.000077 % of PEPS algorithm by Vanderstraeten. In this article, we not only give our latest estimate of …
We present a method for estimating the density of states of a classical statistical model. The algorithm successfully combines the Wang-Landau flat histogram method with the N-fold way in order to improve efficiency of the original single spin flip version. We test our implementation of the Wang-Landau method with the two-dimensional nearest neighbor Ising model for which we determine the tunneling time and the density of states. Furthermore, we show that our new algorithm performs correctly at right edges of an energy interval over which the density of states is computed. This removes a disad…
A bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model is used to simulate Kauzmann's mechanism of vitrification in liquids, by a Glauber Monte Carlo simulation. The rearrangement of configurations is achieved by allowing impurity bonds to hop to nearest neighbors at the same rate as the spins flip. For slow cooling, the theoretical minimum energy configuration is approached, characterized by an amorphous distribution of locally optimally arranged impurity bonds. Rapid cooling to low temperatures regularly finds bond configurations of higher energy, which are both a priori rare and severely restrictive…
Star polymer is a typical nonlinear macromolecule possessing special thermodynamic behaviors for the existence of a jointing point. The thermodynamic transitions of a single star polymer are systematically studied with bond fluctuation model using Wang-Landau sampling technique. A new analysis method applying the shape factor is proposed to determine coil-globule (CG) and liquid-crystal (LC) transitions, which shows higher efficiency and precision than canonical specific heat function. It is found that the LC transition of star polymer at lower temperature obeys the identical scaling law as li…
We use Monte Carlo (MC) methods to simulate a two-dimensional (2D) bond-diluted Ising model on the square lattice which has frustration between the nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and the next-nearest-neighbor interaction J2. In this paper, we use the parallel tempering algorithm to study the thermodynamics for different diluted ratio x and give the phase diagram. The presence of both frustration and disorder results in a spin-glass phase, which exists between the stripe antiferromagnetic phase and the Neel phase. We present the ground-state energy of T -> 0 and the size-dependence of Edwards-…
We introduce a rejection-free, flat histogram, cluster algorithm to determine the density of states of hard-core lattice gases. We show that the algorithm is able to efficiently sample low entropy states that are usually difficult to access, even when the excluded volume per particle is large. The algorithm is based on simultaneously evaporating all the particles in a strip and reoccupying these sites with a new appropriately chosen configuration. We implement the algorithm for the particular case of the hard-core lattice gas in which the first k next-nearest neighbors of a particle are exclud…
We study a two-dimensional kinetic Ising model with Swendsen-Wang dynamics, replacing the usual percolation on top of Ising clusters by explosive percolation. The model exhibits a reversible first-order phase transition with hysteresis. Surprisingly, at the transition flanks the global bond density seems to be equal to the percolation thresholds.
Recent studies have revealed that the randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state is stabilized in certain frustrated quantum magnets in two and three dimensions. In order to clarify the nature of this gapless QSL-like state, we investigate both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the random-bond one-dimensional (1D) $s=12$ Heisenberg model with the competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by means of the exact diagonalization, density-matrix renormalization-group and Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that, on increa…
Employing a method of exact diagonalization for finite-size systems, we investigate the magnetization curve in the ground state of an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 ladder with additional exchange interactions on diagonal bonds, which is equivalent to an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain with bond-alternating nearest-neighbor and uniform next-nearest-neighbor interactions. It is found that a half-plateau appears in the magnetization curve in a certain range of the interaction constants. This result is discussed in connection with the necessary condition for the appearance of the plateau, recently g…
Phase diagrams of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with a nearest neighbor interaction $V$ and site-off-diagonal (bond-charge $X$ and bond-bond $W$) interactions at half-filling are obtained numerically, using the level-crossing approach for finite-size clusters. This analysis is straightforward extension of the preceding work [cond-mat/9909277], where only the $X$ term is considered as a site-off-diagonal term. Similarly to the $X$ term, the $W$ term enlarges bond-charge-density-wave (BCDW) and bond-spin-density-wave (BSDW) phases for $W<0$ and $W>0$ cases, respectively. In the stro…
We study rigidity percolation transitions in two-dimensional central-force isostatic lattices, including the square and the kagome lattices, as next-nearest-neighbor bonds ("braces") are randomly added to the system. In particular, we focus on the differences between regular lattices, which are perfectly periodic, and generic lattices with the same topology of bonds but whose sites are at random positions in space. We find that the regular square and kagome lattices exhibit a rigidity percolation transition when the number of braces is $\sim L\ln L$, where $L$ is the linear size of the lattice…
We study simple lattice systems to demonstrate the influence of interpenetrating bond networks on phase behavior. We promote interpenetration by using a Hamiltonian with a weakly repulsive interaction with nearest neighbors and an attractive interaction with second-nearest neighbors. In this way, bond networks will form between second-nearest neighbors, allowing for two (locally) distinct networks to form. We obtain the phase behavior from analytic solution in the mean-field approximation and exact solution on the Bethe lattice. We compare these results with exact numerical results for the pha…
We present phase diagrams, free-energy landscapes, and order-parameter distributions for a model spin-crossover material with a two-step transition between the high-spin and low-spin states (a square-lattice Ising model with antiferromagnetic-like nearest-neighbor and ferromagnetic-like long-range interactions) [P. A. Rikvold et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 064109 (2016)]. The results are obtained by a recently introduced, macroscopically constrained Wang-Landau Monte Carlo simulation method [C. H. Chan, G. Brown, and P. A. Rikvold, Phys. Rev. E 95, 053302 (2017)]. The method's computational efficien…
