We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain consisting of spins with magnitude $\frac12$. The nearest-neighbor and the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, respectively, and induce strong frustration. Both these interactions involve the bond alternation. We find exact solutions for all the degenerate ground states on the phase boundary of the ferromagnetic phase. The degeneracy remains irrespective of two parameters representing the bond alternation. The exact solutions are of closed forms for no bond alternation and of recursion formulae in general. The exact solutions are applicable to the $Δ$ chain as a special case.
Bond-Alternation-Induced Topological Quantum Gaussian Transition and Topological Quantum Crossover in Ising Chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction
The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ delta-chain (sawtooth chain) with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg basal chain and Ising apical-basal interactions is studied. The basal-apical interactions involve the bond alternation. The limiting cases of the model include the symmetrical delta-chain and the antiferromagnetic chain in the staggered magnetic field. We study ground state properties of the model by the exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. The ground state phase diagram as a function of the bond alternation consists of magnetic and various non-magnetic phases. All phases ex…
The ground-state phases of alternating-bond spin-1 diamond chains are investigated. Each ground state consists of an array of spin clusters separated by singlet dimers owing to an infinite number of local conservation laws. If no singlet dimers are present, the ground state is equivalent to that of a spin chain with infinite length. For strong frustration, we find a series of quantum phase transitions as in the case of alternating-bond mixed diamond chains with spins 1 and 1/2. For intermediate frustration, we find the nonmagnetic Haldane or dimer phases according to whether the bond alternatio…
The ground-state phases of mixed diamond chains with bond alternation $δ$, and ($S, τ^{(1)}, τ^{(2)})=(1/2,1/2,1)$, where $S$ is the magnitude of vertex spins, and $τ^{(1)}$ and $τ^{(2)}$ are those of apical spins, are investigated. The two apical spins in each unit cell are connected by an exchange coupling $λ$. The exchange couplings between the apical spins and the vertex spins take the values $1+δ$ and $1-δ$ alternatingly. This model has an infinite number of local conservation laws. For large $λ$ and $δ\neq 0$, the ground state is equivalent to that of the spin $1/2$ chain with bond alter…
The spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a ferromagnetic first-neighbor exchange coupling $J_1$ and an antiferromagnetic second-neighbor $J_2$ has a Haldane dimer ground state with an extremely small spin gap. Thus, the ground state is readily altered by perturbations. Here, we investigate the effects of XXZ exchange magnetic anisotropy of both the easy-axis and easy-plane types and an alternation in $J_1$ on the ground state, the spin gap, and magnetic properties of the frustrated ferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ chain. It is found that there are two distinct dimerized spin-gap phases, in one of which th…
A recent density functional theory (DFT) based analysis, complemented with Quantum Monte Carlo calculations revealed a highly spin-frustrating nature of the one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ compound $Cs_2CuAl_4O_8$ that comprises of unique bond alternations and relatively strong next nearest neighbor interactions. This article gives a brief account on possible magnon excitations that can appear in the ground state of such systems. We find that the spin waves obtained on top of coplanar helical reference states show multiple magnon modes (both acoustic and optical). However, those magnon mode…
In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and ma…
We theoretically investigate spin-lattice coupling (SLC) effects on the in-field ordering properties of classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. Here, we use the two possible simplified models describing the effect of local lattice distortions on the spin ordering via the SLC, the bond-phonon and site-phonon models. It is found by means of Monte Carlo simulations that in both models, the $\frac{1}{2}$ plateau shows up in the magnetization curve being relatively robust against the breathing bond-alternation, although magnetic long-range orders (LRO's) are reali…
We show that classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing kagome lattice can be a platform to realize a zero-field topological order of the scalar spin chirality which can be viewed as a miniature skyrmion crystal (SkX) of discrete form with a small number of spins in its magnetic unit cell. In the model, a third nearest-neighbor (NN) antiferromagnetic interaction along the bond direction $J_3$ and the breathing bond-alternation characterized by the ratio of the NN interaction for large triangles to that for small ones, $J_1'/J_1$, are essential. It is found by means of Monte Carlo s…
The hedgehog lattice, a three-dimensional periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, is known to be realized in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Here, we demonstrate by means of Monte Carlo simulations that the hedgehog lattice is induced by not the DM interaction but frustration in classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the breathing pyrochlore lattice. In the model, the breathing bond-alternation is characterized by the ratio of the nearest-neighbor (NN) antiferromagnetic exchange interaction for large tetrahedra to that for small ones, J1'/J1. A qua…
We propose resonating valence bond wave functions for a spin-1 system on the torus that realize a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. The wave functions take the form of infinite dimensional matrix product states constructed from conformal blocks of the $\mathrm{SO}(3)_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This means that they are lattice analogues of the bosonic Moore-Read state introduced in fractional quantum Hall systems. The topological order of this system is revealed by explicit construction of three-fold degenerate ground states and analytical computation of the modular S and T matrices.
The spin-$1/2$ chain with antiferromagnetic exchange $J_1$ and $J_2 = αJ_1$ between first and second neighbors, respectively, has both gapless and gapped ($Δ(α) > 0$) quantum phases at frustration $0 \le α\le 3/4$. The ground state instability of regular ($δ= 0$) chains to dimerization ($δ> 0$) drives a spin-Peierls transition at $T_{SP}(α)$ that varies with $α$ in these strongly correlated systems. The thermodynamic limit of correlated states is obtained by exact treatment of short chains followed by density matrix renormalization calculations of progressively longer chains. The doubly degene…
