We show that all $p$-adic quintic forms in at least $n>4562911$ variables have a non-trivial zero. We also derive new result concerning systems of cubic and quadratic forms.
We classify all the zeros and non-zero values of a family of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting. These values of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting lead to transformations of hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting which can be described as $p$-adic analogues of Kummer's and Pfaff's linear transformations on classical hypergeometric series. We also evaluate certain summation identities for hypergeometric series in the $p$-adic setting as well as Gaussian hypergeometric series.
It is shown that a quintic form over a p-adic field with at least 26 variables has a non-trivial zero, providing that the cardinality of the residue class field exceeds 9.
This survey describes work on the number of variables required to ensure that a system of r quadratic forms over the p-adics has a non-trivial common zero.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the trivial zeros of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions by the CM congruence. We prove the existence of trivial zeros of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions for general CM fields and establish a first derivative formula of the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions at trivial zeros under some Leopoldt hypothesis. The crucial ingredients in our proof are a special case of $p$-adic Kronecker limit formula for CM fields and a leading term formula of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions at trivial zeros via the explicit congruences between CM and non-CM Hida families o…
We formulate a conjecture about extra zeros of p-adic L-functions at near central points which generalises the conjecture formulated in our previous paper. We prove that this conjecture is compatible with Perrin-Riou's theory of p-adic L-functions.
It is shown that a system of $r$ quadratic forms over a ${\mathfrak p}$-adic field has a non-trivial common zero as soon as the number of variables exceeds $4r$, providing that the residue class field has cardinality at least $(2r)^r$.
A variant of Brauer's induction method is developed. It is shown that quartic p-adic forms with at least 9127 variables have non-trivial zeros, for every p. For odd p considerably fewer variables are needed. There are also subsidiary new results concerning quintic forms, and systems of forms.
Let A be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real field F, and let E/F be a totally imaginary quadratic extension. In the event of exceptional zero phenomenon, we prove a formula for the derivative of the multivariable anticyclotomic p-adic L-function attached to (A,E), in terms of the Hasse-Weil L-function and certain p-adic periods attached to the respective automorphic forms. Our methods are based on a new construction of the anticyclotomic p-adic L-function by means of the corresponding automorphic representation.
We prove a version of the Extra-zero conjecture formulated by the first named author for p-adic L-functions associated to Rankin-Selberg convolutions of modular forms of the same weight. The novelty of this result is to provide strong evidence in support of this conjecture in the non-critical case, which remained essentially unstudied.
This is an exposition of work on Artin's Conjecture on the zeros of $p$-adic forms. A variety of lines of attack are described, going back to 1945. However there is particular emphasis on recent developments concerning quartic forms on the one hand, and systems of quadratic forms on the other.
Using the $\scr L$-invariant constructed in our previous paper we prove a Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum style formula for derivatives of p-adic L-functions of elliptic modular forms at near central points. In the second version of the paper the case of potentially crystalline reduction is also covered.
Let $E$ be a modular elliptic curve over a totally real number field $F$. We prove the weak exceptional zero conjecture which links a (higher) derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $E$ to certain $p$-adic periods attached to the corresponding Hilbert modular form at the places above $p$ where $E$ has split multiplicative reduction. Under some mild restrictions on $p$ and the conductor of $E$ we deduce the exceptional zero conjecture in the strong form (i.e.\ where the automorphic $p$-adic periods are replaced by the $\cL$-invariants of $E$ defined in terms of Tate periods) from a…
We prove a strong form of the trivial zero conjecture at the central point for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a non-critically refined self-dual cohomological cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a totally real field, which is Iwahori spherical at places above $p$. In the case of a simple zero we adapt the approach of Greenberg and Stevens, based on the functional equation for the $p$-adic $L$-function of a nearly finite slope family and on improved $p$-adic $L$-functions that we construct using automorphic symbols and overconvergent cohomology. For higher order zeros we d…
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $\mathbb{F}_p$ be the finite field with $p$ elements. This paper focuses on the study of values of a generic family of hypergeometric functions in the $p$-adic setting which we denote by ${_{3n-1}G_{3n-1}}(p, t),$ where $n\geq1$ and $t\in\mathbb{F}_p$. These values are expressed in terms of numbers of zeros of certain polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$. These results lead to certain $p$-adic analogues of classical hypergeometric identities. Namely, we obtain $p$-adic analogues of particular cases of a Gauss' theorem and a Kummer's theorem. Moreover, we examine the zero…
The primary goal of this article is to study $p$-adic Beilinson conjectures in the presence of exceptional zeros for Artin motives over CM fields. In more precise terms, we address a question raised by Hida and Tilouine on the order of vanishing of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to CM fields, by means of a leading term formula we prove in terms of Rubin-Stark elements. In the particular case when the CM field in question is imaginary quadratic, our leading term formula and its consequences we record herein are unconditional.
Let F be a number field, p a prime number. We construct the (multi-variable) p-adic L-function of an automorphic representation of $GL_2(A_F)$ (with certain conditions at places above p and $\infty$), which interpolates the complex L-function at the central critical point. We use this construction to prove that the p-adic L-function of a modular elliptic curve E over F has vanishing order greater or equal to the number of primes above p at which E has split multiplicative reduction, as predicted by the exceptional zero conjecture. This is a generalization of analogous results by Spieß (arXiv:1…
For a fixed prime $p$, let $\mathbb C_p$ denote the complex $p$-adic numbers. For polynomials $A,B\in \mathbb C_p[x]$ we consider decompositions $A(x)f^2(x)+B(x)g^2(x)=1$ of entire functions $f,\,g$ on $\mathbb C_p$ and try to improve an impossibility result due to A. Boutabaa concerning transcendental $f,g$. We also provide an independent proof of a $p$-adic diophantic statement due to D. N. Clark, which is an important ingredient of Boutabaa's method.
The rank one Gross conjecture for Deligne-Ribet $p$-adic $L$-functions was solved in works of Darmon-Dasgupta-Pollack and Ventullo by the Eisenstein congruence among Hilbert modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to prove an analogue of the Gross conjecture for the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to imaginary quadratic fields via the congruences between CM forms and non-CM forms. The new ingredient is to apply the $p$-adic Rankin-Selberg method to construct a non-CM Hida family which is congruent to a Hida family of CM forms at the $1+\varepsilon$ specialization.
Our goal in this article is to prove a form of $p$-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for the second derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function associated to a newform $f$ which is non-crystalline semistable at $p$ at its central critical point, by expressing this quantity in terms of a $p$-adic (cyclotomic) regulator defined on an extended trianguline Selmer group. We also prove a two-variable version of this result for height pairings we construct by considering infinitesimal deformations afforded by a Coleman family passing through $f$. This, among other things, leads us to a proof of an a…
The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the geometry of the $p$-adic eigencurve at a point $f$ corresponding to a weight one cuspidal theta series irregular at the prime number $p$. We show that $f$ belongs to exactly three or four irreducible components and study their intersection multiplicities. In particular, we show that the congruence ideal of a CM component has a simple zero at $f$ if and only if a certain anti-cyclotomic $\mathscr{L}$-invariant $\mathscr{L}_-(φ)$ does not vanish. Further, using Roy's Strong Six Exponential Theorem we show that at least one amongst $\mathscr{L}…
In this paper we prove a formula, much in the spirit of one due to Rubin, which expresses the leading coefficients of various p-adic L-functions in the presence of an exceptional zero in terms of Nekovar's p-adic height pairings on his extended Selmer groups. In a particular case, the Rubin-style formula we prove recovers a p-adic Kronecker limit formula. In a disjoint case, we observe that our computations with Nekovar's heights agree with the Ferrero- Greenberg formula (more generally, Gross' conjectural formula) for the leading coefficient of the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function (resp., th…
This paper aims to study the zero distribution of $v-$adic multiple zeta values over function fields. We show that the interpolated $v-$adic MZVs at negative integers only vanish at what we call the ''trivial zeros'', for degree one prime over rational function fields. And we conjecture that this result can be generalized to all primes.
We continue with our study of the non-critical exceptional zeros of Katz' $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to a CM field $K$, following two threads. In the first thread, we redefine our (group-ring-valued) $\mathcal{L}$-invariant associated to each $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-extension $K_Γ$ of $K$ in terms of $p$-adic height pairings and interpolate them as $K_Γ$ varies to a universal (multivariate) group-ring-valued $\mathcal{L}$-invariant. In the second thread, we use our results to study the exceptional zeros of the non-genuine Rankin--Selberg $p$-adic $L$-functions attached to the self-products of ne…
With every path on a projective line minus zero, one and infinity there is associated a measure. We are studying a sum of two such measures associated to paths from the tangential point at zero to roots of one. We show that the obtained measure can be defined very elementary. Integrating agaist this measure we get p-adic Hurwitz zeta functions constructed previously by Shiratani.
In this paper we construct a two variables $p$-adic $L$-function for the standard representation associated with a Hida family of parallel weight genus $g$ Siegel forms, using a method previously developed by Böcherer--Schmidt in one variable. When a form of weight $g+1$ is Steinberg at $p$, a trivial zero appears and, using the method of Greenberg--Stevens, we calculate the first derivative of this $p$-adic $L$-function and show that it has the form predicted by a conjecture of Greenberg on trivial zeros.
Let ${\mathbb Z}_p$ denote the ring of all $p$-adic integers and call $${\mathcal U}=\{(x_1,\ldots,x_n):\,a_1x_1+\ldots+a_nx_n+b=0\}$$ a hyperplane over ${\mathbb Z}_p^n$, where at least one of $a_1,\ldots,a_n$ is not divisible by $p$. We prove that if a sufficiently regular $n$-variable function is zero modulo $p^r$ over some suitable collection of $r$ hyperplanes, then it is zero modulo $p^r$ over the whole ${\mathbb Z}_p^n$. We provide various applications of this general criterion by establishing several $p$-adic analogues of hypergeometric identities.
Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$. We prove (an analogue of) a conjecture of Perrin-Riou, relating $p$-adic Beilinson$-$Kato elements to Heegner points in $A(\mathbb{Q})$, and a large part of the rank-one case of the Mazur$-$Tate$-$Teitelbaum exceptional zero conjecture for the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $A$. More generally, let $f$ be the weight-two newform associated with $A$, let $f_{\infty}$ be the Hida family of $f$, and let $L_{p}(f_{\infty},k,s)$ be the Mazur$-$Kitagawa two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $f_{\…
Let $p$ be an odd prime and $\mathbb{F}_p$ be the finite field with $p$ elements. McCarthy \cite{mccarthy-pacific} initiated a study of hypergeometric functions in the $p$-adic setting. This function can be understood as $p$-adic analogue of Gauss' hypergeometric function, and also some kind of extension of Greene's hypergeometric function over $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this paper we investigate values of two generic families of McCarthy's hypergeometric functions denoted by ${_nG_n}(t)$, and ${_n\widetilde{G}_n}(t)$ for $n\geq3$, and $t\in\mathbb{F}_p$. The values of the function ${_nG_n}(t)$ certai…
In this paper we prove a finiteness result concerning the Chow group of zero-cycles for varieties over $p$-adic local fields. In this final version, there are several corrections concerning mathematical symbols and reference to related known results.
Let $P_n(x)=\frac1{n!}\sum\binom n{2i+1}(2i+1)^x$. This extends to a continuous function on the 2-adic integers, the $n$th 2-adic partial Stirling function. We show that $(-1)^{n+1}P_n$ is the only 2-adically continuous approximation to $S(x,n)$, the Stirling number of the second kind. We present extensive information about the zeros of $P_n$, for which there are many interesting patterns. We prove that if $e\ge2$ and $2^e+1\le n\le 2^e+4$, then $P_n$ has exactly $2^{e-1}$ zeros, one in each mod $2^{e-1}$ congruence. We study the relationship between the zeros of $P_{2^e+Δ}$ and $P_Δ$, for $1\…
Let K be a complete algebraically closed p-adic field of characteristic zero. Let f, g be two transcendental meromorphic functions in the whole field K or meromorphic functions in an open disk that are not quotients of bounded analytic functions. Let P be a polynomial of uniqueness for meromorphic functions in K or in an open disk and let $α$ be a small meromorphic function with regards to f and g. If f'P'(f) and g'P'(g) share $α$ counting multiplicity, then we show that f=g provided that the multiplicity order of zeroes of P' satisfy certain inequalities. If $α$ is a Moebius function or a non…
Iwasawa theory of modular forms over anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions of imaginary quadratic fields has been studied by several authors, starting from the works of Bertolini-Darmon and Iovita-Spiess, under the crucial assumption that the prime $p$ is unramified in $K$. We start in this article the systematic study of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions when $p$ is ramified in $K$. In particular, when $f$ is a weight $2$ modular form attached to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ having multiplicative reduction at $p$, and $p$ is ramified in $K$, we show an analogue of the exceptional z…
We introduce $p$-adic Kummer spaces of continuous functions on $\mathbb{Z}_p$ that satisfy certain Kummer type congruences. We will classify these spaces and show their properties, for instance, ring properties and certain decompositions. As a result, these functions have always a fixed point, functions of certain subclasses have always a unique simple zero in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. The fixed points and the zeros are effectively computable by given algorithms. This theory can be transferred to values of Dirichlet $L$-functions at negative integer arguments. That leads to a conjecture about their stru…

We formulate and prove certain vanishing theorems for p-adic automorphic forms on unitary groups of arbitrary signature. The p-adic q-expansion principle for p-adic modular forms on the Igusa tower says that if the coefficients of (sufficiently many of) the q-expansions of a p-adic modular form f are zero, then f vanishes everywhere on the Igusa tower. There is no p-adic q-expansion principle for unitary groups of arbitrary signature in the literature. By replacing q-expansions with Serre-Tate expansions (expansions in terms of Serre-Tate deformation coordinates) and replacing modular forms wi…
We consider $p$-adic families of Siegel eigenforms of genus $2$ and finite slope, defined as local pieces of an eigenvariety and equipped with a suitable integral structure. Under some assumptions on the residual image, we show that the image of the Galois representation associated with a family is big, in the sense that a Lie algebra attached to it contains a congruence subalgebra of non-zero level. We call Galois level of the family the largest such level. We show that it is trivial when the residual representation has full image. When the residual representation is a symmetric cube, the zer…
We prove the conjectured compatibility of $p$-adic fundamental lines with specializations at motivic points for a wide class of $p$-adic families of $p$-adic Galois representations (for instance, the families which arise from $p$-adic families of automorphic representations of the unit group of a quaternion algebra or of a totally definite unitary groups) and deduce the compatibility of the Equivariant Tamagawa Number Conjectures for them. However, we also show that fundamental lines are not compatible with arbitrary characteristic zero specializations with values in a domain in general. This …
We prove that the canonical dimension of an admissible Banach space or a locally analytic representation of an arbitrary semisimple p-adic Lie group is either zero or at least half the dimension of a non-zero coadjoint orbit. This extends the results of Ardakov-Wadsley and Schmidt in the split semisimple case.
Let $χ$ be a Hecke character of finite order of a totally real number field $F$. By using Hill's Shintani cocyle we provide a cohomological construction of the $p$-adic $L$-series $L_p(χ, s)$ associated to $χ$. This is used to show that $L_p(χ, s)$ has a trivial zero at $s=0$ of order at least equal to the number of places of $F$ above $p$ where the local component of $χ$ is trivial.
We prove new congruences between special values of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions for $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$ over arbitrary number fields. This allows us to control the behavior of $p$-adic $L$-functions under Tate twists and to prove the existence of non-abelian $p$-adic $L$-functions for Hida families on $\mathrm{GL}(n+1)\times\mathrm{GL}(n)$. As an application, we prove strong non-vanishing results for central $L$-values: We give sufficient local conditions for twisted central Rankin-Selberg $L$-values to be generically non-zero.
We study Kato and Perrin-Riou's critical slope p-adic L-function attached to an ordinary modular form, using the methods of our earlier work with Lei. We show that it may be decomposed as a sum of two bounded measures multiplied by explicit distributions depending only on the local properties of the modular form at p. We use this decomposition to prove results on the zeros of the p-adic L-function, and we show that our results match the behaviour observed in examples calculated by Pollack and Stevens.
By adopting a new approach to the analysis of the density of p-adic solutions arising in applications of the circle method, we show that under modest conditions the existence of non-trivial p-adic solutions suffices to establish positivity of the singular series. This improves on earlier approaches due to Davenport, Schmidt and others, and allows us to establish an asymptotic formula for the number of simultaneous zeros of non-singular pairs of cubic forms in at least 131 variables. As a by-product, we obtain a version of Hensel's Lemma for linear spaces.
For a weight two modular form and a good prime $p$, we construct a vector of Iwasawa functions $(L_p^\sharp,L_p^\flat)$. In the elliptic curve case, we use this vector to put the $p$-adic analogues of the conjectures of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for ordinary [MTT] and supersingular [BPR] primes on one footing. Looking at $L_p^\sharp$ and $L_p^\flat$ individually leads to a stronger conjecture containing an extra zero phenomenon. We also give an explicit upper bound for the analytic rank in the cyclotomic direction and an asymptotic formula for the $p$-part of the analytic size of the Šafarevič…
We construct the three-variable p-adic triple product L-functions attached to Hida families of ellptic newforms and prove the explicit interpolation formulae at all critical specializations by establishing explicit Ichino's formulae for the trilinear period integrals of automorphic forms. Our formulae perfectly fit the conjectural shape of p-adic L-functions predicted by Coates and Perrin-Riou. As an application, we prove the factorization of certain unbalanced p-adic triple product L-functions into a product of anticyclotomic p-adic L-functions for modular forms. By this factorization, we giv…
Ming-Lun Hsieh constructed three-variable triple product p-adic L-functions attached to triples of primitive Hida families and proved interpolation formulas. We generalize his result in the unbalanced case and construct a three-variable triple product p-adic L-function attached to a primitive Hida family and two more general p-adic families of modular forms.
We reinterpret the explicit construction of Gross points given by Chida-Hsieh as a non-Archimedian analogue of the standard geodesic cycle from zero to the infinity on the Poincare upper half plane. This analogy allows us to consider certain distributions, which can be regarded as anticyclotomic p-adic L-functions for modular forms of non-critical slope following the overconvergent strategy a la Stevens. We also give a geometric interpretation of their Gross points for the case of weight two forms. Our construction generalizes those of Bertolini-Darmon, Bertolini-Darmon-Iovita-Spiess, and Chid…
The primary objective of this paper is the study of different instances of the elliptic Stark conjectures of Darmon, Lauder and Rotger, in a situation where the elliptic curve attached to the modular form $f$ has split multiplicative reduction at $p$ and the arithmetic phenomena are specially rich. For that purpose, we resort to the principle of improved $p$-adic $L$-functions and study their $\mathcal L$-invariants. We further interpret these results in terms of derived cohomology classes coming from the setting of diagonal cycles, showing that the same $\mathcal L$-invariant which arises in …
We verify a conjecture of Emil Artin, for the case of a Cubic and Quadratic form over any $p$-adic field, provided the cardinality of the residue class field exceeds 293. That is any Cubic and Quadratic form with at least 14 variables has a non-trivial $p$-adic zero, with the aforementioned condition on the residue class field. A crucial step in the proof, involves generalizing a $p$-adic minimization procedure due to W. M. Schmidt to hold for systems of forms of arbitrary degrees.
We study the relationship between recent conjectures on slopes of overconvergent p-adic modular forms "near the boundary" of p-adic weight space. We also prove in tame level 1 that the coefficients of the Fredholm series of the U_p operator never vanish modulo p, a phenomenon that fails at higher level. In higher level, we do check that infinitely many coefficients are non-zero modulo p using a modular interpretation of the mod p reduction of the Fredholm series recently discovered by Andreatta, Iovita and Pilloni.
Let p be an odd prime and F a totally real number field. Let f be a Hilbert cuspidal eigenform of parallel weight 2, trivial Nebentypus and ordinary at p. It is possible to construct a p-adic L-function which interpolates the complex L-function associated to the symmetric square representation of f. This p-adic L-function vanishes at s=1 even if the complex L-function does not. Assuming p inert and f Steinberg at p, we give a formula for the p-adic derivative at s=1 of this p-adic L-function, generalizing unpublished work of Greenberg and Tilouine. Under some hypotheses on the conductor of f w…
We prove that the canonical dimension of a coadmissible representation of a semisimple $p$-adic Lie group in a $p$-adic Banach space is either zero or at least half the dimension of a non-zero coadjoint orbit. To do this we establish analogues for $p$-adically completed enveloping algebras of Bernstein's inequality for modules over Weyl algebras, the Beilinson-Bernstein localisation theorem and Quillen's Lemma about the endomorphism ring of a simple module over an enveloping algebra.
