We present a measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S$_{1/2}$ excited level of rubidium using two photon absorption spectroscopy in a glass cell. The values we obtain for the magnetic dipole constant A are 239.18(03) MHz and 807.66(08) MHz for $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb, respectively. The combination of the magnetic moments of the two isotopes and our measurements show a hyperfine anomaly in this atomic excited state. The observed hyperfine anomaly difference has a value of $_{87}δ_{85}=-0.0036(2)$ due to the finite distribution of nuclear magnetization, the Bohr-Weisskopf effect.
We present lifetime measurements of the 7S1/2 level and the 6p manifold of rubidium. We use a timecorrelated single-photon counting technique on a sample of 85Rb atoms confined and cooled in a magneto-optic trap. The upper state of the 5P1/2 repumping transition serves as the resonant intermediate level for twophoton excitation of the 7s level. A probe laser provides the second step of the excitation, and we detect the decay of atomic fluorescence to the 5P3/2 level at 741 nm. The decay process feeds the 6p manifold that decays to the 5s ground state emitting UV photons. We measure lifetimes o…
Measurements of rubidium lifetime in a dark magneto-optical trap (DMOT) was performed at various populations of the bright and dark hyperfine states of the trapped atoms. The rubidium lifetime in the trap appeared to be shorter if the atom spent more time in the bright state. A simple explanation of this effect is based on the increase of the cross-section of rubidium collisions with the surrounding warm atoms upon rubidium electronic excitation.
Here we report on measurements of the absolute absorption and dispersion properties of an isotopically pure 87Rb vapour for magnetic fields up to and including 0.6 T. We discuss the various regimes that arise when the hyperfine and Zeeman interactions have different magnitudes, and show that we enter the hyperfine Paschen- Back regime for fields greater than 0.33 T on the Rb D2 line. The experiment uses a compact 1 mm3 microfabricated vapour cell that makes it easy to maintain a uniform and large magnetic field with a small and inexpensive magnet. We find excellent agreement between the experi…
We studied magneto-optical resonances caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field. Experimental measurements were performed on the transitions of the $D_2$ line of rubidium. These measured signals were described by a theoretical model that takes into account all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, the coherence properties of the exciting laser radiation, and the Doppler effect. Good agreement between the experimental measurements and the theoretical model could be achieved over a wide range of laser power de…
In this paper we demonstrate the detection of millimeter waves via Autler-Townes splitting in 85Rb Rydberg atoms. This method may provide an independent, atom-based, SI-traceable method for measuring mm-wave electric fields, which addresses a gap in current calibration techniques in the mm-wave regime. The electric- field amplitude within a rubidium vapor cell in the WR-10 waveguide band is measured for frequencies of 93 GHz, and 104 GHz. Relevant aspects of Autler-Townes splitting originating from a four-level electromagnetically induced transparency scheme are discussed. We measure the E-fie…
We have studied the resonance fluorescence of a room-temperature rubidium vapor exited to the atomic 5P3/2 state (D2 line) by powerful single-frequency cw laser radiation (1.25 W/cm^2) in the presence of a magnetic field. In these studies, the slow, linear scanning of the laser frequency across the hyperfine transitions of the D2 line is combined with a fast linear scanning of the applied magnetic field, which allows us to record frequency-dependent Hanle resonances from all the groups of hyperfine transitions including V- and Lambda - type systems. Rate equations were used to simulate fluores…
We studied alignment-to-orientation conversion caused by excited-state level crossings in a nonzero magnetic field of both atomic rubidium isotopes. In the experiments laser induced fluorescence (LIF) components were observed at linearly p…
I searched for the ground state 6.8 and 9.2 GHz hyperfine transitions of rubidium and cesium toward M- and L-dwarfs that show Rb and Cs optical resonance lines. The optical lines can pump the hyperfine transitions, potentially forming masers. These spin-flip transitions of Rb and Cs are the principal transitions used in atomic clocks (the $^{133}$Cs hyperfine transition defines the second). If they are detected in stellar atmospheres, these transitions would provide exceptionally precise clocks that can be used as accelerometers, as exoplanet detectors, as probes of the predictions of general …
We report on measurements on the 5S-6P rubidium transition frequencies for rubidium isotopes with an absolute uncertainty of better than \SI{450}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{1/2}$ transition and \SI{20}{kHz} for the 5S $\rightarrow$ 6P$_{3/2}$ transition, achieved by saturation absorption spectroscopy. From the results we derive the hyperfine splitting with an accuracy of \SI{460}{kHz} and \SI{30}{kHz}, respectively. We also verify the literature values for the isotope shifts as well as magnetic dipole constant and the electric quadrupole constant.
We study the Doppler-broadened absorption of a weak monochromatic probe beam in a thermal rubidium vapour cell on the D lines. A detailed model of the susceptibility is developed which takes into account the absolute linestrengths of the allowed electric dipole transitions and the motion of the atoms parallel to the probe beam. All transitions from both hyperfine levels of the ground term of both isotopes are incorporated. The absorption and refractive index as a function of frequency are expressed in terms of the complementary error function. The absolute absorption profiles are compared with…
We demonstrate subpicosecond-time-scale population transfer between the pair of hyperfine ground states of atomic rubidium using a single laser-pulse. Our scheme utilizes the geometric and dynamic phases induced during Rabi oscillation through the fine-structure excited state in order to construct an $X$ rotation gate for the hyperfine-state qubit system. Experiment performed with a femtosecond laser and cold rubidium atoms, in a magneto-optical trap, shows over 98\% maximal population transfer between the clock states.
The one-loop self-energy correction to the hyperfine structure splitting of the 1s and 2s states of hydrogenlike ions is calculated both for the point and finite nucleus. The results of the calculation are combined with other corrections to find the ground state hyperfine splitting in lithiumlike ^{209}Bi^{80+} and ^{165}Ho^{64+}.
The ground state hyperfine splitting values and the transition probabilities between the hyperfine structure components of high Z lithiumlike ions are calculated in the range $Z=49-83$. The relativistic, nuclear, QED and interelectronic interaction corrections are taken into account. It is found that the Bohr-Weisskopf effect can be eliminated in a combination of the hyperfine splitting values of the hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions of an isotope. This gives a possibility for testing the QED effects in a combination of the strong electric and magnetic fields of the heavy nucleus. Using the ex…
We perform accurate calculations of energy levels as well as fine and hyperfine splittings of the lowest $^{1,3}\!P_J$, $^{3}\!S_1$, $^{3}\!P^e_J$, and $^{1,3}\!D_J$ excited states of the $^9$Be atom using explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and report on the breakdown of the standard hyperfine structure theory. Because of the strong hyperfine mixing, which prevents the use of common hyperfine constants, we formulate a description of the fine and hyperfine structure that is valid for an arbitrary coupling strength and may have wide applications in many other atomic systems.
The effect of microwave radiation on the resonance fluorescence of a cloud of cold $^{85}Rb$ atoms in a magnetooptical trap is studied. The radiation frequency was tuned near the hyperfine splitting frequency of rubidium atoms in the 5S ground state. The microwave field induced magnetic dipole transitions between the magnetic sublevels of the 5S(F=2) and 5S(F=3) states, resulting in a change in the fluorescence signal. The resonance fluorescence spectra were recorded by tuning the microwave radiation frequency. The observed spectra were found to be substantially dependent on the transition und…
The rigorous calculation of the vacuum-polarization screening corrections to the hyperfine splitting in Li-like bismuth is presented. The two-electron diagrams with electric and magnetic vacuum-polarization loops are evaluated to all orders in alpha*Z, including the Wichmann-Kroll contributions. This improves the accuracy of the theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like bismuth.
Relativistic corrections to the hyperfine splitting are calculated for the triplet $2^3S_1$ state of the helium isotope He$^3$. High precision variational wave functions are employed, where the electron-electron correlations are well accounted for. Due to the unknown nuclear structure a comparison with the experimental result is performed via He$^{3+}$ hyperfine splitting. Surprisingly, the second order contribution due to Fermi interaction, in spite of the additional small factor $m/M$, is very significant.
In this paper we report the development of the design verification model (DVM) of Rb atomic frequency standard. The Rb atomic frequency standard or clock has two distinct parts. One is the Physics Package where the hyperfine transitions produce the clock signal in the integrated filter cell configuration and the other is the electronic circuits which generate the resonant microwave hyperfine frequency, phase modulator and phase sensitive detector. In this paper the details of the Rb Physics package and the electronic circuits are given. The effect of putting the photo detector inside the micro…
Accurate calculations of the fine and hyperfine splitting of the 2P state in Li and Be$^+$ isotopes using the explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis set are presented. Theoretical predictions including the mixing of $P_{1/2}$ and $P_{3/2}$ states, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects on hyperfine interactions, are compared with experimental values. It is concluded that precise spectroscopic determination of the nuclear magnetic moments requires elimination of nuclear structure effects by combining measurements for two different states.
Relativistic and QED corrections are calculated for the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the $2S_{1/2}$ ground state of $^{9}$Be$^+$ ions with an exact account for electronic correlations. The achieved accuracy is sufficient to determine the finite nuclear size effects from the comparison to the experimental hfs value. The obtained results establish the ground to determine the neutron halo in $^{11}$Be.
The current status of the determination of corrections to the hyperfine splitting of the ground state in hydrogen is considered. Improved calculations are provided taking into account the most recent value for the proton charge radius. Comparing experimental data with predictions for the hyperfine splitting, the Zemach radius of the proton is deduced to be $1.045(16)$ fm. Employing exponential parametrizations for the electromagnetic form factors we determine the magnetic radius of the proton to be $0.778(29)$ fm. Both values are compared with the corresponding ones derived from the data obtai…
The ground-state hyperfine splitting values of high-Z boronlike ions are calculated. Calculation of the interelectronic-interaction contribution is based on a combination of the 1/Z perturbation theory and the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The screened QED corrections are evaluated utilizing an effective screening potential approach. Total hyperfine splitting energies are presented for several B-like ions of particular interest: {}^{45}Sc{}^{16+}, {}^{57}Fe{}^{21+}, {}^{207}Pb{}^{77+}, and {}^{209}Bi{}^{78+}. For lead and bismuth the experimental values of the …
The hyperfine splitting in hydrogenlike $^{209}$Bi, $^{203}$Tl, and $^{205}$Tl is calculated with the nuclear magnetization determined from experimental data on the hyperfine splitting in the corresponding muonic atoms. The single-particle and configuration-mixing nuclear models are considered. The QED corrections are taken into account for both electronic and muonic atoms. The obtained results are compared with other calculations and with experiment.
An angle-resolved x-ray spectroscopic scheme is presented for determining the hyperfine splitting of highly charged ions. For helium-like ions, in particular, we propose to measure either the angular distribution or polarization of the $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F \rightarrow 1s^{2}~^{1}S_{0}, F_{f}$ emission following the stimulated decay of the initial $1s2s~^{1}S_{0}, F_{i}$ level. It is found that both the angular and polarization characteristics of the emitted x-ray photons strongly depends on the (relative) \textit{splitting} of the partially overlapping hyperfine $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F$ resonances an…
The ground state hyperfine splitting values of high Z hydrogenlike ions are calculated. The relativistic, nuclear and QED corrections are taken into account. The nuclear magnetization distribution correction (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is evaluated within the single particle model with the g_{S}-factor chosen to yield the observed nuclear moment. An additional contribution caused by the nuclear spin-orbit interaction is included in the calculation of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. It is found that the theoretical value of the wavelength of the transition between the hyperfine splitting components …
Using a technique based on production of ion Coulomb crystals, the isotope shifts of the 4s2 1S0 -> 4s5p 1P1 transition for all naturally occurring isotopes of calcium as well as the hyperfine splitting of the 4s5p 1P1 state in Ca-43 have been measured. The field shift and specific mass shift coefficients as well as the hyperfine structure constants for Ca-43 have been derived from the data.
We present the direct measurements of electric-dipole moments for $5P_{3/2}\to nD_{5/2}$ transitions with $20<n<48$ for Rubidium atoms. The measurements were performed in an ultracold sample via observation of the Autler-Townes splitting in a three-level ladder scheme, commonly used for 2-photon excitation of Rydberg states. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic measurement of the electric dipole moments for transitions from low excited states of rubidium to Rydberg states. Due to its simplicity and versatility, this method can be easily extended to other transitions and o…
Frequency comb based multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a novel optical method that enables high resolution measurement in a short acquisition time. The method's resolution makes multidimensional coherent spectroscopy relevant for atomic systems that have narrow resonances. We use double-quantum multidimensional coherent spectroscopy to reveal collective hyperfine resonances in rubidium vapor at 100 C induced by dipole-dipole interactions. We observe tilted lineshapes in the double-quantum 2D spectra, which has never been reported for Doppler-broadened systems. The tilted lineshapes sug…
The hyperfine structure of 5snd ^1D_2 states in ^{87}Sr was studied for principal quantum numbers 11 <= n <= 25 by Doppler-free two-photon excitation combined with thermionic detection. Based on the more accurate data, compared to previous results, the hyperfine structure was analysed by second order perturbation theory using MQDT wavefunctions. As a result we find that the surprisingly large B-factors obtained by fitting the data with the Casimir formula do not reflect a quadrupolar interaction but rather consist predominantly of second order magnetic dipole contributions. Further, inconsiste…
The screened QED corrections of the first orders in αand 1/Z to the g factor and the hyperfine splitting of lithiumlike ions are evaluated within ab initio quantum electrodynamical approach. The complete gauge-invariant set of the two-electron self-energy diagrams in the presence of the magnetic field and a dominant part of the two-electron vacuum-polarization diagrams are calculated. The most accurate values of the g factor of Li-like lead and uranium are presented. The theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splittings of H- and Li-like bismuth is improved.
The rigorous QED evaluation of the one- and two-photon exchange corrections to the ground-state hyperfine splitting in Li-like ions is presented for the wide range of nuclear charge number $Z= 7 - 82$. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture, i.e., with inclusion of the effective local screening potential in the zeroth-order approximation. The interelectronic-interaction contributions of the third and higher orders are taken into account in the framework of the Breit approximation employing the recursive perturbation theory. In comparison to the previous…
The influence of hyperfine interactions on the tune-out wavelengths of the $^{39,40,41}$K isotopes of the potassium atom was investigated. The hyperfine interaction of the $4s_{1/2}$ state result in a shift and splitting of the primary tune-out wavelength near 769 nm. The $4s_{1/2}$ ground state hyperfine splittings of the primary tune-out were almost equal to the hyperfine splittings of the ground states. The splittings in the wavelengths were 0.0008, 0.0027 and 0.0005 nm for $^{39}$K, $^{40}$K and $^{41}$K respectively. The hyperfine splitting of the $np_{J}$ levels leads to the creation of …
Regarding trapped-ion microwave-frequency standards, we report on the determination of hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$. The hyperfine splittings of the $5p~^2P_{3/2}$ state of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ ions were measured using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The Cd$^+$ ions were confined in a linear Paul trap and sympathetically cooled by Ca$^+$ ions. Furthermore, the hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of the $5s~^2S_{1/2}$ and $5p~^2P_{1/2,3/2}$ levels of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ were calculated with greater accuracy using the multiconfiguration Dirac-…
We have systematically investigated the ground-state hyperfine structure for alkali-metal atoms ^{87}Rb, ^{133}Cs, ^{211}Fr and alkali-metal-like ions ^{135}Ba^+, ^{225}Ra^+, which are of particular interest for parity violation studies. The quantum electrodynamic one-loop radiative corrections have been rigorously evaluated within an extended Furry picture employing core-Hartree and Kohn-Sham atomic potentials. Moreover, the effect of the nuclear magnetization distribution on the hyperfine structure intervals has been studied in detail and its uncertainty has been estimated. Finally, the theo…
The 7 standard deviations between the proton rms charge radius from muonic hydrogen and the CODATA-10 value from hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-scattering has caused considerable discussions. Here, we review the theory of the 2S-2P Lamb shift and 2S hyperfine splitting in muonic hydrogen combining the published contributions and theoretical approaches. The prediction of these quantities is necessary for the determination of both proton charge and Zemach radii from the two 2S-2P transition frequencies measured in muonic hydrogen.
We observe a hyperfine anomaly in the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S_{1/2} excited level in rubidium. We perform two step spectroscopy using the 5S_{1/2}->5P_{1/2}->6S_{1/2} excitation sequence. We measure the splitting of the 6S1/2 level and obtain for the magnetic dipole constants of ^{85}Rb and ^{87}Rb A = 239.18(4) MHz and A=807.66(8) MHz, respectively. The hyperfine anomaly difference of_{87}delta_{85}=-0.0036(2) comes from the Bohr Weisskopf effect: a correction to the point interaction between the finite nuclear magnetization and the electrons, and agrees with that obt…
A two-step, two-color laser spectroscopy technique has been used to measure the hyperfine splittings of the $8p$ excited states in $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl, as well as the $7s - 8p$ transition isotope shifts. For the case of the $8p_{3/2}$ state, our results show a hyperfine anomaly consistent with our recent measurements of other hyperfine splittings, and in disagreement with older results for this state. Our measurement of the $8p_{1/2}$ isotope shift is also in disagreement with earlier work. In this series of experiments, a UV laser was locked to the first-step transition and directed thr…
The hyperfine splitting of the ground state of selected B-like ions within the range of nuclear charge numbers $Z=49-83$ is investigated in detail. The rigorous QED approach together with the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method are employed for the evaluation of the interelectronic-interaction contributions of first and higher orders in $1/Z$. The screened QED corrections are evaluated to all orders in $αZ$ by using an effective potential. The influence of nuclear magnetization distribution is taken into account within the single-particle nuclear model.
We use six years of accurate hyperfine frequency comparison data of the dual rubidium and caesium cold atom fountain FO2 at LNE-SYRTE to search for a massive scalar dark matter candidate. Such a scalar field can induce harmonic variations of the fine structure constant, of the mass of fermions and of the quantum chromodynamic mass scale, which will directly impact the rubidium/caesium hyperfine transition frequency ratio. We find no signal consistent with a scalar dark matter candidate but provide improved constraints on the coupling of the putative scalar field to standard matter. Our limits …
Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances on the hyperfine transitions belonging to the D2 line of rubidium were changed from bright to dark resonances by changing the laser power density of the single exciting laser field or by changing the vapor temperature in the cell. In one set of experiments atoms were excited by linearly polarized light from an extended cavity diode laser with polarization vector perpendicular to the light's propagation direction and magnetic field, and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) was observed along the direction of the magnetic field, which was scanned. A low-contrast …
A high-precision numerical calculation is reported for the self-energy correction to the hyperfine splitting and to the bound-electron g factor in hydrogenlike ions with low nuclear charge numbers. The binding nuclear Coulomb field is treated to all orders, and the nonperturbative remainder beyond the known $Zα$-expansion coefficients is determined. For the $^3{\rm He}^+$ ion, the nonperturbative remainder yields a contribution of -450 Hz to the normalized difference of the 1S and 2S hyperfine-structure intervals, to be compared with the experimental uncertainty of 71 Hz and with the theoretic…
We implement a 4-level semiclassical model of a single pulse interacting with the hyperfine structure in ultracold rubidium aimed at control of population dynamics and quantum state preparation. We discuss a method based on pulse chirping to achieve population inversion between hyperfine states of the 5S shell. The results may prove useful for quantum operations with ultracold atoms.
Three-loop corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant sets of diagrams with muon and tauon loop light-by-light scattering blocks are calculated. These results complete calculations of all light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium.
Nuclear structure corrections of orders $Zα\, E_F$ and $(Zα)^2 E_F$ are calculated for the hyperfine splitting of the muonic deuterium. The obtained results disagree with previous calculations and lead to a $5\,σ$ disagreement with the current experimental value of the $2S$ hyperfine splitting in $μ$D.
The muon and tauon light-by-light scattering contributions to hyperfine splitting in muonium are calculated. These results conclude calculation of all hard three-loop contributions to hyperfine splitting containing graphs with closed fermion loops. We discuss the special role that the lepton anomalous magnetic moments play in these calculations. The full result for all three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting generated by the graphs with closed lepton loops is presented.
The hyperfine structure splittings of the ground states of the $pdμ, ptμ$ and $dtμ$ ions are determined with the use of highly accurate expectation values of the interparticle delta-functions obtained in recent computations. The corresponding hyperfine structure splittings, e.g., $Δ_{12} =$ 1.3400149$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ and $Δ_{23} =$ 3.3518984$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ for the $ptμ$ ion, can directly be measured in modern experiments.
The hyperfine structure splittings are determined for all five bound $S(L = 0)-$states in the three symmetric muonic molecular ions: $ppμ, ddμ$ and $ttμ$. The expectation values of all interparticle delta-functions used in our calculations have been determined in recent highly accurate computations.
The interaction of orbital electrons with the charge and magnetic moment of the nucleus polarizes it, and the detailed description requires a careful treatment of the nuclear vector polarizability. We present a complete and closed form expression for the resulting contribution to hyperfine splitting in light atomic systems.
We calculate radiative corrections to the Lamb shift of order $α^3(Zα)^5m$ and radiative corrections to hyperfine splitting of order $α^3(Zα)E_F$ generated by the diagrams with insertions of radiative photons and electron polarization loops in the graphs with two external photons. We also obtain the radiative-recoil correction to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with the $τ$ polarization loop.
We calculate radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the diagrams with electron and muon polarization loops. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithm of the electron-muon mass ratio. The leading logarithm cubed and logarithm squared contributions were obtained a long time ago. The single-logarithmic and nonlogarithmic contributions calculated here improve the theory of hyperfine splitting, and affect the value of the electron-muon mass ratio extracted from the experimental data on the muonium hyperfine splitting.
We consider three-loop radiative-recoil corrections to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by the gauge invariant set of diagrams with virtual light-by-light scattering block. These corrections are enhanced by the large logarithms of the electron-muon mass ratio. We present the results of an analytic calculation of the single-logarithmic radiative-recoil corrections of order $α^2(Zα)(m/M)E_F$ to hyperfine splitting in muonium generated by these diagrams.
The single photon annihilation contributions for the positronium ground state hyperfine splitting are calculated analytically to order $m_eα^6$ using NRQED. Based on intuitive physical arguments the same result can also be determined by a trivial calculation using results from existing literature. Our result completes the hyperfine splitting calculation to order $m_eα^6$. We compare the theoretical prediction with the most recent experimental measurement.
