Using a technique based on production of ion Coulomb crystals, the isotope shifts of the 4s2 1S0 -> 4s5p 1P1 transition for all naturally occurring isotopes of calcium as well as the hyperfine splitting of the 4s5p 1P1 state in Ca-43 have been measured. The field shift and specific mass shift coefficients as well as the hyperfine structure constants for Ca-43 have been derived from the data.
We demonstrate a combination of an isotopically purified atom beam and a magneto-optical trap which enables the single atom detection of all stable isotopes of calcium (40, 42, 43, 44, 46 and 48). These isotopes range in abundance from 96.9 % (40Ca) to 0.004 (46Ca). The trap is loaded from an atomic beam which is decelerated in a Zeeman slower and subsequently deflected over an angle of 30 degrees by optical molasses. The isotope selectivity of the Zeeman slower and the deflection stage is investigated experimentally and compared with Monte Carlo simulations.
A new method for determining the hyperfine anomaly, without knowing the nuclear magnetic moment, is used for the first time on a series of unstable isotopes. The relative large number of experimental data in Eu makes it possible to determine the hyperfine anomaly for a number of unstable isotopes. Calculations of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect and hence the hyperfine anomaly has been performed using the particle-rotor formalism. The result from the calculations and experiments is compared with other theoretical calculations and the empirical Moskowitz-Lombardi formula.
We present studies of resonance-enhanced photo-ionization for isotope-selective loading of Ca+ into a Paul trap. The 4s^2 ^1S_0 <-> 4s4p ^1P_1 transition of neutral calcium is driven by a 423nm laser and the atoms are photo-ionized by a second laser at 389nm. Isotope-selectivity is achieved by using crossed atomic and laser beams to reduce the Doppler width significantly below the isotope shifts in the 423nm transition. The loading rate of ions into the trap is studied under a range of experimental parameters for the abundant isotope 40Ca+. Using the fluorescence of the atomic beam at 423nm as…
Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of tungsten were studied in the near UV range. We have used laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy on a pulsed supersonic beam to probe the 5D0 -> 5F1 transition at 384.9 nm, 7S3 -> 7P4 transition at 400.9 nm, and 7S3 -> 7P3 transition at 407.4 nm. Three new magnetic hyperfine constants are reported for 7P3,7P4, and 5F1 states. The isotope shifts of the 384.9 nm transition are presented for the first time, and the isotope shifts of 400.9 nm and 407.4 nm transition are measured with an order of magnitude higher precision compared to the previous measureme…
The hyperfine structure and isotope shifts of the 3s23p2 3P2 to 3s3p3 3Do3 transition in silicon have been measured. The transition at 221.7 nm was studied by laser induced fluorescence in an atomic Si beam. For 29Si, the hyperfine A constant for the 3s23p2 3P2 level was determined to be -160.1+-1.3 MHz (1 sigma error), and the A constant for the 3s3p3 3Do3 level is -532.9+-0.6 MHz. This is the first time that these constants were measured. The isotope shifts (relative to the abundant isotope 28Si) of the transition were determined to be 1753.3+-1.1 MHz for 29Si and 3359.9+-0.6 MHz for 30Si. T…

The field and specific mass shift coefficients of the transition have been derived from the data, as well as the experimental value for the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling constant A of the excited state of the transition in 57Fe : A(3d6 4s4p z 5F4o) = 68.21(69) MHz. The measurements were…

This line is of primary importance for laser cooling applications. In addition, an experimental value of the field and specific mass shift coefficients of the transition is reported as well as the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole coupling constant $A$…
A two-step, two-color laser spectroscopy technique has been used to measure the hyperfine splittings of the $8p$ excited states in $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl, as well as the $7s - 8p$ transition isotope shifts. For the case of the $8p_{3/2}$ state, our results show a hyperfine anomaly consistent with our recent measurements of other hyperfine splittings, and in disagreement with older results for this state. Our measurement of the $8p_{1/2}$ isotope shift is also in disagreement with earlier work. In this series of experiments, a UV laser was locked to the first-step transition and directed thr…
We have calculated the s-wave scattering length of all the even isotopes of calcium (Ca) and barium (Ba), in order to investigate the prospect of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). For Ca we have used an accurate molecular potential based on detailed spectroscopic data. Our calculations show that Ca does not provide other isotopes alternative to the recently Bose condensed 40Ca that suffers strong losses because of a very large scattering length. For Ba we show by using a model potential that the even isotopes cover a broad range of scattering lengths, opening the possibility of BEC for at leas…
This work is an ab initio study of the 2p3 4So_3/2, and 2Do_{3/2,5/2} states of C- and 2p2 3P_{0,1,2}, 1D_2, and 1S_0 states of neutral carbon. We use the multi-configuration Hartree-Fock approach, focusing on the accuracy of the wave function itself. We obtain all C- detachment thresholds, including correlation effects to about 0.5%. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures are calculated. The achieved accuracy of the latter is of the order of 0.1 MHz. Intra-configuration transition probabilities are also estimated.
A two-step, two-color laser spectroscopy technique has been used to measure the hyperfine splitting of the 7p$_{1/2}$ excited state in $^{203}$Tl and $^{205}$Tl, as well as the isotope shift within the 7s$_{1/2}$ - 7p$_{1/2}$ transition. Our measured values for the hyperfine splittings, 2153.2(7) MHz (in $^{203}$Tl) and 2173.3(8) MHz (in $^{205}$Tl), each differ by 20 MHz from previously published values which quoted comparable precision. The transition isotope shift of $^{203}$Tl relative to $^{205}$Tl was measured to be 534.4(9) MHz. In our experiment, one laser was locked to the thallium gr…
Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy is performed on an enriched radioactive Ar-39 sample. The spectrum of the 3s^2 3p^5 4s [3/2]_2 - 3s^2 3p^5 4p [5/2]_3 cycling transition at 811.8 nm is recorded, and its isotope shift between Ar-39 and Ar-40 is derived. The hyperfine coupling constants A and B for both the 4s [3/2]_2 and 4p [5/2]_3 energy levels in Ar-39 are also determined. The results partially disagree with a recently published measurement of the same transition. Based on earlier measurements as well as the current work, the isotope shift and hyperfine structure of the correspo…
A measurement of the hyperfine coefficients and isotope shifts for the Dy I 421.291 nm transition [$4f^{10}6s^2 (J=8)\to4f^{10}6s6p (J=9)$] using atomic beam laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy is presented. A King Plot analysis is performed to determine a specific mass shift of $δν_{sms}^{164-162}=11(7)$ Hz for the 421-nm transition, confirming the pure $4f^{10}6s6p$ configuration of the excited state. This transition is currently being explored for laser cooling of an atomic beam of dysprosium used in a search for a temporal variation of the fine-structure constant.
Promising searches for new physics beyond the current Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, …
We present measurements of the hyperfine splitting in the Yb-173 $6s6p~^1P_1^{\rm o} (F^{\prime}=3/2,7/2)$ states that disagree significantly with those measured previously by Das and Natarajan [Phys. Rev. A 76, 062505 (2007)]. We point out inconsistencies in their measurements and suggest that their error is due to optical pumping and improper determination of the atomic line center. Our measurements are made using an optical frequency comb. We use an optical pumping scheme to improve the signal-to-background ratio for the $F^{\prime}=3/2$ component.
Hyperfine-structure constants of odd Ra$^{+}$ due to the interactions of nuclear magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic octupole moments with the electrons are investigated in the framework of relativistic coupled-cluster method within single- and double-excitation approximation. The calculated energies and magnetic dipole hyperfine-structure constants $A$ exhibit a good agreement with available experimental values. Combining with the experimental electric quadrupole hyperfine-structure constant, we also extracted the electric quadrupole moments $Q$ of $^{209,211,221,223}$Ra. Our $…
We have measured the hyperfine splitting of the $7P_{1/2}$ state at the 100 ppm level in Fr isotopes ($^{206g,206m, 207, 209, 213, 221}$Fr) near the closed neutron shell ($N$ = 126 in $^{213}$Fr). The measurements in five isotopes and a nuclear isomeric state of francium, combined with previous determinations of the $7S_{1/2}$ splittings, reveal the spatial distribution of the nuclear magnetization, i.e. the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. We compare our results with a simple shell model consisting of unpaired single valence nucleons orbiting a spherical nucleus, and find good agreement over a range of…
Longstanding problems in the comparison of very accurate hyperfine-shift measurements to theory were partly overcome by precise measurements on few-electron highly-charged ions. Still the agreement between theory and experiment is unsatisfactory. In this paper, we present a radically new way of precisely measuring hyperfine shifts, and demonstrate its effectiveness in the case of the hyperfine shift of $4s\_{1/2}$ and $4p\_{1/2}$ in $^{207}\mathrm{Pb}^{53+}$. It is based on the precise detection of dielectronic resonances that occur in electron-ion recombination at very low energy. This allows…
We have investigated $4s\;^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 5p\;^2P_{1/2}$ transition ($D_1$ line) of the potassium isotopes $^{39}$K, $^{40}$K, and $^{41}$K using Doppler-free laser saturation spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal the hyperfine splitting of the $5p\;^2P_{1/2}$ state of $^{40}$K and we have determined the specific mass shift and the nuclear field shift constants for the blue $D_1$ line.
We have investigated energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants ($A_{hyf}$) and electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of a number of low-lying states of the triply ionized tin (Sn$^{3+}$) by employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Contributions from the Breit interaction and lower-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in determination of above quantities are also given explicitly. These higher-order relativistic effects are found to be important for accurate evaluation of energies, while QED contributions are seen to be contributing significantly to the determination o…
Hyperfine quenching rates of the lowest-energy metastable $^3P_0$ and $^3P_2$ states of Mg, Ca, Sr, and Yb atoms are computed. The calculations are carried out using ab initio relativistic many-body methods. The computed lifetimes may be useful for designing novel ultra-precise optical clocks and trapping experiments with the $3P_2$ fermionic isotopes. The resulting natural widths of the $^3P_0 -> ^1S_0$ clock transition are 0.44 mHz for $^{25}$Mg, 2.2 mHz for $^{43}$Ca, 7.6 mHz for $^{87}$Sr, 43.5 mHz for $^{171}$Yb, and 38.5 mHz for $^{173}$Yb. Compared to the bosonic isotopes, the lifetime …
Comprehensive calculations of energy levels, radiative transition parameters, hyperfine structure constants A$_J$-B$_J$, Landé g$_J$ factors and isotope shifts for Sc XX
We demonstrate a technique for frequency measurements of UV transitions with sub-MHz precision. The frequency is measured using a ring-cavity resonator whose length is calibrated against a reference laser locked to the $D_2$ line of $^{87}$Rb. We have used this to measure the 398.8 nm ${^1S}_0 \leftrightarrow {^1P}_1$ line of atomic Yb. We report isotope shifts of all the seven stable isotopes, including the rarest isotope $^{168}$Yb. We have been able to resolve the overlapping $^{173}$Yb($F = 3/2$) and $^{172}$Yb transitions for the first time. We also obtain high-precision measurements of e…

The hyperfine structure in the 6p2-configuration in lead has been analysed and the results is compared with calculations. The hyperfine anomaly and improved values of the nuclear magnetic moment for four lead isotopes is obtained, using the results from the analysis. The results open up for new measurements of the hyperfine structure in unstable lead isotopes, in order to extract information of the hyperfine anomaly and distribution of magnetisation in the nucleus.
The influence of hyperfine interactions on the tune-out wavelengths of the $^{39,40,41}$K isotopes of the potassium atom was investigated. The hyperfine interaction of the $4s_{1/2}$ state result in a shift and splitting of the primary tune-out wavelength near 769 nm. The $4s_{1/2}$ ground state hyperfine splittings of the primary tune-out were almost equal to the hyperfine splittings of the ground states. The splittings in the wavelengths were 0.0008, 0.0027 and 0.0005 nm for $^{39}$K, $^{40}$K and $^{41}$K respectively. The hyperfine splitting of the $np_{J}$ levels leads to the creation of …
We report on spectroscopic results on the $^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow\,^2P_{3/2}$ transition in single trapped Yb$^+$ ions. We measure the isotope shifts for all stable Yb$^+$ isotopes except $^{173}$Yb$^+$, as well as the hyperfine splitting of the $^2P_{3/2}$ state in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. Our results are in agreement with previous measurements but are a factor of 5-9 more precise. For the hyperfine constant $A\left(^2P_{3/2}\right) = 875.4(10)$ MHz our results also agree with previous measurements but deviate significantly from theoretical predictions. We present experimental results on the branching …
We have magneto-optically trapped all three stable neon isotopes, including the rare Ne-21, and all two-isotope combinations. The atoms are prepared in the metastable ^3P_2 state and manipulated via laser interaction on the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3} transition at 640.2nm. These cold (T = 1mK) and environmentally decoupled atom samples present ideal objects for precision measurements and the investigation of interactions between cold and ultracold metastable atoms. In this work, we present accurate measurements of the isotope shift of the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3 transition and the hyperfine interaction constants …
We calculated the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole hyperfine interaction constants of 3s3p $^{3,1}P^o_1$ states and the isotope shift, including mass and field shift, factors for transitions from these two states to the ground state 3s$^2~^1S_0$ in Al$^+$ ions using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. The effects of the electron correlations and the Breit interaction on these physical quantities were investigated in detail based on the active space approach. It is found that the CC and the higher-order correlations are considerable for evaluating the uncertainties of t…
Laser spectroscopy of the low lying $^1$P and $^3$D states in atomic barium has been performed. This work contributes substantially to the development of an effective laser cooling and trapping for heavy alkaline earth elements and aims in particular for a better understanding of the atomic wave function of these systems. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structures are ideal probes for the wave functions at the position of the nucleus. This is essential input for a theoretical evaluation of the sensitivity to fundamental symmetry breaking properties like permanent electric dipole moments. We repor…
Energy levels, wavelengths, lifetimes and hyperfine structure constants for the isotopes of the first and second spectra of radium, Ra I and Ra II have been compiled. Wavelengths and wave numbers are tabulated for 226Ra and for other Ra isotopes. Isotope shifts and hyperfine structure constants of even and odd-A isotopes of neutral radium atom and singly ionized radium are included. Experimental lifetimes of the states for both neutral and ionic Ra are also added, where available. The information is beneficial for present and future experiments aimed at different physics motivations using neut…
We use relativistic Hartree-Fock and correlation potential methods to calculate nuclear spin-dependent parity non-conserving amplitudes (dominated by the nuclear anapole moment) between hyperfine structure components of the ground state of odd isotopes of K, Rb, Cs, Ba+, Yb+, Tl, Fr, and Ra+. The results are to be used for interpretation of current and future measurements.
Relativistic Calculation of Energies, Transition Parameters Hyperfine Structure, Landé g$_J$ and Isotope shifts factors for Ar$^{7+}$, Kr$^{25+}$ and Xe$^{43+}$ ions
Accurate calculations of the fine and hyperfine splitting of the 2P state in Li and Be$^+$ isotopes using the explicitly correlated Hylleraas basis set are presented. Theoretical predictions including the mixing of $P_{1/2}$ and $P_{3/2}$ states, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics effects on hyperfine interactions, are compared with experimental values. It is concluded that precise spectroscopic determination of the nuclear magnetic moments requires elimination of nuclear structure effects by combining measurements for two different states.
We present absolute frequency measurements of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($229$nm) and ${}^{3}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ ($326$nm) transitions for all naturally occurring isotopes of cadmium. The isotope shifts and hyperfine intervals of the fermionic isotopes are determined with an accuracy of 3.3MHz. We find that quantum interference in the laser-induced fluorescence spectra of the ${}^{1}\text{P}_1 \leftarrow {}^{1}\text{S}_0$ transition causes an error of up to 29(5)MHz in determining the hyperfine splitting, when not accounted for with an appropriate m…
Optical frequency measurements of the intercombination line $(6s^{2})\,^{1}S_{0} -(6s6p)\,^{3}P_{1}$ in the isotopes of ytterbium are carried out with the use of sub-Doppler fluorescence spectroscopy on an atomic beam. A dispersive signal is generated to which a master laser is locked, while frequency counting of an auxiliary beat signal is performed via a frequency comb referenced to a hydrogen maser. The relative separations between the lines are used to evaluate the $^{3}P_{1}$-level magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole constants for the fermionic isotopes. The center of gravity for the …
Relativistic corrections to the hyperfine splitting are calculated for the triplet $2^3S_1$ state of the helium isotope He$^3$. High precision variational wave functions are employed, where the electron-electron correlations are well accounted for. Due to the unknown nuclear structure a comparison with the experimental result is performed via He$^{3+}$ hyperfine splitting. Surprisingly, the second order contribution due to Fermi interaction, in spite of the additional small factor $m/M$, is very significant.
The photorecombination spectrum of 48Ti18+ was measured employing the merged electron-ion beams technique at a heavy-ion storage ring. The experimental electron-ion collision energy range 0-80 eV comprises all dielectronic recombination (DR) resonances associated with 2s->2p (Delta N =0) core excitations as well as trielectronic recombination (TR) resonances that involve 2s2->2p2 core double-excitations. At low collision energies DR resonances are observed that are associated with the excitation of metastable 2s2p 3P0 primary ions with nearly infinite lifetime for the isotope 48Ti with zero nu…
We present a measurement of the hyperfine splitting of the 6S$_{1/2}$ excited level of rubidium using two photon absorption spectroscopy in a glass cell. The values we obtain for the magnetic dipole constant A are 239.18(03) MHz and 807.66(08) MHz for $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb, respectively. The combination of the magnetic moments of the two isotopes and our measurements show a hyperfine anomaly in this atomic excited state. The observed hyperfine anomaly difference has a value of $_{87}δ_{85}=-0.0036(2)$ due to the finite distribution of nuclear magnetization, the Bohr-Weisskopf effect.
Hyperfine induced $1s2s ^1S_0 \to 1s^2 ^1S_0$ M1 transition probabilities of He-like ions have been calculated from relativistic configuration interaction wavefunctions including the frequency independent Breit interaction and QED effects. Present results for {$^{151}$}Eu and {$^{155}$}Gd are in good agreement with previous calculations [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 054105 (2001)]. Electronic data are given in terms of a general scaling law in $Z$ that, given isotopic nuclear spin and magnetic moment, allows hyperfine induced decay rates to be estimated for any isotope. The results should be helpful…
We have measured and analyzed the hyperfine structure of two lines, one at 583nm and one at 401nm, of the only stable fermionic isotope of atomic erbium as well as determined its isotope shift relative to the four most-abundant bosonic isotopes. Our work focuses on the J->J+1 laser cooling transitions from the [Xe] 4f12 6s2 (3H6) ground state to two levels of the excited [Xe] 4f12 6s6p configuration, which are of major interest for experiments on quantum degenerate dipolar Fermi gases. From a fit to the observed spectra of the strong optical transition at 401nm we find that the magnetic dipole…
We report a comparative investigation of trap loss rates in a magneto-optical trap for two potassium isotopes, 39K and 40K, as a function of trap light intensity. The isotopes present a quite similar behavior for the loss rates at high intensities, and a sudden increase of the loss rates at low intensities is present in both cases. While for 39K such increase can be explained assuming that the major contribution to the losses comes from Hyperfine Changing Collisions, a different loss mechanism must be considered for 40K, which has an inverted ground state hyperfine structure. The experimental …
This work presents precise calculations of important electromagnetic transition amplitudes along with detail of their many-body correlations using relativistic coupled cluster method. Studies of hyperfine interaction constants, useful for plasma diagnostic, with this correlation exhaustive many-body approach are another important area of this work. The calculated oscillator strengths of allowed transitions, amplitudes of forbidden transitions and lifetimes are compared with the other theoretical results wherever available and they show a good agreement. Hyperfine constants of different isotope…
Nuclear quadrupole moments ($Q$s) in three isotopes of potassium (K) with atomic mass numbers 39, 40 and 41 are evaluated more precisely in this work. The $Q$ value of $^{39}$K is determined to be 0.0614(6) $b$ by combining the available experimental result of the electric quadrupole hyperfine structure constant ($B$) with our calculated $B/Q$ result of its $4P_{3/2}$ state. Furthermore combining this $Q$ value with the measured ratios $Q$($ ^{40}$K)$/Q$($ ^{39}$K) and $Q$($ ^{41}$K)$/Q$($ ^{39}$K), we obtain $Q$($ ^{40}$K)$=-0.0764(10) \ b$ and $Q$($ ^{41}$K)$=0.0747(10) \ b$, respectively. T…
The Dirac-Hartree-Fock plus many-body perturbation theory (DHF+MBPT) method has been used to calculate hyperfine structure constants for Fr. Calculated hyperfine structure anomaly for hydrogen-like ion has been shown to be in good agreement with analytical expressions. It has been shown that the ratio of the anomalies for $s$ and $p_{1/2}$ states is weakly dependent on the principal quantum number. Finally, we estimate Bohr--Weisskopf corrections for several Fr isotopes. Our results may be used to improve experimental accuracy for the nuclear $g$ factors of short-lived isotopes.
The ground state hyperfine splitting values and the transition probabilities between the hyperfine structure components of high Z lithiumlike ions are calculated in the range $Z=49-83$. The relativistic, nuclear, QED and interelectronic interaction corrections are taken into account. It is found that the Bohr-Weisskopf effect can be eliminated in a combination of the hyperfine splitting values of the hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions of an isotope. This gives a possibility for testing the QED effects in a combination of the strong electric and magnetic fields of the heavy nucleus. Using the ex…
We demonstrate the first application of a liquid-metal ion source for collinear laser spectroscopy in proof-of-principle measurements on naturally abundant In$^+$. The superior beam quality, i.e., the actively stabilized current and energy of a beam with very low transverse emittance, allowed us to perform precision spectroscopy on the $5s^2\;^1\mathrm{S}_0 \rightarrow 5s5p\;^3\mathrm{P}_1$ intercombination transition in $^{115}$In$^+$, which is to our knowledge the slowest transition measured with collinear fluorescence laser spectroscopy so far. By applying collinear and anticollinear spectr…
