The ground state hyperfine splitting values and the transition probabilities between the hyperfine structure components of high Z lithiumlike ions are calculated in the range $Z=49-83$. The relativistic, nuclear, QED and interelectronic interaction corrections are taken into account. It is found that the Bohr-Weisskopf effect can be eliminated in a combination of the hyperfine splitting values of the hydrogenlike and lithiumlike ions of an isotope. This gives a possibility for testing the QED effects in a combination of the strong electric and magnetic fields of the heavy nucleus. Using the experimental result for the $1s$ hyperfine splitting in ^{209}Bi^{82+}, the 2s hyperfine splitting in ^{209}Bi^{80+} is calculated to be ΔE=0.7969(2) eV.
The screened QED corrections of the first orders in αand 1/Z to the g factor and the hyperfine splitting of lithiumlike ions are evaluated within ab initio quantum electrodynamical approach. The complete gauge-invariant set of the two-electron self-energy diagrams in the presence of the magnetic field and a dominant part of the two-electron vacuum-polarization diagrams are calculated. The most accurate values of the g factor of Li-like lead and uranium are presented. The theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splittings of H- and Li-like bismuth is improved.

The interelectronic-interaction contributions of the third and higher orders are taken into account in the framework of the Breit approximation employing the recursive perturbation theory. In comparison to the previous…
A rigorous evaluation of the complete gauge-invariant set of the screened one-loop QED corrections to the hyperfine structure and g factor in lithiumlike heavy ions is presented. The calculations are performed in both Feynman and Coulomb gauges for the virtual photon mediating the interelectronic interaction. As a result, the most accurate theoretical predictions for the specific difference between the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like Bi ions as well as for the g factor of Li-like Pb ion are obtained.
The total cross section for double ionization of lithiumlike ions by a high-energy photon is calculated in leading order of the nonrelativistic perturbation theory. The partial contributions due to simultaneous and sequential emissions of two electrons are taken into account. The cross section under consideration is shown to be related to those for double photoeffect on the ground and excited 2^{1,3}S states of heliumlike ions. The double-to-single ionization ratio is equal to R = 0.288/Z^2 for lithiumlike ions with moderate nuclear charge numbers Z. However, even for the lightest three-electr…

The screened self-energy corrections are calculated for the intermediate-$Z$ region and its accuracy for the high-$Z$ region is essentially improved in comparison with that of previous calculations. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the g factor of lithiumlike ions is significantly increased. The theoretical prediction obtained for the g factor of $^{28}$Si$^{11+}$ ${\rm g}_{\rm th} = 2.000\,889\,892(8)$ is in an excellent agreement with the corresponding experimental value…
We present the most accurate up-to-date theoretical values of the {2p_{1/2}}-{2s} and {2p_{3/2}}-{2s} transition energies and the ground-state hyperfine splitting in ${\rm Sc}^{18+}$. All two- and three-electron contributions to the energy values up to the two-photon level are treated in the framework of bound-state QED without $\aZ$-expansion. The interelectronic interaction beyond the two-photon level is taken into account by means of the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm (CI-DFS) method. The relativistic recoil correction is calculated with many-electron wave functions …

We investigate the quantum interference induced shifts between energetically close states in highly charged ions, with the energy structure being observed by laser spectroscopy. In this work, we focus on hyperfine states of lithiumlike heavy-$Z$ isotopes and quantify how much quantum interference changes the observed transition frequencies. The process of photon excitation and subsequent photon decay for the transition $2s\rightarrow2p\rightarrow2s$ is implemented with fully relativistic and full-multipole frameworks, which are relevant for such relativistic atomic systems. We consider the iso…
The one-loop self-energy correction to the hyperfine structure splitting of the 1s and 2s states of hydrogenlike ions is calculated both for the point and finite nucleus. The results of the calculation are combined with other corrections to find the ground state hyperfine splitting in lithiumlike ^{209}Bi^{80+} and ^{165}Ho^{64+}.
The recently established agreement between experiment and theory for the $g$ factors of lithiumlike silicon and calcium ions manifests the most stringent test of the many-electron bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in the presence of a magnetic field. In this Letter, we present a significant simultaneous improvement of both theoretical $g_\text{th} = 2.000\,889\,894\,4\,(34)$ and experimental $g_\text{exp} = 2.000\,889\,888\,45\,(14)$ values of the $g$ factor of lithiumlike silicon $^{28}$Si$^{11+}$. The theoretical precision now is limited by the many-electron two-loop contribu…
A rigorous evaluation of the two-photon exchange corrections to the hyperfine structure in lithiumlike heavy ions is presented. As a result, the theoretical accuracy of the specific difference between the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like Bi ions is significantly improved. This opens a possibility for the stringent test of the many-electron QED effects on a few percent level in the strongest electromagnetic field presently available in experiments.
We have investigated the correction to the hyperfine structure of heavy multicharged ions, which is connected with the nuclear-polarization effect caused by the unpaired bound electron. Numerical calculations are performed for hydrogenlike ions taking into account the dominant collective nuclear excitations. The correction defines the ultimate limit of precision in accurate theoretical predictions of the hyperfine-structure splittings.

Hyperfine structures of the triplet $n^3S-$states in the four-electron Be-atom(s) and Be-like ions are considered. It is shown that to determine the hyperfine structure splitting in such atomic systems one needs to know the triplet electron density at the central atomic nucleus $ρ_T(0)$. We have developed the procedure which allows allows one to determine such an electron density $ρ_T(0)$ for arbitrary four-electron atoms and ions.
Ab initio QED calculations of the ground-state binding energies of berylliumlike ions are performed for the wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=18-96. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture starting with three different types of the screening potential. The rigorous QED calculations up to the second order of the perturbation theory are combined with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions obtained within the Breit approximation by the use of the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. An angle-resolved x-ray spectroscopic scheme is presented for determining the hyperfine splitting of highly charged ions. For helium-like ions, in particular, we propose to measure either the angular distribution or polarization of the $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F \rightarrow 1s^{2}~^{1}S_{0}, F_{f}$ emission following the stimulated decay of the initial $1s2s~^{1}S_{0}, F_{i}$ level. It is found that both the angular and polarization characteristics of the emitted x-ray photons strongly depends on the (relative) \textit{splitting} of the partially overlapping hyperfine $1s2p~^{3}P_{1}, F$ resonances an…
In this paper, we used the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method to compute with high precision the influence of the hyperfine interaction on the $[Ar]3d^{10} 4s4p ^3P_0$ level lifetime in Zn-like ions for stable and some quasi-stable isotopes of nonzero nuclear spin between Z=30 and Z=92. The influence of this interaction on the $[Ar]3d^{10} 4s4p ^3P_1 - [Ar]3d^{10} 4s4p ^3P_0$ separation energy is also calculated for the same ions.
A complete effective Hamiltonian for relativistic corrections at orders $mα^6$ and $mα^6(m/M)$ in a one-electron molecular system is derived from the NRQED Lagrangian. It includes spin-independent corrections to the energy levels and spin-spin scalar interactions contributing to the hyperfine splitting, both of which had been studied previously. In addition, corrections to electron spin-orbit and spin-spin tensor interactions are newly obtained. This allows improving the hyperfine structure theory in the hydrogen molecular ions. Improved values of the spin-orbit hyperfine coefficient are calcu…

Energy levels, hyperfine interaction constants, and Landé $g_J$-factors are reported for n=2 states in beryllium-, boron-, carbon-, and nitrogen-like ions from relativistic configuration interaction calculations. Valence, core-valence, and core-core correlation effects are taken into account through single and double-excitations from multireference expansions to increasing sets of active orbitals. A systematic comparison of the calculated hyperfine interaction constants is made with values from the available literature.

The nuclear magnetization distribution correction (the Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is evaluated within the single particle model with the g_{S}-factor chosen to yield the observed nuclear moment. An additional contribution caused by the nuclear spin-orbit interaction is included in the calculation of the Bohr-Weisskopf effect. It is found that the theoretical value of the wavelength of the transition between the hyperfine splitting components …
The status of experimental measurements and theoretical calculations of the hyperfine induced 2s2p 3P0 -> 2s2 1S0 transition rate in Be-like ions is reviewed. Possible reasons, such as external electromagnetic fields and competing E1M1 two-photon transitions, for presently existing significant discrepancies between experiment and theory are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are outlined.
We apply relativistic many-body methods to compute static differential polarizabilities for transitions inside the ground-state hyperfine manifolds of monovalent atoms and ions. Knowing this transition polarizability is required in a number of high-precision experiments, such as microwave atomic clocks and searches for CP-violating permanent electric dipole moments. While the traditional polarizability arises in the second-order of interaction with the externally-applied electric field, the differential polarizability involves additional contribution from the hyperfine interaction of atomic el…
The hyperfine induced $2s2p ^3P_0, ^3P_2 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ E1 transition probabilities of Be-like ions were calculated using grasp2K based on multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method and HFST packages. It was found that the hyperfine quenching rates are strongly affected by the interference for low-Z Be-like ions, especially for $2s2p ^3P_0 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ transition. In particular, the trends of interference effects with atomic number $Z$ in such two transitions are not monotone. The strongest interference effect occurs near Z=7 for $2s2p ^3P_0 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ E1 transition, and near Z=9 for $2s2p…
Hyperfine induced $1s2s ^1S_0 \to 1s^2 ^1S_0$ M1 transition probabilities of He-like ions have been calculated from relativistic configuration interaction wavefunctions including the frequency independent Breit interaction and QED effects. The single-particle and configuration-mixing nuclear models are considered. The QED corrections are taken into account for both electronic and muonic atoms. The obtained results are compared with other calculations and with experiment.
We measured the ground-state hyperfine splitting of trapped ${}^{113}$Cd${}^{+}$ ions to be 15199862855.02799(27) Hz with a fractional uncertainty of $1.8\times10^{-14}$. The ions were trapped and laser-cooled in a linear quadrupole Paul trap. The fractional frequency stability was measured to be ${4.2} \times 10^{-13}/\sqrtτ $, obtained from Ramsey fringes of high signal-to-noise ratio and taken over a measurement time of nearly 5 hours, which is close to the short-term stability limit estimated from the Dick effect. Our result is consistent with previous reported values, but the measurement …

The angular and polarization properties of the photon pair emitted in the two--photon decay of $2s$ hyperfine states in hydrogenlike ions are investigated within the relativistic Dirac framework and second order perturbation theory. The studied transitions are $2s_{1/2}\,(F=1,0)\to1s_{1/2}\,(F=1,0)$ in Hydrogen atom and $2s_{1/2}\,(F=4,3)\to1s_{1/2}\,(F=4,3)$ in hydrogenlike Uranium ion. Two different emission patterns are found: For non-spin-flip transitions, the angular correlation ($i.e.$ the angular distribution of the emitted photons) is of the type $\sim 1+\cos^2θ$, while the linear pola…
Numerous few-electron atomic systems are considered which can be used effectively for observing a potential variation of the fine-structure constant $α$ and the electron-proton mass ratio $m_e/m_p$. We examine optical magnetic dipole transitions between hyperfine-structure components in heavy highly charged H-like and Li-like ions with observably high sensitivity to a variation of $α$ and $m_e/m_p$. The experimental spectra of the proposed systems consist of a strong single line, which simplifies significantly the data analysis and shortens the necessary measurement time. Furthermore, we propo…
The hyperfine structure (hfs) and the g factor of a bound electron are caused by external magnetic fields. For the hfs, the magnetic field is due to the nuclear spin. A uniform-in-space and constant-in-time magnetic field is used to probe the bound-electron g factor. The self-energy corrections to these effects are more difficult to evaluate than those to the Lamb shift. Here, we describe a numerical approach for both effects in the notoriously problematic regime of hydrogen-like bound systems with low nuclear charge numbers. The calculation is nonperturbative in the binding Coulomb field. Acc…
Regarding trapped-ion microwave-frequency standards, we report on the determination of hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$. The hyperfine structure splittings are determined for all five bound $S(L = 0)-$states in the three symmetric muonic molecular ions: $ppμ, ddμ$ and $ttμ$. The expectation values of all interparticle delta-functions used in our calculations have been determined in recent highly accurate computations.
The hyperfine structures of the $2\,^3\!S_1$ states of the $^6$Li$^+$ and $^7$Li$^+$ ions are investigated theoretically to extract the Zemach radii of the $^6$Li and $^7$Li nuclei by comparing with precision measurements. The obtained Zemach radii are larger than the previous values of Puchalski and Pachucki [\href{https://link.aps.org/doi/10.1103/PhysRevLett.111.243001}{Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 243001 (2013)}] and disagree with them by about 1.5 and 2.2 standard deviations for $^6$Li and $^7$Li, respectively. Furthermore, our Zemach radius of $^6$Li differs significantly from the nuclear …
The hyperfine structure splittings of the ground states of the $pdμ, ptμ$ and $dtμ$ ions are determined with the use of highly accurate expectation values of the interparticle delta-functions obtained in recent computations. The corresponding hyperfine structure splittings, e.g., $Δ_{12} =$ 1.3400149$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ and $Δ_{23} =$ 3.3518984$\cdot 10^7$ $MHz$ for the $ptμ$ ion, can directly be measured in modern experiments.
The hyperfine structure (HFS) of a bound electron is modified by the self-interaction of the electron with its own radiation field. This effect is known as the self-energy correction. In this work, we discuss the evaluation of higher-order self-energy corrections to the HFS of bound P states. These are expressed in a semi-analytic expansion involving powers of Zalpha and ln(Zalpha), where Z is the nuclear charge number and alpha is the fine-structure constant. We find that the correction of relative order alpha (Zalpha)^2 involves only a single logarithm ln(Zalpha) for P_1/2 states [but no ter…
The hyperfine structure of the ground state of erbium doped yttrium orthosilicate is analyzed with the use of electron paramagnetic resonance experiments in a tunable microwave resonator. This work was prompted by the disagreement between the measurements made in zero magnetic field [Phys. Rev. B, 94, 075117, (2016)] and a previously published spin Hamiltonian, which is derived from standard EPR measurements at 9.5 GHz [Phys. Rev. B, 74, 214409, (2006)]. The ability to vary magnetic field strength, resonator frequency, and the orientation of our sample enabled us to monitor how the frequencies…

The second-order corrections to the Breit -- Rabi formula are calculated and discussed. The results can be used for a precise determination of nuclear magnetic moments from $g$ factor experiments.
An overview is presented of laser spectroscopy experiments with cold, trapped, highly-charged ions, which will be performed at the HITRAP facility at GSI in Darmstadt (Germany). These high-resolution measurements of ground state hyperfine splittings will be three orders of magnitude more precise than previous measurements. Moreover, from a comparison of measurements of the hyperfine splittings in hydrogen- and lithium-like ions of the same isotope, QED effects at high electromagnetic fields can be determined within a few percent. Several candidate ions suited for these laser spectroscopy studi…
We make precise calculation of hyperfine structure of $S$-states in muonic ions of lithium, beryllium and boron in quantum electrodynamics. Corrections of orders $α^5$ and $α^6$ due to the vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil in first and second orders of perturbation theory are taken into account. We obtain estimates of the total values of hyperfine splittings which can be used for a comparison with future experimental data.
The ground state hyperfine splitting of light muon-electron ions of lithium, beryllium, boron and helium is calculated on the basis of analytical perturbation theory in terms of small parameters of the fine structure constant and electron-muon mass ratio. The corrections of vacuum polarization, nuclear structure and recoil effects and electron vertex corrections are taken into account. The dependence of the corrections on the nucleus charge Z is studied. The obtained total values of hyperfine splitting intervals can be used for comparison with future experimental data.

To construct the particle interaction operator in momentum space we use the tensor method of projection operators on states with definite quantum numbers of total atomic momentum F and total muon momentum j. We take into account vacuum polarization, relativistic, quadruple and structure corrections of orders $α^4$, $α^5$ and $α^6$. The obtained numerical values of hyperfine splittings can be used for a comparison with future experimental data of …
Advanced techniques for manipulation of internal states, standard in atomic physics, are demonstrated for a charged molecular species for the first time. We address individual hyperfine states of ro-vibrational levels of a diatomic ion by optical excitation of individual hyperfine transitions, and achieve controlled transfer of population into a selected hyperfine state. We use molecular hydrogen ions (HD^{+}) as a model system and employ a novel frequency-comb-based, continuous-wave 5 \mum laser spectrometer. The achieved spectral resolution is the highest obtained so far in the optical domai…

The obtained results establish the ground to determine the neutron halo in $^{11}$Be.

Hyperfine-structures of highly charged ions (HCIs) are favourable spectroscopic targets for exploring fundamental physics as well as nuclear properties. Recent proposals of HCI atomic clocks highlight their importance, especially for many-electron HCIs, and they have been theoretically investigated by refining atomic-structure calculations. Nonetheless, no established spectroscopic method is currently available to verify these theoretical calculations. Here, we demonstrate hyperfine-structure-resolved laser spectroscopy of HCIs in an electron beam ion trap plasma, employing the magnetic-dipole…
