We report the stability and electronic structures of the boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) with diameters below 4 A by semi-empirical quantum mechanical molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations. Among them (3,0), (3,1), (2,2), (4,0), (4,1) and (3,2) BNNTs can be stable well over room temperature. These small BNNTs become globally stable when encapsulated in a larger BNNT. It is found that the energy gaps and work functions of these small BNNTs are strongly dependent on their chirality and diameters. The small zigzag BNNTs become desirable semiconductors and have peculiar distribution of nearly free electron states due to strong hybridization effect. When such a small BNNT is inserted in a larger one, the energy gap of the formed double-walled BNNT can even be much reduced due to the coupled effect of wall buckling difference and NFE-pi hybridization.
The electronic spectra for double-wall zigzag and armchair nanotubes are found. The influence of nanotube curvatures on the electronic spectra is also calculated. Our finding that the outer shell is hole doped by the inner shell is in the difference between Fermi levels of individual shells which originate from the different hybridization of pi-orbital. The shift and rotation of the inner nanotube with respect to the outer nanotube are investigated. We found stable semimetal characteristics of the armchair DWNTs in regard of the shift and rotation of the inner nanotube. We predict the shift of…
We propose a new theoretical interpretation of the electron energy-loss spectroscopy results of Pichler {\it et al.} on bulk carbon nanotube samples. The experimentally found nondispersive modes have been attributed by Pichler {\it et al.} to interband excitations between localized states polarized perpendicular to the nanotube axis. This interpretation has been challenged by a theorist who attributed the modes to optical plasmons carrying nonzero angular momenta. We point out that both interpretations suffer from difficulties. From our theoretical results of the loss functions for individual …
Several intramolecular junctions (IMJs) connecting two metallic (11, 8) and (9, 6) carbon nanotubes along their common axis have been realized by using a layer-divided technique to the nanotubes and introducing the topological defects. Atomic structure of each IMJ configuration is optimized with a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) and the universal force field (UFF) method, based upon which a four-orbital tight-binding calculation is made on its electronic properties. Different topological defect structures and their distributions on the IMJ interfaces have been found, showing dec…
We report density functional study of alternate fullerene-like cage structures and finite closed capped single-wall nanotubes of aluminum nitride. The cages and nanotubes studied are modeled as Al24N24, Al28N28, Al32N32, Al36N36, Al48N48, and Al96N96. The structure optimization and calculation of the electronic structure, vertical ionization potential, and the electron affinity are performed at the all electron level by the analytic Slater-Roothaan method, using polarized Gaussian basis set of double zeta quality. All structures are energetically stable with binding energy of about 10-11 eV pe…
Carbon nanotubes are the focus of considerable research efforts due to their fascinating physical properties. They provide an excellent model system for the study of one dimensional materials and molecular electronics. The chirality of nanotubes can lead to very different electronic behaviours, either metallic or semiconducting. Their electronic spectrum consists of a series of Van Hove singularities defining a bandgap for semiconducting tubes and molecular orbitals at the corresponding energies. A promising way to tune the nanotubes electronic properties for future applications is to use dopi…
Density functional methods have been used to calculate the electronic properties of aligned smalldiameter single-walled carbon nanotubes under hydrostatic pressures. Abrupt pressure induced semiconductor-metal and metal-semiconductor transitions concomitant with changes in structure are observed. Novel and unexpected unit cell nanotube cross-sections are found. These tubes are observed to form interlinking structures at very high pressures. The large changes in electronic structure and the ability of different small diameter nanotubes to respond in different pressure regimes suggest their use …
We show that the presence of electrically insulating graphite oxide (GO) within a single wall carbon nanotube network strongly enhances electrical conductivity, whereas reduced graphite oxide, even though electrically conductive, suppresses electrical conductivity within a composite network with single wall carbon nanotubes. Measurements of Young modulus and of Raman spectra strongly support our interpretation of the indirect role of the oxide groups, present in graphite oxide within the single wall carbon nanotubes/graphite oxide composite, through electronic doping of metallic single wall ca…
The atomic models of nanotubes for layered FeSe, LiFeAs, SrFe2As2, and LnFeAsO - the parent phases of so-called 11, 111, 122, and 1111 groups of newly discovered family of iron-based high temperature superconductors are proposed. On example of SrFe2As2 the electronic properties of predicted nanotubes are examined and discussed in comparison with those for the corresponding single layer and the crystal.
We present the first-principles study of effects of the charge dopants such as Cesium and Iodine encapsulated on the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes. An encapsulated cesium atom donates an electron to the nanotube and produces donor-like states below the conduction bands. In contrast, an iodine trimer (I$_{3}$) accepts an electron from the nanotube and produces an acceptor-like state above the valance band maximum. We find that a Cs atom inside a metallic armchair carbon nanotube gives rise to spatial oscillations of the density of states near the Fermi level.
Interaction of single-walled carbon nanotubes with electron donor and acceptor molecules causes significant changes in the electronic and Raman spectra, the relative proportion of the metallic species increasing on electron donation through molecular charge transfer, as also verified by electrical resistivity measurements.
The electronic and piezoelectric properties of the boron nitride (BN) nanotubes are investigated with the hybrid density functional (B3LYP) method. We first study bulk h-BN and BN sheet and find that the B3LYP band structure and energy gap are consistent with the GW results. The B3LYP band gap is larger than the LDA one by about 1.8 eV for both zigzag and armchair nanotubes with various radius. We give an alternative interpretation that the optical absorption lines at 4.45 eV might be due to the electron transition in small zigzag BN nanotubes. The piezoelectric constant from the B3LYP method …
A first-principles study of the electronic polarization of BN and AlN nanotubes and their graphitic sheets under an external electric field has been performed. We found that the polarization per atom of zigzag nanotubes increases with decreasing diameter while that of armchair nanotubes decreases. The variation of the polarization is related to the exterior angle of the bonds around the B or Al atoms rather than that around the N atoms. The increase in the polarization of the zigzag nanotubes with decreasing diameter is caused by the large variation of the exterior angle when they are wrapped …
We have studied the binding energies and electronic structures of metal (Ti, Al, Au) chains adsorbed on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) using first principles methods. Our calculations have shown that titanium is much more favored energetically over gold and aluminum to form a continuous chain on a variety of SWNTs. The interaction between titanium and carbon nanotube significantly modifies the electronic structures around Fermi energy for both zigzag and armchair tubes. The delocalized 3d electrons from the titanium chain generate additional states in the band gap regions of the semicondu…
Quantum interference has dramatic effects on electronic transport through nanotube contacts. In optimal configuration the intertube conductance can approach that of a perfect nanotube ($4e^2/h$). The maximum conductance increases rapidly with the contact length up to 10 nm, beyond which it exhibits long wavelength oscillations. This is attributed to the resonant cavity-like interference phenomena in the contact region. For two concentric nanotubes symmetry breaking reduces the maximum intertube conductance from $4e^2/h$ to $2e^2/h$. The phenomena discussed here can serve as a foundation for bu…
We have studied the dynamics of electrons in single wall carbon nanotubes using femtosecond time-resolved photoemission. The lifetime of electrons excited to the pi* bands is found to decrease continuously from 130 fs at 0.2 eV down to less than 20 fs at energies above 1.5 eV with respect to the Fermi level. This should lead to a significant lifetime--induced broadening of the characteristic van Hove singularities in the nanotube DOS.
The current/voltage curve of metallic carbon nanotubes (CNTs) displays at high bias a sudden increase of the resistivity due to the scattering of electrons with phonons having an anomalously-high population (hot phonons). Here, we show that it is possible to improve the electrical performances of metallic CNTs by C13 isotope enrichment. In fact, isotopic disorder creates additional channels for the hot-phonon deexcitation, reduces their population and, thus, the nanotube high-bias differential-resistance. This is an extraordinary case where disorder improves the electronic transport.
quasi-one-dimensional (1D) titania nanostructures - single-walled nanotubes formed by rolling [101] planes of TiO$_2$ (anatase phase) are modeled and their electronic properties and bond orders indices are studied using the tight-binding band theory. We show that all zigzag (n,0)- and armchair (n,n)-like nanotubes are uniformly semiconducting, and the band gap trends to vanish as the tube diameters decrease. It was established that the zigzag (n,0) nanotubes configurations are more likely to form when the diameters are larger 1 nm. The Ti-O covalent bonds were found to be the strongest interac…
Geometric optimization and electronic properties of Stone-Wales defective antimonene nanotubes are calculated by the method of first -principle calculations based on density functional theory. Various nanotubes are investigated according to the possible orientations of zigzag/armchair nanostructures when Stone-Wales defects are formed. The band structures, partial density of states and atomic orbitals are calculated to reveal the mechanism of influence of Stone-Wales defects on antimonene nanotubes. When the structure of antimonene changes from monolayer to tube, the indirect gap semiconductor…
The electronic properties of carbon nanotubes in a uniform transverse field are investigated within a single orbital tight-binding model. For doped nanotubes, the dielectric function is found to depend not only on symmetry of the tube, but also on radius and Fermi level position. Bandgap opening/closing is predicted for zigzag tubes, while it is found that armchair tubes always remain metallic, which is explained by the symmetry in their configuration. The bandstructures for both types are considerably modified when the field strength is large enough to mix neighboring subbands.
We use electrostatic force microscopy and scanned gate microscopy to probe the conducting properties of carbon nanotubes at room temperature. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to be diffusive conductors, while metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes are ballistic conductors over micron lengths. Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to have a series of large barriers to conduction along their length. These measurements are also used to probe the contact resistance and locate breaks in carbon nanotube circuits.
Spatially resolved photocurrent measurements on carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNFETs) operated in various transport regimes are reported. It is demonstrated that the photocurrents measured at different biasing conditions provide access to the electronic band structure profile of the nanotube channel. A comparison of the profiles with the device switched into n- or p-type states clearly evidences the impact of chemical doping from the ambient. Moreover, we show that scanning photocurrent microscopy constitutes an effective and facile technique for the quantitative determination of t…
A recent exciting experiment by Ghosh et al. reported that the flow of an ion-containing liquid such as water through bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes induces a voltage in the nanotubes that grows logarithmically with the flow velocity v0. We propose an explanation for this observation. Assuming that the liquid molecules nearest the nanotube form a 2D solid-like monolayer pinned through the adsorbed ions to the nanotubes, the monolayer sliding will occur by elastic loading followed by local yield (stick-slip). The drifting adsorbed ions produce a voltage in the nanotube through electr…
Atomic models of quasi-one-dimensional 1D vanadium oxide nanostructures - nanotubes of various morphology (cylinder or scroll-like) formed by rolling (010) single layers of V2O5 are constructed and their electronic properties are studied using the tight-binding band theory. Compared to the cylindrical zigzag (n,0) and armchair (n,n)-like nanotubes, which are uniformly semi-conducting with the bang gap of about 2.5-2.7 eV, the band gap of the scroll-like tubes trends significantly to vanish (up to about 0.1 eV) depending on the atomic configurations of the tubes and inter-wall distances.
Finite magnesium oxide nanotubes are investigated. Stacks of four parallel squares, hexagons, octagons, and decagons are constructed and studied by the pseudopotential density functional theory within the local-density approximation. Optimized structures are slightly distorted stacks of polygons. These clusters are insulators and the band gap of 8.5 eV is constant over an investigated range of the diameters of stacked polygonal rings. Using the L"owdin population analysis a charge transfer towards the oxygen atoms is estimated as 1.4, which indicates that the mixed ionocovalent bonding exists …
We have studied the electronic structure and charge-carrier dynamics of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and nanotube ropes using optical and electron-spectroscopic techniques. The electronic structure of semiconducting SWNTs in the band-gap region is analyzed using near-infrared absorption spectroscopy. A semi-empirical expression for $E_{11}^{\rm S}$ transition energies, based on tight-binding calculations is found to give striking agreement with experimental data. Time-resolved PL from dispersed SWNT-micelles shows a decay with a time constant of about 15 ps. Using time-resol…
A density functional theory study of the structural and electronic properties and relative stability of narrow SP3 silicon nanotubes of different growth orientations is presented. All nanotubes studied and their corresponding wire structures are found to be meta-stable with the wires being more energetically stable. Silicon nanotubes show a dramatic bandgap increase of up to 68% with respect to the corresponding wires. Furthermore, a direct relation between the bandgap of the system and the molar fraction of the passivating hydrogen contents is found. These results suggest that by careful cont…
Unusual physical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes have started a search for similar tubular structures of other elements. In this paper, we present a theoretical analysis of single-wall nanotubes of silicon and group III-V compounds. Starting from precursor graphene-like structures we investigated the stability, energetics and electronic structure of zigzag and armchair tubes using first-principles pseudopotential plane wave method and finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations. We showed that (n,0) zigzag and (n,n) armchair nanotubes of silicon having n > 6 are sta…
The effect of purification on room temperature electronic transport properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) was studied by submerging samples into liquid mercury. The conductance plots of purified SWNTs showed plateaus, indicating weak dependence of the electrical resistance on the length of the tube connecting the electrodes, providing evidence of quasi-ballistic conduction in SWNTs. The electronic mean free path of the purified SWNTs reached a few microns, which is longer than that of the as-produced SWNTs, and which is consistent with the calculation based on the scattering by aco…
By means of pseudopotential calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) we studied the effect of hydrogenation on electronic properties of armchair single-wall carbon nanotubes. The calculations demonstrate strong preference for formation of monoatomic H chains along the (5,5) nanotube axis with the H binding in an infinite H chain reaching the value of 2.58 eV per atom. Upon formation of chains of H adatoms, initially metallic (5,5) nanotubes change electronic structure to the semiconducting. The opening of the band gap of $\sim$0.6 eV is accompanied with antiferromagnetic coupling …
We present many-body \textit{ab initio} calculations of the electronic and optical properties of semiconducting zigzag carbon nanotubes under uniaxial strain. The GW approach is utilized to obtain the quasiparticle bandgaps and is combined with the Bethe-Salpeter equation to obtain the optical absorption spectrum. We find that the dependence of the electronic bandgaps on strain is more complex than previously predicted based on tight-binding models or density-functional theory. In addition, we show that the exciton energy and exciton binding energy depend significantly on strain, with variatio…
The normal paper used in any printer is among the cheapest flexible organic materials that exist. We demonstrate that we can print on paper high-frequency circuits tunable with an applied dc voltage. This is possible with the help of an ink containing functionalized carbon nanotubes and water. After the water is evaporated from the paper, the nanotubes remain steadily imprinted on paper, showing a semiconducting behaviour and tunable electrical properties.
In this paper, structural and electronic properties and stability of (10, 0) born nitride nanotube (BNNT) are considered within density functional theory by doping group IV elements of the periodic table. The HOMO-LUMO gap has been strongly modified and treated a dual manner by choosing B or N sites for dopant atoms. Formation energy calculation shows that B site doping is more stable than N site doping. Results also show that all dopants turn the pristine BNNT into a p-type semiconductor except for carbon-doped BNNT at B site.
We investigate the electronic structures of some defective boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) under transverse electric fields within density-functional theory. (16,0) BNNTs with antisite, carbon substitution, single vacancy, and Stone-Wales 5775 defects are studied. Under transverse electric fields, the band gaps of the defective BNNTs are reduced, similar to the pristine ones. The energy levels of the defect states vary with the transverse electric field directions, due to the different electrostatic potential shift at the defect sites induced by the electric fields. Therefore, besides electron…
During the last years great attention has been given to the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles. In this work we investigated the stability of small magnetic particles inside magnetic nanotubes. Multisegmented nanotubes were tested in order to optimize the stability of the particle inside the nanotubes. Our results evidenced that multisegmented nanotubes are more efficient to entrap the particles at temperatures up to hundreds of kelvins.
Excess heat generated in integrated circuits is one of the major problems of modern electronics. Surface phonon-polariton scattering is shown here to be the dominant mechanism for hot charge carrier energy dissipation in a nanotube device fabricated on a polar substrate, such as $SiO_2$. Using microscopic quantum models the Joule losses were calculated for the various energy dissipation channels as a function of the electric field, doping, and temperature. The polariton mechanism must be taken into account to obtain an accurate estimate of the effective thermal coupling of the non-suspended na…
We present a first-principles study of semiconducting carbon nanotubes adsorbed on the unpassivated Si(100) surface. We have found metallicity for the combined system caused by n-doping of the silicon slab representing the surface by the SWNT. We confirm this metallicity for nanotubes of different diameters and chiral angles, and find the effect to be independent of the orientation of the nanotubes on the surface. We also present adsorption energetics and configurations which show semiconducting SWNTs farther apart from the surface and transferring less charge, in comparison with metallic SWNT…
The geometrical and electronic structures of the 4 Å diameter perfect and deformed (5, 3) single-walled gold nanotube (SWGT) have been studied based upon the density-functional theory in the local-density approximation (LDA). The calculated relaxed geometries show clearly significant deviations from those of the ideally rolled triangular gold sheet. It is found that the different strains have different effects on the electronic structures and density of states of the SWGTs. And the small shear strain can reduce the binding energy per gold atom of the deformed SWGT, which is consistent with the…
We report benchmark calculations of electroabsorption in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes to provide motivation to experimentalists to perform electroabsorption measurement on these systems. We show that electroabsorption can detect continuum bands in different energy manifolds, even as other nonlinear absorption measurements have failed to detect them. Direct determination of the binding energies of excitons in higher manifolds thereby becomes possible. We also find that electroabsorption can provide evidence for Fano-type coupling between the second exciton and the lowest contin…
A first-principles investigation of the electronic and quantum transport properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes doped with nitrogen and boron atoms is presented. Concentric nanotube sidewalls separated by the typical graphitic van der Waals bond distance are found to strongly interact upon incorporation of doping atoms in the hexagonal networks. The local perturbation caused by the doping atoms extends over both shells due to a hybridization of their electronic states, yielding a reduction of the backscattering efficiency as compared with two independent single-walled nanotubes. A multi-…
The electronic structures of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) doped by different organic molecules under a transverse electric field were investigated via first-principles calculations. The external field reduces the energy gap of BNNT, thus makes the molecular bands closer to the BNNT band edges and enhances the charge transfers between BNNT and molecules. The effects of the electric field direction on the band structure are negligible. The electric field shielding effect of BNNT to the inside organic molecules is discussed. Organic molecule doping strongly modifies the optical property of BNN…
We have applied the quantum Monte Carlo method and tight-binding modelling to calculate the binding energy of biexcitons in semiconductor carbon nanotubes for a wide range of diameters and chiralities. For typical nanotube diameters we find that biexciton binding energies are much larger than previously predicted from variational methods, which easily brings the biexciton binding energy above the room temperature threshold.
Prompted by recent reports on $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ graphene superlattices with intrinsic inter-valley interactions, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic properties of periodically nitrogen-doped graphene and carbon nanotube nanostructures. In these structures, nitrogen atoms substitute one-sixth of the carbon atoms in the pristine hexagonal lattices with exact periodicity to form perfect $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ superlattices of graphene and carbon nanotubes. Multiple nanostructures of $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ graphene ribbons and carbon nanotubes ar…
Combining a classical force field, a tight-binding model, and first-principles calculations, we have studied structural, electronic, and optical properties of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) bundles under hydrostatic pressure. We find that the outer tube acts as a protection shield for the inner tube and the inner tube increases the structure stability and the ability to resist the pressure of the outer tube. Moreover, the collapsed structures of the double-walled carbon nanotube bundle called ``parallel'' and ``in-between'' are more stable than the one called ``herringbone''. The structu…
We performed studies of coherent electronic transport through a single walled carbon nanotube. In the calculations multiple scattering on the contacts and interference processes were taken into account. Conductance is a composition of contributions from different channels. We studied also spin--dependent transport in the system with ferromagnetic electrodes. The magnetoresistance is large and shows large oscillations, it can be even negative in some cases.
Contrary to recent reports, we show that the electronic properties of phosphorene nanotubes are surprisingly rich and much more complex than previously assumed. We find that all phosphorene nanotubes exhibit an intricate direct-to-indirect bandgap transition as the nanotube diameter decreases - a unique property not identified in any prior studies (which claimed either direct or indirect band gaps only) that we uncover with large-scale DFT calculations. We address these previous inconsistencies by detailed analyses of orbital interactions, which reveal that the strain associated with decreasin…
We report calculations of the effective electronic response of aligned multishell carbon nanotubes. A local graphite-like dielectric tensor is assigned to every point of the multishell tubules, and the effective transverse dielectric function of the composite is computed by solving Maxwell's equations. Calculations of both real and imaginary parts of the effective dielectric function are presented, for various values of the filling fraction and the ratio of the internal and external radii of hollow tubules. Our full calculations indicate that the experimentally measured macroscopic dielectric …
We study by density functional and large scale tight-binding transport calculations the electronic structure, magnetism and transport properties of the recently proposed graphene ribbons with edges rolled to form nanotubes. Edges with armchair nanotubes present magnetic moments localized either in the tube or the ribbon and metallic or half-metallic character, depending on the symmetry of the junction. These properties have potential for spin valve and spin filter devices with advantages over other proposed systems. Edges with zigzag nanotubes are either metallic or semiconducting without affe…
We studied the temperature stability of the endohedral fullerene molecule, N@C60, inside single-wall carbon nanotubes using electron spin resonance spectroscopy. We found that the nitrogen escapes at higher temperatures in the encapsulated material as compared to its pristine, crystalline form. The temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation time, T_1, of the encapsulated molecule is significantly shorter than that of the crystalline material, which is explained by the interaction of the nitrogen spin with the conduction electrons of the nanotubes.
The electronic properties of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have attracted much attention because they could lead to nano-sized electronic devices. Using chemical vapor deposition (CVD), MWNTs are produced in large quantities at a low cost. CVD-produced MWNTs, however, generally contain a considerable amount of structural defects due to their low temperature synthesis. Since these defects act as scattering centers in electron transport and thus limit the electronic mean free path (EMFP), high-temperature annealing should lengthen the EMFP. This is based on the previous experiments in whic…
We present a study on the quantum transport properties of chemically functionalized metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) with lengths reaching the micrometer scale. First-principles calculations evidence that, for coaxial tubes separated by the typical graphitic van der Waals-bond distance, the chemical modification of the outer wall with sp$^3$-type defects affects the electronic structure of both the outer and the inner tube, which reduces significantly the charge transport capability of the DWNT. For larger spacing between sidewalls, the conductivity of the outer wall decreases w…
Fano resonance spectra for the G band in metallic carbon nanotubes are calculated as a function of laser excitation energy in which the origin of the resonance is given by an interference between the continuous electronic Raman spectra and the discrete phonon spectra. We found that the second-order scattering process of the non-zero q electron-electron interaction is more relevant to the continuous spectra rather than the q = 0 first-order process because the q = 0 direct Coulomb interaction vanishes due to the symmetry of the two sublattices of a nanotube. We also show that the RBM spectra of…
Metallocenes can be encapsulated inside the carbon nanotubes. The structural, energetic and electronic properties of organometallic MCp2@SWCNT are obtained from DFT method. We verify that such encapsulation is noncovalent functionalization, and examined binding energies and charge transfers of MCp2@(16,0)SWCNT systems. Consistent with recent experimental findings, the optimal distance between FeCp2 center and near tube-wall is 4.7 (5.1) Å for the configuration where MCp2's five-fold axis is parallel (vertical) to nanotube axis, while the minimal diameter is 9.4 (10.2) Å to exothermically encap…
We calculated the effects of structural distortions on the electronic structure of carbon nanotubes. The key modification of the electronic structure brought about by bending a nanotube involves an increased mixing of $σ$ and $π$-states. This mixing leads to an enhanced density-of-states in the valence band near the Fermi energy region. While in a straight tube the states accessible for electrical conduction are essentially pure C($2p_π$)-states, they acquire significant C($2sp_σ$) character upon bending. Bending also leads to a charge polarization of the C-C bonds in the deformed region remin…
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have many interesting properties; they may be metallic or semiconducting depending on their diameter and helicity of the graphene sheet. Hydrostatic or quasi-hydrostatic high pressures can probe many electronic features. Resistance - temperature measurements in SWNTs from normal condition and under 0.4 GPa of quasi-hydrostatic pressures reveal a semiconducting-like behavior. From 0.5 to about 2.0 GPa the resistance changes to a Kondo-like feature due to magnetic impurities used to catalyse the nanotube formation. Above 2.0 GPa, they become metallic and at…
The band structure and size-scaling of electronic properties in self-assembled cyclic oligothiophene nanotubes are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) for the first time. In these unique tubular aggregates, the π-π stacking interactions between adjacent monomers provide pathways for charge transport and energy migration along the periodic one-dimensional nanostructure. In order to simultaneously describe both the π-π stacking interactions and the global electronic band structure of these nanotubes, we utilize a dispersion-corrected B3LYP-D hybrid functional in conjunction with a…
Based on a numerical ab initio study, we discuss a structure model for a broad boron sheet, which is the analog of a single graphite sheet, and the precursor of boron nanotubes. The sheet has linear chains of sp hybridized sigma bonds lying only along its armchair direction, a high stiffness, and anisotropic bonds properties. The puckering of the sheet is explained as a mechanism to stabilize the sp sigma bonds. The anisotropic bond properties of the boron sheet lead to a two-dimensional reference lattice structure, which is rectangular rather than triangular. As a consequence the chiral angle…
The electronic and transport property of a radially deformed double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) intramolecular junction (IMJ) has been studied by the tight-binding (TB) model combined with the first-principle calculations. The geometrical structures of the DWNT IMJ have been first optimized in energy by the universal force field (UFF) method. It is found that when heavily squashed, the DWNT will become an insulator-coated metallic wire, and the conductance near the Fermi level has been significantly changed by the radial squash. Specially, several resonance conductance peaks appear at some e…
We have performed ab initio calculations to systematically investigate electronic properties and magnetism of insulating non-magnetic beryllium monoxide nanotubes induced by non-magnetic sp impurities: boron, carbon and nitrogen. We found that in the presence of these sp impurities, which replace oxygen atoms, the non-magnetic BeO NTs transform into magnetic semiconductors, which acquire magnetization caused by spin splitting of (B,C,N) 2p states located in the forbidden gap of a BeO tube. The magnetic moments of the impurities vary from 0.65 to 1.60. On the contrary, when (B,C,N) dopants subs…
Oxide materials offer a wide range of interesting physical and chemical properties. Even more versatile behavior of oxides is seen at the nanoscale, qualifying these materials for a number of applications. In this study we used DFT calculations to investigate the physical and chemical properties of small hexagonal MgO nanotubes of different length. We analyzed the effect of Li, B, C, N, and F doping on the properties of the nanotubes. We find that all dopants favor the edge positions when, incorporated into the nanotubes. Doping results in the net magnetization whose value depends on the type …
