Prompted by recent reports on $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ graphene superlattices with intrinsic inter-valley interactions, we perform first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic properties of periodically nitrogen-doped graphene and carbon nanotube nanostructures. In these structures, nitrogen atoms substitute one-sixth of the carbon atoms in the pristine hexagonal lattices with exact periodicity to form perfect $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ superlattices of graphene and carbon nanotubes. Multiple nanostructures of $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ graphene ribbons and carbon nanotubes are explored, and all configurations show nonmagnetic and metallic behaviors. The transport properties of $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ graphene and carbon nanotube superlattices are calculated utilizing the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism combined with density functional theory. The transmission spectrum through the pristine and $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ armchair carbon nanotube heterostructure shows quantized behavior under certain circumstances.
Using first-principles calculations, we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of partially open zigzag carbon nanotube (CNT) superlattices. It is found that depending on their opening degree, these superlattices can exhibit multiple localized states around the Fermi energy. More importantly, some electronic states confined in some parts of the structure even have special magnetic orderings. We demonstrate that, as a proof of principle, some partially open zigzag CNT superlattices are by themselves giant (100%) magnetoresistive devices. Furthermore, the localized(and spin-polarized) st…
We consider metallic carbon nanotubes with an overlying unidirectional electrical chiral (wavevector out of the radial direction, where the axial direction is included) superlattice potential. We show that for superlattices with a wavevector close to the axial direction, the electron velocity assumes the same value as for nanotubes without superlattice. Due to an increased number of phonons with different momenta but lower electron-phonon scattering probabilities, we obtain a large enhancement of the high-voltage conductance and current sustainability in comparison with the nanotube without su…
We demonstrate that one-dimensional moiré patterns, analogous to those found in twisted bilayer graphene, can arise in collapsed chiral carbon nanotubes. Resorting to a combination of approaches, namely, molecular dynamics to obtain the relaxed geometries and tight-binding calculations validated against ab initio modeling, we find that magic angle physics occur in collapsed carbon nanotubes. Velocity reduction, flat bands and localization in AA regions with diminishing moiré angle are revealed, showing a magic angle close to 1$^{\rm o}$. From the spatial extension of the AA regions and the wid…
We numerically investigate the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes with inter-valley coupling, e.g., in \sqrt{3}N \times \sqrt{3}N and 3N \times 3N superlattices. By taking the \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} graphene superlattice as an example, we show that tailoring the bulk graphene superlattice results in rich structural configurations of nanoribbons and nanotubes. After studying the electronic characteristics of the corresponding armchair and zigzag nanoribbon geometries, we find that the linear bands of carbon nanotubes can lead to the Klein tunnelling-l…
We investigate the electronic band structure and transport properties of periodically alternating mono- and bi-layer graphene superlattices (MBLG SLs). In such MBLG SLs, there exists a zero-averaged wave vector (zero-$\overline{k}$) gap that is insensitive to the lattice constant. This zero-$\overline{k}$ gap can be controlled by changing both the ratio of the potential widths and the interlayer coupling coefficient of the bilayer graphene. We also show that there exist extra Dirac points; the conditions for these extra Dirac points are presented analytically. Lastly, we demonstrate that the e…
Graphene-based superlattice (SL) formed by a periodic gap modulation is studied theoretically using a Dirac-type Hamiltonian. Analyzing the dispersion relation we have found that new Dirac points arise in the electronic spectrum under certain conditions. As a result, the gap between conduction and valence minibands disappears. The expressions for the position of these Dirac points in ${\bf k}$-space and threshold value of the potential for their emergence were obtained. At some parameters of the system, we have revealed interface states which form the top of the valence miniband.
Different atomistic registry between the layers forming the inner and outer nanotubes can form one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) moiré superlattices. Unlike the two-dimensional (2D) vdW moiré superlattices, effects of 1D vdW moiré superlattices on electronic and optical properties in 1D moiré superlattices are not well understood, and they are often neglected. In this Perspective, we summarize new experimental observations and theoretical perspectives related to interlayer interactions in double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs), a representative 1D vdW moiré system. Our discussion will f…
Based on the van der Waals interaction, the periodically nonlinear potential of a singe-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) with finite length in an infinite length SWNT is analytically obtained. It is found that the inner SWNT can oscillate in the outer SWNT with frequency beyond ten Gigahertz, even up to a hundred Gigahertz.
We investigate theoretically the feasibility of generation and amplification of terahertz radiation in aligned achiral carbon nanotubes (zigzag and armchair) in comparison with a superlattice in the presence of a constant (dc) and high-frequency (ac) electric fields. The electric current density expression is derived using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation with a constant relaxation time with the electric field applied along the nanotube axis. Our analysis on the current density versus electric field characteristics demonstrates negative differential conductivity at high frequency…
Based on first-principles calculations we predict that periodically repeated junctions of armchair graphene nanoribbons of different widths form superlattice structures. In these superlattice heterostructures the width and the energy gap are modulated in real space and specific states are confined in certain segments. Orientation of constituent nanoribbons, their width and length, the symmetry of the junction are the structural parameters to engineer electronic properties of these quantum structures. Not only the size modulation, but also composition modulation, such as periodically repeated, …
The periodically poled ferroelectric wafer is a two-dimensional phononic superlattice. The important applications of such a solid include novel ultrasonic transducers at the micro/nano-scale for low intensity ultra-sonography, ferroelectric data storage, and development of very high frequency chips for next generation communication and information technologies, and others. Usually, the transformations between the electrical and mechanical energies are required in the applications. In this work, we find the frequency characteristics for an effective acousto-electric interaction in a two-dimensi…
We report preparation of large area quasi-1D monolayer graphene superlattices on a prototypical high index surface Cu(410)-O and characterization by Raman spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The periodically stepped substrate gives a 1D modulation to graphene, forming a superlattice of the same super-periodicity. Consequently the moire pattern is also quasi-1D, with a different periodicity. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements revealed new Dirac points for…
The behavior of a nanodevice based upon double-walled carbon nanotube oscillators driven by periodically applied thermal gradients (7 and 17 K/nm) is investigated by numerical calculations and classical molecular dynamics simulations. Our results indicate that thermophoresis can be effective to initiate the oscillator and that suitable heat pulses may provide an appropriate way to tune its behavior. Sustained regular oscillatory as well as chaotic motions were observed for the systems investigated in this work.
We study theoretically the in-plane electromagnetic response and the exciton-plasmon interactions for an experimentally feasible carbon nanotube (CN) film systems composed of parallel aligned periodic semiconducting CN arrays embedded in an ultrathin finite-thickness dielectric. For homogeneous single-CN films, the intertube coupling and thermal broadening bring the exciton and interband plasmon resonances closer together. They can even overlap due to the inhomogeneous broadening for films composed of array mixtures with a slight CN diameter distribution. In such systems the real part of the r…
Interactions between stacked two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals can radically change their properties, leading to essentially new materials in terms of the electronic structure. Here we show that monolayers placed on an atomically flat substrate can be forced to undergo a buckling transition, which results in periodically strained superlattices. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and support from numerical simulations, we show that such lateral superlattices in graphene lead to a periodically modulated pseudo-magnetic field, which in turn creates a post-graphene material…
Using pre-designed trains of femtosecond optical pulses, we have selectively excited coherent phonons of the radial breathing mode of specific-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes within an ensemble sample. By analyzing the initial phase of the phonon oscillations, we prove that the tube diameter initially increases in response to ultrafast photoexcitation. Furthermore, from excitation profiles, we demonstrate that an excitonic absorption peak of carbon nanotubes periodically oscillates as a function of time when the tube diameter undergoes radial breathing mode oscillations.
We consider the first order differential equation with a sinusoidal nonlinearity and periodic time dependence, that is, the periodically driven overdamped pendulum. The problem is studied in the case that the explicit time-dependence has symmetries common to pure ac-driven systems. The only bifurcation that exists in the system is a degenerate pitchfork bifurcation, which describes an exchange of stability between two symmetric nonlinear modes. Using a type of Prufer transform to a pair of linear differential equations, we derive an approximate condition of the bifurcation. This approximation …
We identify the existence of various symmetry-protected topological states in one-dimensional superlattices with periodically modulated hopping amplitudes or on-site potentials, which can be characterized by the quantized Berry phase $π$ or the emergence of a pair of degenerate boundary states. It is shown that there may exist three types of topological phases, which are protected by the inversion symmetry, the chiral symmetry, and both of them, respectively, depending on the modulations, the odd or even modulation period. The connection between the hopping and potential modulations is also di…
The electronic transport properties of graphene-based superlattice structures are investigated. A graphene-based modulation-doped superlattice structure geometry is proposed and consist of periodically arranged alternate layers: InAs/graphene/GaAs/graphene/GaSb. Undoped graphene/GaAs/graphene structure displays relatively high conductance and enhanced mobilities at elevated temperatures unlike modulation-doped superlattice structure more steady and less sensitive to temperature and robust electrical tunable control on the screening length scale. Thermionic current density exhibits enhanced beh…
We report the first experimental observation of strong coupling effect in one-dimensional moiré crystals. We study one-dimensional double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) in which van der Waals-coupled two single nanotubes form one-dimensional moiré superlattice. We experimentally combine Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy and electron beam diffraction on the same individual DWCNTs to probe the optical transitions of structure-identified DWCNTs in the visible spectral range. Among more than 30 structure-identified DWCNTs examined, we experimentally observed and identified a drastic change of optic…
The dispersion relation for magnetoplasmons in a planar superlattice with periodically alternating regions of gapless and gapped modications of graphene has been derived within the frame of the random-phase approximation. The contribution of virtual transitions between the lower electron miniband and the upper hole miniband to the polarization operator has been taken into account in addition to the contribution of virtual intra-miniband transitions.
Plasmon collective excitations are studied in a planar graphene superlattice formed by periodically alternating regions of gapless graphene and of its gapped modification. The plasmon dispersion law is determined both for the quasi-one-dimensional case (the Fermi level is located within the minigap) and for the quasi-two-dimensional case (the Fermi level is located within the miniband). The problem concerning the absorption of modulated electromagnetic radiation at the excitation of plasmons is also considered.
We show that, if graphene is subjected to the potential from an external superlattice, a band gap develops at the Dirac point provided the superlattice potential has broken inversion symmetry. As a numerical example, we calculate the band structure of graphene in the presence of an external potential due to periodically patterned gates arranged in a triangular graphene superlattice (TGS) with broken inversion symmetry, and find that a band gap is created at both the original and "second generation" Dirac point. The gap can be controlled, in principle, by changing the external potential and the…
With the use of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation we have calculated a direct current (d.c) in undoped zigzag carbon nanotube (CN) by mixing two coherent electromagnetic waves with commensurate frequencies i.e and . This effect is attributed to the nonparabolicity of the electron energy band which is very strong in carbon nanotubes. We observed that the current is negative similar to that observed in superlattice. However if the phase shift lies between and there is an inversion and the current becomes positive. It is interesting to note that exhibit negative differential conductivity as ex…
Nanotubes show great promise for miniaturizing advanced technologies. Their exceptional physical properties are intimately related to their morphological and crystal structure. Circumferential faceting of multiwalled nanotubes reinforces their mechanical strength and alters their tribological and electronic properties. Here, the nature of this important phenomenon is fully rationalized in terms of interlayer registry patterns. Regardless of the nanotube identity (that is, diameter, chirality, chemical composition), faceting requires the matching of the chiral angles of adjacent layers. Above a…
Common models describing magnetotransport properties of periodically modulated two--dimensional systems often either directly start from a semiclassical approach or give results well conceivable within the semiclassical framework. Recently, magnetoresistance oscillations have been found on samples with strong unilateral modulation and short period (d=15 nm) which cannot be explained on a semiclassical level (magnetic breakdown). We use a simple fully quantum mechanical model which gives us both magnetoresistance data nicely comparing to the experiments and a good intuitive insight into the eff…
We analyze the energy spectrum of graphene in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and a unidirectionally periodic Zeeman field, focusing on the stability and location of Dirac points it may support. It is found that the Dirac points at the $K$ and $K'$ points are generically moved to other locations in the Brillouin zone, but that they remain present when the Zeeman field $\vecΔ(x)$ integrates to zero within a unit cell. A large variety of locations for the Dirac points is shown to be possible: when $\vecΔ\parallel \hat{z}$ they are shifted from their original locations along the direction per…
The hybridization of $σ$ and $π$ orbitals of carbon atoms in graphene depends on the surface curvature. Considering a single junction between flat and rippled graphene subsystems, it is found an accumulation of charge in the rippled subsystem due to Klein penetration phenomenon that gives rise to n-p junction. Using this fact, we show that the momentum distribution of electrons in ballisitically propagating beam can be selective without a waveguide, or external electric, and/or magnetic fields in graphene strip under experimentally feasible one-dimensional periodic potential. Such a potential …
Generation of direct current in zigzag carbon nanotubes due to harmonic mixing of two coherent electromagnetic waves is being considered. The electromagnetic waves have commensurate frequencies of omega and two omega. The rectification of the waves at high frequencies is quite smooth whiles at low frequencies there are some fluctuations. The nonohmicity observed in the I-Vcharacteristics is attributed to the nonparabolicity of the electron energy band which is very strong in carbon nanotubes because of high stark component. It is observed that the current falls off faster at lower electric fie…
We have studied the electronic excitation spectrum in periodically rippled graphene on Ru(0001) and flat, commensurate graphene on Ni(111) by means of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy and a combination of density functional theory and tight-binding approaches. We show that the periodic moiré superlattice originated by the lattice mismatch in graphene/Ru(0001) induces the emergence of an extra mode, which is not present in graphene/Ni(111). Contrary to the ordinary intra-band plasmon of doped graphene, the extra mode is robust in charge-neutral graphene/metal contacts, having i…
The optical absorption spectrums of nanomotors made from double-wall carbon nanotubes have been calculated with the time-dependent density functional based tight binding method. When the outer short tube of the nanomotor moves along or rotates around the inner long tube, the peaks in the spectrum will gradually evolve and may shift periodically, the amplitude of which can be as large as hundreds of meV. We show that the features and behaviors of the optical absorption spectrum could be used to monitor the mechanical motions of the double-wall carbon nanotube based nanomotor.
We investigate the emergence of extra Dirac points in the electronic structure of a periodically spaced barrier system, i.e., a superlattice, on single-layer graphene, using a Dirac-type Hamiltonian. Using square barriers allows us to find analytic expressions for the occurrence and location of these new Dirac points in k-space and for the renormalization of the electron velocity near them in the low-energy range. In the general case of unequal barrier and well widths the new Dirac points move away from the Fermi level and for given heights of the potential barriers there is a minimum and maxi…
We use large scale ab-initio calculations to describe electronic structures of graphene, graphene nanoribbons, and carbon nanotubes periodically perforated with nanopores. We disclose common features of these systems and develop a unified picture that permits us to analytically predict and systematically characterize metal-semiconductor transitions in nanocarbons with superlattices of nanopores of different sizes and types. These novel materials with highly tunable band structures have numerous potential applications in electronics, light detection, and molecular sensing.
We consider a superlattice of parallel metal tunnel junctions with a spatially non-homogeneous probability for electrons to tunnel. In such structures tunneling can be accompanied by electron scattering that conserves energy but not momentum. In the special case of a tunneling probability that varies periodically with period $a$ in the longitudinal direction, i.e., perpendicular to the junctions, electron tunneling is accompanied by "umklapp" scattering, where the longitudinal momentum changes by a multiple of $h/a$. We predict that as a result a sequence of metal-insulator transitions can be …

Here, we present a detailed study on low bias current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of graphene superlattice (GSL) resonant tunneling diode (RTD) with heterostructured substrate and series of grounded metallic planes placed over graphene sheet which induce periodically modulated Dirac gap and Fermi velocity barrier. We investigate the effect of GSL parameters on I-V characteristics within the Landauer-Buttiker formalism and adopted transfer matrix method. We show how the engineering these parameters results in multipeak NDR in proposed device. Moreover we provide a novel venue to control the ND…
We present a theoretical study of acoustic phonons amplification in Carbon Nanotubes (CNT). The phenomenon is via Cerenkov emission (CE) of acoustic phonons using intraband transitions proposed by Mensah et. al.,~\cite{1} in Semiconductor Superlattices (SSL) and confirmed in ~\cite{2}. From this, an asymmetric graph of $Γ^{CNT}$ on $\frac{V_d}{V_s}$ and $Ωτ$ were obtained where amplification ($Γ_{amp}^{CNT}$) $>>$ absorption ($Γ_{abs}^{CNT}$). The ratio, $\frac{\vert Γ_{amp}^{CNT}\vert}{\vertΓ_{abs}^{CNT}\vert}\approx 3.5$, at $V_d = 1.02V_s$, $ω_q = 3.0\ \mathrm{THz}$ and $T = 85\ K$ for scat…
Symmetry and localization properties of defect modes of a one-dimensional bi-component magnonic superlattice are theoretically studied. The magnonic superlattice can be seen as a periodic array of nanostripes, where stripes with different width, termed as defect stripes, are periodically introduced. By controlling the geometry of the defect stripes, a transition from dispersive to practically flat spin-wave defect modes can be observed inside the magnonic band gaps. It is shown that the spin-wave profile of the defect modes can be either symmetric or antisymmetric, depending on the geometry of…
The band structures of the periodic nanotube junctions are investigated by the effective mass theory and the tight binding model. The periodic junctions are constructed by introducing pairs of a pentagonal defect and a heptagonal defect periodically in the carbon nanotube. We treat the periodic junctions whose unit cell is composed by two kinds of metallic nanotubes with almost same radii, the ratio of which is between 0.7 and 1 . The discussed energy region is near the undoped Fermi level where the channel number is kept to two, so there are two bands. The energy bands are expressed with clos…
Interactions between localized plasmons in proximal nanostructures is a well-studied phenomenon. Here we explore plasmon plasmon interactions in connected extended systems. Such systems can now be easily produced using graphene. Specifically we employ the finite element method to study such interactions in graphene nanoribbon arrays with a periodically modulated electrochemical potential or number of layers. We find a rich variation in the resulting plasmonic resonances depending on the dimensions and the electrochemical potentials (doping) of the nanoribbon segments and the involvement of tra…
We show that superlattices based on zero-gap semiconductors such as graphene and mercury telluride exhibit characteristic Bloch--Zener oscillations that emerge from the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and multiple Zener tunneling between the electron and hole branch. We demonstrate this mechanism by means of wave packet dynamics in various spatially periodically modulated nanoribbons subject to an external bias field. The associated Bloch frequencies exhibit a peculiar periodic bias dependence which we explain within a two-band model. Supported by extensive numerical transport cal…
Electron-electron interactions strongly affect the behavior of low-dimensional systems. In one dimension (1D), arbitrarily weak interactions qualitatively alter the ground state producing a Luttinger liquid (LL) which has now been observed in a number of experimental systems. Interactions are even more important at low carrier density, and in the limit when the long-ranged Coulomb potential is the dominant energy scale, the electron liquid is expected to become a periodically ordered solid known as the Wigner crystal. In 1D, the Wigner crystal has been predicted to exhibit novel spin and magne…
Experimental and theoretical studies on ratchet effects in graphene with a lateral superlattice excited by alternating electric fields of terahertz frequency range are presented. A lateral superlatice deposited on top of monolayer graphene is formed either by periodically repeated metal stripes having different widths and spacings or by inter-digitated comb-like dual-grating-gate (DGG) structures. We show that the ratchet photocurrent excited by terahertz radiation and sensitive to the radiation polarization state can be efficiently controlled by the back gate driving the system through the Di…
Periodic driving can create topological phases of matter absent in static systems. In terms of the displacement of the position expectation value of a time-evolving wavepacket in a closed system, a type of adiabatic dynamics in periodically driven systems is studied for general initial states possessing coherence between different Floquet bands. Under one symmetry assumption, the displacement of the wavepacket center over one adiabatic cycle is found to be comprised by two components independent of the time scale of the adiabatic cycle: a weighted integral of the Berry curvature summed over al…
The strain fields of periodically buckled graphene induce a periodic pseudo-magnetic field (PMF) that modifies the electronic band structure. From the geometry, amplitude, and period of the periodic pseudo-magnetic field, we determine the necessary conditions to access the regime of correlated phases by examining the band flattening. As compared to twisted bilayer graphene the proposed system has the advantages that: 1) only a single layer of graphene is needed, 2) one is not limited to hexagonal superlattices, and 3) narrower flat bandwidth and larger separation between flat bands can be indu…
Two-dimensional atomic crystals can radically change their properties in response to external influences such as substrate orientation or strain, resulting in essentially new materials in terms of the electronic structure. A striking example is the creation of flat-bands in bilayer-graphene for certain 'magic' twist-angles between the orientations of the two layers. The quenched kinetic-energy in these flat-bands promotes electron-electron interactions and facilitates the emergence of strongly-correlated phases such as superconductivity and correlated-insulators. However, the exquisite fine-tu…
Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with widths of a few nanometres are promising candidates for future nano-electronic applications due to their structurally tunable bandgaps, ultrahigh carrier mobilities, and exceptional stability. However, the direct growth of micrometre-long GNRs on insulating substrates, which is essential for the fabrication of nano-electronic devices, remains an immense challenge. Here, we report the epitaxial growth of GNRs on an insulating hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrate through nanoparticle-catalysed chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Ultra-narrow GNRs with lengths of…
Aqueous two-phase (ATP) extraction has been demonstrated as a fast, scalable, and effective separation technique to sort single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) according to their diameter and chiral structure. The exact mechanism behind the chirality-dependent migration of SWCNTs between the two phases is however not completely understood, and depends on many parameters (e.g., choice of surfactants and their concentration, pH, temperature, ...), making it difficult to optimize the multivariable parameter space. In this work, we present a systematic study of the choice and concentration of speci…
We study the effect of weak disorder on the delocalization properties of gapped graphene superlattice (SL) formed by periodically located rectangular potential barriers. We consider two types of the SLs: the SLs with uniform and nonuniform gap. Using the perturbative approach we obtain an analytical expression for the inverse localization length (ILL) derived for the case of randomly fluctuating geometric and energetic parameters. In the first case, when the barrier (well) width fluctuates around its mean value, the corresponding equation for the ILL reveals the presence of the Fabry-Perot res…
Quantum systems can show qualitatively new forms of behavior when they are driven by fast time-periodic modulations. In the limit of large driving frequency, the long-time dynamics of such systems can often be described by a time-independent effective Hamiltonian, which is generally identified through a perturbative treatment. Here, we present a general formalism that describes time-modulated physical systems, in which the driving frequency is large, but resonant with respect to energy spacings inherent to the system at rest. Such a situation is currently exploited in optical-lattice setups, w…
Topological optical states exhibit unique immunity to defects and the ability to propagate without losses rendering them ideal for photonic applications.A powerful class of such states is based on time-reversal symmetry breaking of the optical response. However, existing proposals either involve sophisticated and bulky structural designs or can only operate in the microwave regime. Here, we propose and provide a theoretical proof-of-principle demonstration for highly confined topologically protected optical states to be realized at infrared frequencies in a simple 2D material structure-a period…

Motivated by recent proposals on strain-engineering of graphene electronic circuits we calculate conductivity, shot-noise and the density of states in periodically deformed graphene. We provide the solution to the Dirac-Kronig-Penney model, which describes the phase-coherent transport in clean monolayer samples with an one-dimensional modulation of the strain and the electrostatic potentials. We compare the exact results to a qualitative band-structure analysis. We find that periodic strains induce large pseudo-gaps and suppress charge transport in the direction of strain modulation. The strai…
