With the use of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation we have calculated a direct current (d.c) in undoped zigzag carbon nanotube (CN) by mixing two coherent electromagnetic waves with commensurate frequencies i.e and . This effect is attributed to the nonparabolicity of the electron energy band which is very strong in carbon nanotubes. We observed that the current is negative similar to that observed in superlattice. However if the phase shift lies between and there is an inversion and the current becomes positive. It is interesting to note that exhibit negative differential conductivity as expected for d.c through carbon nanotubes. This method can be used to generate terahertz radiation in carbon nanotubes. It can also be used in determining the relaxation time of electrons in carbon nanotubes
Magnetic response of interacting electrons in a zigzag carbon nanotube threaded by a magnetic flux is investigated within a Hartree-Fock mean field approach. Following the description of energy spectra for both non-interacting and interacting cases we analyze the behavior of persistent current in individual branches of a nanotube. Our present investigation leads to a possibility of getting a filling-dependent metal-insulator transition in a zigzag carbon nanotube.
We report the one-electron spectrum and eigenstates of infinite achiral and chiral $(2m,m)$ carbon nanotubes found by using the analytic solution to the Schrödinger equation for the tight-binding Hückel-type Hamiltonian. With the help of matching the wave functions on the interfaces between the regions, where electrons have different site energies, we find and compare the transmission coefficients for zigzag, armchair and chiral nanotubes subjected to the action of an applied step-like potential. The correspondence between the nanotube band structure and the energy dependence of the transmissi…
We investigate transport through a single impurity in metallic zigzag carbon nanotube and find the conductance sensitively depends on the impurity strength and the bias voltage. It is rather interesting that interplay between the current-carrying scattering state and evanescent modes leads to rich phenomena including resonant backward scattering, perfect tunneling and charge accumulations. In addition, we also find a dual relation between the backscattered conductance and the charge accumulation. At the end, relevance to the experiments is discussed.
We investigated spin-resolved electronic transport through a junction composed of a nonmagnetic metal electrode and a zigzag carbon nanotube by means of self-consistent Green's function method in the tight binding approximation and the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. Our results show that the electric current can be spin-polarized if the coupling of the junction is weak. Further calculations on spin-spin correlation and local density of states reveal the existence of magnetic edge states in zigzag carbon nanotubes, which is responsible for the observed spin-polarized current and can b…
Plasmon resonance is expected to occur in metallic and doped semiconducting carbon nanotubes in the terahertz frequency range, but its convincing identification has so far been elusive. The origin of the terahertz conductivity peak commonly observed for carbon nanotube ensembles remains controversial. Here we present results of optical, terahertz, and DC transport measurements on highly enriched metallic and semiconducting nanotube films. A broad and strong terahertz conductivity peak appears in both types of films, whose behaviors are consistent with the plasmon resonance explanation, firmly …
It is reported that terahertz radiation from 0.69 THz to 2.54 THz has been sensitively detected in a device consisting of bundles of metallic carbon nanotubes, quasi-optically coupled through a lithographically fabricated antenna, and a silicon lens. The measured data are consistent with a bolometric process and show promise for operation above 4.2 K.
Interlayer Conductance in the Armchair Nanotube -- Zigzag Graphene Ribbon Parallel Contact: Theoretical Proposal of Detection of Wavefunction Growing from the Edge to the Center in the Graphene Ribbon
Properties of bulk and boundaries of materials can, in general, be quite different, both for topological and non-topological reasons. One of the simplest boundary problems to pose is the tight-binding problem of noninteracting electrons on a finite honeycomb lattice. Despite its simplicity, the problem is quite rich and directly related to the physics of graphene. We revisit this long-studied problem and present an analytical derivation of the electron spectrum and wave functions for graphene rectangular derivatives. We provide an exact analytical description of extended and localized states, …
The thermal radiation from an isolated finite-length carbon nanotube (CNT) is theoretically investigated both in near- and far-field zones. The formation of the discrete spectrum in metallic CNTs in the terahertz range is demonstrated due to the reflection of strongly slowed-down surface-plasmon modes from CNT ends. The effect does not appear in semiconductor CNTs. The concept of CNT as a thermal nanoantenna is proposed.
We investigate theoretically the feasibility of generation and amplification of terahertz radiation in aligned achiral carbon nanotubes (zigzag and armchair) in comparison with a superlattice in the presence of a constant (dc) and high-frequency (ac) electric fields. The electric current density expression is derived using the semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation with a constant relaxation time with the electric field applied along the nanotube axis. Our analysis on the current density versus electric field characteristics demonstrates negative differential conductivity at high frequency…
We characterize the terahertz detection mechanism in antenna-coupled metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes. At low temperature, 4.2 K, a peak in the low-frequency differential resistance is observed at zero bias current due to non-Ohmic contacts. This electrical contact nonlinearity gives rise to the measured terahertz response. By modeling each nanotube contact as a nonlinear resistor in parallel with a capacitor, we determine an upper bound for the value of the contact capacitance that is smaller than previous experimental estimates. The small magnitude of this contact capacitance has favo…
We study one dimensional (1D) carbon ribbons with the armchair edges and the zigzag carbon nanotubes and their counterparts with finite length (0D) in the framework of the Hückel model. We prove that a 1D carbon ribbon is metallic if its width (the number of carbon rings) is equal to $2+3n$. We show that the dispersion law (electron band energy) of a 1D metallic ribbon or a 1D metallic carbon nanotube has a universal {\it sin-}like dependence at the Fermi energy which is independent of its width. We find that in case of metallic graphene ribbons of finite length (rectangular graphene macromole…
In this work we investigated the encapsulation of C$_20$ and C$_30$ fullerenes into semiconducting carbon nanotubes to study the possibility of bandgap engineering in such systems. Classical molecular dynamics simulations coupled to tight-binding calculations were used to determine the conformational and electronic properties of carbon nanotube supercells containing up to 12 fullerenes. We have observed that C$_20$ fullerenes behave similarly to a p-type dopant while C$_30$ ones work as n-type ones. For larger diameter nanotubes, where fullerene patterns start to differ from the linear arrange…
Generation of direct current in zigzag carbon nanotubes due to harmonic mixing of two coherent electromagnetic waves is being considered. The electromagnetic waves have commensurate frequencies of omega and two omega. The rectification of the waves at high frequencies is quite smooth whiles at low frequencies there are some fluctuations. The nonohmicity observed in the I-Vcharacteristics is attributed to the nonparabolicity of the electron energy band which is very strong in carbon nanotubes because of high stark component. It is observed that the current falls off faster at lower electric fie…
In this work, Dirac fermions have been obtained and engineered in one-dimensional (1D) zigzag phosphorus nanotubes (ZPNTs). We have performed a comprehensive first-principle computational study of the electronic properties of ZPNTs with various diameters. The results indicate that as the lattice parameter (Lc) along axial direction increases, ZPNTs undergo transitions from metal to semimetal and semimetal to semiconductor, whereas Dirac fermions appear at Lc ranging from 3.90Å to 4.10Å. In particular, a field effect transistor (FET) based on a 12-ZPNT (with 12 unit cells in transverse directio…
The fundamental question of how chirality affects the electronic coupling of a nanotube to metal contacts is important for the application of nanotubes as nanowires. We show that metallic-zigzag nanotubes are superior to armchair nanotubes as nanowires, by modeling the metal-nanotube interface. More specifically, we show that as a function of coupling strength, the total electron transmission of armchair nanotubes increases and tends to be pinned close to unity for a metal with Fermi wave vector close to that of gold. In contrast, the total transmission of zigzag nanotubes increases to the max…
Generating and detecting radiation in the technologically relevant range of the so-called terahertz gap ($0.1 - 10$ THz) is challenging because of a lack of efficient sources and detectors. Quantum dots in carbon nanotubes have shown great potential to build sensitive terahertz detectors usually based on photon-assisted tunnelling. A recently reported mechanism combining resonant quantum dot transitions and tunnelling barriers asymmetries results in a narrow linewidth photocurrent response with a large signal-to-noise ratio under weak THz radiation. That device was sensitive to one frequency, …
Using first-principles calculations, we study the work function of single wall silicon carbide nanotube (SiCNT). The work function is found to be highly dependent on the tube chirality and diameter. It increases with decreasing the tube diameter. The work function of zigzag SiCNT is always larger than that of armchair SiCNT. We reveal that the difference between the work function of zigzag and armchair SiCNT comes from their different intrinsic electronic structures, for which the singly degenerate energy band above the Fermi level of zigzag SiCNT is specifically responsible. Our finding offer…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate systematically the water permeation properties across the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) in the presence of the terahertz electric field (TEF). With the TEF normal to the nanotube, the fracture of the hydrogen bonds results in the giant peak of net fluxes across the SWCNT with a three-fold enhancement centered around 14THz. The phenomenon is attributed to the resonant mechanisms, characterized by librational, rotational, and rotation-induced responses of in-tube polar water molecules to the TEF. For the TEF along the symmetry axis of …
It has been known theoretically that localized states exist around zigzag edges of a graphite ribbon and of a carbon nanotube, whose energy eigenvalues are located between conduction and valence bands. We found that in metallic single-walled zigzag carbon nanotubes two of the localized states become critical, and that their localization length is sensitive to the mean curvature of a tube and can be controlled by the Aharonov-Bohm flux. The curvature induced mini-gap closes by the relatively weak magnetic field. Conductance measurement in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux can give informat…
Using a tight-binding model and some well-known approaches and methods based on Green's function theory and Landauer formalism, we numerically investigate the conductance properties and I-V characteristics of zigzag single-walled BCN alloy nanotube in the CNT/BCN/CNT structure, where nanocontacts are considered as zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes. Our calculations show that any increasing in considerably give rise to the enhancing of the conductance of the system. With our system characteristics, this system can be a possible candidate for a nanoelectronic switching device.
The phonon dispersion of chiral single wall carbon nanotubes has been obtained from $6\times 6$ dyanimic matrix. The present manuscript is the extension of G. D. Mahan and Gun Sang Jeon's work on armchair and zigzag nanotubes. [see P. R. B., {\bf 70}, 075405 (2004)]. We use spring and mass model with the proper phonon potential suggested by \cite{M2}. We can calculate the dispersion of single wall carbon nanotubes near $Γ$ point with arbitrary chirality. The results are compatible with Mahan et. al's results for armchair and zigzag SWNTs.
Two delocalized states of metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes near the Dirac point can be localized by the Aharanov-Bohm magnetic field around 20 Tesla. The dependence of the localization on the length and diameter of the nanotubes shows that the localization-delocalization transition can be observed for 2 nm diameter tube. The mechanism of the localization is explained in terms of the deformation-induced gauge field, which shows a topological nature of the localization. The transition from the delocalized states to the localized states can be observed by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectro…
The stability of trionic excitations in zigzag carbon nanotubes has been estimated. A trion is shown to be unstable with respect to the ground excitonic state and stable with respect to the excited one. So, trions in nanotubes of this type can be formed by capturing an electron or a hole by an excited exciton. In other words, the trion in a nanotube is an excimer complex, which results in the formation of a system with three energy levels (unexcited exciton--trion--excited exciton).
Using semiclassical Boltzmann equation we have studied theoretically an effect of a direct current (DC) generation in undoped armchair carbon nanotube (CN) by mixing two coherent electromagnetic waves with commensurate frequencies i.e omega and 2 omega . We compared the results of the armchair with that of the zigzag carbon nanotubes for the same conditions (i.e. when the normalized current is plotted against the amplitude). Quantitatively they agree with each other except that the absolute value of the peaks of the current for zigzag is about 1.1 times that of the armchair. We noticed that th…
In this work, we have examined how the multi-vacancy defects induced in the horizontal direction change the energetics and the electronic structure of semiconducting Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs). The electronic structure of SWCNTs is computed for each deformed configuration by means of real space, Order(N) Tight Binding Molecular Dynamic (O(N) TBMD) simulations. Energy band gap is obtained in real space through the behavior of electronic density of states (eDOS) near the Fermi level. Vacancies can effectively change the energetics and hence the electronic structure of SWCNTs. In thi…
We present an analytical description of pi electrons of a finite size bilayer graphene within a framework of the tight-binding model. The bilayered structures considered here are characterized by a rectangular geometry and have a finite size in one or both directions with armchair- and zigzag-shaped edges. We provide an exact analytical description of the spectrum of pi electrons in the zigzag and armchair bilayer graphene nanoribbons and nanotubes. We analyze the dispersion relations, the density of states, and the conductance quantization.
Band structure is theoretically studied in partially flattened carbon nanotubes within an effective-mass scheme. Effects of inter-wall interactions are shown to be important in non-chiral nanotubes such as zigzag and armchair and can essentially be neglected in chiral nanotubes except in the close vicinity of non-chiral tubes. In fact, inter-wall interactions significantly modify states depending on relative displacement in the flattened region in non-chiral tubes and can convert semiconducting tubes into metallic and vice versa. They diminish rapidly when the chiral angle deviates from that o…
We study macroscopically-aligned single-wall carbon nanotube arrays with uniform lengths via polarization-dependent terahertz and infrared transmission spectroscopy. Polarization anisotropy is extreme at frequencies less than $\sim$3 THz with no sign of attenuation when the polarization is perpendicular to the alignment direction. The attenuation for both parallel and perpendicular polarizations increases with increasing frequency, exhibiting a pronounced and broad peak around 10 THz in the parallel case. We model the electromagnetic response of the sample by taking into account both radiative…
The diverse applications of terahertz radiation and its importance to fundamental science makes finding ways to generate, manipulate, and detect terahertz radiation one of the key areas of modern applied physics. One approach is to utilize carbon nanomaterials, in particular, single-wall carbon nanotubes and graphene. Their novel optical and electronic properties offer much promise to the field of terahertz science and technology. This article describes the past, current, and future of the terahertz science and technology of carbon nanotubes and graphene. We will review fundamental studies suc…
We measure the conductivity spectra of thin films comprising bundled single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different average lengths in the frequency range 0.3-1000 THz and temperature interval 10-530 K. The observed temperature-induced changes in the terahertz conductivity spectra are shown to depend strongly on the average CNT length, with a conductivity around 1 THz that increases/decreases as the temperature increases for short/long tubes. This behaviour originates from the temperature dependence of the electron scattering rate, which we obtain from Drude fits of the measured conductivi…
We consider the excitation of electrons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes by photons from the evanescent field created by a subwavelength-diameter optical fiber. The strongly changing evanescent field of such nanofibers requires dropping the dipole approximation. We show that this leads to novel effects, especially a high dependence of the photon absorption on the relative orientation and geometry of the nanotube-nanofiber setup in the optical and near infrared domain. In particular, we calculate photon absorption probabilities for a straight nanotube and nanofiber depending on their relative…
We present an approach for time-dependent quantum transport based on a self-consistent non-equilibrium Green function formalism. The technique is applied to a ballistic carbon nanotube transistor in the presence of a time harmonic signal at the gate. In the ON state the dynamic conductance exhibits plasmonic resonant peaks at terahertz frequencies. These vanish in the OFF state, and the dynamic conductance displays smooth oscillations, a signature of single particle quantum effects. We show that the nanotube kinetic inductance plays an essential role in the high-frequency behavior.
Electromagnetic characteristics of single-walled finite-length carbon nanotubes - absorption cross-section and field enhancement in the near zone - are theoretically studied in a wide frequency range from terahertz to visible. The analysis is based on the impedance-type effective boundary conditions and the integral equation technique. Comparison with experimental results is carried out allowing qualitative physical interpretation of low-frequency (far-IR and terahertz) absorption band observed in experiments. Potentiality of CNTs for the IR photothermolysis of living cells is discussed. Stron…
Using first-principles calculations, we examine the electronic and magnetic properties of partially open zigzag carbon nanotube (CNT) superlattices. It is found that depending on their opening degree, these superlattices can exhibit multiple localized states around the Fermi energy. More importantly, some electronic states confined in some parts of the structure even have special magnetic orderings. We demonstrate that, as a proof of principle, some partially open zigzag CNT superlattices are by themselves giant (100%) magnetoresistive devices. Furthermore, the localized(and spin-polarized) st…
Towards a novel magnetoresistance (MR) device with a carbon nanotube, we propose ``nonmagnetic metal/zigzag nanotube encapsulating magnetic atoms/nonmagnetic metal'' junctions. We theoretically investigate how spin-polarized edges of the nanotube and the encapsulated magnetic atoms influence on transport. When the on-site Coulomb energy divided by the magnitude of transfer integral, $U/|t|$, is larger than 0.8, large MR effect due to the direction of spins of magnetic atoms, which has the magnitude of the MR ratio of about 100%, appears reflecting such spin-polarized edges.
In recent years, there have been conflicting reports regarding the ultrafast photoconductive response of films of single walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which apparently exhibit photoconductivities that can differ even in sign. Here, we observe explicitly that the THz photoconductivity of CNT films is a highly variable quantity which correlates with the length of the CNTs, while the chirality distribution has little influence. Moreover, by comparing the photo-induced change in THz conductivity with heat-induced changes, we show that both occur primarily due to heat-generated modification of th…
We present ab initio calculations on the band structure and density of states of single wall semiconducting carbon nanotubes with high degrees (up to 25%) of B, Si and N substitution. The doping process consists of two phases: different carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for a constant doping rate and different doping rates for the zigzag (8, 0) carbon nanotube. We analyze the doping dependence of nanotubes on the doping rate and the nanotube type. Using these results, we select the zigzag (8, 0) carbon nanotube for toxic gas sensor calculation and obtain the total and partial densities of states for CNT…
The controlled introduction of covalent sp$^{3}$ defects into semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) gives rise to exciton localization and red-shifted near-infrared luminescence. The single-photon emission characteristics of these functionalized SWCNTs make them interesting candidates for electrically driven quantum light sources. However, the impact of sp$^{3}$ defects on the carrier dynamics and charge transport in carbon nanotubes remains an open question. Here, we use ultrafast, time-resolved optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy as a direct and quantitative technique …
We study the origin of interface states in carbon nanotube intramolecular junctions between achiral tubes. By applying the Born-von Karman boundary condition to an interface between armchair- and zigzag-terminated graphene layers, we are able to explain their number and energies. We show that these interface states, costumarily attributed to the presence of topological defects, are actually related to zigzag edge states, as those of graphene zigzag nanoribbons. Spatial localization of interface states is seen to vary greatly, and may extend appreciably into either side of the junction. Our res…
In contrast with carbon nanotubes, the absence of translational symmetry (or periodical boundary condition) in the restricted direction of zigzag graphene nanoribbon removes the selection rule of subband number conservation. However, zigzag graphene nanoribbons with even dimers do have the inversion symmetry. We, therefore, propose a selection rule of parity conservation for electron-phonon interactions. The electron-phonon scattering matrix in zigzag graphene nanoribbons is developed using the tight-binging model within the deformation potential approximation.
The electron-phonon matrix element for edge states of carbon nanotubes and graphene at zigzag edges is calculated for obtaining renormalized energy dispersion of the edge states. Self-energy correction by electron-phonon interaction contributes to the energy dispersion of edge states whose energy bandwidth is similar to phonon energy. Since the energy-uncertainty of the edge state is larger than temperature, we conclude that the single-particle picture of the edge state in not appropriate when the electron-phonon interaction is taken into account. The longitudinal acoustic phonon mode contribu…
For single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a length of 1-50 nm, the surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) resonance is within the terahertz frequency range; therefore, SWCNT lattices can be used to design frequency-selective surface (FSS). The numerical model of electromagnetic wave diffraction on a two-dimensional periodic SWCNT lattice can be described by an integro-differential equation of the second-order with respect to the surface current along SWCNT. The equation can be solved by the Bubnov-Galerkin method. Frequency dependence of reflecting and transmitting electromagnetic waves for FS…
Using large-scale DFT calculations, we have investigated the structural and electronic properties of both armchair and zigzag graphdiyne nanotubes as a function of size. To provide insight in these properties, we present new detailed calculations of the structural relaxation energy, effective electron/hole mass, and size-scaling of the bandgap as a function of size and chirality using accurate screened-exchange DFT calculations. These calculations provide a systematic evaluation of the structural and electronic properties of the largest graphdiyne nanotubes to date - up to 1,296 atoms and 23,3…
One-dimensional nanostructures such as nanowires and nanotubes are stimulating tremendous interest due to their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. In this study, the first principle calculation was performed to investigate on the size effect on the electronic, mechanic and piezoelectric properties of hexagonal-BN nanotube (BNNT). It demonstrates that the nanotube diameter can modulate the direct bandgap significantly of the zigzag-BNNT, increasing from 3.96eV to 4.44eV with the larger diameter from 10 to 16 unit cells in circular direction. Both armchair and zigzag BNNT exhibit la…
We consider the carrier transport and plasmonic phenomena in the lateral carbon nanotube (CNT) networks forming the device channel with asymmetric electrodes. One electrode is the Ohmic contact to the CNT network and the another contact is the Schottky contact. These structures can serve as detectors of the terahertz (THz) radiation. We develop the device model for response of the lateral CNT networks which comprise a mixture of randomly oriented semiconductor CNTs (s-CNTs) and quasi-metal CNTs (m-CNTs). The proposed model includes the concept of the two-dimensional plasmons in relatively dens…
Explicit expressions of the band spectrum near the neutrality point for armchair and zigzag graphene ribbons and carbon nanotubes were derived based on a tight-binding macromolecule model of graphene. The obtained dispersion relations are used to determine and compare the conductance ladders of these structures and are beneficial for many other applications. Our results are different in many respects from previously reported data. This new information forms a solid reliable basis for evaluation of the potential of graphene nanoelectronic devices.
We theoretically study the magnetoresistance of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in the ballistic transport regime, using a standard tight-binding approach. The main attention is directed to spin-polarized electrical transport in the presence of either axial or perpendicular magnetic field. The method takes into account both Zeeman splitting as well as size and chirality effects. These factors (along with a broadening of energy levels due to a strong nanotube/electrode coupling) lead, in ultra small SWCNTs, to serious modifications in profile of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Other notew…
Ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy accesses the {\em dark} excitonic ground state in resonantly-excited (6,5) SWNTs via internal, direct dipole-allowed transitions between lowest lying dark-bright pair state $\sim$6 meV. An analytical model reproduces the response which enables quantitative analysis of transient densities of dark excitons and {\em e-h} plasma, oscillator strength, transition energy renormalization and dynamics. %excitation-induced renormalization. Non-equilibrium, yet stable, quasi-1D quantum states with dark excitonic correlations rapidly emerge even with increasing off-resonan…
For terahertz (THz) wave applications, tunable and rapid modulation is highly required. When studied by means of optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) thin films demonstrated ultrafast carrier recombination lifetimes with a high relative change in the signal under optical excitation, making them promising candidates for high-speed modulators. Here, combination of SWCNTthin films and stretchable substrates facilitated studies of the SWCNT mechanical properties under strain, and enabled the development of a new type of an opto-mechanical modulator. By …
The nonequilibrium Green's function method is used to study the ballistic transport in metallic carbon nanotubes when a current is injected from the electrodes with finite bias voltages. We reveal, both analytically and numerically, that large loop currents circulating around the tube are induced, which come from a quantum mechanical interference and are much larger than the current along the tube axis when the injected electron is resonant with a time-reversed pair of degenerate states, which are, in fact, inherent in the zigzag and chiral nanotubes. This results in large orbital magnetic mom…
We use the energy analysis as a perturbative method to study the effect of electron-radial breathing mode (RBM) phonon interaction on the electrical conductivity of long metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The band structure of zigzag CNTs is calculated by exerting zone-folding method on relations derived by using the nearest neighbor approximation of tight-binding expression for the $π$ valence and conduction bands of graphene. The small hollow cylinder model, with two different approximations, is used to obtain the RBM frequency in our calculation. As the result, we have calculated the …
In this paper we study the effect of absorption peak correlation in finite length carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoribbons. It is shown, in the orthogonal π-orbital tight-binding model with the nearest neighbor approximation, that if the ribbon width is a half of the tube circumference the effect takes place for all achiral ribbons (zigzag, armchair and bearded), and corresponding tubes, starting from lengths of about 30 nm. This correlation should be useful in designing nanoribbon-based optoelectronics devices fully integrated into a single layer of graphene.
We propose an ab-initio combination of the Linear Muffin-Tin Orbital and the Recursion Methods to study the effect of extended Stone-Wales defects in single layer Carbon nanotubes. We have successfully applied this to zigzag and armchair tubes. The methodology involves no intrinsic mean-field like assumptions or external parameter fitting. As defects proliferate, the low density of states near the Fermi levels of the pristine tubes is filled with defect states. The increase of DOS at the Fermi level leads to enhanced conduction, which indicates enhanced metallicity due to SW defects in the nan…
Persistent currents driven by a static magnetic flux parallel to the carbon nanotube axis are investigated. Owing to the hexagonal symmetry of graphene the Fermi contour expected for a 2D-lattice reduces to two points. However the electron or hole doping shifts the Fermi energy upwards or downwards and as a result, the shape of the Fermi surface changes. Such a hole doping leading to the Fermi level shift of (more or less) 1eV has been recently observed experimentally. In this paper we show that the shift of the Fermi energy changes dramatically the persistent currents and discuss the electron…
