We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the periodic (and slightly more generally of the quasi-periodic finite-gap) Toda lattice for decaying initial data in the soliton region. In addition, we show how to reduce the problem in the remaining region to the known case without solitons.
We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Toda lattice for decaying initial data in the soliton region. In addition, we point out how to reduce the problem in the remaining region to the known case without solitons.
We investigate soliton solutions of the Toda hierarchy on a quasi-periodic finite-gap background by means of the double commutation method and the inverse scattering transform. In particular, we compute the phase shift caused by a soliton on a quasi-periodic finite-gap background. Furthermore, we consider short range perturbations via scattering theory. We give a full description of the effect of the double commutation method on the scattering data and establish the inverse scattering transform in this setting.
We find new solutions, including soliton-like ones, for a special case of non-Abelian loop Toda equations associated with complex general linear groups. We use the method of rational dressing based on an appropriate block-matrix representation suggested by the Z-gradation under consideration. We present solutions in a form of a direct matrix generalization of the Hirota's soliton solution already well-known for the case of Abelian loop Toda systems.
We present a class of solutions of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation, its fully discrete analogue and its ultra-discrete limit. These solutions demonstrate the existence of soliton resonance and web-like structure in discrete integrable systems such as differential-difference equations, difference equations and cellular automata (ultra-discrete equations).
We present a systematic and detailed review of the application of the method of Hirota and the rational dressing method to abelian Toda systems associated with the untwisted loop groups of complex general linear groups. Emphasizing the rational dressing method, we compare the soliton solutions constructed within these two approaches, and show that the solutions obtained by the Hirota's method are a subset of those obtained by the rational dressing method.
We consider an integrable conformally invariant two dimensional model associated to the affine Kac-Moody algebra SL(3). It possesses four scalar fields and six Dirac spinors. The theory does not possesses a local Lagrangian since the spinor equations of motion present interaction terms which are bilinear in the spinors. There exists a submodel presenting an equivalence between a U(1) vector current and a topological current, which leads to a confinement of the spinors inside the solitons. We calculate the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions using a procedure which is a hybrid of the dressing…
A new type of multi-soliton solution to the ultradiscrete Toda equation is proposed. The solution can be transformed into another expression of solution in a perturbation form. A direct proof of the solution is also given.
We construct $N$-soliton solution for the non-autonomous discrete-time Toda lattice equation, which is a generalization of the discrete-time Toda equation such that the lattice interval with respect to time is an arbitrary function in time.
A deautonomized version of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation is presented. Its ultra-discrete analogue and soliton solutions are also discussed.
We propose a systematic method for constructing integrable delay-difference and delay-differential analogues of known soliton equations such as the Lotka-Volterra, Toda lattice, and sine-Gordon equations and their multi-soliton solutions. It is carried out by applying a reduction and delay-differential limit to the discrete KP or discrete two-dimensional Toda lattice equations. Each of the delay-difference and delay-differential equations has the N-soliton solution, which depends on the delay parameter and converges to an N-soliton solution of a known soliton equation as the delay parameter ap…
Using the Karpman-Solov''ev quasiparticle approach for soliton-soliton interaction I show that the train propagation of N well separated solitons of the massive Thirring model is described by the complex Toda chain with N nodes. For the optical gap system a generalised (non-integrable) complex Toda chain is derived for description of the train propagation of well separated gap solitons. These results are in favor of the recently proposed conjecture of universality of the complex Toda chain.
We study some static multi-soliton configurations in the su(N + 1) Toda models. Such configurations exist for N > 1. We construct explicitly a multi-soliton solution for any N and study conditions for having such solutions. The number of static solitons is limited by the rank of the su(N + 1) Lie algebra. We give some examples of non-static multi-soliton solutions with static components.
Using Hirota's method, solitons are constructed for affine Toda field theories based on the simply-laced affine algebras. By considering automorphisms of the simply-laced Dynkin diagrams, solutions to the remaining algebras, twisted as well as untwisted, are deduced.
Our previous results on the N-soliton interaction in the adiabatic approximation have been extended. It is shown that the complex Toda chain (CTC) model is an universal one in the sense that it describes the N-soliton train interactions for all NLEE from the NLS hierarchy. We derive the perturbed CTC system and show that the small perturbations affect only the center of mass motion and the global phase of the N-soliton train. A special reduction of CTC known as the Toda chain with indefinite metric describes the interaction of the sine-Gordon solitons and anti-solitons. The peculiarities of th…
The solitons of affine Toda field theory are related to the spin-generalised Ruijsenaars-Schneider (or relativistic Calogero-Moser) models. This provides the sought after extension of the correspondence between the sine-Gordon solitons and the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model.
We give a new integrable boundary condition in affine Toda theory which is soliton-preserving in the sense that a soliton hitting the boundary is reflected as a soliton. All previously known integrable boundary conditions forced a soliton to be converted into an antisoliton upon reflection. We prove integrability of our boundary condition using a generalization of Sklyanin's formalism.
Using the Karpman-Solov'ev method we derive the equations for the 2-soliton adiabatic interaction for solitons of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation (MNSE). Then we generalize these equations to the case of N interacting solitons with almost equal velocities and widths. On the basis of this result we prove that the N MNSE-soliton train interaction (N>2) can be modeled by the completely integrable complex Toda chain (CTC). This is an argument in favor of universality of the complex Toda chain which was previously shown to model the soliton train interaction for nonlinear Schrodinger so…
We study the relation between the group-algebraic approach and the dressing symmetry one to the soliton solutions of the $A_n^{(1)}$ Toda field theory in 1+1 dimensions. Originally solitons in the affine Toda models has been found by Olive, Turok and Underwood. Single solitons are created by exponentials of elements which ad-diagonalize the principal Heisenberg subalgebra. Alternatively Babelon and Bernard exploited the dressing symmetry to reproduce the known expressions for the fundamental tau functions in the sine-Gordon model. In this paper we show the equivalence between these two methods…
Integrable delay analogues of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation are presented and their muti-soliton solutions are constructed by applying the delay reduction to the Gram determinant solution.
A class of rational solutions of Toda lattice satisfying certain Backlund transformations and a class of mixed rational-soliton solutions (quasisolitons) in wronskian formare obtained using the method of Ablowitz and Satsuma. Also an extended class of rational solutions are found using an appropriate recursion relation. They are also solutions of Boussinesq equation and it is conjectured that there is a larger class of common solutions of both equations.
In this paper we compute the Birkhoff normal form of the periodic Toda lattice up to order four. As an application, we verify that Kolmogorov's nondegeneracy condition in the KAM theorem holds almost everywhere in phase space.
We provide a rigorous treatment of the inverse scattering transform for the entire Toda hierarchy in the case of a quasi-periodic finite-gap background solution.
The tropical (ultradiscrete) periodic Toda lattice is a dynamical system derived from a time-discretized version of the periodic Toda lattice through a limiting procedure called tropicalization. We propose a new formulation for this dynamical system with a representation by two-colored strips. Based on this formulation, a family of its commuting time evolutions is constructed.
Affine Toda equations based on simple Lie algebras arise by imposing zero curvature condition on a Lax connection which belongs to the corresponding loop Lie algebra in the principal gradation. In the particular case of $A_n^{(1)}$ Toda models, we exploit the symmetry of the underlying linear problem to calculate the dressing group element which generates arbitrary $N$-soliton solution from the vacuum. Starting from this result we recover the vertex operator representation of the soliton tau functions.
Soliton time-delays and the semiclassical limit for soliton S-matrices are calculated for non-simply laced Affine Toda Field Theories. The phase shift is written as a sum over bilinears on the soliton conserved charges. The results apply to any two solitons of any Affine Toda Field Theory. As a by-product, a general expression for the number of bound states and the values of the coupling in which the S-matrix can be diagonal are obtained. In order to arrive at these results, a vertex operator is constructed, in the principal gradation, for non-simply laced affine Lie algebras, extending the pr…
An explicit formula concerning curve intersections equivalent to the time evolution of the periodic discrete Toda lattice is presented. First, the time evolution is realized as a point addition on a hyperelliptic curve, which is the spectral curve of the periodic discrete Toda lattice, then the point addition is translated into curve intersections. Next, it is shown that the curves which appear in the curve intersections are explicitly given by using the conserved quantities of the periodic discrete Toda lattice. Finally, the formulation is lifted to the framework of tropical geometry, and a t…
We continue the study of the B-Toda hierarchy (the Toda lattice with the constraint of type B) which can be regarded as a discretization of the BKP hierarchy. We introduce the tau-function of the B-Toda hierarchy and obtain the bilinear equations for it. Examples of soliton tau-functions are presented in the explicit form.
We consider deformations of the $SU(3)$ Affine Toda theory (AT) and investigate the integrability properties of the deformed theories. We find that for some special deformations all conserved quantities change to being conserved only asymptotically, {\it i.e.} in the process of the scattering of two solitons these charges do vary in time, but they return, after the scattering, to the values they had prior to the scattering. This phenomenon, which we have called quasi-integrability, is related to special properties of the two-soliton solutions under space-time parity transformations. Some prope…
Symmetries of the periodic Toda lattice are expresssed in action-angle coordinates and characterized in terms of the periodic and Dirichlet spectrum of the associated Jacobi matrices. Using these symmetries, the phase space of the lattice with Dirichlet boundary conditions is embedded into the phase space of a higher-dimensional periodic lattice. As an application, we obtain a Birkhoff normal form and a KAM theorem for the lattice with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We describe the interaction pattern in the $x$-$y$ plane for a family of soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, $(-4u_{t}+u_{xxx}+6uu_x)_{x}+3u_{yy}=0$. Those solutions also satisfy the finite Toda lattice hierarchy. We determine completely their asymptotic patterns for $y\to \pm\infty$, and we show that all the solutions (except the one-soliton solution) are of {\it resonant} type, consisting of arbitrary numbers of line solitons in both aymptotics; that is, arbitrary $N_-$ incoming solitons for $y\to -\infty$ interact to form arbitrary $N_+$ outgoing solitons for $y\t…
The purpose of this article is to give a streamlined and self-contained treatment of the long-time asymptotics of the Toda lattice for decaying initial data in the soliton and in the similarity region via the method of nonlinear steepest descent.
We consider a nonlinear model that is a combination of the anisotropic two-dimensional classical Heisenberg and Toda-like lattices. In the framework of the Hirota direct approach, we present the field equations of this model as a bilinear system, which is closely related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy, and derive its N-soliton solutions.
Transparent scalar and pseudoscalar potentials in the one-dimensional Dirac equation play an important role as self-consistent mean fields in 1+1 dimensional four-fermion theories (Gross-Neveu, Nambu-Jona Lasinio models) and quasi-one dimensional superconductors (Bogoliubov-De Gennes equation). Here, we show that they also serve as seed to generate a large class of classical multi-soliton and multi-breather solutions of su(N) affine Toda field theories, including the Lax representation and the corresponding vector. This generalizes previous findings about the relationship between real kinks in…
We consider certain degenerations of trigonal curves and hyperelliptic curves, which we call one step degeneration. We compute the limits of corresponding quasi-periodic solutions using the Sato Grassmannian. The mixing of solitons and quasi-periodic solutions is clearly visible in the obtained solutions.
The Toda lattice hierarchy with self-consistent sources and their Lax representation are derived. We construct a forward Darboux transformation (FDT) with arbitrary functions of time and a generalized forward Darboux transformation (GFDT) for Toda lattice with self-consistent sources (TLSCS), which can serve as a non-auto-Backlund transformation between TLSCS with different degrees of sources. With the help of such DT, we can construct many type of solutions to TLSCS, such as rational solution, solitons, positons, negetons, and soliton-positons, soliton-negatons, positon-negatons etc., and stu…
We restrict affine Toda field theory to the half-line by imposing certain boundary conditions at $x=0$. The resulting theory possesses the same spectrum of solitons and breathers as affine Toda theory on the whole line. The classical solutions describing the reflection of these particles off the boundary are obtained from those on the whole line by a kind of method of mirror images. Depending on the boundary condition chosen, the mirror must be placed either at, in front, or behind the boundary. We observe that incoming solitons are converted into outgoing antisolitons during reflection. Neuma…
We construct soliton solutions for non-abelian loop Toda equations associated with general linear groups. Here we consider the untwisted case only and use the rational dressing method based upon appropriate block-matrix representation suggested by the initial $\bbZ$-gradation.
M. Toda in 1967 (\textit{J. Phys. Soc. Japan}, \textbf{22} and \textbf{23}) considered a lattice model with exponential interaction and proved, as suggested by the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam experiments in the 1950s, that it has exact periodic and soliton solutions. The Toda lattice, as it came to be known, was then extensively studied as one of the completely integrable (differential-difference) non-linear equations which admit exact solutions in terms of theta functions of hyperelliptic curves. In this paper, we extend Toda's original approach to give hyperelliptic solutions of the Toda lattice in ter…
The so-called conformal affine Toda theory coupled to the matter fields (CATM), associated to the $\hat{sl}(2)$ affine Lie algebra, is studied. The conformal symmetry is fixed by setting a connection to zero, then one defines an off-critical model, the affine Toda model coupled to the matter (ATM). The quantum version of this reduction process is discussed by means of the perturbative Lagrangian viewpoint, showing that the ATM theory is a spontaneously broken and reduced version of the CATM model. We show, using bosonization techniques that the off-critical theory decouples into a sine-Gordon …
Some properties of the non-commutative versions of the sine-Gordon model (NCSG) and the corresponding massive Thirring theories (NCMT) are studied. Our method relies on the NC extension of integrable models and the master Lagrangian approach to deal with dual theories. The master Lagrangians turn out to be the NC versions of the so-called affine Toda model coupled to matter fields (NCATM) associated to the group GL(2), in which the Toda field belongs to certain representations of either $U(1){x} U(1)$ or $U(1)_{C}$ corresponding to the Lechtenfeld et al. (NCSG$_{1}$) or Grisaru-Penati (NCSG$_{…
A two-dimensional field theory of a fermion chirally coupled to Toda field plus a scalar self-coupling potential is considered. Using techniques of integrable systems we obtain analytical zero modes, in-gap states and bound states in the continuum (BIC) for topological configurations of the scalar field. Fermion-soliton duality mappings are uncovered for the bound state spectrum, which interpolates the weak and strong coupling sectors of the model and give rise to novel Thirring-like and multi-frequency sine-Gordon models, respectively. The non-perturbative effects of the back-reaction of the …
In 1967, Japanese physicist Morikazu Toda published the seminal papers exhibiting soliton solutions to a chain of particles with nonlinear interactions between nearest neighbors. In the decades that followed, Toda's system of particles has been generalized in different directions, each with its own analytic, geometric, and topological characteristics that sets it apart from the others. These are known collectively as the Toda lattice. This survey describes and compares several versions of the finite non-periodic Toda lattice from the perspective of their geometry and topology.
We propose new type of discrete and ultradiscrete soliton equations, which admit extended soliton solution called periodic phase soliton solution. The discrete equation is derived from the discrete DKP equation and the ultradiscrete one is obtained by applying the ultradiscrete limit. The soliton solutions have internal freedom and change their shape periodically during propagation. In particular, the ultradiscrete solution reduces into the solution to the ultradiscrete hungry Lotka-Volterra equation in a special case.
In this short review we compare different ways to construct solutions of the periodic Toda lattice. We give two recipes that follow from the projection method and compare them with the algebra-geometric construction of Krichever.
This paper aims to find new explicit solutions including multi-soliton, multi-positon, multi-negaton, and multi-periodic for a coupled Volterra lattice system which is an integrable discrete version of the coupled KdV equation. The dynamical properties of these new solutions are discussed in detail.
In this paper, we employ the bifurcation method of dynamical systems to investigate the exact travelling wave solutions for the Fornberg-Whitham equation. The implicit expression for solitons is given. The explicit expressions for peakons and periodic cusp wave solutions are also obtained. Further, we show that the limits of soliton solutions and periodic cusp wave solutions are peakons.
In this paper, two types of traveling wave solutions to the osmosis K(2, 2) equation are investigated. They are characterized by two parameters. The expresssions for the soliton and periodic wave solutions are obtained.
In the paper we develop the dressing method for the solution of the two-dimensional periodic Volterra system with a period N. We derive soliton solutions of arbitrary rank $k$ and give a full classification of rank 1 solutions. We have found a new class of exact solutions corresponding to wave fronts which represent smooth interfaces between two nonlinear periodic waves or a periodic wave and a trivial (zero) solution. The wave fronts are non-stationary and they propagate with a constant average velocity. The system also has soliton solutions similar to breathers, which resembles soliton webs …
We employ the bifurcation theory of planar dynamical systems to investigate the exact travelling wave solutions of a generalized Degasperis-Procesi equation. The implicit expression of smooth soliton solutions is given. The explicit expressions of peaked soliton solutions and periodic cuspon solutions are also obtained. Further, we show the relationship among the smooth soliton solutions, the peaked soliton solutions, and the periodic cuspon solutions. The physical relevance of the found solutions and the reasonwhy these solutions can exist in this equation are also given.
We prove separation of variables for the most general (Dn type) periodic Toda lattice with 2x2 Lax matrix. It is achieved by finding proper normalisation for the corresponding Baker-Akhiezer function. Separation of variables for all other periodic Toda lattices associated with infinite series of root systems follows by taking appropriate limits.
We analyze the dynamical behavior of the N-soliton train in the adiabatic approximation of the perturbed nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and the Manakov model. The perturbations include the simultaneous by a periodic external potential, and linear and nonlinear gain/loss terms. We derive the corresponding perturbed complex Toda chain (PCTC) models for both NLS and Manakov model. We show that the soliton interactions dynamics for the PCTC models compares favorably to full numerical results of the original perturbed NLS and Manakov model.
The bright soliton solutions of the mixed 2-coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (CNLS) equations with linear self and cross coupling terms have been obtained by identifying a transformation that transforms the corresponding equation to the integrable mixed 2-CNLS equations. The study on the collision dynamics of bright solitons shows that there exists periodic energy switching, due to the coupling terms. This periodic energy switching can be controlled by the new type of shape changing collisions of bright solitons arising in mixed 2-CNLS system, characterized by intensity redistribution, amplitud…
