In this paper we introduce the concept of purely infinite rings, which in the simple case agrees with the already existing notion of pure infiniteness. We establish various permanence properties of this notion, with respect to passage to matrix rings, corners, and behaviour under extensions, so being purely infinite is preserved under Morita equivalence. We show that a wealth of examples falls into this class, including important analogues of constructions commonly found in operator algebras. In particular, for any (s-)unital $K$-algebra having enough nonzero idempotents (for example, for a von Neumann regular algebra) its tensor product over $K$ with many nonsimple Leavitt path algebras is purely infinite.
In this note, we study the notion of purely infinite simple ring in the case of non-unital rings, and we obtain an analog to Zhang's Dichotomy for $σ$-unital purely infinite simple C*-algebras in the purely algebraic context.
We extend the notion of a purely infinite simple C*-algebra to the context of unital rings, and we study its basic properties, specially those related to K-Theory. For instance, if $R$ is a purely infinite simple ring, then $K_0(R)^+= K_0(R)$, the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective $R$-modules is isomorphic to the monoid obtained from $K_0(R)$ by adjoining a new zero element, and $K_1(R)$ is the abelianization of the group of units of $R$. We develop techniques of construction, obtaining new examples in this class in the case of von Neumann regular rings, and we com…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions on a row-finite graph E so that the Leavitt path algebra L(E) is purely infinite simple. This result provides the algebraic analog to the corresponding result for the Cuntz-Krieger C$^*$-algebra C$^*$(E) given in [7].
In this article, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(\mathcal{G})$ of an ultragraph $\mathcal{G}$ over a field $K$ is purely infinite simple and that it is von Neumann regular. Consequently, we obtain that every graded simple ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is either a locally matricial algebra, or a full matrix ring over $K[x, x^{-1}]$, or a purely infinite simple algebra.
In this work we introduce a new concept, namely, $τ_{s}$-extending modules (rings) which is torsion-theoretic analogues of extending modules and then we extend many results from extending modules to this new concept. For instance we show that for any ring $R$ with unit, if $R$ is purely $τ_{s}$-extending then every cyclic $τ$-nonsingular $R$-module is flat and we show that this fact is true over a principal ideal domain as well. Also, we make a classification for the direct sums of the rings to be purely $τ_{s}$-extending.
Let $R$ denote the purely infinite simple unital Leavitt path algebra $L(E)$. We completely determine the pairs of positive integers $(c,d)$ for which there is an isomorphism of matrix rings $M_c(R)\cong M_d(R)$, in terms of the order of $[1_R]$ in the Grothendieck group $K_0(R)$.
In this paper, we characterize properly purely infinite Steinberg algebras $A_K(\mathcal{G})$ for strongly effective, ample Hausdorff groupoids $\mathcal{G}$. As an application, when $Λ$ is a strongly aperiodic $k$-graph, we show that the notions of pure infiniteness and proper pure infiniteness are equivalent for the Kumjian-Pask algebra $\text{KP}_K(Λ)$, which may be determined by the proper infiniteness of vertex idempotents. In particular, for unital cases, we give simple graph-theoretic criteria for the (proper) pure infiniteness of $\text{KP}_K(Λ)$. Furthermore, since the complex Steinbe…
Given any finitely aligned higher-rank graph $Λ$ and any unital commutative ring $R$, the Kumjian-Pask algebra $\mathrm{KP}_R(Λ)$ is known as the higher-rank generalization of Leavitt path algebras. After characterizing simple Kumjian-Pask algebras by L.O. Clark and Y.E.P. Pangalela (and others), we focus in this article on the purely infinite simple ones. Briefly, we show that if $\mathrm{KP}_R(Λ)$ is simple and every vertex of $Λ$ is reached from a generalized cycle with an entrance, then $\mathrm{KP}_R(Λ)$ is purely infinite. We next prove a standard dichotomy for simple Kumjian-Pask algebr…
We study just infinite algebras which remain so upon extension of scalars by arbitrary field extensions. Such rings are called stably just infinite. We show that just infinite rings over algebraically closed fields are stably just infinite provided that the ring is either right noetherian or countably generated over a large field. We give examples to show that, over countable fields, a just infinite algebra which is either affine or non-noetherian need not remain just infinite under extension of scalars. We also give a concrete classification of PI stably just infinite rings and give two chara…

A simple Steinberg algebra associated to an ample Hausdorff groupoid $G$ is algebraically purely infinite if and only if the characteristic functions of compact open subsets of the unit space are infinite idempotents. If a simple Steinberg algebra is algebraically purely infinite, then the reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(G)$ is simple and purely infinite. But the Steinberg algebra seems to small for the converse to hold. For this purpose we introduce an intermediate $*$-algebra $B(G)$ constructed using corners $1_U C^*_r(G) 1_U$ for all compact open subsets $U$ of the unit space of the g…
Let $D$ be a division ring infinite-dimensional over its center $k$ with multiplicative group $D^{\times}$. We show that if $D$ belongs to certain families, there exist free symmetric and unitary pairs in $D^{\times}$ with respect to a $k$-involution on $D$.
We identify largest ideals in Leavitt path algebras: the largest locally left/right artinian (which is the largest semisimple one), the largest locally left/right noetherian without minimal idempotents, the largest exchange, and the largest purely infinite. This last ideal is described as a direct sum of purely infinite simple pieces plus purely infinite non-simple and non-decomposable pieces. The invariance under ring isomorphisms of these ideals is also studied.
Let R be a ring, M a left R-module, I an infinite set, N either the direct sum or product of |I| copies of M, and E the endomorphism ring of N as a left R-module. In this note it is shown that E is not the union of a chain of |I| or fewer proper subrings, and also that given a generating set U for E as a ring, there exists a positive integer n such that every element of E is represented by a ring word of length at most n in elements of U.
We define and study two generalizations of the Krull dimension for rings, which can assume cardinal number values of arbitrary size. The first, which we call the "cardinal Krull dimension," is the supremum of the cardinalities of chains of prime ideals in the ring. The second, which we call the "strong cardinal Krull dimension," is a slight strengthening of the first. Our main objective is to address the following question: for which cardinal pairs (K,L) does there exist a ring of cardinality K and (strong) cardinal Krull dimension L? Relying on results from the literature, we answer this ques…
In this paper we discuss several constructions that lead to new examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings. A characterization of the idempotents in the algebra defined by a 2-cocycle is given and used to prove some of the algebra's properties (the infinitesimal deformation case). From infinitesimal deformations we go to full deformations and prove that any formal deformation of a clean (exchange) ring is itself clean (exchange). Examples of nil-clean, clean, and exchange rings arising from poset algebras are also discussed.
We associate reduced and full C*-algebras to arbitrary rings and study the inner structure of these ring C*-algebras. As a result, we obtain conditions for them to be purely infinite and simple. We also discuss several examples. Originially, our motivation comes from algebraic number theory.
We describe relations between maximal subfields in a division ring and in its rational extensions. More precisely, we prove that properties such as being Galois or purely inseparable over the centre generically carry over from one to another. We provide an application to enveloping skewfields in positive characteristics. Namely, there always exist two maximal subfields of the enveloping skewfield of a solvable Lie algebra, such that one is Galois and the second purely inseparable of exponent 1 over the centre. This extends results of Schue in the restricted case. Along the way we provide a des…
Replacing invertibility with quasi-invertibility in Bass' first stable range condition we discover a new class of rings, the QB-rings. These constitute a considerable enlargement of the class of rings with stable rank one (B-rings), and include examples like the ring of endomorphisms of a vector space over a field F, and the ring of all row- and column- finite matrices over F. We show that the category of QB-rings is stable under the formation of corners, ideals and quotients, as well as matrices and direct limits. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for an extension of QB-rings t…
A cover of an associative (not necessarily commutative nor unital) ring $R$ is a collection of proper subrings of $R$ whose set-theoretic union equals $R$. If such a cover exists, then the covering number $σ(R)$ of $R$ is the cardinality of a minimal cover, and a ring $R$ is called $σ$-elementary if $σ(R) < σ(R/I)$ for every nonzero two-sided ideal $I$ of $R$. In this paper, we provide the first examples of $σ$-elementary rings $R$ that have nontrivial Jacobson radical $J$ with $R/J$ noncommutative, and we determine the covering numbers of these rings.
We develop the basic theory of geometrically closed rings as a generalisation of algebraically closed fields, on the grounds of notions coming from positive model theory and affine algebraic geometry. For this purpose we consider several connections between finitely presented rings and ultraproducts, affine varieties and definable sets, and we introduce the key notion of an arithmetic theory as a purely algebraic version of coherent logic for rings.
Finite Frobenius rings have been characterized as precisely those finite rings satisfying the MacWilliams extension property, by work of Wood. In the present note we offer a generalization of this remarkable result to the realm of Artinian rings. Namely, we prove that a left Artinian ring has the left MacWilliams property if and only if it is left pseudo-injective and its finitary left socle embeds into the semisimple quotient. Providing a topological perspective on the MacWilliams property, we also show that the finitary left socle of a left Artinian ring embeds into the semisimple quotient i…
We study properties of a group, abelian group, ring, or monoid $B$ which (a) guarantee that every homomorphism from an infinite direct product $\prod_I A_i$ of objects of the same sort onto $B$ factors through the direct product of finitely many ultraproducts of the $A_i$ (possibly after composition with the natural map $B\to B/Z(B)$ or some variant), and/or (b) guarantee that when a map does so factor (and the index set has reasonable cardinality), the ultrafilters involved must be principal. A number of open questions, and topics for further investigation, are noted.
