We extend the notion of a purely infinite simple C*-algebra to the context of unital rings, and we study its basic properties, specially those related to K-Theory. For instance, if $R$ is a purely infinite simple ring, then $K_0(R)^+= K_0(R)$, the monoid of isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective $R$-modules is isomorphic to the monoid obtained from $K_0(R)$ by adjoining a new zero element, and $K_1(R)$ is the abelianization of the group of units of $R$. We develop techniques of construction, obtaining new examples in this class in the case of von Neumann regular rings, and we compute the Grothendieck groups of these examples. In particular, we prove that every countable abelian group is isomorphic to $K_0$ of some purely infinite simple regular ring. Finally, some known examples are analyzed within this framework.
In this note, we study the notion of purely infinite simple ring in the case of non-unital rings, and we obtain an analog to Zhang's Dichotomy for $σ$-unital purely infinite simple C*-algebras in the purely algebraic context.
In this paper we introduce the concept of purely infinite rings, which in the simple case agrees with the already existing notion of pure infiniteness. We establish various permanence properties of this notion, with respect to passage to matrix rings, corners, and behaviour under extensions, so being purely infinite is preserved under Morita equivalence. We show that a wealth of examples falls into this class, including important analogues of constructions commonly found in operator algebras. In particular, for any (s-)unital $K$-algebra having enough nonzero idempotents (for example, for a vo…
In this work we introduce a new concept, namely, $τ_{s}$-extending modules (rings) which is torsion-theoretic analogues of extending modules and then we extend many results from extending modules to this new concept. For instance we show that for any ring $R$ with unit, if $R$ is purely $τ_{s}$-extending then every cyclic $τ$-nonsingular $R$-module is flat and we show that this fact is true over a principal ideal domain as well. Also, we make a classification for the direct sums of the rings to be purely $τ_{s}$-extending.
We introduce and investigate the so-called D-regularly nil clean rings by showing that these rings are, in fact, a non-trivial generalization of the classical von Neumann regular rings and of the strongly $π$-regular rings. Some other close relationships with certain well-known classes of rings such as $π$-regular rings, exchange rings, clean rings, nil-clean rings, etc., are also demonstrated. These results somewhat supply a recent publication of the author in Turk. J. Math. (2019) as well as they somewhat expand the important role of the two examples of nil-clean rings obtained by Ster in Li…
For any ring \(R\), some characterizations are obtained for unit regular elements in a corner ring \(eRe\) in terms of unit regular elements in \(R\). \noindent {\bf Key Words}: von Neumann regular rings, unit regular rings, corner rings, idempotents \noindent {\bf AMS Classification}: 16A30
We define morphic near-ring elements and study their behavior in regular near-rings. We show that the class of left morphic regular near-rings is properly contained between the classes of left strongly regular and unit regular near-rings.
Separative von Neumann regular rings exist in abundance. For example, all regular self-injective rings, unit regular rings, regular rings with a polynomial identity are separative. It remains open whether there exists a non-separative regular ring. In this note, we study a variety of conditions under which a von Neumann regular ring is separative. We show that a von Neumann regular ring $R$ is separative under anyone of the following cases: {\it (1)} $R$ is CS; {\it (2)} $R$ is pseudo injective (auto-injective); {\it (3)} $R$ satisfies the closure extension property: the essential closures in …
We use the concept of a regular object with respect to another object in an arbitrary category, defined in \cite{dntd}, in order to obtain the transfer of regularity in the sense of Zelmanowitz between the categories $R-$mod and $S-$mod, when $S$ is an excellent extension of the ring $R$. Consequently, we obtain a result of \cite{ps}: if $S$ is an excellent extension of the ring $R$, then $S$ is von Neumann regular ring if and only if $R$ is also von Neumann regular ring. In the second part, using relative regular modules, we give a new proof of a classical result: the von Neumann regular prop…
In this paper we establish a very close link (in terms of von Neumann's coordinatization) between regular modules introduced by Zelmanowitz, on one hand, and von Neumann regular rings, on the other hand: we prove that the lattice $\mathcal{L}^{fg}(M)$ of all finitely generated submodules of a finitely generated regular module $M$, over an arbitrary ring, can be coordinatized as the lattice of all principal right ideals of some von Neumann regular ring $S$.
Let $R$ denote the purely infinite simple unital Leavitt path algebra $L(E)$. We completely determine the pairs of positive integers $(c,d)$ for which there is an isomorphism of matrix rings $M_c(R)\cong M_d(R)$, in terms of the order of $[1_R]$ in the Grothendieck group $K_0(R)$.
Let $R$ be a ring, $\CC_R$ and $\pCCR$ be the set of regular and left regular elements of $R$ ($\CC_R\subseteq \pCCR$). Goldie's Theorem is a semisimplicity criterion for the classical left quotient ring $Q_{l,cl}(R):=\CC_R^{-1}R$. Semisimplicity criteria are given for the classical left regular left quotient ring $'Q_{l,cl}(R):=\pCCR^{-1}R$. As a corollary, two new semisimplicity criteria for $Q_{l,cl}(R)$ are obtained (in the spirit of Goldie).
In this article, we give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the Leavitt path algebra $L_K(\mathcal{G})$ of an ultragraph $\mathcal{G}$ over a field $K$ is purely infinite simple and that it is von Neumann regular. Consequently, we obtain that every graded simple ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is either a locally matricial algebra, or a full matrix ring over $K[x, x^{-1}]$, or a purely infinite simple algebra.
If $R$ is a regular and semiartinian ring, it is proved that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $R$ is unit-regular, (2) every factor ring of $R$ is directly finite, (3) the abelian group $K_0(R)$ is free and admits a basis which is in a canonical one to one correspondence with a set of representatives of simple right $R$-modules. For the class of semiartinian and unit-regular rings the canonical partial order of $K_0(R)$ is investigated and the directed abelian groups which are realizable as $K_0(R)$ of these rings are classified.
We show that a subdirectly irreducible *-regular ring admits a representation within some inner product space provided so does its ortholattice of projections.
We provide a characterization of graded von Neumann regular rings involving the recently introduced class of nearly epsilon-strongly graded rings. As our main application, we generalize Hazrat's result that Leavitt path algebras over fields are graded von Neumann regular. More precisely, we show that a Leavitt path algebra $L_R(E)$ with coefficients in a unital ring $R$ is graded von Neumann regular if and only if $R$ is von Neumann regular. We also prove that both Leavitt path algebras and corner skew Laurent polynomial rings over von Neumann regular rings are semiprimitive and semiprime. The…
We introduce the class weakly nil clean rings, as rings R in which for every a\in R there exist an idempotent e and a nilpotent q such that a-e-q\in eRa. Every weakly nil clean ring is exchange. Weakly nil clean rings contain pi-regular rings as a proper subclass, and these two classes coincide in the case of central idempotents. Every weakly nil clean ring of bounded index and every weakly nil clean PI-ring is strongly pi-regular. The center of a weakly nil clean ring is strongly pi-regular, and consequently, every weakly nil clean ring is a corner of a clean ring. These results extend Azumay…
The set of idempotents of a regular semigroup is given an abstract characterization as a regular biordered set in [2], and in [4] it is shown how a biordered set can be associated with a complemented modular lattice. Von Neumann has shown earlier that any complemented modular lattice of order greater than 3 can be realized as the lattice of principal right ideals of a regular ring (see [3]). Here we try to connect these ideas to get a characterization of the biordered sets of a class of regular rings.
This paper aims at the following results: \begin{enumerate} \item The class of all $*$-regular rings forms a variety. \item A subdirectly irreducible $*$-regular ring $R$ is faithfully representable (i.e. isomorphic to a subring of an endomorphisms ring of vector spaces, where the involution is given by adjunction with respect to a scalar product on the vector space) if so is its ortholattice of projections. \end{enumerate} This is a short version of the second author's PhD thesis.
Given a group G acting on a ring R, one can construct the skew group ring R*G. Skew group rings have been studied in depth, but necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity of a general skew group ring are not known. In this paper, such conditions are given for certain types of skew group rings, with an emphasis on Von Neumann regular skew group rings. Next the results of the first section are used to construct a class of simple skew group rings. In particular, we obtain more efficient proofs of the simplicity of certain rings constructed by H. Kambara and J. Trlifaj.
In sharp contrast to the Abrams-Rangaswamy Theorem that the only von Neumann regular Leavitt path algebras are exactly those associated to acyclic graphs, here we prove that the Leavitt path algebra of any arbitrary graph is a graded von Neumann regular ring. Several properties of Leavitt path algebras, such as triviality of the Jacobson radical, flatness of graded modules and finitely generated graded right (left) ideals being generated by an idempotent element, follow as a consequence of general theory of grade von Neumann regular rings.
We construct an example of a unit-regular ring which is not strongly clean, answering an open question of Nicholson. We also characterize clean matrices with a zero column, and this allows us to describe an interesting connection between unit-regular elements and clean elements. It is also proven that given an element $a$ in a ring $R$, if $a,a^2,\ldots, a^k$ are all regular elements in $R$ (for some $k\geq 1$), then there exists $w\in R$ such that $a^{i}w^{i}a^{i}=a^{i}$ for $1\leq i\leq k$, and a similar statement holds for unit-regular elements. The paper ends with a large number of example…
A ring $R$ is called a J-regular ring if R/J(R) is von Neumann regular, where J(R) is the Jacobson radical of R. It is proved that if R is J-regular, then (i) R is right n-injective if and only if every homomorphism from an $n$-generated small right ideal of $R$ to $R_{R}$ can be extended to one from $R_{R}$ to $R_{R}$; (ii) R is right FP-injective if and only if R is right (J, R)-FP-injective. Some known results are improved.
One of the many equivalent formulation of the Köthe's conjecture is the assertion that there exists no ring which contains two nil right ideals whose sum is not nil. We discuss several consequences of an observation that if the Koethe conjecture fails then there exists a counterexample in the form of a countable local subring of a suitable self-injective prime (von Neumann) regular ring.
We survey recent progress on the realization problem for von Neumann regular rings, which asks whether every countable conical refinement monoid can be realized as the monoid of isoclasses of finitely generated projective right $R$-modules over a von Neumann regular ring $R$.
In this paper, we develop structure theory for graded regular graded self-injective rings and apply it in the context of Leavitt path algebras. We show that for a finite graph, graded regular graded self-injective Leavitt path algebras are of graded type I and these are precisely graded $Σ$-$V$ Leavitt path algebras.
We prove that an integral Jacobson radical ring is always nil, which extends a well known result from algebras over fields to rings. As a consequence we show that if every element x of a ring R is a zero of some polynomial p_x with integer coefficients, such that p_x(1)=1, then R is a nil ring. With these results we are able to give new characterizations of the upper nilradical of a ring and a new class of rings that satisfy the Köthe conjecture, namely the integral rings.
We use George Bergman's recent normal form for universally adjoining an inner inverse to show that, for general rings, a nilpotent regular element $x$ need not be unit-regular. This contrasts sharply with the situation for nilpotent regular elements in exchange rings (a large class of rings), and for general rings when all powers of the nilpotent element $x$ are regular.
Let $S$ be a partial groupoid, that is, a set with a partial binary operation. An $S$-graded ring $R$ is said to be graded von Neumann regular if $x\in xRx$ for every homogeneous element $x\in R.$ Under the assumption that $S$ is cancellative, we characterize $S$-graded rings which are graded von Neumann regular. If a ring is $S$-graded von Neumann regular, and if $S$ is cancellative, then $S$ is such that for every $s\in S,$ there exist $s^{-1}\in S$ and idempotent elements $e,$ $f\in S$ for which $es=sf=s,$ $fs^{-1}=s^{-1}e=s^{-1},$ $ss^{-1}=e$ and $s^{-1}s=f,$ which is a property enjoyed by…
An element of a ring R is called clean if it is the sum of an idempotent and a unit. A ring R is called clean if each of its element is clean. An element r \in R called regular if r = ryr for some y \in R. The ring R is regular if each of its element is regular. In this paper we define a ring is r-clean if each of its elements is the sum of a regular and an idempotent element. We give some relations between r-clean and clean rings. Finally we investigate some properties of r-clean rings.
A ring $R$ with an involution * is called (strongly) *-clean if every element of $R$ is the sum of a unit and a projection (that commute). All *-clean rings are clean. Va${\rm \check{s}}$ [L. Va${\rm \check{s}}$, *-Clean rings; some clean and almost clean Baer *-rings and von Neumann algebras, J. Algebra 324 (12) (2010) 3388-3400] asked whether there exists a *-ring that is clean but not *-clean and whether a unit regular and *-regular ring is strongly *-clean. In this paper, we answer both questions by several examples. Moreover, some characterizations of unit regular and *-regular rings are …
A ring is clean (resp. almost clean) if each of its elements is the sum of a unit (resp. regular element) and an idempotent. In this paper we define the analogous notion for *-rings: a *-ring is *-clean (resp. almost *-clean) if its every element is the sum of a unit (resp. regular element) and a projection. Although *-clean is a stronger notion than clean, for some *-rings we demonstrate that it is more natural to use. The theorem on cleanness of unit-regular rings from [V. P. Camillo, D. Khurana, A Characterization of Unit Regular Rings, Communications in Algebra, 29 (5) (2001) 2293-2295] is…
A ring is SSP if the sum of two direct summands is a direct summand. A ring has internal cancellation if every its (von Neumann) regular elements are unit-regular. We show that in an SSP ring having internal cancellation, any regular element is special clean. Our main results also imply that for any SSP ring internal cancellation and idempotent stable range $1$ coincide with each other. Internal cancellation over SSP was then characterized by special clean elements.
In this paper, the explicit form of maximal elements, known as shorted operators, in a subring of a von Neumann regular ring has been obtained. As an application of the main theorem, the unique shorted operator (of electrical circuits) which was introduced by Anderson-Trapp has been derived.
We investigate conditions under which the endomorphism ring of the Leavitt path algebra $L_{K}(E)$ possesses various ring and module-theoretical properties such as being von Neumann regular, $π$-regular, strongly $π$-regular or self-injective. We also describe conditions under which $L_{K}(E)$ is continuous as well as automorphism invariant as a right $L_{K}(E)$-module.
Faithful representations of regular $\ast$-rings and modular complemented lattices with involution within orthosymmetric sesquilinear spaces are studied within the framework of Universal Algebra. In particular, the correspondence between classes of spaces and classes of representables is analyzed; for a class of spaces which is closed under ultraproducts and non-degenerate finite dimensional subspaces, the latter are shown to be closed under complemented [regular] subalgebras, homomorphic images, and ultraproducts and being generated by those members which are associated with finite dimensiona…
Let R be a unit-regular ring, and let a,b,c in R satisfy aba=aca. If ac and ba are group invertible, we prove that ac is similar to ba. Furthermore, if ac and ba are Drazin invertible, then their Drazin inverses are similar. For any n\times n complex matrices A,B,C with ABA = ACA ,we prove that AC and BA are similar if and only if their k-powers have the same rank. These generalize the known Flanders' theorem proved by Hartwig.
We describe relations between maximal subfields in a division ring and in its rational extensions. More precisely, we prove that properties such as being Galois or purely inseparable over the centre generically carry over from one to another. We provide an application to enveloping skewfields in positive characteristics. Namely, there always exist two maximal subfields of the enveloping skewfield of a solvable Lie algebra, such that one is Galois and the second purely inseparable of exponent 1 over the centre. This extends results of Schue in the restricted case. Along the way we provide a des…
This article deals mostly with the following question: when is the classical ring of quotients of a commutative ring a ring of stable range 1? We introduce the concepts of a ring of (von Neumann) regular range 1, a ring of semihereditary range 1, a ring of regular range 1, a semihereditary local ring, a regular local ring. We find relationships between the introduced classes of rings and known ones, in particular, it is established that a commutative indecomposable almost clean ring is a regular local ring. A commutative any ring of idempotent regular range 1 is an almost clean ring. It is sho…
In this note, we show that any epimorphism originating at a von Neumann regular ring (not necessary commutative) is a universal localization. As an application, we prove that the Telescope Conjecture holds for the unbounded derived categories of von Neumann regular rings (not necessary commutative).
The rings whose simple right modules are absolutely pure are called right $SAP$-rings. We give a new characterization of right $SAP$ rings, right $V$ rings, and von Neumann regular rings. We also obtain a new decomposition theory of right selfinjective von Neumann regular rings. The relationships between $SAP$-rings, $V$-rings, and von Neumann regular rings are explored. Some recent results obtained by Faith are generalized and the results of Wu-Xia are strengthened.
In this paper we give a characterisation of real closure * of regular rings, which is quite similar to the characterisation of real closure * of Baer regular rings seen in [4]. We also characterize Baer-ness of regular rings using near-open maps. The last part of this work will concentrate on classifying the real closure * of Baer and non-Baer regular rings (upto isomorphisms) using continuous sections of the support map, we construct a topology on this set for the Baer case. For the case of non-Baer regular rings, it will be shown that almost no information of the ring structure of the Baer h…
We study some generalizations of the notion of regular crossed products K*G. For the case when K is an algebraically closed field, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the twisted group ring K*G to be an n-weakly regular ring, a $ξ^* N$-ring or a ring without nilpotent elements.
Let G be a group and let K be a field of characteristic zero. We shall prove that KG can be embedded into a von Neumann unit-regular ring. In the course of the proof, we shall obtain a result relevant to the Atiyah conjecture.
It is known that a linear two-weight code $C$ over a finite field $\F_q$ corresponds both to a multiset in a projective space over $\F_q$ that meets every hyperplane in either $a$ or $b$ points for some integers $a<b$, and to a strongly regular graph whose vertices may be identified with the codewords of $C$. Here we extend this classical result to the case of a ring-linear code with exactly two nonzero homogeneous weights and multisets of points in an associated projective ring geometry. We will show that a two-weight code over a finite Frobenius ring gives rise to a strongly regular graph, a…
