Replacing invertibility with quasi-invertibility in Bass' first stable range condition we discover a new class of rings, the QB-rings. These constitute a considerable enlargement of the class of rings with stable rank one (B-rings), and include examples like the ring of endomorphisms of a vector space over a field F, and the ring of all row- and column- finite matrices over F. We show that the category of QB-rings is stable under the formation of corners, ideals and quotients, as well as matrices and direct limits. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for an extension of QB-rings to be again a QB-ring, and show that extensions of B-rings often lead to QB-rings. Specializing to the category of exchange rings we characterize the subset of exchange QB-rings as those in which every von Neumann regular element extends to a maximal regular element, i.e. a quasi-invertible element. Finally we show that the C*- algebras that are QB-rings are exactly the extremally rich C*-algebras previously studied by L.G. Brown and the second author.
Let R be a ring with a derivation δ. In this paper, we prove that an analogue of Amitsur's property holds for left T-nilpotent radideals of pseudo-differential operator rings R((x^{-1}; δ)), where R is a delta-compatible ring. As a direct consequence of this fact, we obtain an alternative characterization of the prime radical of R((x^{-1}; δ)).
Let $K$ be an {\em arbitrary} field of characteristic $p>0$ and $\CD (P_n)$ be the ring of differential operators on a polynomial algebra $P_n$ in $n$ variables. A long anticipated {\em analogue of the inequality of Bernstein} is proved for the ring $\CD (P_n)$. On the way, analogues of the concepts of (Gelfand-Kirillov) {\em dimension, multiplicity, holonomic modules} are found in prime characteristic (giving answers to old questions of finding such analogs). An analogue of the {\em Quillen's Lemma} is proved for simple {\em finitely presented} $\CD (P_n)$-modules. In contrast to the character…
We introduce a generalisation of Condition (K) to finitely separated graphs and show that it is equivalent to essential freeness of the associated partial action as well as the exchange property of any of the associated tame algebras. As a consequence, we can show that any tame separated graph algebra with the exchange property is separative.
Messages in communication networks often are considered as "discrete" taking values in some finite alphabet (e.g. a finite field). However, if we want to consider for example communication based on analogue signals, we will have to consider messages that might be functions selected from an infinite function space. In this paper, we extend linear network coding over finite/discrete alphabets/message space to the infinite/continuous case. The key to our approach is to view the space of operators that acts linearly on a space of signals as a module over a ring. It turns out that modules over many…
It is proved that centrally essential rings, whose additive groups of finite rank are torsion-free groups of finite rank, are quasi-invariant but not necessarily invariant. Torsion-free Abelian groups of finite rank with centrally essential endomorphism rings are faithful. The paper will appear in Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie / Contributions to Algebra and Geometry.
Let A be a semprime, right noetherian ring equipped with an automorphism alpha, and let B := A[[y; alpha]] denote the corresponding skew power series ring (which is also semiprime and right noetherian). We prove that the Goldie ranks of A and B are equal. We also record applications to induced ideals.
Given a ring $R$, the notion of Sylvester rank function was conceived within the context of Cohn's classification theory of epic division $R$-rings. In this paper we study and describe the space of Sylvester rank functions on certain families of rings, including Dedekind domains, simple left noetherian rings and skew Laurent polynomial rings $\mathcal{D}[t^{\pm 1};τ]$ for any division ring $\mathcal{D}$ and any automorphism $τ$ of $\mathcal{D}$.
A ring $R$ satisfies the {\it strong rank condition} (SRC) if, for every natural number $n$, the free $R$-submodules of $R^n$ all have rank $\leq n$. Let $G$ be a group and $R$ a ring strongly graded by $G$ such that the base ring $R_1$ is a domain. Using an argument originated by Laurent Bartholdi for studying cellular automata, we prove that $R$ satisfies SRC if and only if $R_1$ satisfies SRC and $G$ is amenable. The special case of this result for group rings allows us to prove a characterization of amenability involving the group von Neumann algebra that was conjectured by Wolfgang Lück. …
We consider the problem of classifying (possibly noncommutative) R-algebras of low rank over an arbitrary base ring R. We first classify algebras by their degree, and we relate the class of algebras of degree 2 to algebras with a standard involution. We then investigate a class of exceptional rings of degree 2 which occur in every rank n >= 1 and show that they essentially characterize all algebras of degree 2 and rank 3.
Any superrosy division ring (i.e. a division ring equipped with an abstract notion of rank) is shown to be centrally finite. Furthermore, division rings satisfying a generalized chain condition on definable subgroups are studied. In particular, a division ring of burden n has dimension at most n over its center, and any definable group of definable automorphisms of a field of burden n has size at most n. Additionally, interpretable division rings in o-minimal structures are shown to be algebraically closed, real closed or the quaternions over a real closed field.
The assignment (nonstable K_0-theory), that to a ring R associates the monoid V(R) of Murray-von Neumann equivalence classes of idempotent infinite matrices with only finitely nonzero entries over R, extends naturally to a functor. We prove the following lifting properties of that functor: (1) There is no functor F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with normalized positive homomorphisms to exchange rings, such that VF is equivalent to the identity. (2) There is no functor F, from simplicial monoids with order-unit with normalized positive embeddings to C*-algebras of real rank 0 (resp.,…
For $c\geq 2$, the free centre-by-(nilpotent-of-class-c-1)-by abelian Lie ring on a set $X$ is the quotient $L/[(L')^c,L]$ where $L$ is the free Lie ring on $X$, and $(L')^c$ denotes the $c$th term of the lower central series of the derived ideal $L'=L^2$ of $L$. In this paper we give a complete description of the torsion subgroup of its additive group in the case where $|X|=2$ and $c$ is a prime number.
This paper extends the study of rank-metric codes in extension fields $\mathbb{L}$ equipped with an arbitrary Galois group $G = \mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{L}/\mathbb{K})$. We propose a framework for studying these codes as subspaces of the group algebra $\mathbb{L}[G]$, and we relate this point of view with usual notions of rank-metric codes in $\mathbb{L}^N$ or in $\mathbb{K}^{N\times N}$, where $N = [\mathbb{L} : \mathbb{K}]$. We then adapt the notion of error-correcting pairs to this context, in order to provide a non-trivial decoding algorithm for these codes. We then focus on the case where $G$…
We give an algorithm for computing the factor ring of a given ideal in a Dedekind domain with finite rank, which runs in deterministic and polynomial-time. We provide two applications of the algorithm: judging whether a given ideal is prime or prime power. The main algorithm is based on basis representation of finite rings which is computed via Hermite and Smith normal forms.
A commutative ring R has finite rank r, if each ideal of R is generated at most by r elements. A commutative ring R has the r-generator property, if each finitely generated ideal of R can be generated by r elements. Such rings are closely related to Prüfer domains. In the present paper we investigate some analogs of these concepts for modules over group rings.
B. Blackadar recently proved that any full corner $pAp$ in a unital C*-algebra $A$ has K-theoretic stable rank greater than or equal to the stable rank of $A$. (Here $p$ is a projection in $A$, and fullness means that $ApA=A$.) This result is extended to arbitrary (unital) rings $A$ in the present paper: If $p$ is a full idempotent in $A$, then $sr(pAp) \geq sr(A)$. The proofs rely partly on algebraic analogs of Blackadar's methods, and partly on a new technique for reducing problems of higher stable rank to a concept of stable rank one for skew (rectangular) corners $pAq$. The main result yie…
We study quantum Schubert varieties from the point of view of regularity conditions. More precisely, we show that these rings are domains which are maximal orders and are AS-Cohen-Macaulay and we determine which of them are AS-Gorenstein. One key fact that enables us to prove these results is that quantum Schubert varieties are quantum graded algebras with a straightening law that have a unique minimal element in the defining poset. We prove a general result showing when such quantum graded algebras are maximal orders. Finally, we exploit these results to show that quantum determinantal rings …
We define a functor which gives the "global rank of a quiver representation" and prove that it has nice properties which make it a generalization of the rank of a linear map. We demonstrate how to construct other "rank functors" for a quiver Q, which induce ring homomorphisms (called "rank functions") from the representation ring of Q to Z. These rank functions give discrete numerical invariants of quiver representations, useful for computing tensor product multiplicities of representations and determining some structure of the representation ring. We also show that in characteristic 0, rank f…
Generalised quantum determinantal rings are the analogue in quantum matrices of Schubert varieties. Maximal orders are the noncommutative version of integrally closed rings. In this paper, we show that generalised quantum determinantal rings are maximal orders. The cornerstone of the proof is a description of generalised quantum determinantal rings, up to a localisation, as skew polynomial extensions.
Let $H$ be a finite dimensional pointed rank one Hopf algebra of nilpotent type. We first determine all finite dimensional indecomposable $H$-modules up to isomorphism, and then establish the Clebsch-Gordan formulas for the decompositions of the tensor products of indecomposable $H$-modules by virtue of almost split sequences. The Green ring $r(H)$ of $H$ will be presented in terms of generators and relations. It turns out that the Green ring $r(H)$ is commutative and is generated by one variable over the Grothendieck ring $G_0(H)$ of $H$ modulo one relation. Moreover, $r(H)$ is Frobenius and …
We study quantum analogues of quotient varieties, namely quantum grassmannians and quantum determinantal rings, from the point of view of regularity conditions. More precisely, we show that these rings are AS-Cohen-Macaulay and determine which of them are AS-Gorenstein. Our method is inspired by the one developed by De Concini, Eisenbud and Procesi in the commutative case. Thus, we introduce and study the notion of a quantum graded algebra with a staightening law on a partially ordered set, showing in particular that, among such algebras, those whose underlying poset is wonderful are AS-Cohen-…
We present a method to generate all fusion rings of a specific rank and multiplicity. This method was used to generate exhaustive lists of fusion rings up to order 9 for several multiplicities. We introduce a class of non-commutative fusion rings based on a group with transitive action on a set. This generalizes the Tambara-Yamagami (TY) and Haagerup- Izumi (HI) fusion rings. We give an example of such a ring which is categorifiable and is not of TY or HI type. The structure of non-commutative fusion rings with a subgroup is reviewed, and the one-and two-particle extensions of groups are class…
We apply recent results on the rank of elements of rings to study the structure of generalized corner rings $aRa$, where $R$ is a unital ring and $a$ an element of $R$. We give a complete description of the structure of $aRa$ when $a^2$ has finite rank and provide an example to show that this assumption is necessary and optimal.
In this paper we obtain sharp results for Waring's problem over general finite rings, by using a combination of Artin-Wedderburn theory and Hensel's lemma and building on new proofs of analogous results over finite fields that are achieved using spectral graph theory. We also prove an analogue of Sárközy's theorem for finite fields.
