The present paper is dedicated to the study of the global existence for the inviscid two-dimensional Boussinesq system. We focus on finite energy data with bounded vorticity and we find out that, under quite a natural additional assumption on the initial temperature, there exists a global unique solution. None smallness conditions are imposed on the data. The global existence issues for infinite energy initial velocity, and for the Bénard system are also discussed.
We address the well-posedness of the 2D (Euler)-Boussinesq equations with zero viscosity and positive diffusivity in the polygonal-like domains with Yudovich's type data, which gives a positive answer to part of the questions raised in 2011 [Lai-Pan-Zhao, Initial boundary value problem for two-dimensional viscous Boussinesq equations, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 199 (2011), no. 3, 739-760]. Our analysis on the the polygonal-like domains essentially relies on the recent elliptic regularity results for such domains proved in 2013 [Bardos-Plinio-Temam, The Euler equations in planar nonsmooth convex…
We deal with the local well-posedness theory for the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data of Yudovich type. The problem is in some sense critical due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-density formulation. We give a positive answer for a special sub-class of Yudovich data including smooth and singular vortex patches. For the latter case we assume in addition that the initial density is constant around the singular part of the patch boundary.
We prove that given initial data $ω_0\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2)$, forcing $g\in L^\infty(0,T; L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2))$, and any $T>0$, the solutions $u^ν$ of Navier-Stokes converge strongly in $L^\infty(0,T;W^{1,p}(\mathbb{T}^2))$ for any $p\in [1,\infty)$ to the unique Yudovich weak solution $u$ of the Euler equations. A consequence is that vorticity distribution functions converge to their inviscid counterparts. As a byproduct of the proof, we establish continuity of the Euler solution map for Yudovich solutions in the $L^p$ vorticity topology. The main tool in these proofs is a uniformly co…
In this paper we consider the inviscid 2D Boussinesq equation on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^2)$, $s > 2$. Using a geometric approach we show that for any $T > 0$ the corresponding solution map, $(u(0),θ(0)) \mapsto (u(T),θ(T))$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous.
We consider the inviscid limit for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations in the class of integrable and bounded vorticity fields. It is expected that the difference between the Navier--Stokes and Euler velocity fields vanishes in $L^2$ with an order proportional to the square root of the viscosity constant $ν$. Here, we provide an order $\left(ν/|\logν|\right)^{\frac12\exp(-Ct)}$ bound, which slightly improves upon earlier results by Chemin.
In this paper, we study the problem of analyticity of smooth solutions of the inviscid Boussinesq equations. If the initial datum is real-analytic, the solution remains real-analytic on the existence interval. By an inductive method we can obtain lower bounds on the radius of spatial analyticity of the smooth solution.
We prove the local in time existence and a blow up criterion of solution in the Hölder spaces for the inviscid Boussinesq system in $R^{N},N\geq2$, under the assumptions that the initial values $θ_{0},u_{0}\in C^{r}$, with $r>1$.
In this note we consider the inviscid limit for the 3D Boussinesq equations without diffusion, under slip boundary conditions of Navier's type. We first study more closely the Navier-Stokes equations, to better understand the problem. The role of the initial data is also emphasized in connection with the vanishing viscosity limit.
We establish global-posedness in time for the viscous Boussinesq equations in two dimensions of space with temperature-dependent diffusivity in the framework of a smooth vortex patch. We also provide the inviscid limit for velocity, temperature, and associated flow toward the system studied very recently in \cite{Paicu-Zhu} as soon as the viscosity goes to zero, and quantify the rate of convergence.
We consider the full Navier-Stokes-Fourier system in the singular regime of small Mach and large Reynolds and Peclet numbers, with ill prepared initial data on an unbounded domain in the three dimensional Euclidean space with a compact boundary. We perform the singular limit in the framework of weak solutions and identify the Euler-Boussinesq system as the target problem.
We consider the initial value problem for the inviscid Primitive and Boussinesq equations in three spatial dimensions. We recast both systems as an abstract Euler-type system and apply the methods of convex integration of De Lellis and Székelyhidi to show the existence of infinitely many global weak solutions of the studied equations for general initial data. We also introduce an appropriate notion of dissipative solutions and show the existence of suitable initial data which generate infinitely many dissipative solutions.

In this paper, we address the problem of weak solutions of Yudovich type for the inviscid MHD equations in two dimensions. The local-in-time existence and uniqueness of these solutions sound to be hard to achieve due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-current formulation. We shall prove that the vortex patches with smooth boundary offer a suitable class of initial data for which the problem can be solved. However this is only done under a geometric constraint by assuming the boundary of the initial vorticity to be frozen in a magnetic field line. We shall also discuss th…
The inviscid 2D Boussinesq system with thermal diffusivity and multiplicative noise of transport type is studied in the $L^2$-setting. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noise, weak solutions to the stochastic 2D Boussinesq equations converge weakly to the unique solution of the deterministic viscous Boussinesq system. Consequently, the transport noise asymptotically regularizes the inviscid 2D Boussinesq system and enhances dissipation in the limit.
Inspired by the recently published paper \cite{Hassainia-Hmidi}, the current paper investigates the local well-posedness for the generalized $2d-$Boussinesq system in the setting of regular/singular vortex patch. Under the condition that the initial vorticity $ω_{0}={\bf 1}_{D_0}$, with $\partial D_0$ is a Jordan curve with a Hölder regularity $C^{1+\EE},\;0<\EE<1$ and the density is a smooth function, we show that the velocity vector field is locally well-posed and we also establish local-in-time regularity persistence of the advected patch. Although, in the case of the singular patch, the an…
We establish global existence and uniqueness theorems for the two-dimensional non-diffusive Boussinesq system with viscosity only in the horizontal direction, which arises in Ocean dynamics. This work improves the global well-posedness results established recently by R. Danchin and M. Paicu for the Boussinesq system with anisotropic viscosity and zero diffusion. Although we follow some of their ideas, in proving the uniqueness result, we have used an alternative approach by writing the transported temperature (density) as $θ= Δξ$ and adapting the techniques of V. Yudovich for the 2D incompress…
We consider the (in)stability problem of the inviscid 2D Boussinesq equations near a combination of a shear flow $v=(y,0)$ and a stratified temperature $θ=αy$ with $α>\frac{1}{4}$. We show that for any $ε>0$ there exist non-trivial explicit solutions, which are initially perturbations of size $ε$, and grow to size $1$ on a time scale $ε^{-2}$. Moreover, the (simplified) linearized problem around these non-trivial states exhibits improved upper bounds on the possible size of norm inflation for frequencies larger and smaller than $ε^{-4}$.
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
We investigate the long-time properties of the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq equations near a stably stratified Couette flow, for an initial Gevrey perturbation of size $\varepsilon$. Under the classical Miles-Howard stability condition on the Richardson number, we prove that the system experiences a shear-buoyancy instability: the density variation and velocity undergo an $O(t^{-1/2})$ inviscid damping while the vorticity and density gradient grow as $O(t^{1/2})$. The result holds at least until the natural, nonlinear timescale $t \approx \varepsilon^{-2}$. Notice that the density behav…
At the core of this article is an improved, sharp dispersive estimate for the anisotropic linear semigroup $e^{R_1 t}$ arising in both the study of the dispersive SQG equation and the inviscid Boussinesq system. We combine the decay estimate with a blow-up criterion to show how dispersion leads to long-time existence of solutions to the dispersive SQG equation, improving the results obtained using hyperbolic methods. In the setting of the inviscid Boussinesq system it turns out that linearization around a specific stationary solution leads to the same linear semigroup, so that we can make use …
We study the stability of special, stratified solutions of a 3d Boussinesq system describing an incompressible, inviscid 3d fluid with variable density (or temperature, depending on the context) under the effect of a uni-directional gravitational force. The behavior is shown to depend on the properties of an anisotropic dispersive operator with weak decay in time. However, the dispersive decay also depends on the strength of the gravity in the system and on the profile of the stratified solution, whose stability we study. We show that as the strength of the dispersion in the system tends to in…
The 2D conservative Boussinesq system describes inviscid, incompressible, buoyant fluid flow in gravity field. The possibility of finite time blow up for solutions of this system is a classical problem of mathematical hydrodynamics. We consider a 1D model of 2D Boussinesq system motivated by a particular finite time blow up scenario. We prove that finite time blow up is possible for the solutions to the model system.
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We are interested in well-posedness at a very low level of regularity. We derive dispersive and Strichartz estimates, and implement them together with a fixed point argument to solve the problem locally. Hamiltonian conservation guarantees global well-posedness for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.
Chemin has shown that solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the plane for an incompressible fluid whose initial vorticity is bounded and lies in L^2 converge in the zero-viscosity limit in the L^2-norm to a solution of the Euler equations, convergence being uniform over any finite time interval. Yudovich, assuming an initial vorticity lying in L^p for all p >= q for some q, established the uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid in a bounded domain of n-space assuming a particular bound on the growth of the L^p-norm of the initial vorticity as p grows l…
We regard the Cauchy problem for a particular Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. The system can be seen as a weak nonlocal dispersive perturbation of the shallow water system. The proof of well-posedness relies on energy estimates. However, due to the symmetry lack of the nonlinear part, in order to close the a priori estimates one has to modify the traditional energy norm in use. Hamiltonian conservation provides with global well-posedness at least for small initial data in the one dimensional settings.
We give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution to the inviscid Boussinesq system. In dimension two, we point out that it tends to infinity when the initial (relative) temperature tends to zero. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the inviscid Boussinesq system. In passing, we provide continuation criteria (of independent interest) in the $N$-dimensional case. In the second part of the paper, our method is adapted to handle the axisymmetric incompressible Euler equations with swirl.
We prove a Prodi-Serrin-type global regularity condition for the three-dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic-Boussinesq system (3D MHD-Boussinesq) without thermal diffusion, in terms of only two velocity and two magnetic components. This is the first Prodi-Serrin-type criterion for a hydrodynamic system which is not fully dissipative, and indicates that such an approach may be successful on other systems. In addition, we provide a constructive proof of the local well-posedness of solutions to the fully dissipative 3D MHD-Boussinesq system, and also the fully inviscid, irresistive, non-diffusive MHD-…
This paper is concerned with a two dimensional Whitham-Boussinesq system modelling surface waves of an inviscid incompressible fluid layer. We prove that the associated Cauchy problem is well-posed for initial data of low regularity, with existence time of scale $\mathcal O(1/\sqrtε)$, where $ε>0$ is a shallowness parameter measuring the ratio of the amplitude of the wave to the mean depth of the fluid. The key ingredients in the proof are frequency loacalised dispersive and Strichartz estimates that depend on $ε$ as well as bilinear estimates in some Strichartz norms.
In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for $(abcd)$-Boussinesq system posed on one- and two-dimensional Euclidean spaces. This model, initially introduced by Bona, Chen, and Saut, describes a small-amplitude waves on the surface of an inviscid fluid, and derived as a first-order approximation of incompressible, irrotational Euler equations. We mainly establish the ill-posedness of the system under various parameter regimes, which generalize the result of the one-dimensional BBM-BBM case by Chen and Liu. Most of results established here, we obtain the optimal result for two-dimensional B…
The two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Euler equations have been thoroughly investigated and the resolution of the global (in time) existence and uniqueness issue is currently in a satisfactory status. In contrast, the global regularity problem concerning the 2D inviscid Boussinesq equations remains widely open. In an attempt to understand this problem, we examine the damped 2D Boussinesq equations and study how damping affects the regularity of solutions. Since the damping effect is insufficient in overcoming the difficulty due to the "vortex stretching", we seek unique global small solution…
We prove local-in-time existence and uniqueness of an inviscid Boussinesq-type system. We assume the density equation contains nonzero diffusion and that our initial vorticity and density belong to a space of borderline Besov type.
We consider the evolution of two incompressible fluids with homogeneous densities $ρ_-<ρ_+$ subject to gravity described by the inviscid Boussinesq equations and provide the explicit relaxation of the associated differential inclusion. The existence of a subsolution to the relaxation allows one to conclude the existence of turbulently mixing solutions to the original Boussinesq system. As a specific application we investigate subsolutions emanating from the classical Rayleigh-Taylor initial configuration where the two fluids are separated by a horizontal interface with the heavier fluid being …
We explore the local well-posedness theory for the 2d inviscid Boussinesq system when the vorticity is given by a singular patch. We give a significant improvement of \cite{Hassainia-Hmidi} by replacing their compatibility assumption on the density with a constraint on its platitude degree on the singular set. The second main contribution focuses on the same issue for the partial viscous Boussinesq system. We establish a uniform LWP theory with respect to the vanishing conductivity. This issue is much more delicate than the inviscid case and one should carefully deal with various difficulties …
The global regularity problem concerning the inviscid Boussinesq equations remains an open problem. In an attempt to understand this problem, we examine the damped Boussinesq equations and study how damping affects the regularity of solutions. In this paper, we consider the global existence to the damped Boussinesq equations with a class of large initial data, whose $B^{s}_{p,r}$ or $\dot{B}^{s}_{p,r}$ norms can be arbitrarily large. The idea is splitting the linear Boussinesq equations from the damped Boussinesq equations, the exponentially decaying solution of the former equations together w…
2D inviscid Boussinesq equations and 3D axisymmetric Euler equations: (1) A unification ($Em$), (2) Finite-time blow-up of two unified $(1+1)$D systems rigorously derived from ($Em$)
We revisit a family of infinite-energy solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations proposed by Gibbon et al. [9] and shown to blowup in finite time by Constantin [6]. By adding a damping term to the momentum equation we examine how the damping coefficient can arrest this blowup. Further, we show that similar infinite-energy solutions of the inviscid 3D Boussinesq system with damping can develop a singularity in finite time as long as the damping effects are insufficient to arrest the (undamped) 3D Euler blowup in the associated damped 3D Euler system.
