We prove that given initial data $ω_0\in L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2)$, forcing $g\in L^\infty(0,T; L^\infty(\mathbb{T}^2))$, and any $T>0$, the solutions $u^ν$ of Navier-Stokes converge strongly in $L^\infty(0,T;W^{1,p}(\mathbb{T}^2))$ for any $p\in [1,\infty)$ to the unique Yudovich weak solution $u$ of the Euler equations. A consequence is that vorticity distribution functions converge to their inviscid counterparts. As a byproduct of the proof, we establish continuity of the Euler solution map for Yudovich solutions in the $L^p$ vorticity topology. The main tool in these proofs is a uniformly controlled loss of regularity property of the linear transport by Yudovich solutions. Our results provide a partial foundation for the Miller--Robert statistical equilibrium theory of vortices as it applies to slightly viscous fluids.
The present paper is dedicated to the study of the global existence for the inviscid two-dimensional Boussinesq system. We focus on finite energy data with bounded vorticity and we find out that, under quite a natural additional assumption on the initial temperature, there exists a global unique solution. None smallness conditions are imposed on the data. The global existence issues for infinite energy initial velocity, and for the Bénard system are also discussed.
It is challenging to perform a multiscale analysis of mesoscopic systems exhibiting singularities at the macroscopic scale. In this paper, we study the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equations $$\mathrm{St} \partial_t F + v\cdot \nabla_x F = \frac{1}{\mathrm{Kn}} Q(F ,F ) $$ toward the singular solutions of 2D incompressible Euler equations whose vorticity is unbounded $$\partial_t u + u \cdot \nabla_x u + \nabla_x p = 0,\text{div }u =0.$$ We obtain a microscopic description of the singularity through the so-called kinetic vorticity and understand its behavior in the vicinity of the macro…
We deal with the local well-posedness theory for the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq system with rough initial data of Yudovich type. The problem is in some sense critical due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-density formulation. We give a positive answer for a special sub-class of Yudovich data including smooth and singular vortex patches. For the latter case we assume in addition that the initial density is constant around the singular part of the patch boundary.
In this paper, we address the problem of weak solutions of Yudovich type for the inviscid MHD equations in two dimensions. The local-in-time existence and uniqueness of these solutions sound to be hard to achieve due to some terms involving Riesz transforms in the vorticity-current formulation. We shall prove that the vortex patches with smooth boundary offer a suitable class of initial data for which the problem can be solved. However this is only done under a geometric constraint by assuming the boundary of the initial vorticity to be frozen in a magnetic field line. We shall also discuss th…
We consider the inviscid limit for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations in the class of integrable and bounded vorticity fields. It is expected that the difference between the Navier--Stokes and Euler velocity fields vanishes in $L^2$ with an order proportional to the square root of the viscosity constant $ν$. Here, we provide an order $\left(ν/|\logν|\right)^{\frac12\exp(-Ct)}$ bound, which slightly improves upon earlier results by Chemin.
Consider Yudovich solutions to the incompressible Euler equations with bounded initial vorticity in bounded planar domains or in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We present a purely Lagrangian proof that the solution map is strongly continuous in $L^p$ for all $p\in [1, \infty)$ and is weakly-$*$ continuous in $L^\infty$.
The study of the 2D Euler equation with non Lipschitzian velocity was initiated by Yudovich in [19] where a result of global well-posedness for essentially bounded vorticity is proved. A lot of works have been since dedicated to the extension of this result to more general spaces. To the best of our knowledge all these contributions lack the proof of at least one of the following three fundamental properties: global existence, uniqueness and regularity persistence. In this paper we introduce a Banach space containing unbounded functions for which all these properties are shown to be satisfied.
We construct global-in-time, unique solutions of the two-dimensional Euler equations in a Yudovich type space and a $\rm bmo$-type space. First, we show the regularity of solutions for the two-dimensional Euler equations in the Spanne space involving an unbounded and non-decaying vorticity. Next, we establish an estimate with a logarithmic loss of regularity for the transport equation in a bmo-type space by developing classical analysis tool such as the John-Nirenberg inequality. We also optimize estimates of solutions to the vorticity-stream formulation of the two-dimensional Euler equations …

Singular vorticty solutions of the incompressible 3D-Euler equation are constructed which satisfy the BKM criterion (cf. [2]). The construction is done by inviscid limits of vorticity solutions of transformed incompressible Navier Stokes type equations with a damping potential term, where the latter equations admit a global regular solution for positive viscosity. The inviscid limit vorticity solution of the incompressible Euler vorticity equation becomes singular at a point of the boundary of a finite domain.
Consider inviscid fluids in a channel {-1<y<1}. For the Couette flow v_0=(y,0), the vertical velocity of solutions to the linearized Euler equation at v_0 decays in time. At the nonlinear level, such inviscid damping has not been proved. First, we show that in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow, there exist non-parallel steady flows with arbitrary minimal horizontal period. This implies that nonlinear inviscid damping is not true in any (vorticity) H^{s}(s<(3/2)) neighborhood of Couette flow and for any horizontal period. Indeed, the long time behavior in such neighbor…
For the two dimensional Euler equations, a classical result by Yudovich states that solutions are unique in the class of bounded vorticity; it is a celebrated open problem whether this uniqueness result can be extended in other integrability spaces. We prove in this note that such uniqueness theorem fails in the class of vector fields $u$ with uniformly bounded kinetic energy and vorticity in the Lorentz space $L^{1, \infty}$.
In a recent paper, the authors investigated the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid, assuming that the flow was irrotational. The aim of the present paper is to pursue this study by considering the more general case of a flow with vorticity. It is shown here that the local controllability of the position and the velocity of the underwater vehicle (a vector in R 12) holds in a flow with vorticity whenever it holds in a flow without vorticity.
Chemin has shown that solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the plane for an incompressible fluid whose initial vorticity is bounded and lies in L^2 converge in the zero-viscosity limit in the L^2-norm to a solution of the Euler equations, convergence being uniform over any finite time interval. Yudovich, assuming an initial vorticity lying in L^p for all p >= q for some q, established the uniqueness of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible fluid in a bounded domain of n-space assuming a particular bound on the growth of the L^p-norm of the initial vorticity as p grows l…
We consider a sequence of Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations on a bounded domain, in the vanishing viscosity limit. We provide sufficient conditions on the associated vorticity measures, away from the boundary, which ensure that as the viscosity vanishes the sequence converges to a weak solution of the Euler equations. These assumptions are consistent with vortex sheet solutions of the Euler equations.
We prove uniqueness and existence of the weak solutions of Euler equations with helical symmetry, with initial vorticity in $L^{\infty}$ under "no vorticity stretching" geometric constraint. Our article follows the argument of the seminal work of Yudovich. We adjust the argument to resolve the difficulties which are specific to the helical symmetry.
In this paper we prove the uniform-in-time $L^p$ convergence in the inviscid limit of a family $ω^ν$ of solutions of the $2D$ Navier-Stokes equations towards a renormalized/Lagrangian solution $ω$ of the Euler equations. We also prove that, in the class of solutions with bounded vorticity, it is possible to obtain a rate for the convergence of $ω^ν$ to $ω$ in $L^p$. Finally, we show that solutions of the Euler equations with $L^p$ vorticity, obtained in the vanishing viscosity limit, conserve the kinetic energy. The proofs are given by using both a (stochastic) Lagrangian approach and an Euler…
In this paper, we prove the linear damping for the 2-D Euler equations around a class of shear flows under the assumption that the linearized operator has no embedding eigenvalues. For the symmetric flows, we obtain the explicit decay estimates of the velocity, which is the same as one for monotone shear flows. We confirm a new dynamical phenomena found by Bouchet and Morita: the depletion of the vorticity at the stationary streamlines, which could be viewed as a new mechanism leading to the damping for the base flows with stationary streamlines.
Coherent vortices are often observed to persist for long times in turbulent 2D flows even at very high Reynolds numbers and are observed in experiments and computer simulations to potentially be asymptotically stable in a weak sense for the 2D Euler equations. We consider the incompressible 2D Euler equations linearized around a radially symmetric, strictly monotone decreasing vorticity distribution. For sufficiently regular data, we prove the inviscid damping of the $θ$-dependent radial and angular velocity fields with the optimal rates $\|u^r(t)\| \lesssim \langle t \rangle^{-1}$ and $\|u^θ(…
In this paper, we study the inviscid limit of the free surface incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with or without surface tension. By delicate estimates, we prove the weak boundary layer of the velocity of the free surface Navier-Stokes equations and the existence of strong or weak vorticity layer for different conditions. When the limit of the difference between the initial Navier-Stokes vorticity and the initial Euler vorticity is nonzero, or the tangential projection on the free surface of the Euler strain tensor multiplying by normal vector is nonzero, there exists a strong vorticity l…
In a recent paper [5], the global well-posedness of the two-dimensional Euler equation with vorticity in \mbox{$L^1\cap LBMO$} was proved, where $ LBMO$ is a Banach space which is strictly imbricated between \mbox{$L^\infty$} and $BMO$. In the present paper we prove a global result of inviscid limit of the Navier-stokes system with data in this space and other spaces with the same BMO flavor. Some results of local uniform estimates on solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, independent of the viscosity, are also obtained.
We study the 2D Navier-Stokes equations linearized around the Couette flow $(y,0)^t$ in the periodic channel $\mathbb T \times [-1,1]$ with no-slip boundary conditions in the vanishing viscosity $ν\to 0$ limit. We split the vorticity evolution into the free evolution (without a boundary) and a boundary corrector that is exponentially localized to at most an $O(ν^{1/3})$ boundary layer. If the initial vorticity perturbation is supported away from the boundary, we show inviscid damping of both the velocity and the vorticity associated to the boundary layer. For example, our $L^2_t L^1_y$ estimat…
In this paper, we investigate the singularity near the degenerate points of the steady axisymmetric flow with general vorticity of an inviscid incompressible fluid acted on by gravity and with a free surface. We called the points on the free boundary at which the gradient of the stream function vanishes as the degenerate points. The main results in this paper give the different classifications of the singularity near the degenerate points on the free surface. More precisely, we obtained that at the stagnation points, the possible profiles must be a Stokes corner, or a horizontal cusp, or a hor…
In this expository work, we present Vishik's theorem on non-unique weak solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations on the whole space, \[ \partial_t ω+ u \cdot \nabla ω= f \, , \quad u = \frac{1}{2π} \frac{x^\perp}{|x|^2} \ast ω\, , \] with initial vorticity $ω_0 \in L^1 \cap L^p$ and $f \in L^1_t (L^1 \cap L^p)_x$, $p < \infty$. His theorem demonstrates, in particular, the sharpness of the Yudovich class. An important intermediate step is the rigorous construction of an unstable vortex, which is of independent physical and mathematical interest. We follow the strategy of Vishik but allo…
We give a vorticity-dynamical proof of $C^1\cap H^2$-illposedness of the 2D Euler equations. Our construction shows that the unique Yudovich solution escapes both $C^1$ and $H^2$ instantaneously.
In this paper, we investigate the convergence rates of inviscid limits for the free-boundary problems of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with or without surface tension in $\mathbb{R}^3$, where the magnetic field is identically constant on the surface and outside of the domain. First, we establish the vorticity, the normal derivatives and the regularity structure of the solutions, and develop a priori co-norm estimates including time derivatives by the vorticity system. Second, we obtain two independent sufficient conditions for the existence of strong vorticity layers: (I) the l…
In their classical work Caflisch and Sammartino proved the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for well-prepared data with analytic regularity in the half-space. Their proof is based on the detailed construction of Prandtl's boundary layer asymptotic expansions. In this paper, we give a direct proof of the inviscid limit for general analytic data without having to construct Prandtl's boundary layer correctors. Our analysis makes use of the boundary vorticity formulation and the abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem on analytic boundary layer function spaces that capture…
We establish the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ for initial data having vorticity as a superposition of point vortices and a regular component. In particular, this rigorously justifies the vortex-wave system from the physical Navier-Stokes flows in the vanishing viscosity limit, a model that was introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti in the early 90s to describe the dynamics of point vortices in a regular ambient vorticity background. The proof rests on the previous analysis of Gallay in his derivation of the vortex-point system.
First, we consider Kolmogorov flow (a shear flow with a sinusoidal velocity profile) for 2D Navier-Stokes equation on a torus. Such flows, also called bar states, have been numerically observed as one type of metastable states in the study of 2D turbulence. For both rectangular and square tori, we prove that the non-shear part of perturbations near Kolmogorov flow decays in a time scale much shorter than the viscous time scale. The results are obtained for both the linearized NS equations with any initial vorticity in L^2, and the nonlinear NS equation with initial L^2 norm of vorticity of the…
In this work we study the long time, inviscid limit of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations near the periodic Couette flow, and in particular, we confirm at the nonlinear level the qualitative behavior predicted by Kelvin's 1887 linear analysis. At high Reynolds number Re, we prove that the solution behaves qualitatively like 2D Euler for times t \lesssim Re^(1/3), and in particular exhibits inviscid damping (e.g. the vorticity weakly approaches a shear flow). For times t \gtrsim Re^(1/3), which is sooner than the natural dissipative time scale O(Re), the viscosity becomes dominant and the streamwis…
We prove the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for data that are analytic only near the boundary in a general two-dimensional bounded domain. Our proof is direct, using the vorticity formulation with a nonlocal boundary condition, the explicit semigroup of the linear Stokes problem near the flatten boundary, and the standard wellposedness theory of Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces away from the boundary.
We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.
When the velocity field is not a priori known to be globally almost Lipschitz, global uniqueness of solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations has been established only in some special cases, and the solutions to which these results apply share the property that the diffuse part of the vorticity is constant near the points where the velocity is insufficiently regular. Assuming that the latter holds initially, the challenge is then to propagate this property along the Euler dynamic via an appropriate control of the Lagrangian trajectories. In domains with obtuse corners and sufficiently s…
We prove global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions for two dimensional inviscid Rotating Shallow Water system with small initial data subject to the zero-relative-vorticity constraint. One of the key steps is a reformulation of the problem into a symmetric quasilinear Klein-Gordon system, for which the global existence of classical solutions is then proved with combination of the vector field approach and the normal forms. We also probe the case of general initial data and reveal a lower bound for the lifespan that is almost inversely proportional to the size of the initi…
