A Steinhaus matrix is a binary square matrix of size $n$ which is symmetric, with diagonal of zeros, and whose upper-triangular coefficients satisfy $a_{i,j}=a_{i-1,j-1}+a_{i-1,j}$ for all $2\leq i<j\leq n$. Steinhaus matrices are determined by their first row. A Steinhaus graph is a simple graph whose adjacency matrix is a Steinhaus matrix. We give a short new proof of a theorem, due to Dymacek, which states that even Steinhaus graphs, i.e. those with all vertex degrees even, have doubly-symmetric Steinhaus matrices. In 1979 Dymacek conjectured that the complete graph on two vertices $K_2$ is the only regular Steinhaus graph of odd degree. Using Dymacek's theorem, we prove that if $(a_{i,j})_{1\leq i,j\leq n}$ is a Steinhaus matrix associated with a regular Steinhaus graph of odd degree then its sub-matrix $(a_{i,j})_{2\leq i,j\leq n-1}$ is a multi-symmetric matrix, that is a doubly-symmetric matrix where each row of its upper-triangular part is a symmetric sequence. We prove that the multi-symmetric Steinhaus matrices of size $n$ whose Steinhaus graphs are regular modulo 4, i.e. where all vertex degrees are equal modulo 4, only depend on $\lceil \frac{n}{24}\rceil$ parameters for all even numbers $n$, and on $\lceil \frac{n}{30}\rceil$ parameters in the odd case. This result permits us to verify the Dymacek's conjecture up to 1500 vertices in the odd case.
In this paper, we partially solve an open problem, due to J.C. Molluzzo in 1976, on the existence of balanced Steinhaus triangles modulo a positive integer $n$, that are Steinhaus triangles containing all the elements of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ with the same multiplicity. For every odd number $n$, we build an orbit in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, by the linear cellular automaton generating the Pascal triangle modulo $n$, which contains infinitely many balanced Steinhaus triangles. This orbit, in $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, is obtained from an integer sequence called the universal sequence. We show…
A binary Steinhaus triangle is a triangle of zeroes and ones that points down and with the same local rule as the Pascal triangle modulo 2. A binary Steinhaus triangle is said to be rotationally symmetric, horizontally symmetric or dihedrally symmetric if it is invariant under the 120 degrees rotation, the horizontal reflection or both, respectively. The first part of this paper is devoted to the study of linear subspaces of rotationally symmetric, horizontally symmetric and dihedrally symmetric binary Steinhaus triangles. We obtain simple explicit bases for each of them by using elementary pr…
A dessin is a $2$-cell embedding of a connected $2$-coloured bipartite graph into an orientable closed surface. A dessin is regular if its group of colour- and orientation-preserving automorphisms acts regularly on the edges. In this paper we employ group-theoretic method to determine and enumerate the isomorphism classes of regular dessins with the complete bipartite underlying graphs of odd prime power order.
We show that any connected regular graph with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues and odd-girth $2d+1$ is distance-regular, and in particular that it is a generalized odd graph.
The goal of this paper is to determine the number of perpendicularly inscribed polygons that intersect a given side of a regular polygon with an odd number of sides. This is done using circular permutations with repetition, and some special cases are calculated via circulant matrices and the Binomial Theorem. A method for finding such polygons, based on Banach's Fixed Point Theorem, is also developed.
Let $k\ge 3$ be an odd integer and let $n$ be a sufficiently large integer. We prove that the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph containing no $2$-regular subgraphs is $\binom{n-1}{k-1} + \lfloor\frac{n-1}{k} \rfloor$, and the equality holds if and only if $H$ is a full $k$-star with center $v$ together with a maximal matching omitting $v$. This verifies a conjecture of Mubayi and Verstraëte.
In this article we have derived the minimum order of an odd regular graph such that the graph has no matching. We have observed that how it is different from the case of even regular graphs. We have checked the consistency of the derived result with Petersen's theorem.
An antimagic labeling of a graph $G$ with $m$ edges is a bijection from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$ such that for all vertices $u$ and $v$, the sum of labels on edges incident to $u$ differs from that for edges incident to $v$. Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every connected graph other than the single edge $K_2$ has an antimagic labeling. We prove this conjecture for regular graphs of odd degree.
An odd $[1,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is odd and $1\le d_H(v) \le b$. Let $λ_3(G)$ be the third largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. For positive integers $r \ge 3$ and even $n$, Lu, Wu, and Yang [10] proved a lower bound for $λ_3(G)$ in an $n$-vertex $r$-regular graph $G$ to gurantee the existence of an odd $[1,b]$-factor in $G$. In this paper, we improve the bound; it is sharp for every $r$.
We study $2k$-factors in $(2r+1)$-regular graphs. Hanson, Loten, and Toft proved that every $(2r+1)$-regular graph with at most $2r$ cut-edges has a $2$-factor. We generalize their result by proving for $k\le(2r+1)/3$ that every $(2r+1)$-regular graph with at most $2r-3(k-1)$ cut-edges has a $2k$-factor. Both the restriction on $k$ and the restriction on the number of cut-edges are sharp. We characterize the graphs that have exactly $2r-3(k-1)+1$ cut-edges but no $2k$-factor. For $k>(2r+1)/3$, there are graphs without cut-edges that have no $2k$-factor, as studied by Bollobás, Saito, and Worma…
Regarding Euler's odd-strict theorem, which is the most basic partition identity, A refinement was done by Sylvester, and it was generalized by Bessenrodt to the r-regular and r-class regular cases. In this paper, we focus on the periodicity of the exponent seen on the r-regular side in Bessenrodt's generalization, and further generalize from that point of view. At the end of this paper, we also introduce a partition identity when extended without regard to the periodicity of the exponent.
The main result of D. Archdeacon, M. Conder and J. Širáň [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 366 (2014) 8, 4491-4512] implies existence of a regular, self-dual and self-Petrie dual map of any given even valency. In this paper we extend this result to any odd valency $\ge 5$. This is done by algebraic number theory and maps defined on the groups ${\rm PSL}(2,p)$ in the case of odd prime valency $\ge 5$ and valency $9$, and by coverings for the remaining odd valencies.
Assume that $ν$ is a positive integer and $δ=0, 1$ or $2$. In this paper we introduce the orthogonal graph $Γ^{2ν+δ}$ over a Galois ring of odd characteristic and prove that it is arc transitive. Moreover, we compute its parameters as a quasi-strongly regular graph. In particular, we show that $Γ^{2+δ}$ is a strongly regular graph and $Γ^{2ν+1}$ is a strictly Deza graph when $ν\geq 2$.
Recently, it has been shown that a connected graph $Γ$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues and odd-girth $2d+1$ is distance-regular. The proof of this result was based on the spectral excess theorem. In this note we present an alternative and more direct proof which does not rely on the spectral excess theorem, but on a known characterization of distance-regular graphs in terms of the predistance polynomial of degree $d$.
A $labeling$ of a digraph $D$ with $m$ arcs is a bijection from the set of arcs of $D$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$. A labeling of $D$ is $antimagic$ if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u \in V(D)$ for a labeling is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. An antimagic orientation $D$ of a graph $G$ is $antimagic$ if $D$ has an antimagic labeling. Hefetz, M$\ddot{u}$tze and Schwartz in [J. Graph Theory 64(2010)219-232] raised the question: Does every graph admits an antimagic orientation? It had been …
In this paper, we show that the largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$, where $k \ge 3$, reaches its upper bound $2Δ(G)$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of $G$, if and only if $G$ is regular. Thus the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of $G$, reaches the same upper bound, if and only if $G$ is regular and odd-bipartite. We show that an $s$-cycle $G$, as a $k$-uniform hypergraph, where $1 \le s \le k-1$, is regular if and only if there is a positive integer $q$ such that $k=q(k-s)$. We show that an even-uniform $s$-path and an even-uniform non-regular…
For integers $k \geq 2$ and $n \geq k+1$, we prove the following: If $n\cdot k$ is even, there is a connected $k$-regular graph on $n$ vertices. If $n\cdot k$ is odd, there is a connected nearly $k$-regular graph on $n$ vertices.

Let $k$, $m$ and $r$ be three integers such that $2\leq k\leq m\leq r$. Let $G$ be a $2r$-regular, $2m$-edge-connected graph of odd order. We obtain some sufficient conditions, which guarantee $G-v$ contains a $k$-factor for all $v\in V(G)$.
We prove that an eulerian graph $G$ admits a decomposition into $k$ closed trails of odd length if and only if and it contains at least $k$ pairwise edge-disjoint odd circuits and $k\equiv |E(G)|\pmod{2}$. We conjecture that a connected $2d$-regular graph of odd order with $d\ge 1$ admits a decomposition into $d$ odd closed trails sharing a common vertex and verify the conjecture for $d\le 3$. The case $d=3$ is crucial for determining the flow number of a signed eulerian graph which is treated in a separate paper (arXiv:1408.1703v2). The proof of our conjecture for $d=3$ is surprisingly diffic…
Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz conjectured that every connected undirected graph admits an antimagic orientation. In this paper we support the analogous question for distance magic labeling. Let $Γ$ be an Abelian group of order $n$. A \textit{directed $Γ$-distance magic labeling} of an oriented graph $\vec{G} = (V,A)$ of order $n$ is a bijection $\vec{l}:V \rightarrow Γ$ with the property that there is a \textit{magic constant} $μ\in Γ$ such that for every $x \in V(G)$ $ w(x) = \sum_{y \in N^{+}(x)}\vec{l}(y) - \sum_{y \in N^{-}(x)} \vec{l}(y) = μ. $ In this paper we provide an infinite family of…
We prove that if $G$ is a $2r$-regular edge graceful $(p,q)$ graph with $(r,kp)=1$ then $kG$ is edge graceful for odd $k$. We also prove that for certain specific classes of $2r$-regular edge graceful graphs it is possible to drop the requirement that $(r,kp)=1$
We consider a random walk process which prefers to visit previously unvisited edges, on the random $r$-regular graph $G_r$ for any odd $r\geq 3$. We show that this random walk process has asymptotic vertex and edge cover times $\frac{1}{r-2}n\log n$ and $\frac{r}{2(r-2)}n\log n$, respectively, generalizing the result from Cooper, Frieze and Johansson from $r = 3$ to any larger odd $r$. This completes the study of the vertex cover time for fixed $r\geq 3$, with Berenbrink, Cooper and Friedetzky having previously shown that $G_r$ has vertex cover time asymptotic to $\frac{rn}{2}$ when $r\geq 4$ …
We construct an infinite family of intriguing sets that are not tight in the Grassmann Graph of planes of PG$(n,q)$, $n\ge 5$ odd, and show that the members of the family are the smallest possible examples if $n\ge 9$ or $q\ge 25$.
Let $r$ be an odd integer, and $k$ an even integer. In this note, we present $r$-regular graphs which have no $\{k,r-k\}$-factors for all $1\le k\le {r\over2}-1$. This gives a negative answer to a problem posed by Akbari and Kano recently.
In \cite{M18}, the first author gave a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs on the additive group of finite fields by using three-valued Gauss periods. In particular, together with the result in \cite{BLMX}, it was shown that there exists a strongly regular Cayley graph with negative Latin square type parameters $(q^6,r(q^3+1),-q^3+r^2+3r,r^2+r)$, where $r=M(q^2-1)/2$, in the following cases: (i) $M=1$ and $q\equiv 3\,(\mod{4})$; (ii) $M=3$ and $q\equiv 7\,(\mod{24})$; and (iii) $M=7$ and $q\equiv 11,51\,(\mod{56})$. The existence of strongly regular Cayley graphs with the above para…
In this paper we consider the concept of preintersection numbers of a graph. These numbers are determined by the spectrum of the adjacency matrix of the graph, and generalize the intersection numbers of a distance-regular graph. By using the preintersection numbers we give some new spectral and quasi-spectral characterizations of distance-regularity, in particular for graphs with large girth or large odd-girth.
We study a generalization of strongly regular graphs. We call a graph strongly walk-regular if there is an $\ell >1$ such that the number of walks of length $\ell$ from a vertex to another vertex depends only on whether the two vertices are the same, adjacent, or not adjacent. We will show that a strongly walk-regular graph must be an empty graph, a complete graph, a strongly regular graph, a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs of the same size and isolated vertices, or a regular graph with four eigenvalues. Graphs from the first three families in this list are indeed strongly $\ell$-w…
Let m and r be two integers. Let G be a connected r-regular graph of order n and k an integer depending on m and r. For even kn, we find a best upper bound (in terms of r and m) on the third largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that G has a k-factor. When nk is odd, we give a best upper bound (in terms of r and m) on the second largest eigenvalue that is sufficient to guarantee that G is k-critical.
Motivated by a Gan-Loh-Sudakov-type problem, we introduce the regular Turán numbers, a natural variation on the classical Turán numbers for which the host graph is required to be regular. Among other results, we prove a striking supersaturation version of Mantel's theorem in the case of a regular host graph of odd order. We also characterise the graphs for which the regular Turán numbers behave classically or otherwise.
A graph is edge-distance-regular when it is distance-regular around each of its edges and it has the same intersection numbers for any edge taken as a root. In this paper we give some (combinatorial and algebraic) proofs of the fact that every edge-distance-regular graph $\G$ is distance-regular and homogeneous. More precisely, $\G$ is edge-distance-regular if and only if it is bipartite distance-regular or a generalized odd graph. Also, we obtain the relationships between some of their corresponding parameters, mainly, the distance polynomials and the intersection numbers.
The $k$-independence number of a graph is the maximum size of a set of vertices at pairwise distance greater than $k$. A graph is called $k$-partially walk-regular if the number of closed walks of a given length $l\le k$, rooted at a vertex $v$, only depends on $l$. In particular, a distance-regular graph is also $k$-partially walk-regular for any $k$. In this note, we introduce a new family of polynomials obtained from the spectrum of a graph. These polynomials, together with the interlacing technique, allow us to give tight spectral bounds on the $k$-independence number of a $k$-partially wa…
A resolving set of a graph is a set of vertices with the property that the list of distances from any vertex to those in the set uniquely identifies that vertex. In this paper, we construct a resolving set of Johnson graphs, doubled Odd graphs, doubled Grassmann graphs and twisted Grassmann graphs, respectively, and obtain the upper bounds on the metric dimension of these graphs.
In this paper, we generalize the construction of strongly regular graphs in [Y. Tan et al., Strongly regular graphs associated with ternary bent functions, J. Combin.Theory Ser. A (2010), 117, 668-682] from ternary bent functions to $p$-ary bent functions, where $p$ is an odd prime. We obtain strongly regular graphs with three types of parameters. Using certain non-quadratic $p$-ary bent functions, our constructions can give rise to new strongly regular graphs for small parameters.
This is a report on a failed attempt to construct new graphs that are strongly regular with no triangles. The approach is based on the assumption that the second subconstituent has an equitable partition with four parts. For infinitely many odd prime powers we construct a graph that is a plausible candidate for the second subconstituent. Unfortuantely we also show that the corresponding graph is strongly regular only when the prime power is 3, in which case the graph is already known.
The regular Turán number of a graph $F$, denoted by rex$(n,F)$, is the largest number of edges in a regular graph $G$ of order $n$ such that $G$ does not contain subgraphs isomorphic to $F$. Giving a partial answer to a recent problem raised by Gerbner et al. [arXiv:1909.04980] we prove that rex$(n,F)$ asymptotically equals the (classical) Turán number whenever the chromatic number of $F$ is at least four; but it is substantially different for some 3-chromatic graphs $F$ if $n$ is odd.
We answer two extremal questions about odd cycles that naturally arise in the study of sparse pseudorandom graphs. Let $Γ$ be an $(n,d,λ)$-graph, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all nontrivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$. Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov conjectured that, whenever $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, every subgraph $G$ of $Γ$ with $(1/2+o(1))e(Γ)$ edges contains an odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. Aigner-Horev, Hàn, and the third author proved a weaker statement by allowing an extra polylogarithmic factor in the assumption $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, but we completely remove it and hence …
We consider extremal problems for subgraphs of pseudorandom graphs. For graphs $F$ and $Γ$ the generalized Turán density $π_F(Γ)$ denotes the density of a maximum subgraph of $Γ$, which contains no copy of~$F$. Extending classical Turán type results for odd cycles, we show that $π_{F}(Γ)=1/2$ provided $F$ is an odd cycle and $Γ$ is a sufficiently pseudorandom graph. In particular, for $(n,d,λ)$-graphs $Γ$, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$, our result holds for odd cycles of length $\ell$, provided \[ λ^{\ell-2}\ll \frac{d^{\ell-1}}n…
For a graph $G$, the $k$-colour Ramsey number $R_k(G)$ is the least integer $N$ such that every $k$-colouring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $G$. Let $C_n$ denote the cycle on $n$ vertices. We show that for fixed $k\geq2$ and $n$ odd and sufficiently large, \[ R_k(C_n)=2^{k-1}(n-1)+1. \] This resolves a conjecture of Bondy and Erdős [J. Combin. Th. Ser. B \textbf{14} (1973), 46--54] for large $n$. The proof is analytic in nature, the first step of which is to use the regularity method to relate this problem in Ramsey theory to one in nonlinear optimis…
The classic Rock-Paper-Scissors game of size 3 and its extension, Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-Spock, are modeled by directed graphs called tournaments. They can be further extended to any odd size. The extended games are regular tournaments where each strategy beats and is beaten by exactly half of the alternatives. We survey the properties of regular tournaments, which we will call games. In the process we describe a number of constructions for such games. These include games on groups of odd order and the associated games on coset spaces. We obtain a new lower bound for the number of games of…
Let $G$ denote a $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graph with diameter $D$ at least 4. Assume that the intersection numbers of $G$ satisfy $a_i=0$ for $0 \leq i \leq D-1$ and $a_D\neq 0$. We show that $G$ is a polygon, a folded cube, or an Odd graph.
The paper characterizes $(2t+1)$-regular graphs with circular flow number $2 + \frac{2}{2t-1}$. For $t=1$ this is Tutte's characterization of cubic graphs with flow number 4. The class of cubic graphs is the only class of odd regular graphs where a flow number separates the class 1 graphs from the class 2 graphs. We finally state some conjectures and relate them to existing flow-conjectures.
It was conjectured by the third author in about 1973 that every $d$-regular planar graph (possibly with parallel edges) can be $d$-edge-coloured, provided that for every odd set $X$ of vertices, there are at least $d$ edges between $X$ and its complement. For $d = 3$ this is the four-colour theorem, and the conjecture has been proved for all $d\le 7$, by various authors. Here we prove it for $d = 8$.
Let $k\geq 3$ be an integer and $G$ be a very well-covered graph with ${\rm odd-girth}(G)\geq 2k+1$. Assume that $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$. We show that for every integer $s$ with $1\leq s\leq k-2$, we have ${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)=2s+ν(G)-1$, where $ν(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$.
The paper provides the first constructions of strongly regular graphs and association schemes from weakly regular plateaued functions over finite fields of odd characteristic. We generalize the construction method of strongly regular graphs from weakly regular bent functions given by Chee et al. in [Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 34(2), 251-266, 2011] to weakly regular plateaued functions. In this framework, we construct strongly regular graphs with three types of parameters from weakly regular plateaued functions with some homogeneous conditions. We also construct a family of association…
