In the setting of strict wonderful varieties we answer positively to Luna's conjecture, saying that wonderful varieties are classified by combinatorial objects, the so-called spherical systems. In particular, we prove that strict wonderful varieties are mostly obtained from symmetric spaces, spherical nilpotent orbits or model spaces. To make the paper self-contained as much as possible, we shall gather some known results on these families and more generally on wonderful varieties.
A geometrical realization of wonderful varieties by means of a suitable class of invariant Hilbert schemes is given. As a consequence, Luna's conjecture asserting that wonderful varieties are classified by spherical systems, triples of combinatorial invariants, is proved.
Let G be a semisimple connected linear algebraic group over C, and X a wonderful G-variety. We study the possibility of realizing X as a closed subvariety of the projective space of a simple G-module. We describe the wonderful varieties having this property as well as the linear systems giving rise to such immersions. We also prove that any ample line bundle on a wonderful variety is very ample.
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group, and X a wonderful G-variety. We determine the connected automorphism group of X and we calculate Luna's invariants of X under its action.
The invariant Hilbert schemes considered in \cite{BC1} were proved to be affine spaces. The proof relied on the classification of strict wonderful varieties. We obtain in the present article a classification-free proof of the affinity of these invariant Hilbert scheme by means of deformation theoretical arguments. As a consequence we recover in a shorter way the classification of strict wonderful varieties. This provides an alternative and new approach to answer Luna's conjecture.
We complete the classification of wonderful varieties initiated by D. Luna. We review the results that reduce the problem to the family of primitive varieties, and report the references where some of them have already been studied. Finally, we analyze the rest case-by-case.
We show that the proof of Luna's conjecture about the classification of general wonderful G-varieties can be reduced to the analysis of finitely many families of primitive cases. We work out all primitive cases arising with any classical group G.
We give an introduction to the theory of wonderful G-varieties, with many examples when G is simple of type F4. We present results and open problems about these varieties: on their classification, on their isotropy groups, on morphisms between them, and on their relations with the representation theory of G.
A general setting for a standard monomial theory on a multiset is introduced and applied to the Cox ring of a wonderful variety. This gives a degeneration result of the Cox ring to a multicone over a partial flag variety. Further, we deduce that the Cox ring has rational singularities.
This work is a PhD thesis. First we provide some general context on wonderful varieties and moduli spaces of rational curves. Working over complex numbers we prove that the moduli space of rational curves with no marked points on the wonderful compactification of a symmetric space is not irreducible in general. Lastly we show that in the case of wonderful group compactifications the set of rational curves with no marked points and irreducible source is irreducible.
We study the cone of effective divisors and the total coordinate ring of wonderful varieties, with applications to their automorphism group. We show that the total coordinate ring of any spherical variety is obtained from that of the associated wonderful variety by a base change of invariant subrings.
We study equivariant real structures on spherical varieties. We call such a structure canonical if it is equivariant with respect to the involution defining the split real form of the acting reductive group G. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a canonical structure for homogeneous spherical varieties G/H with H self-normalizing and for their wonderful embeddings. For a strict wonderful variety we give an estimate of the number of real form orbits on the set of real points.
We study torus-equivariant vector bundles $E$ on a complex projective variety $X$ which is either a Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety or a wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric variety of minimal rank. We show that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to every torus--invariant curve in $X$ is nef (respectively, ample). We also compute the Seshadri constants $\varepsilon(E,x)$, where $x\, \in\, X$ is any point fixed by the action of a maximal torus.
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a connected reductive complex algebraic group with split real form $(G,σ)$. Consider a strict wonderful $\mathbf{G}$-variety $\bf{X}$ equipped with its $σ$-equivariant real structure, and let $X$ be the corresponding real locus. Further, let $E$ be a real differentiable $G$-vector bundle over $X$. In this paper, we introduce a distribution character for the regular representation of $G$ on the space of smooth sections of $E$, and show that on a certain open subset of $G$ of transversal elements it is locally integrable and given by a sum over fixed points.
We describe the equivariant Chow ring of the wonderful compactification $X$ of a symmetric space of minimal rank, via restriction to the associated toric variety $Y$. Also, we show that the restrictions to $Y$ of the tangent bundle $T_X$ and its logarithmic analogue $S_X$ decompose into a direct sum of line bundles. This yields closed formulae for the equivariant Chern classes of $T_X$ and $S_X$, and, in turn, for the Chern classes of reductive groups considered by Kiritchenko.
Extending results of Wyser, we determine formulas for the equivariant cohomology classes of closed orbits of certain families of spherical subgroups of $GL_n$ on the flag variety $GL_n/B$. Putting this together with a slight extension of the results of Can-Joyce-Wyser, we arrive at a family of polynomial identities which show that certain explicit sums of Schubert polynomials factor as products of linear forms.
Let G be a semisimple complex algebraic group, and H a wonderful subgroup of G. We prove several results relating the subgroup H to the properties of a combinatorial invariant S of G/H, called its spherical system. It is also possible to consider a spherical system S as a datum defined by purely combinatorial axioms, and under certain circumstances our results prove the existence of a wonderful subgroup H associated to S. As a byproduct, we reduce for any group G the proof of the classification of wonderful G-varieties, known as the Luna conjecture, to its verification on a small family of cas…
Using the wonderful compactification of a semisimple adjoint affine algebraic group G defined over an algebraically closed field k of arbitrary characteristic, we construct a natural compactification Y of the G-character variety of any finitely generated group F. When F is a free group, we show that this compactification is always simply connected with respect to the étale fundamental group, and when k=C it is also topologically simply connected. For other groups F, we describe conditions for the compactification of the moduli space to be simply connected and give examples when these condition…
We prove that the multiplication of sections of globally generated line bundles on a model wonderful variety M of simply connected type is always surjective. This follows by a general argument which works for every wonderful variety and reduces the study of the surjectivity for every couple of globally generated line bundles to a finite number of cases. As a consequence, the cone defined by a complete linear system over M or over a closed G-stable subvariety of M is normal. We apply these results to the study of the normality of the compactifications of model varieties in simple projective spa…
With each antiholomorphic involution $σ$ of a connected complex semisimple Lie group $G$ we associate an automorphism $ε_σ$ of the Dynkin diagram. The definition of $ε_σ$ is given in terms of the Satake diagram of $σ$. Let $H \subset G$ be a self-normalizing spherical subgroup. If $ε_σ={\rm id}$ then we prove the uniqueness and existence of a $σ$-equivariant real structure on $G/H$ and on the wonderful completion of $G/H$.
Let $X$ be the wonderful compactification of a complex symmetric space $G/H$ of minimal rank. For a point $x\,\in\, G$, denote by $Z$ be the closure of $BxH/H$ in $X$, where $B$ is a Borel subgroup of $G$. The universal cover of $G$ is denoted by $\widetilde{G}$. Given a $\widetilde{G}$ equivariant vector bundle $E$ on $X,$ we prove that $E$ is nef (respectively, ample) if and only if its restriction to $Z$ is nef (respectively, ample). Similarly, $E$ is trivial if and only if its restriction to $Z$ is so.
We construct wonderful compactifications of the spaces of linear maps, and symmetric linear maps of a given rank as blow-ups of secant varieties of Segre and Veronese varieties. Furthermore, we investigate their birational geometry and their relations with some spaces of degree two stable maps.
We explore the relationship between two desingularization techniques for Schubert varieties. The Bott-Samelson resolution is the more common of the two, but it fails to encompass many properties that Hironaka resolutions provide, in particular, being an isomorphism over the smooth locus. Using a computer search, a list of cases where Bott-Samelson resolutions having this "strictness" property is compiled for the $n=5,6$ cases. A conjecture based on these results is formulated and is subsequently verified for $n=7,8$. A comparison between Bott-Samelson resolutions and blow-ups is also provided.
Let $f:\, X\to Y$ be a semistable non-isotrivial family of $n$-folds over a smooth projective curve with discriminant locus $S \subseteq Y$ and with general fibre $F$ of general type. We show the strict Arakelov inequality \[\frac{\mathrm{deg}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν}{\mathrm{rank}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν} < {nν\over 2}\cdot\mathrm{deg}\,Ω^1_Y(\log S),\] for all $ν\in \mathbb N$ such that the $ν$-th pluricanonical linear system $|ω^ν_F|$ is birational. This answers a question asked by Möller, Viehweg and the third named author.
We introduce and study several new topological operads that should be regarded as nonsymmetric analogues of the operads of little 2-disks, framed little 2-disks, and Deligne-Mumford compactifications of moduli spaces of genus zero curves with marked points. These operads exhibit all the remarkable algebraic and geometric features that their classical analogues possess; in particular, it is possible to define a noncommutative analogue of the notion of cohomological field theory with similar Givental-type symmetries. This relies on rich geometry of the analogues of the Deligne-Mumford spaces, co…
In this paper we discuss some questions about geometry over the field with one element, motivated by the properties of algebraic varieties that arise in perturbative quantum field theory. We follow the approach to F1-geometry based on torified schemes. We first discuss some simple necessary conditions in terms of Euler characteristic and classes in the Grothendieck ring, then we give a blowup formula for torified varieties and we show that the wonderful compactifications of the graph configuration spaces, that arise in the computation of Feynman integrals in position space, admit an F1-structu…
Let G be a simply connected semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and let V be a rational simple G-module of finite dimension. If G/H \subset P(V) is a spherical orbit and if X is its closure, then we describe the orbits of X and those of its normalization. If moreover the wonderful completion of G/H is strict, then we give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions so that the normalization morphism is a homeomorphism. Such conditions are trivially fulfilled if G is simply laced or if H is a symmetric subgroup.
Algebra bundles, in the strict sense, appear in many areas of geometry and physics. However, the structure of an algebra is flexible enough to vary non-trivially over a connected base, giving rise to a structure of a weak algebra bundle. We will show that the notion of a weak algebra bundle is more natural than that of a strict algebra bundle. We will give necessary and sufficient conditions for weak algebra bundles to be locally trivial. The collection of non-trivial associative algebras of a fixed dimension forms a projective variety, called associator varieties. We will show that these vari…
We study the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties $X= G/P\subset P(V)$, where $G$ is a complex simple Lie group, $P$ is a maximal parabolic subgroup and $V$ is the minimal $G$-module associated to $P$. Our study began with the observation that Freudenthal's magic chart could be derived from Zak's theorem on Severi varieties and standard geometric constructions. Our attempt to understand this observation led us to discover further connections between projective geometry and representation theory. Among other things, we calculate the variety of tangent directions to lines on $X$ through …
We study moduli spaces of O'Grady's ten-dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. These moduli spaces are covers of modular varieties of dimension 21, namely quotients of hermitian symmetric domains by a suitable arithmetic group. The interesting and new aspect of this case is that the group in question is strictly bigger than the stable orthogonal group. This makes it different from both the K3 and the K3^[n] case, which are of dimension 19 and 20 respectively.
In this paper, we study the K-stability of polarized spherical varieties. After reduction, it can be treated as a variational problem of the reduced functional of the Futaki invariant on the associated moment polytope. With the convexity constraint of the problem, the minimizers are shown to satisfy the homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation (HMA). When the spherical variety has rank two, a simpler characterization can be established through properties of the HMA. As an application, we determine the strict semistability and polystable degenerations for Fano spherical varieties of rank two.
To each subvariety $X$ in projective $n$-space of codimension $m$ we associate an integer sequence of length $m + 1$ from $1$ to the degree of $X$ recording the maximal cardinalities of finite, reduced intersections of $X$ with linear subvarieties. We call this the sequence of secant indices of $X$. Similar numbers have been studied independently with the aim of classifying subvarieties with extremal secant spaces. Our focus in this note is the study of the combinatorial properties that the secant indices satisfy collectively. We show these sequences are strictly increasing for nondegenerate s…
The classic trisecant lemma states that if $X$ is an integral curve of $\PP^3$ then the variety of trisecants has dimension one, unless the curve is planar and has degree at least 3, in which case the variety of trisecants has dimension 2. In this paper, our purpose is first to present another derivation of this result and then to introduce a generalization to non-equidimensional varities. For the sake of clarity, we shall reformulate our first problem as follows. Let $Z$ be an equidimensional variety (maybe singular and/or reducible) of dimension $n$, other than a linear space, embedded into …
The Bogomolov conjecture claims that a closed subvariety containing a dense subset of small points is a special kind of subvarieties. In the arithmetic setting over number fields, the Bogomolov conjecture for abelian varieties has already been established as a theorem of Ullmo and Zhang, but in the geometric setting over function field, it has not yet been solved completely. There are only some partial results known such as the totally degenerate case due to Gubler and our recent work generalizing Gubler's result. The key in establishing the previous results on the Bogomolov conjecture is the …
We associate to an analytic subvariety of a torus a tropical variety. In the first part, we generalize the results from tropical algebraic geometry to this non-archimedean analytic situation. The periodic case is applied to a totally degenerate abelian variety A. We obtain a dimensionality bound for the range of an algebraic morphism from a smooth variety Y to A in terms of the singularities of a strictly semistable model of Y. The main result is that Chambert-Loir's canonical measures on a closed subvariety of A induce piecewise Haar measures on the associated tropical variety and we give an …
