Let $X$ be an affine algebraic variety with a transitive action of the algebraic automorphism group. Suppose that $X$ is equipped with several non-degenerate fixed point free $SL_2$-actions satisfying some mild additional assumption. Then we show that the Lie algebra generated by completely integrable algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the set of all algebraic vector fields. In particular, we show that apart from a few exceptions this fact is true for any homogeneous space of form $G/R$ where $G$ is a linear algebraic group and $R$ is its proper reductive subgroup.
We introduce the notion of algebraic volume density property for affine algebraic manifolds and prove some important basic facts about it, in particular that it implies the volume density property. The main results of the paper are producing two big classes of examples of Stein manifolds with volume density property. One class consists of certain affine modifications of $\C^n$ equipped with a canonical volume form, the other is the class of all Linear Algebraic Groups equipped with the left invariant volume form.
Let $X$ be a connected affine homogenous space of a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\C$. (1) If $X$ is different from a line or a torus we show that the space of all algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by complete algebraic vector fields on $X$. (2) Suppose that $X$ has a $G$-invariant volume form $ω$. We prove that the space of all divergence-free (with respect to $ω$) algebraic vector fields on $X$ coincides with the Lie algebra generated by divergence-free complete algebraic vector fields on $X$ (including the cases when $X$ is a line or a torus). The pr…
We prove the existence of strongly tame sets in affine algebraic homogenenous spaces of linear algebraic Lie groups. We also show that $(\mathbb{C}^n,A)$ for a discrete tame set enjoy the relative density property, and we provide examples of Stein manifolds admitting non-equivalent tame sets.
In this paper we generalize the algebraic density property to not necessarily smooth affine varieties relative to some closed subvariety containing the singular locus. This property implies the remarkable approximation results for holomorphic automorphisms of the Andersén-Lempert theory. We show that an affine toric variety X satisfies this algebraic density property relative to a closed T-invariant subvariety Y if and only if X-Y is different from T. For toric surfaces we are able to classify those which posses a strong version of the algebraic density property (relative to the singular locus…
Given a connected algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field and a G-homogeneous space X, we describe the Chow ring of G and the rational Chow ring of X, with special attention to the Picard group. Also, we investigate the Albanese and the "anti-affine" fibrations of G and X.
We show the vanishing of the second homotopy group of the étale homotopy type of a smooth connected algebraic group over a separably closed field, completed away from the characteristic. This is an algebraic analogue of a classical theorem of Elie Cartan. Based on this result, we establish an explicit formula for the similarly completed second homotopy group of a homogeneous space.
The aim of this paper is to give another proof to a result on the image of a homogeneous quadratic map which is positive with respect to a homogeneous cone, given by Graczyk and Ishi in 2014. The new proof depends on a purely algebraic method, whereas the original depends on analytic arguments. This enables us to give explicit formulas of the basic relative invariants of homogeneous cones, obtained by the previous paper [J. Lie Theory 24 (2014), 1013--1032] without analytic arguments.
We present a modern proof of a theorem of Rosenlicht, asserting that every variety as in the title is isomorphic to a product of affine lines and punctured affine lines.
A Danilov-Gizatullin surface is an affine surface $V$ which is the complement of an ample section $S$ of a Hirzebruch surface. The remarkable theorem of Danilov and Gizatullin states that the isomorphism class of $V$ depends only on the self-intersection number $S^2$. In this paper we apply their theorem to present $V$ as the quotient of an affine threefold by a torus action, and to prove that the Lie algebra generated by the complete algebraic vector fields on $V$ coincides with the set of all algebraic vector fields.
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety such that the group $\text{Aut}(X)$ acts on $X$ transitively. We define the transitivity degree of $X$ as a maximal number $m$ such that the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ on $X$ is $m$-transitive. If the action of $\text{Aut}(X)$ is $m$-transitive for all $m$, the transitivity degree is infinite. We compute the transitivity degree for all quasi-affine toric varieties and for many homogeneous spaces of algebraic groups. Also we discuss a conjecture and open questions related to this invariant.
We associate to every divisorial (e.g. smooth) variety $X$ with only constant invertible global functions and finitely generated Picard group a $Pic(X)$-graded homogeneous coordinate ring. This generalizes the usual homogeneous coordinate ring of the projective space and constructions of Cox and Kajiwara for smooth and divisorial toric varieties. We show that the homogeneous coordinate ring defines in fact a fully faithful functor. For normal complex varieties $X$ with only constant global functions, we even obtain an equivalence of categories. Finally, the homogeneous coordinate ring of a loc…
The extended weight semigroup of a homogeneous space G/H of a connected semisimple algebraic group G characterizes the spectra of the representations of G on the spaces of regular sections of homogeneous linear bundles over G/H, including the space of regular functions on G/H. We compute the extended weight semigroups for all strictly irreducible affine spherical homogeneous spaces G/H, where G is a simply connected non-simple semisimple complex algebraic group and H a connected closed subgroup of it. In all the cases we also find the highest weight functions corresponding to the indecomposabl…
Using a reduction of the Galois cohomology of a linear algebraic group $G$ to that of a certain finite subquotient, we give different formulas allowing the calculation of the unramified algebraic Brauer group of a homogeneous space $V=G\backslash G'$ with $G'$ semisimple and simply connected, both over a finite field and over an arbitrary field of characteristic $0$.
Let G be a linear algebraic group over the field of real numbers R, and let Y be a right homogeneous space of G. We wish to find a real point of Y or to prove that Y has no real points. We describe a method to do that, implicitly using second nonabelian Galois cohomology. Our method is suitable for computer-assisted calculations.
We consider the analogue for regular maps from affine varieties to suitable algebraic manifolds of Oka theory for holomorphic maps from Stein spaces to suitable complex manifolds. The goal is to understand when the obstructions to approximation or interpolation are purely topological. We propose a definition of an algebraic Oka property, which is stronger than the analytic Oka property. We review the known examples of algebraic manifolds satisfying the algebraic Oka property and add a new class of examples: smooth nondegenerate toric varieties. On the other hand, we show that the algebraic ana…
In this article we prove a result comparing rationality of algebraic cycles over the function field of a projective homogeneous variety under a linear algebraic group of type $F_4$ or $E_8$ and over the base field, which can be of any characteristic.
A smooth affine algebraic variety $X$ equipped with an algebraic volume form $ω$ has the algebraic volume density property (AVDP) if the Lie algebra generated by completely integrable algebraic vector fields of $ω$-divergence zero coincides with the space of all algebraic vector fields of $ω$-divergence zero. We develop an effective criterion of verifying whether a given $X$ has AVDP. As an application of this method we establish AVDP for any homogeneous space $X=G/R$ that admits a $G$-invariant algebraic volume form where $G$ is a linear algebraic group and $R$ is a closed reductive subgroup …
The following corollary has been added: for general tetragonal curve $C$ of genus $g\ge 9$ the homogeneous coordinate ring of $C$ defined by the line bundle $K(-T)$, where $K$ is the canonical class, $T$ is the tetragonal series, is Koszul. Also some misprints are corrected.
In this paper we look at the notion of cohomological triviality of fibrations of homogeneous spaces of affine algebraic groups defined over $\mathbb{C}$ and use topological methods, primarily the theory of covering spaces. This is made possible because of the structure theory of affine algebraic groups. Further, we generalize our results for arbitrary connected algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces. As an application of our methods, we give a structure result for quasi-reductive algebraic groups(i.e groups whose unipotent radical is trivial), upto isogeny.
Let $q$ be a non-negative integer. We prove that a perfect field $K$ has cohomological dimension at most $q+1$ if, and only if, for any finite extension $L$ of $K$ and for any homogeneous space $Z$ under a smooth linear connected algebraic group over $L$, the $q$-th Milnor $K$-theory group of $L$ is spanned by the images of the norms coming from finite extensions of $L$ over which $Z$ has a rational point. We also prove a variant of this result for imperfect fields.
Hilbert's ternary quartic theorem states that every nonnegative degree 4 homogeneous polynomial in three variables can be written as a sum of three squares of homogeneous quadratic polynomials. We give a linear-algebraic approach to Hilbert's theorem by showing that a structured cone of positive semidefinite matrices is generated by rank 1 elements.
We prove that on separated algebraic surfaces every coherent sheaf is a quotient of a locally free sheaf. This class contains many schemes that are neither normal, reduced, quasiprojective or embeddable into toric varieties. Our methods extend to arbitrary $2$-dimensional schemes that are proper over a noetherian ring.
Let X be a compact (resp. compact and nonsingular) real algebraic variety and let Y be a homogeneous space for some linear real algebraic group. We prove that a continuous (resp. C^infinity) map f:X-->Y can be approximated by regular maps in the C^o (resp. C^infinity) topology if and only if it is homotopic to a regular map. Taking Y=S^p, the unit p-dimensional sphere, we obtain solutions of several problems that have been open since the 1980's and which concern approximation of maps with values in the unit spheres. This has several consequences for approximation of maps between unit spheres. …
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over a finite field $\bF_q$, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the number of rational points of $X$ over $\bF_{q^n}$ is a periodic polynomial function of $q^n$ with integer coefficients. Moreover, the shifted periodic polynomial function, where $q^n$ is formally replaced with $q^n + 1$, is shown to have non-negative coefficients.
We give a new proof of the theorem stating that for any connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 and for any closed connected subgroup H of G, the unramified Brauer group of G/H vanishes.
Let I be a conjugation-invariant ideal in the complex polynomial ring with variables z_1,...,z_n and their conjugates. The ideal I has the Quillen property if every real valued, strictly positive polynomial on the real zero set of I in C^n is a sum of hermitian squares modulo I. We first relate the Quillen property to the archimedean property from real algebra. Using hereditary calculus, we then quantize and show that the Quillen property implies the subnormality of commuting tuples of Hilbert space operators satisfying the identities in I. In the finite rank case we give a complete geometric …
Let $X$ be a homogeneous space of a connected linear algebraic group $G$ defined over the field of complex numbers $\mathbb C$. Let $x\in X({\mathbb C})$ be a point. We denote by $H$ the stabilizer of $x$ in $G$. When $H$ is connected, we compute the topological fundamental group $π_1^{\rm top}(X({\mathbb C}),x)$. Moreover, we compute the second homotopy group $π_2^{\rm top}(X({\mathbb C}),x)$.
Let $X$ be an affine algebraic variety endowed with an action of complexity one of an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$. It is well known that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations on the algebra of regular functions $\mathbb{K}[X]$ can be described in terms of proper polyhedral divisors corresponding to $\mathbb{T}$-variety $X$. We prove that homogeneous locally nilpotent derivations commute if an only if some combinatorial criterion holds. These results are used to describe actions of unipotent groups of dimension two on affine $\mathbb{T}$-varieties.
In this paper we discuss some special generalizations of equationally Noetherian property which naturally arise in the universal algebraic geometry. We introduce weakly equationally Noetherian, qw-compact, uw-compact, and weakly uw-compact algebras and then examine properties of such algebras. Also we consider the connections between five classes: the class of equationally Noetherian algebras, the class of weakly equationally Noetherian algebras, the class of uw-compact algebras, the class of weakly uw-compact algebras, and the class of qw-compact algebras.
In the present paper we investigate the question about the injectivity of the map F(R) --> F(K) induced by the canonical inclusion of a local regular ring of geometric type R to its field of fractions K for a homotopy invariant functor F with transfers satisfying some additional properties. As an application we get the original proof of Special Unitary Case of Grothendieck's conjecture about principal homogeneous spaces and some other interesting examples.
We show an analogue of Jordan's theorem for algebraic groups defined over a field $\mathbb k$ of arbitrary characteristic. As a consequence, a Jordan-type property holds for the automorphism group of any projective variety over $\mathbb k$.
We develop different formulas of algebraic and/or arithmetic nature allowing an explicit calculation, both over a finite field and over a field of characteristic 0, of the algebraic part of the unramified Brauer group of a homogeneous space G\G' under a semisiple simply connected linear group G' with finite stabilizer G. We also give examples of the calculations that can be done with these formulas.
Let $V$ be a complex algebraic variety, homogeneous under the action of a complex algebraic group. We show that the log Kodaira dimension of $V$ is non-negative if and only if $V$ is a semi-abelian variety.
Let $X$ be a complex analytic manifold, $D\subset X$ a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor, $E$ an integrable logarithmic connection with respect to $D$ and $L$ the local system of the horizontal sections of $E$ on $X-D$. In this paper we give an algebraic description in terms of $E$ of the regular holonomic D-module whose de Rham complex is the intersection complex associated with $L$. As an application, we perform some effective computations in the case of quasi-homogeneous plane curves.
Let G be a connected reductive group. Recall that a G-variety X is called spherical if X is normal and a Borel subgroup of G has an open orbit on X. To a spherical homogeneous G-space one assigns certain combinatorial invariants: the weight lattice, the valuation cone and the set of B-stable prime divisors. We prove that two spherical homogeneous spaces with the same combinatorial invariants are equivariantly isomorphic. Further, we show how to recover the group of G-equivariant automorphisms from these invariants.
In this paper, we study obstructions to the Dirichlet property by two approaches: density of non-positive points and functionals on adelic R-divisors. Applied to the algebraic dynamical systems, these results provide examples of nef adelic arithmetic R-Cartier divisor which does not have the Dirichlet property. We hope the obstructions obtained in the article will give ways toward criteria of the Dirichlet property.
In this paper we prove the following result: if two 2-dimensional 2-homogeneous rational vector fields commute, then either both vector fields can be explicitly integrated to produce rational flows with orbits being lines through the origin, or both flows can be explicitly integrated in terms of algebraic functions. In the latter case, orbits of each flow are given in terms of $1$-homogeneous rational functions $W$ as curves $W(x,y)=\textrm{const}$. An exhaustive method to construct such commuting algebraic flows is presented. The degree of the so-obtained algebraic functions in two variables …
Consider a smooth connected algebraic group $G$ acting on a normal projective variety $X$ with an open dense orbit. We show that Aut($X$) is a linear algebraic group if so is $G$; for an arbitrary $G$, the group of components of Aut($X$) is arithmetic. Along the way, we obtain a restrictive condition for $G$ to be the full automorphism group of some normal projective variety.
We lay down an elementary yet fundamental lemma concerning a finite algebraicness property of a smooth map from an Azumaya/matrix manifold with a fundamental module to a smooth manifold. This gives us a starting point to build a synthetic (synonymously, $C^{\infty}$-algebraic) symplectic geometry and calibrated geometry that are both tailored to and guided by D-brane phenomena in string theory and along the line of our previous works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]).
Let G be a semisimple affine algebraic group over a field F. Assuming that G becomes of inner type over some finite field extension of F of degree a power of a prime p, we investigate the structure of the Chow motives with coefficients in a finite field of characteristic p of the projective G-homogeneous varieties. The complete motivic decomposition of any such variety contains one specific summand, which is the most understandable among the others and which we call the upper indecomposable summand of the variety. We show that every indecomposable motivic summand of any projective G-homogeneou…
A century ago, Camille Jordan proved that the complex general linear group $GL_n(C)$ has the Jordan property: there is a Jordan constant $C_n$ such that every finite subgroup $H \le GL_n(C)$ has an abelian subgroup $H_1$ of index $[H : H_1] \le C_n$. We show that every connected algebraic group $G$ (which is not necessarily linear) has the Jordan property with the Jordan constant depending only on $\dim \, G$, and that the full automorphism group $Aut(X)$ of every projective variety $X$ has the Jordan property
We factor the virtual Poincare polynomial of every homogeneous space G/H, where G is a complex connected linear algebraic group and H is an algebraic subgroup, as $t^{2u} (t^2-1)^r Q_{G/H}(t^2)$ for a polynomial $Q_{G/H}$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Moreover, we show that $Q_{G/H}(t^2)$ divides the virtual Poincaré polynomial of every regular embedding of G/H, if H is connected.
The complexity of an action of a reductive algebraic group G on an algebraic variety X is the codimension of a generic B-orbit in X, where B is a Borel subgroup of G. We classify affine homogeneous spaces G/H of complexity one. These results are the natural continuation of the classification of spherical affine homogeneous spaces, i.e., spaces of complexity zero.
In the present paper we provide a general algorithm to compute multiplicative cohomological operations on algebraic oriented cohomology of projective homogeneous G-varieties, where G is a split reductive algebraic group over a field of characteristic 0. More precisely, we extend such operations to the respective T-equivariant (T is a maximal split torus of G) oriented theories, and then compute them using equivariant Schubert calculus techniques. This generalizes an approach suggested by Garibaldi-Petrov-Semenov for Steenrod operations. We also show that operations on the theories of additive …
By studying the theory of rational curves, we introduce a notion of rational simple connectedness for projective homogeneous spaces. As an application, we prove that over a function field of an algebraic surface, a projective homogeneous space admits a rational point if the elementary obstruction vanishes.
Quasi-homogeneous surfaces, or Gizatullin surfaces, are normal affine surfaces such that there exists an open orbit of the automorphism group with a finite complement. If the action of the automorphism group is transitive, the surface is called homogeneous. Examples of non-homogeneous Gizatullin surfaces were constructed in [Ko], but on more restricted conditions. We show that a similar result holds under less constrained assumptions. Moreover, we exhibit examples of smooth affine surfaces with a non-transitive action of the automorphism group whereas the automorphism group is huge. This means…
