The crossover behavior of various models exhibiting phase transition to absorbing phase with parity conserving class has been investigated by numerical simulations and cluster mean-field method. In case of models exhibiting Z_2 symmetric absorbing phases (the NEKIMCA and Grassberger's A stochastic cellular automaton) the introduction of an external symmetry breaking field causes a crossover to kink parity conserving models characterized by dynamical scaling of the directed percolation (DP) and the crossover exponent: 1/ϕ~ 0.53(2). In case an even offspringed branching and annihilating random walk model (dual to NEKIMCA) the introduction of spontaneous particle decay destroys the parity conservation and results in a crossover to the DP class characterized by the crossover exponent: 1/ϕ\simeq 0.205(5). The two different kinds of crossover operators can't be mapped onto each other and the resulting models show a diversity within the DP universality class in one dimension. These 'sub-classes' differ in cluster scaling exponents.
We investigate the crossover properties of the frustrated percolation model on a two-dimensional square lattice, with asymmetric distribution of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. We determine the critical exponents nu, gamma and beta of the percolation transition of the model, for various values of the density of antiferromagnetic interactions pi in the range 0<pi<0.5. Our data are consistent with the existence of a crossover from random percolation behavior for pi=0, to frustrated percolation behavior, characterized by the critical exponents of the ferromagnetic 1/2-state Pott…
Compact directed percolation is known to appear at the endpoint of the directed percolation critical line of the Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton in 1+1 dimension. Equivalently, such transition occurs at zero temperature in a magnetic field H, upon changing the sign of H, in the one-dimensional Glauber-Ising model with well known exponents characterising spin-cluster growth. We have investigated here numerically these exponents in the non-equilibrium generalization (NEKIM) of the Glauber model in the vicinity of the parity-conserving phase transition point of the kinks. Critical fluctuations o…
Hierarchical lattices that constitute spatially anisotropic systems are introduced. These lattices provide exact solutions for hierarchical models and, simultaneously, approximate solutions for uniaxially or fully anisotropic d=3 physical models. The global phase diagrams, with d=2 and d=1 to d=3 crossovers, are obtained for Ising, XY magnetic models and percolation systems, including crossovers from algebraic order to true long-range order.
Recently Dantas, Oliveira and Stilck [J. Stat. Mech. (2007) P08009] studied how the one-dimensional diffusive contact process crosses over from the critical behavior of directed percolation to an effective mean field behaviour when the diffusion rate is sent to infinity. They showed that this crossover can be described in terms of a crossover exponent $ϕ$, finding the boundaries 3 <= $ϕ$ <= 4 in one spatial dimension. In the present work we refine and extend this result up to four spatial dimensions by a field-theoretic calculation and extensive numerical simulations.
Crossover behaviors from the pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) and the driven PCPD (DPCPD) to the directed percolation (DP) are studied in one dimension by introducing a single particle annihilation/branching dynamics. The crossover exponents $ϕ$ are estimated numerically as $1/ϕ\simeq 0.58\pm0.03$ for the PCPD and $1/ϕ\simeq 0.49 \pm 0.02$ for the DPCPD. Nontriviality of the PCPD crossover exponent strongly supports non-DP nature of the PCPD critical scaling, which is further evidenced by the anomalous critical amplitude scaling near the PCPD point. In addition, we find that the DPCP…
We consider the statistical properties of arrival times and balls on first-passage percolation (FPP) $2D$ square lattices with strong disorder in the link-times. A previous work showed a crossover in the weak disorder regime, between Gaussian and Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality, with the crossover length decreasing as the noise amplitude grows. On the other hand, this work presents a very different behavior in the strong-disorder regime. A new crossover length appears below which the model is described by bond-percolation universality class. This characteristic length scale grows with t…
The pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) with modulo 2 conservation (\pcpdt) [$2A\to 4A$, $2A\to 0$] is studied in one dimension, focused on the crossover to other well established universality classes: the directed Ising (DI) and the directed percolation (DP). First, we show that the \pcpdt shares the critical behaviors with the PCPD, both with and without directional bias. Second, the crossover from the \pcpdt to the DI is studied by including a parity-conserving single-particle process ($A \to 3A$). We find the crossover exponent $1/ϕ_1 = 0.57(3)$, which is argued to be identical to t…
A random growth lattice filling model of percolation with touch and stop growth rule is developed and studied numerically on a two dimensional square lattice. Nucleation centers are continuously added one at a time to the empty sites and the clusters are grown from these nucleation centers with a tunable growth probability g. As the growth probability g is varied from 0 to 1 two distinct regimes are found to occur. For g\le 0.5, the model exhibits continuous percolation transitions as ordinary percolation whereas for g\ge 0.8 the model exhibits discontinuous percolation transitions. The discon…
We study the contact process on spatially embedded networks, consisting of a regular square lattice with long-range connections. To generate the networks, a long-range connection is randomly added to each node $i$ of a square lattice, following the probability, $P_{ij}\sim{r_{ij}^{-α}}$ , where $r_{ij}$ is the Manhattan distance between nodes $i$ and $j$, and the exponent $α$ is a tunable parameter. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis for different values of $α$ reveal a crossover from the mean-field to $2d$ Directed Percolation universality class with increasi…
By employing the methods of renormalized field theory we show that the percolation behavior of random resistor-diode networks near the multicritical line belongs to the universality class of isotropic percolation. We construct a mesoscopic model from the general epidemic process by including a relevant isotropy-breaking perturbation. We present a two-loop calculation of the crossover exponent $ϕ$. Upon blending the $ε$-expansion result with the exact value $ϕ=1$ for one dimension by a rational approximation, we obtain for two dimensions $ϕ= 1.29\pm 0.05$. This value is in agreement with the re…
When conducting bonds are occupied randomly in a two-dimensional square lattice, the conductivity of the system increases continuously as the density of those conducting bonds exceeds the percolation threshold. Such a behavior is well known in percolation theory; however, the conductivity behavior has not been studied yet when the percolation transition is discontinuous. Here we investigate the conductivity behavior through a discontinuous percolation model evolving under a suppressive external bias. Using effective medium theory, we analytically calculate the conductivity behavior as a functi…
We numerically study the Loewner driving function U_t of a site percolation cluster boundary on the triangular lattice for p<p_c. It is found that U_t shows a drifted random walk with a finite crossover time. Within this crossover time, the averaged driving function < U_t> shows a scaling behavior -(p_c-p) t^{(ν+1)/2ν} with a superdiffusive fluctuation whereas, beyond the crossover time, the driving function U_t undergoes a normal diffusion with Hurst exponent 1/2 but with the drift velocity proportional to (p_c-p)^ν, where ν= 4/3 is the critical exponent for two-dimensional percolation correl…
The dynamical properties of the invasion percolation on the square lattice are investigated with emphasis on the geometrical properties on the growing cluster of infected sites. The exterior frontier of this cluster forms a critical loop ensemble (CLE), whose length $(l)$, the radius $(r)$ and also roughness $(w)$ fulfill the finite size scaling hypothesis. The dynamical fractal dimension of the CLE defined as the exponent of the scaling relation between $l$ and $r$ is estimated to be $D_f=1.81\pm0.02$. By studying the autocorrelation functions of these quantities we show importantly that ther…
We investigate the influence of the range of interactions in the two-dimensional bond percolation model, by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We locate the phase transitions for several interaction ranges, as expressed by the number $z$ of equivalent neighbors. We also consider the $z \to \infty$ limit, i.e., the complete graph case, where percolation bonds are allowed between each pair of sites, and the model becomes mean-field-like. All investigated models with finite $z$ are found to belong to the short-range universality class. There is no evidence of a tricritical point separating the sho…
At non-equilibrium phase transitions into absorbing (trapped) states, it is well known that the directed percolation (DP) critical scaling is shared by two classes of models with a single (S) absorbing state and with infinitely many (IM) absorbing states. We study the crossover behavior in one dimension, arising from a considerable reduction of the number of absorbing states (typically from the IM-type to the S-type DP models), by following two different (excitatory or inhibitory) routes which make the auxiliary field density abruptly jump at the crossover. Along the excitatory route, the syst…
We consider numerically the crossover scaling behavior from the directed percolation universality class to the compact directed percolation universality class within the one-dimensional Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton. Our results are compared to those of a recently performed field theoretical approach. In particular, the value of the crossover exponent phi=2 is confirmed.
We study loop erased random walk (LERW) on the percolation cluster, with occupation probability $p\geq p_c$, in two and three dimensions. We find that the fractal dimensions of LERW$_p$ is close to normal LERW in Euclidean lattice, for all $p>p_c$. However our results reveal that LERW on critical incipient percolation clusters is fractal with $d_{f}=1.217\pm0.0015$ for d = 2 and $1.44\pm0.03$ for d = 3, independent of the coordination number of the lattice. These values are consistent with the known values for optimal path exponents in strongly disordered media. We investigate how the behavior…
For binary fluid mixtures of spherical particles in which the two species are sufficiently different in size, the dominant wavelength of oscillations of the pair correlation functions is predicted to change from roughly the diameter of the large species to that of the small species along a sharp crossover line in the phase diagram [C. Grodon, M. Dijkstra, R. Evans & R. Roth, J.Chem.Phys. 121, 7869 (2004)]. Using particle-resolved colloid experiments in 3d we demonstrate that crossover exists and that its location in the phase diagram is in quantitative agreement with the results of both theory…
We report on a possible crossover of a non universal quantity at the upper critical dimensionality in the field of percolation. Plotting recent estimates for site percolation thresholds of hypercubes in dimension 6< d< 13 against corresponding predictions from the GM formula p_c=p_0 [ (d-1)(q-1) ]^{-a} d^b for percolation thresholds, a significant departure of p_c is observed for d> 6. This result is reminiscent of the crossover undergone by universal quantities in critical phenomena. For bond percolation, the evidence of such a crossover of dimensionality would require an improvement of the G…
Spin-crossover compounds, which are characterized by magnetic ions showing low-spin and high-spin states at thermally accessible energies, are ubiquitous in nature. We here focus on the effect of an exchange interaction on the collective properties for the case of non-magnetic low-spin ions, which applies to Fe(II) compounds. Monte Carlo simulations are used to study a three-dimensional spin-crossover model for the full parameter range from essentially pure high spin to essentially pure low spin. We find that as the low-spin state becomes more favorable, the Curie temperature drops, the univer…
Scaling nature of absorbing critical phenomena is well understood for the directed percolation (DP) and the directed Ising (DI) systems. However, a full analysis of the crossover behavior is still lacking, which is of our interest in this study. There are three different routes from the DI to the DP classes by introducing a symmetry breaking field (SB), breaking a modulo 2 conservation (CB), or making channels connecting two equivalent absorbing states (CC). Each route can be characterized by a crossover exponent, which is found numerically as $ϕ=2.1\pm 0.1$ (SB), $4.6\pm 0.2$ (CB), and $2.9\p…
We provide finite-size scaling estimates for the dynamical critical exponent of the even parity-conserving universality class of critical behavior through exact numerical diagonalizations of the time evolution operator of an even-parity-conserving contact process. Our data seem to indicate that upon the introduction of a small diffusion rate in the process its critical behavior crosses over to that of the directed percolation universality class. A brief discussion of the many-sector decomposability of parity-conserving contact processes is presented.
A generalization of the Renormalization Group, which describes order-parameter fluctuations in finite systems, is developed in the specific context of percolation. This ``Stochastic Renormalization Group'' (SRG) expresses statistical self-similarity through a non-stationary branching process. The SRG provides a theoretical basis for analytical or numerical approximations, both at and away from criticality, whenever the correlation length is much larger than the lattice spacing (regardless of the system size). For example, the SRG predicts order-parameter distributions and finite-size scaling f…
We generalize the directed percolation (DP) model by relaxing the strict directionality of DP such that propagation can occur in either direction but with anisotropic probabilities. We denote the probabilities as $p_{\downarrow}= p \cdot p_d$ and $p_{\uparrow}=p \cdot (1-p_d)$, with $p $ representing the average occupation probability and $p_d$ controlling the anisotropy. The Leath-Alexandrowicz method is used to grow a cluster from an active seed site. We call this model with two main growth directions {\em biased directed percolation} (BDP). Standard isotropic percolation (IP) and DP are the…
In this article, we illustrate how the qualitative phase diagram of a gauge theory coupled to matter can be directly proved and how rigorous numerical bounds may be established. Our work reaffirms the seminal result of Fradkin and Shenker from another vista. Our main ingredient is the combined use of the self-duality of the three dimensional Z2/Z2 theory and an extended Lee-Yang theorem. We comment on extensions of these ideas and firmly establish the existence of a sharp crossover line in the two dimensional Z2/Z2 theory.
In a recent work, Dantas and Stilck studied a model that generalizes the contact process model with diffusion. Our approach, based on the supercritical expansion, showed that for a weak diffusion regime the crossover exponent between the directed percolation and compact directed percolation universality classes was $ϕ\approx 2$. However this approach did not work for reduced diffusion rates higher than $D\approx 0.3$, where $0\leq D\leq 1$ and D=1 corresponds to an infinite diffusion rate. Thus, in the present work we estimate this crossover exponent for higher diffusion rates using a numerica…
We consider a generalization of the contact process stochastic model, including an additional autocatalitic process. The phase diagram of this model in the proper two-parameter space displays a line of transitions between an active and an absorbing phase which starts at the critical point of the contact process and ends at the transition point of the voter model. Thus, a crossover between the directed percolation and the compact percolation universality classes is observed at this latter point. We study this crossover by a variety of techniques. Using supercritical series expansions analyzed w…
We study the phase diagram of fully directed lattice animals with nearest-neighbour interactions on the square lattice. This model comprises several interesting ensembles (directed site and bond trees, bond animals, strongly embeddable animals) as special cases and its collapse transition is equivalent to a directed bond percolation threshold. Precise estimates for the animal size exponents in the different phases and for the critical fugacities of these special ensembles are obtained from a phenomenological renormalization group analysis of the correlation lengths for strips of width up to n=…
We introduce and investigate a simple model to describe recent experiments by Douady and Daerr on flowing sand. The model reproduces experimentally observed compact avalanches, whose opening angle decreases linearly as a threshold is approached. On large scales the model exhibits a crossover from compact directed percolation to directed percolation; we predict similar behavior for the experimental system. We estimate the regime where "true" directed percolation morphology and exponents will be observed, providing the first experimental realization for this class of models.
It is shown that the universal critical properties of two recently introduced coupled directed percolation processes can be described by a single rapidity reversal invariant stochastic reaction-diffusion model. It is demonstrated that all renormalizations needed for the calculation of the universal scaling behavior near the multicritical point can be gained from the Gribov process (Reggeon field theory). Consequently the crossover exponent describing the scaling of the linear coupling parameter is given by Phi = 1 to all orders of the perturbation expansion.

In this work we use the technique of the partial differential approximants to determine, from a pertubative supercritical series expansion for the ulimate survival probability, the critical line of the contact process model in one dimension with diffusion and estimate the value of the crossover exponent that characterizes the change of the critical behavior from the 1d directed percolation universality class to the mean-field directed percolation universality class. This crossover occurs in the limit of infinite diffusion rate.
We present some exact results on the behavior of Branching and Annihilating Random Walks, both in the Directed Percolation and Parity Conserving universality classes. Contrary to usual perturbation theory, we perform an expansion in the branching rate around the non trivial Pure Annihilation model, whose correlation and response function we compute exactly. With this, the non-universal threshold value for having a phase transition in the simplest system belonging to the Directed Percolation universality class is found to coincide with previous Non Perturbative Renormalization Group approximate…
Consider $N$ points randomly distributed along a line segment of unitary length. A walker explores this disordered medium moving according to a partially self-avoiding deterministic walk. The walker, with memory $μ$, leaves from the leftmost point and moves, at each discrete time step, to the nearest point which has not been visited in the preceding $μ$ steps. Using open boundary conditions, we have calculated analytically the probability $P_N(μ) = (1 - 2^{-μ})^{N - μ- 1}$ that all $N$ points are visited, with $N \gg μ\gg 1$. This approximated expression for $P_N(μ)$ is reasonable even for sma…
A simple model for flowing sand on an inclined plane is introduced. The model is related to recent experiments by Douady and Daerr [Nature 399, 241 (1999)] and reproduces some of the experimentally observed features. Avalanches of intermediate size appear to be compact, placing the critical behavior of the model into the universality class of compact directed percolation. On very large scales, however, the avalanches break up into several branches leading to a crossover from compact to ordinary directed percolation. Thus, systems of flowing granular matter on an inclined plane could serve as a…
A monomer-dimer reaction lattice model with lateral repulsion among the same species is studied using a mean-field analysis and Monte Carlo simulations. For weak repulsions, the model exhibits a first-order irreversible phase transition between two absorbing states saturated by each different species. Increasing the repulsion, a reactive stationary state appears in addition to the saturated states. The irreversible phase transitions from the reactive phase to any of the saturated states are continuous and belong to the directed percolation universality class. However, a different critical beha…
It is well know that systems with an interaction decaying as a power of the distance may have critical exponents that are different from those of short-range systems. The boundary between long-range and short-range is known, however the behavior in the crossover region is not well understood. In this paper we propose a general form for the crossover function and we compute it in a particular limit. We compare our predictions with the results of numerical simulations for two-dimensional long-range percolation.
We study a model that generalizes the CP with diffusion. An additional transition is included in the model so that at a particular point of its phase diagram a crossover from the directed percolation to the compact directed percolation class will happen. We are particularly interested in the effect of diffusion on the properties of the crossover between the universality classes. To address this point, we develop a supercritical series expansion for the ultimate survival probability and analyse this series using d-log Padé and partial differential approximants. We also obtain approximate soluti…
A model of directed percolation processes with colors and flavors that is equivalent to a population model with many species near their extinction thresholds is presented. We use renormalized field theory and demonstrate that all renormalizations needed for the calculation of the universal scaling behavior near the multicritical point can be gained from the one-species Gribov process (Reggeon field theory). In addition this universal model shows an instability that generically leads to a total asymmetry between each pair of species of a cooperative society, and finally to unidirectionality of …
Unified theory for the scaling of the crossover between strong and weak disorder behaviors of optimal paths and directed/undirected polymers in disordered media
We introduce a stochastic sandpile model where finite drive and dissipation are coupled to the activity field. The absorbing phase transition here, as expected, belongs to the directed percolation (DP) universality class. We focus on the small drive and dissipation limit, i.e. the so-called self-organised critical (SOC) regime and show that the system exhibits a crossover from ordinary DP scaling to a dissipation-controlled scaling which is independent of the underlying dynamics or spatial dimension. The new scaling regime continues all the way to the zero bulk drive limit suggesting that the …
The probabilities of clusters spanning a hypercube of dimensions two to seven along one axis of a percolation system under criticality were investigated numerically. We used a modified Hoshen--Kopelman algorithm combined with Grassberger's "go with the winner" strategy for the site percolation. We carried out a finite-size analysis of the data and found that the probabilities confirm Aizenman's proposal of the multiplicity exponent for dimensions three to five. A crossover to the mean-field behavior around the upper critical dimension is also discussed.
We carried out a finite-size scaling analysis of the restricted solid-on-solid version of a recently introduced growth model that exhibits a roughening transition accompanied by spontaneous symmetry breaking. The dynamic critical exponent of the model was calculated and found to be consistent with the universality class of the directed percolation process in a symmetry-broken phase with a crossover to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang behavior in a rough phase. The order parameter of the roughening transition together with the string order parameter was calculated, and we found that the flat, gapped phase i…

Directed spiral percolation (DSP) is a new percolation model with crossed external bias fields. Since percolation is a model of disorder, the effect of external bias fields on the properties of disordered systems can be studied numerically using DSP. In DSP, the bias fields are an in-plane directional field ($E$) and a field of rotational nature ($B$) applied perpendicular to the plane of the lattice. The critical properties of DSP clusters are studied here varying the direction of $E$ field and intensities of both $E$ and $B$ fields in 2 dimensions. The system shows interesting and unusual cr…
We introduce a new class of two-dimensional cellular automata with a bootstrap percolation-like dynamics. Each site can be either empty or occupied by a single particle and the dynamics follows a deterministic updating rule at discrete times which allows only emptying sites. We prove that the threshold density $ρ_c$ for convergence to a completely empty configuration is non trivial, $0<ρ_c<1$, contrary to standard bootstrap percolation. Furthermore we prove that in the subcritical regime, $ρ<ρ_c$, emptying always occurs exponentially fast and that $ρ_c$ coincides with the critical density for …
We investigate the critical properties of a one dimensional stochastic lattice model with n (permutation symmetric) absorbing states. We analyze the cases with $n \leq 4$ by means of the non-hermitian density matrix renormalization group. For n=1 and n=2 we find that the model is respectively in the directed percolation and parity conserving universality class, consistent with previous studies. For n=3 and n=4, the model is in the active phase in the whole parameter space and the critical point is shifted to the limit of one infinite reaction rate. We show that in this limit the dynamics of th…
We compute the crossover exponents of all quadratic and cubic deformations of critical field theories with permutation symmetry $S_q$ in $d=6-ε$ (Landau-Potts field theories) and $d=4-ε$ (hypertetrahedral models) up to three loops. We use our results to determine the $ε$-expansion of the fractal dimension of critical clusters in the most interesting cases, which include spanning trees and forests ($q\to0$), and bond percolations ($q\to1$). We also explicitly verify several expected degeneracies in the spectrum of relevant operators for natural values of $q$ upon analytic continuation, which are…
We study a probabilistic cellular automaton to describe two population biology problems: the threshold of species coexistence in a predator-prey system and the spreading of an epidemic in a population. By carrying out time-dependent simulations we obtain the dynamic critical exponents and the phase boundaries (thresholds) related to the transition between an activestate, where prey and predators present a stable coexistence, and a prey absorbing state. The estimates for the critical exponents show that the transition belongs to the directed percolation universality class. In the limit where th…
