Every indefinite binary form occurs as the Picard lattice of some K3-surface. The group of its isometries, or automorphs, coincides with the automorphism group of the K3-surface, but only up to finite groups. The classical theory of automorphs for binary forms can then be applied to study these automorphism groups. The result is a precise description of all possible automorphism groups of ``general'' K3's with Picard number two.
We prove that the automorphism group of an odd dimensional Calabi-Yau manifold of Picard number two is always a finite group. This makes a sharp contrast to the automorphism groups of K3 surfaces and hyperkähler manifolds and birational automorphism groups, as we shall see. We also clarify the relation between finiteness of the automorphism group (resp. birational automorphism group) and the rationality of the nef cone (resp. movable cone) for a hyperkähler manifold of Picard number two. We will also discuss a similar conjectual relation together with exsistence of rational curve, expected by …
We prove that the automorphism group of a Calabi-Yau threefold with Picard number three is either finite, or isomorphic to the infinite cyclic group up to finite kernel and cokernel.
In this article, we prove that any complex smooth rational surface $X$ which has no automorphism of positive entropy has a finite number of real forms (this is especially the case if $X$ cannot be obtained by blowing up $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ at $r\geq 10$ points). In particular, we prove that the group $\mathrm{Aut}^{\#}X$ of complex automorphisms of $X$ which act trivially on the Picard group of $X$ is a linear algebraic group defined over $\mathbb R$.
If an automorphism of a projective K3 surface with Picard number 2 is of infinite order, then the automorphism corresponds to a solution of Pell equation. In this paper, by solving this equation, we determine all Salem polynomials of symplectic and anti-symplectic automorphisms of projective K3 surfaces with Picard number 2.
This paper aims at generalizing some geometric properties of Grassmannians of finite dimensional vector spaces to the case of Grassmannnians of infinite dimensional ones, in particular for that of $k((z))$. It is shown that the Determinant Line Bundle generates its Picard Group and that the Plücker equations define it as closed subscheme of a infinite projective space. Finally, a characterization of finite dimensional projective spaces in Grassmannians allows us to offer an approach to the study of the automorphism group.
It is known that an automorphism group of a K3 surface with Picard number two is either infinite cyclic group or infinite dihedral group if it is infinite. In this paper, we study the generators of an automorphism group. We use the eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius of an automorphism of infinite order to determine the generators. We also determine whether an automorphism group is the infinite cyclic group or the infinite dihedral group with several examples.
We give a complete description of the group of exact autoequivalences of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a K3 surface of Picard rank 1. We do this by proving that a distinguished connected component of the space of stability conditions is preserved by all autoequivalences, and is contractible.
Following a recent work of Oguiso, we calculate explicitly the groups of automorphisms and birational automorphisms on a Calabi-Yau manifold with Picard number two. When the group of birational automorphisms is infinite, we prove that the Cone conjecture of Morrison and Kawamata holds.
We consider the symplectic action of a finite group G on a K3 surface. The Picard group of the K3 surface has a primitive sublattice determined by G. We show how to compute the rank and discriminant of this sublattice. We then describe moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with symplectic G-action, extending results of Nikulin in the abelian case. We use our moduli spaces to develop techniques for classifying all possible symplectic actions of a group G.
Let $X$ be an $n$-dimensional smooth Fano complex variety of Picard number one. Assume that the VMRT at a general point of $X$ is smooth irreducible and non-degenerate (which holds if $X$ is covered by lines with index $ >(n+2)/2$). It is proven that $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) > n(n+1)/2$ if and only if $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^n, \mathbb{Q}^n$ or ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$. Furthermore, the equality $\dim \mathfrak{aut}(X) = n(n+1)/2$ holds only when $X$ is isomorphic to the 6-dimensional Lagrangian Grassmannian ${\rm Lag}(6)$ or a general hyperplane section of ${\rm Gr}(2,5)$.
Var3: In our papers 2013--2018 we classified degenerations and Picard lattices of Kahlerian K3 surfaces with finite symplectic automorphism groups of high order. For remaining groups of small order: $D_6$, $C_4$, $(C_2)^2$, $C_3$, $C_2$ and $C_1$ it was not completely considered. Cases of $D_6$ and $C_4$ were recently completely considered in [19] and [20]. Here we consider the analogous complete classification for the group $(C_2)^2$ of the order 4.
We show that for any smooth Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ of Picard number $2$ with infinite birational automorphism group, the numerical dimension $κ_σ$ of the extremal rays of the movable cone of $X$ is $\frac{3}{2}$. Furthermore, we provide new examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard number $2$ with infinite birational automorphism group.
Using results of our papers [19], [20] and [21] about classification of degenerations of Kahlerian K3 surfaces with finite symplectic automorphism groups, we classify Picard lattices of Kahlerian K3 surfaces. By classification we understand classification depending on their possible finite symplectic automorphism groups and their non-singular rational curves if a Picard lattice is negative definite.
We describe smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. Moreover we prove that the automorphism group of any such variety acts with at most two orbits and we give a geometric characterisation of non-homogeneous ones.
We slightly extend a result of Oguiso on birational or automorphism groups (resp. of Lazić - Peternell on Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture) from Calabi-Yau manifolds of Picard number two to arbitrary singular varieties X (resp. to klt Calabi-Yau pairs in broad sense) of Picard number two. When X has only klt singularities and is not a complex torus, we show that either Aut(X) is almost cyclic, or it has only finitely many connected components.
We consider a normal complete rational variety with a torus action of complexity one. In the main results, we determine the roots of the automorphism group and give an explicit description of the root system of its semisimple part. The results are applied to the study of almost homogeneous varieties. For example, we describe all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) del Pezzo k*-surfaces of Picard number one and all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus.
We construct examples of hyperKahler manifolds of Picard number two with automorphisms of positive entropy via derived automorphisms of K3 surfaces of Picard number one. Our hyperKahler manifolds are constructed as moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable objects in derived categories of K3 surfaces. Then automorphisms of positive entropy are induced by derived automorphisms of positive entropy on K3 surfaces.
We classify all smooth projective horospherical varieties with Picard number 1. We prove that the automorphism group of any such variety X acts with at most two orbits and that this group still acts with only two orbits on X blown up at the closed orbit. We characterize all smooth projective two-orbits varieties with Picard number 1 that satisfy this latter property.
Recently Oguiso showed the existence of K3 surfaces that admit a fixed point free automorphism of positive entropy. The K3 surfaces used by Oguiso have a particular rank two Picard lattice. We show, using results of Beauville, that these surfaces are therefore determinantal quartic surfaces. Long ago, Cayley constructed an automorphism of such determinantal surfaces. We show that Cayley's automorphism coincides with Oguiso's free automorphism. We also exhibit an explicit example of a determinantal quartic whose Picard lattice has exactly rank two and for which we thus have an explicit descript…
This thesis studies some examples of families of K3 surfaces with Picard lattices of maximal rank. These families occur as invariants of finite automorphism groups. The Picard-Fuchs differential equations describing the variation of Hodge structure in these families are considered. Techniques are developed to find the corresponding monodromy groups as arithmetic Fuchsian groups acting on the families' period spaces.
If a K3 surface admits an automorphism with a Siegel disk, then its Picard number is an even integer between $0$ and $18$. Conversely, using the method of hypergeometric groups, we are able to construct K3 surface automorphisms with Siegel disks that realize all possible Picard numbers. The constructions involve extensive computer searches for appropriate Salem numbers and computations of algebraic numbers arising from holomorphic Lefschetz-type formulas and related Grothendieck residues.
In this paper we study the automorphisms group of some K3 surfaces which are double covers of the projective plane ramified over a smooth sextic plane curve. More precisely, we study some particlar case of a K3 surface of Picard rank two.
Let $X_0$ be a smooth projective threefold which is Fano or which has Picard number $1$. Let $π:X\rightarrow X_0$ be a finite composition of blowups along smooth centers. We show that for "almost all" of such $X$, if $f\in Aut(X)$ then its first and second dynamical degrees are the same. We also construct many examples of finite blowups $X\rightarrow X_0$, on which any automorphism is of zero entropy. The main idea is that because of the log-concavity of dynamical systems and the invariance of Chern classes under holomorphic automorphisms, there are some constraints on the nef cohomology class…
In this paper we study the geometry of the $14$ families of K3 surfaces of Picard number four with finite automorphism group, whose Néron-Severi lattices have been classified by È.B. Vinberg. We provide projective models, we identify the degrees of a generating set of the Cox ring and in some cases we prove the unirationality of the associated moduli space.
We provide a criterion for when Hilbert squares of complex projective K3 surfaces with Picard number one are strongly ambiguous. This criterion is the same as [DM, Proposition 3.14], but is obtained by a different method. In particular, this enables us to compute the automorphism groups of these Hilbert squares from a different point of view with respect to [BCNS].
This paper concerns K3 surfaces with automorphisms of order 11 in arbitrary characteristic. Specifically we study the wild case and prove that a general such surface in characteristic 11 has Picard number 2. We also construct K3 surfaces with an automorphism of order 11 in every characteristic, and supersingular K3 surfaces whenever possible.
We derive a characterization of the complex projective K3 surfaces which have automorphisms of positive entropy in term of their Néron-Severi lattices. Along the way, we classify the projective K3 surfaces of zero entropy with infinite automorphism groups and we determine the projective K3 surfaces of Picard number at least five with almost abelian automorphism groups, which gives an answer to a long standing question of Nikulin.
We classify primitive non-symplectic automorphisms of order 6 on K3 surfaces. We show how their study can be reduced to the study of non-symplectic automorphisms of order 3 and to a local analysis of the fixed loci. In particular, we determine the possible fixed loci and show that when the Picard lattice is fixed, K3 surfaces come in mirror pairs.
We solve the Picard number problem for complex quintic surfaces by proving that every number between 1 and 45 occurs as Picard number of a quintic surface over the rationals. Our main technique consists in arithmetic deformations of Delsarte surfaces, but we also use K3 surfaces and wild automorphisms.
We study the groups of automorphisms of rational algebraic surfaces that admit a relatively minimal pencil of curves of arithmetic genus one over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. In particular, we classify such surfaces that admit non-trivial automorphisms that act trivially on the Picard group. As an application, we classify classical Enriques surfaces in characteristic $2$ that admit non-trivial numerically trivial automorphisms.
We give a complete classification of smooth, complex projective Fano 4-folds of Picard number 3 having a prime divisor of Picard number 1. They form 28 distinct families, and we compute the main numerical invariants, study the base locus of the anticanonical divisor, and give a comment on rationality. Furthermore, we give an upper bound of both the dimension of the automorphism group and the dimension of the base of the Kuranishi family of a general member.
In this paper we classify complex K3 surfaces with non-symplectic automorphism of order 8 that leaves invariant a smooth elliptic curve. We show that the rank of the Picard group is either 10, 14 or 18 and the fixed locus is the disjoint union of elliptic curves, rational curves and points, whose number does not exceed 1, 2, respectively 14. We give examples corresponding to several types of fixed locus in the classification.
In this paper we study the automorphisms group of some $K3$ surfaces which are double covers of the projective plane ramified over a smooth sextic plane curve. More precisely, we study the case of a $K3$ surface of Picard rank two such that there is a rational curve of degree $d$ which is tangent to the sextic in $d$ points.
Being inspired by a work of Curtis T. McMullen about a very impressive automorphism of a K3 surface of Picard number zero, we shall clarify the structure of the bimeromorphic automorphism group of a non-projective hyperkähler manifold, up to finite group factor. We also discuss relevant topics, especially, new counterexamples of Kodaira's problem about algebraic approximation of a compact Kähler manifold.
We study the Picard groups of moduli spaces of smooth complex projective curves that have a group of automorphisms with a prescribed topological action. One of our main tools is the theory of symmetric mapping class groups. In the first part of the paper, we show that, under mild restrictions, the moduli spaces of smooth curves with an abelian group of automorphisms of a fixed topological type have finitely generated Picard groups. In certain special cases, we are able to compute them exactly. In the second part of the paper, we show that finite abelian level covers of the hyperelliptic locus …
In this expository note, we review the standard formulation of mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, and compare this construction to a description of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces which relies on a sublattice of the Picard lattice. We then show how to combine information about the Picard group of a toric ambient space with data about automorphisms of the toric variety to identify families of K3 surfaces with high Picard rank.
In this paper, we prove a general principle of lifting an automorphism from positive characteristic to zero characteristic. We based on the principle to prove the automorphism group of Fano variety of cubic threefold (fourfold) acts on its cohomology group faithfully. We also prove the same result for a singular cubic threefold (fourfold) with one ordinary double singularity. As an application, we classify the automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds with small middle Picard number over complex numbers.
We show that deformations of a surjective morphism onto a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 are unobstructed and rigid modulo the automorphisms of the target, if the variety of minimal rational tangents of the Fano manifold is non-linear or finite. The condition on the variety of minimal rational tangents holds for practically all known examples of Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, except the projective space. When the variety of minimal rational tangents is non-linear, the proof is based on an earlier result of N. Mok and the author on the birationality of the tangent map. When the varieties …
By the fundamental result of I.I. Piatetsky-Shapiro and I.R. Shafarevich (1971), the automorphism group Aut(X) of a K3 surface X over C and its action on the Picard lattice S_X are prescribed by the Picard lattice S_X. We use this result and our method (1980) to show finiteness of the set of Picard lattices S_X of rank $\ge 3$ such that the automorphism group Aut(X) of the K3 surface X has a non-trivial invariant sublattice S_0 in S_X where the group Aut(X) acts as a finite group. For hyperbolic and parabolic lattices S_0 it has been proved by the author before (1980, 1995). Thus we extend thi…
In a previous paper we have classified the smooth projective symmetric G-varieties with Picard number one (and G semisimple). In this work we give a geometrical description of such varieties. In particular, we determine their group of automorphisms. When this group, Aut(X), acts non-transitively on X, we describe a G-equivariant embedding of the variety X in a homogeneous variety (with respect to a larger group).
For a linear differential equation defined over a formally real differential field K with real closed field of constants k, Crespo, Hajto and van der Put proved that there exists a unique formally real Picard- Vessiot extension up to K-differential automorphism. However such an equation may have Picard-Vessiot extensions which are not formally real fields. The differential Galois group of a Picard-Vessiot extension for this equation has the structure of a linear algebraic group defined over k and is a k-form of the differential Galois group H of the equation over the differential field K(i), w…
Given a smooth hyperplane section $H$ of a rational homogeneous space $G/P$ with Picard number one, we address the question whether it is always possible to lift an automorphism of $H$ to the Lie group $G$, or more precisely to Aut$(G/P)$. Using linear spaces and quadrics in $H$, we show that the answer is positive up to a few well understood exceptions related to Jordan algebras. When $G/P$ is an adjoint variety, we show how to describe Aut$(H)$ completely, extending results obtained by Prokhorov and Zaidenberg when $G$ is the exceptional group $G_2$.
We compute the automorphisms groups of all numerical Godeaux surfaces, i.e. minimal smooth surfaces of general type with K^2 = 1 and p_g = 0, with torsion of the Picard group of order νequals 3, 4, or 5. We present explicit stratifications of the moduli spaces whose strata correspond to different automorphisms groups. Using the automorphisms computation, for each value of νwe define a quotient stack, and prove that for ν= 5 this is indeed the moduli stack of numerical Godeaux surfaces with torsion of order 5. Finally, we describe the inertia stacks of the three quotient stacks.
We compute entropies in a large family of K3 surface automorphisms in (P^1)^3. In keeping with a result by Xie, we find that the entropies vary in a lower semi-continuous manner as the Picard ranks of the K3 surfaces vary.
We show that a characteristic $0$ model $X_R\to \Spec R$, with Picard number $1$ over a geometric generic point, of a K3 surface in characteristic $p\ge 3$, essentially kills all automorphisms (Theorem 5.1). We show that there is an explicitely constructed automorphism on a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic $3$, which has positive entropy, the logarithm of a Salem number of degree $22$ (Theorem 6.4). In particular it does not lift to characteristic $0$. In addition, we show that in any large characteristic, there is an automorphism of a supersingular K3 which has positive entropy and …
Given a rational homogeneous manifold $S=G/P$ of Picard number one and a Schubert variety $S_0 $ of $S$, the pair $(S,S_0)$ is said to be homologically rigid if any subvariety of $S$ having the same homology class as $S_0$ must be a translate of $S_0$ by the automorphism group of $S$. The pair $(S,S_0)$ is said to be Schur rigid if any subvariety of $ S$ with homology class equal to a multiple of the homology class of $S_0$ must be a sum of translates of $S_0$. Earlier we completely determined homologically rigid pairs $(S,S_0)$ in case $S_0 $ is homogeneous and answered the same question in s…
We classify the group of birational automorphisms of Hilbert schemes of points on algebraic K3 surfaces of Picard rank one. We study whether these automorphisms are symplectic or non-symplectic and if there exists a hyperkähler birational model on which they become biregular. We also present new geometrical constructions of these automorphisms.
