In this paper, using connections between Clifford-Wolf isometries and Killing vector fields of constant length on a given Riemannian manifold, we classify simply connected Clifford-Wolf homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. We also get the classification of complete simply connected Riemannian manifolds with the Killing property defined and studied previously by J.E. D'Atri and H.K. Nickerson. In the last part of the paper we study properties of Clifford-Killing spaces, that is, real vector spaces of Killing vector fields of constant length, on odd-dimensional round spheres, and discuss numerous connections between these spaces and various classical objects.
A Clifford-Wolf translation of a connected Finsler space is an isometry which moves each point the same distance. A Finsler space $(M, F)$ is called Clifford-Wolf homogeneous if for any two points $x_1, x_2\in M$ there is a Clifford-Wolf translation $ρ$ such that $ρ(x_1)=x_2$. In this paper, we give a complete classification of connected simply connected Clifford-Wolf homogeneous Randers spaces.
In this paper, we study Clifford-Wolf translations of Finsler spaces. We first give a characterization of Clifford-Wolf translations of Finsler spaces in terms of Killing vector fields. In particular, we show that there is a natural correspondence between Clifford-Wolf translations and the Killing vector fields of constant length. In the special case of homogeneous Randers spaces, we give some explicit sufficient and necessary conditions for an isometry to be a Clifford-Wolf translation. Finally, we construct some explicit examples to explain some of the results of this paper.
A Clifford-Wolf translation of a connected Finsler space is an isometry which moves each point the sam distance. A Finsler space $(M, F)$ is called Clifford-Wolf homogeneous if for any two point $x_1, x_2\in M$ there is a Clifford-Wolf translation $ρ$ such that $ρ(x_1)=x_2$. In this paper, we study Clifford-Wolf translations of left invariant Randers metrics on compact Lie groups. The mian result is that a left invariant Randers metric on a connected compact simple Lie group is Clifford-Wolf homogeneous if and only if the indicatrix of the metric is a round sphere with respect to a bi-invarian…
In this paper, we study Clifford-Wolf translations of homogeneous Randers metrics on spheres. It turns out that we can present a complete description of all the Clifford-Wolf translations of all the homogeneous Randers metrics on spheres. The most important point of this paper is that a new phenomena surfaces. Namely, we find that there are some CW-homogeneous Randers spaces which are essentially not symmetric. This is a great difference compared to Riemannian geometry, where any CW-homogeneous Riemannian manifold must be locally symmetric.
An isometry of a Finsler space is called Clifford-Wolf translation (CW-translation) if it moves all points the same distance. A Finsler space $(M, F)$ is called Clifford-Wolf homogeneous (CW-homogeneous) if for any $x, y\in M$ there is a CW-translation $σ$ such that $σ(x)=y$. We prove that if $F$ is a homogeneous Finsler metric on the sphere $S^n$ such that $(S^n, F)$ is CW-homogeneous, then $F$ must be a Randers metric. This gives a complete classification of CW-homogeneous Finsler metrics on spheres.
In this paper, we introduce a new type of Finsler metrics, called $(α_1,α_2)$-metrics. We define the notion of the good datum of a homogeneous $(α_1,α_2)$-metric and use that to study the geometric properties. In particular, we give a formula of the S-curvature and deduce a condition for the S-curvature to be vanishing identically. Moreover, we consider the restrictive Clifford-Wolf homogeneity of left invariant $(α_1,α_2)$-metrics on compact connected simple Lie groups. We prove that, in some special cases, a restrictively Clifford-Wolf homogeneous $(α_1,α_2)$-metric must be Riemannian. An un…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to a crucial sign error in equation 1. An isometry $ρ$ of a connected Finsler space $(M, F)$ is called bounded if the function $d(x, ρ(x))$ is bounded on $M$. It is called a Clifford-Wolf translation if the function $d(x, ρ(x))$ is constant on $M$. In this paper, we prove that on a complete connected simply connected Finsler space of non-positive flag curvature, an isometry is bounded if and only if it is a Clifford-Wolf translation. As an application, we prove that a homogeneous Finsler space of negative flag curvature admits a transitive solvab…
Let $(M,F)$ be a connected Finsler space. An isometry of $(M,F)$ is called a Clifford-Wolf translation (or simply CW-translation) if it moves all points the same distance. The compact Finsler space $(M,F)$ is called restrictively Clifford-Wolf homogeneous (restrictively CW-homogeneous) if for any two sufficiently close points $x_1,x_2\in M$, there exists a CW-translation $σ$ such that $σ(x_1)=x_2$. In this paper, we define the good normalized datum for a homogeneous non-Riemannian $(α,β)$-space, and use it to study the restrictive CW-homogeneity of left invariant $(α,β)$-metrics on a compact c…
In this paper we introduce the twistor space of a Riemannian manifold with an even Clifford structure. This notion generalizes the twistor space of quaternion-Hermitian manifolds and weak-Spin(9) structures. We also construct almost complex structures on the twistor space for parallel even Clifford structures and check their integrability. Moreover, we prove that in some cases one can give Kähler and Nearly-Kähler metrics to these spaces.
Using representations of Clifford algebras we construct indecomposable singular Riemannian foliations on round spheres, most of which are non-homogeneous. This generalizes the construction of non-homogeneous isoparametric hypersurfaces due to by Ferus, Karcher and Munzner.
We introduce the notion of even Clifford structures on Riemannian manifolds, a framework generalizing almost Hermitian and quaternion-Hermitian geometries. We give the complete classification of manifolds carrying parallel even Clifford structures: Kähler, quaternion-Kähler and Riemannian products of quaternion-Kähler manifolds, several classes of 8-dimensional manifolds, families of real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians, as well as Rosenfeld's elliptic projective planes, which are symmetric spaces associated to the exceptional simple Lie groups. As an application, we classify all Riema…
We introduce a notion of twisted pure spinor in order to characterize, in a unified way, all the special Riemannian holonomy groups just as a classical pure spinor characterizes the special Kähler holonomy. Motivated by certain curvature identities satisfied by manifolds admitting parallel twisted pure spinors, we also introduce the Clifford monopole equations as a natural geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten equations. We show that they restrict to the Seiberg-Witten equations in 4 dimensions, and that they admit non-trivial solutions on manifolds with special Riemannian holonomy.
We give a classification of irreducible four-dimensional symmetric spaces $G/H$ which admit compact Clifford-Klein forms, where $G$ is the transvection group of $G/H$. For this, we develop a method that applies to particular 1-connected solvable symmetric spaces. We also examine a `solvable analogue' of Kobayashi's conjecture for reductive groups and find an evidence that the reductive assumption in Kobayashi's conjecture is crucial.
We complete the classification, initiated by the second named author, of homogeneous singular Riemannian foliations of spheres that are lifts of foliations produced from Clifford systems.
This article provides a pedagogically oriented introduction to geometric (Clifford) calculus on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Unlike usual approaches to the topic, which rely on embedding the geometric algebra either within a tensor algebra or within a vector manifold framework, here we define geometric calculus directly, by elementary methods. In particular we use an axiomatic approach that directly parallels textbook introductions to general relativity and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, so that no structure outside the metrical Clifford bundle of the manifold need be introduced. On this basis we…
We give an inductive construction for irreducible Clifford systems on Euclidean vector spaces. We then discuss how this notion can be adapted to Riemannian manifolds, and outline some developments in octonionic geometry.
In this paper we prove two inequalities relating the warping function to various curvature terms, for warped products isometrically immersed in Riemannian manifolds. This extends work of B. Y. Chen for the case of immersions into space forms. Finally we give an application where the target manifold is the Clifford torus.
We ask a general question: what are locally homogeneous compact pseudo-Riemannian Einstein manifolds? We show that any standard compact Clifford-Klein form of a simple non-compact Lie group admits at least one Einstein metric. We conjecture that these are basically the only possible locally homogeneous Einstein pseudo-Riemannian compact manifolds using T. Kobayashi's conjecture as a guiding principle.
Locally isotropic pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are known to be locally symmetric; this result is due to Wolf. In the Riemannian setting one proof, due to Szabó, uses spectral properties of the so-called Szabó operator. In this paper we extend Szabó's method to the pseudo-Riemannian setting, obtaining results comparable to those of Wolf. Most results concerning the Szabó operator in the pseudo-Riemannian setting are presented using methods of algebraic topology. This paper exploits the polynomial nature of the Szabó operator along with its behavior over the nullcone, both of which have received …
We consider strict and complete nearly Kaehler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. The holonomy representation of the canonical Hermitian connection is studied. We show that a strict and complete nearly Kaehler is locally a Riemannian product of homogenous nearly Kaehler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic Kaehler manifolds and 6-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds. As an application we obtain structure results for totally geodesic Riemannian foliations admitting a compatible Kaehler structure. Finally, we obtain a classification result for the homogenous case, reducing a …
The Hermitian symmetric space $M=\mathrm{EIII}$ appears in the classification of complete simply connected Riemannian manifolds carrying a parallel even Clifford structure. This means the existence of a real oriented Euclidean vector bundle $E$ over it together with an algebra bundle morphism $φ:\mathrm{Cl}^0(E) \rightarrow \mathrm{End}(TM)$ mapping $Λ^2 E$ into skew-symmetric endomorphisms, and the existence of a metric connection on $E$ compatible with $φ$. We give an explicit description of such a vector bundle $E$ as a sub-bundle of $\mathrm{End}(TM)$. From this we construct a canonical di…
We present a new link between the Invariant Theory of infinitesimal singular Riemannian foliations and Jordan algebras. This, together with an inhomogeneous version of Weyl's First Fundamental Theorems, provides a characterization of the recently discovered Clifford foliations in terms of basic polynomials. This link also yields new structural results about infinitesimal foliations, such as the existence of non-trivial symmetries.
This article discusses the existence problem of a compact quotient of a symmetric space by a properly discontinuous group with emphasis on the non-Riemannian case. Discontinuous groups are not always abundant in a homogeneous space $G/H$ if $H$ is non-compact. The first half of the article elucidates general machinery to study discontinuous groups for $G/H$, followed by the most update and complete list of symmetric spaces with/without compact quotients. In the second half, as applications of general theory, we prove: (i) there exists a 15 dimensional compact pseudo-Riemannian manifold of sign…
This article studies the volume of compact quotients of reductive homogeneous spaces. Let $G/H$ be a reductive homogeneous space and $Γ$ a discrete subgroup of $G$ acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on $G/H$. We prove that the volume of $Γ\backslash G/H$ is the integral, over a certain homology class of $Γ$, of a $G$-invariant form on $G/K$ (where $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup of $G$). As a corollary, we obtain a large class of homogeneous spaces the compact quotients of which have rational volume. For instance, compact quotients of pseudo-Riemannian spaces of constant curvatu…
We prove Gray & Wolf's conjecture that a Riemannian homogeneous manifold admitting a strict nearly Kahler structure is 3-symmetric. We actually classify them in dimension 6 and use previous results of Swann, Cleyton and Nagy to prove the conjecture in higher dimensions.
Spinor representations of surfaces immersed into 4-dimensional pseudo-riemannian manifolds are defined in terms of minimal left ideals and tensor decompositions of Clifford algebras. The classification of spinor fields and Dirac operators on the immersed surfaces is given. The Dirac-Hestenes spinor field on surfaces immersed into Lorentzian manifolds and on surfaces conformally immersed into Minkowski spacetime is defined.
In this paper we develop new methods of study of generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we obtain a complete classification of generalized normal homogeneous Riemannian metrics on spheres. We prove that for any connected (almost effective) transitive on $S^n$ compact Lie group $G$, the family of $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics on $S^n$ contains generalized normal homogeneous but not normal homogeneous metrics if and only if this family depends on more than one parameters. Any such family (that exists only for $n=2k+1$) contains a metric $g_{\can}$ of constant sect…
We survey the geometry of Lagrange and Finsler spaces and discuss the issues related to the definition of curvature of nonholonomic manifolds enabled with nonlinear connection structure. It is proved that any commutative Riemannian geometry (in general, any Riemann--Cartan space) defined by a generic off--diagonal metric structure (with an additional affine connection possessing nontrivial torsion) is equivalent to a generalized Lagrange, or Finsler, geometry modeled on nonholonomic manifolds. This results in the problem of constructing noncommutative geometries with local anisotropy, in parti…
We study riemannian coverings $φ: \widetilde{M} \to Γ\backslash \widetilde{M}$ where $\widetilde{M}$ is a normal homogeneous space $G/K_1$ fibered over another normal homogeneous space $M = G/K$ and $K$ is locally isomorphic to a nontrivial product $K_1\times K_2$. The most familiar such fibrations $π: \widetilde{M} \to M$ are the natural fibrations of Stieffel manifolds $SO(n_1 + n_2)/SO(n_1)$ over Grassmann manifolds $SO(n_1 + n_2)/[SO(n_1)\times SO(n_2)]$ and the twistor space bundles over quaternionic symmetric spaces (= quaternion-Kaehler symmetric spaces = Wolf spaces). The most familiar…
With a view toward sub-Riemannian geometry, we introduce and study H-type foliations. These structures are natural generalizations of K-contact geometries which encompass as special cases K-contact manifolds, twistor spaces, 3K contact manifolds and H-type groups. Under an horizontal Ricci curvature lower bound, we prove on those structures sub-Riemannian diameter upper bounds and first eigenvalue estimates for the sub-Laplacian. Then, using a result by Moroianu-Semmelmann, we classify the H-type foliations that carry a parallel horizontal Clifford structure. Finally, we prove an horizontal Ei…
This work reconsiders the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic Dirac operators of Hermitian Clifford analysis to determine whether or not they are the natural generalization of the orthogonal Dirac operator to spaces with complex structure. We argue the generalized gradient construction of Stein and Weiss based on representation theory of Lie groups is the natural way to construct such a Dirac-type operator because applied to a Riemannian spin manifold it provides the Atiyah-Singer Dirac operator. This method, however, does not apply to these Hermitian Dirac operators because the representations o…
In this paper we give an explicit description of the bounded displacement isometries of a class of spaces that includes the Riemannian nilmanifolds. The class of spaces consists of metric spaces (and thus includes Finsler manifolds) on which an exponential solvable Lie group acts transitively by isometries. The bounded isometries are proved to be of constant displacement. Their characterization gives further evidence for the author's 1962 conjecture on homogeneous Riemannian quotient manifolds. That conjecture suggests that if $Γ\backslash M$ is a Riemannian quotient of a connected simply conn…
The structure of nearly Kähler manifolds was studied by Gray in several papers. More recently, a relevant progress on the subject has been done by Nagy. Among other results, he proved that a strict and complete nearly Kähler manifold is locally a Riemannian product of homogeneous nearly Kähler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic K{ähler manifolds and six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds, where the homogeneous nearly Kähler factors are also 3-symmetric spaces. In the present paper, using the lists of $3$-symmetric spaces given by Wolf & Gray, we display the exhaustive list of irreducibl…
In this paper we give a construction of Fedosov quantization incorporating the odd variables and an analogous formula to Getzler's pseudodifferential calculus composition formula is obtained. A Fedosov type connection is constructed on the bundle of Weyl tensor Clifford algebras over the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. The quantum algebra associated with this connection is used to define a deformation of the exterior algebra of Riemannian manifolds.
We obtain the topological obstructions to existence of a bundle of irreducible real Clifford modules over a pseudo-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of arbitrary dimension and signature and prove that bundles of Clifford modules are associated to so-called real Lipschitz structures. The latter give a generalization of spin structures based on certain groups which we call real Lipschitz groups. In the fiberwise-irreducible case, we classify the latter in all dimensions and signatures. As a simple application, we show that the supersymmetry generator of eleven-dimensional supergravity in "mostly plus"…
The subject of this PhD thesis is noncommutative geometry - more specifically spectral triples - and how it can be generalized to semi-Riemannian manifolds generally, and Lorentzian manifolds in particular. The first half of this thesis will thus be dedicated to the transition from Riemannian to semi-Riemannian manifolds. This entails a study of Clifford algebras for indefinite vector spaces and Spin structures on semi-Riemannian manifolds. An important consequence of this is the introduction of Krein spaces, which will enable us to generalize spectral triples to indefinite spectral triples. I…
Using a flow first introduced by J.P. Anderson, we obtain some existence theorems for harmonic maps from a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold into a complete Riemannian manifold. In particular, we prove as a corollary a recent result of Hardt and Wolf stating that any quasisymmetric map of the sphere that is sufficiently close to the identity can be extended to a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism of the hyperbolic ball. This version contains a much simpler proof than the first version.
Monogenic functions are basic to Clifford analysis. On Euclidean space they are defined as smooth functions with values in the corresponding Clifford algebra satisfying a certain system of first order differential equations, usually referred to as the Dirac equation. There are two equally natural extensions of these equations to a Riemannian spin manifold only one of which is conformally invariant. We present a straightforward exposition.
This is the second of a series of two papers where we construct embedded Willmore tori with small area constraint in Riemannian three-manifolds. In both papers the construction relies on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, the difficulty being the Möbius degeneration of the tori. In the first paper the construction was performed via minimization, here by Morse Theory; to this aim we establish new geometric expansions of the derivative of the Willmore functional on exponentiated small Clifford tori degenerating, under the action of the Möbius group, to small geodesic spheres with a small handle. By u…
We construct embedded Willmore tori with small area constraint in Riemannian three-manifolds under some curvature condition used to prevent Möbius degeneration. The construction relies on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction; to this aim we establish new geometric expansions of exponentiated small symmetric Clifford tori and analyze the sharp asymptotic behavior of degenerating tori under the action of the Möbius group. In this first work we prove two existence results by minimizing or maximizing a suitable reduced functional, in particular we obtain embedded area-constrained Willmore tori (or, equiva…
A bundle gerbe is constructed from an oriented smooth vector bundle of even rank with a fiberwise inner product, over a compact connected orientable smooth manifold with Riemannian metric. From a trivialization of the bundle gerbe is constructed an irreducible Clifford module bundle, a spinor bundle over the smooth free loop space of the manifold. First, a Clifford algebra bundle over the loop space is constructed from the vector bundle. A polarization class bundle is constructed, choosing continuously over each point of the loop space a polarization class of Lagrangian subspaces of the comple…
In this paper we develop the basic tools for a classification of Killing vector fields of constant length on pseudo--riemannian homogeneous spaces. This extends a recent paper of M. Xu and J. A. Wolf, which classified the pairs $(M,ξ)$ where $M = G/H$ is a Riemannian normal homogeneous space, $G$ is a compact simple Lie group, and $ξ\in \mathfrak{g}$ defines a nonzero Killing vector field of constant length on $M$. The method there was direct computation. Here we make use of the moment map $M \to \mathfrak{g}^*$ and the flag manifold structure of Ad(G)$ξ$ to give a shorter, more geometric proo…
An almost quaternion-Hermitian structure on a Riemannian manifold $(M^{4n},g)$ is a reduction of the structure group of $M$ to $\mathrm{Sp}(n)\mathrm{Sp}(1)\subset \mathrm{SO}(4n)$. In this paper we show that a compact simply connected homogeneous almost quaternion-Hermitian manifold of non-vanishing Euler characteristic is either a Wolf space, or $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{S}^2$, or the complex quadric $\mathrm{SO}(7)/\mathrm{U}(3)$.
Let V be the pseudo-Euclidean vector space of signature (p,q), p>2 and W a module over the even Clifford algebra Cl^0 (V). A homogeneous quaternionic manifold (M,Q) is constructed for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: \wedge^2 W \to V. If the skew symmetric vector valued bilinear form Πis nondegenerate then (M,Q) is endowed with a canonical pseudo-Riemannian metric g such that (M,Q,g) is a homogeneous quaternionic pseudo-Kähler manifold. The construction is shown to have a natural mirror in the category of supermanifolds. In fact, for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: Sym^2 W \to V a h…
We classify six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kähler manifolds and give a positive answer to Gray and Wolf's conjecture: every homogeneous nearly Kähler manifold is a Riemannian 3-symmetric space equipped with its canonical almost Hermitian structure. The only four examples in dimension 6 are $S^3 \times S^3$, the complex projective space $\CM P^3$, the flag manifold $\mathbb F^3$ and the sphere $S^6$. We develop, about each of these spaces, a distinct aspect of nearly Kähler geometry and make in the same time a sharp description of its specific homogeneous structure.
A classical result of Gelfand shows that the topologized spectrum of characters on commutative Banach algebra is homeomorphic to the underlying space. This fact is used in solving the Calderón problem in dimension 2 via the boundary control (BC) method. To apply the BC method in dimension 3, the algebra of complex holomorphic functions can be replaced by the space of harmonic quaternion fields, but this space is no longer an algebra and is not commutative. Nonetheless, it has been shown that a suitable notion of a spectrum exists and in the case when the underlying space is convex, the spectru…
In this paper we introduce the Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated to a connection on Riemann-Cartan space(time) and standard Dirac and spin-Dirac operators associated with a Levi-Civita connection on a Riemannian (Lorentzian) space(time) and calculate the square of these operators, which play an important role in several topics of modern Mathematics, in particular in the study of the geometry of moduli spaces of a class of black holes, the geometry of NS-5 brane solutions of type II supergravity theories and BPS solitons in some string theories. We obtain a generalized Lichnerowicz form…
We propose an L-BFGS optimization algorithm on Riemannian manifolds using minibatched stochastic variance reduction techniques for fast convergence with constant step sizes, without resorting to linesearch methods designed to satisfy Wolfe conditions. We provide a new convergence proof for strongly convex functions without using curvature conditions on the manifold, as well as a convergence discussion for nonconvex functions. We discuss a couple of ways to obtain the correction pairs used to calculate the product of the gradient with the inverse Hessian, and empirically demonstrate their use i…
Let $M$ be a compact Riemannian manifold endowed with an isometric action of a compact Lie group. The method of the Witten deformation is used to compute the virtual representation-valued equivariant index of a transversally elliptic, first order differential operator on $M$. The multiplicities of irreducible representations in the index are expressed in terms of local quantities associated to the isolated singular points of an equivariant bundle map that is locally Clifford multiplication by a Killing vector field near these points.
We show that every $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifold of dimension $4n + 3$ admits a locally defined Riemannian submersion over a quaternionic Kähler manifold of scalar curvature $16n(n+2)αδ$. In the non-degenerate case ($δ\neq 0$) we describe all homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over symmetric Wolf spaces (case $αδ> 0$) and over their the noncompact dual symmetric spaces (case $αδ< 0$). If $αδ> 0$, this yields a complete classification of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds; for $αδ< 0$, we provide a general construction of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over…
