Let $α,β\in(0,1)$ and \[ K^{α,β}:=\left\{a\in L^\infty(\T): \sum_{k=1}^\infty |\hat{a}(-k)|^2 k^{2α}<\infty, \sum_{k=1}^\infty |\hat{a}(k)|^2 k^{2β}<\infty \right\}. \] Mark Krein proved in 1966 that $K^{1/2,1/2}$ forms a Banach algebra. He also observed that this algebra is important in the asymptotic theory of finite Toeplitz matrices. Ten years later, Harold Widom extended earlier results of Gabor Szegő for scalar symbols and established the asymptotic trace formula \[ \operatorname{trace}f(T_n(a))=(n+1)G_f(a)+E_f(a)+o(1) \quad\text{as}\ n\to\infty \] for finite Toeplitz matrices $T_n(a)$ with matrix symbols $a\in K^{1/2,1/2}_{N\times N}$. We show that if $α+β\ge 1$ and $a\in K^{α,β}_{N\times N}$, then the Szegő-Widom asymptotic trace formula holds with $o(1)$ replaced by $o(n^{1-α-β})$.
We give a survey on generalized Krein algebras $K_{p,q}^{α,β}$ and their applications to Toeplitz determinants. Our methods originated in a paper by Mark Krein of 1966, where he showed that $K_{2,2}^{1/2,1/2}$ is a Banach algebra. Subsequently, Widom proved the strong Szegő limit theorem for block Toeplitz determinants with symbols in $(K_{2,2}^{1/2,1/2})_{N\times N}$ and later two of the authors studied symbols in the generalized Krein algebras $(K_{p,q}^{α,β})_{N\times N}$, where $λ:=1/p+1/q=α+β$ and $λ=1$. We here extend these results to $0<λ<1$. The entire paper is based on fundamental wor…
We prove a higher order asymptotic formula for traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices with symbols belonging to Hölder-Zygmund spaces. The remainder in this formula goes to zero very rapidly for very smooth symbols. This formula refine previous asymptotic trace formulas by Szegö and Widom and complement higher order asymptotic formulas for determinants of finite block Toeplitz matrices due to Böttcher and Silbermann.
We prove higher order asymptotic formulas for determinants and traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices generated by matrix functions belonging to generalized Hölder spaces with characteristic functions from the Bari-Stechkin class. We follow the approach of Böttcher and Silbermann and generalize their results for symbols in standard Hölder spaces.
Toeplitz operators on spaces $H^p(G)\ (1< p<\infty)$ associated with compact connected Abelian group $G$ with ordered dual are considered and the generalization of the classical Gohberg-Krein theorem on the Fredholm index of such operators with continuous symbols is proved. Applications to spectral theory of Toeplitz operators are given and examples of evident computation of index have been considered.
While the symbol map for the collection of bounded Toeplitz operators is well studied, there has been little work on a symbol map for densely defined Toeplitz operators. In this work a family of candidate symbols, the Sarason Sub-Symbols, is introduced as a means of reproducing the symbol of a densely defined Toeplitz operator. This leads to a partial answer to a question posed by Donald Sarason in 2008. In the bounded case the Toeplitzness of an operator can be classified in terms of its Sarason Sub-Symbols. This justifies the investigation into the application of the Sarason Sub-Symbols on d…
We make a progress towards describing the commutants of Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbols on the Bergman space over the unit disk. Our work greatly generalizes several partial results in the field.
This work provides two results obtained as a consequence of an inversion formula for Toeplitz matrices with real symbol. First we obtain an asymptotic expression for the minimal eigenvalues of a Toeplitz matrix with a symbolwhich is periodic, even and derivable on $[0, 2π[$. Next we prove that a Toeplitz band matrix with a symbol without zeros on the united circle is invertible with an inverse which is essentially a band matrix. As a consequence of this last statement we give an asymptotic estimation for the entries of the inverse of a Toeplitz matrix with a regular symbol.
In this note we describe centralizers of Toeplitz operators with polynomial symbols on the Bergman space. As a consequence it is shown that if an element of the norm closed algebra generated by all Toeplitz operators commutes with a Toeplitz operator of a noncon- stant polynomial, then this element is a Toeplitz operator of a bounded holomorphic function.
Following previous works for the unit ball, we define quasi-radial pseudo-homogeneous symbols on the projective space and obtain the corresponding commutativity results for Toeplitz operators. A geometric interpretation of these symbols in terms of moment maps is developed. This leads us to the introduction of a new family of symbols, extended pseudo-homogeneous, that provide larger commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators. This family of symbols provides new commutative Banach algebras generated by Toeplitz operators on the unit ball.
We characterize the trace class membership of Toeplitz operators with distributional symbols acting on the Bergman space on the unit disk. The Berezin transform of distributions, introduced in the paper, yields a formula for the trace. Several instructive examples are also given.
Conditions are established under which Fredholmness, Coburn's property and one- or two-sided invertibility are shared by a Toeplitz operator with matrix symbol $G$ and the Toeplitz operator with scalar symbol $\det G$. These results are based on one-sided invertibility criteria for rectangular matrices over appropriate commutative rings and related scalar corona type problems.
We study the boundedness of Toeplitz operators on Segal-Bargmann spaces in various contexts. Using Gutzmer's formula as the main tool we identify symbols for which the Toeplitz operators correspond to Fourier multipliers on the underlying groups. The spaces considered include Fock spaces, Hermite and twisted Bergman spaces and Segal-Bargmann spaces associated to Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type.
This paper characterises the dual of the model space $K_I^1$, where $I$ is an inner function, intersected with the shifted Hardy space, $z H^1$. With this duality result, it is then shown that every bounded truncated Toeplitz operator on the model space $K_I^2$ has a bounded symbol if and only if every compact truncated Toeplitz operator on $K_I^2$ has a symbol which is of the form $I$ multiplied by a continuous function.
We study Toeplitz operators on the Bargmann space, with Toeplitz symbols that are exponentials of inhomogeneous quadratic polynomials. It is shown that the boundedness of such operators is implied by the boundedness of the corresponding Weyl symbols.
Let $m \geq 1$ be an integer and let $H_m(\mathbb B)$ be the analytic functional Hilbert space on the unit ball $\mathbb B \subset \mathbb C^n$ given by the reproducing kernel $K_m(z,w) = (1 - \langle z,w \rangle)^{-m}$. We prove that Toeplitz operators with pluriharmonic symbol on $H_m(\mathbb B)$ can be characterized by an algebraic identity which extends the classical Brown-Halmos characterization of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc as well as corresponding results of Louhichi and Olofsson for Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbol on weighted Bergman spaces of the di…
This paper studies matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators, which are a vectorial generalisation of truncated Toeplitz operators. It is demonstrated that, although there exist matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators without a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for any $p \in (2, \infty ]$, there is a wide class of matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operators which possess a matrix symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$. In the case when the matrix-valued truncated Toeplitz operator has a symbol in $L^p$ for some $p \in (2, \infty ]$, an approach is developed which bypasses some of the technical…

Compressions of Toeplitz operators to coinvariant subspaces of $H^2$ are called truncated Toeplitz operators. We study two questions related to these operators. The first, raised by Sarason, is whether boundedness of the operator implies the existence of a bounded symbol; the second is the reproducing kernel thesis. We show that in general the answer to the first question is negative, and we exhibit some classes of spaces for which the answers to both questions are positive.
In this paper we consider the C*-algebra $C^{*}(\{C_φ\}\cup\mathcal{T}(PQC(\mathbb{T})))/K(H^{2})$ generated by Toeplitz operators with piece-wise quasi-continuous symbols and a composition operator induced by a parabolic linear fractional non-automorphism symbol modulo compact operators on the Hilbert-Hardy space $H^{2}$. This C*-algebra is commutative. We characterize its maximal ideal space. We apply our results to the question of determining the essential spectra of linear combinations of a class of composition operators and Toeplitz operators.
We consider kernels of unbounded Toeplitz operators in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$ in terms of a factorization of their symbols. We study the existence of a minimal Toeplitz kernel containing a given function in $H^p(\mathbb C^+)$, we describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators whose symbol possesses a certain factorization involving two different Hardy spaces and we establish relations between the kernels of two operators whose symbols differ by a factor which corresponds, in the unit circle, to a non-integer power of $z$. We apply the results to describe the kernels of Toeplitz operators with non-vani…
Theorems about characterization of finite rank Toeplitz operators in Fock-Segal-Bargmann spaces, known previously only for symbols with compact support, are carried over to symbols without that restriction, however with a rather rapid decay at infinity. The proof is based upon a new version of the Stone-Weierstrass approximation theorem.
In the setting of the Fock space over the complex plane, Bauer and Lee have recently characterized commutants of Toeplitz operators with radial symbols, under the assumption that symbols have at most polynomial growth at infinity. Their characterization states: If one of the symbols of two commuting Toeplitz operators is nonconstant and radial, then the other must be also radial. We extend this result to the Fock-Sobolev spaces.
In this note we describe the commutant of the multiplication operator by a monomial in the Toeplitz algebra of a complete strongly pseudoconvex Reinhardt domain.
In this paper a definition is given for an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator with rational symbol which has poles on the unit circle. It is shown that the operator is Fredholm if and only if the symbol has no zeroes on the unit circle, and a formula for the index is given as well. Finally, a matrix representation of the operator is discussed.
For any bounded measurable function $f$ on the unit ball $B_n$, let $T_f$ be the Toeplitz operator with symbol $f$ acting on the Bergman space $A^2(B_n)$. The Zero-Product Problem asks: if $f_1,..., f_N$ are bounded measurable functions such that $T_{f_1}... T_{f_N}=0$, does it follow that one of the functions must be zero almost everywhere? This paper give the affirmative answer to this question when all except possibly one of the symbols are radial functions. The answer in the general case remains unknown.
This paper deals with subnormality of Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols and, in particular, with an appropriate reformulation of Halmos's Problem 5: Which subnormal Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols are either normal or analytic? In 1976, M. Abrahamse showed that if $φ\in L^\infty$ is such that $φ$ or $\overlineφ$ is of bounded type and if $T_φ$ is subnormal, then $T_φ$ is either normal or analytic. In this paper we establish a matrix-valued version of Abrahamse's Theorem and then apply this result to solve the following Toeplitz completion problem: Find the unspecified…
Given a polyanalytic function, we show that the corresponding Toeplitz operator on the Bergman space of the unit disc can be expressed as a quotient of certain differential operators with holomorphic coefficients. This enables us to obtain several operator theoretic results including a criterion for invertibility of a Toeplitz operator.
The paper discusses the spectrum of Toeplitz operators in Bargmann spaces. Our Toeplitz operators have real symbols with a variable sign and a compact support. A class of examples is considered where the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of such operators can be computed. These examples show that this asymptotics depends on the geometry of the supports of the positive and negative parts of the symbol. Applications to the perturbed Landau Hamiltonian are given.
In sprite by Berger-Coburn theorems and their conjecture in \cite{Coburn1994}, we use the Fourier transform to decompose $ T_{g}$ as an infinite sum of Toeplitz operators with symbols which have compact support in the frequency domain. As a consequence, we obtain a sufficient condition for $ T_{g}$ to be bounded in terms of the Carleson measure conditions defined by the heat transform of the symbol $g$. Moreover the decomposition of a Toeplitz operator leads us to get easily understanding that for a bounded function $g$, if its Berezin transform vanishes at infinity, then the Toeplitz operator…
An asymptotic formula is found for a Toeplitz determinant with the symbol supported on an arc of the unit circle in the case when the symbol has Fisher-Hartwig singularities.
Using the approach based on sesquilinear forms, we introduce Toeplitz operator in the analytic Bergman space on the upper half-plane with strongly singular symbols, derivatives of measures. Conditions for boundedness and compactness of such operators are found. A procedure of reduction of Toeplitz operators in Bergman spaces of polyanalytic functions to operators with singular symbols in the analytic Bergman space by means of the creation-annihilation structure is elaborated, which leads to the description of the properties of the former operators
It is well known that the essential norm of a Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb{T})$, $1 < p < \infty$ is greater than or equal to the $L^\infty(\mathbb{T})$ norm of its symbol. In 1988, A. Böttcher, N. Krupnik, and B. Silbermann posed a question on whether or not the equality holds in the case of continuous symbols. We answer this question in the negative. On the other hand, we show that the essential norm of a Toeplitz operator with a continuous symbol is less than or equal to twice the $L^\infty(\mathbb{T})$ norm of the symbol and prove more precise $p$-dependent estimates.
The geometric descriptions of the (essential) spectra of Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols are among the most beautiful results about Toeplitz operators on Hardy spaces $H^p$ with $1<p<\infty$. In the Hardy space $H^1$, the essential spectra of Toeplitz operators are known for continuous symbols and symbols in the Douglas algebra $C+H^\infty$. It is natural to ask whether the theory for piecewise continuous symbols can also be extended to $H^1$. We answer this question in negative and show in particular that the Toeplitz operator is never bounded on $H^1$ if its symbol has a…
Truncated Toeplitz operators and their asymmetric versions are studied in the context of the Hardy space $H^p$ of the half-plane for $1<p<\infty$. It is shown that they are equivalent after extension to $2 \times 2$ matricial Toeplitz operators, which allows one to deduce information about their invertibility properties. Shifted model spaces are presented in the context of invariant subspaces, allowing one to deduce new Beurling--Lax theorems.
This paper is a continuation of our study of a class of Toeplitz-like operators with a rational symbol which has a pole on the unit circle. A description of the spectrum and its various parts, i.e., point, residual and continuous spectrum, is given, as well as a description of the essential spectrum. In this case, the essential spectrum need not be connected in ${\mathbb C}$. Various examples illustrate the results.
We discuss an extension of Toeplitz quantization based on polyanalytic functions. We derive isomorphism theorem for polyanalytic Toeplitz operators between weighted Sobolev-Fock spaces of polyanalytic functions, which are images of modulation spaces under polyanalytic Bargmann transforms. This generalizes well-known results from the analytic setting. Finally, we derive an asymptotic symbol calculus and present an asymptotic expansion of complex Weyl operators in terms of polyanalytic Toeplitz operators.
We describe the asymptotics of the spectral norm of finite Toeplitz matrices generated by functions with Fisher-Hartwig singularities as the matrix dimension goes to infinity. In the case of positive generating functions, our result provides the asymptotics of the largest eigenvalue, which is of interest in time series with long-range memory.
For a partition $\boldsymbol{k} = (k_1, \dots, k_m)$ of $n$ consider the group $\mathrm{U}(\boldsymbol{k}) = \mathrm{U}(k_1) \times \dots \times \mathrm{U}(k_m)$ block diagonally embedded in $\mathrm{U}(n)$ and the center $\mathbb{T}^m$ of $\mathrm{U}(\boldsymbol{k})$. We study the Toeplitz operators with $\mathbb{T}^m$-invariant symbols acting on the weighted Bergman spaces on the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$. We introduce the $(\boldsymbol{k},j)$-quasi-radial quasi-homogeneous symbols as those that are invariant under the group $\mathrm{U}(\boldsymbol{k},j,\mathbb{T})$ obtained from $\mathrm{U}(…
On the weakly pseudo-convex domains $Ω_p^n$ we introduce quasi-homogeneous quasi-radial symbols. These are used to prove the existence of a commutative Banach algebra of Toeplitz operators on Bergman space of $Ω_p^n$. We also show that group theoretic and geometric properties for our symbols are satisfied. The results presented here contain the geometric description of the symbols introduced by N. Vasilevski for the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$.
Unbounded (and bounded) Toeplitz operators (TO) with rational symbols are analysed in detail showing that they are densely defined closed and have finite dimensional kernels and deficiency spaces. The latter spaces as well as the domains, ranges, spectral and Fredholm points are determined. In particular, in the symmetric case, i.e., for a real rational symbol the deficiency spaces and indices are explicitly available. The concluding section gives a brief overview on the research on unbounded TO in order to locate the present contribution. Regarding properties of unbounded TO in general, it fu…
This paper contains a further analysis of the Toeplitz-like operators $T_ω$ on $H^p$ with rational symbol $ω$ having poles on the unit circle that were previously studied in [5.6]. Here the adjoint operator $T_ω^*$ is described. In the case where $p=2$ and $ω$ has poles only on the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$, a description is given for when $T_ω^*$ is symmetric and when $T_ω^*$ admits a selfadjoint extension. Also in the case where $p=2$, $ω$ has only poles on $\mathbb{T}$ and in addition $ω$ is proper, it is shown that $T_ω^*$ coincides with the unbounded Toeplitz operator defined by Sarason in…
The Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ is the space of holomorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ that are square-integrable with respect to the Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{C}^n$. This space plays an important role in several subfields of analysis and representation theory. In particular, it has for a long time been a model to study Toeplitz operators. Esmeral and Maximenko showed in 2016 that radial Toeplitz operators on $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{C})$ generate a commutative $C^*$-algebra which is isometrically isomorphic to the $C^*$-algebra $C_{b,u}(\mathbb{N}_0,ρ_1)$. In this article, we exten…
Unlike Toeplitz operators on $H^2$, truncated Toeplitz operators do not have a natural matricial characterization. Consequently, these operators are difficult to study numerically. In this note we provide criteria for a matrix with distinct eigenvalues to be unitarily equivalent to a truncated Toeplitz operator having an analytic symbol. This test is constructive and we illustrate it with several examples. As a byproduct, we also prove that every complex symmetric operator on a Hilbert space of dimension $\leq 3$ is unitarily equivalent to a direct sum of truncated Toeplitz operators.
An estimate for the norm of selfadjoint Toeplitz operators with a radial, bounded and integrable symbol is obtained. This emphasizes the fact that the norm of such operator is strictly less than the supremum norm of the symbol. Consequences for time-frequency localization operators are also given.
This paper concerns the analysis of an unbounded Toeplitz-like operator generated by a rational matrix function having poles on the unit circle T. It extends the analysis of such operators generated by scalar rational functions with poles on T found in [11,12,13]. A Wiener-Hopf type factorization of rational matrix functions with poles and zeroes on T is proved and then used to analyze the Fredholm properties of such Toeplitz-like operators. A formula for the index, based on the factorization, is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the determinant of the matrix function having no zeroes on T …
