The synthesis and characterization of the pyrochlore solid solutions, Y2Ti2-xNbxO7-y, Lu2Ti2-xNbxO7-y, Y2Ti2-xTaxO7-y and Lu2TiTaO7-y (-0.4<y<0.5), is described. Synthesis at 1600 C, and 10-5 Torr yields oxygen deficiency in all systems. All compounds are found to be paramagnetic and semiconducting, with the size of the local moments being less, in some cases substantially less, than the expected value for the number of nominally unpaired electrons present. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) shows that all compounds can be fully oxidized while retaining the pyrochlore structure, yielding oxygen rich pyrochlores as white powders. Powder neutron diffraction of Y2TiNbO7-based samples was done. Refinement of the data for oxygen deficient Y2TiNbO6.76 indicates the presence of a distribution of oxygen over the 8b and 48f sites. Refinement of the data for oxygen rich Y2TiNbO7.5 shows these sites to be completely filled, with an additional half filling of the 8a site. The magnetic and TGA data strongly suggest a preference for a Ti3+/(Nb,Ta)5+ combination, as opposed to Ti4+/(Nb,Ta)4+, in this pyrochlore family. In addition, the evidence clearly points to Ti3+ as the source of the localized moments, with no evidence for localized Nb4+ moments.
We report a detailed study of structural and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore-type (Bi2-xPrx)Ru2O7 series. Eleven compositions with 0 <= x <= 2 were prepared by solid state reaction at 1050 degrees C and found to form a solid solution in the whole range of compositions. Structural refinements from X-ray powder diffraction data by the Rietveld method show that the main variation concerns the ruthenium site. Ru-O distances increase and the Ru-O-Ru angle (bridging corner-sharing Ru-O octahedra) decreases with increasing praseodymium content, in agreement with the metal-semiconductor transiti…
We report a structural and thermodynamic study of the "stuffed spin ice" material Ho2TiO5 (i.e., Ho2(Ti1.33Ho0.67)O6.67), comparing samples synthesized through two different routes. Neutron powder diffraction and electron diffraction reveal that the previously reported defect fluorite phase has short-range pyrochlore ordering, in that there are domains in which the Ho and Ho/Ti sublattices are distinct. By contrast, a sample prepared through a floating zone method has long range ordering of these sublattices. Despite the differences in crystal structures, the two versions of Ho2TiO5 display si…
Materials with formula of A2B2O7 is a famous family with more than 300 compounds, and have abundant properties, like ferroelectric, multiferroic, and photocatalyst properties, etc. Generally, two structures dominate this family, which are pyrochlore and perovskite-like layered (PL) structure. Previously, the structure and properties design of these materials are usually complex, and solid solutions, which complicates the manufacture, as well as introducing complexity in the study of the microscopic origins of the properties. Here, we report that the pyrochlore-PL structure change happened in p…
In this work a new empirical tolerance factor for compounds with pyrochlore structure is proposed. This suggested tolerance factor is based on experimental structural data and on the tolerance factors currently proposed. However, since it does not depend on the structural data, this new tolerance factor permits the prediction of some properties of these compounds directly. Also, a good structure stability field for the pyrochlore formation is observed when this tolerance factor is used.
Density Functional Theory calculations have been performed to obtain lattice parameters, elastic constants, and electronic properties of ideal pyrochlores with the composition A$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ (where A=La,Y and B=Ti,Sn,Hf, Zr). Some thermal properties are also inferred from the elastic properties. A decrease of the sound velocity (and thus, of the Debye temperature) with the atomic mass of the B ion is observed. Static and dynamical atomic charges are obtained to quantify the degree of covalency/ionicity. A large anomalous contribution to the dynamical charge is observed for Hf, Zr, and special…
Rare-earth pyrochlores, commonly exhibiting anomalously low lattice thermal conductivities, are considered as promising topcoat materials for thermal barrier coatings. However the structural origin underlying their low thermal conductivities remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the phonon properties of two groups of RE pyrochlores, Ln2Zr2O7 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Gd2T2O7 (T = Zr, Hf, Sn, Pb) employing density functional theory and quasi harmonic approximation. Through the relaxation time approximation (RTA) with Debye model, the thermal conductivities of those RE pyrochlore…
Polycrystalline Nd2Ru2O7 samples have been prepared and examined using a combination of structural, magnetic, and electrical and thermal transport studies. Analysis of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns suggests some site disorder on the A-site in the pyrochlore sublattice: Ru substitutes on the Nd-site up to 7.0(3)%, regardless of the different preparative conditions explored. Intrinsic magnetic and electrical transport properties have been measured. Ru 4d spins order antiferromagnetically at 143 K as seen both in susceptibility and specific heat, and there is a corresponding …
We report the ferroelectric property in Tb2Ti2O7 pyrochlore, prepared by a two-step solid-state reaction method. A concave P-E (polarisation vs electric field) loop observed from 382 K confirms ferroelectricity, below which the loop remains as pointed or banana-shaped. Dielectric plots clearly show an anomaly at 383 K and the magnetic data reveals a deviation from 380 K supporting the observed ferroelectric ordering. The origin of ferroelectricity in Tb2Ti2O7 is discussed which is due to the structural distortion in TiO6 octahedron.
The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of the Bi$_{2-y}$Sr$_{y}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ system was studied from 2 to 300 K. According to these measurements, the solid solution $(0\leq y\leq 0.9)$ does not show any magnetic transition; however, a noticeable deviation from the Curie-Weiss law occurs and the magnetic behavior of this system can be ascribed to short-range magnetic order that is also present in several geometrically frustrated systems. The Pauli magnetic susceptibility decreases as the Sr content increases, this can be associated with a shift towards Ir$^{5+}$ in samples; al…
Magnetization plateaus, visible as anomalies in magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures, are one of the hallmarks of frustrated magnetism. We show how an extremely robust half-magnetization plateau can arise from coupling between spin and lattice degrees of freedom in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet, and develop a detailed symmetry of analysis of the simplest possible scenario for such a plateau state. The application of this theory to the spinel oxides CdCr2O4 and HgCr2O4, where a robust half magnetization plateau has been observed, is discussed.
It is shown that both structural phase transitions in Cd2Re2O7, which occur at T_{s1}=200 K and T_{s2}=120 K, are due to an instability of the Re tetrahedral network with respect to the same doubly degenerate long-wavelength phonon mode. The primary structural order parameter transforms according to the irreducible representation E_u of the point group O_h. We argue that the transition at T_{s1} may be of second order, in accordance with experimental data. We obtain the phase diagram in the space of phenomenological parameters and propose a thermodynamic path that Cd2Re2O7 follows upon cooling…
We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magne…
Defect pyrochlore oxides have attracted a great interest as promising luminescent materials due to their flexible composition and high electron/hole mobility. In this work, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of lanthanide-doped (Ln) defect pyrochlore oxides \ce{KNbWO6}:0.125Ln$^{3+}$ by using first-principles calculations. We perform structural optimizations of various defect pyrochlore models and calculate their electronic structures, revealing that hydration has a significant influence on both local symmetry around Eu$^{3+}$ ion and band structures with an alteration of …
We report the growth of large high quality crystals of the frustrated magnet, Pr2Zr2O7 by the floating zone technique. Several crystals have been produced starting with varying levels of excess of Pr6O11 to compensate for the loss of Pr2O3 during the growth process. X-ray diffraction analysis of the crystals shows that the Pr composition in our crystals, as determined by the Pr site occupancy in the pyrochlore structure, is always slightly less than 1. Fits to the magnetic sus-ceptibility data below 10 K using a Curie-Weiss law reveal an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Pr moments, with …
We present here temperature-dependent Raman, x-ray diffraction and specific heat studies between room temperature and 12 K on single crystals of spin-ice pyrochlore compound $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and its non-magnetic analogue $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$. Raman data show a "new" band not predicted by factor group analysis of Raman-active modes for the pyrochlore structure in $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$, appearing below a temperature of $T_c=$110 K with a concomitant contraction of the cubic unit cell volume as determined from the powder x-ray diffraction analysis. Low temperature Raman experiments on O$^{18}$-isotope substituted …
Large single crystals of the pyrochlore Pr2Hf2O7 have been successfully grown by the floating zone technique using an optical furnace equipped with high power Xenon arc lamps. Structural investigations have been carried out by both synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction to establish the crystallographic structure of the materials produced. The magnetic properties of the single crystals have been determined for magnetic fields applied along different crystallographic axes. The results reveal that Pr2Hf2O7 is an interesting material for further investigations as a frustrated magnet. Th…
We have investigated the effect of synthesis and growth conditions on the magnetic, structural, and compositional properties of pyrochlore oxide holmium titanate and demonstrate a method for growing high quality stoichiometric single crystals. A series of polycrystalline samples with various contents of Ti (-0.08 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.08, and nominal compositions of Ho2Ti2+xO7) were synthesized at different temperatures, and characterized using powder X-ray diffraction. The results show that synthesizing powders at a higher temperature of 1500 °C yield single phase compounds. Ti deficient po…
Electronic properties of the metallic pyrochlore oxide Cd2Re2O7 are studied by means of electrical resistivity and Hall measurements. Semimetallic band structures are revealed as expected from band structure calculations. It is found that large changes in carrier density and mass occur at the structural phase transition at Ts1 = 200 K. A large mass enhancement is observed, particularly for the high-temperature phase with the ideal pyrochlore structure, suggesting that an anomalous correlation has an important effect on the itinerant electrons in the pyrochlore lattice.
We report the synthesis and structural study of mixed oxides in the Ln2ScNbO7 series. New phases with Ln = Pr, Eu, Gd and Dy are obtained. All crystallize in the cubic pyrochlore structure type, space group F-d3m, with no Sc-Nb ordering on the B-site. The structures are determined by Rietveld refinement. The evolution of cell parameters, interatomic distances and angles as a function of lanthanide cation size is discussed. Magnetic measurements show the absence of ordering down to 2 K, in agreement with the presence of strong geometric frustration in the lanthanide sublattice. The europium pha…
We report structural and magnetic properties studies of large high quality single-crystals of the frustrated magnet, Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. Powder x-ray diffraction analysis confirms that Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ adopts the pyrochlore structure. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction and time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments show that the crystals are stoichiometric in composition with no measurable site disorder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering at temperatures down to 0.5 K. Fits to the magnetic susceptibility data using a Curie-Weiss law reveal a…
The spinel oxides LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8 contain size-alternating pyrochlore lattices of spin-3/2 Cr3+ tetrahedra with different magnitudes of alternation. We show here that the solid solutions LiGa1-xInxCr4O8 between these two 'breathing' pyrochlore compounds display (i) rapid suppression of magnetic and structural transitions upon doping the end members, (ii) spin-glass-like freezing above 2 K in the range 0.1 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.6, and (iii) apparent spin-gap behavior for x $\gtrsim$ 0.7. Furthermore, no transitions are observed above 2 K at x ~ 0.9, where magnetic susceptibility rem…
The discovery of new topological electronic materials brings a chance to uncover novel physics and plays a key role in observing and controlling various intriguing phenomena. Up to now, many materials have been theoretically proposed and experimentally proved to host different kinds of topological states. Unfortunately, there is little convincing experimental evidence for the existence of topological oxides. The reason is that oxidation of oxygen leads to ionic crystal in general and makes band inversion unlikely. In addition, the realization of different topological states in a single materia…
Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic measurements were performed examining the 5d pyrochlore Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Temperature dependent measurements were performed between 3.4 K and 290 K, spanning the magnetic transition at 155 K. No sign of any structural or disorder induced phase transition was observed over the entire temperature range. In addition, no sign of magnetic long-range order was observed to within the sensitivity of the instrumentation. These measurements do not rule out long range magnetic order, but the neutron powder diffraction structural refinements do put an upper bound f…
RbOs2O6, the third superconducting pyrochlore oxide (known so far), has been synthesized by encapsulation and by high pressure techniques. Suitable post chemical treatment of the as-prepared sample allowed us to eliminate the impurity phases. Bulk superconductivity with Tc=6.4 K was observed in magnetisation and specific heat measurements. The transition temperature of RbOs2O6 was found to be the same for both preparation methods. Structural investigations showed that Rb atoms occupy the 8b site in the pyrochlore lattice with a lattice parameter of 10.1137(1) A.
We report the systematic study of structural, magnetic and electrical transport properties of $Y_{2-x}Bi_xIr_2O_7$ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) pyrochlore iridates. The chemical doping enhances electrical conductivity and antiferromagnetic correlation substantially. The replacement of non-magnetic $Y^{3+}$ ion with non-magnetic $Bi^{3+}$ in $Y_2Ir_2O_7$ tends to reduce the octahedral distortion thus enhancing the antiferromagnetic correlation. Raman spectroscopy shows that the $Ir-O$ bond contract slightly and the $R-O'$ bond turn longer as disorder and phononic oscillation are reduced with $Bi$ d…
Spin ice materials are the model systems that have a zero-point entropy as \textit{T} $\rightarrow$ 0 K, owing to the frozen disordered states. Here, we chemically alter the well-known spin ice Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by replacing Ti sites with isovalent but larger Zr ion. Unlike the Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ which is a pyrochlore material, Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ crystallizes in disordered pyrochlore structure. We have performed detailed structural, ac magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies on Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ to investigate the interplay of structural disorder and frustrated …
Pyrochlore erbium titanate samples in the form of powders (with nominal compositions of Er2Ti2+xO7) and bulk single crystals were prepared to elucidate the effect of synthesis and growth conditions on their composition, structure, and transition temperature. All samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and specific heat measurements. Larger lattice parameters were measured for the Ti-deficient stuffed powders, Er2(Ti2-xErx)O7-δ, while Ti-rich anti-stuffed powders, (Er2-xTix)Ti2O7+δ, showed a decrease in lattice parameter. The lattice parameter for the stoichiometrically synthesized p…
Search of new frustrated magnetic systems is of a significant importance for physics studying the condensed matter. The platform for geometric frustration of magnetic systems can be provided by copper oxocentric tetrahedra (OCu4) forming the base of crystalline structures of copper minerals from Tolbachik volcanos in Kamchatka. The present work was devoted to a new frustrated antiferromagnetic - kamchatkite (KCu3OCl(SO4)2). The calculation of the sign and strength of magnetic couplings in KCu3OCl(SO4)2 has been performed on the basis of structural data by the phenomenological crystal chemistry…
A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8. Because of the large size mismatch between Li+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr3+ ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor Bf, which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: Bf is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectivel…
A new charge-ordered magnetically frustrated mixed-metal fluoride with a pyrochlore-related structure has been synthesized and characterized. The material, RbFe2F6 (RbFe2+Fe3+F6) was synthesized through mild hydrothermal conditions. The material exhibits a three-dimensional pyrochlore-related structure consisting of corner-shared Fe2+F6 and Fe3+F6 octahedra. In addition to single crystal diffraction data, neutron powder diffraction and magnetometry measurements were carried out. Magnetic data clearly reveal strong antiferromagnetic interactions (a Curie-Weiss temperature of -270 K) but suffici…
We have synthesised ceramic specimens of the tetragonal tungsten bronze K3Li2Ta5O15 (KLT) and characterized its phase transition via X-ray, dielectric permittivity, ultrasonic spectroscopy and heat capacity measurements. The space group of KLT is reported as both P4/mbm or Cmmm with the orthorhombic distortion occurring when there are higher partial pressures of volatile K and Li used within the closed crucibles for the solid state synthesis. The data show strong relaxor behaviour, with the temperature at which the two dielectric relative permittivity peaks decreasing with 104 K $\geqslant$ Tm…
We present synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the rare earth pyrochlore oxide Nd2Zr2O7 to study the ordered state magnetic structure and cystal field states. The structural characterization by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction confirms that the pyrochlore structure has no detectable O vacancies or Nd/Zr site mixing. The neutron diffraction reveals long range all-in/all-out antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 0.4 K with propagation vector k = (0 0 0) and an ordered moment of 1.26(2) μ_B/Nd at 0.1 …
Pyrochlore $\rm Pr^{3+}_{2+x}Zr^{4+}_{2-x}O_{7-x/2}$ samples in the form of both powders $(-0.02 \le x \le 0.02)$ and bulk single crystals have been studied to elucidate the dependence of their magnetic, compositional and structural properties on synthesis and growth conditions. All samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction, specific heat, and DC magnetization measurements. The crystals were also studied using the X-ray Laue technique and scanning electron microscopy. Increasing the Pr content for the $\rm Pr_{2+x}Zr_{2-x}O_{7-x/2}$ powders enlarged the lattice parameter, and resulted…
Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.…
We report on the epitaxial growth, structural and electrical properties of metallic pyrochlore bismuth ruthenate heterostructures grown along both the [001] and [111] directions. Ordered pyrochlore thin films were obtained with highly oriented texture along the [001] and [111] crystallographic directions. Density functional theory calculations of the electronic band structure and density of states indicated that Bi$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is semimetallic and that hybridization of the Ru 4$d$ and Bi 6$p$ orbitals via the anion network at the Fermi energy was responsible for the metallicity. Electrical c…
We overview the basic concepts, models, and methods related to the multi-field continuum theory of solids with complex structures. The multi-field theory is formulated for structural solids by introducing a macrocell consisting of several primitive cells and, accordingly, by increasing the number of vector fields describing the response of the body to external factors. Using this approach, we obtain several continuum models and explore their essential properties by comparison with the original structural models. Static and dynamical problems as well as the stability problems for structural sol…
Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 is unique among breathing pyrochlore compounds for being in the nearly decoupled limit where inter-tetrahedron interactions are weak, hosting isolated clusters or "molecular magnet" like tetrahedra of magnetic ytterbium (Yb3+) ions. In this work, we present the first study carried out on single-crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11, using a variety of magnetometry and neutron scattering techniques along with theoretical modeling. We employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic dynamics as a function of applied field (with respect to both magni…
The pyrochlore oxides Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ are well studied spin ice systems and have shown the evidences of magnetic monopole excitations. Unlike these, Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is reported to crystallize in a distorted fluorite structure. We present here the magnetic and heat capacity studies of La substituted Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our findings suggest the absence of spin ice state in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ but the emergence of the magnetic field induced spin freezing near T $\approx$ 10 K in ac susceptibility measurements which is similar to Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}…
Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ a disordered pyrochlore system, exhibits the spin ice freezing under the application of magnetic field. Our studies suggest the stabilization of pyrochlore phase in Dy$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with the substitution of nonmagnetic La, along with the biphasic mixture for the intermediate compositions. We observed that the higher La compositions (1.5 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.9), show spin freezing (T $\sim$ 17 K) similar to the field induced spin ice freezing for low La compositions (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.5), and the well known spin ice systems Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$…
The singlet ground state magnetism in pyrochlore osmates Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ is studied by DC and AC susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction measurements. Despite the expected non-magnetic singlet in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit for Os$^{4+}$ ($5d^4$), Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ exhibits a spin-glass (SG) ground state below 4 K with weak magnetism, suggesting possible proximity to a quantum phase transition between the non-magnetic state in the strong SOC limit and the magnetic state in the strong superexchange limit. Ho$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$ has the same …
Successive ferroelectric orders and magnetoelectric coupling without long-range magnetic order in highly frustrated pyrochlore compounds: Sm$_2$Ti$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_7$
Using a coarse molecular-dynamics (CMD) approach with an appropriate choice of coarse variable (order parameter), we map the underlying effective free-energy landscape for the melting of a crystalline solid. Implementation of this approach provides a means for constructing effective free-energy landscapes of structural transitions in condensed matter. The predictions of the approach for the thermodynamic melting point of a model silicon system are in excellent agreement with those of ''traditional'' techniques for melting-point calculations, as well as with literature values.
Scientific study of the effect of structural memory of nonequilibrium defective solids about the processing in magnetic field (the magnetic structural effect (MSE) was continued in this paper. The study was aimed to reveal the universal nature of the MSE, which was investigated in several new nonequilibrium defective solids. The results of investigation of the processing in the vortical magnetic field (PVMF) and its effect on the structure of the natural magnetite Fe3O4 and the SnO2 films were presented. The methods of Mössbauer and X-ray spectroscopy were used. The PVMF reduction of a de…
Structural correlations at a liquid-solid interface were explored with molecular dynamics simulations of a model aluminium system using the Ercolessi-Adams potential and up to 4320 atoms. Substrate atoms were pinned to their equilibrium crystalline positions while liquid atoms were free to move. The density profile at the interface was investigated for different substrate crystallographic orientations and temperatures. An exponential decay of the density profile was observed, $ρ(z) \sim \rm{e}^{- κz}$, leading to the definition of $κ$ as a quantitative measure of the ordering at the liquid sol…
When two chemically passivated solids are brought into contact, interfacial interactions between the solids compete with intrabulk elastic forces. The relative importance of these interactions, which are length-scale dependent, will be estimated using scaling arguments. If elastic interactions dominate on all length scales, solids will move as essentially rigid objects. This would imply superlow kinetic friction in UHV, provided wear was absent. The results of the scaling study depend on the symmetry of the surfaces and the dimensionalities of interface and solids. Some examples are discussed …
We follow the structural transformation in solid C$_{70}$ from the high temperature hcp to a low temperature monoclinic phase using x-ray diffraction studies at controlled cooling-rates from 0.0033 to 0.42 K/min. Rapid cooling of the sample gives the signature of a two-step transformation which disappears when the system is transformaed quasi-statically. These experimental results can be rationalised using a simple mean field, Langevin dynamical theory using a free energy functional with minima corresponding to the parent and two competing product phases such that one of these product phases r…
We study equilibrium properties of a system of particles in two dimensions, interacting with pair and three body potentials, which undergoes a structural transition from a square to a rhombic lattice and thus constitutes a simple model for a generic tetragonal to orthorhombic transition. We aim at an intermediate level of description lying in-between that of coarse grained elastic strain hamiltonians and microscopic ab-initio approaches. Macroscopic thermodynamic properties and phase diagram at zero and finite temperatures as a function of the density and the relative strengths of the pair and…
In this letter, we report the structural, elastic, and quasiparticle band structure of cynauric triazide. The structural properties using a dispersion corrected method to treat van der Waals (vdW) forces offers a significant improvement in the description of the ground state properties. The predicted bulk modulus from the equation of state and the elastic constants are consistent and the magnitude lies in the order of secondary explosives. Then, the G$_0$W$_0$ approximation is used to study the band structure and an indirect band gap of 6.33 eV is obtained. Finally, we have calculated the opti…
Solid solutions of (1-x)LaFeO3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<1) have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. These complex perovskites have been studied by means of X-ray (XRPD) and neutron powder (NPD) diffraction, complemented with dielectric, magnetic, heat capacity and Mössbauer measurements. Complete solubility in the perovskite series was demonstrated. The NPD and XRPD patterns were successfully refined as orthorhombic (x \leq 0.7) and tetragonal (x \geq 0.8). A composition-driven phase transformation occurs within the interval 0.7<x<0.8. The samples with x<0.5 showed evidence of long-range…
Neutron diffraction studies as a function of temperature on solid solutions of MnSe and MnTe in the Se rich region are presented. Interestingly as Te is doped in MnSe, the structural transformation to NiAs phase diminishes, both in terms of \% fraction of compound as well as in terms of transition temperature. In MnTe$_{0.3}$Se$_{0.7}$, the NaCl to NiAs phase transformation occurs at about 40K and although it is present at room temperature in MnTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, its volume fraction is only about 10\% of the total volume of sample. The magnetic ordering temperature of the cubic phase decrea…
