The pyrochlore oxides Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ are well studied spin ice systems and have shown the evidences of magnetic monopole excitations. Unlike these, Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is reported to crystallize in a distorted fluorite structure. We present here the magnetic and heat capacity studies of La substituted Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Our findings suggest the absence of spin ice state in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ but the emergence of the magnetic field induced spin freezing near T $\approx$ 10 K in ac susceptibility measurements which is similar to Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The magnetic heat capacity of Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ shows a shift in the peak position from 1.2 K in zero field to higher temperatures in the magnetic field, with the corresponding decrease in the magnetic entropy. The low temperature magnetic entropy at 5 kOe field is Rln2 - (1/2)Rln(3/2) which is same as for the spin ice state. Substitution of non-magnetic, isovalent La$^{3+}$ for Dy$^{3+}$ gradually induces the structural change from highly disordered fluorite to weakly ordered pyrochlore phase. The La$^{3+}$ substituted compounds with less distorted pyrochlore phase show the spin freezing at lower field which strengthens further on the application of magnetic field. Our results suggest that the spin ice state can be stabilized in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ either by slowing down of the spin dynamics or by strengthening the pyrochlore phase by suitable substitution in the system.
We report the low-temperature magnetothermal properties and spin dynamics of a mixed pyrochlore, Dy2GaSbO7 through the coordination of measurements of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and heat capacity, and CF computation. In Dy2GaSbO7, the spins freeze at temperature Tice = 3.1 K, corresponding to dynamical spin-freezing into a disordered state in compliance with the spin-ice rules, but with enhanced zero-point entropy, unlike cannonical dipolar spin-ice materials, Dy2Ti2O7 and Ho2Ti2O7, due to random disorder and varied chemical pressure of B-site (GaSb tetrahedra) ions.
A novel macroscopically degenerate state called kagome ice, which was recently found in a spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field applied along the [111] direction of the cubic unit cell, is studied by specific heat measurements. The residual entropy of the kagome ice is estimated to be 0.65 J/K mol Dy, which is nearly 40 % of that for the tetrahedral spin ice obtained in a zero field (1.68 J/K mol Dy) and is in good agreement with a theoretical prediction. It is also reported that the kagom ice state, which is stabilized at a range of magnetic field of 0.3 ~ 0.6 T, is a 'gas' phase and…
Spin crossover molecules have two accessible states: high spin (HS) and low spin (LS). We show that, on the pyrochlore lattice, elastic interactions between SCO molecules can give rise to three spin-state ice phases. Each is a ``Coulomb phase'' where a local ice-rule can be mapped to a divergence free gauge field and the low energy excitations carry a spin fractionalized midway between the LS and HS states. The unique nature of spin crossover materials allows temperature to change the ice rules allowing straightforward access to Coulomb phases not yet observed in water or spin ices.
A formation of tetrahedral spin clusters is discovered by Monte Carlo simulation for a spin-ice type double-exchange model on a pyrochlore lattice. The spin-cluster phase is magnetically disordered, but breaks spatial inversion symmetry spontaneously by developing noncoplanar four-spin molecules periodically on the pyrochlore lattice. We find that the system exhibits a nonzero spin Hall conductivity in the spin-cluster phase. The result suggests that an intersite-multipole order induces the unconventional spin Hall state without the spin-orbit interaction.
We study the U(1) quantum spin liquid on the pyrochlore spin ice systems. For the non-Kramers doublets such as Pr$^{3+}$ and Tb$^{3+}$, we point out that the inelastic neutron scattering not only detects the low-energy gauge photon, but also contains the continuum of the "magnetic monopole" excitations. Unlike the spinons, these "magnetic monopoles" are purely of quantum origin and have no classical analogue. We further point out that the "magnetic monopole" experiences a background dual "$π$" flux due to the spin-1/2 nature of the local moment when the "monopole" hops on the dual diamond latt…
We point out the experimental relevance and the detection scheme of symmetry enriched U(1) quantum spin liquids (QSLs) outside the perturbative spin-ice regime. Recent experiments on Ce-based pyrochlore QSL materials suggest that the candidate QSL may not be proximate to the well-known spin ice regime, and thus differs fundamentally from other pyrochlore QSL materials. We consider the possibility of the $π$-flux U(1) QSL favored by frustrated transverse exchange interactions rather than the usual quantum spin ice. It was previously suggested that both dipolar U(1) QSL and octupolar U(1) QSL ca…
Quantum spin ice, modeled for magnetic rare-earth pyrochlores, has attracted great interest for hosting a U(1) quantum spin liquid, which involves spin-ice monopoles as gapped deconfined spinons, as well as gapless excitations analogous to photons. However, the global phase diagram under a [111] magnetic field remains open. Here we uncover by means of unbiased quantum Monte-Carlo simulations that a supersolid of monopoles, showing both a superfluidity and a partial ionization, intervenes the kagomé spin ice and a fully ionized monopole insulator, in contrast to classical spin ice where a direc…
The Coulombic quantum spin liquid in quantum spin ice is an exotic quantum phase of matter that emerges on the pyrochlore lattice and is currently actively searched for. Motivated by recent experiments on the Yb-based breathing pyrochlore material Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$, we theoretically study the phase diagram and magnetic properties of the relevant spin model. The latter takes the form of a quantum spin ice Hamiltonian on a breathing pyrochlore lattice, and we analyze the stability of the quantum spin liquid phase in the absence of the inversion symmetry which the lattice breaks explicit…
Quantum spin ice in pyrochlore lattice exemplifies three dimensional frustrated spin systems. In existing studies, Bose-Einstein condensation of bosonic spinons gives rise to magnetically ordered ground state.A truly liquid quantum spin superfluid state that manifests a deconfined Higgs condensate of spinons is demonstrated. This state is shown to occur in the fully antiferromagnetic case of the non-Kramers quantum spin ice with a fluctuations-induced first-order quantum phase transition from the $U(1)$ spin liquid to the spin superfluid. The spin superfluid density jump is obtained analytically.
We study quantum antiferromagnetism on the highly frustrated checkerboard lattice, also known as the square lattice with crossings. The quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on this lattice is of interest as a two-dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice magnet. By combining several approaches we conclude that this system is most likely ordered for all values of spin, $S$, with a Neel state for large $S$ giving way to a two-fold degenerate valence-bond solid for smaller $S$. We show next that the Ising antiferromagnet with a weak four-spin exchange, equivalent to square ice with the leading q…
We study the magnetic field effects on the diluted spin-ice materials using the replica-exchange Monte Carlo simulation. We observe five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted nearest-neighbor spin-ice model on the pyrochlore lattice when a magnetic field is applied in the [111] direction. This is in contrast to the case of the pure model with two plateaus. The origin of five plateaus is investigated from the spin configuration of two corner-sharing tetrahedra in the case of the diluted model.
Pyrochlore iridates and pyrochlore ices are two families of materials where novel quantum phenomena are intertwined with strong spin-orbit coupling, substantial electron correlation and geometrical frustration. Motivated by the puzzling experiments on two pyrochlore systems Pr2Ir2O7 and Yb2Ti2O7, we study the proximate Ising orders and the quantum phase transition out of quantum spin ice U(1) quantum spin liquid (QSL). We apply the electromagnetic duality of the compact quantum electrodynamics to analyze the "magnetic monopoles" condensation for U(1) QSL. The monopole condensation transition r…
We report experimental signatures of topological transitions among the Weyl semimetal states of pyrochlore Pr2Ir2O7, where the Kondo coupling between the Ir topological electrons and the spin-ice like orders of Pr moments plays a decisive role. The magnetic-field dependence of resistivity and the Hall conductivity exhibits a plateau and a sharp jump associated with a magnetic-field hysteresis, similar to a liquid-gas-like transition in dipolar spin ice system. Furthermore, the Kondo coupling is controlled by the hydrostatic pressure, revealing that the field-induced displacement of Weyl points…
We study the low-temperature physics of the $SU(2)$-symmetric spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice and find fingerprint evidence for the thermal spin-ice state in this frustrated quantum magnet. Our conclusions are based on the results of bold diagrammatic Monte Carlo simulations, with good convergence of the skeleton series down to the temperature $T/J=1/6$. The identification of the spin-ice state is done through a remarkably accurate microscopic correspondence for the static structure factor between the quantum Heisenberg, classical Heisenberg, and Ising models at a…
We report the low temperature magnetic properties of the pyrochlore Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$. Polycrystalline and single-crystal samples are investigated using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and macroscopic measurements, respectively. The crystal-field splitting produces a non-Kramers doublet ground state for Pr$^{3+}$, with Ising-like anisotropy. Below 0.5 K ferromagnetic correlations develop, which suggests that the system enters a spin ice-like state associated with the metamagnetic behavior observed at $μ_0H_c\sim2.4$~T. In this regime, the development of a discrete inelastic excitation in t…
We study a spin-ice Kondo lattice model on a breathing pyrochlore lattice with classical localized spins. The highly efficient kernel polynomial expansion method, together with a classical Monte Carlo method, is employed in order to study the magnetic phase diagram at four representative values of the number density of itinerant electrons. We tune the breathing mode by varying the hopping ratio -- the ratio of hopping parameters for itinerant electrons along inequivalent paths. Several interesting magnetic phases are stabilized in the phase diagram parameterized by the hopping ratio, Kondo cou…
Spin ice materials are the model systems that have a zero-point entropy as \textit{T} $\rightarrow$ 0 K, owing to the frozen disordered states. Here, we chemically alter the well-known spin ice Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ by replacing Ti sites with isovalent but larger Zr ion. Unlike the Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ which is a pyrochlore material, Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ crystallizes in disordered pyrochlore structure. We have performed detailed structural, ac magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity studies on Ho$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ to investigate the interplay of structural disorder and frustrated …

We propose that in a certain class of magnetic materials, known as non-Kramers 'spin ice,' disorder induces quantum entanglement. Instead of driving glassy behavior, disorder provokes quantum superpositions of spins throughout the system, and engenders an associated emergent gauge structure and set of fractional excitations. More precisely, disorder transforms a classical phase governed by a large entropy, classical spin ice, into a quantum spin liquid governed by entanglement. As the degree of disorder is increased, the system transitions between (i) a "regular" Coulombic spin liquid, (ii) a …
Pyrochlores offer an ideal playground to investigate the magnetic ground state of frustrated magnetic systems. In this class of materials, competition between various magnetic interactions remains frustrated and prevents an ordered magnetic state at low temperatures. Tb2Sn2O7 has recently attracted significant attention due to its ordered spin-ice state. Additionally, in such systems, application of external magnetic field might result in exotic magnetic states. Our current investigation on Tb2Sn2O7 reveal the presence of a new phase associated with fifth order susceptibility at low temperatur…
The recent discovery of Spin-ice is a spectacular example of non-coplanar spin arrangements that can arise in the pyrochlore A2B2O7 structure. We present magnetic and thermodynamic studies on the metallic-ferromagnet pyrochlore Sm2Mo2O7. Our studies, carried out on oriented crystals, suggest that the Sm spins have an ordered spin-ice ground state below about T* = 15 K. The temperature- and field-evolution of the ordered spin-ice state are governed by an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Sm and Mo spins. We propose that as a consequence of a robust feature of this coupling, the tetrahedra …
The spin ice materials, including Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7, are rare earth pyrochlore magnets which, at low temperatures, enter a constrained paramagnetic state with an emergent gauge freedom. Remarkably, the spin ices provide one of very few experimentally realised examples of fractionalization because their elementary excitations can be regarded as magnetic monopoles and, over some temperature range, the spin ice materials are best described as liquids of these emergent charges. In the presence of quantum fluctuations, one can obtain, in principle, a quantum spin liquid descended from the class…

We consider a class of d- and f-electron systems in which dipolar-octupolar Kramers doublets arise on the sites of the pyrochlore lattice. For such doublets, two components of the pseudospin transform like a magnetic dipole, while the other transforms like a component of the magnetic octupole tensor. Based on a symmetry analysis, we construct and study models of dipolar-octupolar doublets in itinerant and localized limits. In both limits, the resulting models are of surprisingly simple form. In the itinerant limit, we find topological insulating behavior. In the localized limit, the most gener…
We present a first-principles investigation of the spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ using a magnetic source-free exchange and correlation functional, implemented in the Castep electronic-structure code. By comparing results from the conventional local spin-density approximation, we show that a spin-ice state in Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can be reliably obtained by removing the magnetic sources from the exchange and correlation contributions to the potential, and we contrast this against the computed ground states of other frustrated pyrochlore magnets.
Multipolar magnetism is an emerging field of quantum materials research. The building blocks of multipolar phenomena are magnetic ions with a non-Kramers doublet, where the orbital and spin degrees of freedom are inextricably intertwined, leading to unusual spin-orbital entangled states. The detection of such subtle forms of matter has, however, been difficult due to a limited number of appropriate experimental tools. In this work, motivated by a recent magnetostriction experiment on Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, we theoretically investigate how multipolar quantum spin ice, an elusive three dimensional q…
We investigate the transport properties of itinerant electrons interacting with a background of localized spins in a correlated paramagnetic phase of the pyrochlore lattice. We find a residual resistivity at zero temperature due to the scattering of electrons by the static dipolar spin-spin correlation that characterizes the metallic Coulomb phase. As temperature increases, thermally excited topological defects, also known as magnetic monopoles, reduce the spin correlation, hence suppressing electron scattering. Combined with the usual scattering processes in metals at higher temperatures, thi…
We present high-resolution single crystal time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on the candidate quantum spin liquid pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7 at low temperature and in a magnetic field. At ~70 mK and in zero field, Tb2Ti2O7 reveals diffuse magnetic elastic scattering at (1/2,1/2,1/2) positions in reciprocal space, consistent with short-range correlated regions based on a two-in, two-out spin ice configuration on a doubled conventional unit cell. This elastic scattering is separated from very low-energy magnetic inelastic scattering by an energy gap of ~0.06-0.08 meV. The elastic signal dis…
From a microscopic model for the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Sn2O7, including the crystal field Hamiltonian and interactions between the angular momenta, we compute an effective pseudospin-1/2 Hamiltonian Heff$ that incorporates perturbatively in the effective interactions the effect of excited crystal field levels. We obtain the semiclassical ground states of Heff and find a region of parameter space with a two-in/two-out spin ice configuration on each tetrahedron with ordering wavevector q=0 and with spins canted away from the local Ising axes as found in Tb2Sn2O7. This ground state can al…
We study the pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with additional positive biquadratic interaction in the semiclassical limit. The classical ground state manifold of the model contains an extensively large family of non-coplanar spin states known as "color ice states". Starting from a color ice state, a subset of spins may rotate collectively at no energy cost. Such excitation may be viewed in this three-dimensional system as a "membrane-like" analog of the well-known weathervane modes in the classical kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We investigate the weathervane modes in detail and eluci…
Quantum spin liquids (QSL) have generated considerable excitement as phases of matter with emergent gauge structures and fractionalized excitations. In this context, phase transitions out of QSLs have been widely discussed as Higgs transitions from deconfined to confined phases of a lattice gauge theory. However the possibility of a wider range of novel phases, occuring between these two limits, has yet to be systematically explored. In this Letter, we develop a formalism which allows for interactions between fractionalised quasiparticles coming from the constraint on the physical Hilbert spac…
The search for new quantum phases, especially in frustrated magnets, is central to modern condensed matter physics. One of the most promising places to look is in rare-earth pyrochlore magnets with highly-anisotropic exchange interactions, materials closely related to the spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7. Here we establish a general theory of magnetic order in these materials. We find that many of their most interesting properties can be traced back to the accidental degeneracies where phases with different symmetry meet. These include the ordered ground state selection by fluctuations in Er2Ti…
Neutron scattering measurements on the pyrochlore magnet Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ reveal an unusual crystal field splitting of its lowest $J$=5/2 multiplet, such that its ground state doublet is composed of m$_J$=$\pm$3/2, giving these doublets a dipole - octupole (DO) character with local Ising anisotropy. Its magnetic susceptibility shows weak antiferromagnetic correlations with $θ_{CW}$=-0.4(2)K, leading to a naive expectation of an All-In, All-Out ordered state at low temperatures. Instead our low energy inelastic neutron scattering measurements show a dynamic quantum spin ice state, with suppres…
We have successfully grown cm3-size single crystals of the metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7 by the floating-zone method using an infrared-red image furnace. The growth difficulties and the remedies found using a 2-mirror image furnace are discussed. Magnetization studies along the three crystalline axes of the compound are presented and discussed based on our recent proposal of an ordered spin-ice ground state for this compound
We study Ising pyrochlores by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We cover a set of exchange constants ranging from the frustrated ferromagnetic case (spin-ice) to the fully-ordered "all-in--all-out" antiferromagnet in the dipolar model, reinterpreting the results --as in an ionic system-- in terms of a temperature vs. magnetic charge density phase diagram. In spite of its spin nature and the presence of both double and single non-conserved magnetic charges, the dipolar model gives place to a phase diagram which is quite comparable with those previously obtained for on-lattice systems of electri…
The single ion physics of Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is well-understood to produce strong Ising anisotropy, which is an essential ingredient to its low-temperature spin ice state. We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ that reveal a clear inconsistency with its established single ion Hamiltonian. Specifically, we show that a crystal field doublet near 60~meV is split by approximately 3~meV. Furthermore, this crystal field splitting is not isolated to Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ but can also be found in its chemical pressure analogs, Ho$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$. We d…
We use numerical linked cluster (NLC) expansions to compute the specific heat, C(T), and entropy, S(T), of a quantum spin ice model of Yb2Ti2O7 using anisotropic exchange interactions recently determined from inelastic neutron scattering measurements and find good agreement with experimental calorimetric data. In the perturbative weak quantum regime, this model has a ferrimagnetic ordered ground state, with two peaks in C(T): a Schottky anomaly signalling the paramagnetic to spin ice crossover followed at lower temperature by a sharp peak accompanying a first order phase transition to the ferr…
Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipol…
MuSR experiments have been performed on powder sample of the "ordered spin ice" Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore compound. At base temperature (T=35mK) the muon relaxation is found to be of dynamical nature which demonstrates that strong fluctuations persist below the ferromagnetic transition (T_C=0.87K). Hints of long range order appear as oscillations of the muon polarization when an external field is applied and also as a hysteretic behavior below T_C. We propose a dynamical and strongly correlated scenario where dynamics results from fluctuation of large spin clusters with the "ordered spin ic…
The mathematics of gauge theories lies behind many of the most profound advances in physics in the last 200 years, from Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism to Einstein's theory of general relativity. More recently it has become clear that gauge theories also emerge in condensed matter, a prime example being the spin ice materials which host an emergent electromagnetic gauge field. In spin ice, the underlying gauge structure is revealed by the presence of pinch-point singularities in neutron-scattering measurements. Here we report the discovery of a spin liquid where the low-temperature physic…
There is a growing interest in the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid in both quantum materials in pyrochlore ice and cluster Mott insulators and cold atom systems. We explore a paired hardcore boson model on a pyrochlore lattice. This model is equivalent to the XYZ spin model that was proposed for rare-earth pyrochlores with "dipole-octupole" doublets. Since this model has no sign problem for quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations in a large parameter regime, we carry out both analytical and QMC calculations. We find that the $U(1)$ Coulomb liquid is quite stable and spans a rather large portion of the pha…
We study the $S=1/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field. Using large scale density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations for clusters up to $128$ spins, we find indications for a finite triplet gap, causing a threshold field to nonzero magnetization in the magnetization curve. We obtain a robust saturation field consistent with a magnon crystal, although the corresponding $5/6$ magnetization plateau is very slim and possibly unstable. Most remarkably, there is a pronounced and apparently robust $\frac 1 2$ magnetization plateau where the groundstate breaks (re…
While there is compelling evidence for the existence of magnetic monopoles in spin ice, the direct observation of a point-like source of magnetic field in these systems remains an open challenge. One promising approach is electron holography, which combines atomic-scale resolution with extreme sensitivity to magnetic vector potentials, through the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Here we explore what holography can teach us about magnetic monopoles in spin ice, through experiments on artificial spin ice, and numerical simulations of pyrochlore spin ice. In the case of artificial spin ice, we show that ho…
A quantum spin liquid is a novel state of matter characterized by quantum entanglement and the absence of any broken symmetry. In condensed matter, the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore magnets Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, so-called spin ices, exhibit a classical spin liquid state with fractionalized thermal excitations (magnetic monopoles). Evidence for a quantum spin ice, in which the magnetic monopoles become long range entangled and an emergent quantum electrodynamics arises, seems within reach. The magnetic properties of the quantum spin ice candidate Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have elu…
Ising models on a pyrochlore oxide lattice are usually associated with spin ice materials and "magnetic monopoles". Ever more often effects connecting magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom are reported on these and other related frustrated materials. Here we extend a spin-ice Hamiltonian to include coupling between spins and the O$^{-2}$ ions mediating superexchange; we call it the Magnetoelastic Spin Ice model (MeSI). There has been a long search for a model in which monopoles would spontaneously become the building blocks of new ground-states: the MeSI Hamiltonian is such a model. In spite…
We present the benchmark of the polynomial expansion Monte Carlo method to a Kondo lattice model with classical localized spins on a geometrically frustrated lattice. The method enables to reduce the calculation amount by using the Chebyshev polynomial expansion of the density of states compared to a conventional Monte Carlo technique based on the exact diagonalization of the fermion Hamiltonian matrix. Further reduction is brought by a real-space truncation of the vector-matrix operations. We apply the method to the model with spin-ice type Ising spins on a three-dimensional pyrochlore lattic…
Quantum spin ice materials, pyrochlore magnets with competing Ising and transverse exchange interactions, have been widely discussed as candidates for a quantum spin-liquid ground state. Here, motivated by quantum chemical calculations for Pr pyrochlores, we present the results of a study for frustrated transverse exchange. Using a combination of variational calculations, exact diagonalisation, numerical linked-cluster and series expansions, we find that the previously-studied U(1) quantum spin liquid, in its pi-flux phase, transforms into a nematic quantum spin liquid at a high-symmetry, SU(2…
We study an effective spin model derived perturbatively from random transverse-field Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice. The model consists of spin-configurations on the pyrochlore lattice, restricted to the spin-ice subspace, with spins interacting with random Ising exchange couplings as well as ring exchanges along the hexagons of the lattice. This model is studied by exact diagonalization upto N=64 site systems. We calculate spin-glass correlation functions and local entanglement entropy $S_T$ between spins in a single tetrahedron and the rest of the system. We find that the model underg…
We present a mechanism of resistivity minimum in conduction electron systems coupled with localized moments, which is distinguished from the Kondo effect. Instead of the spin-flip process in the Kondo effect, electrons are elastically scattered by local spin correlations which evolve in a particular way under geometrical frustration as decreasing temperature. This is demonstrated by the cellular dynamical mean-field theory for a spin-ice type Kondo lattice model on a pyrochlore lattice. Peculiar temperature dependences of the resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility in the non-K…
