A new charge-ordered magnetically frustrated mixed-metal fluoride with a pyrochlore-related structure has been synthesized and characterized. The material, RbFe2F6 (RbFe2+Fe3+F6) was synthesized through mild hydrothermal conditions. The material exhibits a three-dimensional pyrochlore-related structure consisting of corner-shared Fe2+F6 and Fe3+F6 octahedra. In addition to single crystal diffraction data, neutron powder diffraction and magnetometry measurements were carried out. Magnetic data clearly reveal strong antiferromagnetic interactions (a Curie-Weiss temperature of -270 K) but sufficient frustration to prevent ordering until 16 K. No structural phase transformation is detected from the variable temperature neutron diffraction data. Infrared, UV -vis, thermogravimetric, and differential thermal analysis measurements were also performed. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were also done. Crystal data: RbFe2F6, orthorhombic, space group Pnma (No. 62), a = 7.0177(6) Å, b = 7.4499(6) Å, c = 10.1765(8) Å, V = 532.04(8) Å3, Z = 4.
We present time-of-flight neutron total scattering and polarized neutron scattering measurements of the magnetically frustrated compounds NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$ and NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$, which belong to a class of recently discovered pyrochlore compounds based on transition metals and fluorine. The magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) technique is used to analyze and model the total scattering data in real space. We find that a previously-proposed model of short-range XY-like correlations with a length scale of 10-15 Å, combined with nearest-neighbor collinear antiferromagnetic correlations, accurat…
We report the crystal growth, crystal structure and basic magnetic properties of a new cobalt-based pyrochlore, NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$. Na and Sr are completely disordered on the non-magnetic large atom A sites, while magnetic S=3/2 Co$^{2+}$ fully occupies the pyrochlore lattice B sites. This system exhibits an isotropic magnetic susceptibility with strong antiferromagnetic interactions ($θ_{CW}$ = -127(1)), a large effective moment (${ρ_{eff}}$ = 5.9(1) ${μ_B}$/Co) and no spin freezing until 3 K. Thus NaSrCo$_2$F$_7$ is a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet with a frustration index f = -${θ_{C…
We investigate the connection between highly frustrated kagome based Hamiltonians and a recently synthesized family of materials containing Ti3+ S=1/2 ions. Employing a combination of all electron density functional theory and numerical diagonalization techniques, we establish the Heisenberg Hamiltonians for the distorted kagome antiferromagnets Rb2NaTi3F12, Cs2NaTi3F12 and Cs2KTi3F12. We determine magnetization curves in excellent agreement with experimental observations. Our calculations successfully clarify the relationship between the experimental observations and the magnetization-plateau…
Three-dimensionally (3D) frustrated magnets generally exist in the magnetic diamond and pyrochlore lattices, in which quantum fluctuations suppress magnetic orders and generate highly entangled ground states (GS). LiYbSe2 in a previously unreported pyrochlore lattice was discovered from LiCl flux growth. Distinct from the quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidate NaYbSe2 hosting a perfect triangular lattice of Yb3+, LiYbSe2 crystallizes in the cubic pyrochlore structure with space group Fd-3m (No. 227). The Yb3+ ions in LiYbSe2 are arranged on a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra, which is particu…
We report the growth of large high quality crystals of the frustrated magnet, Pr2Zr2O7 by the floating zone technique. Several crystals have been produced starting with varying levels of excess of Pr6O11 to compensate for the loss of Pr2O3 during the growth process. X-ray diffraction analysis of the crystals shows that the Pr composition in our crystals, as determined by the Pr site occupancy in the pyrochlore structure, is always slightly less than 1. Fits to the magnetic sus-ceptibility data below 10 K using a Curie-Weiss law reveal an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Pr moments, with …
We report the magnetic characterization of the frustrated transition metal pyrochlore NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$. This material has high spin Co$^{2+}$ in CoF$_6$ octahedra in a pyrochlore lattice, and disordered non-magnetic Na and Ca on the large-atom sites in the structure. Large crystals grown by the floating zone method were studied. The magnetic susceptibility is isotropic, the Co moment is larger than the spin-only value, and in spite of the large Curie Weiss theta (-140 K), freezing of the spin system, as characterized by peaks in the ac and dc susceptibility and specific heat, does not occur unt…
In frustrated magnetic systems, geometric constraints or the competition amongst interactions introduce extremely high degeneracy and prevent the system from readily selecting a low-temperature ground state. The most frustrated known spin arrangement is on the pyrochlore lattice, but nearly all magnetic pyrochlores have unquenched orbital angular momentum, constraining the spin directions through spin-orbit coupling. Pyrochlore Mn$_2$Sb$_2$O$_7$ is an extremely rare Heisenberg pyrochlore system, with directionally-unconstrained spins and low chemical disorder. We show that it undergoes a spin-…
FeF$_3$, with its half-filled Fe$^{3+}$ $3d$ orbital, hence zero orbital angular momentum and $S=5/2$, is often put forward as a prototypical highly-frustrated classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet. By employing {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT), we obtain an effective spin Hamiltonian for this material. This Hamiltonian contains nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg, bi-quadratic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions as dominant terms and we use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the nonzero temperature properties of this minimal model. We find that upon d…

The spin ice system Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ exhibits strong frequency-dependent spin-freezing at $\sim$ 16 K temperature. Although it has been a matter of discussion for years, the origin of this unusual spin freezing is still unknown. The replacement of Ti with isovalent Zr leads to the dynamic magnetic ground state at low temperatures in Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and prevents the formation of high-temperature spin freezing. Interestingly the high-temperature spin freezing re-emerges in the presence of the magnetic field. In this direction, we have studied a series of disordered pyrochlore oxid…
NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$ is an insulating, frustrated A$_2$B$_2$F$_7$ pyrochlore with magnetic S = 1 Ni$^{2+}$ on the pyrochlore B site. Non-magnetic Na and Ca are disordered on the A-site. Magnetic susceptibility measurements made on an oriented single crystal, grown in a floating zone furnace, show isotropic behavior at temperatures between 5 and 300 K, with an effective moment of 3.7 $μ_B$/Ni. Despite displaying a large Curie-Weiss theta (-129 K), spin-ordering-related features are not seen in the susceptibility or specific heat until a spin glass transition at 3.6 K. This yields an empirical frustr…
Low-energy spin excitations in any long-range ordered magnetic system in the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy are gapless Goldstone modes emanating from the ordering wave vectors. In helimagnets, these modes hybridize into the so-called helimagnon excitations. Here we employ neutron spectroscopy supported by theoretical calculations to investigate the magnetic excitation spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 with a cubic spinel structure, in which spin-3/2 magnetic Cr3+ ions are arranged in a geometrically frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Apart from the conventional…
Search of new frustrated magnetic systems is of a significant importance for physics studying the condensed matter. The platform for geometric frustration of magnetic systems can be provided by copper oxocentric tetrahedra (OCu4) forming the base of crystalline structures of copper minerals from Tolbachik volcanos in Kamchatka. The present work was devoted to a new frustrated antiferromagnetic - kamchatkite (KCu3OCl(SO4)2). The calculation of the sign and strength of magnetic couplings in KCu3OCl(SO4)2 has been performed on the basis of structural data by the phenomenological crystal chemistry…
We report the basic thermodynamic properties of the new geometrically frustrated beta-pyrochlore bulk superconductor RbOs2O6 with a critical temperature Tc = 6.4 K. Specific heat measurements are performed in magnetic fields up to 12 T. The electronic density of states at the Fermi level in the normal state results in gamma = (33.7 \pm 0.2) mJ/mol_f.u./K^2. In the superconducting state, the specific heat follows conventional BCS-type behavior down to 1 K, i.e. over three orders of magnitude in specific heat data. The upper critical field slope at Tc is 1.2 T/K, corresponding to a Maki-paramete…
A model for a Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice with exchange and dipole-dipole interactions is studied via mean-field theory. In treating the dipoles by use of the Ewald method, a soft (critical) mode with a unique ordering wave vector is selected for all strengths of the dipole-dipole coupling. For weak dipoles a partially ordered, three sublattice spin structure (P state), with q_{ord}= (1/2 1/2 1/2), is selected. A fully ordered, four sublattice spin structure (F state), with q = (000), competes with the P state and becomes the stable structure as the temperature is reduce…
The recent discovery of Spin-ice is a spectacular example of non-coplanar spin arrangements that can arise in the pyrochlore A2B2O7 structure. We present magnetic and thermodynamic studies on the metallic-ferromagnet pyrochlore Sm2Mo2O7. Our studies, carried out on oriented crystals, suggest that the Sm spins have an ordered spin-ice ground state below about T* = 15 K. The temperature- and field-evolution of the ordered spin-ice state are governed by an antiferromagnetic coupling between the Sm and Mo spins. We propose that as a consequence of a robust feature of this coupling, the tetrahedra …
The recent identification of the dysprosium titanate compound $Dy_2 Ti_2 O_7$ as a ``Spin-Ice'', i.e. the spin analog of regular entropic ice of Pauling, has created considerable excitement. The ability to manipulate spins using magnetic fields gives a unique advantage over regular ice in these systems, and has been used to study the recovery of entropy. Predicted magnetization plateaus have been observed, testing the underlying model consisting of a competition between short ranged super exchange, and long ranged dipolar interactions between spins. I discuss other compounds that are possibly …
Successive ferroelectric orders and magnetoelectric coupling without long-range magnetic order in highly frustrated pyrochlore compounds: Sm$_2$Ti$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_7$
Highly frustrated antiferromagnets composed of magnetic rare-earth moments are currently attracting much experimental and theoretical interest. Rare-earth ions generally have small exchange interactions and large magnetic moments. This makes it necessary to understand in detail the role of long-range magnetic dipole-dipole interactions in these systems, in particular in the context of spin-spin correlations that develop in the paramagnetic phase, but are often unable to condense into a conventional long-range magnetic ordered phase. This scenario is most dramatically emphasized in the frustrat…
The magnetic insulator Gd2Sn2O7 is one of many geometrically frustrated magnetic materials known to exhibit a nonzero muon spin polarization relaxation rate, $λ(T)$, down to the lowest temperature (T) studied. Such behaviour is typically interpreted as a significant level of persisting spin dynamics (PSD) of the host material. In the case of Gd2Sn2O7, such PSD comes as a surprise since magnetic specific heat measurements suggest conventional gapped magnons, which would naively lead to an exponentially vanishing $λ(T)$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. In contrast to most materials that display PSD, the or…
Pyrochlore dielectric materials such as (Bi$_{1.5}$Zn$_{0.5}$)(Nb$_{1.5}$Zn$_{0.5}$)O$_7$ (BZN) have generated interest because they combine high dielectric constants with small dielectric loss tangents and yet are cubic at all temperatures. The recent low-temperature preparation and structural characterization of Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, which remains cubic down to 2 K, has provided a good model system for understanding the properties of Bi-based pyrochlores. In this contribution, the electronic structure of cubic Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is visualized and compared with the electronic structure of the Aur…
A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8. Because of the large size mismatch between Li+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr3+ ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor Bf, which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: Bf is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectivel…
We point out the experimental relevance and the detection scheme of symmetry enriched U(1) quantum spin liquids (QSLs) outside the perturbative spin-ice regime. Recent experiments on Ce-based pyrochlore QSL materials suggest that the candidate QSL may not be proximate to the well-known spin ice regime, and thus differs fundamentally from other pyrochlore QSL materials. We consider the possibility of the $π$-flux U(1) QSL favored by frustrated transverse exchange interactions rather than the usual quantum spin ice. It was previously suggested that both dipolar U(1) QSL and octupolar U(1) QSL ca…
The lanthanide pyrochlore oxides Ln$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ are one of the most intensely studied classes of materials within condensed matter physics, firmly centered as one of the pillars of frustrated magnetism. The extensive chemical diversity of the pyrochlores, coupled with their innate geometric frustration, enables realization of a wide array of exotic and complex magnetic ground states. Thus, the discovery of new pyrochlore compositions has been a persistent theme that continues to drive the field in exciting directions. The recent focus on the mixed B-site pyrochlores offers a unique route tow…
The oxide pyrochlore Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is in some ways analogous to perovskite PbTiO$_3$, in that Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ has two cations, Bi$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{4+}$ in oxidation states that are normally associated with a propensity to off-center. However, unlike PbTiO$_3$, Bi$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is experimentally observed to remain cubic down to 2 K, while the only observed ionic displacements are local and incoherent. Here we report first-principles calculations of the zone-center phonons of the ordered cubic pyrochlore which reveal several lattice instabilities. An analysis of the structural energetics s…
Large single crystals of the pyrochlore Pr2Hf2O7 have been successfully grown by the floating zone technique using an optical furnace equipped with high power Xenon arc lamps. Structural investigations have been carried out by both synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction to establish the crystallographic structure of the materials produced. The magnetic properties of the single crystals have been determined for magnetic fields applied along different crystallographic axes. The results reveal that Pr2Hf2O7 is an interesting material for further investigations as a frustrated magnet. Th…
