Let $D_F = \{(z_0, z) \in {\C}^{n} | |z_0|^2 < b, \|z\|^2 < F(|z_0|^2) \}$ be a strongly pseudoconvex Hartogs domain endowed with the \K metric $g_F$ associated to the \K form $ω_F = -\frac{i}{2} \partial \bar{\partial} \log (F(|z_0|^2) - \|z\|^2)$.
This paper contains several results on the Riemannian geometry of these domains. In the first one we prove that if $D_F$ admits a non special geodesic (see definition below) through the origin whose trace is a straight line then $D_F$ is holomorphically isometric to an open subset of the complex hyperbolic space. In the second theorem we prove that all the geodesics through the origin of $D_F$ do not self-intersect, we find necessary and sufficient conditions on $F$ for $D_F$ to be geodesically complete and we prove that $D_F$ is locally irreducible as a Riemannian manifold. Finally, we compare the Bergman metric $g_B$ and the metric $g_F$ in a bounded Hartogs domain and we prove that if $g_B$ is a multiple of $g_F$, namely $g_B=λg_F$, for some $λ\in \R^+$, then $D_F$ is holomorphically isometric to an open subset of the complex hyperbolic space.
This paper studies the geometry of Cartan-Hartogs domains from the symplectic point of view. Inspired by duality between compact and noncompact Hermitian symmetric spaces, we construct a dual counterpart of Cartan-Hartogs domains and give explicit expression of global Darboux coordinates for both Cartan-Hartogs and their dual. Further, we compute their symplectic capacity and show that a Cartan-Hartogs admits a symplectic duality if and only if it reduces to be a complex hyperbolic space.

We define a Riemannian structure as a pre-homogeneous geometric structure with curvature R. We show that R=0 if and only if the underlying metric has constant curvature. We define pre-homogeneous geometric structures and pose some problems.
We compute the curvature tensor of the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold endowed with a natural metric and we get some relationships between the geometry of the base manifold and the geometry of the tangent bundle.
In the paper, we give a Schur-Toponogov theorem in Riemannian geometry, which not only generalizes Schur's and Toponogov's theorem but also indicates their relation. Inspired by its proof, we also supply a new proof of Toponogov's theorem (in the large) in Alexandrov geometry.
If Pi: M -> B is an onto smooth maximal rank map between complete Riemannian manifolds M and B with bounded geometry, we prove sufficient conditions for M to be roughly isometric to the Riemannian product FxB, where F is a fiber of M.
In this article we show how holomorphic Riemannian geometry can be used to relate certain submanifolds in one pseudo-Riemannian space to submanifolds with corresponding geometric properties in other spaces. In order to do so, we shall first rephrase and extend some background theory on holomorphic Riemannian manifolds, which is essential for the later application of the presented method.
We show that every paracomplex space form is locally isometric to a modified Riemannian extension and give necessary and sufficient conditions so that a modified Riemannian extension is Einstein. We exhibit Riemannian extension Osserman manifolds of signature (3,3) whose Jacobi operators have non-trivial Jordan normal form and which are not nilpotent. We present new four dimensional results in Osserman geometry.
We consider local geometry of sub-pseudo-Riemannian structures on contact manifolds. We construct fundamental invariants of the structures and show that the structures give rise to Einstein-Weyl geometries in dimension 3, provided that certain additional conditions are satisfied.
We obtain geometric characterizations of isospectral minimal Riemannian Legendre foliations on compact Sasakian manifolds of constant $ϕ$-sectional curvature.
If a (non-constant) polynomial has no zero, then a certain Riemannian metric is constructed on the two dimensional sphere. Several geometric arguments are then shown to contradict this fact.
These notes on Riemannian geometry use the bases bundle and frame bundle, as in Geometry of Manifolds, to express the geometric structures. It has more problems and omits the background material. It starts with the definition of Riemannian and semi-Riemannian structures on manifolds. Affine connections, geodesics, torsion and curvature, the exponential map, and the Riemannian connection follow quickly. The Taylor series for of the metric in normal coordinates is an unusual feature. The last third covers, first and second variation of energy, completeness, cut points, the Hadamard-Cartan theore…
Shape analysis and compuational anatomy both make use of sophisticated tools from infinite-dimensional differential manifolds and Riemannian geometry on spaces of functions. While comprehensive references for the mathematical foundations exist, it is sometimes difficult to gain an overview how differential geometry and functional analysis interact in a given problem. This paper aims to provide a roadmap to the unitiated to the world of infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, spaces of mappings and Sobolev metrics: all tools used in computational anatomy and shape analysis.
Arnlind, Hoppe and Huisken showed how to express the Gauss and mean curvature of a surface embedded in a Riemannian manifold in terms of Poisson brackets of the embedding coordinates. We generalize these expressions to the pseudo-Riemannian setting and derive explicit formulas for the case of surfaces embedded in $\R^m$ with indefinite metric.
In this paper, we define and study sub-Riemannian structures on Banach manifolds. We obtain extensions of the Chow-Rashevski theorem for exact controllability, and give conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian geodesic flow despite the lack of a Pontryagin Maximum Principle in the infinite dimensional setting.
We use reduced homogeneous coordinates to study Riemannian geometry of the octonionic (or Cayley) projective plane. Our method extends to the para-octonionic (or split octonionic) projective plane, the octonionic projective plane of indefinite signature, and the hyperbolic dual of the octonionic projective plane; we discuss these manifolds in the later sections of the paper.
Using vertical and complete lifts, any left invariant Riemannian metric on a Lie group induces a left invariant Riemannian metric on the tangent Lie group. In the present article we study the Riemannian geometry of tangent bundle of two families of Lie groups. The first one is the family of special Lie groups considered by J. Milnor and the second one is the class of Lie groups with one-dimensional commutator groups. The Levi-Civita connection, sectional and Ricci curvatures have been investigated.
We discover a fundamental exterior differential system of Riemannian geometry; indeed, an intrinsic and invariant global system of differential forms of degree $n$ associated to any given oriented Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $n+1$. The framework is that of the tangent sphere bundle of $M$. We generalise to a Riemannian setting some results from the theory of hypersurfaces in flat Euclidean space. We give new applications and examples of the associated Euler-Lagrange differential systems.
There are many equivalent definitions of Riemannian geodesics. They are naturally generalised to sub-Riemannian manifold, but become non-equivalent. We give a review of different definitions of geodesics of a sub-Riemannian manifold and interrelation between them. We recall three variational definitions of geodesics as (locally) shortest curves (Euler-Lagrange, Pontyagin and Hamilton) and three definitions of geodesics as straightest curves (d'Alembert , Levi-Civita-Schouten and Cartan-Tanaka ), used in nonholonomic mechanics and discuss their interrelations. We consider a big class of sub-Rie…
In this paper we will investigate the global properties of complete Hilbert manifolds with upper and lower bounded sectional curvature. We shall prove the Focal Index Lemma that we will allow us to extend some classical results of finite dimensional Riemannian geometry such as Rauch and Berger Theorems and the Topogonov Theorem in the class of manifolds on which the Hopf-Rinow Theorem holds.
We consider $H$(eisenberg)-type groups whose law of left translation gives rise to a bracket generating distribution of step 2. In the contrast with sub-Riemannian studies we furnish the horizontal distribution with a nondegenerate indefinite metric of arbitrary index and investigate the problem concerning causal geodesics on underlying manifolds. The exact formulae for geodesics are obtained.
Each sub-Riemannian geometry with bracket generating distribution enjoys a background structure determined by the distribution itself. At the same time, those geometries with constant sub-Riemannian symbols determine a unique Cartan connection leading to their principal invariants. We provide cohomological description of the structure of these curvature invariants in the cases where the background structure is one of the parabolic geometries. As an illustration, constant curvature models are discussed for certain sub-Riemannian geometries.
We investigate contact Lie groups having a left invariant Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian metric with specific properties such as being bi-invariant, flat, negatively curved, Einstein, etc. We classify some of such contact Lie groups and derive some obstruction results to the existence of left invariant contact structures on Lie groups
We prove an estimate on the difference of Maslov indices relative to the choice of two distinct reference Lagrangians of a continuous path in the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. We discuss some applications to the study of conjugate and focal points along a geodesic in a semi-Riemannian manifold.
The recently introduced Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds satisfy a Weyl principle, i.e. are invariant under isometric embeddings. We show that they are uniquely characterized by this property. We apply this characterization to prove a Künneth-type formula for Lipschitz-Killing curvature measures, and to classify the invariant generalized valuations and curvature measures on all isotropic pseudo-Riemannian space forms.
A method to generalize results from Riemannian Geometry to Finsler geometry is presented. We use the method to generalize several results that involve only metric conditions. Between them we show that the topology induced by the Finsler structure is equivalent to the manifold topology, we provide a new proof of the Hopf-Rinow theorem in Finsler geometry and we prove the existence of the center of mass of a convex body when the non-symmetric distance function comes from a non-reversible Finsler function.
We derive a formula for the first variation of horizontal perimeter measure for $C^2$ hypersurfaces of completely general sub-Riemannian manifolds, allowing for the existence of characteristic points. For $C^2$ hypersurfaces in vertically rigid sub-Riemannian manifolds we also produce a second variation formula for variations supported away from the characteristic locus. This variation formula is used to show the bubble sets in \hn{2} are stable under volume preserving variations.
We obtain sharp quantitative Laplacian upper and lower estimates under no assumption on curvatures. As a result, we derive quantitative Laplacian, area and volume comparison theorems for tubes in Riemannian and Kähler manifolds under weak integral curvature assumptions. We also give some applications, such as a general Bonnet-Myers theorem and Cheng's eigenvalue estimate under weak integral curvature assumptions.
We describe a new class of holonomy groups on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Namely, we prove the following theorem. Let g be a nondegenerate bilinear form on a vector space V, and L:V -> V a g-symmetric operator. Then the identity component of the centraliser of L in SO(g) is a holonomy group for a suitable Levi-Civita connection.
We give manifolds in both the Riemannian and in the higher signature settings whose Riemann curvature operators commute, i.e. which satisfy R(a,b)R(c,d)=R(c,d)R(a,b) for all tangent vectors. These manifolds have global geometric phenomena which are quite different for higher signature manifolds than they are for Riemannian manifolds. Our focus is on global properties; questions of geodesic completeness and the behaviour of the exponential map are investigated.
We prove that the L^2 Riemannian metric on the manifold of all smooth Riemannian metrics on a fixed closed, finite-dimensional manifold induces a metric space structure. As the L^2 metric is a weak Riemannian metric, this fact does not follow from general results. In addition, we prove several results on the exponential mapping and distance function of a weak Riemannian metric on a Hilbert/Frechet manifold. The statements are analogous to, but weaker than, what is known in the case of a Riemannian metric on a finite-dimensional manifold or a strong Riemannian metric on a Hilbert manifold.
The conjecture of D.Blair says that there are no nonflat Riemannian metrics of nonpositive curvature compatible with a contact structure. We prove this conjecture for a certain class of contact structures on closed 3-dimensional manifolds and construct a local counterexample. We also prove that a hyperbolic metric on $\mathbb{R}^3$ cannot be compatible with any contact structure.
In this paper, we consider generic corank 2 sub-Riemannian structures, and we show that the Spherical Hausdorf measure is always a C^1-smooth volume, which is in fact generically C^2- smooth out of a stratified subset of codimension 7. In particular, for rank 4, it is generically C^2 . This is the continuation of a previous work by the auhors.
In this paper, a Riemannian geometry of noncommutative super surfaces is developed which generalizes [4] to the super case. The notions of metric and connections on such noncommutative super surfaces are introduced and it is shown that the connections are metric-compatible and have zero torsion when the super metric is symmetric, giving rise to the corresponding super Riemann curvature. The latter also satisfies the noncommutative super analogue of the first and second Bianchi identities. We also give some examples and study them in details.
A few formulas and theorems for statistical structures are proved. They deal with various curvatures as well as with metric properties of the cubic form or its covariant derivative. Some of them generalize formulas and theorems known in the case of Lagrangian submanifolds or affine hypersurfaces.
We introduce a new approach for computing curvature of sub-Riemannian manifolds. Curvature is here meant as symplectic invariants of Jacobi curves of geodesics, as introduced by Zelenko and Li. We describe how they can be expressed using a compatible affine connection and induced tensors, without any restriction on our sub-Riemannian manifold or the choice of connection. In particular, we obtain a universal Bonnet-Myers theorem of Riemannian type. We also give universal formulas for the canonical horizontal frame along each geodesic and an algorithm for computing the curvature in general. Seve…
A Riemannian metric on a manifold M induces a family of Riemannian metrics on the loop space LM depending on a Sobolev space parameter s. We compute the connection forms of these metrics and the higher symbols of their curvature forms, which take values in pseudodifferential operators. These calculations are used in a followup paper "The Geometry of Loop Spaces II: Characteristic Classes" to construct Chern-Simons classes on the tangent bundle TLM which detect nontrivial elements in the diffeomorphism group of certain Sasakian 5-manifolds associated to Kaehler surfaces.
An almost Golden Riemannian structure $(φ,g)$ on a manifold is given by a tensor field $φ$ of type (1,1) satisfying the Golden section relation $φ^{2}=φ+1$, and a pure Riemannian metric $g$, i.e., a metric satisfying $g(φX,Y)=g(X,φY)$. We study connections adapted to such a structure, finding two of them, the first canonical and the well adapted, which measure the integrability of $φ$ and the integrability of the $G$-structure corresponding to $(φ,g)$.
We consider strict and complete nearly Kaehler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. The holonomy representation of the canonical Hermitian connection is studied. We show that a strict and complete nearly Kaehler is locally a Riemannian product of homogenous nearly Kaehler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic Kaehler manifolds and 6-dimensional nearly Kaehler manifolds. As an application we obtain structure results for totally geodesic Riemannian foliations admitting a compatible Kaehler structure. Finally, we obtain a classification result for the homogenous case, reducing a …
The classical Three Gap Theorem asserts that for a natural number n and a real number p, there are at most three distinct distances between consecutive elements in the subset of [0,1) consisting of the reductions modulo 1 of the first n multiples of p. Regarding it as a statement about rotations of the circle, we find results in a similar spirit pertaining to isometries of compact Riemannian manifolds and the distribution of points along their geodesics.
We consider a unit normal vector field of (local) hyperfoliation on a given Riemannian manifold as a submanifold in the unit tangent bundle with Sasaki metric. We give an explicit expression of the second fundamental form for this submanifold and a rather simple condition its totally geodesic property in the case of a totally umbilic hyperfoliation. A corresponding example shows the non-triviality of this condition. In the 2-dimensional case, we give a complete description of Riemannian manifolds admitting a geodesic unit vector field with totally geodesic property.
On a complete Riemannian manifold M with Ricci curvature satisfying $$\textrm{Ric}(\nabla r,\nabla r) \geq -Ar^2(\log r)^2(\log(\log r))^2...(\log^{k}r)^2$$ for $r\gg 1$, where A>0 is a constant, and r is the distance from an arbitrarily fixed point in M. we prove some Liouville-type theorems for a C^2 function $f:M\rightarrow \Bbb R$ satisfying $Δf\geq F(f)$ for a function $F:\Bbb R\rightarrow \Bbb R$.
This is an expositiry article on collapsing theory in Riemannian geometry written for the Modern Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics (MEMPhys). We focus on describing the geometric and topological structure of collapsed/non-collapsed regions in Riemannian manifold under various curvature assumptions. Numerous applications of collapsing theory to Riemannian geometry are NOT discussed in this survey.
We study the small-time asymptotics of the relative heat content for submanifolds in sub-Riemannian geometry. First, we prove the existence of a smooth tubular neighborhood for submanifolds of any codimension, assuming they do not have characteristic points. Next, we propose a definition of relative heat content for submanifolds of codimension $k\geq 1$ and we build an approximation of this quantity, via smooth tubular neighborhoods. Finally, we show that this approximation fails to recover the asymptotic expansion of the relative heat content of the submanifold, by studying an explicit exampl…
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold, $L(M)$ its frame bundle. We construct new examples of Riemannian metrics on $L(M)$, which are obtained from Riemannian metrics on the tangent bundle $TM$. We compute the Levi--Civita connection and curvatures of these metrics.
We study a Laplacian operator related to the characteristic cohomology of a smooth manifold endowed with a distribution. We prove that this Laplacian does not behave very well: it is not hypoelliptic in general and does not respect the bigrading on forms in a complex setting. We also discuss the consequences of these negative results for a conjecture of P. Griffiths, concerning the characteristic cohomology of period domains.
For a subRiemannian manifold and a given Riemannian extension of the metric, we define a canonical global connection. This connection coincides with both the Levi-Civita connection on Riemannian manifolds and the Tanaka-Webster connection on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds. We define a notion of normality generalizing Tanaka's notion for CR manifolds to the subRiemannian case. Under the assumption of normality, we construct local frames that simplify computations in a manner analogous to Riemannian normal coordinates. We then use these frames to establish Bianchi Identities and symmetries f…
We construct a canonically defined affine connection in sub-Riemannian contact geometry. Our method mimics that of the Levi-Civita connection in Riemannian geometry. We compare it with the Tanaka-Webster connection in the three-dimensional case.
We introduce Riemannian Lie algebroids as a generalization of Riemannian manifolds and we show that most of the classical tools and results known in Riemannian geometry can be stated in this setting. We give also some new results on the integrability of Riemannian Lie algebroids.
