We consider two-point non-self-adjoint boundary eigenvalue problems for linear matrix differential operators. The coefficient matrices in the differential expressions and the matrix boundary conditions are assumed to depend analytically on the complex spectral parameter and on the vector of real physical parameters. We study perturbations of semi-simple multiple eigenvalues as well as perturbations of non-derogatory eigenvalues under small variations of the parameters. Explicit formulae describing the bifurcation of the eigenvalues are derived. Application to the problem of excitation of unstable modes in rotating continua such as spherically symmetric MHD alpha2-dynamo and circular string demonstrates the efficiency and applicability of the theory.
We investigate the behaviour of the eigenvalues of two-dimensional Pauli operators with nonconstant magnetic fields perturbed by a sign-indefinite decaying electric potential V. We prove new eigenvalues asymptotics.
We present a survey of some recent results concerning the location and the Weyl formula for the complex eigenvalues of two non self-adjoint operators. We study the eigenvalues of the generator $G$ of the contraction semigroup $e^{tG}, \: t \geq 0,$ related to the wave equation in an unbounded domain $Ω$ with dissipative boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$. Also one examines the interior transmission eigenvalues (ITE) in a bounded domain $K$ obtaining a Weyl formula with remainder for the counting function $N(r)$ of complex (ITE). The analysis is based on a semi-classical approach.
We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.
This note aims to give prominence to some new results on the absence and localization of eigenvalues for the Dirac and Klein-Gordon operators, starting from known resolvent estimates already established in the literature combined with the renowned Birman-Schwinger principle.
We prove the absence of eigenvaues of the three-dimensional Dirac operator with non-Hermitian potentials in unbounded regions of the complex plane under smallness conditions on the potentials in Lebesgue spaces. Our sufficient conditions are quantitative and easily checkable.
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions which guarantee the total absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the half-space, subject to variable complex Robin boundary conditions. As a further application of this technique, uniform resolvent estimates are derived under the same assumptions on the potential. Some of the results are new even in the self-adjoint setting, where we obtain quantum-mechanically natural conditions.
Motivated by what one observes dealing with PT-symmetric quantum mechanics, we discuss what happens if a physical system is driven by a diagonalizable Hamiltonian with not all real eigenvalues. In particular, we consider the functional structure related to systems living in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and we show that certain intertwining relations can be deduced also in this case if we introduce suitable antilinear operators. We also analyze a simple model, computing the transition probabilities in the broken and in the unbroken regime.
In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian …
In this work, we use regularized determinant approach to study the discrete spectrum generated by relatively compact non-self-adjoint perturbations of the magnetic Schrödinger operator $(-i\nabla - \textbf{\textup{A}})^{2} - b$ in dimension $3$ with constant magnetic field of strength $b>0$. The situation near the Landau levels $2bq$, $q \in \mathbb{N}$, is more interesting since they play the role of thresholds of the spectrum of the free operator. First, we obtain sharp upper bounds on the number of the complex eigenvalues near the Landau levels. Under appropriate hypothesis, we then prove t…
The so-called equation of motion method is useful to obtain the explicit form of the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of certain non self-adjoint bosonic Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues. These operators can be diagonalized when they are expressed in terms of pseudo-bosons, which do not behave as ordinary bosons under the adjoint transformation, but obey the Weil-Heisenberg commutation relations.
The purpose of this paper is to study spectral properties of non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators $-Δ-\frac{(n-2)^2}{4|x|^{2}}+V$ on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with complex-valued potentials $V\in L^{p,\infty}$, $p>n/2$. We prove Keller type inequalities which measure the radius of a disc containing the discrete spectrum, in terms of the $L^{p,\infty}$ norm of $V$. Similar inequalities also hold if the inverse-square potential is replaced by a large class of subcritical potentials with critical singularities at the origin. The main new ingredient in the proof is the uniform Sobolev inequality of Kenig-R…
We completely determine the Brown measure of the sum of a self-adjoint element and an elliptic element, which is the limiting eigenvalue distribution of the random matrix \[Y_N+\sqrt{s-\frac{t}{2}}X_N+i\sqrt{\frac{t}{2}}X_N'\] where $Y_N$ is an $N\times N$ deterministic Hermitian matrix whose eigenvalue distribution converges as $N\to\infty$ and $X_N$ and $X_N'$ are independent Gaussian unitary ensembles. We also study various asymptotic behaviors of this Brown measure as the variance of the elliptic element approaches infinity.
We consider Dirac, Pauli and Schrödinger quantum magnetic Hamiltonians of full rank in ${\rm L}^2 \big(\mathbb{R}^{2d} \big)$, $d \ge 1$, perturbed by non-self-adjoint (matrix-valued) potentials. On the one hand, we show the existence of non-self-adjoint perturbations, generating near each point of the essential spectrum of the operators, infinitely many (complex) eigenvalues. In particular, we establish point spectrum analogous of Bögli results [Bög17] obtained for non-magnetic Laplacians, and hence showing that classical Lieb-Thirring inequalities cannot hold for our magnetic models. On the …
We consider the graph whose vertex set is a conjugacy class ${\mathcal C}$ consisting of finite-rank self-adjoint operators on a complex Hilbert space $H$. The dimension of $H$ is assumed to be not less than $3$. In the case when operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have two eigenvalues only, we obtain the Grassmann graph formed by $k$-dimensional subspaces of $H$, where $k$ is the smallest dimension of eigenspaces. Classical Chow's theorem describes automorphisms of this graph for $k>1$. Under the assumption that operators from ${\mathcal C}$ have more than two eigenvalues we show that every automor…
Several recent papers have focused their attention in proving the correct analogue to the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for non self-adjoint operators and in finding bounds on the distribution of their eigenvalues in the complex plane. This paper provides some improvement in the state of the art in this topic. Precisely, we address the question of finding quantitative bounds on the discrete spectrum of the perturbed Lamé operator of elasticity $-Δ^\ast + V$ in terms of $L^p$-norms of the potential. Original results within the self-adjoint framework are provided too.
In the paper, we use $\mathrm{U}(2)$, the group of $2\times 2$ unitary matices, to parameterize the space of all self-adjoint boundary conditions for a fixed Sturm-Liouville equation on the interval $[0,1]$. The adjoint action of $\mathrm{U}(2)$ on itself naturally leads to a refined classification of self-adjoint boundary conditions--each adjoint orbit is a subclass of these boundary conditions. We give explicit parameterizations of those adjoint orbits of principal type, i.e. orbits diffeomorphic to the 2-sphere $S^2$, and investigate the behavior of the $n$-th eigenvalue $λ_n$ as a function…
We study small, PT-symmetric perturbations of self-adjoint double-well Schrödinger operators in dimension $n\geq 1$. We prove that the eigenvalues stay real for a very small perturbation, then bifurcate to the complex plane as the perturbation gets stronger.
We consider a class of unbounded self-adjoint operators including the Hamiltonian of the Jaynes-Cummings model without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The corresponding operators are defined by infinite Jacobi matrices with discrete spectrum. Our purpose is to give the asymptotic behavior of large eigenvalues.
In \cite{Os} a general spectral approximation theory was developed for compact operators on a Banach space which does not require that the operators be self-adjoint and also provides a first order correction term. Here we extend some of the results of that paper to nonlinear eigenvalue problems. We present examples of its application that arise in electromagnetics.
We establish Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for non self-adjoint relatively compact perturbations of certain operators of mathematical physics. We apply our results to quantum Hamiltonians of Schr{ö}dinger and Pauli with constant magnetic field of strength $b\textgreater{}0$. In particular, we use these bounds to obtain some information on the distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed operators in the neighborhood of their essential spectrum.
We present a general counting result for the unstable eigenvalues of linear operators of the form $JL$ in which $J$ and $L$ are skew- and self-adjoint operators, respectively. Assuming that there exists a self-adjoint operator $K$ such that the operators $JL$ and $JK$ commute, we prove that the number of unstable eigenvalues of $JL$ is bounded by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of~$K$. As an application, we discuss the transverse stability of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves in the classical KP-II (Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) equation. We show that these one-dimensional periodic wav…
We develop an analytic perturbation theory for eigenvalues with finite multiplicities, embedded into the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator $H$. We assume the existence of another self-adjoint operator $A$ for which the family $H_θ= e^{\mathrm{i}θA} H e^{-\mathrm{i}θA}$ extends analytically from the real line to a strip in the complex plane. Assuming a Mourre estimate holds for $\mathrm{i}[H,A]$ in the vicinity of the eigenvalue, we prove that the essential spectrum is locally deformed away from the eigenvalue, leaving it isolated and thus permitting an application of Kato's analyti…
We study location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operators with complex $\ell^{p}$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq \infty$. In the case of $\ell^{1}$-potentials, the derived bound is shown to be optimal. For $p>1$, two different spectral bounds are obtained. The method relies on the Birman-Schwinger principle and various techniques for estimations of the norm of the Birman-Schwinger operator.
We prove upper and lower bounds for sums of eigenvalues of Lieb-Thirring type for non-self-adjoint Schrödinger operators on the half-line. The upper bounds are established for general classes of integrable potentials and are shown to be optimal in various senses by proving the lower bounds for specific potentials. We consider sums that correspond to both the critical and non-critical cases.
We study the spectral properties of a family of generalized transfer operators associated to the Farey map. We show that when acting on a suitable space of holomorphic functions, the operators are self-adjoint and the positive dominant eigenvalue can be approximated by means of the matrix expression of the operators.
