We performed high-pressure angle dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si up to 75 GPa. Both materials were synthesized in bulk quantities via a solid-state reaction. In the pressure range covered by the experiments, no evidence of the occurrence of phase transitions was observed. On top of that, Fe5Si3 was found to compress isotropically, whereas an anisotropic compression was observed in Ni2Si. The linear incompressibility of Ni2Si along the c-axis is similar in magnitude to the linear incompressibility of diamond. This fact is related to the higher valence-electron charge density of Ni2Si along the c-axis. The observed anisotropic compression of Ni2Si is also related to the layered structure of Ni2Si where hexagonal layers of Ni2+ cations alternate with graphite-like layers formed by (NiSi)2- entities. The experimental results are supported by ab initio total-energy calculations carried out using density functional theory and the pseudopotential method. For Fe5Si3, the calculations also predicted a phase transition at 283 GPa from the hexagonal P63/mcm phase to the cubic structure adopted by Fe and Si in the garnet Fe5Si3O12. The room-temperature equations of state for Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si are also reported and a possible correlation between the bulk modulus of iron silicides and the coordination number of their minority element is discussed. Finally, we report novel descriptions of these structures, in particular of the predicted high-pressure phase of Fe5Si3 (the cation subarray in the garnet Fe5Si3O12), which can be derived from spinel Fe2SiO4 (Fe6Si3O12).
Neutron diffraction and ab initio studies were carried out on Mn2V1-xCoxGa (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) Heusler alloys which exhibits high TC fully compensated ferrimagnetic characteristic for x=0.5. A combined analysis of neutron diffraction and ab initio calculations revealed the crystal structure and magnetic configuration which could not be determined from the X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. As reported earlier, Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data confirmed L21 structure for Mn2VGa and Xa structure for Mn2CoGa. The alloys with x=0.25 and 0.5 possess L21 structure with…
Numerous different crystal structures of Ta2O5 are reported in literature. Although experimentally and computationally obtained lattice parameters and mechanical properties are in excellent agreement there is a pronounced deviation when it comes to electronic structures of Ta2O5. Based on ab initio studies and nano-beam X-ray diffraction of sputtered Ta2O5 thin films, we introduce an orthorhombic basic structure with a = 0.6425, b = 0.3769, and c = 0.7706 nm, which is stabilized by flipping of an oxygen atom in neighboring c-planes. The calculated energy of formation is with -3.209 eV/atom alm…
We present the structural and dynamical studies of layered vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5). The temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements reveal highly anisotropic and anomalous thermal expansion from 12 K to 853 K. The results do not show any evidence of structural phase transition or decomposition of α-V2O5, contrary to the previous transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed up to 673 K corroborate the result of our X-ray diffraction measurements. The analysis of the experiment…
We have used Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) I-V analysis and ab initio calculations to quantitatively determine the honeycomb chain model structure for the Si(111)-3x2-Sm surface. This structure and a similar 3x1 recontruction have been observed for many Alkali-Earth and Rare-Earth metals on the Si(111) surface. Our ab initio calculations show that there are two almost degenerate sites for the Sm atom in the unit cell and the LEED I-V analysis reveals that an admixture of the two in a ratio that slightly favours the site with the lower energy is the best match to experiment. We show th…
We have studied by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of Ni2Mo3N, Co3Mo3N, and Fe3Mo3N. We also report ab initio computing modeling of the high-pressure properties of these compounds, Pd2Mo3N, and Pt2Mo3N. We have found that the nitrides remain stable in the ambient-pressure cubic structure at least up to 50 GPa and determined their equation of state. All of them have a bulk modulus larger than 300 GPa. Single-crystal elastic constants have been calculated in order to quantify the stiffness of the investigated nitrides. We found that they should have a Vickers ha…
The intermetallic $τ_{11}$ Al$_4$Fe$_{1.7}$Si phase is of interest for high-temperature structural application due to its combination of low density and high strength. We determine the crystal structure of the $τ_{11}$ phase through a combination of powder neutron diffraction and density functional theory calculations. Using Pawley and Rietveld refinements of the neutron diffraction data provides an initial crystal structure model. Since Al and Si have nearly identical neutron scattering lengths, we use density-functional calculations to determine their preferred site occupations. The $τ_{11}$…
The influence of pressure on the structural and elastic properties of ScM (M = Rh, Cu, Ag, Hg) compounds has been performed by using ab initio approach pseudopotential plane- wave method based on the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optical properties have been investigated under zero pressure. It is found that the optimized lattice parameters for all metals are in good agreement with the experimental data and other available theoretical values.
Room temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on zircon-type TbVO4 and CeVO4 were performed in a diamond-anvil cell up to 50 GPa using neon as pressure-transmitting medium. In TbVO4 we found at 6.4 GPa evidence of a non-reversible pressure-induced structural phase transition from zircon to a scheelite-type structure. A second transition to an M-fergusonite-type structure was found at 33.9 GPa, which is reversible. Zircon-type CeVO4 exhibits two pressure-induced transitions. First an irreversible transition to a monazite-type structure at 5.6 GPa and second at 14.7 GPa a reve…
Structural evolution of a prospective hydrogen storage material, ammonia borane NH3BH3, has been studied at high pressures up to 12 GPa and at low temperatures by synchrotron powder diffraction. At 293 K and above 1.1 GPa a disordered I4mm structure reversibly transforms into a new ordered phase. Its Cmc21 structure was solved from the diffraction data, the positions of N and B atoms and the orientation of NH3 and BH3 groups were finally assigned with the help of density functional theory calculations. Group-theoretical analysis identifies a single two-component order parameter, combining orde…

The construction of a multi-channel vector spin polarimeter requires the development of a new detector type, which works as a spin polarizing mirror with high reflectivity and asymmetry properties to guarantee for a high figure of merit. Technical realizations are found by spin polarized electron scattering from a surface at low energies. A very promising candidate for such a detector suitable material consists of an oxygen passivated iron surface, as for example a Fe(001)-p(1x1)-O surface. We investigate in detail the electronic structure of this adsorbate system and calculate the correspondi…
Using first principles calculations, we have studied the structural and elastic properties of SrTMO3 (TM = Rh, Ti, Mo, Zr) under pressure by the plane wave pseudopotential method based on the density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The optical properties have been investigated under zero pressure. It is observed that the calculated lattice parameters are in good agreement with the available experimental result and previous theoretical results.
The static and dynamic properties of liquid Si at high-pressure have been studied using the orbital free ab-initio molecular dynamics method. Four thermodynamic states at pressures 4, 8, 14 and 23 GPa are considered. The calculated static structure shows qualitative agreement with the available experimental data. We analize the remarkable structural changes occurring between 8 and 14 GPa along with its effect on several dynamic properties.
Changes in stoichiometric NiTi allotropes induced by hydrostatic pressure have been studied employing density functional theory. By modelling the pressure-induced transitions in a way that imitates quasi-static pressure changes, we show that the experimentally observed B19' phase is (in its bulk form) unstable with respect to another monoclinic phase, B19". The lower symmetry of the B19" phase leads to unique atomic trajectories of Ti and Ni atoms (that do not share a single crystallographic plane) during the pressure-induced phase transition. This uniqueness of atomic trajectories is consider…
X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering studies on scheelite structured barium molybdate show that, at 5.8 GPa, it undergoes a first order phase transition to fergusonite structure (I2/a, Z=4), asobserved in iso-structural barium tungstate. At still higher pressures, barium molybdate transform to another phase between 7.2-9.5 GPa. On release of pressure from 15.8 GPa, the initial phase is recovered implying that the observed structural modifications are reversible.
The high-pressure behaviour of alpha-PbF2 has been investigated by angular-dispersive synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction up to 6.55(8) GPa. The fit of a 3rd-order Birch-Murnaghan equation-of-state gave the volume at zero pressure V0=194.14(4)Å$^3 and the bulk modulus b_0=47.0(6)GPa with the pressure derivative b'=7.9(4). The continuous-symmetry-measure approach has been used for the quantification of the distortion of the coordination polyhedron in alpha-PbF2 revealing an increasing distortion with pressure. keywords here: high pressure, X-ray diffraction, inorganic compounds PACS: 61.10.N2,…
Room-temperature Raman scattering was measured in ZnWO4 up to 45 GPa. We report the pressure dependence of all the Raman-active phonons of the low-pressure wolframite phase. As pressure increases new Raman peaks appear at 30.6 GPa due to the onset of a reversible structural phase transition to a distorted monoclinic b-fergusonite-type phase. The low- and high-pressure phases coexist from 30.6 GPa to 36.5 GPa. In addition to the Raman measurements we also report ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations for the two phases. These calculations helped us to determine the crystalline…
We report a detailed ab initio investigation on the optical properties of ice under a wide high pressure range. The ice X phase (up to 380GPa), the theoretical proposed higher pressure phase ice XV (300GPa), as well as the ambient pressure low-temperature phase ice XI are involved. Our results show that the dispersion relations of optical properties of ice under high pressure are quite different from those under ambient pressure. Under higher pressure, there is whole tendency of blue shift in all optical properties of ice, and the energy region for optical response become broader, such as the …
We present an ab-initio study of the electronic response function of sodium in its 5 known metallic phases from 0 to 180 GPa at room temperature. The considered formalism is based on a interpolation scheme within time-dependent density functional theory that uses maximally localized Wannier functions, providing an accurate sampling of the reciprocal space. Besides showing an excellent agreement with inelastic X-ray scattering experiments, our calculations reveal that the drastic decrease of the optical reflectivity recently measured in the high pressure phases oP8 and tI19 is associated to a n…
Here we perform $ab-initio$ study of Curie temperature $T_C$ under hydrostatic pressure for intermetallic compound GdFe$_2$. To calculate $T_C$ for GdFe$_2$ we applied mean-field solution of the Heisenberg model for several magnetic sublattices with DFT/LDA calculated values of necessary exchange interaction integrals and local magnetic moments. To compare with available experimental data pressure values were taken from zero up to about 70 Kbar. It corresponds to 2\% compression of the volume of the unit cell. In agreement with experimental data $T_C$ grows under pressure. It was shown that Fe…
Certain alumino-silicates display exotic properties enabled by their framework structure made of corner-sharing tetrahedral rigid units. Using \textit{in situ} diamond-anvil cell x-ray diffraction (XRD), we study the pressure-induced transformation of $β$ eucryptite, a prototypical alumino-silicate. $β$ eucryptite undergoes a phase transformation at moderate pressures, but the atomic structure of the new phase has not yet been reported. Based on density functional theory stability studies and Rietveld analysis of XRD patterns, we find that the pressure-stabilized phase belongs to the Pna2$_1$ …
Room temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on spinel ZnGa2O4 up to 56 GPa show evidence of two structural phase transformations. At 31.2 GPa, ZnGa2O4 undergoes a transition from the cubic spinel structure to a tetragonal spinel structure similar to that of ZnMn2O4. At 55 GPa, a second transition to the orthorhombic marokite structure (CaMn2O4-type) takes place. The equation of state of cubic spinel ZnGa2O4 is determined: V0 = 580.1(9) A3, B0 = 233(8) GPa, B0'= 8.3(4), and B0''= -0.1145 GPa-1 (implied value); showing that ZnGa2O4 is one of the less compressible spinels stu…
We have used ab-initio density functional theory technique to understand the phase transitions and structural changes in various high temperature/pressure phases of LiAlO2. The electronic band structure as well as phonon spectra are calculated for various phases as a function of pressure. The phonon entropy used for the calculations of Gibbs free energy is found to play an important role in the phase stability and phase transitions among various phases. A sudden increase in the polyhedral bond lengths (Li/Al-O) signifies the change from the tetrahedral to octahedral geometry at high-pressure p…
The phase stability of the MgMn2O4 spinel has been studied by means of high-pressure X-ray diffraction for pressures up to 30 GPa. Two samples with different inversion degrees have been considered. Both spinels undergo a phase transition towards an orthorhombic structure (CaMn2O4-type). For the more inverted sample the transition pressure is at least 1 GPa lower with respect to that of the less inverted spinel. Also the volume contraction, relative compressibility and density trends are different for the two samples. These variations have been explained according to differences in the cation d…
Using $\textit{ab-initio}$ crystal structure prediction we study the high-pressure phase diagram of $\textit{A}BiO_3$ bismuthates ($A$=Ba, Sr, Ca) in a pressure range up to 100$~$GPa. All compounds show a transition from the low-pressure perovskite structure to highly distorted, low-symmetry phases at high pressures (PD transition), and remain charge disproportionated and insulating up to the highest pressure studied. The PD transition at high pressures in bismuthates can be understood as a combined effect of steric arguments and of the strong tendency of bismuth to charge-disproportionation. …
Density-functional theory forces, stresses and energies comprise a database from which the optimal parameters of a spline-based empirical potential combining Stillinger-Weber and modified embedded-atom forms are determined. Accuracy of the potential is demonstrated by predictions of ideal shear, stacking fault, vacancy migration, elastic constants and phonons all between 0 and 100 GPa. Consistency with existing models and experiments is demonstrated by application to screw dislocation core structure and deformation twinning in a tungsten nanorod. Lastly, the potential is used to study the high…
We present a combination of ab initio calculations, magnetic Compton scattering and polarized neutron experiments, which elucidate the density distribution of unpaired electrons in the kagome staircase system Co3V2O8. Ab initio wave functions were used to calculate the spin densities in real and momentum space, which show good agreement with the respective experiments. It has been found that the spin polarized orbitals are equally distributed between the t2g and the eg levels for the spine (s) Co ions, while the eg orbitals of the cross-tie (c) Co ions only represent 30% of the atomic spin den…
Recently, I. Mosyagin, A.V. Lugovskoy, O.M. Krasilnikov, Yu.Kh. Vekilov, S.I. Simak and I.A. Abrikosov in the paper: "Ab initio calculations of pressure-dependence of high-order elastic constants using finite deformations approach"[Computer Physics Communications 220 (2017) 2030] presented a description of a technique for ab initio calculations of the pressure dependence of second- and third-order elastic constants. Unfortunately, the work contains serious and fundamental flaws in the field of finite-deformation solid mechanics.
The compression behavior of delafossite compound CuCrO2 has been investigated by in-situ x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic measurements upto 23.2 and 34 GPa respectively. X-ray diffraction data shows the stability of ambient rhombohedral structure upto ~ 23 GPa. Material shows large anisotropy in axial compression with c-axis compressibility, c= 1.2610-3(1) GPa-1 and a-axis compressibility, a= 8.9010-3(6) GPa-1. Our XRD data shows an irreversible broadening of diffraction peaks. Pressure volume data when fitted to 3rd order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state gives the value of bulk modu…
Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E…
Temperature-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe0.86Se)2 revealed first order I4/m to I4/mmm structural transformation around 216°C associated with the disorder of the Fe vacancies. Irreversibility observed during the transition is likely associated with a mobility of intercalated Alkali atoms. Pressure-dependent synchrotron powder diffraction on Cs0.83(Fe1-ySe)2, Rb0.85(Fe1-ySe)2 and K0.8(Fe1-ySe)2 (y ~ 0.14) indicated that the I4/m superstructure reflections are present up to pressures of 120 kbar. This may indicate that the ordering of the Fe vacancies is present in both su…
We report high pressure Raman, synchrotron x-ray diffraction and electrical transport studies on Weyl semimetals NbP and TaP along with first-principles density functional theoretical (DFT) analysis. The frequencies of first-order Raman modes of NbP harden with increasing pressure and exhibit a slope change at P$_c$ $\sim$ 9 GPa, and its resistivity exhibits a minimum at P$_c$. The pressure-dependent volume of NbP exhibits a change in its bulk modulus from 207 GPa to 243 GPa at P$_c$. Using DFT calculations, we show that these anomalies are associated with pressure induced Lifshitz transition …
We perform density functional molecular dynamics simulations of liquid and solid MgSiO3 in the pressure range of 120-1600 GPa and for temperatures up to 20000 K in order to provide new insight into the nature of the liquid-liquid phase transition that was recently predicted on the basis of decaying laser shock wave experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108 (2012) 065701]. However, our simulations did not show any signature of a phase transition in the liquid phase. We derive the equation of state for the liquid and solid phases and compute the shock Hugoniot curves. We discuss different thermodynamic …
A body-centered tetragonal carbon (bct-Carbon) allotrope has been predicted to be a transparent carbon polymorph obtained under pressure. The structural transition pathways from graphite to diamond, M-Carbon, and bct-Carbon are simulated and the lowest activation barrier is found for the graphite-bct transition. Furthermore, bct-Carbon has higher shear strength than diamond due to its perpendicular graphene-like structure. Our results provide a possible explanation for the formation of a transparent carbon allotrope via the cold compression of graphite. We also verify that this allotrope is ha…
We report a detailed ab initio investigation on hydrogen bonding, geometry, electronic structure, and lattice dynamics of ice under a large high pressure range, including the ice X phase (55-380GPa), the previous theoretically proposed higher-pressure phase ice XIIIM (Refs. 1-2) (380GPa), ice XV (a new structure we derived from ice XIIIM) (300-380GPa), as well as the ambient pressure low-temperature phase ice XI. Different from many other materials, the band gap of ice X is found to be increasing linearly with pressure from 55GPa up to 290GPa, the electronic density of states (DOS) shows that …
We have studied the pressure effect on the rattling of tetrahedrite Cu$_{10}$Zn$_{2}$Sb$_{4}$S$_{13\,}$(CZSS) and type-I clathrate Ba$_{8}$Ga$_{16}$Sn$_{30\,}$(BGS) by specific heat and x-ray diffraction measurements. By applying pressure $P$, the rattling energy for CZSS initially decreases and steeply increases for $P$ $\textgreater$ $1$ GPa. By contrast, the energy for BGS increases monotonically with $P$ up to 6.5 GPa. An analysis of the pressure dependent specific heat and x-ray diffraction indicates that the out-of-plane rattling of the Cu atoms in the S$_{3}$ triangle of CZSS originates…
Near-forward Raman scattering combined with ab initio phonon and bond length calculations is used to study the phonon-polariton transverse optical modes (with mixed electrical and mechanical character) of the II-VI ZnSeS mixed crystal under pressure. The goal of the study is to determine the pressure dependence of the poorly resolved percolation-type Zn-S Raman doublet of the three oscillator [1(Zn-Se),2(Zn-S)] ZnSe68S32 mixed crystal, which exhibits a phase transition at approximately the same pressure as its two end compounds (~14 GPa, zincblende-to-rocksalt), as determined by high-pressure …
{\em Ab initio} techniques based on density functional theory in the projector-augmented-wave implementation are used to calculate the free energy and a range of other thermodynamic properties of liquid iron at high pressures and temperatures relevant to the Earth's core. The {\em ab initio} free energy is obtained by using thermodynamic integration to calculate the change of free energy on going from a simple reference system to the {\em ab initio} system, with thermal averages computed by {\em ab initio} molecular dynamics simulation. The reference system consists of the inverse-power pair-p…
We present ab initio density-functional study of the noncentrosymmetric B20-type phase of RhGe, which is not found in nature and can be synthesized only at extreme pressures and temperatures. The structural, thermodynamic, electronic, lattice-dynamical, and transport properties of B20-RhGe are calculated, and their evolution with increasing pressure is traced. The temperature dependence of the charge and heat transport properties is evaluated within the semi-classical Boltzmann approach. Using the quasi-harmonic approximation, we determine the range of pressures and temperatures, in which B20-…
BaBiO3 is a well-known example of a 3D charge density wavecompound, in which the CDW behavior is induced by charge disproportionation at the Bi site. At ambient pressure, this compound is a charge-ordered insulator, but little is known about its high-pressure behavior. In this work, we study from first-principles the high-pressure phase diagram of BaBiO3 using phonon modes analysis and evolutionary crystal structure prediction. We show that charge disproportionation is very robust in this compound and persists up to 100 GPa. This causes the system to remain insulating up to the highest pressur…
Detailed high pressure Resonance Raman ($RR$) Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction ($XRD$) studies are carried out on 3-4 layered $MoSe_2$ obtained by liquid exfoliation. Analysis of ambient $XRD$ pattern and $RR$ spectra indicate the presence of a triclinic phase along with its parent hexagonal phase. Pressure evolution of prominent Raman modes and their full width at half maximum ($FWHM$) show slope changes at about 13 GPa and 33 GPa, respectively. Slope change in the linear behavior of reduced pressure ($H$) with respect to Eulerian strain ($f_E$) is observed at about 13 GPa. A minimum in the…
Uranium manganese germanide, UMn2Ge2, crystallizes in body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure with space group I4/mmm, a = 3.993A and c = 10.809A under ambient conditions. Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction was used to study the compression behaviour of UMn2Ge2 in a diamond anvil cell. The sample was studied up to static pressure of 26 GPa and a reversible structural phase transition was observed at a pressure of ~ 16.1 GPa. Unit cell parameters were determined up to 12.4 GPa and the calculated cell volumes were found to be well reproduced by a Murnaghan equation of state with K0 = 73.5 G…
In this work, we investigate calcium titanate (CaTiO3 - CTO) using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy up to 60 and 55 GPa respectively. Both experiments show that the orthorhombic Pnma structure remains stable up to the highest pressures measured, in contradiction to ab-initio predictions. A fit of the compression data with a second-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state yields a bulk modulus K0 of 181.0(6) GPa. The orthorhombic distortion is found to increase slightly with pressure, in agreement with previous experiments at lower pressures and the general rules for the evolution of per…
X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation has been used for the first time to study chemical interaction in the FeO-ZnO system at 4.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1300 K. Above 750 K, the chemical reaction between FeO and ZnO has been observed that resulted in the formation of rock salt (rs) Fe1-xZnxO solid solutions (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.85). The lattice parameters of these solid solutions have been in situ measured as a function of temperature under pressure, and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients have been calculated.
$δ$-AlOOH ($δ$) is a high-pressure hydrous phase that participates in the deep geological water cycle. At 0 GPa, $δ$ has asymmetric hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). Under pressure, it exhibits H-bond disordering, tunneling, and finally, H-bond symmetrization at ~18 GPa. This study investigates these 300 K pressure-induced state changes in $δ$ with ab initio calculations. H-bond disordering in $δ$ was modeled using supercell multi-configuration quasiharmonic calculations. We examine: (a) energy barriers for proton jumps, (b) the pressure dependence of phonon frequencies, (c) 300 K compressibility, (d)…
The electronic structure and dielectric properties of the diamond, body centered cubic diamond (bc8), and hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite) phases of carbon are computed using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory with the emphasis on the excitonic picture of the solid phases relevant in the regimes of high-pressure physics and warm dense matter. We also discuss the capabilities of reproducing the inelastic x-ray scattering spectra in comparison with the existing models in light of recent x-ray scattering experiments on carbon and carbon bearing materials in the Megabar ran…

X-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation has been used for the first time to study chemical interaction in the MnO-ZnO system at 4.8 GPa and temperatures up to 1600 K. Above 750 K, the chemical reaction between MnO and ZnO has been observed that resulted in the formation of rock salt (rs) Mn1-xZnxO solid solutions (0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7). The lattice parameters of these solid solutions have been in situ measured at high pressure as a function of temperature, and corresponding thermal expansion coefficients have been calculated.
Ab initio calculations based on the Density Functional Theory are used to show that the Debye frequency is a linear function of density to a high accuracy for several elemental solids at pressures (at least) up to 360 GPa. This implies that the ratio of density over the (Debye-frequency-based) vibrational Grüneisen parameter is a linear function of density in this region. Numerical data from first principles calculations for several systems at temperatures up to 2000K suggest that this is also true for the thermal Grüneisen parameter in the same range of pressure. Our analytical form of the vi…
High-pressure phase of boron oxide, orthorhombic \b{eta}-B2O3, has been studied in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 22 GPa and Raman scattering to 46 GPa at room temperature. The bulk modulus of \b{eta}-B2O3 has been found to be 169(3) GPa that is in good agreement with our ab initio calculations. Raman and IR spectra of \b{eta}-B2O3 have been measured at ambient pressure, all experimentally observed bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated ones, and the mode assignment has been performed. Based on the data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equat…
The high pressure and high temperature phase diagram of Ta has been studied in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using x-ray diffraction measurements up to 52 GPa and 3800 K. The melting was observed at nine different pressures, being the melting temperature in good agreement with previous laser-heated DAC experiments, but in contradiction with several theoretical calculations and previous piston-cylinder apparatus experiments. A small slope for the melting curve of Ta is estimated (dTm/dP = 24 K/GPa at 1 bar) and a possible explanation for this behaviour is given. Finally, a P-V-T equat…
Through the use of perturbation theory, in this work we develop a method which allows for a substantial reduction in the size of the plane-wave basis used in density-functional calculations. This method may be used for both pseudopotentials and all-electron calculations and is particularly beneficial in the latter case. In all cases, the approach has the advantage of allowing accurate predictions of transferability errors for any environment. Finally, this method can be easily implemented into conjugate gradient techniques and it is therefore computationally efficient. In this work, we apply t…
