We present a combination of ab initio calculations, magnetic Compton scattering and polarized neutron experiments, which elucidate the density distribution of unpaired electrons in the kagome staircase system Co3V2O8. Ab initio wave functions were used to calculate the spin densities in real and momentum space, which show good agreement with the respective experiments. It has been found that the spin polarized orbitals are equally distributed between the t2g and the eg levels for the spine (s) Co ions, while the eg orbitals of the cross-tie (c) Co ions only represent 30% of the atomic spin density. Furthermore, the results reveal that the magnetic moments of the cross-tie Co ions, which are significantly smaller than those of the spine Co ions in the zero-field ferromagnetic structure, do not saturate by applying an external magnetic field of 2 T along the easy axis a, but that the increasing bulk magnetization originates from induced magnetic moments on the O and V sites. The refined individual magnetic moments are mu(Co_c)=1.54(4) mu_B, mu(Co_s)=2.87(3) mu_B, mu(V)=0.41(4) mu_B, mu(O1)=0.05(5) mu_B, mu(O2)=0.35(5) mu_B, and; mu(O3)=0.36(5) mu_B combining to the same macroscopic magnetization value, which was previously only attributed to the Co ions.
Recent x-ray Compton scattering experiments in ice have provided useful information about the quantum nature of the interaction between H$_2$O monomers. The hydrogen bond is characterized by a certain amount of charge transfer which could be determined in a Compton experiment. We use ab-initio simulations to investigate the hydrogen bond in H$_2$O structures by calculating the Compton profile and related quantities in three different systems, namely the water dimer, a cluster containing 12 water molecules and the ice crystal. We show how to extract estimates of the charge transfer from the Com…
Neutron diffraction and ab initio studies were carried out on Mn2V1-xCoxGa (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1) Heusler alloys which exhibits high TC fully compensated ferrimagnetic characteristic for x=0.5. A combined analysis of neutron diffraction and ab initio calculations revealed the crystal structure and magnetic configuration which could not be determined from the X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. As reported earlier, Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data confirmed L21 structure for Mn2VGa and Xa structure for Mn2CoGa. The alloys with x=0.25 and 0.5 possess L21 structure with…
Numerous different crystal structures of Ta2O5 are reported in literature. Although experimentally and computationally obtained lattice parameters and mechanical properties are in excellent agreement there is a pronounced deviation when it comes to electronic structures of Ta2O5. Based on ab initio studies and nano-beam X-ray diffraction of sputtered Ta2O5 thin films, we introduce an orthorhombic basic structure with a = 0.6425, b = 0.3769, and c = 0.7706 nm, which is stabilized by flipping of an oxygen atom in neighboring c-planes. The calculated energy of formation is with -3.209 eV/atom alm…
We present the structural and dynamical studies of layered vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5). The temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements reveal highly anisotropic and anomalous thermal expansion from 12 K to 853 K. The results do not show any evidence of structural phase transition or decomposition of α-V2O5, contrary to the previous transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed up to 673 K corroborate the result of our X-ray diffraction measurements. The analysis of the experiment…
We have used Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) I-V analysis and ab initio calculations to quantitatively determine the honeycomb chain model structure for the Si(111)-3x2-Sm surface. This structure and a similar 3x1 recontruction have been observed for many Alkali-Earth and Rare-Earth metals on the Si(111) surface. Our ab initio calculations show that there are two almost degenerate sites for the Sm atom in the unit cell and the LEED I-V analysis reveals that an admixture of the two in a ratio that slightly favours the site with the lower energy is the best match to experiment. We show th…
The intermetallic $τ_{11}$ Al$_4$Fe$_{1.7}$Si phase is of interest for high-temperature structural application due to its combination of low density and high strength. We determine the crystal structure of the $τ_{11}$ phase through a combination of powder neutron diffraction and density functional theory calculations. Using Pawley and Rietveld refinements of the neutron diffraction data provides an initial crystal structure model. Since Al and Si have nearly identical neutron scattering lengths, we use density-functional calculations to determine their preferred site occupations. The $τ_{11}$…
Structural evolution of a prospective hydrogen storage material, ammonia borane NH3BH3, has been studied at high pressures up to 12 GPa and at low temperatures by synchrotron powder diffraction. At 293 K and above 1.1 GPa a disordered I4mm structure reversibly transforms into a new ordered phase. Its Cmc21 structure was solved from the diffraction data, the positions of N and B atoms and the orientation of NH3 and BH3 groups were finally assigned with the help of density functional theory calculations. Group-theoretical analysis identifies a single two-component order parameter, combining orde…

The construction of a multi-channel vector spin polarimeter requires the development of a new detector type, which works as a spin polarizing mirror with high reflectivity and asymmetry properties to guarantee for a high figure of merit. Technical realizations are found by spin polarized electron scattering from a surface at low energies. A very promising candidate for such a detector suitable material consists of an oxygen passivated iron surface, as for example a Fe(001)-p(1x1)-O surface. We investigate in detail the electronic structure of this adsorbate system and calculate the correspondi…
We have studied by means of high-pressure x-ray diffraction the structural stability of Ni2Mo3N, Co3Mo3N, and Fe3Mo3N. We also report ab initio computing modeling of the high-pressure properties of these compounds, Pd2Mo3N, and Pt2Mo3N. We have found that the nitrides remain stable in the ambient-pressure cubic structure at least up to 50 GPa and determined their equation of state. All of them have a bulk modulus larger than 300 GPa. Single-crystal elastic constants have been calculated in order to quantify the stiffness of the investigated nitrides. We found that they should have a Vickers ha…
A method for computing electron momentum densities and Compton profiles from ab initio calculations is presented. Reciprocal space is divided into optimally-shaped tetrahedra for interpolation, and the linear tetrahedron method is used to obtain the momentum density and its projections such as Compton profiles. Results are presented and evaluated against experimental data for Be, Cu, Ni, Fe3Pt, and YBa2Cu4O8, demonstrating the accuracy of our method in a wide variety of crystal structures.
In order to probe electron wave functions involved in the bonding of NH$_4$F, we have performed Compton scattering experiments in an oriented single crystal and in a powder. Ab initio calculations of the Compton profiles for NH$_4$F and NH$_4$Cl are used to enlighten the nature of the bonds in the NH$_4$F crystal. As a consequence, we are able to show significant charge transfer in the ammonium ion which is not observable using other methods. Our study provides a compelling proof for hydrogen bond formation in NH$_4$F.
Using x-ray diffraction Ghose et al. [Surf. Sci. {\bf 581} (2005) 199] have recently produced a structural model for the quantum-wire surface Si(553)-Au. This model presents two parallel gold wires located at the step edge. Thus, the structure and the gold coverage are quite different from previous proposals. We present here an ab initio study using density functional theory of the stability, electronic band structure and scanning tunneling microscopy images of this model.
The Moiré structure of epitaxial graphene mono layer grown on 6H-SiC(0001) has been investigated recently by grazing incidence fast atom diffraction, and the results were compared with the calculation of the structure \textit{ab initio} and exact diffraction codes. We review these results and present a complementary approach using the Hard Wall Model to extract information without any \textit{a priori}. Reversely, taking advantage of previous exact calculations we evaluate quantitatively the performance of this simplified approach by comparing predictions using the same potential energy surfac…
We show that in mixed-valence 3d transition metal oxides undergoing a structural transition, the low temperature phase results from an effective ordering of the charge. This arrangement and the quantitative evaluation of the atomic charges are determined by using resonant x-ray scattering experiments further analyzed with the help of ab initio calculations of the corresponding scattering factors. We have found that this reorganization concerns only a small fraction of electron and is necessary to reconcile all the experimental data.
Laser melting of semiconductors has been observed for almost 40 years; surprisingly, it is not well understood where most theoretical simulations show a laser-induced thermal process. $\textit{Ab initio}$ nonadiabatic simulations based on real-time time-dependent density functional theory reveal intrinsic nonthermal melting of silicon, at a temperature far below the thermal melting temperature of 1680 K. Both excitation threshold and time evolution of diffraction intensity agree well with experiment. Nonthermal melting is attributed to excitation-induced drastic changes in bonding electron den…
We performed high-pressure angle dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si up to 75 GPa. Both materials were synthesized in bulk quantities via a solid-state reaction. In the pressure range covered by the experiments, no evidence of the occurrence of phase transitions was observed. On top of that, Fe5Si3 was found to compress isotropically, whereas an anisotropic compression was observed in Ni2Si. The linear incompressibility of Ni2Si along the c-axis is similar in magnitude to the linear incompressibility of diamond. This fact is related to the higher valence-electron char…
Experimental results on Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) epitaxial films deposited by laser ablation on SrTiO3 substrates are presented. It has been theoretically predicted using first-principles density functional theory that BFCO is ferrimagnetic (with a magnetic moment of 2muB per formula unit) and ferroelectric (with a polarization of ~80 microC/cm2 at 0K). The crystal structure investigated using X-ray diffraction shows that the films are epitaxial with a high degree of crystallinity. Chemical analysis carried out by X-ray Microanalysis and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy indicates the correct cationic …
Novel imaging spin-filter techniques, which are based on low energy electron diffraction, are currently of high scientific interest. To improve the spin-detection efficiency a variety of new materials have been introduced in recent years. A new class of promising spin-filter materials are represented by multiferroic systems, as both magnetic and electric ordering exist in these materials. We have investigated Fe/BaTiO3(001), which defines a prominent candidate due to its moderate spontaneous polarization, for spin filter applications calculating diffraction patterns for spin polarized electron…
New boron-rich sulfide B6S and selenide B6Se have been discovered from high pressure - high temperature synthesis combined with ab initio evolutionary crystal structure prediction, and studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy at ambient conditions. As it follows from Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data, both chalcogenides have orthorhombic symmetry and belongs to Pmna space group. All experimentally observed Raman bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated phonon modes, and the mode assignment has been performed. Prediction of mechanical …
The simulation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images or diffraction patterns is often required to interpret their contrast and extract specimen features. This is especially true for high-resolution phase-contrast imaging of materials, but electron scattering simulations based on atomistic models are widely used in materials science and structural biology. Since electron scattering is dominated by the nuclear cores, the scattering potential is typically described by the widely applied independent atom model. This approximation is fast and fairly accurate, especially for scanning TEM …
In this paper, we present new models of germanium selenide chalcogenide glasses heavily doped with silver. The models were readily obtained with ab initio molecular dynamics and their structure agrees closely with diffraction measurements. Thermal molecular dynamics simulation reveals the dynamics of Ag+ ions and the existence of trapping centers as conjectured in other theory work. We show that first principles simulation is a powerful tool to reveal the motion of ions in glass.
High-pressure phase of boron oxide, orthorhombic \b{eta}-B2O3, has been studied in situ by synchrotron X-ray diffraction to 22 GPa and Raman scattering to 46 GPa at room temperature. The bulk modulus of \b{eta}-B2O3 has been found to be 169(3) GPa that is in good agreement with our ab initio calculations. Raman and IR spectra of \b{eta}-B2O3 have been measured at ambient pressure, all experimentally observed bands have been attributed to the theoretically calculated ones, and the mode assignment has been performed. Based on the data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equat…
Combined X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, and $ab$ $initio$ study of (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ under pressure: implications to the unified phase diagram
通过联合 X 射线衍射、电阻率测量与从头计算,揭示了 (TMTTF)₂PF₆ 在压力下关联效应减弱、二聚化消失,并阐明了电荷与自旋有序的不同压力响应,为统一相图提供依据。
Neutron Compton Scattering measurements presented here of the momentum distribution of hydrogen in $KH_2PO_4$ (KDP) just above and well below the ferroelectric transition temperature show clearly that the proton is coherent over both sites in the in the high temperature phase, a result that invalidates the commonly accepted order-disorder picture of the transition. The Born-Oppenheimer potential for the hydrogen, extracted directly from data for the first time, is consistent with neutron diffraction data, and the vibrational spectrum is in substantial agreement with infrared absorption measure…
Cubic boron phosphide BP has been studied in situ by X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering up to 55 GPa at 300 K in a diamond anvil cell. The bulk modulus of B0 = 174(2) GPa has been established, which is in excellent agreement with our ab initio calculations. The data on Raman shift as a function of pressure, combined with equation-of-state data, allowed us to estimate the Grüneisen parameters of the TO and LO modes of zinc-blende structure, γGTO = 1.16 and γGLO = 1.04, just like in the case of other AIIIBV diamond-like phases, for which γGTO > γGLO = 1. We also established that the pressure…
By first-principles LSDA+U calculations, we revealed that the current physical picture of defective uranium dioxide suggested solely by neutron diffraction analysis is unsatisfactory. An understanding based on quantum theory has been established as a thermodynamical competition among point defects and cuboctahedral cluster, which naturally interprets the puzzled origin of the asymmetric O' and O'' interstitials. It also gives a clear and consistent agreement with most available experimental data. Unfortunately, the observed high occupation of O'' site cannot be accounted for in this picture an…
We investigate the electronic, magnetic and orbital properties of La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 perovskite by means of an ab initio electronic structure calculation within the Hartree-Fock approximation. Using the experimental crystal structure reported by Radaelli et al. [Phys. Rev B 55, 3015 (1997)], we find a charge-ordering stripe-like ground state. The periodicity of the stripes, and the insulating CE-type magnetic structure are in agreement with neutron x-ray and electron diffraction experiments. However, the detailed structure is more complex than that envisaged by simple models of charge and orbital …
We report direct experimental evidence of antiferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition under pressure in NaNbO3 using neutron diffraction at room temperature. The paraelectric phase is found to stabilize above 8 GPa and its crystal structure has been determined in orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbnm. The variation of the structural parameters of the both orthorhombic phases as a function of pressure was determined. We have not found evidence for structural phase transition around 2 GPa as previously suggested in the literature based on Raman scattering experiments, however, signi…
Accurate low-order structure factors (Fg) measured by quantitative convergent beam electron diffraction (QCBED) were used for validation of different density functional theory (DFT) approximations. 23 low-order Fg were measured by QCBED for the transition metals Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu, and the transition metal based intermetallic phases γ-TiAl, β-NiAl and γ1-FePd using a multi-beam off-zone axis (MBOZA) method and then compared with Fg calculated ab-initio by DFT using the local spin density approximation (LDA) and LDA+U, and different generalized gradient approximations (GGA) functionals. Dif…
The (Cd, Be)Te semiconductor alloy that exhibits a dramatic mismatch in bond covalency and stiffness clarifying its vibrational and mechanical properties is used as a benchmark to test the limits of the percolation model (PM) worked out to explain the complex Raman spectra of the related but less contrasted (Zn, Be) chalcogenides. The test is done by way of experiment (x smaller than 0.11) combining Raman scattering with X ray diffraction at high pressure and ab initio calculations (x around 0, 0.5 and 1). The (macroscopic) bulk modulus B drops below the CdTe value on minor Be incorporation, a…
Magnetic neutron scattering measures spin-spin correlations giving information about the long-range spin order as well as the shape of the spin density in magnetic materials. Similarly, detailed first principles calculations directly compute the spin density in materials. In this work, the authors carefully compare experimentally measured magnetic neutron intensities to three levels of theory: density functional theory in two approximations, and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo. While each theory performs similarly for the simple antiferromagnet MnO, there are significant differences between d…
Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation is used to study the structure and electronic properties of the liquid Ga-Se system at the three compositions Ga$_2$Se, GaSe and Ga$_2$Se$_3$, and of the GaSe and Ga$_2$Se$_3$ crystals. The calculated equilibrium structure of GaSe crystal agrees well with available experimental data. The neutron-weighted liquid structure factors calculated from the simulations are in reasonable agreement with recent neutron diffraction measurements. Simulation results for the partial radial distribution functions show that the liquid structure is closely related to that …
We investigated the structural and dynamical properties of a tetrahedrally coordinated crystalline ice from first principles based on density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation with the projected augmented wave method. First, we report the structural behaviour of ice at finite temperatures based on the analysis of radial distribution functions obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show how the ordering of the hydrogen bonding breaks down in the tetrahedral network of ice with entropy increase in agreement with the neutron diffraction data. We also…
In rare-earth permanent magnets (REPM's), trade-off's between intrinsic magnetic properties are often encountered. A recent example is SmFe$_{12}$ where excellent magnetic properties can be achieved at the sacrifice of bulk structure stability. Bulk structure stability is sustained by the presence of the third substitute element as is the case with SmFe$_{11}$Ti, where Ti degrades magnetic properties. It is now in high demand to find out with which chemical composition a good compromise in the trade-off between structure stability and strong ferromagnetism is reached. We inspect the effects of…
We report a high-pressure experimental and theoretical investigation of the structural properties of zircon-type HoVO4. Angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements were carried out under quasi-hydrostatic and partial non-hydrostatic conditions up to 28 and 23.7 GPa, respectively. In the first case, an irreversible phase transition is found at 8.2 GPa. In the second case, the onset of the transition is detected at 4.5 GPa, a second (reversible) transition is found at 20.4 GPa, and a partial decomposition of HoVO4 was observed. The structures of the different phases have been assigned and th…
Near-forward Raman scattering combined with ab initio phonon and bond length calculations is used to study the phonon-polariton transverse optical modes (with mixed electrical and mechanical character) of the II-VI ZnSeS mixed crystal under pressure. The goal of the study is to determine the pressure dependence of the poorly resolved percolation-type Zn-S Raman doublet of the three oscillator [1(Zn-Se),2(Zn-S)] ZnSe68S32 mixed crystal, which exhibits a phase transition at approximately the same pressure as its two end compounds (~14 GPa, zincblende-to-rocksalt), as determined by high-pressure …
Based on ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the low temperature crystal structure of Li2NH which in spite of its great interest as H-storage material is still matter of debate. The dynamical simulations reveal a precise correlation in the fractional occupation of Li sites which leads average atomic positions in excellent agreement with diffraction data and solves inconsistencies of previous proposals.
We report on a new method to determine the degree of bulk spin polarization in single crystal Co$_{(1-x)}$Fe$_x$S$_2$ by modeling magnetic Compton scattering with {\it ab initio} calculations. Spin-dependent Compton profiles were measured for CoS$_2$ and Co$_{0.9}$Fe$_{0.1}$S$_2$. The {\it ab initio} calculations were then refined by rigidly shifting the bands to provide the best fit between the calculated and experimental directional profiles for each sample. The bulk spin polarizations, $P$, corresponding to the spin-polarized density of states at the Fermi level, were then extracted from th…
Mono- and bi-alkali antimonides, X$_2$YSb (X and Y from Group I), are promising for next-generation electron emitters due to their capability of producing high-quality electron beams. However, these materials are not yet well understood, in part due to the technical challenges in growing pure, ordered alkali antimonides. For example, in the current literature there is a lack of complete understanding of the mechanically stable crystal structures of these materials. As a first step towards understanding this issue, this paper presents an ab initio study of stability of single-crystal mono- and …
Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion wi…
We report the high-pressure synthesis of novel superconductor MgB$_2$ and some related compounds. The superconducting transition temperature of our samples of MgB$_2$ is equal to 36.6 K. The MgB$_2$ lattice parameters determined via X-ray diffraction are in excellent agreement with results of our ab initio calculations. The time-differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) experiments demonstrate a small increase in quadrupole frequency of $^111$Cd probe with decreasing temperature from 293 to 4.2 K. The electric field gradient (EFG) at the B site calculated from first principles is in f…
We present here results of high resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction (SXRD) and dielectric studies in conjunction with Landau theory considerations on (Pb0.94Sr0.06)(ZrxTi1-x)O3 compositions in the vicinity of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) to find evidence for the flattening of the free energy surface at the MPB proposed in recent ab-initio studies on strongly piezoelectric ceramics. SXRD results reveal that the tetragonal and pseudorhombohedral monoclinic compositions with x=0.515 and 0.550 transform directly into the cubic paraelectric phase, whereas for 0.520<x<0.545, the pseudo…
An ideal atomistic model of a disordered material should contradict no experiments, and should also be consistent with accurate force fields (either {\it ab initio}or empirical). We make significant progress toward jointly satisfying {\it both} of these criteria using a hybrid reverse Monte Carlo approach in conjunction with approximate first principles molecular dynamics. We illustrate the method by studying the complex binary glassy material g-GeSe$_2$. By constraining the model to agree with partial structure factors and {\it ab initio} simulation, we obtain a 647-atom model in close agreeme…
Ab initio studies have theoretically predicted room temperature ferromagnetism in crystalline SnO2, ZrO2 and TiO2 doped with non magnetic element from the 1A column as K and Na. Our purpose is to address experimentally the possibility of magnetism in both Sn1-xKxO2 and Sn1-xCaxO2 compounds. The samples have been prepared using equilibrium methods of standard solid state route. Our study has shown that both Sn1-xCaxO2 and Sn1-xKxO2 structure is thermodynamically unstable and leads to a phase separation, as shown by X-ray diffraction and detailed micro-structural analyses with high resolution tr…
We present the \emph{ab initio} calculation of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Bi$_2$Fe$_4$O$_9$. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal structure with the Fe$^{3+}$ ions forming the Cairo pentagonal lattice implying strong geometric frustration. The neutron diffraction measurements reveal nearly orthogonal magnetic configuration, which at first sight is rather unexpected since it does not minimize the total energy of the pair of magnetic ions coupled by the Heisenberg exchange interaction. Here we calculate the electronic structure and exchange integrals of…
MnSnTeO6, a new chiral antiferromagnet, was prepared both by topotactic transformation of the metastable rosiaite-type polymorph and by direct synthesis from coprecipitated hydroxides. Its structure, static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied comprehensively both experimentally (through X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, dielectric permittivity and ESR techniques) and theoretically (by means of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations within the spin-polarized generalized gradient approximation). MnSnTeO6 is isostructural with MnSb2O6 (sp…
Ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations have been used to investigate the structure, dynamics and electronic properties of the liquid alloy Ag(1-x)Se(x) at 1350 K and at the three compositions x=0.33, 0.42 and 0.65. The calculations are based on density-functional theory in the local density approximation and on the pseudopotential plane-wave method. The reliability of the simulations is confirmed by detailed comparisons with very recent neutron diffraction results for the partial structure factors and radial distribution functions (RDF) of the stoichiometric liquid Ag2Se. The simulations sho…
The ability to use photonic quasiparticles to control electromagnetic energy far below the diffraction limit is a defining paradigm in nanophotonics. An important recent development in this field is the measurement and manipulation of extremely confined phonon-polariton modes in polar dielectrics such as silicon carbide and hexagonal boron nitride, which pave the way for nanophotonics and extreme light-matter interactions in the mid-IR to THz frequency range. To further advance this promising field, it is of great interest to predict the optical response of recently discovered and yet-to-be-sy…
Based on ab initio band structure calculations we formulate a general theoretical method for description of the temperature dependence of electric field gradient in solids. The method employs a procedure of averaging multipole electron density component (l \neq 0) inside a sphere vibrating with the nucleus at its center. As a result of averaging each Fourier component (K \neq 0) on the sphere is effectively reduced by the square root of the Debye-Waller factor [exp(-W)]. The electric field gradient related to a sum of K-components most frequently decreases with temperature (T), but under certa…
This paper reports an investigation on the phase diagram and compressibility of wolframite-type tungstates by means of x-ray powder diffraction and absorption in a diamond-anvil cell and ab initio calculations. The diffraction experiments show that monoclinic wolframite-type MgWO4 suffers at least two phase transitions, the first one being to a triclinic polymorph with a structure similar to that of CuWO4 and FeMoO4-II. The onset of each transition is detected at 17.1 and 31 GPa. In ZnWO4 the onset of the monoclinic-triclinic transition has been also found at 15.1 GPa. These findings are suppo…

We report the crystal structure and magnetic behavior of the $4d^3$ spin-$\frac32$ silicophosphate MoP$_3$SiO$_{11}$ studied by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, thermodynamic measurements, and ab initio band-structure calculations. Our data revise the crystallographic symmetry of this compound and establish its rhombohedral space group ($R\bar 3c$) along with the geometrically perfect honeycomb lattice of the Mo$^{3+}$ ions residing in disconnected MoO$_6$ octahedra. Long-range antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=0$ observed below $…
The chain-polymer Cu(II) breathing crystals C21H19CuF12N4O6 were studied using the x-ray diffraction and ab initio band structure calculations. We show that the crystal structure modification at T=146 K, associated with the spin crossover transition, induces the changes of the orbital order in half of the Cu sites. This in turn results in the switch of the magnetic interaction sign in accordance with the Goodenough-Kanamori-Andersen theory of the coupling between the orbital and spin degrees of freedom.
Polyvalent metal melts (gallium, tin, bismuth, etc.) have microscopic structural features, which are detected by neutron and X-ray diffraction and which are absent in simple liquids. Based on neutron and X-ray diffraction data and results of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations for liquid gallium, we examine the structure of this liquid metal at atomistic level. Time-resolved cluster analysis allows one to reveal that the short-range structural order in liquid gallium is determined by a range of the correlation lengths. This analysis performed over set of independent samples corre…
