We report a detailed ab initio investigation on hydrogen bonding, geometry, electronic structure, and lattice dynamics of ice under a large high pressure range, including the ice X phase (55-380GPa), the previous theoretically proposed higher-pressure phase ice XIIIM (Refs. 1-2) (380GPa), ice XV (a new structure we derived from ice XIIIM) (300-380GPa), as well as the ambient pressure low-temperature phase ice XI. Different from many other materials, the band gap of ice X is found to be increasing linearly with pressure from 55GPa up to 290GPa, the electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the valence bands have a tendency of red shift (move to lower energies) referring to the Fermi energy while the conduction bands have a blue shift (move to higher energies). This behavior is interpreted as the high pressure induced change of s-p charge transfers between hydrogen and oxygen. It is found that ice X exists in the pressure range from 75GPa to about 290GPa. Beyond 300GPa, a new hydrogen-bonding structure with 50% hydrogen atoms in symmetric positions in O-H-O bonds and the other half being asymmetric, ice XV, is identified. The physical mechanism for this broken symmetry in hydrogen bonding is revealed.
The properties of water ice at megabar pressure are characterized with ab initio computer simulations. The focus lies on the metallic Cmcm phase and its insulating distorted analogue with Pnma symmetry. Both phases were recently predicted to occur at 15.5 and 12.5 Mbar respectively [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 (2010) 195701]. The Fermi surface of the Cmcm phase is analyzed and possibility of Fermi nesting to occur is discussed. The Wannier orbital are computed for the Pnma structure and compared to ice X. While ice X shows typical sp3 hybridization, in the Pnma structure, the orbitals are deformed an…
The comparative study of structural, electronic properties, topology of the Fermi surface, and the features of chemical bonding in layered 1111-oxyarsenides LaRhAsO and LaIrAsO has been performed based on the results of ab initio modeling of their electronic structure. It was established that only weak sensitivity with respect both to electron and hole doping is expected for LaIrAsO being non-magnetic metal, however, the Rh-containing compound should be characterized with weak band magnetism, and the hole doping is expected to be able to move its ground state away from the boundary of magnetic…
We investigate the adsorption of a Ni monolayer on the $β$-SiC(001) surface by means of highly precise first-principles all-electron FLAPW calculations. Total energy calculations for the Si- and C-terminated surfaces reveal high Ni-SiC adsorption energies, with respect to other metals, confirmining the strong reactivity and the stability of the transition metal/SiC interface. These high binding energies, about 7.3-7.4 eV, are shown to be related to strong $p$-$d$ hybridization, common to both surface terminations and different adsorption sites and despite the large mismatch, can stabilize over…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) belong to technologically important compounds. We have explored the structural, elastic, bonding, optoelectronic and some thermo-physical properties of ZrX2 (X = S, Se, Te) TMDCs in details via ab-initio technique in this study. Elastic anisotropy indices, atomic bonding character, optoelectronic properties and thermo-physical parameters including melting temperature and minimum phonon thermal conductivity are investigated for the first time. All the TMDCs under investigation possess significant elastic anisotropy and layered structural features. ZrX2 (…
We report a detailed ab initio investigation on the optical properties of ice under a wide high pressure range. The ice X phase (up to 380GPa), the theoretical proposed higher pressure phase ice XV (300GPa), as well as the ambient pressure low-temperature phase ice XI are involved. Our results show that the dispersion relations of optical properties of ice under high pressure are quite different from those under ambient pressure. Under higher pressure, there is whole tendency of blue shift in all optical properties of ice, and the energy region for optical response become broader, such as the …
Solid mercury in the rhombohedral structure is unbound within the self-consistent field (Hartree-Fock) approximation. The metallic binding is entirely due to electronic correlations. We determine the cohesive energy of solid mercury within an ab-initio many-body expansion for the correlation part. Electronic correlations in the $5d$ shell contribute about half to the cohesive energy. Relativistic effects are found to be very important. Very good agreement with the experimental value is obtained.
The impact of the inner structure and thermal history of planets on their observable features, such as luminosity or magnetic field, crucially depends on the poorly known heat and charge transport properties of their internal layers. The thermal and electric conductivities of different phases of water (liquid, solid, and super-ionic) occurring in the interior of ice giant planets, such as Uranus or Neptune, are evaluated from equilibrium ab initio molecular dynamics, leveraging recent progresses in the theory and data analysis of transport in extended systems. The implications of our findings …
Based on the different covalent versus ionic chemical bonding and isoelectronic rutile CrO2, CrNF is proposed starting from ordered rutile derivative structures subjected to full geometry optimizations. The ground state structure defined from cohesive energies is of MgUO4-type, characterized by short covalent Cr-N and long ionic Cr-F distances. Like CrO2 it is a half-metallic ferromagnet with M = 2 Bohr Magnetons integer magnetization per formula unit with reduced band gap at minority spins. Major differences of magnetic response to pressure characterize CrNF as a soft ferromagnet versus hard …
In this work, we have studied the structural, elastic, mechanical, electronic, bonding, acoustic, thermal and optical properties of TaX (X = P, As) in detail via first-principles method using the density functional theory. A comprehensive study of elastic constants and moduli shows that both TaP and TaAs possesses low to medium level of elastic anisotropy (depending on the measure), reasonably good machinability, mixed bonding characteristics with ionic and covalent contributions, brittle nature and relatively high Vickers hardness with a low Debye temperature and melting temperature. The mini…
The first principles approaches, density functional theory (DFT) and quantum Monte Carlo, have been used to examine the balance between van der Waals (vdW) forces and hydrogen (H) bonding in ambient and high pressure phases of ice. At higher pressure, the contribution to the lattice energy from vdW increases and that from H bonding decreases, leading vdW to have a substantial effect on the transition pressures between the crystalline ice phases. An important consequence, likely to be of relevance to molecular crystals in general, is that transition pressures obtained from DFT functionals which…
Crystal orbital overlap population based on all-electron ab initio simulation with numeric atom-centered orbitals and its application to chemical-bonding analysis in Li-intercalated layered materials
The simulation of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images or diffraction patterns is often required to interpret their contrast and extract specimen features. This is especially true for high-resolution phase-contrast imaging of materials, but electron scattering simulations based on atomistic models are widely used in materials science and structural biology. Since electron scattering is dominated by the nuclear cores, the scattering potential is typically described by the widely applied independent atom model. This approximation is fast and fairly accurate, especially for scanning TEM …

In the present study, we have explored the structural properties, electronic structures, elastic constants, acoustic behaviors, phonon dispersions, optical properties, and various thermophysical properties of binary orthogonal and hexagonal Mo2C compounds in details via first-principles calculations using the density functional theory (DFT). The calculated ground state lattice parameters in both the symmetries are in excellent agreement with available experimental results.…
On the basis of ab-initio pseudopotential calculations, we study structural, magnetic, dynamical, and mechanical properties of the hypothetical CaC ionic compound in the rock-salt (RS), B2, zinc-blende (ZB), wurtzite (WZ), NiAs (NA), anti-NiAs (NA*), and CrB (B33) structures. It is argued that the ZB, WZ, NA, and RS structures are more ionic while the NA*, B2, and B33 structures are more covalent systems. As a result of that, the nonmagnetic B33-CaC is the energetically preferred system, while the more ionic structures prefer a ferromagnetic ground state with high Fermi level spin polarization…
A comprehensive ab-initio insights into the pressure dependent mechanical, phonon, bonding, electronic, optical, and thermal properties of CsV3Sb5 Kagome compound
Due to the noticeable structural similarity and being neighborhood in periodic table of group-IV and -V elemental monolayers, whether the combination of group-IV and -V elements could have stable nanosheet structures with optimistic properties has attracted great research interest. In this work, we performed first-principles simulations to investigate the elastic, vibrational and electronic properties of the carbon nitride (CN) nanosheet in the puckered honeycomb structure with covalent interlayer bonding. It has been demonstrated that the structural stability of CN nanosheet is essentially ma…

Starting configurations are generated via Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations of Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) measurements of experimental samples. Structural analysis is presented illustrating the bonding trends found with changing stoichiometry.
We investigated the structural and dynamical properties of a tetrahedrally coordinated crystalline ice from first principles based on density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation with the projected augmented wave method. First, we report the structural behaviour of ice at finite temperatures based on the analysis of radial distribution functions obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show how the ordering of the hydrogen bonding breaks down in the tetrahedral network of ice with entropy increase in agreement with the neutron diffraction data. We also…
Despite similarities in formulae and local structures of Zr2CoH5 and Mg2CoH5, they are shown from ab initio calculations to present contrasted electronic, magnetic, mechanical and bonding properties due to the environment of cobalt with hydrogen characterized by negatively charged CoHx entities (x = 4, 5 resp.) and to the chemical nature of Zr versus Mg. Zr2CoH5 is found more cohesive, harder and less ductile than Mg2CoH5. High density of states at the Fermi level arises from out-of-plane non-bonding Co-dz2 in Zr2CoH5 which is found metallic ferromagnet in the ground state, in contrast with no…
X-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy are important techniques to characterize chemical bonding at surfaces and are often used to identify the strength and nature of adsorbate-substrate interactions. In this study, we judge the ability of x-ray spectroscopic techniques to identify different regimes of chemical bonding at metal-organic interfaces. To achieve this, we sample different interaction strength regimes in a comprehensive and systematic way by comparing two topological isomers, azulene and naphthalene, adsorbed on three metal substrates with varying reactivity, namely t…
SnTaS2 is a recently discovered layered semimetal exhibiting type-II low transition temperature superconductivity. Except some superconductivity related parameters, most of the physical properties, namely, elastic, mechanical, bonding, phonon dispersion, acoustic, thermophysical, and optical properties of SnTaS2 are unexplored till now. In this study, we have investigated these hitherto unexplored properties of SnTaS2 for the first time employing density functional theory (DFT) based first-principles method. SnTaS2 is a mechanically stable, elastically anisotropic compound with strongly layere…
Structural, elastic, electronic, bonding, thermo-mechanical and optical properties of predicted NbAlB MAB phase in comparison to MoAlB: DFT based ab-initio insights
Recent x-ray Compton scattering experiments in ice have provided useful information about the quantum nature of the interaction between H$_2$O monomers. The hydrogen bond is characterized by a certain amount of charge transfer which could be determined in a Compton experiment. We use ab-initio simulations to investigate the hydrogen bond in H$_2$O structures by calculating the Compton profile and related quantities in three different systems, namely the water dimer, a cluster containing 12 water molecules and the ice crystal. We show how to extract estimates of the charge transfer from the Com…
The dispersive interaction between nanotubes is investigated through ab initio theory calculations and in an analytical approximation. A van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)] is used to determine and compare the binding of a pair of nanotubes as well as in a nanotube crystal. To analyze the interaction and determine the importance of morphology, we furthermore compare results of our ab initio calculations with a simple analytical result that we obtain for a pair of well-separated nanotubes. In contrast to traditional density functional theory calculatio…
In this paper we have used our recently developed ab initio Wannier-function-based methodology to perform extensive Hartree-Fock and correlated calculations on Li$_{2}$O and LiCl to compute their Born effective charges. Results thus obtained are in very good agreement with the experiments. In particular, for the case of Li$_{2}$O, we resolve a controversy originating in the experiment of Osaka and Shindo {[}Solid State Commun. 51 (1984) 421] who had predicted the effective charge of Li ions to be in the range 0.58--0.61, a value much smaller compared to its nominal value of unity, thereby, sug…
Magnetic properties and bonding analyses of perovskite structure Co$_{4}$N nitride have been investigated within density functional theory using both pseudo potential and all electron methods. In the same time, the structural and magnetic stability of pure cobalt in hexagonal close packed (HCP), face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) structures are reviewed. At equilibrium, non-spin polarized (NSP) and spin polarized (SP) calculations of the energy versus volume show that the ground state is ferromagnetic in both materials. HCP-Co is found to be more stable than the cubic ones…
Structural, elastic and electronic band structure properties of A-15 type Nb-based intermetallic compounds Nb3B (B = Os, Pt, Au) have been revisited using first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT). All these show excellent agreement with previous reports. More importantly, electronic bonding, charge density distribution and Fermi surface features have been studied in detail for the first time. Vickers hardness of these compounds is also studied. The Fermi surfaces of Nb3B contain both hole- and electron-like sheets, the features of which change systematically a…
Hydrogen bonding in infinite HF and HCl bent (zigzag) chains is studied using the ab initio coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) correlation method. The correlation contribution to the binding energy is decomposed in terms of nonadditive many-body interactions between the monomers in the chains, the so-called energy increments. Van der Waals constants for the two-body dispersion interaction between distant monomers in the infinite chains are extracted from this decomposition. They allow a partitioning of the correlation contribution to the binding energy into short- and long-range terms.…
Ab initio total-energy density-functional methods with supercell models have been employed to calculate the c(2x2) structure of the Br-adsorbed Ag(100) and Au(100) surfaces. The atomic geometries of the surfaces and the preferred bonding sites of the bromine have been determined. The bonding character of bromine with the substrates has also been studied by analyzing the electronic density of states and the charge transfer. The calculations show that while the four-fold hollow-site configuration is more stable than the two-fold bridge-site topology on the Ag(100) surface, bromine prefers the br…

Ab-initio insights into the structural, elastic, bonding, and thermophysical properties of UHx (x = 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8) under pressure: possible relevance to high-Tc superconductivity
We use ab initio density functional calculations to study the formation and structural as well as thermal stability of cellular foam-like carbon nanostructures. These systems with a mixed $sp^2/sp^3$ bonding character may be viewed as bundles of carbon nanotubes fused to a rigid contiguous 3D honeycomb structure that can be compressed more easily by reducing the symmetry of the honeycombs. The foam may accommodate the same type of defects as graphene, and its surface may be be stabilized by terminating caps. We postulate that the foam may form under non-equilibrium conditions near grain bounda…
We have studied dense hydrogen and deuterium experimentally up to 320 GPa and using ab initio molecular dynamic (MD) simulations up to 370 GPa between 250 and 300 K. Raman and optical absorption spectra show significant anharmonic and quantum effects in mixed atomic and molecular dense phase IV of hydrogen. In agreement with these observations, ab initio MD simulations near 300 K show extremely large atomic motions, which include molecular rotations, hopping and even pair fluctuations suggesting that phase IV may not have a well-defined crystalline structure. The structurally diverse layers (m…
The topological Weyl semimetal MoTe2, in the orthorhombic phase, is an important system both from the point of view of fundamental physics and potential applications. In this study we have investigated the elastic, electronic, bonding and optical properties of MoTe2 using density functional theory. Study of the elastic constants and moduli indicates that MoTe2 is a relatively soft material with high level of machinability. Mechanical stability conditions are fulfilled. The compound possesses elastic and mechanical anisotropy and is prone to brittle fracture. Elastic parameters indicate that bo…
The PEO3:LiCF3SO3 polymer electrolyte has attracted significant research due to its enhanced stability at the lithium/polymer interface of high conductivity polymer batteries. Experimental studies have shown that, depending on the preparation conditions, both the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 crystalline complex and the PEO3:LiCF3SO3 amorphous phase can be formed. However, previous theoretical investigations focused on the short chain amorphous PEO3:LiCF3SO3 system. We report ab initio density-functional-theory calculations of crystalline PEO3:LiCF3SO3. The calculated results about the bonding configuration, …
Ab initio simulations that account for nuclear quantum effects have been used to examine the order-disorder transition in squaric acid, a prototypical H-bonded antiferroelectric crystal. Our simulations reproduce the >100 K difference in transition temperature observed upon deuteration as well as the strong geometrical isotope effect observed on intermolecular separations within the crystal. We find that collective transfer of protons along the H-bonding chains - facilitated by quantum mechanical tunneling - is critical to the order-disorder transition and the geometrical isotope effect. This …
Ultra-wide band gap (UWBG) materials are poised to play an important role in the future of power electronics. Devices made from UWBG materials are expected to operate at higher voltages, frequencies, and temperatures than current silicon and silicon carbide based devices; and can even lead to significant miniaturization of such devices. In the UWBG field, aluminum nitride and boron nitride have attracted great interest, however, the B$_x$Al$_{1-x}$N alloys are much less studied. In this article, using first-principles simulations combining density-functional theory and cluster expansion method…
Binary metallic phosphide, Nb2P5, belongs to technologically important class of materials. Quite surprisingly, a large number of physical properties of Nb2P5, including elastic properties and their anisotropy, acoustic, electronic (DOS, charge density distribution, electron density difference), thermo-physical, bonding characteristics, and optical properties have not been investigated at all. In the present work we have explored all these properties in details for the first time employing density functional theory based first-principles method. Nb2P5 is found to be a mechanically stable, elast…
We use ab initio density functional calculations to determine the interaction of a graphene monolayer with the Si(111) surface. We found that graphene forms strong bonds to the bare substrate and accommodates the 12% lattice mismatch by forming a wavy structure consisting of free-standing conductive ridges that are connected by ribbon-shaped regions of graphene, which bond covalently to the substrate. We perform quantum transport calculations for different geometries to study changes in the transport properties of graphene introduced by the wavy structure and bonding to the Si substrate. Our r…
Unmasking charge transfer in the Misfits: ARPES and ab initio prediction of electronic structure in layered incommensurate systems without artificial strain
We report measurements of the non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) from the O 1s orbitals in ice Ih, and also report calculations of the corresponding spectra for ice Ih and several other phases of water ice. We find that the intermediate-energy fine structure may be calculated well using an ab initio real-space full multiple scattering approach, and that it provides a strong fingerprint of the intermediate-range order for some ice phases. These results have important consequences for future NRIXS measurements of high-pressure phases of ice and also may call into question the assump…
We report a joint experimental and theoretical study of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of layered monoclinic arsenic sulfide (alpha-As2S3), aka mineral orpiment, under compression. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements performed in orpiment samples at high pressure and combined with ab initio calculations have allowed us to determine the equation of state and the tentative assignment of the symmetry of many Raman-active modes of orpiment. From our results, we conclude that no first-order phase transition occurs up to 25 GPa at room temperature; however, co…
Molecular simulations have provided valuable insight into the microscopic mechanisms underlying homogeneous ice nucleation. While empirical models have been used extensively to study this phenomenon, simulations based on first-principles calculations have so far proven prohibitively expensive. Here, we circumvent this difficulty by using an efficient machine learning model trained on density-functional theory (DFT) energies and forces. We compute nucleation rates at atmospheric pressure, over a broad range of supercoolings, using the seeding technique and systems of up to hundreds of thousands…
We study the isotope effect on the temperature of the proton order/disorder phase transition between ice XI and ice Ih, using the quasiharmonic approximation combined with \textit{ab initio} density functional theory calculations. We show that this method is accurate enough to obtain a phase transition temperature difference between light ice (H$_2$O) and heavy ice (D$_2$O) of 6 K as compared to the experimental value of 4 K. More importantly, we are able to explain the origin of the isotope effect on the much debated large temperature difference observed in the phase transition. The source of…
We determine the impact of electron solvation on D$_2$O structures adsorbed on Cu(111) with low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, two-photon photoemission, and ab initio theory. UV photons generating solvated electrons lead not only to transient, but also to permanent structural changes through the rearrangement of individual molecules. The persistent changes occur near sites with a high density of dangling OH groups that facilitate electron solvation. We conclude that energy dissipation during solvation triggers permanent molecular rearrangement via vibrational excitation.
Full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave method with the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation potential was applied for comparative study of elastic and electronic properties of six cubic thorium pnictides ThPn and Th3Pn4, where Pn = P, As, and Sb. Optimized lattice parameters, theoretical density, independent elastic constants (Cij), bulk moduli (B), shear moduli (G), Young's moduli (Y), and Poisson's ratio (ν) were obtained for the first time and analyzed in comparison with available theoretical and experimental data. The electronic band structures, total and…
In order to improve the hydrogen storage properties of calcium hydride (CaH2), we have tuned its thermodynamical properties through fluorination. Using ab-initio total energy calculations based on density functional theory, the structural stability, electronic structure and chemical bonding of CaH2-xFx systems are investigated. The phase transition of fluorinated systems from orthorhombic to cubic structure has been observed at 18% fluorine doped CaH2. The phase stability analysis shows that CaH2-xFx systems are highly stable and the stability is directly correlating with their ionicity. Densi…
Discovering new materials with ultrahigh thermal conductivity has been a critical research frontier and driven by many important technological applications ranging from thermal management to energy science. Here we have rigorously investigated the fundamental lattice vibrational spectra in ternary compounds and determined the thermal conductivity using a predictive ab initio approach. Phonon transport in B-X-C (X = N, P, As) groups is systematically quantified with different crystal structures and high-order anharmonicity involving a four-phonon process. Our calculation found an ultrahigh room…
Chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) are regarded as the leading candidate for storage-class non-volatile memory and neuro-inspired computing. Recently, using the $TiTe_2$/$Sb_2Te_3$ material combination, a new framework - phase-change heterostructure (PCH), has been developed and proved to effectively suppress the noise and drift in electrical resistance upon memory programming, largely reducing the inter-device variability. However, the atomic-scale structural and chemical nature of PCH remains to be fully understood. In this work, we carry out thorough ab initio simulations to assess …
Adsorption of ammonia at NH3/NH2/H covered GaN(0001) surface was analyzed using results of ab initio calculations. The whole configuration space of partially NH3/NH2/H covered GaN(0001) surface was divided into zones differently pinned Fermi level: at Ga broken bond state for dominantly bare surface (region I), at VBM for NH2 and H covered (region II), and at CBM for NH3 covered surface (region III). The extensive ab intio calculations show validity of electron counting rule (ECR) for all mixed coverage, for bordering these three regions. The adsorption was analyzed using newly identified depe…
Very recently (November, 2010, PRB, 82, 180520R) the first 122-like ternary superconductor KxFe2Se2 with enhanced TC ~ 31K has been discovered. This finding has stimulated much activity in search of related materials and triggered the intense studies of their properties. Indeed already in 2010-2011 the superconductivity (TC ~ 27-33K) was also found in the series of new synthesized 122 phases such as CsxFe2Se2, RbxFe2Se2, (TlK)xFeySe2 etc. which have formed today the new family of superconducting iron-based materials without toxic As. Here, using the ab initio FLAPW-GGA method we have predicted…
Using first-principles calculations, the structural, elastic and electronic properties of MoAlB have been investigated for the first time. The optimized lattice constants exhibit fair agreement with the experimental values. The computed elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability conditions for the MoAlB. The Mo-based boride MoAlB is elastically anisotropic and can be classified as brittle material. This boride is expected to show reasonable thermal conductivity due to its high Debye temperature of 693 K. The metallic electrical conductivity of this compound is predicted from the electr…
We present results of a study of small stoichiometric $Cd_{n}Te_{n}$ ($1{\leq}n{\leq}6$) clusters and few medium sized non-stoichiometric $Cd_{m}Te_{n}$ [($m,n= 13, 16, 19$); ($m{\neq}n$)] clusters using the Density Functional formalism and projector augmented wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. Structural properties {\it viz.} geometry, bond length, symmetry and electronic properties like HOMO-LUMO gap, binding energy, ionization potential and nature of bonding {\it etc.} have been analyzed.
