The dispersive interaction between nanotubes is investigated through ab initio theory calculations and in an analytical approximation. A van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)] is used to determine and compare the binding of a pair of nanotubes as well as in a nanotube crystal. To analyze the interaction and determine the importance of morphology, we furthermore compare results of our ab initio calculations with a simple analytical result that we obtain for a pair of well-separated nanotubes. In contrast to traditional density functional theory calculations, the vdW-DF study predicts an intertube vdW bonding with a strength that is consistent with recent observations for the interlayer binding in graphitics. It also produce a nanotube wall-to-wall separation which is in very good agreement with experiments. Moreover, we find that the vdW-DF result for the nanotube-crystal binding energy can be approximated by a sum of nanotube-pair interactions when these are calculated in vdW-DF. This observation suggests a framework for an efficient implementation of quantum-physical modeling of the CNT bundling in more general nanotube bundles, including nanotube yarn and rope structures.
It is shown that current saturation in semiconducting carbon nanotubes is indistinguishable from metallic nanotubes if the carrier density is above a critical value determined by the bandgap and the LO phonon energy. This feature stems from the higher number of current-carrying states in the semiconducting tubes due to the van-Hove singularity at the band-edge. Above this critical carrier density, the ensemble saturation velocity at high-fields is found to be independent of the bandgap, but strongly dependent on the carrier density, explaining recent observations.
We report correlated-electron calculations of optically excited states in ten semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes with a wide range of diameters. Optical excitation occurs to excitons whose binding energies decrease with the increasing nanotube diameter, and are smaller than the binding energy of an isolated strand of poly-(paraphenylene vinylene). The ratio of the energy of the second optical exciton polarized along the nanotube axis to that of the lowest exciton is smaller than the value predicted within single-particle theory. The experimentally observed weak photoluminescence is …
We present a quantitative theory of optical absorption polarized transverse to the tube axes in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes. Transverse optical absorption in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is to an exciton state that is strongly blueshifted, relative to the two lowest longitudinal excitons, by electron-electron interactions. The binding energy of the transverse exciton is considerably smaller than those of the longitudinal excitons. Electron-electron interactions also reduce the relative oscillator strength of the transverse optical absorption. Our theoretical …
The electronic and vibrational density of states of a semiconducting carbon nanotube in a crossed junction was investigated by elastic and inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The strong radial compression of the nanotube at the junction induces local metallization spatially confined to a few nm. The local electronic modifications are correlated with the observed changes in the radial breathing and G-band phonon modes, which react very sensitively to local mechanical deformation. In addition, the experiments reveal the crucial contribution of the image charges to the contact potential at…
This work considers the g-tensor anisotropy induced by the flexural thermal vibrations in one-dimensional structures and its role in electron spin relaxation. In particular, the mechanism of spin-lattice relaxation via flexural modes is studied theoretically for localized and delocalized electronic states in semiconducting carbon nanotubes in the presence of magnetic field. The calculation of one-phonon spin-flip process predicts distinctive dependencies of the relaxation rate on temperature, magnetic field and nanotube diameter. Comparison with the spin relaxation caused by the hyperfine inte…
We present a first-principles study of semiconducting carbon nanotubes adsorbed on the unpassivated Si(100) surface. We have found metallicity for the combined system caused by n-doping of the silicon slab representing the surface by the SWNT. We confirm this metallicity for nanotubes of different diameters and chiral angles, and find the effect to be independent of the orientation of the nanotubes on the surface. We also present adsorption energetics and configurations which show semiconducting SWNTs farther apart from the surface and transferring less charge, in comparison with metallic SWNT…
We present a new class of boron sheets, composed of triangular and hexagonal motifs, that are more stable than structures considered to date and thus are likely to be the precursors of boron nanotubes. We describe a simple and clear picture of electronic bonding in boron sheets and highlight the importance of three-center bonding and its competition with two-center bonding, which can also explain the stability of recently discovered boron fullerenes. Our findings call for reconsideration of the literature on boron sheets, nanotubes, and clusters.
A theory is developed for interband tunneling in semiconducting carbon nanotube and graphene nanoribbon p-n junction diodes. Characteristic length and energy scales that dictate the tunneling probabilities and currents are evaluated. By comparing the Zener tunneling processes in these structures to traditional group IV and III-V semiconductors, it is proved that for identical bandgaps, carbon based 1D structures have higher tunneling probabilities. The high tunneling current magnitudes for 1D carbon structures suggest the distinct feasibility of high-performance tunneling-based field-effect tr…
We report benchmark calculations of electroabsorption in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes to provide motivation to experimentalists to perform electroabsorption measurement on these systems. We show that electroabsorption can detect continuum bands in different energy manifolds, even as other nonlinear absorption measurements have failed to detect them. Direct determination of the binding energies of excitons in higher manifolds thereby becomes possible. We also find that electroabsorption can provide evidence for Fano-type coupling between the second exciton and the lowest contin…
Using Coulomb correlation parameters appropriate for $π$-conjugated polymers (PCPs), and a nearest neighbor hopping integral that is arrived at by fitting the energy spectra of three zigzag semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs), we are able to determine quantitatively the exciton energies and exciton binding energies of 29 S-SWCNTs within a semiempirical $π$-electron Hamiltonian that has been widely used for PCPs. Our work establishes the existence of a deep and fundamental relationship between PCPs and S-SWCNTs.
Doping of semiconductors is essential in modern electronic and photonic devices. While doping is well understood in bulk semiconductors, the advent of carbon nanotubes and nanowires for nanoelectronic and nanophotonic applications raises some key questions about the role and impact of doping at low dimensionality. Here we show that for semiconducting carbon nanotubes, bandgaps and exciton binding energies can be dramatically reduced upon experimentally relevant doping, and can be tuned gradually over a broad range of energies in contrast to higher dimensional systems. The later feature is made…
We present theoretical analysis and first-principles calculation of the radiative lifetime of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes. An intrinsic lifetime of the order of 10 ps is computed for the lowest optically active bright excitons. The intrinsic lifetime is however a rapid increasing function of the exciton momentum. Moreover, the electronic structure of the nanotubes dictates the existence of dark excitons nearby in energy to each bright exciton. Both effects strongly influence measured lifetime. Assuming a thermal occupation of bright and dark exciton bands, we find an effective …
We present many-body \textit{ab initio} calculations of the electronic and optical properties of semiconducting zigzag carbon nanotubes under uniaxial strain. The GW approach is utilized to obtain the quasiparticle bandgaps and is combined with the Bethe-Salpeter equation to obtain the optical absorption spectrum. We find that the dependence of the electronic bandgaps on strain is more complex than previously predicted based on tight-binding models or density-functional theory. In addition, we show that the exciton energy and exciton binding energy depend significantly on strain, with variatio…
Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors operate over a wide range of electron or hole density, controlled by the gate voltage. Here we calculate the mobility in semiconducting nanotubes as a function of carrier density and electric field, for different tube diameters and temperature. The low-field mobility is a non-monotonic function of carrier density, and varies by as much as a factor of 4 at room temperature. At low density, with increasing field the drift velocity reaches a maximum and then exhibits negative differential mobility, due to the non-parabolicity of the bandstructure. At a cri…
In this work, phosphorous-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes have been synthesized by the thermal decomposition of trimethylphosphine using a high-vacuum chemical vapor deposition method. Furthermore, a modified density-gradient-ultracentrifugation process has been applied to carefully purify our doped material. The combined use of Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy allowed us to provide the first insight into the bonding environment of P incorporated into the carbon lattice, avoiding competing signals arising from synthesis byproducts. This study represents the first step toward the…
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are typically long (>100 nm) and have been well established as novel quasi one-dimensional systems with interesting electrical, mechanical, and optical properties. Here, quasi zero-dimensional SWNTs with finite lengths down to the molecular scale (7.5 nm in average) were obtained by length separation using a density gradient ultracentrifugation method. Different sedimentation rates of nanotubes with different lengths in a density gradient were taken advantage of to sort SWNTs according to length. Optical experiments on the SWNT fractions revealed that the…
Theoretical calculations of carrier transport in single-walled carbon nanotubes are compared with recent experiments. Carrier-phonon scattering is accounted for using the deformation potential approximation. Comparing with experiments, a deformation potential coupling constant of 14eV is determined for semiconducting carbon nanotubes. Theory is shown to closely predict the low-field mobility, on conductance, and on resistance of field-effect transistors as a function of induced nanotube charge density, diameter, and temperature. Results indicate that the device conductance is reduced as multip…
A theory of electron spin relaxation in semiconducting carbon nanotubes is developed based on the hyperfine interaction with disordered nuclei spins I=1/2 of $^{13}$C isotopes. It is shown that strong radial confinement of electrons enhances the electron-nuclear overlap and subsequently electron spin relaxation (via the hyperfine interaction) in the carbon nanotubes. The analysis also reveals an unusual temperature dependence of longitudinal (spin-flip) and transversal (dephasing) relaxation times: the relaxation becomes weaker with the increasing temperature as a consequence of the particular…
The inability to synthesize single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) possessing uniform electronic properties and chirality represents the major impediment to their widespread applications. Recently, there is growing interest to explore and synthesize well-defined carbon nanostructures, including fullerenes, short nanotubes, and sidewalls of nanotubes, aiming for controlled synthesis of SWCNTs. One noticeable advantage of such processes is that no metal catalysts are used, and the produced nanotubes will be free of metal contamination. Many of these methods, however, suffer shortcomings of either…
Electronic properties of metal-finite semiconducting carbon nanotube interfaces are studied as a function of the nanotube length using a self-consistent tight-binding theory. We find that the shape of the potential barrier depends on the long-range tail of the charge transfer, leading to an injection barrier thickness comparable to half of the nanotube length until the nanotube reaches the bulk limit. The conductance of the nanotube junction shows a transition from tunneling to thermally-activated transport with increasing nanotube length.
The temperature dependence of the band gap of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is calculated by direct evaluation of electron-phonon couplings within a ``frozen-phonon'' scheme. An interesting diameter and chirality dependence of $E_g(T)$ is obtained, including non-monotonic behavior for certain tubes and distinct ``family'' behavior. These results are traced to a strong and complex coupling between band-edge states and the lowest-energy optical phonon modes in SWNTs. The $E_g(T)$ curves are modeled by an analytic function with diameter and chirality dependent parameters; th…
The temperature dependence of optical excitation life-time, Gamma, and transition energies, E_ii, were measured for bucky-papers of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and inner tubes in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) using resonant Raman scattering. The temperature dependence of Gamma and E_ii is the same for both types of samples and is independent of tube chirality. The data proves that electron-phonon interaction is responsible for temperature dependence of E_ii(T). The temperature independent inhomogeneous contribution to Gamma is much larger in the SWCNT samples, which is explai…
Electroabsorption spectroscopy of well-identified index-defined semiconducting carbon nanotubes is reported. The measurement of high definition electroabsorption spectra allows direct indexation with unique nanotube chirality. Results show that at least for a limited range of diameters, electroabsorption is directly proportional to the exciton binding energy of nanotubes. Electroabsorption is a powerful technique which directly probes into carbon nanotube excitonic states, and may become a useful tool for in situ study of excitons in future nanotube-based photonic devices such as electroabsorp…
We present an atomistic self-consistent tight-binding study of the electronic and transport properties of metal-semiconducting carbon nanotube interfaces as a function of the nanotube channel length when the end of the nanotube wire is buried inside the electrodes. We show that the lineup of the nanotube band structure relative to the metal Fermi-level depends strongly on the metal work function but weakly on the details of the interface. We analyze the length-dependent transport characteristics, which predicts a transition from tunneling to thermally-activated transport with increasing nanotu…
We found a giant Seebeck effect in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films, which exhibited a performance comparable to that of commercial Bi2Te3 alloys. Carrier doping of semiconducting SWCNT films further improved the thermoelectric performance. These results were reproduced well by first-principles transport simulations based on a simple SWCNT junction model. These findings suggest strategies that pave the way for emerging printed, all-carbon, flexible thermoelectric devices.
In high magnetic fields, the exciton absorption spectrum of a semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube splits as a result of Aharonov-Bohm magnetic flux. A magnetic field of 370 T, generated by the electro-magnetic flux compression destructive pulsed magnet-coil technique, was applied to single-chirality semiconducting carbon nanotubes. Using streak spectroscopy, we demonstrated the separation of the independent band-edge exciton states at the K and K' points of the Brillouin zone after the mixing of the dark and bright states above 150 T. These results enable a quantitative discussion of …
Measurements of optical properties at nanometre-level are of central importance for characterization of optoelectronic device. It was, however, hardly possible for the conventional light-probe measurements to determine the local optical properties from single quantum object with nanometrical inhomogeneity. Here we demonstrate the first successful determination of the absolute optical constants, including the optical conductivity and absorption coefficient, for an individual carbon nanotube with defects by comparing energy loss spectroscopy and optical absorption. The optical conductivity obtai…
We report studies of optical Fabry-Perot microcavities based on semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes with a quality factor of 160. We experimentally demonstrate a huge photoluminescence signal enhancement by a factor of 30 in comparison with the identical film and by a factor of 180 if compared with a thin film containing non-purified (8,7) nanotubes. Futhermore, the spectral full-width at half-maximum of the photo-induced emission is reduced down to 8 nm with very good directivity at a wavelength of about 1.3 $μ$m. Such results prove the great potential of carbon nanotubes for photonic…
We investigate theoretically the switching characteristics of semiconducting carbon nanotubes connected to gold electrodes under an external (gate) electric field. We find that the external introduction of holes is necessary to account for the experimental observations. We identify metal-induced-gap states (MIGS) at the contacts and find that the MIGS of an undoped tube would not significantly affect the switching behavior, even for very short tube lengths. We also explore the miniaturization limits of nanotube transistors, and, on the basis of their switching ratio, we conclude that transisto…
Semiconducting carbon nanotubes under high electric field stress (~10 V/um) display a striking, exponential current increase due to avalanche generation of free electrons and holes. Unlike in other materials, the avalanche process in such 1D quantum wires involves access to the third sub-band, is insensitive to temperature, but strongly dependent on diameter ~exp(-1/d^2). Comparison with a theoretical model yields a novel approach to obtain the inelastic optical phonon emission length, L_OP,ems ~ 15d nm. The combined results underscore the importance of multi-band transport in 1D molecular wir…
The structural optimization and energetics studies of SiC graphitic-like structures have been investigated theoretically in the context of formations of stable graphitic-like layer structures, single- and multi-walled nanotubes using the DFT-based Vienna ab-inito simulation package. The bonding nature of atoms in the optimized structures has been examined using a local analysis technique based on a self-consistent and environment-dependent semi-empirical Hamiltonian. Results of our studies reveal that stabilized SiC graphitic-like layer structures possess the sp2 bonding nature, different from…
We present a first-principles study of the electronic transport properties of micrometer long semiconducting CNTs randomly covered with carbene functional groups. Whereas prior studies suggested that metallic tubes are hardly affected by such addends, we show here that the conductance of semiconducting tubes with standard diameter is on the contrary severely damaged. The configurational averaged conductance as a function of tube diameter and with a coverage of up to one hundred functional groups is extracted. Our results indicate that the search for a conductance-preserving covalent functional…
We present a systematic study on low-frequency current fluctuations of nano-devices consisting of one single semiconducting nanotube, which exhibit significant 1/f-type noise. By examining devices with different switching mechanisms, carrier types (electrons vs. holes), and channel lengths, we show that the 1/f fluctuation level in semiconducting nanotubes is correlated to the total number of transport carriers present in the system. However, the 1/f noise level per carrier is not larger than that of most bulk conventional semiconductors, e.g. Si. The pronounced noise level observed in nanotub…
How carbon nanotubes behave in an external electric field? What will be the relation between the intensity of the electric field and the tube's deformation? What are the geometry effects on the response of carbon nanotubes to electric fields? To answer these questions, we have developed a new combined computational technique to study electrostatic field induced deformations of carbon nanotubes. In this work, we find that the deflection angle of cantilevered semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is proportional to the square of the electric field strength, and the tubes can be most bent…
Charge transport in semiconducting single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) with Schottky-barrier contacts has been studied at high bias. We observe nearly symmetric ambipolar transport with electron and hole currents significantly exceeding 25 micron-ampere, the reported current limit in metallic SWNTs due to optical phonon emission. Four simple models for the field-dependent velocity (ballistic, current saturation, velocity saturation, and constant mobility) are studied in the unipolar regime; the high-bias behavior is best explained by a velocity saturation model with a saturation velocity of 2 x 10…
Coherent one photon ($2 ω$) and two photon ($ ω$) electronic excitations are studied for graphene sheets and for carbon nanotubes using a long wavelength theory for the low energy electronic states. For graphene sheets we find that coherent superposition of these excitations produces a polar asymmetry in the momentum space distribution of the excited carriers with an angular dependence which depends on the relative polarization and phases of the incident fields. For semiconducting nanotubes we find a similar effect which depends on the square of the semiconducting gap, and we calculate its fre…
Efficient and controlled charge transport in networks of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is the basis for their application in electronic devices, especially in field-effect transistors and thermoelectrics. The recent advances in selective growth, purification, and sorting of semiconducting and even monochiral carbon nanotubes have enabled field-effect transistors with high carrier mobilities and on/off current ratios that were impossible a few years ago. They have also allowed researchers to examine the microscopic interplay of parameters such as nanotube length, density, diamet…
We present new data and a compact mobility model for single-wall carbon nanotubes, with only two adjustable parameters, the elastic and inelastic collision mean free paths at 300 K. The mobility increases with diameter, decreases with temperature, and has a more complex dependence on charge density. The model and data suggest the room temperature mobility does not exceed 10,000 cm2/V.s at high carrier density (n > 0.5 nm-1) for typical single-wall nanotube diameters, due to the strong scattering effect of the second subband.
We have assigned the chirality of the internal tubes of double walled carbon nanotubes grown by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using the high sensitivity of the radial breathing mode (RB) in inelastic light scattering experiments. The deduced chirality corresponds to several semiconducting and only two metallic internal tubes. The RB modes are systematically shifted to higher energies when compared to theoretical values. The difference between experimental and theoretical energies of the RB modes of metallic tubes and semiconducting tubes are discussed interms of the reduced interlayer di…
Photoluminescence properties of semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes (s-SWNT) thin films with different metallic single wall carbon nanotubes (m-SWNT) concentrations are reported. s-SWNT purified samples are obtained by polymer assisted selective extraction. We show that a few m-SWNT in the sample generates a drastic quenching of the emission. Therefore, highly purified s-SWNT films are a strongly luminescent material and a good candidate for future applications in photonics, such as near infrared emitters, modulators and detectors.
We use an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tip to locally probe the electronic properties of semiconducting carbon nanotube transistors. A gold-coated AFM tip serves as a voltage or current probe in three-probe measurement setup. Using the tip as a movable current probe, we investigate the scaling of the device properties with channel length. Using the tip as a voltage probe, we study the properties of the contacts. We find that Au makes an excellent contact in the p-region, with no Schottky barrier. In the n-region large contact resistances were found which dominate the transport properties.
The work functions (WF) of single-walled carbon nanotubes and bundles are studied using first principles methods. For individual metallic tubes, the WF is independent of the chirality and increase slightly with tube diameter. For semiconducting tubes, the WF (as defined by the HOMO energy) decreases rapidly. The WF of nanotube bundles ($\sim$ 5 eV) shows no clear dependence on the tube size and chirality, slightly higher than individual tubes. Calculations on finite tubes show no substantial difference in the tube end and the side wall. Upon alkali-metal intercalation, the WF decreases dramati…
Many-electron effects often dramatically modify the properties of reduced dimensional systems. We report calculations, based on an many-electron Green's function approach, of electron-hole interaction effects on the optical spectra of small-diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes. Excitonic effects qualitatively alter the optical spectra of both semiconducting and metallic tubes. Excitons are bound by ~ 1 eV in the semiconducting (8,0) tube and by ~ 100 meV in the metallic (3,3) tube. These large many-electron effects explain the discrepancies between previous theories and experiments.
We have used a femtosecond pump-probe impulsive Raman technique to explore the polarization dependence of coherent optical phonons in highly-purified and aligned semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Coherent phonon spectra for the radial breathing modes (RBMs) exhibit a different monochromatic frequency between the film and solution samples, indicating the presence of differing exciton excitation processes. By varying the polarization of the incident pump beam on the aligned SWCNT film, we found that the anisotropy of the coherent RBM excitation depends on the laser wavelength…
The orbital and spin magnetic properties of iron inside transforming metallic and semiconducting 1D carbon nanotube hybrids are studied by means of local x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and bulk superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements. Nanotube hybrids are initially ferrocene filled single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) of different metallicities. After a high temperature nanochemical reaction ferrocene molecules react with each other to form iron nano clusters. We show that the ferrocenes molecular orbitals interact differently with the SWCNT of different me…
The nature of the primary photoexcitations in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (S-SWCNTs) is of strong current interest. We have studied the emission spectra of S-SWCNTs and two different $π$-conjugated polymers in solutions and films, and have also performed ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy on these systems. The emission spectra relative to the absorption bands are very similar in S-SWCNTs and polymers, with redshifted photoluminescence in films showing exciton migration. The transient photoinduced absorptions (PAs) in SWCNTs and $π$-conjugated polymers are also remarkably simil…
Carbon nanotubes are the focus of considerable research efforts due to their fascinating physical properties. They provide an excellent model system for the study of one dimensional materials and molecular electronics. The chirality of nanotubes can lead to very different electronic behaviours, either metallic or semiconducting. Their electronic spectrum consists of a series of Van Hove singularities defining a bandgap for semiconducting tubes and molecular orbitals at the corresponding energies. A promising way to tune the nanotubes electronic properties for future applications is to use dopi…
Single-walled carbon nanotubes are promising nanoelectronic materials but face long-standing challenges including production of pure semiconducting SWNTs and integration into ordered structures. Here, highly pure semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are separated from bulk materials and self-assembled into densely aligned rafts driven by depletion attraction forces. Microscopy and spectroscopy revealed a high degree of alignment and a high packing density of ~100 tubes/micron within SWNT rafts. Field-effect transistors made from aligned SWNT rafts afforded short channel (~150 nm long)…
The electronic breakdown and the bias dependence of the conductance have been investigated for a large number of catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) grown single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with very small diameters. The convenient fabrication of thousands of properly contacted SWCNTs was possible by growth on electrode structures and subsequent electroless palladium deposition. Almost all of the measured SWCNTs showed at least weak gate dependence at room temperature. Large differences in the conductance and breakdown behavior have been found for "normal" semiconducting SWCNTs and…
We have theoretically investigated the thermoelectric properties of impurity-doped one-dimensional semiconductors, focusing on nitrogen-substituted (N-substituted) carbon nanotubes (CNTs), using the Kubo formula combined with a self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation. N-substituted CNTs exhibit extremely high thermoelectric power factor ($PF$) values originating from a characteristic of one-dimensional materials where decrease in the carrier density increase both the electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient in the low-N regime. The chemical potential dependence of the $PF$ values o…
We theoretically investigate the impact of the electrothermal flow on the dielectrophoretic separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). The electrothermal flow is observed to control the motions of semiconducting SWNTs in a sizeable domain near the electrodes under typical experimental conditions, therefore helping the dielectrophoretic force to attract semiconducting SWNTs in a broader range. Moreover, with the increase of the surfactant concentration, the electrothermal flow is enhanced, and with the change of frequency, the pattern of the electrothermal flow changes. It is shown th…
We investigate the nitrogen substitutional impurity in semiconducting zigzag and metallic armchair single-wall carbon nanotubes using ab initio density functional theory. At low concentrations (less than 1 atomic %), the defect state in a semiconducting tube becomes spatially localized and develops a flat energy level in the band gap. Such a localized state makes the impurity site chemically and electronically active. We find that if two neighboring tubes have their impurities facing one another, an intertube covalent bond forms. This finding opens an intriguing possibility for tunnel junction…
We have studied intersubband decay of E22 excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes experimentally and theoretically. Photoluminescence excitation line widths of semiconducting nanotubes with chiral indicess (n, m) can be mapped onto a connectivity grid with curves of constant (n-m) and (2n+m). Moreover, the global behavior of E22 linewidths is best characterized by a strong increase with energy irrespective of their (n-m) mod(3)= \pm 1 family affiliation. Solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equations shows that the E22 linewidths are dominated by phonon assisted coupling to higher momentum state…
The functionalization of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects creates red-shifted emission features in the near-infrared and boosts their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). While multiple synthetic routes for the selective introduction of sp$^{3}$ defects have been developed, a convenient metric to precisely quantify the number of defects on a SWCNT lattice is not available. Here, we present a direct and simple quantification protocol based on a linear correlation of the integrated Raman D/G$^{+}$ signal ratios and defect densities as ex…
Solution-processed networks of semiconducting, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted considerable attention as materials for next-generation electronic devices and circuits. However, the impact of the SWCNT network composition on charge transport on a microscopic level remains an open and complex question. Here, we use charge-modulated absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy to probe exclusively the mobile charge carriers in monochiral (6,5) and mixed SWCNT network field-effect transistors. Ground state bleaching and charge-induced trion absorption features, as well as e…
The attachment of semiconducting nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes is one of the most challenging subjects in nanotechnology. Successful high coverage attachment and control over the charge transfer mechanism and photo-current generation opens a wide field of new applications such as highly effective solar cells and fibre-enhanced polymers. In this work we study the charge transfer in individual double-wall carbon nanotubes highly covered with uniform ZnO nanoparticles. The synthetic colloidal procedure was chosen to avoid long-chained ligands at the nanoparticle-nanotube interface. The result…
