We have carried out a Schrodinger functional (SF) calculation for the SU(3) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of Wilson fermions in the sextet representation of the gauge group. We find that the discrete beta function, which governs the change in the running coupling under a discrete change of spatial scale, changes sign when the SF renormalized coupling is in the neighborhood of g^2=2.0. The simplest explanation is that the theory has an infrared-attractive fixed point, but more complicated possibilities are allowed by the data. While we compare rescalings by factors of 2 and 4/3, we work at a single lattice spacing.
The observed slow running of the gauge coupling in SU(3) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of color sextet fermions naturally suggests it is a theory with one relevant coupling, the fermion mass, and that at zero mass correlation functions decay algebraically. I perform a finite-size scaling study on simulation data at two values of the bare gauge coupling with this assumption and observe a common exponent for the scaling of the correlation length with the fermion mass, y_m ~ 1.5. An analysis of the scaling of valence Dirac eigenvalues at one of these bare couplings produces a similar numb…
We compute the renormalized running coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 2 flavors of massless Dirac fermions in the 2-index-symmetric (sextet) representation. This model is of particular interest as a minimal realization of the strongly interacting composite Higgs scenario. A recently proposed finite volume gradient flow scheme is used. The calculations are performed at several lattice spacings with two different implementations of the gradient flow allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation and particular attention is paid to estimating the systematic uncertainties. For sma…
We report new results for lattice gauge theories with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental representation and two fermion flavors in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. Both models are important in searching for a viable composite Higgs mechanism in the Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) paradigm. We subject both models to opposite hypotheses inside and outside of the conformal window. In the first hypothesis we test chiral symmetry breaking ($χ{\rm SB}$) with its Goldstone spectrum, $F_π$, the $χ{\rm SB}$ condensate, and several composite hadron s…
I observe a rough volume-dependent scaling of the low eigenvalues of a chiral Dirac operator in lattice studies of SU(3) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of color sextet fermions, in its weak-coupling phase. The mean value of the ith eigenvalue scales with the simulation volume V=L^4 as <lambda_i>L^p ~zeta_i, where zeta_i is a volume-independent constant. The exponent p is about 1.4. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is that p is the leading relevant exponent associated with the fermion mass dependence of correlation functions in a theory whose zero-mass limit is conformal.
The scale-dependent renormalized coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to Nf = 2 flavors of massless Dirac flavors in the sextet representation is presented in the range 0 < g^2 < 6.5. This range includes the location where the beta-function turns zero in the MSbar scheme to 3-loop and 4-loop approximations, however our non-perturbative result shows a monotonically increasing beta-function. Our lattice calclulations are carried out at several lattice spacings allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation. We also comment on a recent similar calculation by Hasenfratz tet al.
We extend our previous study of the SU(3) gauge theory with N_f=2 flavors of fermions in the sextet representation of color. Our tool is the Schroedinger functional method. By changing the lattice action, we push the bulk transition of the lattice theory to stronger couplings and thus reveal the beta function and the mass anomalous dimension gamma_m over a wider range of coupling, out to g^2 ~ 11. Our results are consistent with an infrared fixed point, but walking is not ruled out. Our main result is that gamma_m never exceeds 0.45, making the model unsuitable for walking technicolor. We use …
As a follow up to the previous talk about the beta function of SU(3) gauge theory with Nf=2 symmetric representation (clover) fermions [arXiv:0809.2885 [hep-lat]], we describe our explorations of the beta-kappa plane, away from the massless limit. Our simulations are mostly done on lattices of length L=8 and 12. We observe a phase transition from a strong coupling confined phase to a deconfined, chirally restored phase. The line of transitions avoids (so far) the location of the infrared fixed point discussed in the last talk.
The Electroweak interactions of a strongly coupled gauge theory are discussed with outlook beyond the Standard Model (BSM) under global and gauge anomaly constraints. The theory is built on a minimal massless fermion doublet of the SU(2) BSM flavor group (bsm-flavor) with a confining gauge force at the TeV scale in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the BSM SU(3) color gauge group (bsm-color). The intriguing possibility of near-conformal sextet gauge dynamics could lead to the minimal realization of the composite Higgs mechanism with a light $0^{++}$ scalar, far separated from …
The SU(3) gauge theory with fermions in the sextet representation is one of several theories of interest for technicolor models. We have carried out a Schrodinger functional (SF) calculation for the lattice theory with two flavors of Wilson fermions. We find that the discrete beta function changes sign when the SF renormalized coupling is in the neighborhood of g^2 = 2.0, showing a breakdown of the perturbative picture even though the coupling is weak. The most straightforward interpretation is an infrared-stable fixed point.
We report extended simulation results and their new analysis in two important gauge theories with twelve fermion flavors in the fundamental SU(3) color representation and two fermions in the sextet representation. We probe the $N_f=12$ model with respect to the conformal window using mass deformed finite size scaling (FSS) theory driven by the fermion mass anomalous dimension. Our results at fixed gauge coupling show problems with the conformal scenario of the $N_f=12$ model. In the sextet model with two flavors, under the conformal hypothesis, we determine large values for the anomalous fermi…
The frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group is investigated \cite{Fodor:2012ty}. The chiral condensate and the mass spectrum are consistent with chiral symmetry breaking at vanishing fermion mass. In contrast, sextet fermion mass deformations of spectral properties are not consistent with leading conformal scaling behavior near the critical surface of a conformal theory. A recent paper \cite{DeGrand:2012yq} which could not resolve the conformal fixed point of the gauge…
New results are reported from large scale lattice simulations of a frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group. We find that the chiral condensate and the mass spectrum of the sextet model are consistent with chiral symmetry breaking in the limit of vanishing fermion mass. In contrast, sextet fermion mass deformations of spectral properties are not consistent with leading conformal scaling behavior near the critical surface of a conformal theory. A recent paper could not r…
We discuss near-conformal gauge theories beyond the standard model (BSM) where interesting results on the twelve-flavor $β$-function of massless fermions in the fundamental representation of the SU(3) color gauge group and dilaton tests of the light scalar with two massless fermions in the two-index symmetric tensor (sextet) representation can be viewed as parts of the same BSM paradigm under investigation. We report results from high precision analysis of the twelve-flavor $β$-function \cite{Fodor:2016zil} refuting its published IRFP \cite{Cheng:2014jba,Hasenfratz:2016dou}. We present our obj…
I report the results of Schroedinger functional calculations in the SU(3) gauge theory with two flavors of color sextet fermions, defined with the Wilson-clover action using nHYP fat links. While we cannot confirm the infrared fixed point seen with thin links, we find very slow evolution of the coupling constant, so slow that extraction of the mass anomalous dimension is straightforward.
Results are reported for the beta-function of weakly coupled conformal gauge theories on the lattice, SU(3) with Nf=14 fundamental and Nf=3 sextet fermions. The models are chosen to be close to the upper end of the conformal window where perturbation theory is reliable hence a fixed point is expected. The study serves as a test of how well lattice methods perform in the weakly coupled conformal cases. We also comment on the 5-loop beta-function of two models close to the lower end of the conformal window, SU(3) with Nf=12 fundamental and Nf=2 sextet fermions.
We study QCD with 2 and 3 flavours of colour-sextet quarks. The 2-flavour theory is a candidate Walking Technicolor theory. Since we are attempting to distinguish whether this theory is walking or conformal, we also study the 3-flavour theory, which is believed to be conformal, for comparison. We simulate lattice QCD with 2 and 3 flavours of colour-sextet staggered quarks at finite temperatures to determine the scales of confinement and chiral-symmetry breaking from the positions of the deconfinement and chiral-symmetry restoration transitions. Unlike the case with fundamental quarks, these tr…
We study the color-dependent confining forces between two quarks by the quenched lattice simulations of Coulomb gauge QCD. The color-singlet and color-antitriplet instantaneous potentials yield attractive forces. The ratio of the string tensions obtained from them is approximately 2 and have little volume dependence. Meanwhile, the color-octet and color-sextet channels give a minor contribution for two-quark system. We finally find that the infrared self-energy of the color-nonsinglet channels diverges in the infinite volume limit; however, the degree of the divergence on the finite lattice ca…
QCD with 2 massless colour-sextet quarks is studied as a model of Walking Technicolor. We simulate lattice QCD with 2 light color-sextet staggered quarks at finite temperature, and use the dependence of the coupling at the chiral transition on the temporal extent, $N_t$, of the lattice in lattice units to study the running of the bare lattice coupling with lattice spacing. Our goal is to determine whether this theory is QCD-like and `walks', or if it is conformal. If it is QCD-like, the coupling at the chiral transition should tend to zero as $N_t \rightarrow \infty$ in a manner controlled by …
We summarize our recent work on gauge theories with two flavors of fermions in the two-index symmetric representation: SU(2) gauge theory with adjoint fermions, SU(3) with sextets, and SU(4) with ten-dimensional-representation fermions. All three systems have beta functions smaller than their perturbative value, approaching a fixed point near the expected two-loop zero. In all cases the mass anomalous dimension is small, under 0.5.
We describe a new method to determine non-perturbatively the beta function of a gauge theory using lattice simulations in the p-regime of the theory. This complements alternative measurements of the beta function working directly at zero fermion mass and bridges the gap between the weak coupling perturbative regime and the strong coupling regime relevant to the mass spectrum of the theory. We apply this method to ${\mathrm {SU(3)} }$ gauge theory with two fermion flavors in the 2-index symmetric (sextet) representation. We find that the beta function is small but non-zero at the renormalized c…
The methods of lattice gauge theory may be applied to gauge theories besides QCD, in fact to any gauge group and any representation of matter fields (as long as the coupling is not chiral). Such theories are useful for model building beyond the Standard Model, for instance in technicolor models. We have carried out Monte Carlo simulations of the SU(3) gauge theory with color sextet fermions. Our result for its discrete beta function indicate an infrared fixed point that makes the theory conformal rather than confining. The lattice theory's phase diagram shows no separation of chiral and confin…
We analyze three sets of gauge ensembles in our extended physics program of a particularly important BSM gauge theory with a fermion doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) BSM color gauge group. Our investigations include chiral symmetry breaking $\rm{(χSB)}$ in the p-regime and $ε$-regime, the mass of the composite ${\rm 0^{++}}$ scalar, resonance spectroscopy, new physics from gauge anomaly constraints, and the role of stable sextet BSM baryons with Electroweak interactions in dark matter searches. Important new goals include studies of the ${\rm 0^{++}}$ sca…
We investigate chemical-potential (μ) dependence of static-quark free energies in both the real and imaginary μregions, performing lattice QCD simulations at imaginary μand extrapolating the results to the real μregion with analytic continuation. Lattice QCD calculations are done on a 16^{3}\times 4 lattice with the clover-improved two-flavor Wilson fermion action and the renormalization-group improved Iwasaki gauge action. Static-quark potential is evaluated from the Polyakov-loop correlation functions in the deconfinement phase. As the analytic continuation, the potential calculated at imagi…
For the first time, we compute three-loop contributions to all triple vertices in QCD at the symmetric point. The analytic results are obtained in massless QCD with an arbitrary color group in the Landau gauge. All new loop integrals are expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms at the sixth root of unity. These corrections allow us to derive expressions for the four-loop QCD beta function in a set of momentum-subtraction schemes.
We compute the renormalized running coupling of SU(3) gauge theory coupled to N_f = 8 flavors of massless fundamental Dirac fermions. The recently proposed finite volume gradient flow scheme is used. The calculations are performed at several lattice spacings allowing for a controlled continuum extrapolation. The results for the discrete beta-function show that it is monotonic without any sign of a fixed point in the range of couplings we cover. As a cross check the continuum results are compared with the well-known perturbative continuum beta-function for small values of the renormalized coupl…
We study the dynamics of SU(2) gauge theory with NF=6 Dirac fermions by means of lattice simulation to investigate if they are appropriate to realization of electroweak symmetry breaking. The discrete analogue of beta function for the running coupling constant defined under the Schroedinger functional boundary condition are computed on the lattices up to linear size of L/a=24 and preclude the existence of infrared fixed point below 7.6. Gluonic observables such as heavy quark potential, string tension, Polyakov loop suggest that the target system is in the confining phase even in the massless …
A holographic model of chiral symmetry breaking is used to study the dynamics plus the meson and baryon spectrum of the underlying strong dynamics in composite Higgs models. The model is inspired by top-down D-brane constructions. We introduce this model by applying it to $N_f=2$ QCD. We compute meson masses, decay constants and the nucleon mass. The spectrum is improved by including higher dimensional operators to reflect the UV physics of QCD. Moving to composite Higgs models, we impose perturbative running for the anomalous dimension of the quark condensate in a variety of theories with var…
The frequently discussed strongly interacting gauge theory with a fermion flavor doublet in the two-index symmetric (sextet) representation of the SU(3) color gauge group is investigated. In previous studies the chiral condensate and the mass spectrum were shown to be consistent with chiral symmetry breaking ($χ$SB) at vanishing fermion mass. The recently reported $β$-function is not inconsistent with this observation, suggesting that the model is very close to the conformal window and a light "Higgs impostor" could emerge as a composite state. In this work we describe the methodology and prel…
We introduce a generalized Maximum Abelian Gauge (MAG). We work with this new gauge on 12^4 lattices for beta=5.7,5.8 and 16^4 lattices for beta=5.9,6.0. We also introduce a form of abelian projection related to the generalized MAG. We measure U(1)xU(1) wilson loops and single color magnetic current densities.
We calculate, to 3 loops in perturbation theory, the bare $β$-function of QCD, formulated on the lattice with the clover fermionic action. The dependence of our result on the number of colors $N$, the number of fermionic flavors $N_f$, as well as the clover parameter $c_{SW}$, is shown explicitly. A direct outcome of our calculation is the two-loop relation between the bare coupling constant $g_0$ and the one renormalized in the MS-bar scheme. Further, we can immediately derive the three-loop correction to the relation between the lattice $Λ$-parameter and $g_0$, which is important in checks o…
We calculate the relation between the bare coupling constant g_0 and the MSbar-renormalized coupling g_MS: g_0 = Z_g(g_0,a μ) g_MS, to 2 loops in perturbation theory. We employ the standard Wilson action for gluons and the overlap action for fermions. For convenience, we have worked with the background field technique, which only requires evaluation of 2-point Green's function for the problem at hand. Our results depend explicitly on the number of fermion flavors (N_f) and colors (N). Since the dependence of Z_g on the overlap parameter rho cannot be extracted analytically, we tabulate our res…
The zero momentum sectors in effective theories of three dimensional QCD coupled to pseudoreal (two colors) and real (adjoint) quarks in a classically parity-invariant manner have alternative descriptions in terms of orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, we compute finite-volume QCD partition functions and correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues in a presence of finite quark masses of the order of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue. These novel correlation functions, expressed in terms of quaternion determinants, are reduced to conventional r…
The zero momentum sectors in effective theories of QCD coupled to pseudoreal (two colors) and real (adjoint) quarks have alternative descriptions in terms of chiral orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of random matrices. Using this correspondence, we compute correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues within a sector with an arbitrary topological charge in a presence of finite quark masses of the order of the smallest Dirac eigenvalue. These novel correlation functions, expressed in terms of Pfaffians, interpolate between known results for the chiral and quenched limits as quark masses…
This work presents the calculation of the relation between the bare coupling constant g_0 and the MSbar-renormalized coupling g_MS, g_0 = Z_g(g_0,aμ) g_MS, to 2 loops in perturbation theory, with fermions in an arbitrary representation of the gauge group SU(N). Our calculation is performed using overlap fermions and Wilson gluons, and the background field technique has been chosen for convenience. The corresponding results in the fundamental representation appear in our longer publication [arXiv:0709.4368]. The 3-loop coefficient of the bare beta-function, b_2^L, is extracted using the 2-loop …
We briefly report our calculation of the 2-loop coefficient of the coupling constant renormalization function Z_g in lattice perturbation theory. The quantity under study is defined through g_0 = Z_g g, where g_0 (g) is the bare (renormalized) coupling constant. The 2-loop expression for Z_g can be directly related to the 3-loop bare beta-function beta_L(g_0). Our calculation is performed using overlap fermions and Wilson gluons, and the background field technique has been chosen for convenience. Our results depend explicitly on the number of fermion flavors (N_f) and colors (N). Since the dep…
We present numerical results in SU(2) lattice gauge theory for the instantaneous part of the gluon propagator in Coulomb gauge D_{44, inst} = V_{coul}(R) δ(t). Data are taken on lattice volumes 24^4 and 28^4 for 7 values of beta in the interval $2.2 \leq beta \leq 2.8$. The data are confronted with the confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge. They are consistent with a linearly rising color-Coulomb potential V_{coul}(R).
We calculate the 3-loop bare $β$-function of QCD, formulated on the lattice with the clover fermionic action. The dependence of our result on the number of colors $N$, the number of fermionic flavors $N_f$, and the clover parameter $c_{SW}$, is shown explicitly. A direct outcome of our calculation is the two-loop relation between the bare coupling constant $g_0$ and the one renormalized in the MS-bar scheme. Further, we can immediately derive the three-loop correction to the relation between the lattice $Λ$-parameter and $g_0$, which turns out to be very pronounced. We also calculate the criti…
