We study the color-dependent confining forces between two quarks by the quenched lattice simulations of Coulomb gauge QCD. The color-singlet and color-antitriplet instantaneous potentials yield attractive forces. The ratio of the string tensions obtained from them is approximately 2 and have little volume dependence. Meanwhile, the color-octet and color-sextet channels give a minor contribution for two-quark system. We finally find that the infrared self-energy of the color-nonsinglet channels diverges in the infinite volume limit; however, the degree of the divergence on the finite lattice can be understood in terms of color factors.
We study the thermodynamics of two-color QCD at high temperature and/or density using a dimensionally reduced superrenormalizable effective theory, formulated in terms of a coarse grained Wilson line. In the absence of quarks, the theory is required to respect the Z(2) center symmetry, while the effects of quarks of arbitrary masses and chemical potentials are introduced via soft Z(2) breaking operators. Perturbative matching of the effective theory parameters to the full theory is carried out explicitly, and it is argued how the new theory can be used to explore the phase diagram of two-color…
We present an update on the phase diagram of two-color QCD from a chiral effective model approach based on a quark-meson-diquark model using the Functional Renormalization Group (FRG). We discuss the impact of perturbative UV contributions, the inclusion of gauge field dynamics via a phenomenological Polyakov loop potential, and the impact of matter backcoupling on the gauge sector. The corresponding phase diagram including these effects is found to be in qualitative agreement with recent lattice investigations.
In color SU(2) lattice QCD, we investigate colored-diquark distributions in two-hadron scatterings by means of Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes on the lattice. With colored-diquark operators in the Coulomb gauge, we measure components of two colored diquarks realized as intermediate states via one gluon exchange (OGE) processes in hadron scattering. From the colored-diquark distributions, we estimate the dominant range of gluon (color) exchanges between closely located two hadrons. We find that the colored-diquark components are enhanced at the short range ($\leq$0.2 fm) and their tails show the sing…
We analyze the screening of static diquark sources in 2-flavor QCD and compare results with the screening of static quark-antiquark pairs. We show that a two quark system in a fixed color representations is screened at short distances like a single quark source in the same color representation whereas at large distances the two quarks are screened independently. At high temperatures we observe that the relative strength of the interaction in diquark and quark-antiquark systems, respectively, obeys Casimir scaling. We use this result to examine the possible existence of heavy quark-quark bound …
2-color QCD, i. e. QCD with the gauge group SU(2), is the simplest non-Abelian gauge theory without sign problem at finite quark density. Therefore its study on the lattice is a benchmark for other non-perturbative approaches at finite density. To provide such benchmarks we determine the minimal-Landau-gauge 2-point and 3-gluon correlation functions of the gauge sector and the running gauge coupling at finite density. We observe no significant effects, except for some low-momentum screening of the gluons at and above the supposed high-density phase transition.
Colorelectric and Colormagnetic structure of the flux tubes, connecting heavy quark and antiquark, is investigated in the framework of the Field Correlator method which describes all resulting fields in terms of correlators $D^E$ and $D^E_1$. The latter have been computed via gluelumps, which allows to predict the resulting distribution of color fields $\mathbf{E} (\mathbf{r}),$ and colormagnetic currents $\mathbf{k} (\mathbf{r})$ in the flux tubes. It is shown, that at large distances $r\gg λ\approx 0.2$ fm the whole structure of fields and relations between them is similar to that of the dua…
The method of analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potentials $μ$ is one of the few available techniques to study QCD at finite temperature and baryon density. One of its most appealing applications is the determination of the critical line for small $μ$: we perform a direct test of the validity of the method in this case by studying two-color QCD, where the sign problem is absent. The (pseudo)critical line is found to be analytic around $μ^2 = 0$, but a very large precision would be needed at imaginary $μ$ to correctly predict the location of the critical line at real $μ$.
We study the QCD color interactions between static two heavy quarks at zero temperature in a quenched SU(3) lattice gauge simulation: in addition to the standard singlet $q\bar{q}$ potentials, we calculate octet $q\bar{q}$ potentials, symmetric and antisymmetric $qq$ potentials. It is shown that the antisymmetric $qq$ channel behaves as a linearly rising potential at large quark separations. We further find that the $q\bar{q}$ octet and $qq$ symmetric channels have the complex dependence on the distance; at short distances they are repulsive forces, while at large distances, they show linearly…
We study two colors lattice QCD (QC$_2$D) with two flavors of staggered fermions on $40^4$ and $32^4$ lattices with lattice spacing $a =0.048$~fm in the wide range of the quark chemical potential $μ_q$. Our focus is on the confinement-deconfinement transition in this theory. Thus we compute the string tension from the Wilson loops and the static quark free energy from the Polyakov loops. We find that the deconfinement transition found earlier in the range $μ_q \approx 800 - 1000$ MeV is shifted to higher values. This shift is attributed to decreasing of the lattice spacing used in our simulati…
We calculate the equation of state at non-zero temperature and density from first principles in two-, three- and four-color QCD with two fermion flavors in the fundamental and two-index, antisymmetric representation. By matching low-energy results (from a `hadron resonance gas') to high-energy results from (resummed) perturbative QCD, we obtain results for the pressure and trace anomaly that are in quantitative agreement with full lattice-QCD studies for three colors at zero chemical potential. Our results for non-zero chemical potential at zero temperature constitute predictions for the equat…
We construct a low energy effective Lagrangian for the two-color QCD including the "vector" bosons (mesons with J^P=1^- and diquark baryons with J^P=1^+) in addition to the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons with a degenerate mass M_π(mesons with J^P=0^- and baryons with J^P=0^+) based on the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of SU(2N_f) \to Sp(2N_f) in the framework of the hidden local symmetry. We investigate the dependence of the "vector" boson masses on the baryon number density μ_B. We show that the μ_B-dependence signals the phase transition of U(1)_B breaking. We find that it gives informatio…
We study the confining properties of QCD with two colors across the finite density phase transition. A disorder parameter detecting dual superconductivity of the QCD vacuum is used as a probe for the confinement/deconfinement phase transition.
We discuss a few aspects of the phase diagram of two color lattice QCD: we investigate the long distance screening analyzing the behavior of the interquark potential at large distances; we present a first set of results for vector mesons and diquarks; we note similarities and differences between features at high temperature and high baryon density.
QCD at high chemical potential has interesting properties such as deconfinement of quarks. Two-color QCD, which enables numerical simulations on the lattice, constitutes a laboratory to study QCD at high chemical potential. Among the interesting properties of two-color QCD at high density is the diquark condensation, for which we present recent results obtained on a finer lattice compared to previous studies. The quark propagator in two-color QCD at non-zero chemical potential is referred to as the Gor'kov propagator. We express the Gor'kov propagator in terms of form factors and present recen…
We study SU(2) color QCD with even number of quark flavors. First, using QCD inequalities we show that at finite baryon chemical potential mu, condensation must occur in the channel with scalar diquark quantum numbers. This breaks the U(1) symmetry generated by baryon charge (baryon superconductivity). Then we derive the effective Lagrangian describing low lying meson and baryon excitations using extended local chiral symmetry of the theory. This enables us to determine the leading term in the dependence of the masses on mu exactly.
Common lore suggests that $N$-color QCD with massive quarks has no useful order parameters which can be non-trivial at zero baryon density. However, such order parameters do exist when there are $n_f$ quark flavors with a common mass and $d\equiv\gcd(n_f,N) > 1$. These theories have a $\mathbb Z_d$ color-flavor center symmetry arising from intertwined color center transformations and cyclic flavor permutations. The symmetry realization depends on the temperature, baryon chemical potential and value of $n_f/N$, with implications for conformal window studies and dense quark matter.
We present a new dual representation for lattice QCD in terms of wordlines and worldsheets. The exact reformulation is carried out using the recently developed abelian color flux method where the action is decomposed into commuting minimal terms that connect different colors on neighboring sites. Expanding the Boltzmann factors for these commuting terms allows one to reorganize the gauge field contributions according to links such that the gauge fields can be integrated out in closed form. The emerging constraints give the dual variables the structure of worldlines for the fermions and worldsh…
We determine the pseudo-critical line in the temperature - chemical potential plane of 2-color QCD by direct Monte Carlo simulations and by analytic continuation from imaginary chemical potential.
We investigate the effects of several Abelian external fluxes $ϕ$, on the Euclidean Dirac spectrum of light quarks in QCD with two colors. Our results provide for a novel way of assessing the pion weak decay constant directly from spectral fluctuations, and discriminating a flux-rich from a flux-poor vacuum, using QCD lattice simulations.
We test the method of analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential in two-color QCD, which is free from the sign problem. In particular, we consider the analytic continuation of the critical line to real values of the chemical potential.
We investigate the effects of several Abelian Aharonov-Bohm fluxes $ϕ$ on the Euclidean Dirac spectrum of light quarks in QCD with two colors. A quantitative change in the quark return probability is caused by the fluxes, resulting into a change of the spectral correlations. These changes are controlled by a universal function of $σ_L ϕ^2$ where $σ_L$ is the pertinent Ohmic conductance. The quark return probability is sensitive to Abelian flux-disorder but not to $Z_2$ flux-disorder in the ergodic and diffusive regime, and may be used as a probe for the nature of the confining fields in the QC…
The heavy quarkonium spectrum of Two Color QCD (QC$_2$D) at non-zero quark chemical potential $μ$ and temperature $T$ with $μ/T\gg1$ has been calculated in both $S$- and $P$-wave channels using a lattice non-relativistic formulation of QC$_2$D. As $μ$ is varied, the quarkonium spectra reveal three separate regions, corroborating previous findings that there are three distinct physical regimes of QC$_2$D at low temperature and high baryon density: hadronic matter, quark/quarkyonic matter, and deconfined matter. The results are interpreted in terms of the formation of heavy-light $Qq$ states in …
We investigate quantum chromodynamics with two colors at nonvanishing density using Dyson-Schwinger equations. Lattice methods do not have a complex action problem in this theory. Thus, we can benchmark our results and the effect of truncations directly by comparing with the corresponding lattice results. We do so for the gluon propagator, the chiral condensate, and the quark number density and test variations of the employed truncation to improve the agreement. Finally, we compare the effect of a truncation on the chiral and confinement/deconfinement transitions in the phase diagrams of QCD a…
We use chiral perturbation theory to study the extraction of pion electromagnetic polarizabilities from lattice QCD. Chiral extrapolation formulae are derived for partially quenched QCD, and quenched QCD simulations. On a torus, volume dependence of electromagnetic observables is complicated by SO(4) breaking, as well as photon zero-mode interactions. We determine finite volume corrections to the Compton scattering tensor of pions. We argue, however, that such results cannot be used to ascertain volume corrections to polarizabilities determined in lattice QCD with background field methods. Con…
The phase structure of two-color QCD is examined as a function of the chemical potential and the number of light quark flavors. We consider effective Lagrangians for two-color QCD containing the Goldstone excitations, spin-one particles and negative intrinsic parity terms. We discuss the possibility of a conformal phase transition and the enhancement of the global symmetries as the number of flavors is increased. The effects of a quark chemical potential on the spin-one particles and on the negative intrinsic parity terms are analyzed. It is shown that the phase diagram that is predicted by th…
We investigate the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in two color QCD at finite chemical potential. The profiles of complex eigenvalues close to the origin are compared to a complex generalization of the chiral Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble, confirming its predictions for weak and strong non-Hermiticity. They differ from the QCD symmetry class with three colors by a level repulsion from both the real and imaginary axis.
We report on evidence that confinement is related to dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD, as in quenched QCD. The vacuum is a dual superconductor in the confining phase, whilst the U(1) magnetic symmetry is realized a la Wigner in the deconfined phase.
We analytically study two-color QCD with an even number of flavors at high baryon density. This theory is free from the fermion sign problem. Chiral symmetry is broken spontaneously by the diquark condensate. Based on the symmetry breaking pattern we construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We identify a new epsilon-regime at high baryon density in which the quark mass dependence of the partition function can be determined exactly. We also derive Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules for the complex eigenvalues of the Dirac operator in terms of the fermi…
We study the cold and dense regime in the phase diagram of two-color QCD with heavy quarks within a three-dimensional effective theory for Polyakov loops. This theory is derived from two-color QCD in a combined strong-coupling and hopping expansion. In particular, we study the onset of diquark density as the finite-density transition of the bosonic baryons in the two-color world. In contrast to previous studies of heavy dense QCD, our zero-temperature extrapolations are consistent with a continuous transition without binding energy. They thus provide evidence that the effective theory for heav…
We present results of simulations of Two Color QCD using two flavors of Wilson quark in the fundamental representation, at non-zero quark chemical potential mu, on an 8^3x16 lattice. Results for the quark number density, quark and gluon energy densities, and superfluid condensate are qualitatively distinct from the behaviour expected on the assumption that the dominant degrees of freedom are tightly bound scalar diquarks which Bose condense; rather the scaling with mu is more suggestive of a Fermi surface disrupted by a Cooper pair condensate. We also present evidence both for screening of the…
We report on evidence from lattice simulations that confinement is produced by dual superconductivity of the vacuum in full QCD as in quenched QCD. Preliminary information is obtained on the order of the deconfining phase transition.
We discuss a random matrix theory that was originally constructed to describe two-color QCD at low density in the phase with a nonzero chiral condensate. With a particular choice of a parameter, the same random matrix theory also describes the high-density phase of two-color QCD. In this phase a BCS superfluid of diquark pairs is formed, and the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is very different from that at low density. Analytical results for the spectral density obtained from this random matrix theory allow for the extraction of the BCS gap from lattice data.
The method of analytical continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is tested in 2-color QCD. In comparison to previous studies in the same theory, an exact updating algorithm is used and simulations are performed closer to the thermodynamic limit. It is shown that the method considerably improves if suitable functions are used to interpolate data with imaginary chemical potential.
Two-color finite density QCD is free from the sign problem, and it is thus regarded as a good model to check the validity of the analytic continuation method. We study the method in terms of the corresponding chiral random matrix model. It is found that at temperatures slightly higher than the pseudo critical temperature, the ratio type of extrapolated function works well in accordance with the results of the Monte Carlo simulations.
Using the lattice gauge field theory, we study the relation among the local chiral condensate, monopoles, and color magnetic fields in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). First, we investigate idealized Abelian gauge systems of 1) a static monopole-antimonopole pair and 2) a magnetic flux without monopoles, on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In these systems, we calculate the local chiral condensate on quasi-massless fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge field, and find that the chiral condensate is localized in the vicinity of the magnetic field. Second, using SU(3) lattice QCD Monte Carlo ca…
We investigate the temperature and density dependence of the color flux tube structure of dense two-color QCD with $N_f = 2$ Wilson fermions by using a lattice simulation. From Refs. [1] and [2], we have already clarified the rich phase structure in the low temperature region, including the hadronic and superfluid phases. In this study we measure the quark-antiquark potential and color flux tube profiles in such a low temperature region and find that even in the high density superfluid phase, the color electric field is squeezed into a flux tube as in the low density hadronic phase.
We investigate the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in full QCD with two colors and finite chemical potential. Along the strong-coupling axis up to the temperature phase transition, the low-lying Dirac spectrum is well described by random matrix theory (RMT) and exhibits universal behavior. The situation is discussed in the chirally symmetric phase and no universality is seen for the microscopic spectral density.
2-color QCD (quantum chromodynamics with N_c=2) at finite temperature T and chemical potential μis revisited in the strong coupling limit on the lattice with staggered fermions. The phase structure in the space of T, μ, and the quark mass m is elucidated with the use of the mean field approximation and the 1/d expansion (d being the number of spatial dimensions). We put special emphasis on the interplay among the chiral condensate <\bar{q}q>, the diquark condensate <qq>, and the quark density <q^{\dagger}q> in the T-μ-m space. Simple analytic formulae are also derived without assuming μnor m b…
We perform path integral for a quark (antiquark) in the presence of an arbitrary space-dependent static color potential A^a_0(x)(=-\int dx E^a(x)) with arbitrary color index a=1,2,...8 in SU(3) and obtain an exact non-perturbative expression for the generating functional. We show that such a path integration is possible even if one can not solve the Dirac equation in the presence of arbitrary space-dependent potential. It may be possible to further explore this path integral technique to study non-perturbative bound state formation.
We present first results on the dynamics of monopoles in full QCD with N_f=2 flavors of dynamical quarks. Among the quantities being studied are the monopole density and the monopole screening length, the static potential as well as the profile of the color electric flux tube. Furthermore, we derive the low-energy effective monopole action.
We investigate the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in Coulomb gauge QCD using quenched SU(3) lattice simulation. In the confinement phase, we observe the accumulation of the near-zero modes of the FP operator at large lattice volumes, and the color-Coulomb self-energy diverges in the infrared limit. Moreover, even in the deconfinement phase, the behavior of the FP eigenvalue density is qualitatively the same as in the confinement phase and the color-Coulomb self-energy is infrared divergent.
The method of analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is one of the most powerful tools to circumvent the sign problem in lattice QCD. Here we test this method in a theory, 2-color QCD, which is free from the sign problem. We find that the method gives reliable results, within appropriate ranges of the chemical potential, and that a considerable improvement can be achieved if suitable functions are used to interpolate data with imaginary chemical potential.
We consider antisymmetric perturbations of real symmetric matrices in the context of random matrix theory and two-color quantum chromodynamics. We investigate the level spacing distributions of eigenvalues that remain real or become complex conjugate pairs under the perturbation. We work out analytical surmises from small matrices and show that they describe the level spacings of large random matrices. As expected from symmetry arguments, these level spacings also apply to the overlap Dirac operator for two-color QCD with chemical potential.
We obtain the equation of state (EoS) and the sound velocity for 2-color QCD at low temperature and high density and find that in the superfluid phase, $c_s^2/c^2 >1/3$, where $1/3$ is the value at the relativistic limit. Several independent Monte Carlo studies on 2-color QCD have been conducted intensively in recent years. These works have shown a clear evidence of phase transition between hadronic and superfluid phases. In our paper[1], we have investigated the EoS and sound velocity in both phases. Our result is consistent with chiral perturbation theory in a low $μ$ regime of the superflui…
We identify a non-Hermitian chiral random matrix theory that corresponds to two-color QCD at high density. We show that the partition function of the random matrix theory coincides with the partition function of the finite-volume effective theory at high density, and that the Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules of the random matrix theory are identical to those derived from the effective theory. The microscopic Dirac spectrum of the theory is governed by the BCS gap, rather than the conventional chiral condensate. We also show that with a different choice of a parameter the random matrix …
Inspired by a recent proposal for a Higgs description of QCD we study the possible formation of a color-octet/flavor-octet quark-anti-quark condensate in the instanton liquid model. For this purpose we calculate two-point correlation functions of color-singlet and octet quark-anti-quark operators. We find long range order in the standard $<\barψψ>$ channel, but not in the color-octet channel. We emphasize that similar calculations in lattice QCD can check whether or not a color-flavor locked Higgs phase is realized in QCD at zero temperature and baryon density.
The phase diagram of two-color QCD with a chiral chemical potential is studied on the lattice. The focus is on the confinement/deconfinement phase transition and the breaking/restoration of chiral symmetry. The simulations are carried out with dynamical staggered fermions without rooting. The dependence of the Polyakov loop, the chiral condensate and the corresponding susceptibilities on the chiral chemical potential and the temperature are presented.
Approximating the sum over all gauge field configurations in the QCD partition function by a liquid of instantons, we calculate the spectrum of the Dirac operator for two and three colors and for 0, 1 and 2 flavors. We find a remarkable difference in the spectrum near zero virtuality between 2 and 3 colors, which can be explained in terms of chiral random matrix theory. For two colors the Dirac operator is real, and the appropriate random matrix ensemble has real matrix elements. For three colors the Dirac operator is complex, and the spectrum can be described by a random matrix ensemble with …
We analyze the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in two-color QCD at nonzero baryon density when the eigenvalues become complex. The quasi-zero modes and their role for chiral symmetry breaking and the deconfinement transition are examined. The bulk of the spectrum and its relation to quantum chaos is considered. A comparison with predictions from random matrix theory is presented. An analogous analysis is performed for the spectrum of the Gor'kov representation of the fermionic action.
The color-flavor transformation for the unitary group (Zirnbauer 1996) is extended to the special unitary group. The resulting partition function is represented as sum over disconnected sectors characterized by a U(1)-charge. Application to low energy QCD on a lattice leads to a theory where the inverse number of colors appears as expansion parameter. We use a saddle point approximation to estimate the partition function both in the pure mesonic sector and in the case of a single baryon on a mesonic background.
We report on our analytical study of two-color QCD with an even number of flavors at high baryon density. Based on the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking induced by BCS-type diquark pairing we construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We also identify a new epsilon-regime at high baryon density and derive Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules for the complex eigenvalues of the Dirac operator in terms of the fermion gap. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice QCD simulations.
In this work we study the finite temperature SU(2) gauge theory with staggered fermions for real and imaginary chemical potential. We test the method of analytical continuation of Monte Carlo results obtained for imaginary chemical potential, by comparison with those obtained {\em directly} for real chemical potential.
We study correlation functions of spatially separated static quark-antiquark pairs in $2+1$ flavor QCD in order to investigate the nature of color screening at high temperatures. We perform lattice calculations in a wide temperature range, $116~\text{MeV} \leq T \leq 5814~\text{MeV}$, using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action and several lattice spacings to control discretization effects. We alleviate the UV noise problem through the use of four dimensional hypercubic (HYP) smearing, which enables the reconstruction of correlators and determination of screening properties even at…
Using two-color lattice QCD with Wilson fermions, we report a study of the finite baryon number density system with two-flavors. First we investigate the Polyakov line and thermodynamical uantities in the $(κ,μ)$ plane, where $κ$ and $μ$ are the hopping parameter and chemical potential in the fermion action, respectively. Then we calculate propagators of meson ($\bar{q}Γq$) and baryon ($qΓq$) states. We find that the vector meson propagators are strongly modified in large $μ$ regions, indicating the reduction of the mass. This anomalous behavior of the vector meson is observed for the first ti…
The phase diagram of two-color QCD with non-zero chiral chemical potential is studied by means of lattice simulation. We focus on the influence of a chiral chemical potential on the confinement/deconfinement phase transition and the breaking/restoration of chiral symmetry. The simulation is carried out with dynamical staggered fermions without rooting. The dependences of the Polyakov loop, the chiral condensate and the corresponding susceptibilities on the chiral chemical potential and the temperature are presented. The critical temperature is observed to increase with increasing chiral chemic…
We investigate the eigenvalue spectrum of the staggered Dirac matrix in SU(3) and U(1) gauge theory as well as in full QCD with two colors and finite chemical potential. Along the strong-coupling axis up to the phase transition, the low-lying Dirac spectrum of these quantum field theories is well described by random matrix theory and exhibits universal behavior. Related results for gauge theories with minimal coupling are discussed in the chirally symmetric phase and no universality is seen for the microscopic spectral densities.
We determine the scale setting function and the pseudo-critical temperature on the lattice in $N_f=2$ two-color QCD using the Iwasaki gauge and Wilson fermion actions. Although two-color QCD does not correspond to the real world, it is very useful as a good testing ground for three-color QCD. The scale setting function gives the relative lattice spacings of simulations performed at different values of the bare coupling. It is a necessary tool for taking the continuum limit. Firstly, we measure the meson spectra for various combinations of ($β,κ$) and find a line of constant physics in $β$--$κ$…
