We derive exact results for close-packed dimers on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by inserting triangles into the triangles of the kagome lattice. Because the TKL is a non-bipartite lattice, dimer-dimer correlations are short-ranged, so that the ground state at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of the corresponding quantum dimer model on the same lattice is a short-ranged spin liquid. Using the Pfaffian method, we derive an exact form for the free energy, and we find that the entropy is 1/3 ln2 per site, regardless of the weights of the bonds. The occupation probability of every bond is 1/4 in the case of equal weights on every bond. Similar to the case of lattices formed by corner-sharing triangles (such as the kagome and squagome lattices), we find that the dimer-dimer correlation function is identically zero beyond a certain (short) distance. We find in addition that monomers are deconfined on the TKL, indicating that there is a short-ranged spin liquid phase at the RK point. We also find exact results for the ground state energy of the classical Heisenberg model. The ground state can be ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, locally coplanar, or locally canted, depending on the couplings. From the dimer model and the classical spin model, we derive upper bounds on the ground state energy of the quantum Heisenberg model on the TKL.
The $S=1/2$ kagome- and triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are investigated using the numerical exact diagonalization and the finite-size scaling analysis. The behaviour of the field derivative at zero magnetization is examined for both systems. The present result indicates that the spin excitation is gapless for each system.
We consider dimers on the star lattice (aka the 3-12, Fisher, expanded kagome or triangle-honeycomb lattice). We show that dimer coverings on this lattice have Z_2 arrow and pseudo-spin representations analogous to those for the kagome lattice, and use these to construct an exactly solvable quantum dimer model (QDM) with a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) ground state. This QDM, first discussed by Moessner and Sondhi from a different point of view, is the star-lattice analogue of a kagome-lattice QDM analyzed by Misguich et al. We give a detailed analysis of various properties of the classical equal-weig…
We investigate the effect of geometrical frustration on the $H$--$T$ phase diagrams of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on triangular and kagome lattices. The phase diagrams for the two models are obtained from large scale Monte Carlo simulations. For the kagome antiferromagnet thermal fluctuations are unable to lift completely degeneracy and stabilize translationally disordered multipolar phases. We find a substantial difference in the temperature scales of the order by disorder effect related to different degeneracy of the low- and the high-field classical ground states in the kagom…
We investigate the $S=1/2$ quantum spin antiferromagnets on the triangular and Kagome lattices in magnetic field, using the numerical exact diagonalization. Particularly we focus on an anomalous magnetization behavior of each system at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. The critical exponent analyses suggest that it is a conventional magnetization plateau on the triangular lattice, while an unconventional phenomenon, called the magnetization ramp, on the Kagome lattice.
The spin half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice, is mapped by Contractor Renormalization to a Spin-Pseudospin Hamiltonian on the triangular superlattice. Variationally, we find a ground state with columnar dimer order. Dimer orientation fluctuations are described by an effective O(2) model at energies above an exponentially suppressed clock mass scale. Our results explain the large density of low energy singlets observed numerically, and the non magnetic T-squared specific heat observed experimentally.
We discuss recently introduced numerical linked-cluster (NLC) algorithms that allow one to obtain temperature-dependent properties of quantum lattice models, in the thermodynamic limit, from exact diagonalization of finite clusters. We present studies of thermodynamic observables for spin models on square, triangular, and kagome lattices. Results for several choices of clusters and extrapolations methods, that accelerate the convergence of NLC, are presented. We also include a comparison of NLC results with those obtained from exact analytical expressions (where available), high-temperature ex…
Frustrated quantum spin systems such as the Heisenberg and Kitaev models on various lattices, have been known to exhibit various exotic properties not only at zero temperature but also for finite temperatures. Inspired by the remarkable development of the quantum frustrated spin systems in recent years, we investigate the finite-temperature properties of the $S=1/2$ Kitaev-Heisenberg models on kagome and triangular lattices by means of finite-temperature Lanczos methods with improved accuracy. In both lattices, multiple peaks are confirmed in the specific heat. To find the origin of the multip…
When the constituent spins have an energetic preference to lie along an easy-axis, triangular and Kagome lattice antiferromagnets often develop long-range order that distinguishes the three sublattices of the underlying triangular Bravais lattice. In zero magnetic field, this three-sublattice order melts {\em either} in a two-step manner, {\em i.e.} via an intermediate phase with power-law three-sublattice order controlled by a temperature dependent exponent $η(T) \in (\frac{1}{9},\frac{1}{4})$, {\em or} via a transition in the three-state Potts universality class. Here, I predict that the uni…
We consider a classical interacting dimer model which interpolates between the square lattice case and the triangular lattice case by tuning a chemical potential in the diagonal bonds. The interaction energy simply corresponds to the number of plaquettes with parallel dimers. Using transfer matrix calculations, we find in the anisotropic triangular case a succession of different physical phases as the interaction strength is increased: a short range disordered liquid dimer phase at low interactions, then a critical phase similar to the one found for the square lattice, and finally a transition…
We explicitly show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice is a liquid with topological order. Using the Pfaffian technique, we prove that the difference in local properties between the two topologically degenerate ground states on the cylinders and on the tori decreases exponentially with the system size. We compute the relevant correlation length and show that it equals the correlation length of the vison operator.
In a recent paper [ F. Wang and F. Y. Wu, Phys. Rev. E 75 (2007) 040105(R) ] we reported exact results on the enumeration of close-packed dimers on an infinite kagome lattice. We computed the per-dimer free energy using both the Pfaffian approach and a vertex-model formulation, and found the result given by a simple expression. We also reported results on dimer-dimer correlations without giving details. In this paper we present details of the correlation function analysis. In addition, we extend the exact enumeration to finite lattices under two different boundary conditions and with asymmetri…
It is well-known that exact enumerations of close-packed dimers can be carried out for two-dimensional lattices. While details of results are now known for most lattices, due to the unique nature of the lattice structure, there has been no complete analysis for the kagome lattice. Here we derive the close-form expression $(1/3) \ln (4 x y z)$ for the free energy of close-packed dimers on the kagome lattice, where $x,y,z$ are dimer weights. We use two different approaches, the Kasteleyn method of evaluating a Pfaffian and an alternative vertex model formulation. Both methods lead to the same fi…
The technique of damage spreading is used to study the phase diagram of the easy axis anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two geometrically frustrated lattices. The triangular and kagome systems are built up from triangular units that either share edges or corners respectively. The triangular lattice undergoes two sequential Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions while the kagome lattice undergoes a glassy transition. In both cases, the phase boundaries obtained using damage spreading are in good agreement with those obtained from equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations.
The recently fabricated two-dimensional magnetic materials Cu9X2(cpa)6.xH2O (cpa=2-carboxypentonic acid; X=F,Cl,Br) have copper sites which form a triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by introducing small triangles (``a-trimers'') inside of each kagome triangle (``b-trimer''). We show that in the limit where spins residing on b-trimers have Ising character, quantum fluctuations of XXZ spins residing on the a-trimers can be exactly accounted for in the absence of applied field. This is accomplished through a mapping to the kagome Ising model, for which exact analytic solutions exist. We deri…
We study the classical hard-core dimer model on the triangular lattice. Following Kasteleyn's fundamental theorem on planar graphs, this problem is soluble by Pfaffians. This model is particularly interesting for, unlike the dimer problems on the bipartite square and hexagonal lattices, its correlations are short ranged with a correlation length of less than one lattice constant. We compute the dimer-dimer and monomer-monomer correlators, and find that the model is deconfining: the monomer-monomer correlator falls off exponentially to a constant value sin(pi/12)/sqrt(3) = .1494..., only slight…
We consider the $(2+1)$-d $SU(2)$ quantum link model on the honeycomb lattice and show that it is equivalent to a quantum dimer model on the Kagomé lattice. The model has crystalline confined phases with spontaneously broken translation invariance associated with pinwheel order, which is investigated with either a Metropolis or an efficient cluster algorithm. External half-integer non-Abelian charges (which transform non-trivially under the $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ center of the $SU(2)$ gauge group) are confined to each other by fractionalized strings with a delocalized $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ flux. The strand…
On Archimedean lattices, the Ising model exhibits spontaneous ordering. Three examples of these lattices of the majority-vote model with noise are considered and studied through extensive Monte Carlo simulations. The order/disorder phase transition is observed in this system. The calculated values of the critical noise parameter are q_c=0.089(5), q_c=0.078(3), and q_c=0.114(2) for honeycomb, Kagome and triangular lattices, respectively. The critical exponents beta/nu, gamma/nu and 1/nu for this model are 0.15(5), 1.64(5), and 0.87(5); 0.14(3), 1.64(3), and 0.86(6); 0.12(4), 1.59(5), and 1.08(6…
We consider the triangular kagome XXZ-Ising model (TKL XXZ-Ising model) formed by inserting small triangles ("a-trimers") with XXZ spin-1 inside the triangles of the kagome lattice ("b-trimers"). It is a novel mixed spin system and can be solved exactly by transforming into the kagome lattice with the general transformation method for decorated spin systems. In the absence of an external field, we integrate out the quantum spins of the a-trimers and map the TKL model to the kagome Ising model exactly. We obtain the full phase diagram and their zero-temperature entropies (e.g. $s_{max}=5.48895$…
We present an extensive quantum Monte Carlo study of a nearest-neighbor, singlet-projection model on the kagome lattice that exhibits SO($N$) symmetry and is sign-problem-free. We find that in contrast to the previously studied SU($N$) variations of this model, the non-bipartite lattices appear to harbor spin-liquid phases for intermediate values of $N$, a result also seen on the triangular lattice with this same model. Unlike the triangular lattice, however, the kagome lattice appears to admit no valence bond solid (VBS) phase for large $N$, instead remaining a spin-liquid. We also observe th…
Motivated by experiments on non-magnetic triangular-lattice Mott insulators, we study one candidate paramagnetic phase, the columnar dimer (or valence-bond) phase. We apply variants of the bond-operator theory to a dimerized and spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and determine its zero-temperature phase diagram and the spectrum of elementary triplet excitations (triplons). Depending on model parameters, we find that the minimum of the triplon energy is located at either a commensurate or an incommensurate wavevector. Condensation of triplons at this commensurate-incommensurate tra…
We study the mechanism of loop condensation in the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice. The triangular lattice quantum dimer model displays a topologically ordered quantum liquid phase in addition to conventionally ordered phases with broken symmetry. In the context of systems with extended loop-like degrees of freedom, the formation of such topological order can be described in terms of loop condensation. Using Monte Carlo calculations with local and directed-loop updates, we compute geometric properties of the transition graph loop distributions of several triangular lattice quantu…
We study a spin-1/2 model with triangular XXZ-clusters on the orthogonal-dimer chain in the presence of an external magnetic field. First, we discuss the case where the triangular clusters are coupled via intermediate "classical" Ising spins. Diagonalization of the triangular XXZ-clusters yields the exact ground states; finite-temperature properties are computed exactly by an additional transfer-matrix step. A detailed analysis reveals a large variety of ground states at magnetization M equal to fractions 0, 1/4, and 1/2 of the saturation magnetization M=1. Some of these ground states break tr…
Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken…
We consider the Potts model and the related bond, site, and mixed site-bond percolation problems on triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and derive closed-form expressions for the critical frontier. For triangular-type lattices the critical frontier is known, usually derived from a duality consideration in conjunction with the assumption of a unique transition. Our analysis, however, is rigorous and based on an established result without the need of a uniqueness assumption, thus firmly establishing all derived results. For kagome-type lattices the exact critical frontier is not known. We …
We study vacancy diffusion on the classical triangular lattice dimer model, sub ject to the kinetic constraint that dimers can only translate, but not rotate. A single vacancy, i.e. a monomer, in an otherwise fully packed lattice, is always localized in a tree-like structure. The distribution of tree sizes is asymptotically exponential and has an average of 8.16 \pm 0.01 sites. A connected pair of monomers has a finite probability of being delocalized. When delocalized, the diffusion of monomers is anomalous:
Low-energy degrees of freedom of a spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet in the vicinity of the saturation field are mapped to a hard-hexagon model on a triangular lattice. The latter model is exactly solvable. The presented mapping allows to obtain quantitative description of the magnetothermodynamics of a quantum kagome antiferromagnet up to exponentially small corrections as well as predict the critical behavior for the transition into a magnon crystal state. Analogous mapping is presented for the sawtooth chain, which is mapped onto a model of classical hard dimers on a chain.
A characterization of topological order in terms of bi-partite entanglement was proposed recently [A. Kitaev and J. Preskill, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 110404 (2006); M. Levin and X.-G. Wen, ibid, 110405]. It was argued that in a topological phase there is a universal additive constant in the entanglement entropy, called the topological entanglement entropy, which reflects the underlying gauge theory for the topological order. In the present paper, we evaluate numerically the topological entanglement entropy in the ground-states of a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is known to …
In a recent paper (arXiv:0911.2514), one of us (FYW) considered the Potts model and bond and site percolation on two general classes of two-dimensional lattices, the triangular-type and kagome-type lattices, and obtained closed-form expressions for the critical frontier with applications to various lattice models. For the triangular-type lattices Wu's result is exact, and for the kagome-type lattices Wu's expression is under a homogeneity assumption. The purpose of the present paper is two-fold: First, an essential step in Wu's analysis is the derivation of lattice-dependent constants $A, B, C…
In recent work the author presented a formal expansion for lambda_d associated to the dimer problem on a d-dimensional rectangular lattice. Expressed in terms of d it yielded a presumed asymptotic expansion for lambda_d in inverse powers of d. We also considered an expansion in powers of x, a formal variable ultimately set equal to 1. We believe this series has better asymptotic properties than the expansion in inverse powers of d. We discuss this, and apply the same method to the two-dimensional triangular and hexagonal lattices. Viewed as a test of the x-expansion the results on those two la…
In a recent paper S. Friedland and the author presented a formal expression for lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem on a d-dimensional rectangular lattice, which involved a power series in p. Herein, we find simlar expressions for lambda_tri(p) and lambda_hex(p), the entropy per site for triangular and hexagonal lattices.
We study the thermodynamics of Ising spins on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL) using exact analytic methods as well as Monte Carlo simulations. We present the free energy, internal energy, specific heat, entropy, sublattice magnetizations, and susceptibility. We describe the rich phase diagram of the model as a function of coupling constants, temperature, and applied magnetic field. For frustrated interactions in the absence of applied field, the ground state is a spin liquid phase with integer residual entropy per spin $s_0/k_B={1/9} \ln 72\approx 0.4752...$. In weak applied field, the sys…
We report on simulations of reversible random sequential adsorption of dimers on three different lattices: a one-dimensional lattice, a two-dimensional triangular lattice, and a two-dimensional triangular lattice with the nearest neighbors excluded. In addition to the adsorption of particles at a rate K+, we allow particles to leave the surface at a rate K-. The results from the one-dimensional lattice model agree with previous results for the continuous parking lot model. In particular, the long-time behavior is dominated by collective events involving two particles. We were able to directly …
We analyze the partition function of the dimer model on an $\mathcal{M} \times \mathcal{N}$ triangular lattice wrapped on torus obtained by Fendley, Moessner and Sondhi [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{66}, 214513 (2002)]. From a finite-size analysis we have found that the dimer model on such a lattice can be described by conformal field theory having central charge $c=1$. The shift exponent for the specific heat is found to depend on the parity of the number of lattice sites $\mathcal{N}$ along a given lattice axis: e.g., for odd $\mathcal{N}$ we obtain the shift exponent $λ=1$, while for even $\mathcal…
We study a model of hard-core bosons with frustrated nearest-neighbor hopping ($t$) and repulsion ($V$) on the triangular lattice. We argue for a supersolid ground state in the large repulsion ($V\gg|t|$) limit where a dimer representation applies, by constructing a unitary mapping to the well understood unfrustrated hopping case. This generalized 'Marshall sign rule' allows us to establish the precise nature of the supersolid order by utilizing a recently proposed dimer variational wavefunction, whose correlations can be efficiently calculated using the Grassman approach. By continuity, a sup…
We analyze classical dimer models on the square and triangular lattice using a tensor network representation of the dimers. The correlation functions are numerically calculated using the recently developed "Tensor renormalization group" (TRG) technique. The partition function for the dimer problem can be calculated exactly by the Pfaffian method which is used here as a platform for comparing the numerical results. TRG turns out to be a powerful tool for describing gapped systems with exponentially decaying correlations very efficiently due to its fast convergence. This is the case for the dime…
We study the field--temperature phase diagram of the two-dimensional dipolar Ising ferromagnet on a kagome lattice with a specific ratio between the exchange and dipolar constants, $δ= 1$. Using the stochastic cutoff (SCO) $O(N)$ Monte Carlo method, we calculated order parameters for stripe and bubble phases and other thermodynamical quantities. We find two kinds of stripe phases at low fields, where the arrangement of the branch spins neighboring the stripe frame varies, and two bubble phases at high fields, in which three-spin domains (bubbles) form a regular triangular lattice but the trian…
We consider a triangular gap of side two in a $60^\circ$ angle on the triangular lattice whose sides are zig-zag lines. We study the interaction of the gap with the corner as the rest of the angle is completely filled with lozenges. We show that the resulting correlation is governed by the product of the distances between the gap and its five images in the sides of the angle. This provides a new aspect of the parallel between the correlation of gaps in dimer packings and electrostatics developed by the first author in previous work.

Covering a graph or a lattice with non-overlapping dimers is a problem that has received considerable interest in areas such as discrete mathematics, statistical physics, chemistry and materials science. Yet, the problem of percolation on dimer-covered lattices has received little attention. In particular, percolation on lattices that are fully covered by non-overlapping dimers has not evidently been considered. Here, we propose a novel procedure for generating random dimer coverings of a given lattice. We then compute the bond percolation threshold on random and ordered coverings of the squar…
We derive a continuum theory for the phase transition in a classical dimer model on the cubic lattice, observed in recent Monte Carlo simulations. Our derivation relies on the mapping from a three-dimensional classical problem to a two-dimensional quantum problem, by which the dimer model is related to a model of hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice. The dimer-ordering transition becomes a superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition at fractional filling, described by an SU(2)-invariant continuum theory.
We construct a class of lattices in three and higher dimensions for which the number of dimer coverings can be determined exactly using elementary arguments. These lattices are a generalization of the two-dimensional kagome lattice, and the method also works for graphs without translational symmetry. The partition function for dimer coverings on these lattices can be determined also for a class of assignments of different activities to different edges.
We study diluted antiferromagnetic Ising models on triangular and kagome lattices in a magnetic field, using the replica-exchange Monte Carlo method. We observe seven and five plateaus in the magnetization curve of the diluted antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular and kagome lattices, respectively, when a magnetic field is applied. These observations contrast with the two plateaus observed in the pure model. The origin of multiple plateaus is investigated by considering the spin configuration of triangles in the diluted models. We compare these results with those of a diluted antifer…
We use exact diagonalization to study the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) in the quantum dimer model on the square and triangular lattices. Due to the nonergodicity of the local plaquette-flip dynamics, the Hilbert space, which consists of highly constrained close-packed dimer configurations, splits into sectors characterized by topological invariants. We show that this has important consequences for ETH: We find that ETH is clearly satisfied only when each topological sector is treated separately, and only for moderate ratios of the potential and kinetic terms in the Hamiltonian. B…
We consider close-packed dimers, or perfect matchings, on two-dimensional regular lattices. We review known results and derive new expressions for the free energy, entropy, and the molecular freedom of dimers for a number of lattices including the simple-quartic (4^4), honeycomb (6^3), triangular (3^6), kagome (3.6.3.6), 3-12 (3.12^2) and its dual [3.12^2], and 4-8 (4.8^2) and its dual Union Jack [4.8^2] Archimedean tilings. The occurrence and nature of phase transitions are also analyzed and discussed.
In this work, we study quantum crystal melting in three space dimensions. Using an equivalent description in terms of dimers in a hexagonal lattice, we recast the crystal melting Hamiltonian as an occupancy problem in a Kagome lattice. The Hilbert space is spanned by states labeled by plane partitions and writing them as a product of interlaced integer partitions, we define a fermion-boson duality for plane partitions. Finally, based upon the latter result we conjecture that the growth operators for the quantum Hamiltonian can be represented in terms of the affine Yangian ${\cal Y}[\widehat{\m…
