We construct a class of lattices in three and higher dimensions for which the number of dimer coverings can be determined exactly using elementary arguments. These lattices are a generalization of the two-dimensional kagome lattice, and the method also works for graphs without translational symmetry. The partition function for dimer coverings on these lattices can be determined also for a class of assignments of different activities to different edges.
Covering a graph or a lattice with non-overlapping dimers is a problem that has received considerable interest in areas such as discrete mathematics, statistical physics, chemistry and materials science. Yet, the problem of percolation on dimer-covered lattices has received little attention. In particular, percolation on lattices that are fully covered by non-overlapping dimers has not evidently been considered. Here, we propose a novel procedure for generating random dimer coverings of a given lattice. We then compute the bond percolation threshold on random and ordered coverings of the squar…
Intractable enumeration problems are like Russian nesting dolls: structural properties of monomer-dimer coverings on two-dimensional quadratic lattices
We present the number of dimers $N_d(n)$ on the Sierpinski gasket $SG_d(n)$ at stage $n$ with dimension $d$ equal to two, three, four or five, where one of the outmost vertices is not covered when the number of vertices $v(n)$ is an odd number. The entropy of absorption of diatomic molecules per site, defined as $S_{SG_d}=\lim_{n \to \infty} \ln N_d(n)/v(n)$, is calculated to be $\ln(2)/3$ exactly for $SG_2(n)$. The numbers of dimers on the generalized Sierpinski gasket $SG_{d,b}(n)$ with $d=2$ and $b=3,4,5$ are also obtained exactly. Their entropies are equal to $\ln(6)/7$, $\ln(28)/12$, $\ln…
We present a innovative relationship between ground states of the Ising model and dimer coverings which sheds new light on the Ising Models with highly degenerated ground states and enables one to construct such models. Thanks to this relationship we also find the generating function for dimers as the appropriate limit of the free energy per spin for the Ising model.
Dimer coverings (or perfect matchings) of a finite graph are classical objects of graph theory appearing in the study of exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. We introduce more general dimer labelings which form a topological space called the dimer space of the graph. This space turns out to be a cubed complex whose vertices are the dimer coverings. We show that the dimer space is nonpositively curved in the sense of Gromov, so that its universal covering is a CAT(0)-space. We study the fundamental group of the dimer space and, in particular, obtain a presentation of this group by …
We discuss the exact solutions of various models of the statistics of dimer coverings of a Bethe lattice. We reproduce the well-known exact results for noninteracting hard-core dimers by both a very simple geometrical argument and a general algebraic formulation for lattice statistical problems. For the Bethe lattice we also obtain the exact solution when either a) the dimers interact via a short-range interaction or b) the underlying lattice is anisotropic. We also give solutions for special cases of random lattices and for the jamming limit of one dimensional deposition of dimers.
We study the model of close-packed dimers on planar lattices belonging to the family of modified rectangular (MR) fractals, whose members are enumerated by an integer $p\geq 2$, as well as on the non-planar 4-simplex fractal lattice. By applying an exact recurrence enumeration method, we determine the asymptotic forms for numbers of dimer coverings, and numerically calculate entropies per dimer in the thermodynamic limit, for a sequence of MR lattices with $2\leq p\leq8$ and for 4-simplex fractal. We find that the entropy per dimer on MR fractals is increasing function of the scaling parameter…
The Adam-Gibbs view of the glass transition relates the relaxation time to the configurational entropy, which goes continuously to zero at the so-called Kauzmann temperature. We examine this scenario in the context of a dimer model with an entropy vanishing phase transition, and stochastic loop dynamics. We propose a coarse-grained master equation for the order parameter dynamics which is used to compute the time-dependent autocorrelation function and the associated relaxation time. Using a combination of exact results, scaling arguments and numerical diagonalizations of the master equation, w…
We consider dimers on the star lattice (aka the 3-12, Fisher, expanded kagome or triangle-honeycomb lattice). We show that dimer coverings on this lattice have Z_2 arrow and pseudo-spin representations analogous to those for the kagome lattice, and use these to construct an exactly solvable quantum dimer model (QDM) with a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) ground state. This QDM, first discussed by Moessner and Sondhi from a different point of view, is the star-lattice analogue of a kagome-lattice QDM analyzed by Misguich et al. We give a detailed analysis of various properties of the classical equal-weig…
In random sequential covering, identical objects are deposited randomly, irreversibly, and sequentially; only attempts increasing the coverage are accepted. A finite system eventually gets congested, and we study the statistics of congested configurations. For the covering of an interval by dimers, we determine the average number of deposited dimers, compute all higher cumulants, and establish the probabilities of reaching minimally and maximally congested configurations. We also investigate random covering by segments with $\ell$ sites and sticks. Covering an infinite substrate continues inde…
In this paper, we investigate if it occurs a phase transition for a system of classical dimers adsorbed on a 3-4 lattice in the thermodynamic limit. We define four types of bonds (denoted by the dimers activities adsorbed in her, $x$, $y$, $u$ and $v$) and evaluated the partition function from the combinatorial method of the pfaffian and using periodic boundary conditions. We write the density of free energy per particle and the condition to his analyticity, showing that there is a critical point for a determined choice of the activities. We also numerically evaluated the integral on free ener…
We study and solve the ground-state problem of a microscopic model for a family of orbitally degenerate quantum magnets. The orbital degrees of freedom are assumed to have directional character and are represented by static Potts-like variables. In the limit of vanishing Hund's coupling, the ground-state manifold of such a model is spanned by the hard-core dimer (spin singlet) coverings of the lattice. The extensive degeneracy of dimer coverings is lifted at a finite Hund's coupling through an order-out-of-disorder mechanism by virtual triplet excitations. The relevance of our results to sever…
We discuss the need for discretization to evaluate the configurational entropy in a general model. We also discuss the prescription using restricted partition function formalism to study the stationary limit of metastable states. We introduce a lattice model of dimers as a paradigm of molecular fluid and study metastability in it to investigate the root cause of glassy behavior. We demonstrate the existence of the entropy crisis in metastable states, from which it follows that the entropy crisis is the root cause underlying the ideal glass transition in systems with particles of all sizes. The…
Recently an expansion as a power series in 1/d has been presented for the specific entropy of a complete dimer covering of a d-dimensional hypercubic lattice. This paper extends from 3 to 10 the number of terms known in the series. Likewise an expansion for the entropy, dependent on the dimer-density p, of a monomer-dimer system, involving a sum sum_k a_k(d) p^k, has been recently offered. We herein extend the number of the known expansion coefficients from 6 to 20 for the hyper-cubic lattices of general dimension d and from 6 to 24 for the hyper-cubic lattices of dimensions d < 5 . We show th…
We study here different regions in phase diagrams of the spin-1/2, spin-1 and spin-3/2 one dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg systems with frustration (next-nearest-neighbor interaction $J_2$) and dimerization ($δ$). In particular, we analyze the behaviors of the bipartite entanglement entropy and fidelity at the gapless to gapped phase transitions and across the lines separating different phases in the $J_2-δ$ plane. All the calculations in this work are based on numerical exact diagonalizations of finite systems.
A characterization of topological order in terms of bi-partite entanglement was proposed recently [A. Kitaev and J. Preskill, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 110404 (2006); M. Levin and X.-G. Wen, ibid, 110405]. It was argued that in a topological phase there is a universal additive constant in the entanglement entropy, called the topological entanglement entropy, which reflects the underlying gauge theory for the topological order. In the present paper, we evaluate numerically the topological entanglement entropy in the ground-states of a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is known to …

We introduce the quantum dimer-pentamer model (QDPM) on the square lattice. This model is a generalization of the square lattice quantum dimer model as its configuration space comprises fully-packed hard-core dimer coverings as well as dimer configurations containing pentamers, where four dimers touch a vertex. Thus in the QDPM, the fully-packed, hard-core constraint of the quantum dimer model is relaxed such that the local dimer number at each vertex is fixed modulo 3, resulting in an exact local $Z_3$ gauge symmetry. We construct a local Hamiltonian for which the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) equal …
The entropy of a monomer-dimer system on an infinite bipartite lattice can be written as a mean-field part plus a series expansion in the dimer density. In a previous paper it has been conjectured that all coefficients of this series are positive. Analogously on a connected regular graph with $v$ vertices, the "entropy" of the graph ${\rm ln} N(i)/v$, where $N(i)$ is the number of ways of setting down $i$ dimers on the graph, can be written as a part depending only on the number of the dimer configurations over the completed graph plus a Newton series in the dimer density on the graph. In this…
The dimer problem arose in a thermodynamic study of diatomic molecules, and was abstracted into one of the most basic and natural problems in both statistical mechanics and combinatoric mathematics. Given a rectangular lattice of volume V in d dimensions, the dimer problem loosely speaking is to count the number of different ways dimers (dominoes) may be laid down in the lattice (without overlapping) to completely cover it. Each dimer covers two neighboring vertices. It is known that the number of such coverings is roughly exp(lambda_d V) for some constant lambda_d as V goes to infinity. Herei…
We discuss the ground state of the spin-orbital model for spin-one ions with partially filled $t_{2g}$ levels on a honeycomb lattice. We find that the orbital degrees of freedom induce a spontaneous dimerization of spins and drive them into nonmagnetic manifold spanned by hard-core dimer (spin-singlet) coverings of the lattice. The cooperative ``dimer Jahn-Teller'' effect is introduced through a magnetoelastic coupling and is shown to lift the orientational degeneracy of dimers leading to a peculiar valence bond crystal pattern. The present theory provides a theoretical explanation of nonmagne…
We study the $n=2$ R\' enyi entanglement entropy of the triangular quantum dimer model via Monte Carlo sampling of Rokhsar-Kivelson(RK)-like ground state wavefunctions. Using the construction proposed by Kitaev and Preskill [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 110404 (2006)] and an adaptation of the Monte Carlo algorithm described by Hastings \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 157201 (2010)], we compute the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) at the RK point $γ= (1.001 \pm 0.003) \ln 2$ confirming earlier results. Additionally, we compute the TEE of the ground state of a generalized RK-like Hamiltonian …
Two dimensional film system bears many exotic thermodynamics behaviors. We proposed a mathematical physics model to explore how the melting temperature of a two dimensional mathematical dimer film depends on the odd-eveness of the finite width of dimer film. A weak external bond between dimers is introduced into the classical dimer model in this dimer film. We derived a general equation of melting temperature and applied it for computing the melting temperature of a dimer film covering a finite square lattice. The melting temperature is proportional to the external bonding energy that we assum…
A model of dipolar dimer liquid (DDL) on a two-dimensional lattice has been proposed. We found that at high density and low temperature, it has a partially ordered phase which we called glacia phase. The glacia phase transition can be understood by mapping the DDL to an annealed Ising model on random graphs. In the high density limit the critical temperature obtained by the Monte Carlo simulation is $k_BT_c^G = (3.5\pm0.1)J$, which agrees with the estimations of the upper and lower bounds of $k_BT_c^G$ with exactly solved Ising models. In the high density and low temperature limit, we further …
Let (lambda_d)(p) be the p monomer-dimer entropy on the d-dimensional integer lattice Z^d, where p in [0,1] is the dimer density. We give upper and lower bounds for (lambda_d)(p) in terms of expressions involving (lambda_(d-1))(q). The upper bound is based on a conjecture claiming that the p monomer-dimer entropy of an infinite subset of Z^d is bounded above by (lambda_d)(p). We compute the first three terms in the formal asymptotic expansion of (lambda_d)(p) in powers of 1/d. We prove that the lower asymptotic matching conjecture is satisfied for (lambda_d)(p).
Random tensor models which display multicritical behaviors in a remarkably simple fashion are presented. They come with entropy exponents γ= (m-1)/m, similarly to multicritical random branched polymers. Moreover, they are interpreted as models of hard dimers on a set of random lattices for the sphere in dimension three and higher. Dimers with their exclusion rules are generated by the different interactions between tensors, whose coupling constants are dimer activities. As an illustration, we describe one multicritical point, which is interpreted as a transition between the dilute phase and a …
In a recent paper S. Friedland and the author presented a formal expression for lambda_d(p) of the monomer-dimer problem on a d-dimensional rectangular lattice, which involved a power series in p. Herein, we find simlar expressions for lambda_tri(p) and lambda_hex(p), the entropy per site for triangular and hexagonal lattices.
The dimer problem arose in a thermodynamic study of diatomic molecules, and was abstracted into one of the most basic and natural problems in both statistical mechanics and combinatoric mathematics. Given a rectangular lattice of volume V in d dimensions, the dimer problem loosely speaking is to count the number of different ways dimers (dominoes) may be layed down on the lattice to completely cover it. It is known that the number of such coverings is roughly exp(lambda_d V) for some number lambda_d. The first terms in the expansion of lambda_d have been known for about thirty years lambda_d ~…
The quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer interactions in a magnetic field is considered by a rigorous approach. The model conserves the z-component of total spin on vertical Heisenberg bonds and this property is used to calculate exactly the partition function using the transfer-matrix method. We have found the ground-state phase diagram of the given model in a magnetic field as well as the macroscopic degeneracy along field-induced transitions accompanied with the magnetization jumps. The model exhibits two intermediate fractional plate…
We consider close-packed dimers, or perfect matchings, on two-dimensional regular lattices. We review known results and derive new expressions for the free energy, entropy, and the molecular freedom of dimers for a number of lattices including the simple-quartic (4^4), honeycomb (6^3), triangular (3^6), kagome (3.6.3.6), 3-12 (3.12^2) and its dual [3.12^2], and 4-8 (4.8^2) and its dual Union Jack [4.8^2] Archimedean tilings. The occurrence and nature of phase transitions are also analyzed and discussed.
We present a detailed study of a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with an interaction between nearest-neighbor dimers. The interaction favors parallel alignment of dimers, resulting in a low-temperature crystalline phase. With large-scale Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that the crystal melts through a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to give rise to a high-temperature critical phase, with algebraic decays of correlations functions with exponents that vary continuously with the temperature. We give a theoretical interpretation of these results by map…
A sampling algorithm is presented that generates spin glass configurations of the 2D Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass at finite temperature, with probabilities proportional to their Boltzmann weights. Such an algorithm overcomes the slow dynamics of direct simulation and can be used to study long-range correlation functions and coarse-grained dynamics. The algorithm uses a correspondence between spin configurations on a regular lattice and dimer (edge) coverings of a related graph: Wilson's algorithm [D. B. Wilson, Proc. 8th Symp. Discrete Algorithms 258, (1997)] for sampling dimer coverings …
For a class of highly frustrated antiferromagnetic quantum spin lattices the ground state exhibits a huge degeneracy in high magnetic fields due to the existence of localized magnon states. For some of these spin lattices (in particular, the 1D dimer-plaquette, sawtooth and kagomé-like chains as well as the 2D kagomé lattice) we calculate rigorously the ground-state entropy at the saturation field. We find that the ground-state entropy per site remains finite at saturation. This residual ground-state entropy produces a maximum in the field dependence of the isothermal entropy at low temperatur…
We analyse a non-equilibrium exclusion process in which particles are created and annihilated in pairs and hop to the the right or to the left with different transition rates, $p$ and $q$, respectively. We have studied the dynamics of a single particle, and exactly determined the entropy, entropy production rate and entropy flux as functions of time. In the system of many particles, we have characterised the system by its probability distribution, as well as the entropy production rate in close forms, provided that $p+q$ equals the sum of dimers creation and annihilation rates. The general cas…
We derive exact results for close-packed dimers on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by inserting triangles into the triangles of the kagome lattice. Because the TKL is a non-bipartite lattice, dimer-dimer correlations are short-ranged, so that the ground state at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of the corresponding quantum dimer model on the same lattice is a short-ranged spin liquid. Using the Pfaffian method, we derive an exact form for the free energy, and we find that the entropy is 1/3 ln2 per site, regardless of the weights of the bonds. The occupation probability of every bon…
We study the octahedron relation (also known as the $A_{\infty}$ $T$-system), obeyed in particular by the partition function for dimer coverings of the Aztec Diamond graph. For a suitable class of doubly periodic initial conditions, we find exact solutions with a particularly simple factorized form. For these, we show that the density function that measures the average dimer occupation of a face of the Aztec graph, obeys a system of linear recursion relations with periodic coefficients. This allows us to explore the thermodynamic limit of the corresponding dimer models and to derive exact "arc…
Regular structures of an intractable enumeration problem: a diagonal recurrence relation of monomer-polymer coverings on two-dimensional rectangular lattices
The classical 1961 solution to the problem of determining the number of perfect matchings (or dimer coverings) of a rectangular grid graph -- due independently to Kasteleyn and to Temperley and Fisher -- consists of changing the sign of some of the entries in the adjacency matrix so that the Pfaffian of the new matrix gives the number of perfect matchings, and then evaluating this Pfaffian. Another classical method is to use the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem on non-intersecting lattice paths to express the number of perfect matchings as a determinant, and then evaluate this determinant. In …
Diffusion of a particle in the N-dimensional external potential which is periodic in one dimension and unbounded in the other N-1 dimensions is investigated. We find an analytical expression for the overdamped diffusion and study numerically the cases of moderate and low damping. We show that in the underdamped limit, the multi-dimensional effects lead to reduction (comparing with the one-dimensional motion) of jump lengths between subsequent trapping of the atom in bottoms of the external periodic potential. As application we consider the diffusion of a dimer adsorbed on the crystal surface.
We have obtained all the density matrix elements on six lattice sites for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain via the algebraic method based on the quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations. Several interesting correlation functions, such as chiral correlation functions, dimer-dimer correlation functions, etc... have been analytically evaluated. Furthermore we have calculated all the eigenvalues of the density matrix and analyze the eigenvalue-distribution. As a result the exact von Neumann entropy for the reduced density matrix on six lattice sites has been obtained.
