We consider dimers on the star lattice (aka the 3-12, Fisher, expanded kagome or triangle-honeycomb lattice). We show that dimer coverings on this lattice have Z_2 arrow and pseudo-spin representations analogous to those for the kagome lattice, and use these to construct an exactly solvable quantum dimer model (QDM) with a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) ground state. This QDM, first discussed by Moessner and Sondhi from a different point of view, is the star-lattice analogue of a kagome-lattice QDM analyzed by Misguich et al. We give a detailed analysis of various properties of the classical equal-weight dimer model on the star lattice, most of which are related to those of the RK state. Using both the arrow representation and the fermionic path integral formulation of the Pfaffian method, we calculate the number of dimer coverings, dimer occupation probabilities, and dimer, vison, and monomer correlation functions. We show that a dimer is uncorrelated with dimers further away than on neighboring triangles, that the vison-vison correlation function vanishes, and that the monomer-monomer correlation function equals 1/4 regardless of the monomer positions (with one exception). A key result in the fermionic approach is the vanishing of the two-point Green function beyond a short distance. These properties are very similar to those of dimers on the kagome lattice. We also discuss some generalizations involving arrow representations for dimer coverings on "general Fisher lattices" and their "reduced" lattices, with the kagome, squagome, and triangular kagome lattice being examples of the latter.
In this paper, we study topological properties of 3D lattice dimer model. We demonstrate, that the dimer model on a bipartite lattice possesses topological defects, which are exactly characterized by Hopf invariant. We derive its explicit algebraic expression in terms of effective magnetic field of a dimer configuration. Thus, we solve the problem of topological classification of possible states in 3D lattice dimer model. Furthermore, since the lattice dimer model is known to be dual to spin ice, our work can be viewed as a proposal to search for hopfions in classical, as well as, artificial s…
We study Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice perturbed by further neighbor couplings. The second-order effective Hamiltonian is calculated and the resultant Hamiltonian is found to be a square-lattice quantum-dimer model with a finite hopping amplitude and no repulsion, which suggests the stabilization of the plaquette phase. Our recipe for constructing quantum-dimer models can be adopted for other lattices and provides a route for the experimental realization of quantum-dimer models.
We study the classical hard-core dimer model on the triangular lattice. Following Kasteleyn's fundamental theorem on planar graphs, this problem is soluble by Pfaffians. This model is particularly interesting for, unlike the dimer problems on the bipartite square and hexagonal lattices, its correlations are short ranged with a correlation length of less than one lattice constant. We compute the dimer-dimer and monomer-monomer correlators, and find that the model is deconfining: the monomer-monomer correlator falls off exponentially to a constant value sin(pi/12)/sqrt(3) = .1494..., only slight…
We derive exact results for close-packed dimers on the triangular kagome lattice (TKL), formed by inserting triangles into the triangles of the kagome lattice. Because the TKL is a non-bipartite lattice, dimer-dimer correlations are short-ranged, so that the ground state at the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point of the corresponding quantum dimer model on the same lattice is a short-ranged spin liquid. Using the Pfaffian method, we derive an exact form for the free energy, and we find that the entropy is 1/3 ln2 per site, regardless of the weights of the bonds. The occupation probability of every bon…
We study a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction between parallel dimers. This model corresponds to the classical limit of quantum dimer models [D.S. Rokhsar and S.A. Kivelson, Phys. Rev. Lett.{\bf 61}, 2376 (1988)]. By means of Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that this system undergoes a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition separating a low temperature ordered phase where dimers are aligned in columns from a high temperature critical phase with continuously varying exponents. This is understood by constructing the corresponding …
We consider a classical interacting dimer model which interpolates between the square lattice case and the triangular lattice case by tuning a chemical potential in the diagonal bonds. The interaction energy simply corresponds to the number of plaquettes with parallel dimers. Using transfer matrix calculations, we find in the anisotropic triangular case a succession of different physical phases as the interaction strength is increased: a short range disordered liquid dimer phase at low interactions, then a critical phase similar to the one found for the square lattice, and finally a transition…
We study phases and transitions of the square-lattice double dimer model, consisting of two coupled replicas of the classical dimer model. As on the cubic lattice, we find a thermal phase transition from the Coulomb phase, a disordered but correlated dimer liquid, to a phase where fluctuations of the two replicas are closely synchronized with one another. Surprisingly, and in contrast to the cubic case, the phase boundary includes the noninteracting point, as we establish using a symmetry-based analysis of an effective height theory, indicating that infinitesimal coupling is sufficient to sync…
We study the classical cubic-lattice double dimer model, consisting of two coupled replicas of the close-packed dimer model, using a combination of theoretical arguments and Monte Carlo simulations. Our results establish the presence of a 'synchronization transition' at a critical value of the coupling, where both replicas remain disordered but their fluctuations become strongly correlated. We show that this unconventional transition, which has neither external nor spontaneous symmetry breaking, is continuous and belongs to the 3D inverted-XY universality class. By adding aligning interactions…
We explicitly show that the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice is a liquid with topological order. Using the Pfaffian technique, we prove that the difference in local properties between the two topologically degenerate ground states on the cylinders and on the tori decreases exponentially with the system size. We compute the relevant correlation length and show that it equals the correlation length of the vison operator.
We study a generalized quantum hard-core dimer model on the square and honeycomb lattices, allowing for first and second neighbor dimers. At generalized RK points, the exact ground states can be constructed, and ground-state correlation functions can be equated to those of interacting 1+1 dimensional Grassmann fields. When the concentration of second neighbor dimers is small, the ground state correlations are shown to be short-ranged corresponding to a (gaped) spin liquid phase. On a 2-torus, the ground states exhibit fourfold topological degeneracy. On a finite cylinder we have found a dramat…
We investigate the spatially anisotropic square lattice quantum antiferromagnet. The model describes isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains (exchange constant J) coupled antiferromagnetically in the transverse (J_\perp) and diagonal (J_\times), with respect to the chain, directions. Classically, the model admits two ordered ground states -- with antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-chain spin correlations -- separated by a first order phase transition at J_\perp=2J_\times. We show that in the quantum model this transition splits into two, revealing an intermediate quantum-disordered columna…
We discuss the ground state of the spin-orbital model for spin-one ions with partially filled $t_{2g}$ levels on a honeycomb lattice. We find that the orbital degrees of freedom induce a spontaneous dimerization of spins and drive them into nonmagnetic manifold spanned by hard-core dimer (spin-singlet) coverings of the lattice. The cooperative ``dimer Jahn-Teller'' effect is introduced through a magnetoelastic coupling and is shown to lift the orientational degeneracy of dimers leading to a peculiar valence bond crystal pattern. The present theory provides a theoretical explanation of nonmagne…
We study a large-N deformation of the S=1/2 pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet which leads to a soluble quantum dimer model at leading non-trivial order. In this limit, the ground state manifold -- while extensively degenerate -- breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice, which implies a finite temperature Ising transition without translational symmetry breaking. At lower temperatures and further in the 1/N expansion, we discuss an effective Hamiltonian within the degenerate manifold, which has a transparent physical interpretation as representing dimer potential energies. We find mean-f…
We present a quantum Monte Carlo investigation of the finite-temperature phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the square lattice. We use the sweeping cluster algorithm, which allows to implement exactly the dimer constraint, supplemented with a equal-time directed loop move that allows to sample winding sectors. We find a high-temperature critical phase with power-law correlations that extend down to the Rokshar-Kivelson point, in the vicinity of which a re-entrance effect in the lines of constant exponent is found. For small values of the kinetic energy strength, we find finite-tempera…
We introduce quantum dimer models on lattices made of corner-sharing triangles. These lattices includes the kagome lattice and can be defined in arbitrary geometry. They realize fully disordered and gapped dimer-liquid phase with topological degeneracy and deconfined fractional excitations, as well as solid phases. Using geometrical properties of the lattice, several results are obtained exactly, including the full spectrum of a dimer-liquid. These models offer a very natural - and maybe the simplest possible - framework to illustrate general concepts such as fractionalization, topological ord…
Since constraints hinder the application of numerical algorithms, phase diagrams of quantum dimer models are still controversial, even on the square lattice. The core controversy is whether the mixed state exists. In this article, we give strong evidences to solve this dispute. With our newly developed sweeping cluster method, we studied the phase diagram of large parameter space by introducing the definition of pair correlation function and other supporting evidence to distinguish the mixed phase from the columnar phase with high precision. In particular, we find that the ground state corresp…
Machine learning methods are being actively considered as a new tool of describing many body physics. However, so far, their capabilities has been only demonstrated in previously studied models, such as e.g. Ising model. Here, we consider a simple problem, demonstrating that neural networks can be successfully used to give new insights in statistical physics. Specifically, we consider 3D lattice dimer model, which consists of sites forming a lattice and bonds connecting the neighboring sites, in such a way that every bond can be either empty or filled with a dimer, and the total number of dime…
We obtain a quantum dimer model (QDM) containing a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point expressed by spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. This lattice has macroscopically degenerated nonmagnetic ground states, which are equivalent to the Hilbert space of a square-lattice QDM. Then, a square-lattice QDM containing the RK point as a second-order effective Hamiltonian is obtained by introducing further neighbor couplings as perturbation. Our model can provide a new method for the experimental realization of a resonating valence bond state in the QDM.
We present analytic results for a special dimer model on the {\em non-bipartite} and {\em non-planar} checkerboard lattice that does not allow for parallel dimers surrounding diagonal links. We {\em exactly} calculate the number of closed packed dimer coverings on finite checkerboard lattices under periodic boundary conditions, and determine all dimer-dimer correlations. The latter are found to vanish beyond a certain distance. We find that this solvable model, despite being non-planar, is in close kinship with well-known paradigm-setting planar counterparts that allow exact mappings to $\math…
An effective model in the isolated dimer limit of the Kitaev-type model on a decorated honeycomb lattice is investigated at finite temperature. The ground state of this model is exactly shown to be a chiral spin liquid with spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry. We elaborate the finite-temperature phase diagram by using the mean-field approximation and Monte Carlo simulation. We find that the phase transition between the high-temperature paramagnetic phase and the low-temperature chiral spin liquid phase is always of second order in the Monte Carlo results, although a tricritical poin…
Motivated by experiments on non-magnetic triangular-lattice Mott insulators, we study one candidate paramagnetic phase, the columnar dimer (or valence-bond) phase. We apply variants of the bond-operator theory to a dimerized and spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and determine its zero-temperature phase diagram and the spectrum of elementary triplet excitations (triplons). Depending on model parameters, we find that the minimum of the triplon energy is located at either a commensurate or an incommensurate wavevector. Condensation of triplons at this commensurate-incommensurate tra…
We introduce a quantum dimer model on the kagome lattice with kinetic terms allowing from 3 to 6 dimers to resonate around hexagons. Unlike models studied previously, the different resonance loops appears with different signs (given by the parity of the number of dimers involved). These signs naturally appear when performing the lowest-order overlap expansion (Rokhsar and Kivelson 1988) of the Heisenberg model. We demonstrate that the quantum dimer model has an extensive zero-temperature entropy and has very short-range dimer-dimer correlations. We discuss the possible relevance of this new ki…
Low-temperature magnetic properties of both classical and quantum dimerized ferromagnetic spin chains are studied. It is shown that at low temperatures the classical dimerized model reduces to the classical uniform model with the effective exchange integral $J_{0}=J(1-δ^{2})$, where $δ$ is the dimerization parameter. The partition function and spin correlation function are calculated by means of mapping to the continuum limit, which is justified at low temperatures. In the continuum limit the calculation of the partition function and spin correlation function is reduced to the eigenvalue probl…
We present a detailed study of a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with an interaction between nearest-neighbor dimers. The interaction favors parallel alignment of dimers, resulting in a low-temperature crystalline phase. With large-scale Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that the crystal melts through a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to give rise to a high-temperature critical phase, with algebraic decays of correlations functions with exponents that vary continuously with the temperature. We give a theoretical interpretation of these results by map…
With the classical Monte Carlo method, I find the energy gap in the Rokhsar-Kivelson dimer model on the triangular lattice. I identify the lowest excitations as visons, and compute their energy as a function of the momentum.
We report the dependence of magnetic properties on the crystalline disorder in Li$_{2}$RuO$_3$ with Ru honeycomb lattice. This oxide exhibits unconventional Ru-dimer transition below $T_\text{d} \sim$ 540 K. We demonstrate that the cell parameters, related to the coherence of the dimer formation, are strongly dependent on the synthesis procedure. We show that the magnetic behavior at the dimer transition is closely related to the lattice parameters. In particular, we revealed that samples with well-ordered dimers exhibit a first-order magnetic transition with the onset exceeding 550~K, higher …
Quantum dimer models are known to host topological quantum spin liquid phases, and it has recently become possible to simulate such models with Rydberg atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers. Here, we present large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation results on an extension of the triangular lattice quantum dimer model with terms in the Hamiltonian annihilating and creating single dimers. We find distinct odd and even $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, along with several phases with no topological order: a staggered crystal, a nematic phase, and a trivial symmetric phase with no obvious broken…

We discuss the phase diagram of the quantum dimer model on the hexagonal (honeycomb) lattice. In addition to the columnar and staggered valence bond solids which have been discussed in previous work, we establish the existence of a plaquette valence bond solid. The transition between the plaquette and columnar phases at $v/t=-0.2 \pm 0.05$ is argued to be first order. We note that this model should describe valence bond dominated phases of frustrated Heisenberg models on the hexagonal lattice and discuss its relation to recent exact diagonalisation work by J.B. Fouet etal on the J_1-J_2 model …
Thermodynamic properties of the macroscopically degenerate tetramer-dimer phase of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice
We study a generalized honeycomb lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic 2-spin exchange, and competing 4-spin interactions which serve to stabilize a staggered dimer state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. Using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo numerics, spin wave theory, and bond operator theory, we show that this model undergoes a strong first-order transition between a Neel state and a staggered dimer state upon increasing the strength of the 4-spin interactions. We attribute the strong first order character of this transition to the spinless n…
Within the linear flavor-wave theory, we show that, caused by quantum order-by-disorder mechanism, the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model defined on a honeycomb lattice can spontaneously develop a columnar dimer order with a non-bipartite structure. The low-lying excitations above this novel ground state form several flat bands separated by nonzero energy gaps. Our results suggest that the quantum phase transition separating this dimerized phase with the nearby Néel-order one may be of first order.
We study the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is expected to describe the singlet dynamics of frustrated Heisenberg models in phases where valence bond configurations dominate their physics. We find, in contrast to the square lattice, that there is a truly short ranged resonating valence bond (RVB) phase with no gapless collective excitations and with deconfined, gapped, spinons for a {\it finite} range of parameters. We also establish the presence of three crystalline phases in this system.
Quantum dimer models typically arise in various low energy theories like those of frustrated antiferromagnets. We introduce a quantum dimer model on the kagome lattice which stabilizes an alternative $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order, namely the so-called "double semion" order. For a particular set of parameters, the model is exactly solvable, allowing us to access the ground state as well as the excited states. We show that the double semion phase is stable over a wide range of parameters using numerical exact diagonalization. Furthermore, we propose a simple microscopic spin Hamiltonian for w…
The honeycomb-lattice ruthenate Li$_2$RuO$_3$ is made heavily Li-deficient by chemical oxidation by iodine. The delithiation triggers a different phase Li$_{2-x}$RuO$_3$, the "D-phase", with superlattice. For the first time we disclose the magnetic and structural properties of the D-phase in the dimer-solid state. The low temperature magnetic susceptibility and the bond lengths indicate a bonding configuration consisting of both Ru$^{4+}$-Ru$^{4+}$ and Ru$^{5+}$-Ru$^{5+}$ dimers.
We report on an exhaustive investigation of the dynamical dimer-dimer correlations in imaginary time for the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice using the Green's function Monte Carlo method. We show in particular that soft modes develop upon reducing the dimer-dimer repulsion, indicating the presence of a second-order phase transition into an ordered phase with broken translational symmetry. We further investigate the nature of this ordered phase, for which a 12-site unit cell has been previously proposed, with the surprising result that significant Bragg peaks are only present at t…
Electrons may form inter-site pairs (dimers) by a number of mechanisms. For example, long-range (Fröhlich) electron-phonon interactions and strong on-site Hubbard U allow formation of small light bipolarons in some lattices. We identify circumstances under which triplet dimers are strictly localised by interference in certain one- and two-dimensional lattices. We assume a U-V Hamiltonian with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour hopping integrals t and t', large positive U and attractive nearest- and next-nearest-neighbour interactions V and V'. In the square ladder and some two-dimensional bil…
We consider the effects of doping the S = 1/2 kagome lattice with static impurities. We demonstrate that impurities lower the number of low-lying singlet states, induce dimer-dimer correlations of considerable spatial extent, and do not generate free spin degrees of freedom. Most importantly, they experience a highly unconventional mutual repulsion as a direct consequence of the strong spin frustration. These properties are illustrated by exact diagonalization, and reproduced to semi-quantitative accuracy within a dimer resonating-valence-bond description which affords access to longer length …
The quantum dimer model on the square lattice is equivalent to a $U(1)$ gauge theory. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations reveal that, for values of the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) coupling $λ< 1$, the theory exists in a confining columnar phase. The interfaces separating distinct columnar phases display plaquette order, which, however, is not realized as a bulk phase. Static "electric" charges are confined by flux tubes that consist of multiple strands, each carrying a fractionalized flux $\frac{1}{4}$. A soft pseudo-Goldstone mode emerges around $λ\approx 0$, long before one reaches the RK point at $…
The plaquette phase of the square lattice quantum dimer model is studied using a continuous-time reptation quantum Monte Carlo method for lattices of sizes up to 48x48 sites. We determine the location of the phase transition between the columnar and plaquette phases to occur at V_c/J=0.60 +- 0.05 which is significantly larger than inferred from previous exact diagonalization studies on smaller lattices. Offdiagonal correlation functions are obtained. They exhibit long-range order in the plaquette phase but not at the Rokhsar-Kivelson point. We also observe significant finite-size corrections t…
We study the Kondo lattice model on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice focusing on the quantum phase transition between the valence bond solid and the heavy fermion liquid phase. By explicitly including spinon pairing of local moments at the mean-field level, we establish the emergence of a unique heavy fermion superconducting phase induced by dimer ordering of the local moments coexisting with Kondo hybridization. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for suitable choices of parameters, a partial Kondo-screening phase, where some of the valence bonds are broken, precedes the a…
The doped two-dimensional quantum dimer model is investigated by numerical techniques on the square and triangular lattices, with significantly different results. On the square lattice, at small enough doping, there is always a phase separation between an insulating valence-bond solid and a uniform superfluid phase, whereas on the triangular lattice, doping leads directly to a uniform superfluid in a large portion of the RVB phase. Under an applied Aharonov-Bohm flux, the superfluid exhibits quantization in terms of half-flux quanta, consistent with Q=2e elementary charge quanta in transport p…
A quantum dimer model (QDM) on the kagome lattice with an extensive ground-state entropy was recently introduced [Phys. Rev. B 67, 214413 (2003)]. The ground-state energy of this QDM in presence of one and two static holes is investigated by means of exact diagonalizations on lattices containing up to 144 kagome sites. The interaction energy between the holes (at distances up to 7 lattice spacings) is evaluated and the results show no indication of confinement at large hole separations.
The spin-orbital model for triply degenerate t_2g electrons on a triangular lattice has been shown to be dominated by dimers: the phase diagram contains both strongly resonating, compound spin-orbital dimer states and quasi-static, spin-singlet valence-bond (VB) states. To elucidate the nature of the true ground state in these different regimes, the model is mapped to a number of quantum dimer models (QDMs), each of which has three dimer colors. The generic multicolored QDM, illustrated for the two- and three-color cases, possesses a topological color structure, "color vison" excitations, and …
We study classical hard-core dimer models on three-dimensional lattices using analytical approaches and Monte Carlo simulations. On the bipartite cubic lattice, a local gauge field generalization of the height representation used on the square lattice predicts that the dimers are in a critical Coulomb phase with algebraic, dipolar, correlations, in excellent agreement with our large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. The non-bipartite FCC and Fisher lattices lack such a representation, and we find that these models have both confined and exponentially deconfined but no critical phases. We conjectu…
We consider the $(2+1)$-d $SU(2)$ quantum link model on the honeycomb lattice and show that it is equivalent to a quantum dimer model on the Kagomé lattice. The model has crystalline confined phases with spontaneously broken translation invariance associated with pinwheel order, which is investigated with either a Metropolis or an efficient cluster algorithm. External half-integer non-Abelian charges (which transform non-trivially under the $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ center of the $SU(2)$ gauge group) are confined to each other by fractionalized strings with a delocalized $\mathbb{Z}(2)$ flux. The strand…
We present a model of classical hard-core dimers on the square lattice that contains an Ising nematic phase in its phase diagram. We consider a model with an attractive interaction for parallel dimers on a given plaquette of the square lattice and an attractive interaction for neighboring parallel dimers on the same row ({\it viz} column) of the lattice. By extensive Monte carlo simulations we find that with a finite density of holes the phase diagram has, with rising temperatures, a columnar crystalline phase, an Ising nematic liquid phase and a disordered fluid phase, separated by Ising cont…
We introduce a quantum dimer model on the hexagonal lattice that, in addition to the standard three-dimer kinetic and potential terms, includes a competing potential part counting dimer-free hexagons. The zero-temperature phase diagram is studied by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, supplemented by variational arguments. It reveals some new crystalline phases and a cascade of transitions with rapidly changing flux (tilt in the height language). We analyze perturbatively the vicinity of the Rokhsar-Kivelson point, showing that this model has the microscopic ingredients needed for the "d…
In quantum magnetism spin dimers are typically associated with spin-singlet states. To date, $triplet$ $dimerization$ has not been observed in any 3D or quasi-2D material. With this in mind we here discuss the electronic structure of the spin-orbit driven $5d^5$ Mott insulator Li$_2$IrO$_3$, a honeycomb-lattice system with two crystallographically inequivalent Ir-Ir bonds. From $ab$ $initio$ many-body calculations we find that, while both Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings are present, the magnetic interactions are dominated by a strong isotropic ferromagnetic exchange on only one set of bonds. T…
We present a class of quantum dimer models on the kagome lattice with full translational invariance that feature a quantum many-body scar state of analytically known entanglement properties within their spectra. Using exact diagonalization on lattices of up to 60 sites, we show that non-scar states conform to the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Specifically, we show that energies are distributed according to the Gaussian ensemble expected of their respective symmetry sector, illustrate the existence of the scar from bipartite entanglement properties, and demonstrate revival phenomena in …
The ground state (gs) of antiferromagnetically coupled dimers on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) stabilizes many exotic phases and has been extensively studied. The gs properties of ferromagnetically coupled dimers on SSL are equally important but unexplored. In this model the exchange coupling along the $x$-axis ($J_x$) and $y$-axis ($J_y$) are ferromagnetic and the diagonal exchange coupling ($J$) is antiferromagnetic. In this work we explore the quantum phase diagram of ferromagnetically coupled dimer model numerically using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We note t…
Using exact diagonalizations and Green's function Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the zero-temperature properties of the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice on clusters with up to 588 sites. A detailed comparison of the properties in different topological sectors as a function of the cluster size and for different cluster shapes has allowed us to identify different phases, to show explicitly the presence of topological degeneracy in a phase close to the Rokhsar-Kivelson point, and to understand finite-size effects inside this phase. The nature of the various phases has been …

Aiming to describe frustrated quantum magnets with non-magnetic singlet ground states, we have extended the Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) loop-expansion to derive a generalized Quantum Dimer Model containing only connected terms up to arbitrary order. For the square lattice frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet (J1-J2-J3 model), an expansion up to 8th order shows that the leading correction to the original RK model comes from dimer moves on length-6 loops. This model free of the original sign problem is treated by advanced numerical techniques. The results suggest that a rotationally anisotropic plaqu…
Motivated by the experiments on the organic compound $(Per)_{2}[Pt(mnt)_{2}]$, we study the ground state of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model at quarter filling with the density matrix renormalization group method. We show a coupled dimer and bond-order-wave (BOW) state in the weak coupling regime for the localized spins and itinerant electrons, respectively. The quantum phase transitions for the dimer and the BOW orders occur at the same critical coupling parameter $J_{c}$, with the opening of a charge gap. The emergence of the combination of dimer and BOW order agrees with the experime…
After reviewing the concept of vison excitations in Z_2 dimer liquids, we study the liquid-crystal transition of the Quantum Dimer Model on the triangular lattice by means of a semiclassical spin-wave approximation to the dispersion of visons in the context of a "soft-dimer" version of the model. This approach captures some important qualitative features of the transition: continuous nature of the transition, linear dispersion at the critical point, and \sqrt{12}x\sqrt{12} symmetry-breaking pattern. In a second part, we present a variational calculation of the vison dispersion relation at the …
The S=1/2 and S=1 two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the anisotropic dimerized square lattice are investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. By finite-size-scaling analyses on the correlation lengths, the ground-state phase diagram parametrized by strengths of the dimerization and of the spatial anisotropy is determined much more accurately than the previous works. It is confirmed that the quantum critical phenomena on the phase boundaries belong to the same universality class as that of the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Furthermore, for S=1, we show th…
We study a model of strongly correlated S=1/2 fermions on the planar pyrochlore, or checkerboard, lattice, at fractional (1/8) filling. Starting with the extended Hubbard model in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion, low-energy configurations can be mapped onto hard-core dimer configurations whose dimers carry a spin degree of freedom. An effective Hamiltonian similar to the kinetic term of a quantum dimer model on the square lattice which rotates two parallel dimers (in a spin-singlet configuration) by 90 degrees naturally emerges. We also introduce an additional term in the Hamiltonian, a …
We holographically engineer a periodic lattice of localized fermionic impurities within a plasma medium by putting an array of probe D5-branes in the background produced by N D3-branes. Thermodynamic quantities are computed in the large N limit via the holographic dictionary. We then dope the lattice by replacing some of the D5-branes by anti-D5-branes. In the large N limit, we determine the critical temperature below which the system dimerizes with bond ordering. Finally, we argue that for the special case of a square lattice our system is glassy at large but finite N, with the low temperatur…
