In this work, we study quantum crystal melting in three space dimensions. Using an equivalent description in terms of dimers in a hexagonal lattice, we recast the crystal melting Hamiltonian as an occupancy problem in a Kagome lattice. The Hilbert space is spanned by states labeled by plane partitions and writing them as a product of interlaced integer partitions, we define a fermion-boson duality for plane partitions. Finally, based upon the latter result we conjecture that the growth operators for the quantum Hamiltonian can be represented in terms of the affine Yangian ${\cal Y}[\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1)]$.
This paper considers aspects of a Kagome lattice system with states classified by plane partitions. Using two sets of free fermions, we rewrite the lattice in terms of two families of spin chains. In this formalism, the quantum crystals Hamiltonian becomes more transparent, and we determine expressions for the first 3 levels of plane partition states. A classical statistical model associated with local configurations in the Kagome lattice is also defined, and we show that a reduction of this classical system gives two Yang-Baxter integrable subsystems analogous to a descendant of the 6-vertex …
It is known that a 4d N = 1 SCFT lives on D3-branes probing a local del Pezzo Calabi-Yau singularity. The Seiberg (or toric) duality of this SCFT arises from the Picard-Lefshetz transformation of the affine E_N 7-brane background that is associated with the Calabi-Yau threefold. In this paper we study the duality of the affine E_N background itself and a 5-brane probing it. We then find that many different Type IIB 5-brane webs describe the same SCFT in 5d. We check this duality by comparing the Nekrasov partition functions of these 5-brane web configurations.
We discuss partition functions of N=(4,4) type IIA string theory on the pp-wave background. This theory is shown to be modular invariant. The boundary states are constructed and possible D-brane instantons are classified. Then we calculate cylinder amplitudes in both closed and open string descriptions and check the open/closed string duality. Furthermore we consider general properties of modular invariant partition functions in the case of pp-waves.
We study the partition function of type IIA string theory on 10-manifolds of the form T^2 x X where X is 8-dimensional, compact, and spin. We pay particular attention to the effects of the topological phases in the supergravity action implied by the K-theoretic formulation of RR fields, and we use these to check the T-duality invariance of the partition function. We find that the partition function is only T-duality invariant when we take into account the T-duality anomalies in the RR sector, the fermionic path integral (including 4-fermi interaction terms), and 1-loop corrections including wo…
We consider the $N\!=\!1$ supersymmetric $σ$-model and we examine the transformation properties of the partition function under target-space duality. Contrary to what one would expect, we find that it is not, in general, invariant. In fact, besides the dilaton shift emerging from the Jacobian of the duality transformation of the bosonic part, there also exist a Jacobian for the fermionic part since fermions are also transform under the duality process. The latter is just the parity of the spin structure of the word sheet and since it cannot be compensated, the dual theory is not equvalent to t…
We compute the partition functions of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ using supersymmetric localization. The path integral reduces to a sum over vortices at the poles of $S^2$ and at the origin of $\mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$. The exact partition functions allow us to test Seiberg duality beyond the supersymmetric index. We propose the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ partition functions on the $Ω$-background, and show that the Nekrasov partition functions can be recovered from these building blocks.
We analyse supermembrane instantons (fully wrapped supermembranes) by computing the partition function of the three-dimensional supersymmetrical U(N) matrix model under periodic boundary conditions. By mapping the model to a cohomological field theory and considering a mass-deformation of the model, we show that the partition function exactly leads to the U-duality invariant measure factor entering supermembrane instanton sums. On the other hand, a computation based on the quasi-classical assumption gives the non U-duality invariant result of the zero-mode analysis by Pioline et al. This is su…
The evidence for string/string-duality can be extended from the matching of the vector couplings to gravitational couplings. In this note this is shown in the rank three example, the closest stringy analog of the Seiberg/Witten-setup, which is related to the Calabi-Yau $WP^4_{1,1,2,2,6}(12)$. I provide an exact analytical verification of a relation checked by coefficient comparison to fourth order by Kaplunovsky, Louis and Theisen.
We compute the partition function of four-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a general four-torus T4 with flat metric using Dirac quantization. In addition to an SL(4, Z) symmetry, it possesses SL(2,Z) symmetry that is electromagnetic S-duality. We show explicitly how this SL(2, Z) S-duality of the 4d abelian gauge theory has its origin in symmetries of the 6d (2,0) tensor theory, by computing the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on T2 x T4, which has SL(2,Z) x SL(4,Z) symmetry. If we identify the couplings of the abelian gauge theory τ= {θ\over 2π} + i{4π\over e^2} with …
Supersymmetric black holes provide an excellent theoretical laboratory to test ideas about quantum gravity in general and black hole entropy in particular. When four-dimensional supergravity is interpreted as the low-energy approximation of ten-dimensional string theory or eleven-dimensional M-theory, one has a microscopic description of the black hole which allows one to count microstates and to compare the result to the macroscopic (geometrical) entropy. Recently it has been conjectured that there is a very direct connection between the partition function of the topological string and a part…
Two different families of abelian chiral gauge theories on the torus are investigated: the aim is to test the consistency of two-dimensional anomalous gauge theories in the presence of global degrees of freedom for the gauge field. An explicit computation of the partition functions shows that unitarity is recovered in particular regions of parameter space and that the effective dynamics is described in terms of fermionic interacting models. For the first family, this connection with fermionic models uncovers an exact duality which is conjectured to hold in the nonabelian case as well.
We show that both perturbative and non-perturbative parts of universal partition functions of Chern-Simons theory on 3d sphere are ratios of four over four Barnes' quadruple gamma functions with arguments given by linear combinations of universal parameters. Since nonperturbative part of partition function is essentially a universal compact simple Lie group's volume, latter appears to be expressed through quadruple Barnes' functions, also. For SU(N) values of parameters recurrent relations on Barnes' functions give the proof of level-rank duality of complete partition function, thus extending …
We study various duality webs involving the 3d FT[SU(N)] theory, a close relative of the T[SU(N)] quiver tail. We first map the partition functions of FT[SU(N)] and its 3d spectral dual to a pair of spectral dual q-Toda conformal blocks. Then we show how to obtain the FT[SU(N)] partition function by Higgsing a 5d linear quiver gauge theory, or equivalently from the refined topological string partition function on a certain toric Calabi-Yau three-fold. 3d spectral duality in this context descends from 5d spectral duality. Finally we discuss the 2d reduction of the 3d spectral dual pair and stud…
We show that the solitonic contribution of compactified strings corresponds to the quantum statistical partition function of a free particle living on higher dimensional spaces. In the simplest case of a compactification in a circle, the Hamiltonian corresponds to the Laplacian on the 2g-dimensional Jacobian torus associated to the genus g Riemann surface corresponding to the string worldsheet. T-duality leads to a symmetry of the partition function mixing time and temperature. Such a classical/quantum correspondence and T-duality shed some light on the well-known interplay between time and te…
We examine the electric-magnetic duality for a U(1) gauge theory on a general 4-manifold. The partition function for such a theory transforms as a modular form of specific weight. However, in the canonical approach, we show that S-duality, like T-duality, is generated by a canonical transformation leading to a modular invariant partition function.
The macroscopic entropy and the attractor equations for BPS black holes in four-dimensional N=2 supergravity theories follow from a variational principle for a certain `entropy function'. We present this function in the presence of R^2-interactions and non-holomorphic corrections. The variational principle identifies the entropy as a Legendre transform and this motivates the definition of various partition functions corresponding to different ensembles and a hierarchy of corresponding duality invariant inverse Laplace integral representations for the microscopic degeneracies. Whenever the micr…
We compute the partition function of five-dimension Abelian sYM including a graviphoton term on a five-torus. The result agrees with Abelian M5 brane partition function with zero characteristics on an associated six-torus.
We attempt to determine the partition function of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory for $ADE$ gauge groups on $K3$ and investigate the relation with affine Lie algebras. In particular we describe eta functions, which compose SU(N) partition function, by level $N$ $A_{N-1}$ theta functions. Moreover we find $D,E$ theta functions, which satisfy the Montonen-Olive duality for $D,E$ partition functions.
We solve, for finite $N$, the matrix model of supersymmetric $U(N)$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to $N_{f}$ massive hypermultiplets of $R$-charge $\frac{1}{2}$, together with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term. We compute the partition function by identifying it with a determinant of a Hankel matrix, whose entries are parametric derivatives (of order $N_{f}-1$) of Mordell integrals. We obtain finite Gauss sums expressions for the partition functions. We also apply these results to obtain an exhaustive test of Giveon-Kutasov (GK) duality in the $\mathcal{N}=3$ setting, by systematic computation of the matr…
We determine the partition functions of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills gauge theory for some $ADE$ gauge groups on $K3$, under the assumption that they are holomorphic. Our partition functions satisfy the gap condition and Montonen-Olive duality at the same time, like the SU(N) partition functions of Vafa and Witten. As a result we find a close relation between Hecke operator and $S$-duality of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills for $ADE$ gauge group on $K3$.
In this note, we explore the relation between crossing symmetry and modular invariance in conformal field theory and S-duality in gauge theory. It is shown that partition functions of different S dual theories of N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with four fundamentals can be derived from the crossing symmetry of the Liouville four point function. We also show that the partition function of N=4 SU(2) gauge theory can be derived from the Liouville partition function on torus.
We study the torus partition functions of free bosonic CFTs in two dimensions. Integrating over Narain moduli defines an ensemble-averaged free CFT. We calculate the averaged partition function and show that it can be reinterpreted as a sum over topologies in three dimensions. This result leads us to conjecture that an averaged free CFT in two dimensions is holographically dual to an exotic theory of three-dimensional gravity with $U(1)^c \times U(1)^c$ symmetry and a composite boundary graviton. Additionally, for small central charge $c$, we obtain general constraints on the spectral gap of f…
't Hooft construction of free energy, electric and magnetic fluxes, and of the partition function with twisted boundary conditions, is extended to the case of $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories based on arbitrary compact, simple Lie groups. The transformation of the fluxes and the free energy under S-duality is presented. We consider the partition function of $N=4$ for a particular choice of boundary conditions, and compute exactly its leading infrared divergence. We verify that this partition function obeys the transformation laws required by S-duality. This provides independent evidenc…
We show that $U(N)$ $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories on $S^{3}$ with $N_{f}$ massive fundamental hypermultiplets and with a Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term are solvable in terms of generalized Selberg integrals. Finite $N$ expressions for the partition function and Wilson loop in arbitrary representations are given. We obtain explicit analytical expressions for Wilson loops with symmetric, antisymmetric, rectangular and hook representations, in terms of Gamma functions of complex argument. The free energy for orthogonal and symplectic gauge group is also given. The asymptotic expa…
Definition of the partition function of U(1) gauge theory is extended to a class of four-manifolds containing all compact spaces and certain asymptotically locally flat (ALF) ones including the multi-Taub--NUT spaces. The partition function is calculated via zeta-function regularization with special attention to its modular properties. In the compact case, compared with the purely topological result of Witten, we find a non-trivial curvature correction to the modular weights of the partition function. But S-duality can be restored by adding gravitational counter terms to the Lagrangian in the …
In this paper we study the relation between pyramid partitions with a general empty room configuration (ERC) and the BPS states of D-branes on the resolved conifold. We find that the generating function for pyramid partitions with a length n ERC is exactly the same as the D6/D2/D0 BPS partition function on the resolved conifold in particular Kaehler chambers. We define a new type of pyramid partition with a finite ERC that counts the BPS degeneracies in certain other chambers. The D6/D2/D0 partition functions in different chambers were obtained by applying the wall crossing formula. On the oth…
We show that the partition function of free Maxwell theory on a generic Euclidean four-manifold transforms in a non-trivial way under electric-magnetic duality. The classical part of the partition sum can be mapped onto the genus-one partition function of a 2d toroidal model, without the oscillator contributions. This map relates electric-magnetic duality to modular invariance of the toroidal model and, conversely, the $O(d,d',\Z)$ duality to the invariance of Maxwell theory under the 4d mapping class group. These dualities and the relation between toroidal models and Maxwell theory can be und…
We investigate the electromagnetic duality properties of an abelian gauge theory on a compact oriented four-manifold by analysing the behaviour of a generalised partition function under modular transformations of the dimensionless coupling constants. The true partition function is invariant under the full modular group but the generalised partition function exhibits more complicated behaviour depending on topological properties of the four-manifold concerned. It is already known that there may be "modular weights" which are linear combinations of the Euler number and Hirzebruch signature of th…
We use localization techniques to study several duality proposals for supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions reminiscent of Seiberg duality. We compare the partition functions of dual theories deformed by real mass terms and FI parameters. We find that Seiberg-like duality for N=3 Chern-Simons gauge theories proposed by Giveon and Kutasov holds on the level of partition functions and is closely related to level-rank duality in pure Chern-Simons theory. We also clarify the relationship between the Giveon-Kutasov duality and a duality in theories of fractional M2 branes and propose a …
In a previous article, a construction of the smooth Deligne-Beilinson cohomology groups $H^p_D(M)$ on a closed $3$-manifold $M$ represented by a Heegaard splitting $X_L \cup_f X_R$ was presented. Then, a determination of the partition functions of the $U(1)$ Chern-Simons and BF Quantum Field theories was deduced from this construction. In this second and concluding article we stay in the context of a Heegaard spitting of $M$ to define Deligne-Beilinson $1$-currents whose equivalent classes form the elements of $H^1_D(M)^\star$, the Pontryagin dual of $H^1_D(M)$. Finally, we use singular fields…
We show a duality of branes in the topological B-model by inserting two kinds of the non-compact branes simultaneously. We explicitly derive the integral formula for the matrix model partition function describing this situation, which correspondingly includes both of the characteristic polynomial and the external source. We show that these two descriptions are dual to each other through the Fourier transformation, and the brane partition function satisfies integrable equations in one and two dimensions.
Dualities provide deep insight into physics by relating two seemingly distinct theories. Here we consider a duality between lattice fermions and bosons in (2+1) spacetime dimensions, relating free massive Dirac fermions to Abelian Chern-Simons Higgs (ACSH) bosons. To establish the duality we represent the exact partition function of the lattice fermions in terms of the writhe of fermionic worldlines. On the bosonic side the partition function is expressed in the writhe of the vortex loops of the particle-vortex dual of the ACSH Lagrangian. In the continuum and scaling limit we show these to be…
The partition function of type IIA and B strings on R^6xK3, in the T^4/Z_2 orbifold limit, is explicitly computed as a modular invariant sum over spin strutures required by perturbative unitarity in order to extend the analysis to include type II strings on R^6 x W4, where W4 is associated with the tube metric conformal field theory, given by the degrees of freedom transverse to the Neveu-Schwarz fivebrane solution. This generates partition functions and perturbative spectra of string theories in six space-time dimensions, associated with the modular invariants of the level k affine SU(2) Kac-…
We consider a twisted version of the four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge groups SU(2) and SO(3), and bare masses for two of its chiral multiplets, thereby breaking N=4 down to N=2. Using the wall-crossing technique introduced by Moore and Witten within the u-plane approach to twisted topological field theories, we compute the partition function and all the topological correlation functions for the case of simply-connected spin four-manifolds of simple type. By including 't Hooft fluxes, we analyse the properties of the resulting formulae under duality transformatio…
Duality relations for the 2D nonhomogeneous Ising model on the finite square lattice wrapped on the torus are obtained. The partition function of the model on the dual lattice with arbitrary combinations of the periodical and antiperiodical boundary conditions along the cycles of the torus is expressed through some specific combination of the partition functions of the model on the original lattice with corresponding boundary conditions. It is shown that the structure of the duality relations is connected with the topological peculiarities of the dual transformation of the model on the torus.
We consider the quantum partition function for a system of quantum spinors and then derive an equivalent (or dual) classical partition function for some scalar degrees of freedom. The coupling between scalars is non-trivial (e.g. a model on 2-sphere configuration space), but the locality structure of the dual system is preserved, in contrast to the imaginary time formalism. We also show that the measure of integration in the classical partition function can be formally expressed through relativistic Green's functions which suggests a possible mechanism for the emergence of a classical space-ti…
We show that the 5D Nekrasov partition functions enjoy the enhanced global symmetry of the UV fixed point. The fiber-base duality is responsible for the global symmetry enhancement. For $SU(2)$ with $N_f\leq 7$ flavors the fiber-base symmetry together with the manifest flavor $SO(2N_f)$ symmetry generate the $E_{N_f+1}$ global symmetry, while in the higher rank case the manifest global symmetry of the two dual theories related by the fiber-base duality map generate the symmetry enhancement. The symmetry enhancement at the level of the partition function is manifest once we chose an appropriate…
We study the instanton partition functions of 5d maximal super Yang-Mills theories with all classical gauge groups. They are computed from the ADHM quantum mechanics of the D0-D4-O4 systems. Our partition functions respect S-dualities of the circle compactified Yang-Mills theories and various orientifold backgrounds. We also compute and study the $S^5$ partition functions that correspond to the 6d (2,0) superconformal indices. Our SO(2N) index takes the form of the vacuum character of $\mathcal{W}_D$ algebra in a special limit, supporting the $\mathcal{W}$ algebra conjecture. We propose new in…
We find new exact relations between the partition function and vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in ABJ theory, which allow us to predict the large N expansions of the 1/2 BPS Wilson loops from known results of the partition function. These relations are interpreted as an open-closed duality where the closed string background is shifted by the insertion of Wilson loops due to a back-reaction. Using the connection between ABJ theory and the topological string on local P1 x P1, we explicitly write down non-trivial relations between open and closed string amplitudes.
A parent action is introduced to formulate (S-) dual of non-anticommutative N=1\2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory. Partition function for parent action in phase space is utilized to establish the equivalence of partition functions of the theories which this parent action produces. Thus, duality invariance of non-anticommutative N=1\2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory follows. The results which we obtained are valid at tree level or equivalently at the first order in the nonanticommutativity parameter C_{μν}.
Inspired by Yoneya's recent work on D-brane field theory, we present the constructive definition of this theory as a new dual model based on the quantization of non-perturbative string gauged S-dualities and its spontaneous breakdown. Our model is determined by one BRST quantization condition. Here, we provide some testable conjectures, for example, that the partition function of bosonic part of IIB matrix model and string partition functions of various interactions including gravity are realized by the physical state and its Goldstone modes.
We study a method to compute a topological phase factor of partition function for pure Chern-Simons theory incorporating the supersymmetric localization. We develop a regularization preserving supersymmetry and the topological phase appears as a result of the supersymmetric regularization. Applying this method to pure Chern-Simons theory on lens space we compute the background dependent phase factor coming from the Chern-Simons term. We confirm that the partition function computed in this method enjoys a couple of level rank dualities including the one recently proposed in arXiv:1607.07457 for…
We obtain the brane setup describing 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $USp(2N_c)$ and $U(N_c)$ SQCD with monopole superpotentials. This classification follows from a complete analysis of affine and twisted affine compactifications from 4d. The analysis leads to a new duality for the unitary case that has been previously overlooked in the literature. We check this by matching of the three sphere partition function of the two sides of this new duality and find a perfect agreement. Furthermore we use the partition function to predict new 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for SQCD with monopole superpo…
We explore 1d vortex dynamics of 3d supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, as inferred from factorization of exact partition functions. Under Seiberg-like dualities, the 3d partition function must remain invariant, yet it is not a priori clear what should happen to the vortex dynamics. We observe that the 1d quivers for the vortices remain the same, and the net effect of the 3d duality map manifests as 1d Wall-Crossing phenomenon; Although the vortex number can shift along such duality maps, the ranks of the 1d quiver theory are unaffected, leading to a notion of fundamental vortices as basic bui…
We use localization to compute the partition function of a four dimensional, supersymmetric, abelian gauge theory on a hemisphere coupled to charged matter on the boundary. Our theory has eight real supercharges in the bulk of which four are broken by the presence of the boundary. The main result is that the partition function is identical to that of ${\mathcal N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons theory on a three-sphere coupled to chiral multiplets, but where the quantized Chern-Simons level is replaced by an arbitrary complexified gauge coupling $τ$. The localization reduces the path integral to a si…
It is shown that the partition function of the 2d Ising model on the dual finite lattice with periodical boundary conditions is expressed through some specific combination of the partition functions of the model on the torus with corresponding boundary conditions. The generalization of the duality relations for the nonhomogeneous case is given. These relations are proved for the weakly-nonhomogeneous distribution of the coupling constants for the finite lattice of arbitrary sizes. Using the duality relations for the nonhomogeneous Ising model, we obtain the duality relations for the two-point …
T-duality is one of the essential elements of string theory. Recently, Hull has developed a formalism where the dimension of the target space is doubled so as to make T-duality manifest. This is then supplemented with a constraint equation that allows the connection to the usual string sigma model. This paper analyses the partition function of the doubled formalism by interpreting the constraint equation as that of a chiral scalar and then using holomorphic factorisation techniques to determine the partition function. We find there is quantum equivalence to the ordinary string once the topolog…
We consider type IIB $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ symmetry to relate the partition functions of different 5d supersymmetric Abelian linear quiver Yang-Mills theories in the $Ω$-background and squashed $S^5$ background. By Higgsing S-dual theories, we extract new and old 3d mirror pairs. Generically, the Higgsing procedure yields 3d defects on intersecting spaces, and we derive new hyperbolic integral identities expressing the equivalence of the squashed $S^3$ partition functions with additional degrees of freedom on the $S^1$ intersection.
Equivalence of partition functions for U(1) gauge theory and its dual in appropriate phase spaces is established in terms of constrained hamiltonian formalism of their parent action. Relations between the electric--magnetic duality transformation and the (S) duality transformation which inverts the strong coupling domains to the weak coupling domains of noncommutative U(1) gauge theory are discussed in terms of the lagrangian and the hamiltonian densities. The approach presented for the commutative case is utilized to demonstrate that noncommutative U(1) gauge theory and its dual possess the s…
We find examples of duality among quantum theories that are related to arithmetic functions by identifying distinct Hamiltonians that have identical partition functions at suitably related coupling constants or temperatures. We are led to this after first developing the notion of partial supersymmetry-in which some, but not all, of the operators of a theory have superpartners-and using it to construct fermionic and parafermionic thermal partition functions, and to derive some number theoretic identities. In the process, we also find a bosonic analogue of the Witten index, and use this, too, to…
Vafa-Witten theory is a twisted N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory whose partition functions are the generating functions of the Euler number of instanton moduli spaces. In this paper, we recall quantum gauge theory with discrete electric and magnetic fluxes and review the main results of Vafa-Witten theory when the gauge group is simply laced. Based on the transformations of theta functions and their appearance in the blow-up formulae, we propose explicit transformations of the partition functions under the Hecke group when the gauge group is non-simply laced. We provide various evidences and co…
We propose an equivalence of the partition functions of two different 3d gauge theories. On one side of the correspondence we consider the partition function of 3d SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory on a 3-manifold, obtained as a punctured Riemann surface times an interval. On the other side we have a partition function of a 3d N=2 superconformal field theory on S^3, which is realized as a duality domain wall in a 4d gauge theory on S^4. We sketch the proof of this conjecture using connections with quantum Liouville theory and quantum Teichmuller theory, and study in detail the example of the once-pu…
We consider an example of vectorial AdS_5/CFT_4 duality when the boundary theory is described by N free complex or real Maxwell fields. It is dual to a particular ("type C") higher spin theory in AdS_5 containing fields in special mixed-symmetry representations. We extend the study of this theory in arXiv:1410.3273 by deriving the expression for the large N limit of the corresponding singlet-sector partition function on S^1 x S^3. We find that in both complex U(N) and real O(N) invariant cases the form of the one-particle partition function is as required by the AdS/CFT duality. We also demons…
We derive Virasoro constraints for the zero momentum part of the QCD-like partition functions in the sector of topological charge $ν$. The constraints depend on the topological charge only through the combination $N_f +βν/2$ where the value of the Dyson index $β$ is determined by the reality type of the fermions. This duality between flavor and topology is inherited by the small-mass expansion of the partition function and {\em all} spectral sum-rules of inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. For the special case $β=2$ but arbitrary topological charge the Virasoro constraints…
We investigate the analogue of S-duality for 2-d gravity. Our analysis is based in a partition function associated to the Katanaev-Volovich type action for 2-d gravity. We find a S-dual 2-d gravitational action which is related to the original 2-d gravitational action by strong-weak duality transformation.
Two-dimensional $σ$-models corresponding to coset CFTs of the type $ (\hat{\mathfrak{g}}_k\oplus \hat{\mathfrak{h}}_\ell )/ \hat{\mathfrak{h}}_{k+\ell}$ admit a zoom-in limit involving sending one of the levels, say $\ell$, to infinity. The result is the non-Abelian T-dual of the WZW model for the algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}_k$ with respect to the vector action of the subalgebra $\mathfrak{h}$ of $ \mathfrak{g}$. We examine modular invariant partition functions in this context. Focusing on the case with $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{h}=\mathfrak{su}(2)$ we apply the above limit to the branching func…
By studying the partition function of $N=4$ topologically twisted supersymmetric Yang-Mills on four-manifolds, we make an exact strong coupling test of the Montonen-Olive strong-weak duality conjecture. Unexpected and exciting links are found with two-dimensional rational conformal field theory.
We transform, by means of a fiberwise duality, the partition function of QCD on a product of two two-tori, into a four-dimensional sigma-model, whose target space is the cotangent space of unitary connections on the fiber torus fiberwise.
