We study a model of hard-core bosons with frustrated nearest-neighbor hopping ($t$) and repulsion ($V$) on the triangular lattice. We argue for a supersolid ground state in the large repulsion ($V\gg|t|$) limit where a dimer representation applies, by constructing a unitary mapping to the well understood unfrustrated hopping case. This generalized 'Marshall sign rule' allows us to establish the precise nature of the supersolid order by utilizing a recently proposed dimer variational wavefunction, whose correlations can be efficiently calculated using the Grassman approach. By continuity, a supersolid is predicted over the wide parameter range, $V>-2t>0$. This also establishes a simple phase diagram for the triangular lattice spin 1/2 XXZ antiferromagnet.
We study hard-core bosons with unfrustrated hopping ($t$) and nearest neighbour repulsion ($U$) on the triangular lattice. At half-filling, the system undergoes a zero temperature ($T$) quantum phase transition from a superfluid phase at small $U$ to a supersolid at $U_c \approx 4.45$ in units of $2t$. This supersolid phase breaks the lattice translation symmetry in a characteristic $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ pattern, and is remarkably stable--indeed, a smooth extrapolation of our results indicates that the supersolid phase persists for arbitrarily large $U/t$.
We present a variational wavefunction which explains the behaviour of the supersolid state formed by hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice. The wavefunction is a linear superposition of {\em only and all} configurations minimising the repulsion between the bosons (which it thus implements as a hard constraint). Its properties can be evaluated exactly--in particular, the variational minimisation of the energy yields (i) the surprising and initially controversial spontaneous density deviation from half-filling (ii) a quantitatively accurate estimate of the corresponding density wave (solid)…
We study the extended Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model on triangular cavity lattices and zigzag ladders. By using density-matrix renormalization group methods, we observe various types of solids with different density patterns and find evidence for light supersolids, which exist in extended regions of the phase diagram of the zigzag ladder. Furthermore, we observe strong pair correlations in the supersolid phase due to the interplay between the atoms in the cavities and atom-photon interaction. By means of cluster mean-field simulations and a scaling of the cluster size extending our analysis to …
Prototypical models and their material incarnations are cornerstones to the understanding of quantum magnetism. Here we show theoretically that the recently synthesized magnetic compound Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ (NBCP) is a rare, nearly ideal material realization of the $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with significant easy-axis spin exchange anisotropy. By combining the automatic parameter searching and tensor-network simulations, we establish a microscopic model description of this material with realistic model parameters, which can not only fit well the experimental thermodynamic da…
We study the effect of impurities in a supersolid phase in comparison to the behavior in the solid and superfluid phases. A supersolid phase has been established for interacting hardcore bosons on a triangular lattice which may be realizable by ultracold atomic gases. Static vacancies are considered in this model which always lower the magnitude of the order parameter in the solid or superfluid phases. In the supersolid phase, however, the impurities directly affect both order parameters simultaneously and thereby reveal an interesting interplay between them. In particular the solid order may …
We study a system of heteronuclear molecules on a triangular lattice and analyze the potential of this system for the experimental realization of a supersolid phase. The ground state phase diagram contains superfluid, solid and supersolid phases. At finite temperatures and strong interactions there is an additional emulsion region, in contrast to similar models with short-range interactions. We derive the maximal critical temperature $T_c$ and the corresponding entropy $S/N = 0.04(1)$ for supersolidity and find feasible experimental conditions for its realization.
We establish the nature of the supersolid phase observed for hardcore bosons on the triangular lattice near half-integer filling factor, and study the phase diagram of the system at finite temperature. We find that the solid order is always of the (2m,-m',-m') with m changing discontinuously from positive to negative values at half-filling, contrary to predictions of other phases, based on an analogy with the properties of Ising spins in transverse magnetic field. At finite temperature we find two intersecting second-order transition lines, one in the 3-state Potts universality class and the o…
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
We systematically study an extended Bose-Hubbard model with atom hopping and atom-pair hopping in the presence of a three-body constraint on the triangular lattice. By means of large-scale Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, the ground-state phase diagram are studied. We find a continuous transition between the atomic superfluid phase and the pair superfluid when the ratio of the atomic hopping and the atom-pair hopping is adapted. We then focus on the interplay among the atom-pair hopping, the on-site repulsion and the nearest-neighbor repulsion. With on-site repulsion present, we observe first …
We study hardcore bosons on a triangular ladder at half filling in the presence of a frustrating hopping term and a competing nearest neighbor repulsion $V$ which promotes crystallization. Using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method, we obtain the phase diagram which contains three phases: a uniform superfluid (SF), an insulating charge density wave (CDW) crystal and a bond ordered insulator (BO). We find that the transitions from SF to CDW and SF to BO are continuous in nature, with critical exponents varying continously along the phase boundaries, while the transition f…
It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
The technique of damage spreading is used to study the phase diagram of the easy axis anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on two geometrically frustrated lattices. The triangular and kagome systems are built up from triangular units that either share edges or corners respectively. The triangular lattice undergoes two sequential Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions while the kagome lattice undergoes a glassy transition. In both cases, the phase boundaries obtained using damage spreading are in good agreement with those obtained from equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations.
Herein, we study the extended Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model mainly by the large-scale worm quantum Monte-Carlo method to check whether or not a light supersolid phase exists in various geometries, such as the one-dimensional chain, square lattices and triangular lattices. To achieve our purpose, the ground state phase diagrams are investigated. For the one-dimensional chain and square lattices, a first-order transition occurs between the superfluid phase and the solid phase and therefore there is no stable supersolid phase existing in these geometries. Interestingly, soliton/beats of the local…
We study Ising antiferromagnets that have nearest-neighbour interactions on multilayer triangular lattices with frustrated ($abc$ and $abab$) stacking, and make comparisons with the unfrustrated ($aaa$) stacking. If interlayer couplings are much weaker than in-plane ones, the paramagnetic phase of models with frustrated stackings has a classical spin-liquid regime at low temperature, in which correlations are strong both within and between planes, but there is no long-range order. We investigate this regime using Monte Carlo simulations and by mapping the spin models to coupled height models, …
Motivated by the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in non-cubic lattices, in this work we study the phases and collective excitation of bosons with nearest neighbor interaction in a triangular lattice at finite temperature, using mean field (MF) and cluster mean field (CMF) theory. We compute the finite temperature phase diagram both for hardcore and softcore bosons, as well analyze the effect of correlation arising due to lattice frustration and interaction systematically using CMF method. A semi-analytic estimate of the transition temperatures between different phases are derive…
Using worm-type quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate bosonic mixtures on the triangular lattice of two species of bosons, which interact via nearest-neighbour intraspecies ($V$) and onsite interspecies ($U$) repulsions. For the case of symmetric hopping amplitude ($t_A/V=t_B/V$) and $U/V=1$, we determine a rich ground-state phase diagram that contains double solid, double superfluid (2SF), supersolid (SS), solid-superfluid (Solid-SF) and counterflow supersolid (CSS) states. The SS, Solid-SF and CSS states exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking among the three sublattices of the trian…
``Chirality'' is a multispin quantity representing the sense or the handedness of the noncollinear spin structures induced by spin frustration. Recent studies have revealed that the chirality often plays an important role in the ordering of certain frustrated magnets. Here I take up two such examples, stacked-triangular antiferromagnets and spin glasses, where the inherent chiral degree of freedom affects underlying physics and might lead to novel ordering phenomena. The first topic is the criticality of the magnetic phase transition of vector (i.e., XY or Heisenberg) antiferromagnets on the t…
Some strongly frustrated magnets such as the "spin-ice" compounds fail to produce any magnetic order at finite temperatures even in the presence of magnetic field. Still they have very unusual low-temperature thermodynamic properties related to the field-induced ground state transitions. Here we show that general qualitative picture of such peculiar thermodynamics can be obtained in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on the triangular Husimi lattice. The analytical results for this model show magnetic plateaus, entropy spikes, crossing points and peculiarities in magnetic susceptibility and spe…
The formation of coplanar spin spirals is a common motif in the magnetic ordering of many frustrated magnets. For classical antiferromagnets, geometric frustration can lead to a massively degenerate ground state manifold of spirals whose propagation vectors can be described, depending on the lattice geometry, by points (triangular), lines (fcc), surfaces (frustrated diamond) or completely flat bands (pyrochlore). Here we demonstrate an exact mathematical correspondence of these spiral manifolds of classical antiferromagnets with the Fermi surfaces of free-fermion band structures. We provide an…
Spin liquids occuring in 2D frustrated spin systems were initially assumed to appear at strongest frustration, but evidence grows that they more likely intervene at transitions between two different types of order. To identify if this is more general, we here analyze a generalization of the spatially anisotropic triangular lattice (SATL) with antiferromagnetic XY interactions, the spatially \emph{completely} anisotropic triangular lattice (SCATL). This model can be implemented in experiments with trapped ions, ultra-small Josephson junctions, or ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using Takah…
We study the anti-ferromagnetic six-state clock model with nearest neighbor interactions on a triangular lattice with extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We find clear indications of two phase transitions at two different temperatures: Below $T_I$ a chirality order sets in and by a thorough finite size scaling analysis of the specific heat and the chirality correlation length we show that this transition is in the Ising universality class (with a non-vanishing chirality order parameter below $T_I$). At $T_{KT}(<T_I)$ the spin-spin correlation length as well as the spin susceptibility diverges a…
We study critical and magnetic properties of a bilayer Ising system consisting of two triangular planes A and B, with the antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling $J_{\rm A}$ and the ferromagnetic (FM) one $J_{\rm B}$ for the respective layers, which are coupled by the interlayer interaction $J_{\rm AB}$ by using Monte Carlo simulations. When $J_{\rm A}$ and $J_{\rm B}$ are of the same order, the unfrustrated FM plane orders first at a high temperature $T_{c1} \sim J_{\rm B}$. The spontaneous FM order then exerts influence on the other frustrated AF plane as an effective magnetic field, which subsequen…
This study present a Monte Carlo investigations of low-temperature magnetic ordering and phase transitions in three-state Potts model on triangular lattice with various exchange interactions between nearest (J1) and next-nearest (J2) neighbors. The density of states for varying J1 and J2 are calculated. The magnetic structure of the ground state for various J1 and J2 are obtained. The critical temperature are calculated and the order of the phase transition determined. The density of states difference (DOSD) and histogram analysis method are used to investigate the order of the phase transitio…
We study the critical behavior of a frustrated Blume-Capel (BC) antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. For a reduced single-ion anisotropy strength $-1.47 \lesssim d < 0$ we find two phase transitions. The low-temperature phase is characterized by the antiferromagnetic long-range ordering (LRO) on two sublattices with the third one remaining in a non-magnetic state. At higher temperatures there is a critical region of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type with a power-law decaying spin-correlation function. For $-1.5 \le d \lesssim -1.47$, there is only on…
Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising ferrimagnets on a triangular lattice with sublattices A, B and C are studied for two spin value distributions $(S_{\rm A},S_{\rm B},S_{\rm C})=(1/2,1/2,1)$ and $(1/2,1,1)$ by Monte Carlo simulations. The non-bipartite character of the lattice induces geometrical frustration in both systems, which leads to the critical behavior rather different from their ferromagnetic counterparts. We confirm second-order phase transitions belonging to the standard Ising universality class occurring at higher temperatures, however, in both models these change at tricritical poin…
The study of frustrated spin systems often requires time-consuming numerical simulations. As the simplest approach, the classical Ising model is often used to investigate the thermodynamic behavior of such systems. Exploiting the small correlation lengths in frustrated Ising systems, we develop a method for obtaining a first approximation to the energetic properties of frustrated two-dimensional Ising systems using small networks of less than 30 spins. These small networks allow much faster numerical simulations, and more importantly, analytical calculation of the properties from the partition…
We investigate the zero temperature quantum phases of a Bose-Bose mixture on a triangular lattice using Bosonic Dynamical Mean Field Theory (BDMFT). We consider the case of total filling one where geometric frustration arises for asymmetric hopping. We map out a rich ground state phase diagram including xy-ferromagnetic, spin-density wave, superfluid, and supersolid phases. In particular, we identify a stripe spin-density wave phase for highly asymmetric hopping. On top of the spin-density wave, we find that the system generically shows weak charge (particle) density wave order.
The unbinding of kink pairs on domain walls in the fully frustrated XY model (on square or triangular lattices) is shown to induce the vanishing of phase coupling across the walls. This forces the phase transition, associated with unbinding of vortex pairs to take place at a lower temperature than the other phase transition, associated with proliferation of the Ising-type domain walls. The results are applicable for a description of superconducting junction arrays and wire networks in perpendicular magnetic field (corresponding to half-integer number of flux quanta per each lattice plaquette),…
